Bumper Issue October AND November

George Neophytou

Celebrating Weddings! We have merged two issues into one and made one big bumper issue for November - this was not quite what we planned last month, so my apologies to everyone. This was a one off so all adverts will be carried forward. Our server started to fail in October - too small and too lacking in power to cope with the increased traffic we have had - so, rather and wait for it to fall over, we have been pro-active and upgraded it to a new, better, faster system. This has been far more time consuming than anticipated and came in the middle of an already hectic month! I have been in something of a tizz since the last issue - My elder son got married, so the family has been away celebrating our new addition, the beautiful Alex Griffin Peers featured left with my son Michael. Both send their love and thanks for all the best wishes sent from friends in Jรกvea. After the wedding we dashed to Conferences in Manchester and London and got back needing to recover but there has been no stopping nor any rest, since we returned to Jรกvea! Business seems to be on the up with a number of new businesses newly launched or in the pipeline. We have been overwhelmed with authors and there are some very interesting books due out soon. Having only been on personal email for most of the month I am still catching up with everyone ( I came back to several thousand emails in my various inboxes) !! Hoping to be earlier next month!

Dear Grapevine Friends, In many ways the last weeks have been extremely busy for me. I wanted to be present at all the events to which I’d been invited. In mid-September, I accompanied the Consul of the Netherlands to the opening in Xà bia of courses in the Dutch language for nurses planning to work in Holland. There were students from all over Spain participating in the courses. I signed the minutes agreeing to the start of the work on the new roundabout opposite Saladar supermarket. Then I visited the Port school to check on the road safety improvements which we have carried out. I was fortunate enough to attend and actively participate in the charity raffle organized by Sue Nutbrown at her home, for the benefit of various associations. It was a pleasure to see so many residents working for these good causes. The 25th was the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Xà bia Rotary Club and I took the opportunity to thank them for all the work done during these years and to give them my sincere congratulations on behalf of the whole town.

On October 1st I travelled to Valencia to sign an agreement with the rector of the Technical University and AMJASA to improve energy efficiency and savings. It was also time for the celebrations with our security forces, on October 2nd with the Local Police, and on October 12th with the Guardia Civil. (More pictures on pages 10-14) On the 5th and 6th I was invited to participate in a forum on Citizen Participation in Tangiers, Morocco where I explained the experiences of XĂ bia, the participants from countries as diverse as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France and Equatorial Guinea showed great interest in our model of sector councils. On October 8th the inauguration of the new Library and Social Centre in the Port took place. On the 9th we celebrated Valencian Community Day and presented the Villa de Xàbia prize for solidarity to the ISVH - Balcon al Mar residents´ association and the prize for civic values to Paco Reus. I focussed my speech in the defence of education as the key to the development of a country, a public education and guarantee of quality that is valid for all citizens. Another month - doesn’t time pass quickly, but with the help and collaboration of everyone we are achieving our goals. A warm greeting from your mayor. José

DID YOU SEE THE HEADLINES? JAVEA FOREST FIRE Brave expat international volunteer fire fighters were first to the scene in 12 minutes to help save the day, as 300 people were evacuated from their homes That’s the ISVH Bomberos of Balcon Al Mar.

They have all of their kit back in the Fire Station, cleaned and checked following the fire last week and ready for the next alert. This was the third large fire of the summer within our boundaries of Javea. Two other large fires occurred - one in Granadella in the early hours of the morning – and another in Tarraula late at night. Numerous small events have also taken place. These Bomberos are usually the first on the scene and can sometimes have extinguished the fire before the other Emergency Services arrive. For those of you who don’t know – the ISVH Bomberos are Javeas’ only Fire Brigade. Although they are based on Balcon Al Mar – they attend to fires and other emergency calls throughout the whole municipality of Javea. They are a voluntary team – they are on call 24/7 – 365 days of the year, they fight fires, take part in fire patrol and controls during the summer months, and assist with other emergencies for free. They take no money. Most of them have day time jobs and give a lot of their time to this service. This is an opportunity to give something back. The 4,000 euros a year that the local council give to the Bomberos, although greatly appreciated, falls far short of what they require to function. The deficit is made up from fundraising by the ISVH Bomberos such as monthly BBQs, social trips, mailboxes, donations etc. Their safety gear and equipment understandably costs a fortune. Due to the intensity of the recent fires and the size of the some of the heavy equipment used in fighting the fires - some of our hoses that supply water to the front line of the fires have been damaged beyond repair. These were patched up at the time of the fire but after checks at the fire station have been deemed as unsafe for future use. They are therefore looking for donations to help them replace the hoses and the target they need to raise is 4,600 euros. They also have an ongoing project to raise money to buy a more efficient pump for fighting fires in mountainous areas – to enable them to get more water to the fire in a shorter time. That’s another 4,500€. As you can see our grant falls a long way short of keeping our fire fighters equipped and safe. Your donations will give them the opportunity to replace the damaged kit so that they can continue as a professional and vital local fire service to Javea. There may be another fire tomorrow! The following pages show some of the brilliant donations received so far - but you will appreciate that this is an ongoing issue.

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 15 |

Anyone willing to donate will find donation tins at the following places Iceland Supermarket, Mr Punch and the Cancer Charity Shop in Javea Park, The Entertainment Store beneath Bay Radio, The Lancashire Bruja, Ruby Rocks Restaurant on the Arenal, CafÊ Cortado and Bombers Bar in the port and The German bakery at El Faro on Balcon Al Mar Various local businesses have already offered to organise fundraising events – and Ruby Rock Restaurant on the Arenal held a Halloween Party Remember - They are the only Fire Brigade in Javea, the full time crew is based in Denia. They are a voluntary team of men - and more often than not - they are first on the scene of the fire. Please try to help with any size of donation, large or small to help us to continue to provide this highly efficient and much needed service.

Your help will be very much appreciated from the Captain and his team, so thank you. contact Alan or Emma Lawton at emma_jane_lawton@yahoo.co.uk Telephone 648 052 911 Or call on Wednesday mornings between 10 and 12 to meet some of the fire fighters and look over the fire station

AMJASA DELIVERS NEW PUMP TO JAVEA’S VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS Mayor announces increase in municipal aid to acknowledge their work in fire-fighting in Jávea Thursday 21st November 2013: javeamigos.com The municipal water company AMJASA has delivered a new water pump to the Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcón al Mar, the volunteer fire service that has been taking a more active role in fire-fighting in the area recently, not least when they were first on the scene of the fire in La Guardia at the beginning of October. Michael Nickel, commander of the volunteer fire service said that the new pump is more powerful than their previous apparatus and will allow up to eight hoses to be attached to it. It will also serve to help pump out flooded areas, another level of assistance that the volunteers have provided. Essentially the primary fire-fighting unit in the area, this volunteer unit are often first to tackle local blazes, sometimes working late into the night to contain the flames or carefully monitor the aftermath. At the La Guardia fire, some of their equipment has become so damaged that it needed to be replaced and a local campaign was launched to raise the necessary funds to do so. AMJASA has stepped in to help by donating a special water pump valued at some 3,000 euros which can pump water under pressure to the location of the fires, which often break out in scrubland which can be difficult to reach. AMJASA CEO Josep Lluis Henarejos said that the donation acknowledges the great work done by the volunteer fire-fighters, bringing a sense of security to those who live in the forested areas of Jávea such as Balcón al Mar, La Guardia and on the slopes of the Montgó. In addition, mayor José Chulvi added his praise of the service and announced that the town hall intends to increase municipal aid to the group.

Doris Courcelles, councillor for “services, environment and beaches” was born in Belgium and studied at a French university. She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 30 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.

Doesn’t it look like the work of a Councillor can be risky and dangerous ???

Just kidding, I was not visiting a “Nuclear base”. I was just invited to discover the “CAMACHO” recycling plant of glass in Caudete, near Albacete a few weeks ago. I really learned a lot. First that the glass recycling rate in Spain meets the objectives set by the UE and the Spanish legislation: THE COEFFICIENT IN SPAIN RAISES 66,6 %. Well, if we compare this number to others, we still have a lot to improve. Belgium is THE example with 100% recycling. Germany 86,2 %, Ireland 77,8 % and France 69,8 %. Do you know that in the “Comunidad de Valencia”, there is an average of ONE container for 286 inhabitants and that one person recycled 15,3 kg in 2012 (it was 14,5 kg in 2011)? But, listen: in Jávea, we have ONE container for 133 registered citizens who recycled 51,4 kg last year!!! Does it mean that we are conscientious users or just good drinkers?

Mind you, we still have to make some efforts. When I was at the “recycling plant” I realized that we sin through negligence or ignorance: WE MUST NOT THROW PLASTIC BAGS IN THE GREEN BELL DEDICATED TO THE COLLECTION OF GLASS. They block the machinery of the trucks and require triage on arrival. Also a little piece of porcelain, ceramic or stone can ruin the entire content of the container. The best would also be to remove caps and capsules even if a modern magnetic system work on site ….. but I realize that this is asking too much! By the way, you are welcome to maintain the front of your house or the sides of your plot. That would help us a lot. As private owners, you can use the “punts verds” to throw your garden refuse, go free to “Ramblars” from 8am to 1.45pm and from 3pm to 6pm and Saturday 8.30am to 1pm or go to the “Ecoparque” open from 8.30am to 1.30pm and from 3.30pm to 5.30pm even Saturday. Please don’t leave a mess next to the normal batteries of containers! Enjoy your gardening!!!

Anyway, this visit organized by ECOVIDRIO was very constructive. We have to continue with our programme to raise public, hotel and catering industries awareness. When I see the underground containers open, it is obvious that we still have to work on the RECYCLING subject: some bars and restaurants using the special doors of the containers seem to ignore the the signs and mix their rubbish before throwing them in the “vidrio-glass” labelled container!!!! Maybe because the staff is tired and find it easier to do it this way.... but we should ALL respect civil rules, shouldn’t we? With the beautiful weather we had in October, who would believe that we are nearly in winter? Surely not the weeds which keep growing and re-growing everywhere!!!! As you might already know, the Town Hall has been able to engage, for six months, a special brigade to help us with work of forest fire prevention, adequacy

of municipal plots, cleaning of gulleys and riverbeds and clearing of public roads. This project was created under the urgent employment plan for the protection of the environment. The priority has been given to the forests, especially after the GRANADELLA fire that we suffered at the beginning of September. At the moment, the team is working in “Tossal Gros” preparing a firewall to isolate the properties from danger in the area of Tarraula and Covatelles. The next step will be Granadella. As far as municipal plots are concerned, another part of the staff has been working in “Rafalet” and

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 21 |

“Tesoro Park” while the third part of the team, in anticipation of the next heavy rains, was sweating in the “Barrancos” (ravines) of Lluca, Puchol, Tossalet, Castellans and Cuesta San Antonio. We have already cleared more than 80 streets or tracks, not a lot of people realize the jobs which have been done. It is obvious that you notice it more when it happens in your surroundings but we have to prioritize. The team will stay until end of January so..... please, “be patient” if you have weeds and branches invading your street. Doris

The Municipal Register

Updates

from XD The Municipal Register is an administrative register listing all the residents in a given municipality. This is commonly referred to as being ‘on the Padron’. The Register includes at least the following information: • • • • • •

Names and surnames. Gender. Habitual residence. Nationality. Place and date or birth. National ID Card Number*

All residents must inform their Local Council (Ayuntamiento) regarding any changes in their personal circunstances that modify the above information. Being listed in the Register demonstrates residency and habitual residence in the municipality. Nevertheless, it does not constitute proof of legal residence in Spain, neither does it confer on the listed citizen any right that is not conferred by current legislation. * National ID Card Number (Documento Nacional de Identidad, DNI), or the corresponding foreign national ID card number. For European residents, this refers to the number on the Certificate of Inscription in the Central Foreigners Register (Registro General de Extranjeros). This registration is compulsory, for all EU citizens who live in Spain. In the absence of this Certificate, the register will record the number of the identity document or valid passport issued by the authorities of the country of origin.

Registration with a local council is intended for counting and identifying the residents of a municipality for the purpose of providing public services ( health centres, education centres, public transport, etc) and to ensure they can sufficiently service the population. By law, each Local Administration has to provide certain municipal services to the citizens. The more inhabitants in a municipality, the greater the number of mandatory services. All Spanish residents must be listed in the Register of the municipality where they habitually reside. Registration is a necessary requirement for access to essential services such as schooling, primary health care and obtaining the Healthcare Card (Tarjeta Sanitaria). Being registered in a Municiaplity of the Community of Valenccia also provides other benefits for the citizen such as, for example, fiscal benefits in the matter of inheritance or specific fiscal reductions in acquiring the habitual home. Citizens should register in the municipality where they habitually resides. Citizens with more than one home in Spain,s hould to register in the municipality where they spend the most time during the year. Being listed in the municipal Register is free of charge. To proceed with the registration, the applicant must provide the original and photocopy of their DNI, Passport or Certificate of Inscription in the Central Foreigners Register ( if available), provisional document or their request for asylum or valid identity document for non-EU foreign citizen issued by a Spanish Authority. In any case, if the applicant does not have a document issued by a Spanish Authority, Spanish Law allows listing

in the Register with the number of an identity document or valid Passport issued by the country of origin. This does not imply, however, that there is no further obligation for inscription tin the Central Foreigners Register ( certificate of registration as a citizen of the European Union). Citizens need to provide to demonstrate habitual residence at the address such as, for example: • Deed of owneship of the property. • Rental contract. • Authorisation by the owner of the house to be listed using that address, together with a photocopy of the owner’s DNI, passport or other personal identity document. Sometimes, the presence of the house owner will be requested to demonstrate their agreement to the municipal officer. • In some Local Councils, other means of demonstrating home owneship such as the latest utility receipts ( water, gas, electricity, etc) may also be accepted. Non-emancipated minors and disabled elderly people will have the same residence as those looking after them or those with custody, or in their absence, their legal representatives, except when these provide written authorisation for residence in another municipality.. To list minors whose parents / guardians are separated or divorced, authorisation from both parents or the original and photocopy of the court ruling or regulating agreement demonstrating custody or guardianship must be provided. The Municipal Register is the guideline used to draw up the Electoral Roll. Local Councils send a monthly list of the changes occurring over the previous month to the corresponding Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office for the purpose of updating the Electoral Roll. Such changes include new listings and removals of listing of adult residents with respect to the last day of the previosus month as well as changes of address and other modifications regarding data included in the Electoral Roll. Nationals of other EU Member States must declare their wish to exercise the right of active suffrage in Spain in municipal elections and elections to the European Parliament, citing the local body or Member State voting district where they were last registered in the electoral roll. This declatation is made by completing the form CERE. DFA-1 in the Local Council where they are registered. This declaration is made once only and does not need to be repeated for each electoral process. So if a European resident has previously declared their intention to vote in municipal elections in Spain, they remain on the Electoral Roll while living in Spain until they formally request otherwise. If local authorities notice that the European citizen is living abroad, they will cease to include him/ her at the Register ( Padrón Municipal), as well as at the electoral roll ( Censo Electoral). In this case, the citizen

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 23 |

may need to request to be included again, by proving tha s/he meets all legal requirements. Citizens with the right to vote in local elections must also request their inclusion in the eElectoral Roll when they fulfil the following requirements:

• They have a residence card. • They have resided in Spain legally and without interruption for the minimum specified for each country. • They are listed in the Register of the municipality where they habitually reside. European citizens declaring their right to vote in Spain may not do so in another Member State. Generally speaking, voting is universal, free, equal, direct and secret. Voting in Spain is not mandatory, so there are no sanctions of any type imposed on those who do not vote. Even when they have previously stated their desire to do so. Citizens cast their votes at polling stations ( Colegios Electorales), which consists of Sections and Tables. On polling day, voters go to the polling station, table and section addigned to them and printed on the ballot card between 09.00 and 20.00h. As already mentioned, the ballot card states the table and section to which each voter must go. It is important to remember that the ballot card is not proof the voter’s identity, therefore you must take one of the following original documents with you, as specified by the electoral law: • • •

National Identy Document. Passport ( with photograph). Driver’s licence ( with photograph).

Voters who forsee they will be away from the place where they are entitled to vote on polling day or who are unable to go along to the polling station personally ( work, illness, etc) may cast postal votes. To do so they should apply to the Provincial Delegation of the Electoral Census Office on a form which can be obtained from any Post Office ( Correos). This application can be made from the day on which the elections are called until the tenth day before polling day.

The last day to be included in the Electoral Roll will be 31/01/2014 for local elections One week before the elections to the European Parliament (we still do not know the exact day of that election) will be the open deadline to be included to vote for your MEP for Spain.

MAROC CHALLENGE Winter 2013 The participants in the 2013 edition of the MAROC CHALLENGE are making final preparations for their departure from Jรกvea bound for Almeria and Morocco beyond. On Saturday 30th November the teams, who will have gathered with their cars alongside Avenida de la Libertad in the Arenal the day before, will begin their adventure, driving south to catch a ferry across the Alboran Sea to Nador on the coast of North Africa and head into the Sahara desert destined to arrive in Erg-Chebbi on Friday 6th December. The event brings together teams from Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Ukraine and Portugal. There will be 24 hours of cohabitation in which they will be able to see how well their competitors have prepared their cars for the challenge before sharing a themed departure night at Socco Lounge Bar. Promoter Rui Cabaรงo said that there will also be an exhibition of cars outside the venue and a selection of photos and videos from previous editions will be screened inside. Residents in Jรกvea will be able to emerge themselves into the atmosphere of this special rally throughout the week prior to departure of Saturday 30th November when a custom car will visit different parts of the municipality and the organisers have invited everyone to come and see the

cars for themselves in the Arenal area, vehicles that have been adapted to carry their occupants over a distance of some 2,000 kilometres across roads, tracks and African desert. A condition of competing in this budget rally is to use vehicles that are at least 16 years old so participants will be driving old all-terrain vehicles or those which have been customised to take part. The event has been specifically designed for enthusiasts with few resources and without sponsorship to support them so that they can experience a great adventure and feel the same sensation as those who take part in the famous Dakar Rally or PanAfrica Challenge. Another essential part of the Maroc Challenge is its solidarity as participants will be carrying school supplies, clothes and toys to hand out in the desert towns through which the rally will pass. The challenge has the support of the Departments of Tourism and Sports which see the promotional value of the event as well as the sporting side. Councillor Antonio Miragall (Tourism) said that the last two editions of the Maroc Challenge have been held in low season which has provided an incentive to visit Jรกvea at a time outside of summer and consequently spread tourism throughout the year. Councillor Juan Luis Cardona (Sports) said that the growth in interest in the event since its inception four

years ago has been strong, rising from 36 teams in the first edition to 117 teams which will be entering this year and it has become one of the most important 4x4 events around today. The Maroc Challenge covers 2,000 kilometers across the deserts and mountains of the Alawite Kingdom without the need for contestants to worry about the stopwatch, as this is not a race. They decide their own limits,

budget and the level of experience; choosing to sleep in a campsite or in choice hotels. Participants register with an old car and need neither experience nor to have participated in any previous raid. The main objective of the Maroc Challenge is to enjoy it and to make it to the beach at Essaouira.

Green Awards

Javea Players’ members returned from their summer break to a very busy ´autumn schedule of Rehearsals for their autumn production, Yes, Prime Minister which had its Spanish première at the Union Musical, Gata de Gorgos from Monday October 21 to Friday October 25. They made sure that everyone had a comfortable seat at the show by assembling new, wider seats for the Union Musical. Their first ‘in the round’ production, Christmas Carol, has been cast and will play their Studio Theatre from December2 t December 7. The cast includes Philip Anderson as Scrooge, Pat Kitching as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Helma Hermans as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Alice Gould as the Ghost of Christmases to Come. Not surprising, then, that a few Saturdays ago (on 21st September) they took a ‘breather’ and retired not to the Green Room but the putting green at Javea Golf Club. They held a little competition over eight holes prior to a very relaxed buffet lunch at which the ‘awards’ were presented. Margaret Harvey bagged the top award of two bottles of wine with a score of just 17 for the eight holes. David Garnett, the director of Yes, Prime Minister, took the booby prize with a score of ----- (we wouldn’t embarrass him by telling you). Four players – Jill Reid, Gerald Joy, Julie Roy and Cherry Cabban had holes in one. It was all great fun and a well earned break from a busy schedule.

Partners’ Newsletter Bringing you the news from our Official Partners across Spain

DON’T LOSE OUT ON YOUR UK PENSION OR BENEFIT PAYMENTS Our Partners

From the 31 January 2014, all payments made by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to accounts in a Euro zone country such as Spain will need an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC). After that date banks in the Euro zone will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details. If the DWP does not already hold these details for your account then

you will soon receive a letter asking for them. You should complete the attached form and return it to them as soon as possible. Failure to do so may mean your payments will be stopped. You can get the IBAN and BIC details from your bank account statement or directly from your bank. If you have not received a letter from the DWP then that will mean they already have your details so you don‘t need to do anything further. Those who receive

December 2 to December 7 The Javea Players’ Studio Theatre , Jåvea Curtain-up each evening at 8 pm

32 | The Grapevine October/ November 2013

The Magic Begins The magic of Christmas that is. On December 2, the Javea Players’ production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ opens at their Studio Theatre (in the street behind Bookworld) providing that magic in abundance. It runs until Saturday (December 7). Curtain-up each evening is at 8 pm. Directed by Lindsay Johnson, it is a theatre-in-the-round production so you are almost sharing the stage with all the wonderful characters Dickens created to tell his ghostly little tale. Characters like Scrooge’s nephew, Fred who is resolved to visit his uncle every year to wish him “Happy Christmas” and invite him to join him and his wife for Christmas dinner. Like Scrooge’s downtrodden clerk who slaves away three hundred and sixty-four days a year for half a crown a day yet still succeeds in laying-on a Christmas day feast for his wife and children, Belinda, Martha, Peter and Tiny Tim. Albeit the goose needs more than a little help from potatoes, gravy and apple sauce to satisfy their hunger and even Scrooge finds the meagre Christmas p pudding “rather small for such a large family”. Characters like Scrooge’s sister, his first and only love, Miss Frezziwig, fellow apprentice, Dick, cheerful shoppers and happy children and, of course, four ghosts. Much as you will enjoy being with all these for an evening what you will find really uplifting is being witness to the tremendous power of the magic of Christmas. Magic so powerful that in the course of a single night the odious, stingy, hard, unfeeling Scrooge is converted into a generous benefactor and unstinting spreader of Christmas goodwill. Magic far to good to miss. Should you really be resolved to get your Christmas off to a dickens of a good start, you are strongly advised to dropin at the restaurant, La Cocina on your way to the theatre. There chef/proprietor, Cliff Board has waiting for you a splendid Dickensian menu. Two courses are priced at 15 euros; three at 19 euros, both include a half-bottle of wine. These pre-theatre dinners are served from 6 pm to 7.15 pm and can be booked on 96 579 5140. Theatre seats are priced at 7 euros and can be booked on 96 579 4937 or at boxofficejp@gmail.com Javea Players are sponsored by Blacktower Financial Management Ltd.

Follow Agenda 21 on agenda21-xabia.wikidot.com Fifteenth Century graffiti in old municipal building received attention of Valencian restorers In September 2013, the press reported the poor state of the repair of the Casa de Candelaria - an old town house owned by the Town Hall. Works are being undertaken to ensure it doesn’t collapse and recently, some grafiti - charcoal drawings of sailing boats and human figures was discovered. This seems to be dated from the 15th century and has now received the interest of the Valencian Institute of Restoration and Conservation. Hopefully these drawings will be preserved with some interesting interior arches when the building is restored. From XAD: Los grafitis... Xàbia Restaurant gets a Michelin Star The Bon Amb Restaurant, on the Camí Cabanes/ Benitatxell road roundabout, has been awarded a star in the Michelin international guide to restaurants. The Michelin inspectors visit restaurants “under cover” and the Bon Amb had no idea they had been inspected, or indeed awarded a star. The restaurant is run by Alberto Ferruz and Pablo Catalá and it uses 80% local produce. Montgó Park budget halved In 2012, the budget for managing the Montgó Natural Park was 799,000 Euros, with €249,000 being spent on conservation and maintenance. In 2013, the budget was cut to 465,000 with only 65,000 for conservation and maintenance. The only expenditures not to feel deep cuts was the plan to watch out for forest fires at €191,000 and the elimination of invasive species at €25,000 From XAD: El presupuesto... Launch of Flexible municipal tax payments Xabia’s innovative system for flexible payments of municipal taxes has been launched. Xabia residents are encouraged to go to the simulator on the Town Hall’s website: https://tramites.ajxabia.com/planes-pago/simulador/ armed with their NIF/NIE and last year’s bills. Having completed the on-line form, to print it out and take it to the Citizen’s Attention Office (Portal del Clot) or the Economic office (Calle Mayor) to validate the payments schedule. Staff there can also help to configure the payment plan for people who are not net savvy. People who pay all their taxes in January will receive a 4% discount. There four different payment options. From Press Release.

Dog pound raided for fighting dogs Xàbia’s municipal dog pound, run in collaboration with APASA, has been raided three times in recent weeks. It is believed that the raiders are after dogs to use in illegal dogfights. Their recent target appears to be a particular rottweiler, aggressive towards people (it had been tethered continually in its earlier life, but is ok with other dogs). This time, no dogs were taken, though they were moved to different cages. A mastiff and an alsatian cross were taken in earlier raids. These dogs, though docile, would have been used as sparring partners for fighting dogs - and most likely killed. The pound is trying to improve its security measures. From Diarioinformatico.. Cleaning up the Montgó Xàbia’s Department of the Environment is cleaning up scrub from gulleys in the public area of the Montgó to enhance drainage and fire prevention. They arec also bringing to light old agricultural constructions in the area, such as bancales (terraces) which are an integral part of the traditional landscape. From Press Releas. Montgó Natural Park plans a promotional fair The governing body of the Montgó Natural park is planning a fair to bring together the traditions and handicrafts of all the municipalities in its area. This will be held on December 15 in Gata de Gorgos. From XAD: El Montgó.. IBAN numbers and SWIFT codes will be essential for all payments and receipts from February 2014 To make any financial transactions involving bank account numbers, an IBAN number will be necessary from February onwards. This includes payments made to or to be received from accounts within the same country – no longer just from abroad. Expatriates should note: Anyone who has money regularly paid into their bank accounts in the form of wages, invoices settled by clients, standing orders from an account or savings plan in the UK, or a pension will have to let the sender know what their IBAN code is. The Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, is contacting all State pensioners asking them to confirm their full account numbers and IBAN codes. The New UK TV Satellite Update Our feature from Jon Worby

Astra 2E, the new UK TV satellite was success- It may be that Astra 2Es reception in Spain will be similar to Astra 2F, the first new UK TV satellite. fully launched on the 29th September 2013. Since then it has been undergoing a series of tests at a “test location” of 43 degrees east. It is now thought that these tests have been completed and we are now waiting for the satellite to be moved from its test location to its “UK TV” slot at 28 degrees east. It will take about 10-14 days to do this manoeuvre, and so we expect this to be completed late November or December 2013. Only then will the new satellites true reception in Spain and the dish sizes required to receive its signal be known. But, unlike the rumours you may have heard, you should not lose ALL UK TV channels, as some of the UK TV channels, like some BBC ITV and Channel Five regions are available on the first new UK TV satellite, Astra 2F, which is available in the Javea area on a minimum of a 1m satellite dish.

If this is the case, then you will also be able to receive BBC1HD, BBC2HD, ITV1HD, C4HD and the new BBC HD channels soon to launch, all in full 1080 HD and subscription free on a 1m satellite dish. This is something which many “IPTV / internet TV” services and Smart TV systems cannot provide due to the limitations of the internet.

New BBC HD Channels. Some new BBC HD channels are expected to launch, rumoured to be on the 10th December 2013. BBC Three HD, BBC 4 HD, BBC News HD CBBC HD and CBeebies HD will all be available subscription free and in full HD on Sky HD and Freesat HD satellite receivers. They should be automatically be added to the relevant channel guides.

Channel Five HD Channel Five HD used to be available “free to view” – with a non subscription Sky viewing card. Channel Five have now moved their HD channel to the Sky HD subscription service. Perhaps a deal with Sky for the launch of other HD channels for Five USA and Five*? Maybe there will be a move by Sky signalling the end of these “free to view” cards, seeing as none of the main channels require a sky viewing card to view. All the latest news on our

ANOTHER DAY OFF

FIESTAS IN JAVEA - SANTA LLUCIA by Mike Smith Santa Llúcia is believed to have been a Sicilian saint who suffered a martyr’s death in Syracuse, Sicily around 310 CE. The Guilte Legende, a compendium of saint’s biographies compiled in the late Middle Ages, tells that she was seeking help for her mother’s long-term illness at the shrine of Saint Agnes in Sicily when an angel appeared to her in a dream beside the shrine. She became a devout Christian and refused to compromise her virginity in marriage to a pagan, prompting the man who she would have wed denouncing her to the Roman authorities. She was threatened with being dragged off to a brothel if she refused to renounce her Christian beliefs but they were unable to move her, even with a thousand men and fifty oxen. In response, the authorities decided to pile up materials around her to set a fire but she would not stop speaking, insisting that her death would lessen the fear of it for other Christians and being grief to non-believers. One of the soldiers speared her throat to stop her from speaking but his spear had no effect. Santa Llúcia was only able to die when she was given the Christian sacrament. In many medieval accounts, her eyes were gouged out prior to her execution and she is often depicted in art with her eyes appearing on a tray that she is holding. The fiesta has its root in pre-Christian celebration of Midwinter, an observance of the Winter Solstice and the “rebirth” of the sun as daylight begins to

lengthen again. The date is linked to the unreformed Julian calendar with December 13th as the longest night of the year. It is particularly celebrated in the Scandinavian countries where there are extreme changes in daylight hours between the seasons. The significance to the Christian faith, which often adopted pagan celebrations, is the annual struggle between light and darkness. Often seen as the start of Christmas preparations, it sometimes marks the inauguration of the nativity scenes (without the baby Jesus of course; he has yet to arrive to “bring light” to the world). The chapel of Santa Llúcia sits on top of a low conical hill just to the north of the town, the Tossal de Santa Llúcia. The current chapel dates from the 15th or 16th century – historians are still uncertain – and consists of a single rectangular nave with a gabled roof and a central arch of tosca stone. The current bell was installed in 2003, replacing the original 15th century bell, considered one of the oldest in the region which was believed to have once been located in the ancient chapel of Santa Anna, built in 1502. This old bell is now displayed on the ground floor of the Soler Blasco museum. It is believed that the chapel was dedicated to the saint after dedications to her apparently saved the town from attack by Moorish pirates. Although there are a number of special events

that take place before the main festivities, the celebrations begin on December 12th with an informal parade by the commision of loyal adherents which organises the Santa Llúcia celebrations. It tends to be a modest gathering of some 40 or so people but there is a wide range of ages from the very young to the very old. A band leads the way with a selection of traditional songs and they are followed by representatives of the local council and the members of the organising committee who carry baskets filled with delicious doughnuts and bottles filled with refreshing Mistela wine which they hand out to the neighbours peering out of their doors and windows as the procession passes by. The cavalcade travels through the dark narrow streets, the relative peace shattered by the thundercrackers and sky rockets thrown with some design by those taking up the rear. After an hour or so of walking in which the procession has visited the many districts of the old town, the parade arrives in the Calle de Santa Llúcia where the small shrine has already been decorated with flowers. More cakes and small plastic glasses of Mistela wine (and maybe even something a little stronger) are handed out to everyone present before a long string of loud bangers is laid out along the road surface and set off, a huge cacophony of noise that fills the street with smoke and debris. Until recently, there has been a modest firework display but it seems that the economic downturn has put paid to this particular part of the celebrations. The following morning, much of the neighbourhood has already been woken by the traditional ‘desperta’ in which thundercrackers and sky rockets break the early morning silence and almost overshadow the music that accompanies the procession. By now, a number of people have begun to make their way up to the top of the Tossal de Santa Llúcia, the little hillock that sits above the old town to the north and on top of which sits the small chapel of Santa Llúcia. In the centre of town, the organisers of the festivities gather outside the ancient church of San Bartolomé and, with the thunder of rockets contrasting with the delicate traditional music of the Xitimitabs, they begin the ‘romeria’ the pilgrimage to the chapel, a small procession which winds through the town and then climbs up the winding narrow track to the summit of the hill and the colourfully-decorated modest chapel square, the bell ringing out across the plain. Hot chocolate and cake await those who make the effort, which include a healthy number of schoolchildren

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 57 |

which should ensure that the traditions continue. At 11.00am - more or less - a special mass begins inside the chapel, so filled to the brim that people are forced to mill around outside, kept in touch with the proceedings inside by a speaker system. Shortly before midday, the bell rings again and the explosions of rockets ring across the plain below as the images of Santa Llúcia and Santa Barbara are carried out of the chapel and processed around the track that surrounds the building, accompanied by the music of the Xirimitabs. As the images are returned to their special niches inside the church, more fireworks are ignited and everyone now looks forward to the beginning of the Christmas celebrations. Let’s talk about sex… and making things fit together… That got your attention! Sorry – we’re not really going to talk about sex – but gender is very important in Spanish. Everything in Spanish has a gender – masculine or feminine - although strictly speaking it is the noun or naming word which has the gender rather than the actual thing. Most of the time it is easy to tell if the noun is masculine or feminine. Generally speaking, nouns that end in D, A, Z & IÓN are feminine, and everything else is masculine. There are of course some exceptions, but they are very few, and it’s best just to learn them as you go. My personal favourite ‘exception’ is ‘el problema’ – the noun might appear to be feminine, but ‘the problem’ is in fact masculine! Why do we need to know the gender of a noun? Simply because the gender of the noun dictates almost everything else we say!

unas mesas

To make plurals the rule is very simple: - if the noun ends in a vowel you add an ‘s’ to the end, if it ends in a consonant, you add ‘es’. Again there are very few exceptions.

Don’t worry too much though – Spanish is a very musical language, so that very often everything just rhymes.

la mesa – las mesas una televisión – unas televisiones el sillón – los sillones un armario – unos armarios

Unfortunately, because everything is either masculine or feminine – it means that here are several words for ‘the’, ‘a/an’ & ‘some’. But look how they fit together - how they rhyme.

And then when you want to start describing things – adding adjectives – they need to ‘fit’ too. ………..

& again, they’ll more often than not rhyme! Just remember that the adjective (describing word) goes after the noun (naming word). So the end of the adjective will change to fit the gender of the noun, in fact, everything which is ‘connected to’ the noun will have to ‘fit’ it. Let’s just start with some colours…….. red – rojo, yellow – amarillo, black – negro, white – blanco so that gives us…….. el vaso rojo - los vasos rojos un vaso amarillo – unos vasos amarillos la silla negra – las sillas negras una silla blanca – unas sillas blancas Singalong with this (go on, you know you want to!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4d2w2WhtH0 Of course, not all adjectives will conveniently end in ‘O’, in the basic form – some will end in L, E A, N or S – in fact, all adjectives will end in one of those 6 letters!! If an adjective is what I call a ‘LEANS’ word, then it doesn’t change for gender – although it does for plural. Here are a few ‘LEANS’ colours: blue – azul, green - verde, orange – naranja, brown – marrón, grey – gris of course, these unfortunately will often not rhyme el coche azul – los coches azules una mesa verde – unas mesas verdes un plato naranja – unos platos naranjas la puerta marrón – las puertas marrones el perro gris – los perros grises

Here are a few tonguetwisters - look for the rhyme Tres pollos bolos peludos. Tres peludos pollos bolos. Compré pocas copas, pocas copas compré y como compré pocas copas, pocas copas pagué.

La gata flaca panza blanca salta a la barca, va al mar, traga calamar. And look at how the adjectives ‘fit’ the nouns in this ‘For Rent’ advertisement:

SE ALQUILA Este apartamento precioso está en una calle tranquila cerca del centro del pueblo. Es un poco pequeño, pero está en un barrio muy agradable.También es muy barato. Tiene un dormitorio bonito, un cuarto de baño con ducha y aseo, una cocina moderna con horno, lavavajillas y nevera. ¡Todos son nuevos! El salón es muy cómodo y luminoso y hay un balcón enorme con cara al sur, y vistas maravillosas del mar y las montañas. Hay parking detrás del edificio. On a slightly different note – I’m always telling my students that listening to – and singing along to – Spanish music helps tremendously. Now that we’ve discovered that we can add video to this amazing magazine format, each month I’ll add a youtube of a popular Spanish artist, with the words on the screen. This might not be to your taste – but have a listen anyway! If you know of any Spanish artists, just put their name into the youtube search & add ‘con letras’ & you’ll get a selection. Enjoy! This is David Bisbal – Hasta el Final (until the end) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbUtgYLnwyA LOTS of ladies find him sexy – so that brings us nicely back to the title!!

15th Century Graffiti !! The Valencian Institute of Conservation and Restoration ( IVC + R) of Cultural Heritage of the Generalitat Valencia is interested in restoring graffiti found in the Casa de la Candelaria de XĂ bia. The regional agency provides support to the City of Javea for conservation of these drawings of the fifteenth century The Valencian Institute has been interested in the historical graffiti that have appeared in the walls of the house known as Candelaria, a municipal property being restored from its state of ruin. A few weeks ago, prior to the restoration of the building archaeological testing of the oldest layers of the walls revealed a set of fifteenth century drawings to the municipal archaeologist, Joaquim Bolufer.

The drawings represent various sailing vessels, two figures appear to be dancing and there is a warrior armed with a short sword and shield. The Graphite sketches are distributed through several walls of the upper floor of this house, which was originally a Gothic mansion and which has since undergone several expansions. The archaeologist and the mayor of Culture, Empar Bolufer, accompanied the director of IVC + R , Carmen Perez, who along with other technical Valencian agency are reviewing the house and taking pictures of graffiti. Perez showed interest in the establishment and preservation of the drawings and provided the technical and material support of the Valencian institute so they can preserve these vestiges of the medieval wall art. There is also interest in the building’s architectural elements such as the interior arches. Not surprisingly, this art work - even if it is graffiti - is of great cultural and historical interest. It is a unique source of information, providing conemporary insights into the popular culture of social groups that is not really recorded in written sources. In this case, it seems to reveal new aspects of the town and the anchorage of vessels in medieval times.

SONJA, female, Shelter since 16.09.2012 Labrador Mix, DOB 15.09.2010 – 52 cm

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 65 |

When Sonja came to the shelter, she had a big problem with her teeth. But proper treatment has cured her and she is well again. Sonja is a funny and charming girl with a simple character that loves everybody and likes to play and to run around. She will go anywhere with her new owner and she will do what she is asked to do. Sonja would be the right choice for a family with another dog who have time to play, to go for a walk and to have fun with her.

PURO, male, Shelter since 21.05.2011 Podenco, DOB 07.05.2011 – 50 cm Puro was found all alone on the street, while still being a puppy. We decided to put him in the kennel of Parma, a podenco mama which just fed her four puppies. This worked out well as mama accepted the new puppy and did not mind having five instead of four puppies. Puro is rather shy but he likes people if he gets acquainted to them. Another, older dog in the family could help him to familiarize and improve his trust in people even more.

MOBY, male, Shelter since 08.10.2012 Crossbreed, DOB 26.03.2011 – 66 cm Moby was brought to us by

his owner. He had bought him on a market, while he was still a puppy. But this puppy grew up and in the end the owner could no longer handle him. Moby is a huge but very elegant and lively boy. He is very active and has a lot of energy. He loves to run a lot and go for long walks. Moby is house trained, walks well on the lead and he likes both male and female dogs. He would need the space of a big garden where he could run around and play with friends.

MILA, female, Shelter since 26.11.2012 Crossbreed, DOB 15.10.2011 – 50 cm

Mila was found on a main road outside of Javea where she was running free and completely confused among all the cars. She was happy that none of them hit her. She walks well on the lead, likes all the plays which dogs can possibly play and she also likes the attention of people. She would be a good company for a family with another dog and sense for an active and sporty life.

We have had a busy time with our events. The coach trip to the Pedrer winefields and shoe factory together with lunch was very much enjoyed by over forty people. We then had the Mayor of JĂĄvea open the new isolation kennels and this was followed by a BBQ and various APASA stalls and music by Swingman Barry Peters. Barry also entertained us after the Dogwalk on the 22nd September. This was supported by people bringing their own pets and others taking rescue dogs from APASA. The event raised in excess of 400 Euros. We need every Euro we can get as the kennels are full and still more dogs coming in. If you think you can help by fostering a dog please do go along to the shelter and offer your help or ring Mandy on 639603880. We have been inundated with puppies who cannot always to into the shelter to until they are old enough and received all their vaccinations.

Your Health Even in Spain, Winter can be bitter especially at night As the cold weather rolls in, you may hear your windows rattle or feel a cold breeze through your back door, even when it is closed. These are sure signs of draughts stealing your heat and making it harder for you to stay warm. Stay Warm, Save Money, Be Healthy If your home is drafty or not well-insulated it could cost you hundreds of euros a year as you attempt to stay warm. It may also affect your health. While sitting in a draught does not make you sick, you should take notice if you feel chilled. “Your normal body temperature can drop after prolonged exposure to cold draughts,” says Andrea Tannenbaum, president of Dynamic-Living.com. “The elderly and those who have compromised immune systems need to protect themselves because a decrease in the body’s natural temperature can lower resistance to germs.” Tips to Help You Stay Warm This Winter Here are a few tips that will help you handle draughts and stay warm at the same time. Stay warm by plugging up drafty windows and doors with inexpensive insulation and draughts stoppers: If you have older windows, they might not keep the heat in very well. Plastic sheeting can be affixed over the whole window to provide a layer of insulation without blocking the light. The plastic helps you stay warm by stopping draughts as well as the cold that just seeps through the window pane itself. If you can see daylight through the edges of your doors that means they leak. You can’t cover doors with plastic sheeting, but a storm door will probably pay for itself within a few heating seasons. There are also inexpensive insulation kits for doors that have foam, magnets or fleece to seal the edges, and weather stripping to put along the bottom.

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 69 |

Draught stoppers for the base of doors and windows can be found in colorful and playful designs. You can also make your own. Sew a fabric tube and fill it loosely with dried beans, lentils or rice. Want to recycle? Cut the sleeve off an old shirt or fill tights or stockings you aren’t using anymore. If you have double opening windows, check each side to ensure it is fully closed on both the top and bottom. They sometimes slide down a little bit during the warmer months and will cause a draught if not closed properly. How to deal with draughts you can’t stop: Try rearranging your furniture to stay warm. If you feel a breeze on you while you sit in your favorite chair, consider rearranging the room to avoid draughts in the locations where you sit regularly. Ceramic space heaters are very cost effective for heating a small area and cost much less to run than trying to heat your entire home. For safety from accidents, make sure that your heater has a timer on it or remember to unplug it when you leave the room. Most of us use our ceiling fans only in summer, but try using the ceiling fan when the weather is cold too. Many fans have a reverse switch on them that will push down the warmer air that collects at the ceiling to help you stay warm. Bundle up to stay warm: Wearing several thin layers of clothes will help you stay warm in cold weather. The warmth from your body will get trapped in the air pockets between the layers. Long underwear is particularly good for helping you stay warm and dry. Keep a throw blanket handy to cover your feet or shoulders, or use a fleece shawl across your lap or around your shoulders to help you stay warm. Fleece blankets and throws are particularly useful, because they are incredibly warm but lightweight and less bulky than most other fabrics. Wearing fleece slippers around the house can help keep your feet warm. Look for non-skid bottoms because they prevent slipping and possible falls. Heat from external sources can be helpful. If you use a heating pad for warmth, limit the length of time it’s close to the skin to avoid a burn and always turn it off if you are sleepy. Some heating pads come with safety shut-off switches, which will turn off automatically after a set period of time. By Sharon O’Brien

Bringing Business Together in and around Jรกvea and Denia www.mabusinessclub.com & www.mabc.biz Dear Gaile, I hear that you have changed the meeting format? Yes, from Nevember we are meeting over a Business Dinner in local restaurants around Jรกvea and Denia. The first of these dinners was held at the Hongkong Chino Restaurant in the Port. It was an excellent event and we think that the revised format will prove popular. The informal atmosphere of dining together is a great way to build and strengthen networks. Does the change to Business Dinners mean that you will reduce the number of meetings? Yes, we think that it would be too expensive to dine out more than once a month as a Club, even though the meal costs are not high. We have agreed that we will meet up for dinner once a month, members are then free to meet up more informally between the main meetings, if they wish. Can I still bring guests? Yes, please do, there is usually time before the Dinner to chat and network and to meet other members, so guests are very welcome, providing that they attend with a member, or by arrangement with me - manager@mabc.biz So when will the meetings be in 2014? The first meeting after Christmas is the evening of the 16th January at Restaurant Asia on Ausius March near the Port. The following meeting is on the 20th February. Please check the website www.mabc.biz to check dates and locations. How do we know that you understand about business What have you done in the past that will help us now? Billie Holliday

William P. Gottlieb (1917–2006)

Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. It was said that she changed the art of American pop vocals forever. She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably “God Bless the Child”, “Don’t Explain”, “Fine and Mellow”, and “Lady Sings the Blues”. She also became famous for singing “Easy Living”, “Good Morning Heartache”, and “Strange Fruit”, a heartbreaking protest song which became one of her standards and was made famous with her 1939 recording. When Billie Holliday sings the blues, you believe she knows what she is singing about. Her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues, was ghost written by William Dufty and a movie was made starring Diana Ross. Billie Holiday was born in 1915 in Philadelphia, to Sadie Fagan. Her father, Clarence Holiday, a musician, did not marry or live with her mother. Sadie was thrown out of her parent’s home when she became pregnant. To say that Billie Holiday had a difficult childhood is somewhat of an understatement. She frequently skipped school and her truancy resulted in her being brought before the juvenile court and being sent to a reform school. By the age of 11, she had dropped out of school and returned to live with her mother, where neighbour raped her and she had to go into protective custody as a state witness when the man was arrested. After this, she found a job running errands in a brothel. During this time, Billie first heard the records of Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith and found her true love of the blues.

Billie Holiday shortly afterwards moved with her mother to Harlem where their landlady ran a brothel. Billie’s mother became a prostitute and, within a matter of days of arriving in New York, Holiday, who had not yet turned fourteen, also became a prostitute at $5 a client. Very soon afterwards, the house was raided, and Billie and her mother were sent to prison. On her release from prison, she started singing in various night clubs in Harlem. As her reputation grew, Billie played at many clubs, and the producer John Hammond, came to hear her. Hammond arranged for her to make her recording debut, at age 18, with Benny Goodman. Holiday was signed to Brunswick Records by John Hammond to record current pop tunes with Teddy Wilson in the new “swing” style for the growing jukebox trade. They were given free rein to improvise the material. Holiday’s improvisation of the melody line to fit the emotion was revolutionary. With their arrangements, Wilson and Holiday took pedestrian pop tunes and turned them into jazz classics. Most of Holiday’s recordings with Wilson

or under her own name during the 1930s and early 1940s are regarded as important parts of the jazz vocal library. She was then in her early to late 20s. In late 1937, Billie Holiday had a brief stint as a big band vocalist with Count Basie. The travelling conditions of the band were often poor and included one-nighters in clubs, moving from city to city with little stability. Holiday chose the songs she sang and had a hand in the arrangements, choosing to portray her then developing persona of a woman unlucky in love. Billie was fired by Count Basie, for reasons which are unclear and was hired by Artie Shaw just a month later. This association placed her among the first black women to work with a white orchestra, an unusual arrangement for the times. In situations where there was a lot of racial tension, Shaw was known to stick up for his vocalist and insisted she sit on the bandstand with other vocalists, but there was a lot of racist insults hurled onstage, especially when in southern states. When Holiday was asked to use the service elevator at the Lincoln Hotel, because white patrons of the hotels complained, this was the last straw. She left the band shortly after. Holiday was recording for Columbia in the late 1930s when she was introduced to “Strange Fruit”, a song based on a poem about lynching written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx. For her live performances of “Strange Fruit” she had waiters silence the crowd when the song began. During the song’s long introduction, the lights dimmed and all movement had to cease. As Holiday began singing, only a small spotlight illuminated her face. On the final note, all lights went out and when they came back on, Holiday was gone. “God Bless the Child” was Holiday’s most popular and covered record. Followed by “That Ole Devil Called Love”, “Good Morning Heartache”, “Big Stuff”, and “Don’t Explain”. She wrote “Don’t Explain” after she caught her husband with lipstick on his collar. Holiday’s drug addictions were a growing problem. She earned more than a thousand dollars a week from her club ventures at the time, but spent most of it on heroin. In 1947, Holiday was arrested for the possession of narcotics in her New York apartment. She was sent to Jail for nearly 12 months. Holiday stated that she began using hard drugs in the early 1940s. Because of her drugs conviction, her New York City Cabaret Card was revoked, which kept her from working anywhere that sold alcohol for the remaining 12 years of her life. Club owners knew blacklisted performers had limited work options, so they would offer them a smaller salary. This greatly reduced her earning power. She hadn’t been receiving proper royalties

The Grapevine October/ November 2013 | 77 |

for her work, so her main source of revenue was her club concerts. She seldom received any money from royalties in latter years. For instance, in 1958 Holiday received a royalty check of only 11 dollars. By the 1950s, Holiday’s drug abuse, drinking, and relationships with abusive men caused her health to deteriorate. Her last husband was a Mafia enforcer, who like most of the men in her life was abusive, but he did try to get her off drugs. In 1959, Holiday was taken to Metropolitan Hospital in New York suffering from liver and heart disease. She was arrested for drug possession as she lay dying, and her hospital room was raided by authorities. Police officers were stationed at the door to her room. She remained under police guard at the hospital until she died. In the final years of her life, she had been progressively swindled out of her earnings, and she died with $0.70 in the bank. She was 44 years old.

Reports from serious gastronauts are consistently full of praise. Our last three visits were magnificent … and look out for their Azpilicueta (Rioja), Crianza 2009 – a delight. Early in October the seventh edition of the prestigious gastronomic event ` Millesime Madrid ‘ took place at the `Pabellón de la Pipa de la casa de Camp’ in Madrid. This event is the most important in the field of Spanish haute cuisine. This year BonAmb’s 28-year old chef Alberto Ferruz received the honourable invitation to attend. ..... We have little doubt that a Michelin award cannot be far away ? ONDARA : * Restaurante CASA PEPA (Ondara): With a Michelin star, the writer’s other favourite restaurant (I will accept an invitation at any time). NOW OPEN ALL YEAR AROUND : Restaurante AL SANTUARIO : Jávea’s one-time half-hidden summer treasure has re-opened. This was announced in June with some fanfare. We went 3 times and have to report our disappointment. These visits produced the conclusion that the great success of the former Al Santuario, under its owner Marie-José, was due to the fact that it was a labour-of-love; the customers adored the restaurant, its wonderful cuisine and M-J herself ! Under new management, this is now an “excellent” restaurant but with a different concept – my steaks were superb – but the old Santuario it is not. In a way this reminds me of the old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – but we do hope this restaurant will settle down and find its own style especially as the location is such a delight !! Off the summit of the Jávea/Denia mountain road, take the right turn towards the Cabo San Antonio - 2km on left, opposite the monastery. The courtyard remains delightful, the tables and chairs are less well furbished. T96 636 8017 : 7/7 evenings only. FAMILY RESTAURANTS / GOOD & RELIABLE (Euros 20 - 35 per head)

Snippets Some scandals are beginning to arise around Calatrava’s buildings including the Valencia opera house. An interesting look at the other side of the City of Arts and Sciences (Valencia) from the New York Times - with thanks to John Deacon for passing on the link

Royal Naval Association, Costa Blanca North. Lord Nelson died on October 21, 1805 at the age of 47 and his death at the Battle of Trafalgar is marked every year by a commemorative Dinner. Ours took place on Friday 8th October at Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort. This year the Dinner was hosted by telecoms whizz Sandra Wake whose last RN posting was at the War House. Sandra also has the distinction of being the first WRNS to serve in the Falkland Islands. The Dinner is a traditional event with the reading of Nelson`s Prayer, toasts to the royal families of Spain and the United Kingdom, a toast to The Immortal Memory and Ceremonial Sunset. Everyone was warmly welcomed at this two hundred year old ceremony and after a splendid dinner, the port circulated the table clockwise, as normal. To find out more about the Royal Naval Association, Costa Blanca North, their regular monthly meetings and to get news about special events like the Trafalgar Night please contact haydn.gunningham@gmail.com

By SUZANNE DALEY - VALENCIA, Spain — For a while, this sprawling Mediterranean city embraced Santiago Calatrava’s architecture with gusto. In a dried-up riverbed, Mr. Calatrava built and built, eventually filling 86 acres with his radical, and some say awe-inspiring, designs. At the City of Arts and Sciences, a huge project by Santiago Calatrava in Valencia, Spain, work is under way to fix problems that have cropped up since the project was built. In Bilbao, Spain, a Calatrava footbridge paved with glass tiles now has a dark carpet because so many pedestrians slipped and fell. But these days, even as Mr. Calatrava’s eye-catching PATH station creeps toward completion in Lower Manhattan, he is often cast as a villain here in Valencia. One local politician runs a Web site called Calatravatelaclava, which loosely translates as, “Calatrava bleeds you dry.” Originally budgeted at 300 million euros (about $405 million), the riverbed complex, called the City of Arts and Sciences — the world’s largest collection of Mr. Calatrava’s work, which includes a performance hall, a bridge, a planetarium, an opera house, a science museum, a covered walkway and acres of reflecting pools — has cost nearly three times that much, money the region never had. Ignacio Blanco, the member of the provincial Parliament who started the Web site, has unleashed a flood of information about the complex during the past year, concluding that Valencia still owes 700 million euros (about $944 million) on it. Admirers say that Mr. Calatrava’s designs are both delicate and powerful. They liken his buildings to giant sculptures and praise his stubborn devotion to form. And they point out that star architects often come with hefty price tags, partly because their designs frequently call for intricate, complicated construction. Almost all have at least one project that seemed to spin horribly out of control — and it is rarely easy to determine exactly who might be at fault and for what. But in numerous interviews, other architects, academics and builders say that Mr. Calatrava is amassing an unusually long list of projects marred by cost overruns, delays and litigation. It is hard to find a Calatrava project that has not been significantly over budget.

The Councillor responsible for overseeing the repairs is Antonio Miragall. Miragall has spent time with the mayor, José Chulvi, supervising the work by a local company. After listening to the report from the contractor, municipal officials have also agreed to an improvement to the Chapel’s access door to keep out rainwater. wider gutters and will be better able to cope if water accumulates. These improvements will involve a municipal investment of about 12,000 euros, Councillor Miragall said that this project will draw from a grant of € 40,000 from the Provincial Council of Alicante which will also help to provide funds for other much needed repairs on municipal properties. In fact, Miragall has sannounced that soon minor repairs will also be made on the ermita de Sant Joan.

The municipal department of the City of Javea Works plans to install up to 21 new scuppers (racks to the storm drains) on Avenida Fontana in Arenal . It is an intervention that aims to improve stormwater drainage, as this road faces serious flooding in heavy rains. At the moment are only nine access points to the drainage system, an amount which has proved insufficient in the past. In August, the councillor for Works, Paco Torres, and the mayor, José Chulvi, met with the residents of this street, and discussed the serious problems they face every time it rains hard, with flooded basements and cellars. Municipal officials pledged to find a solution to the availability of funding. In the meantime they contracted a thorough cleaning of the entire sewer network in this area, removing the gravel, sand and roots that obstructed and prevented good drainage. Now, starting by the beginning of December, work will begin to install new scuppers . This is a set of 21 drains 100 by 50 centimeters, attached to the tube network of 135 linear feet and 350 millimeters in diameter. The estimate for this work which will triple the drainage budget of 19,000 euros. It will not be necessary to stop traffic on this road while work is being carried out as it will be mostly within the parking areas.

ART CENTRE ASSOCIATION, JAVEA The aim of the Art Centre is to encourage both beginners and experienced artists alike, by offering tuition in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary arts and crafts. There is an occasional newsletter, and an ‘Antiques Road Show’ for charity each year. Membership is €5 per year from September to September. Members are welcome to use the Art Centre as a meeting point. The Art Centre is in a quiet country house not too far away from ‘Inn On The Green’ bowling club and near Las Laderas Urbanization. Part of the house has been remodelled with extra windows, special lighting and central heating for the two studios, reception area and coffee lounge. WIFI is available and free. There is easy parking and wheelchairs are welcome. Lorely and Glyn Griffiths have retired after more than 35 years working around the World. Glyn had previously been involved in telecommunications (now promoted to car park attendant and janitor for the Art Centre ! ! ) This will be the 4th Art Association Lorely will be running. She started the first Design College in Nairobi more than 30 years ago and finally was looking after the Art Society in Dubai for many years. Subjects usually available are: - Painting in Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Pastel, Drawing, Mixed Media, Portraiture, Creative Textiles, and Porcelain Restoration. All of the subjects are available for absolute beginners or for those more advanced. Although the Art Centre is a non-profit association, there will be a flat charge of 20 Euros per 3-hour session, whatever the subject, this pays the teachers and covers the overheads. Also everyone is welcome to arrive early and leave late or come for a coffee any morning. Usually groups will meet (3hrs per session) once a week, in the mornings, 10am to 1pm which includes free tea, coffee & ‘choccy bikkies’ at any time ! ! We will always welcome enthusiastic and experienced people to teach any existing or new subject. Those who would like to attend could add their names to the subject “Wish List” and in that way everyone can be tied in together. It is advisable to pencil your names in to secure a place. Didn’t you always say when you had time, you would learn to paint ! ! In addition the Art Centre Association has studio/meeting rooms available for ANY group or club who want somewhere to meet on a ‘one off’ or regular basis or, who just want to come along and make a mess ! ! Fully equipped studios with tables, comfortable chairs, easels, good lighting, projector screen, paper roll, white spirit, art & antiques reference library, car park, central heating, wheelchair access, coffee lounge, ‘choccy bikkies’ and as much tea/coffee/softies as you can drink (but bring your own wine ! !). All of the above included free for €5 per head per morning or afternoon session. As this is a non-profit association, if the meeting is cancelled you don’t have to pay. Come and visit the Art Centre, (we can E-mail or post you a map) or for more details please contact Chairwoman: Lorely Griffiths on Javea 966 47 20 49. E-mail: artcentrejavea@yahoo.com
