DEAR FRIENDS: Thank you so much for coming together for Extravaganza 38! This gathering is the product of so much work by so many. Our Extravaganza committee, under the enthusiastic and creative leadership of Leanne and Joe Klein, has met ceaselessly to ensure an unmatched evening with chances to support Elgin Academy sure to appeal to everyone here. Our Development Office, led in this effort by Shannon Howell and Marnie Kut, has played a crucial role in supporting the committee’s work, putting in countless hours and working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure all of the details of the event. And of course, too many people to count or mention here accumulated the inspiring items in the room this evening. Thank you to all of the many people involved in planning. I would be remiss if I did not mention our sponsors, who are listed on our web site, in this program, and throughout the room tonight. I am thankful to all of them for their generosity, both toward this event and, in many cases, toward Elgin Academy at a broader level. And, of course, I am thankful for the overwhelming support of Jimmy John Laiutaud (’82) and Jimmy John’s, who have underwritten our expenses for this event and provided us with a dollar-for-dollar match at a certain percentage of the revenues. These magnanimous donations have given us the extraordinary chance to impact our students in unprecedented ways. As you peruse the room it is worth remembering what we are here for. Elgin Academy endeavors to provide an unmatched education that features small classes at the same time that it offers a wide-ranging, liberal arts curriculum taught in the most innovative ways and emphasizing experiences that prepare students to interact with those outside of our school’s walls. It does this for children from three years of age to students who are ready to venture off to the best colleges in the world in a mere three months. We undertake this ambitious mission by hiring the best faculty in the area, admitting able students who value education, and bringing them together into optimal situations to learn. I am privileged to be able to watch it all, and I am so proud of the work that these groups do when they get together. I can assure you that we are good stewards of your generosity and that every dollar you spend here tonight goes to the worthy goal of providing a better education for our students every day. Thank you again for your partnership in support of these deserving students. Your coming together tonight is a powerful symbol of how you value what we do, and I am so thankful for your presence. Enjoy your evening and bid very high!
Seth Hanford Head of School
Thank You Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate and support Elgin Academy. Tonight we will introduce, and you will meet, this year’s Extravaganza Planning Committee of volunteers and staff. Please take a moment to thank them because nothing that you see, hear, or experience tonight would be possible without their devotion and commitment to the students of Elgin Academy. Both of us are forever grateful to our tremendous Extravaganza 38 Planning Committee. The many accomplishments of Elgin Academy students and graduates are a reflection of the Academy’s dedicated faculty, outstanding academic programs, and diverse extracurricular activities. Tonight we come together as a community to support the students of Elgin Academy and to inspire them to make a difference, secure in our belief that they, in turn, will inspire us. Your support is impactful individually but becomes even more powerful when combined collectively with the efforts of our Elgin Academy community of family and friends. There is nothing more compelling than witnessing the personal, academic, and professional growth of our students – there is nothing more fulfilling than knowing that you helped make that happen. Tonight, we ask that you eat, drink, dance, and laugh, but before you leave us tonight, find your way to inspire the dreams of an Elgin Academy student and go home fulfilled. Thank you for all you do for the students of Elgin Academy.

Come Together in Support of our Teachers Each year at Extravaganza, we take time to support our most treasured asset, the Faculty and Staff of Elgin Academy with a spot auction for the Faculty-Staff Compensation Endowment Fund. Donations at all levels are taken during the Live Auction and will be placed directly into the Fund. This fund is used for various purposes related to compensation and ultimately is in place to help recruit and retain our wonderful teachers. We are so pleased to have many of our faculty and staff in attendance here tonight, and we are especially delighted to honor three retiring teachers who personify the Academy’s mission and core values. They embody the academic expertise, dedication to students, and commitment to life-long learning that generations of students and alumni have come to expect from their Elgin Academy mentors. Let’s show our Faculty and Staff how much we appreciate them by raising those paddles high tonight!
arrived on campus in 1972 and has spent the intervening 43 years giving his all to Elgin Academy. During his tenure Mr. Fletcher (or “Fletch” as he is affectionately called) has taught nearly every math class that the Academy offers. He has been an advisor, coached boys and girls tennis, been the attendance officer, served as the keeper of caps and gowns, handed out the locker keys, and has even driven a bus route. The longest serving faculty member in the history of Elgin Academy, Fletch is the quintessential career independent school teacher who has helped out this school that he loves in whatever way he could whenever it needed him and has seized every opportunity to engage with and educate students both in and out of the classroom. Alumni from five decades will be glad to know that they will still be able to check in with Fletch and his wife Jane at alumni events since they’ll be close by in Huntley, IL enjoying a well-earned retirement.
is completing her 26th year teaching sophomore and senior English in our Upper School. Her careful nurturing of students’ personal voices and her expert staging of classroom discussions which allow students the safety to disagree and empower them to take intellectual risks are hallmarks of her teaching. College freshmen are eager to come back to campus and tell Ms. Merrill how well prepared they were for their college English classes and how grateful they are for having acquired the thinking and writing skills necessary for success at the university level. In her classes, great literature of the past and present is made relevant to the future. When students leave her class they are better prepared to contribute to the complexities of the world because they have become at home in the world of ideas. Her quirky soul will be right at home in eclectic Austin, Texas where she will retire with her husband Mike at the end of this school year.
has, for 22 years, been creating memorable school experiences for some of Elgin Academy’s youngest learners. After teaching both 2nd grade and then Kindergarten for several years, she founded EA’s Early Childhood program for 3 and 4- year-olds in 1999. Mrs. Hannert brings to the classroom a friendly and relaxed disposition, an organized routine, and a sense of humor children love. She believes in carefully setting the stage for discovery and then watching growth take place. In recent years the school has taken advantage of Mary’s extensive knowledge of child development and her interest in pedagogy as she led the faculty in the role of Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs. Her students, from the smallest preschoolers to the juniors and seniors in her Early Childhood Education class, feel welcome to express their own curiosity and creativity as they make the classroom an extension of themselves. When she leaves in June, Mrs. Hannert and her husband Todd are looking forward to moving to Minnesota and spending more time with their grandchildren.

This year, Elgin Academy has created a Technology Committee composed of faculty/staff, parents, and students who are working together to increase the technological footprint in our classrooms and curriculum. The committee is hard at work collecting our current best practices and is investigating additional classroom technologies with experimental implementation in the 2015-2016 school year. While the committee’s work is just getting started, they have begun a process that will lead to many technological additions at Elgin Academy. Tonight, we are asking you to come together to help support these enhancements by donating to our Fund-A-Need. Monies raised will be used to add new equipment such as the 3D printer you see here tonight. Printers such as this will be used across the divisions to augment the learning in the classrooms. Upper School Chemistry students will be able to design and print molecules for study, Middle School students will fuse together technology and art by creating sculpture, and Lower School students can learn first-hand what it is like to hold a dinosaur skull in their hand. The possibilities are endless. We thank the committee for their hard work and dedication to this process and we thank you for your critical support to help us achieve all that is possible.
