Welcome to Extravaganza 37 and thank you in advance to the many of you who have gathered at Stonegate to support Elgin Academy. This event occurs as we celebrate 175 years of this educational treasure, and it is a fitting way to both salute what this school has meant to so many and to play our part in sustaining it. This year’s theme is “Long Live Academy,” and as we raise our paddles, bid on our cell phones and buy raffle tickets, we are all playing a crucial role. The money we raise tonight goes into our operating budget and thus supports the entirety of the experiences that our students enjoy every day. As we reflect on our 175 years, we realize that today’s experiences might integrate more technology, or be delivered by our teachers through different methods, or take place in different buildings than they once did. Importantly however, the core remains the same. The great things that happen when interested, motivated students interact with passionate, committed teachers are innumerable. The result is doctors, lawyers, politicians, teachers, and community servants who make a difference in

the world around them. We have all benefited from this experience in one way or another, and tonight we honor the past, present and future of a great school that has great things ahead. As always, we ask you to bid high, whether it is online or in person at our event. The EA experience deserves our collective, generous support. Thank you to the myriad people who played a role in planning a vital and fun evening, especially George and Dani Smiley whose leadership has been essential to the success of this entire event and whose care for this school seemingly knows no bounds. Thank you as well to Marnie Kut who has played a leadership role in our Development Office as we planned this exciting evening. Thank you to the many people who are bidding online (our online auction can be found at www.biddingforgood.com/ElginAcademy and runs through March 11). And, to everyone, thank you for all you do to support our school; we are humbled by our partnership.

Good evening! It is with great pride that we welcome you to Extravaganza 37, “Long Live Academy.” It has been an honor to serve as Co-Chairs of Extravaganza again this year. George and I are so grateful to everyone on the amazing committee who has helped make this auction possible. We thank each one of you for your time, dedication and hard work. We would also like to say “thank you” to this year’s auction sponsors, advertisers, item donors, volunteers and attendees. This auction would not be possible without you and we are grateful for your generosity. We are here tonight to celebrate our history, honor our tradition, innovation and excellence and do our part to continue the legacy that is Elgin Academy. Please get out your cell phones and raise your paddles high to bid and support our school!

Elgin Academy is sincerely grateful to all of our donors contributing goods and services for the Live, Silent, and Online Auctions. Show your support by patronizing our donors and advertisers. Thank you so much!

Silent Auction items will be recorded on wireless technology provided by BidPal. Live Auction, Raffle Tickets, and donations to the Spot Auction are not recorded in the BidPal application. Elgin Academy requires that all items be paid in full at the auction. Payments may be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. All sales are final. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used one year from March 15, 2014. According to the Internal Revenue Service, only the amount paid for an auction prize “in excess of the actual cash value of the prize” is tax deductible. All values specified at the auction are based on a good-faith estimate of each item’s fair market value.

Check-out will begin at 10:00pm. Attendees may choose to pre-authorize their credit card at check-in. You may pick up your items at the conclusion of the auction after showing an Extravaganza Volunteer a paid receipt at the auction display table at the time of departure. In the event that Auction items need to be packaged and shipped to the owner’s preferred address by Elgin Academy, the winner will be responsible, in advance, for all shipping and handling expenses. For the purposes of determining the charitable tax deduction of your purchase of admission(s) to Extravaganza, the value of the food and beverages that you received for each admission is $80.

Donors contributing goods and services to be used in the Auction may be eligible for charitable tax deduction(s) to the extent allowed by law.

Experiences Raffle – A limited number of tickets were available for purchase at 1/$50 or 3/$125 prior to March 15, 2014. The drawing will be held on March 15th at the beginning of the Live Auction for a chance to win the choice of one of three trips. The winner need not be present.

Langham Hotel Raffle – Tickets will be for sale on March 15th for a chance to win an overnight with afternoon tea at the Langham Hotel in Chicago. The price of each ticket is $20. The drawing will be held prior to the start of the Live Auction. The winner must be present.

The IRS has taken the position that amounts paid for chances in raffles, lotteries, or similar drawings are not gifts and therefore do not qualify as deductible charitable contributions.

Live Auction Rules The Live Auction will begin after the serving of dinner on March 15, 2014 and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for previewing items prior to bidding. All bidding in the Live Auction will require a bid number which will be given to you at check-in.

Persons wishing to place a bid should enter all bids and maximum bids on the BidPal application. Bids may be placed in any of the event’s designated areas. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum figure stated in order to constitute a valid bid. Only an authorized person can nullify a bid.

Silent Auction Rules Each item in the Silent Auction is assigned a number and listed on your BidPal application. A description of the auction item and the assigned number is also on the display table and listed in this catalog.

All sections of the Silent Auction will close promptly at 9:45pm. Check-out will open at 10:00pm.

This year we are pleased to be using BidPal, an interactive, wireless, automated silent auction bidding process. With BidPal, you can bid anytime, from anywhere, at the event using an application downloaded to your smartphone. You can bid on items, watch bids and be instantaneously alerted

when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. Look for volunteers with a green lanyard to assist you with BidPal. Bidding kiosks have been set up for individuals who do not wish to use their phone.
