Message from the Chair Curry Research Support Your Investment at Work Bavaro Hall Grand Opening The Finances 2009-2010 Honor Roll Curry School Foundation Board of Directors The Deans Curry at a Glance

Dear Friends, I am pleased to present to you the 2009-2010 annual report of the Curry School of Education Foundation. As you read through this report, you will find that we had a very good year despite the economic realities we are working in. We are very pleased to be settled into our new offices in Bavaro Hall and excited about the new potential for cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty and students in our varied program areas. We are certain new innovations in education and human services will follow, as we apply the wealth of talent, expertise, and energy gathered in this building to some significant challenges facing our nation. The primary purpose of this report is to show our appreciation to you, our generous supporters, and to highlight ways we have been good stewards of your gifts this year. I am especially happy to report that early last spring, university administrators congratulated the Curry School for meeting its campaign goal of $55 million—two years ahead of schedule. This remarkable achievement is a credit to Curry’s generous supporters. We must continue raising philanthropic support for faculty, students, research, and programs, but the fact that we met— and continue to surpass—this goal significantly raises our stature both on Grounds and among public education schools nationally. Gifts from our donors established a new endowed scholarship fund this year—the Viola Reavis Robinson Scholarship—and supported a number of existing Foundation-administered funds that benefit students, such as the Richard Abidin Scholarship. As a result, we were able to award $320,000 to students this year. Other gifts provided tuition for low-income high school students who needed tutoring from the McGuffey Reading Clinic and supported research on teacher effectiveness through the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning. Planned gifts were established to ensure that our counselor training, teacher preparation, and higher education programs remain at the forefront of American education. With contributions to our unrestricted Annual Fund, we were able to help support doctoral students presenting their research at professional conferences and provide competitive compensation packages to attract new faculty recruits. We provided administrative support for student outreach programs like the Young Writers Workshop and the Summer Enrichment Program. We were also able to honor outstanding alumni who are making a significant impact in their career fields and to reward outstanding alumni teachers with funding to attend a professional conference. All three Curry departments received generous resources from the Foundation for the chairs to assign to areas of greatest opportunity and need. These are only a few of the ways your investment in the Curry School is making a difference. As you peruse this report, be sure to look for your name in the honor roll. You’ll see alongside your name an impressive array of alumni, friends, corporations, foundations, faculty, staff, students, and parents who are standing behind the Curry School helping to keep us strong. Thank you again for your partnership in our work.

message from the foundation chair Standing inside the light-filled atrium of Bavaro Hall for the first time last July, I reflected on

what we had accomplished over the past decade, and I could hardly believe it was all possible. In 1998, during a campaign to raise funding for endowed professorships, the Curry School

Foundation considered the goal of raising $250,000 to be a daunting task. Today, a dozen years later, the Foundation has raised over $37 million for a new building, not to mention achieving its $55 million Campaign goal two years ahead of schedule.

A lot of people deserve our thanks for making it possible to achieve the remarkable milestone

represented by Bavaro Hall. President John Casteen gave us enough leash to dream a dream of

an education school building that bespeaks the true consequence of the work taking place inside. Former Dean David Breneman had a vision that the school needed to be united in one location,

rather than spread out across the city. Dean Pianta’s leadership saw the project through to its glorious completion, as he continues to mature the school and expand the significance of its reach. Of course, there were countless university and Curry School administrators and staff, as well as architects and contractors and designers, who expertly handled the details on the ground.

There is Wally Bavaro, an outstanding teacher and dear friend, in whose honor the

building is named. Wally was the consummate role model of the engaged teacher, whose remarkable personal commitment to his students Dan Meyers speaks at the Bavaro Hall dedication on July 16.

and their community should serve as a guide

to the Curry School’s aspirations now and in the future.

Really, though, none of this could have

happened without you—our generous alumni,

friends, faculty, staff, students, and parents—and the financial resources you have so graciously provided. Thank you again.

The Curry School has a beautiful home

now—one I’m sure Mr. Jefferson would approve of. But this is only “the end of the beginning,”

to quote Churchill. The ball is in the Curry School’s court now. We watch expectantly for what remarkable work this outstanding educational community will accomplish next.

I hope you’ll stand ready with me to continue supporting the school and making sure

they have the resources they need to meet challenges tremendously more important than a building project.

uch of the new research being undertaken at the Curry School is being funded by private, state, and federal grants. These grants fund research into some of the most persistent educational and social issues plaguing our country today—from teacher effectiveness to student readiness, from adolescents’ risky behavior to adults’ startling obesity rates. These grants bring in support for faculty, students, and staff, but they also provide supplemental revenue to the school through what is referred to as indirect support. This year, our faculty has secured $23 million in new grant funding. Just under half of that amount will come in the form of highly competitive grants like the following from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute for Education Sciences:

c u rry schoo l of e d u c atio n fo u n d atio n

$2,687,000 Testing the “Banking Time” Intervention. Children who display aggression, defiance, and impulsiveness frequently at high levels have trouble developing positive and supportive relationships with their peers and teachers and have trouble engaging in learning tasks within the classroom. These children are also at significant risk for being expelled from their preschool or child-care programs—beginning a pattern of school failure for a subset of these children. This project aims to test the effectiveness of an intervention called Banking Time, which focuses on the teacher-child relationship as a resource for promoting children’s development. $1,470,000 Supporting 4Rs Curriculum Implementation in Urban Schools. Curry faculty are teaming with the developers of a curriculum, the “4Rs” (Reading, Writing, Respect and Resolution), to improve consistency of implementation in urban classrooms. They will develop and test a package of supports for teachers, including continuous, on-demand access to high-quality video examples of 4Rs lessons in action and individual coaching that involves video-based feedback evaluating how teachers effectively interact with their students during 4Rs.

$1,470,000 Improving the Quality of Teachers’ Interactions with Children. The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning recently showed that its 14-week course helping early childhood teachers understand and observe effective teaching practices led to improvements in their use of these practices in classrooms. However, many teachers found it hard to fit this traditional, in-person coursework into their busy professional and personal schedules. With this grant, faculty will develop an online version of the course for use by early childhood teachers around the country. $650,000 Postdoctoral Training in Education Sciences. Education science researchers study how both in-school and out-of-school settings affect the development of children and youth. They seek to discover systematic changes to these settings that can move children and youth toward more successful educational experiences. This grant initiative will prepare postdoctoral fellows for careers in education science. Three or four candidates who have recently received their Ph.D.s will be chosen each year to collaborate with Curry faculty members on their research for one to three years. $136,500 Availability of Early Childhood Care. This project will use census data to investigate how access to early childhood care varies across communities, how the recent expansion of school-based preschool has influenced the use of other types of care, and how efforts to expand and improve child care options has influenced children’s school readiness. Grants awarded from other sources this year will fund research in sports medicine and athletic training, school safety, positive youth development, young children’s mathematics skills, out-of-school science programs, engineering education for elementary students, and more.

This year Curry has recruited another four new talented scholars to its faculty: John Sirard, assistant professor in kinesiology and positive youth development. He comes from the University of Minnesota where his focus has been on schools and physical activity.

Amanda Kibler, assistant professor in English education. She recently completed a post doc from Stanford University with a focus on promoting writing skills in middle school English language learners.

Dan Player, lecturer, Partnership for Leaders in Education and education doctorate in leadership program. Dan will join us from Mathematica, where he specialized in evaluation research.

Jennie Chiu, assistant professor, science and mathematics education. She is a recent graduate of the University of California Berkeley.

The Charles S. Robb Professor of Education

Eminent Scholar Dan Hallahan

N

6

othing about his cramped office in the basement of Peabody Hall back in 1971 hinted that Curry’s new assistant professor Dan Hallahan was going to become such an eminent scholar in the field of special education. Yet in the four decades since, Hallahan, the Charles S. Robb Professor of Education, has become recognized in special education circles for developing “the underpinning and much of the impetus for instructional strategies that are considered ‘best practice’ today.” These were the words of the Council for Exceptional Children when presenting its Special Education Research Award to him in 2000. The Council noted that throughout his career Professor Hallahan has insisted on translating his research into practical classroom applications, exploring and reworking ideas until they become concrete methods for improving the lives of students with learning disabilities. As founder of the federally funded U.Va. Learning Disabilities Research Institute in the late 1970s, Professor Hallahan began to make his mark with studies examining children who struggled both with learning disabilities and attention deficit problems. He and his colleagues in the institute insisted that the interventions they developed and tested be both reliable and easy for teachers to implement without

c u rry schoo l of e d u c atio n fo u n d atio n

extensive professional development. “That research set the tone for most of my research since, both for identifying students in need of special education and for instructional practices,” he says. Over the past three decades, Professor Hallahan’s work has set standards for evidence-based practice in the field. Among several books he has co-authored is one of the most widely used introductory-level course books on the subject of exceptional learners. Exceptional Learners: Introduction to Special Education is now in its 11th edition. He was the inaugural editor of the journal Exceptionality from 1990 to 1992 and is a past president of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Learning Disabilities. Both his leadership and his classroom skill have been recognized here at the university and across the state. He received the U.Va. Outstanding Teaching Award in 1998. In 2003, he was one of ten recipients of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia’s Outstanding Faculty Award. At the Curry School, Professor Hallahan served as chair of the Department of Special Education from 1980 to 1985 and chair of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education from 1997 to 2008. This year he was appointed director of doctoral studies.

Professor Hallahan was also the inaugural occupant of the Virgil S. Ward Professor of Education Endowed Chair from 1996 to 1998 and was appointed to the university’s Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professorship from 2002 to 2004. He has held the Charles S. Robb Professorship since 2004. “In addition to being a great honor, holding an endowed chair provides resources that allow me to pursue the research, writing, and scholarship I like to do,” says Professor Hallahan. The endowment has also provided some discretionary funds he has often shared with students who needed help traveling to professional conferences. The chair even serves as a recruiting tool, he says, attracting high quality doctoral students to a professor with an honorary title. Now, settled into his new office in Bavaro Hall, Professor Hallahan looks back over his career with satisfaction. “Special education is a high need area, so you feel like you’re doing some good in this field,” he explains. “And I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with so many good students and well-respected colleagues at Curry.”

“Holding an endowed chair provides resources that allow me to pursue research, writing, and scholarship.”

The Charles S. Robb Professor of Education

was funded by Bahman Batmanghelidj of McLean, Virginia, as a lasting tribute to Senator Charles S. Robb’s accomplishments as a champion of education in Virginia. Robb served in the U.S. Senate from 1989-2001. He was the 64th governor of Virginia from 1982-1986.

Recipient of the William C. Lowry Scholarship

timothy a. jenson

“I

want to help students see math the way that I see it—as a great tool for everyday problem-solving that all works together beautifully,” says Timothy A. Jenson, 2010 recipient of the William C. Lowry Scholarship. “I want to be the kind of teacher that helps students become eager to learn.” He didn’t always know that someday he would be sharing his passion for advanced mathematics with high school students. Eventually, however, the numbers added up for Timothy. After earning a bachelor of science in computer engineering at U.Va., Timothy had a job waiting as a programmer for a local firm. When the economy went south and his position was cut, Timothy decided to try a different career path. “My mother is a math teacher, so it was always a career I had interest in,” Timothy says. “I also really liked math and education, so it seemed like a great fit.” Once he got into Curry, he says, “I knew this was the direction I wanted to take.” Now in his second year of Curry’s post-graduate master’s degree

program in secondary mathematics, Timothy is student teaching at Charlottesville High School. “Curry provides great opportunities to get field experience in education,” he says. “You don’t really know how to teach until you actually teach something to students. It’s a great education in how to be the best teacher you can.” Timothy appreciates the Lowry Scholarship because it reduces the amount of debt he will have to pay back once he begins teaching full time. A smaller student loan payment is a huge benefit to any graduate trying to get by on a new teacher’s salary. He plans to teach upper mathematics subjects, like pre-calculus and calculus, as well as computer science. “I think the upper math subjects can be tricky and seem irrelevant to students, but I hope to change their opinion,” Timothy says. “I also like teaching introductory computer programming. Seeing their reaction when students input a program and it does what they planned is a wonderful thing.”

Beautiful Bavaro Hall Bavaro Hall Dedication July 16 “Today, we are commemorating a great transformation in the life of the Curry School,” Curry Dean Bob Pianta said in his remarks at the Bavaro Hall dedication on a balmy summer morning. “Bavaro Hall is a world-class building,” Pianta said. “It will foster collaboration, interaction, the sharing of ideas so critical to academic life. It will connect the Curry School to the University community and to our partners in the region and throughout the country, and it will attract talent, ideas, and energy.” The building was completed just in time for John T. Casteen III to participate in his last official event before stepping down as U.Va. president. He told the summertime crowd that the building speaks to him about the relationship between the past and future of the University. He added that Bavaro Hall makes a clear

Fundraising Priorities Although last year we achieved the Campaign goal set for the school back in 2004, much work remains to be done. A first-rate faculty needs resources to take innovative and effective programs to many more children, teachers, and schools. We must also increase support for students, so we can attract the best and most diverse student body possible. We will work to achieve the following fundraising priorities in the remaining years of the Campaign: Student Support

Judy Bowns

R

eferring to Judy Bowns as a drama queen might be going a bit far. She definitely presides over drama, however, and Fairfax County Public Schools and The Cappies are her domain. As the school division’s theatre arts and dance specialist, Judy is chief advocate for the performing arts and their role in education. Judy is also the co-founder and director of The Cappies, as well as a proud Wahoo and loyal supporter of the Curry School. Judy came to Fairfax County in 1970 as an English teacher. In 1998, she began supporting arts education from the county administrative level in the Fine Arts office. “For some students, participation in the arts is the only thing that keeps them coming to school,” she observes. “Then we can say, ‘but you also have to pass your classes.’” Judy also believes that theater offers an alternative means to connect with kids who learn differently. “If students aren’t learning in the traditional way, they need the opportunity to learn in a way in which they can engage and invest,” she says. For the past few years, she has led

an initiative called Drama to the Core. Theater teachers work with teachers in the core subject areas of science, mathematics, social studies, and language arts to develop curriculum for delivering content through theater strategies. “Educators in Fairfax County are beginning to recognize that kinesthetic learning can make a difference,” she says. Judy’s crowning achievement is The Cappies, a critics and awards program for high school theater and journalism students that she and the late Bill Strauss founded in 1999. Each June Judy co-hosts a Kennedy Center awards gala, which she calls “a high school version of the Tony Awards.” What began as a county program quickly expanded throughout the entire metro Washington, DC, area and now encompasses over fifty-five schools. Other regions have picked up the idea, and fifteen Cappies chapters have sprung up across the U.S., along with three in Canada. Despite the astounding success of The Cappies, Judy had fostered a different dream for over three decades while

“Every person needs to look at what they can give back — no matter how small — in order to perpetuate the cycle.”

she worked in Virginia schools: a degree from the University of Virginia. She finally realized that dream when she walked the Lawn in May 2005 and received her master’s degree from the Curry School’s social foundations in education program. She took all her coursework through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies’ Northern Virginia Center. “I really, really enjoyed those two years and two summers,” she says of her time working on her degree, “and the flexibility of the program was a perfect match for my schedule.” Because she feels so fortunate to have been able to attend the Curry School, she began making monthly donations to the Curry School Foundation in 2007. “I’m thrilled to do it,” she says. “Every person needs to look at what they can give back—no matter how small—in order to perpetuate the cycle.” And then just a hint of drama creeps into her voice: “Truly the greatest gift is the chance to give back. At this point in my career, it’s not only an opportunity but a moral obligation for me.”

“T

24

hank you for making my dreams possible.” Last spring, Joseph Moore sent this heartfelt message to a beloved former teacher in the form of an endowed Curry School scholarship established in her honor: the Viola Reavis Robinson Scholarship. Joseph readily admits that as a rambunctious eight-year-old living in Southside Virginia, he was not happy to learn that Mrs. Robinson would be his third grade teacher. She had a reputation as a strict disciplinarian who made

c u rry schoo l of e d u c atio n fo u n d atio n

students memorize poetry and asked them every Monday morning if they had attended church or Sunday school. At the end of that school year in 1966, Joseph couldn’t wait to be rid of her and was dismayed to encounter her again the next fall in his fourth-grade classroom. “She fell in love with our class, and followed us all the way through elementary school,” says Joseph. At Brunswick County’s Red Oak Elementary students remained through seventh grade.

Although the parents had always been thrilled about Mrs. Robinson’s dedication to their children, the students only gradually began to understand how important she was to their wellbeing. “She was with me at pivotal points in my life,” Joseph said. “I was really not aware until high school how much she was doing for me behind the scenes.” Through his parents’ separation, his grandmother’s death, and the trauma of school desegregation, Mrs. Robinson was the one stabilizing influence in Joseph’s life for five formative years. “You are a good student.” “Concentrate on the things you can control, not on the things you can’t.” “Always do the right thing. There’s no substitute for integrity.” “Work hard. Do an excellent job the first time.” “Choose your friends with care; you become who they are.” These were the messages Mrs. Robinson ingrained in her students. “She gave us a moral compass,” says Joseph, one that has served him well through school, college, and a successful career in corporate America. When he recently retired as a human resources executive at Verizon Communications, he decided to follow

another of Mrs. Robinson’s adages. “The world should be a better place because you were in it, so give back.” Joseph says it has been his life’s goal during their forty-five year relationship to live up to this calling. Mrs. Robinson maintains her home in Lawrenceville, VA, and Joseph still keeps in touch via monthly phone calls. “I wanted to do something for her that had a sense of permanence,” says Joseph, “so I decided on trying to educate other teachers in her likeness.” He chose the Curry School, because Mrs. Robinson earned her master’s degree here in 1976 and had a very good experience, Joseph says. The Viola Reavis Robinson Scholarship will specifically benefit African American women seeking a master’s degree at the Curry School. Joseph hopes that someone who reads about this gift will be moved to do something similar for another educator. “Teachers are unsung heroes in our country. They are the architects of our society,” he says. “We owe them a great deal of gratitude for how they sacrificially give of themselves. In some instances they serve in borderline parenting roles for children whose parents are unavailable. We need to do more to support them.”

“I hope that someone who reads about this gift will be moved to do something similar for an educator.”

At the annual Curry School Student Awards Luncheon last April, Joseph met Whitney Bullock, first recipient of the Viola Reavis Robinson Scholarship. “She was definitely the right choice,” Joseph later said about Whitney. “She so reminded me of the type of student Mrs. Robinson herself would have chosen to support.”

Mac and Elsie Thompson

28

either Mac nor Elsie Thompson holds a degree in education. Yet, for two decades this pair of Virginia Law School graduates has been tirelessly advocating for Curry, volunteering their time and giving generously in support of Curry’s goals. Although the majority of donors to the Curry School Foundation have always been alumni, the desire to improve education is not limited to our graduates. Realizing this, in the 1980s Curry began strategically targeting a broader audience with messages about our mission and achievements. Mac, a Charlottesville businessman and attorney, first learned about Curry’s work as a result of those efforts. A persuasive alumna invited him to visit the school’s Education Day program in 1989. Both Thompsons have long been advocates of education and youth services in central Virginia. Elsie, who is also a lawyer, is a founding board member of the local Boys & Girls Clubs organization. Mac had volunteered in a tutoring program for inner city kids while he was an undergrad at Yale. Back in his hometown of Richmond before entering law school, he spent a summer teaching fifth- and sixth-grade English and history at the Hanover School for Boys, a juvenile detention facility. “It was easily the hardest job I think I’ve ever had,” Mac says, but his belief that all children deserve a good education was only strengthened.

c u rry schoo l of e d u c atio n fo u n d atio n

At that long-ago Education Day program, Mac was impressed by Curry’s five-year teacher education program and its emphasis on subject-area expertise. He became convinced that the Curry School needed, as he puts it, “more people on its team.” “Education is the foundation for young people to have hope. A lot more could be done to make a difference,” Mac says. He believed Curry was on the right track to make that difference. Mac was soon invited to join the Curry Development Committee. In 1990, he became a charter member of the Dean’s Council, pledging to give for three years in a row. He co-chaired the committee leading the Curry School’s first ever capital campaign, which raised $22.4 million between 1993 and 2000. Then, he joined the Curry Foundation board of directors, where he is currently serving his fifth three-year term, including a term as chair. Mac and Elsie have supported a number of Curry initiatives, including a significant gift to the Capital Campaign for Bavaro Hall. Their names can be found annually near the top of the donor honor roll for their unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund. This year, in addition to an Annual Fund gift, they designated a special donation to provide McGuffey Reading Clinic scholarships for students at Charlottesville High School who struggle with reading but could not afford the tuition.

“A little help can make a huge difference to children in our community,” Mac says. After 20 years of supporting the Curry School, the Thompsons are pleased that the Curry mission has become more focused and that its national stature continues to grow. They are also happy that Curry has attracted so many friends and supporters—many of whom, Mac and Elsie would be too modest to say, were likely influenced by their advocacy. “While its work has national impact, Curry is also a tremendous resource for our community, and we wish to encourage that,” says Elsie. “We invest in it. Our giving is, in part, a reflection of Curry’s commitment to its neighbors.”

A Bequest from a Thoughtful Educator

L 32

inda Karen Miller has always seen herself as a teacher-historian—both an educator and a passionate practitioner of her discipline. She is also an insightful alumna of the Curry School who recently established a bequest supporting two funds that will benefit educators. Linda, who began teaching in the 1970s, spent her career working at a seemingly frenetic pace. While holding down a full-time teaching job in northern Virginia, she took master’s degree coursework from the Curry School (completing her degree in 1978), wrote grants for special projects, developed dozens of curriculum units, published articles, and traveled around the world. She only took a break—of sorts—to spend a year on Grounds working on her education doctorate, which she completed in 1991. She didn’t earn her Ed.D the easy way either. She minored in constitutional law, putting in 15 hours of coursework at the Law School. Her thesis examined the federal marshals and how federal intervention of domestic disorders is portrayed in school textbooks. “My experience at U.Va. was wonderful all around,” Linda says. “I had such unique opportunities and the chance to expand my potential.”

c u rry schoo l of e d u c atio n fo u n d atio n

At Fairfax High School, where Linda taught world history and American government, she engaged students in historical inquiry of primary sources and brought world cultures to life through role playing and characterization. She had taken drama classes in high school and college and found many ways to incorporate acting in her instruction. Over her 30 years of teaching, Linda’s work both inside the classroom and out earned her scores of accolades. Her first award, “Outstanding Teacher Historian” was presented by the United States Capitol Historical Society in 1986. After she accumulated several teacher-of-the-year awards from various organizations, including the National Council for the Social Studies and the Organization of American Historians, she was named the Curry School’s Outstanding Secondary Teacher in 1997. She continues to receive honors even though she retired from secondary school teaching in 2002 and moved to Las Vegas. Until last spring she taught courses part-time at the College of Southern Nevada. In 2006 she published Put a Little Acting into Your Teaching (NSS Press). She continues her work as a historical interpreter, frequently playing the role of Helen Stewart, who is known

a a ro n m a y e s

as The First Lady of Las Vegas. She is also an active member of the Las Vegas UVA Club. Because Linda is so passionate about education and wants to support other educators, she has had the foresight to create a planned gift to the Curry School. She has included a bequest in her will that will establish two funds. The first will create the Linda Miller Fellowship Fund for doctoral students in social studies. “I received a fellowship when I was working on my doctorate, and I wanted to do that for others,” Linda says. Ultimately she hopes to spark others to successful careers that will impact both K-12 students and the field of social studies. She also wants the Curry School Foundation to be able to continue offering annual awards to outstanding alumni teachers, so a second fund will provide support for monetary awards. “It’s important to set up plans in advance for your estate rather than leaving it for someone else to do later,” she notes. “It’s the best way to make sure that your legacy continues to make an impact.”

Because Linda is so passionate about education and wants to support other educators, she has had the foresight to create a planned gift to the Curry School.
