Our Extravaganza committee, under the inspired leadership of Maggie and Ken Gorman and Alan Scimeca, has worked tirelessly to ensure an unmatched evening with chances to support Elgin Academy certain to appeal to everyone here. Our Development Office, led in this effort by Shannon Howell and Marnie Kut, has played a crucial role in supporting the committee’s work, putting in countless hours and working endlessly behind the scenes to solidify all of the many details necessary for the event. Dani Smiley, a board member and former chair of this event with her husband George, also deserves a special note here for her ceaseless work as a volunteer. And of course, too many people to count or mention accumulated the inspiring items in the room or sponsored the many facets of this great evening. Thank you to all involved in the execution of this event for the support of Elgin Academy that your involvement signifies. Your work will allow us to continue to take learning personally, and we are so grateful. Taking learning personally is more than a catch phrase for us. It is a daily approach that has at its foundation small class sizes and the development of crucial relationships. It is from the environment these relationships create that students can truly take the necessary risks to construct their own learning, and this environment in turn ensures that this learning can be active and suited to each student. And when those conditions exist, students can interact with material in a way where learning becomes permanent and habits become ingrained. With that base, students are poised to enter the world with a deep understanding of both facts and of how they learn that they can then use to impact those around them in crucial ways. I can assure you that we are good stewards of your generosity and that every dollar you spend here tonight goes to the worthy goal of ensuring this innovative and influential education for your children every day. AUCTION RULES Silent Auction items and raffle tickets will be recorded on wireless technology provided by BidPal. Live Auction and donations to the Faculty Staff Compensation Fund are not recorded in the BidPal device/application. Elgin Academy requires that all items be paid in full at the auction. Payments may be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. All sales are final. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used one year from March 12, 2016. According to the Internal Revenue Service, only the amount paid for an auction prize “in excess of the actual cash value of the prize” is tax deductible. All values specified at the auction are based on a good-faith estimate of each item’s fair market value. Donors contributing goods and services to be used in the Auction may be eligible for charitable tax deduction(s) to the extent allowed by law. Check-out will begin at 10:00 PM. LIVE & SILENT AUCTIONS Live Auction Rules The Live Auction will begin after the serving of dinner on March 12, 2016 and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for previewing items prior to bidding. All bidding in the Live Auction will require a bid number which will be given to you at check-in. Silent Auction Rules Each item in the Silent Auction is assigned a number and listed on your BidPal application. A description of the auction item and the assigned number is also on the display table and listed in this catalog. Persons wishing to place a bid should enter all bids and maximum bids on the BidPal application. Bids may be placed in any of the event’s designated areas. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum figure stated in order to constitute a valid bid. Only an authorized person can nullify a bid. All sections of the Silent Auction will close promptly at 9:45 PM. Check-out will open at 10:00 PM. The closing bid constitutes the winning bid.

Each year at Extravaganza we take time to support our most treasured asset, the Faculty and Staff of Elgin Academy, with a spot auction for the Faculty Staff Compensation Endowment Fund. Donations at all levels will be taken at the beginning of the Live Auction and will be placed directly into the Fund. This fund is used for various purposes related to compensation and ultimately is in place to help recruit and retain our wonderful teachers. We thank our faculty and staff who personify the Academy’s mission and core values, and we thank them for taking learning personally to enrich the lives of each and every student at Elgin Academy.
