Welcome to the the Jávea Grapevine Magazine After an extra long Summer break it is really good to be back. I hope that your season has been entertaining and successful. Mine has been a tad fraught. After a successful (and I hope final) operation in June and some time after spent recovering, I persuaded my mother that we should drive to the UK and back. We had a great time visiting friends and family, saying goodbye to the house that has just sold there and started to potter back through France. We were still short of Paris when there was a loud bang under the car - something must have flown up underneath. At some point, over a glass of wine, I will doubtless regale you all with a blow by blow account of our exciting trip, unless mother beats me to it with her new blog on www.maijottings.com. On returning, our internet was worse than ever before, with speeds of less than 400Kb it was like a return to 1999 - couldn’t even upload a 100kb photo, so it was a magazine-free fortnight until two days ago - so pleased that we have now moved to a new provider. So that is my news. if you have news to share, why not contact me.

Hello Grapevine friends, The summer is coming to an end and everything in our town is beginning to return to normal. I have had the opportunity to speak with many businesses and all agree that the 2015 summer season was the best in recent years. Not only because many more tourists visited Xàbia, but also the spending per tourist has increased, which directly affects the economy of Xàbia and job creation. At the municipal level, the activity has not stopped, in addition to the day to day work; we have had a busy schedule of meetings with other towns in the Marina Alta to reach important agreements for our town. In particular, we reached a very interesting agreement with Pedreguer to bring water to Xàbia and guarantee our supply for many years to come.
José Chulvi, Mayor of Jávea
My agenda has not changed and I have had meetings with citizens, associations, tourists, received the visits of Mayors and Councillors from other towns; and I continue with my work as a provincial member of parliament in the Alicante Provincial Government (Diputación). Furthermore now I’m also the spokesman for the Socialist group in the Diputación; this means additional work, but is something I do gladly, and it always ends up being positive for Xàbia too.
Multiplying the population in the summer means multiplying the problems, but I can proudly say that the new municipal team has functioned perfectly. The summer always seems to be a litmus test to see how our services work, and with everyone’s effort we have passed this period with flying colours.
But how lucky I am to live in our beloved town, as in addition to working, I can enjoy the sea, the landscapes, my friends and of course my family. I used some of my free time enjoying sea excursions by jet-ski or boat.
September arrived and with it, the Port fiestas, I invited you to enjoy them and above all was delighted to announce that the firework display would be held this year. In order to do so, we rented platforms to be located in the sea and from them our famous display was launched. September also marked the return to school of the children of our town, and for these important early days, I want to be with them, so I am visiting our schools to give encouragement to the pupils and wish them luck in the year ahead. Un abrazo Your Mayor JosĂŠ Chulvi
Javea Town Hall has renewed its collaboration agreement with APASA the AsociaciĂłn Protectora de Animales San Antonio who take on the diffucult task of collecting stray dogs in the city, keeping them in kennels and also woeking with local police when a loose dangerous animal is located. The mayor, JosĂŠ Chulvi (pictured together with the Councillor for the Environment, Doris Courcelles, and a representative of the APASA) has authorised the municipal subsidy of 45,800 euros. Apasa has more than a hundred dogs in their facilities, all fed, vaccinated and chipped ready in the event that someone is willing to adopt them. The association, in addition to the municipal contribution raises its finances through events, volunteers and donations.
Pulpa
Female Shelter since 22.11.2012 Podenco DOB 15.11.2008 54 cm
Pulpa is another podenco that was just tied to our gate. She is a nice medium sized dog that was probably used for the hunting only. She was afraid of people and in the first days it was difficult to touch her but now that she is more familiar with her new environment we can better approach her. Pulpa is a strong girl which now lives in a group and starts to enjoy her life again. She will be a very nice dog when given time, patience and attention and she will overcome her bad experience in the past. Pulpa is waiting for her chance to be cuddled and adopted.
Claudio
male, Shelter since 13.09.2011 Crossbreed, DOB 15.01.2011 50 cm We do not know much about Claudio but when he came inside he was very fat. We found him in a busy street with the iron collar still attached. He must have been kept on a chain a lot and he got fat due to lack of exercise. But Claudio is an energetic young dog and he lost weight now that he is playing with other dogs here in the shelter. He has a good character but since his owner did not teach him anything, there is still a lot he has to be taught.
Lario
male, Shelter since 08.10.2010 Cross Breed, DOB 28.08.2010 – 52 cm
Lario came to APASA as a small puppy but he is still with us now. Why? We really do not know because he is really a caring dog and very kind. Since he grew up at APASA he is very well integrated into his group and loves all the other dogs. The only thing he needs to learn is how he has to behave in a house but we are quite sure that he will be easy going as he likes to please people and he is also keen on learning. .
Tomata
female, Shelter since 03.04.2008 Rottweiler, DOB. approx. April 2004 64 cm She arrived at APASA as a real Rottweiler: acting viciously. But now we know that she is just a big baby and very sweet. TOMATA is very keen on balls and very social too. She walks on the lead perfectly and, -who would have thought?-, likes everybody. Are you looking for a large, but reliable and friendly `girl´? TOMATA could be your friend forever!

Montgó Residents receive tips to improve security

Valencia calls for ‘as many refugees as possible’
Xàbia refurbishes schools for the coming school year
Valencia has called for president Mariano Rajoy’s cabinet in Madrid to agree to take on far more refugees from the wartorn Middle East than the 2,000 he has proposed to date, saying if every town in the eastern federal community housed one family, this alone would cover more than 1,000. If each of the Comunidad Valenciana’s 550 towns and villages took in just one Syrian family, Rajoy’s proposed 2,000 would be comfortably covered – and Spain has 16 other autonomously-governed communities, meaning the country could accommodate 34,000 refugees without noticing and at very little extra cost.
The Town Hall has spent €65,000 on repairing and refurbishing the town’s public schools so they are fit for the 3282 students enrolled for classes next year. Repairs include painting, cleaning, a bathroom for the disabled, changed doors, leak repairs etc. In addition, the local police and Education department have got together to finalise safe routes for children to walk or bike to school, instead of taking the car, and technical details to deal with parking and traffic changes at school opening and closing times. From Press release.
Xàbia’s Dept of Economic Development announced a new season of free language courses taught through Creama thanks to the collaboration of foreigners living in Javea. After the success achieved in previous English and German courses, and in response to demand, this year they want to offer French classes. Creama needs more volunteers to act as teachers. There is already a team to deliver the basic level, but they need more teachers to expand the course to higher levels. From October morning classes will extend until March covering over 100 hours. Contact the Creama Office in the Helpdesk Office
Neighbourhood councillors launched Xàbia Town Hall councillors have been assigned responsibility for different areas of the town, allowing them to have a better perspective and understanding of the strengths and problems. To facilitate contact with the public, the five councillors will have an email address to which residents can forward any concerns, complaints or suggestions relating to their area. In addition, the councillors will create a schedule of appointments to which all those interested can attend.

Xàbia opens first dog park The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has opened the municipality’s first dog park it is located in the district of Pou Moro next to the Gorgos river. It is a large green area of some 3,700 square metres with bins, bag dispensers for owners to clear up after their dogs and furniture such as benches allowing owners to relax or read whilst their pets run, play and exercise. 1. When you wash your hair, it is the scalp that needs washing, so massage your scalp with your fingertips and your hair will be washed without matting up, or losing the shine. Each hair is covered with tiny scales that need to lie flat to be shiny. 2. If the labels on clothes irritate the back of your neck, remove them and replace with a few backstitches in a bright colour so that you can tell the back from the front. 3. Summer was the time to remove all the winter black mould from the walls, on a dry day, you can still leave the windows open while you treat with a mixture of half household bleach and water. Take proper safety precautions. 4. To remove all the cream from a small carton, unfold all the corners that make the box shape. Cut straight accross the top and squeeze the box totally flat. 5. FIRST NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE CONFERENCE IN MURCIA The PAES National Animal Welfare Conference is being held at the Costa Narejos Hotel, Los Alcázares, Murcia 16-18 October 2015 and is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain. Three animal welfare organisations from Murcia and Almeria: ACTIN, San Animal and Cruz Azul, are collaborating on the PAES (Protección Animales España) Project which is creating great initiatives and programmes, including the National Animal Welfare Conference. The conference is aimed at those who would like to learn more about running their own Trap, Neuter and Return campaigns; volunteers involved in shelters, sanctuaries, rescue groups and foster pet parents, as well as anyone who loves animals and wants to get involved. Delegates will be able to learn about the lifesaving changes taking place across the country and the organisers are confident that they will take those ideas back to pets in shelters, and with rescue groups, in their home towns.
“Our mission is to bring together as many people as we can who are involved in animal welfare in Spain, to encourage co-operation and exchange of ideas” said Lyn Baines, Conference Manager. “We will be launching the PAES Project at the conference and we have some exceptional speakers on various topics.” The best-of-the-best experts converge at the PAES National Animal Welfare Conference to share their ideas and expertise: leaders of the no-kill movement, experts in animal care and behaviour, marketing and fundraising experts, professionals from private and public animal welfare organisations, and more. Topics will include: Animal Welfare Law, European Microchip Database, Compassion Fatigue & Compassion for Rescuers, Knowing Your Boundaries & Keeping Safe Education in Schools and/ or Canine Assisted Therapy, Animal Behaviour, Galgos & Podencos in Spain, Animal Fellows & Zooplus, World Veterinary Service & Trap, Neuter, Return, TNR of Cats – The Spanish Experience Creating & Managing Cat Colonies, Communicating Your Cause/Marketing & PR Tips. “We have speakers from all over Europe who will share
their expertise and experiences with our delegates” commented Lyn. “We know how hard it is running an animal welfare charity, so we have kept the registration donations as low as possible, so that we can engage as many people as possible.” You can find out more about the conference itinerary and how to register by visiting their website: www.proteccionanimales.es or by emailing conf@proteccionanimales.es PAES (Protección Animales España) is a project that has been developed by the ACTIN Association (Charity Number G30866925) with the aim of bringing together associations, protectoras, animalistas, government, authorities and professionals or companies interested in animal welfare so that, by working together, we can make a real difference in improving the welfare and treatment of animals in Spain. Our aim is to provide a Legal Group, Veterinarian Group and, eventually, our own Rescue Centre, to co-ordinate fostering with the various local rescue charities. This will enable us to monitor dogs and pass them as fit, before they are released to foster homes and, eventually, their forever homes.

Audrey was a volunteer for The Original Charity Shop and Library for more than 23 years and worked as cashier on Wednesdays and Saturdays until just a few weeks ago. She was born in London and grew up and worked in various parts of England before coming to Spain. During the war she was a driver and she also did some modelling before deciding on the restaurant business. She spent 14 years on the island of Lanzarote where she ran two restaurants (even entertaining Omar Sharif on one occasion), before settling in Javea where she ran the El Horno restaurant until she retired. Rest in Peace Audrey and thank you from staff and customers for the hard work put in over the years, we will all miss you very much. Thank you for your support, gracias por su apoyo. Nadal: “The privatization of health by the PP has, for years, caused a lot of suffering and concerns for the citizens of La Marina Alta” September 10, 2015 Deputy Compromís Leader, Josep Nadal, presented a request for documentation to prove “breaches of contract specification for Marine Health with the Government that are behaving years a lot of suffering and concerns the citizens of La Marina Alta “. As reported, workers and Platform for Public Health Health Marina refuses to move patients in the centre HACLE Pedrera as they have to pay for each patient moved. Orba, For example Vicent Oliver, whose family has complained to the hospital for them wanting to discharge without referral to La Pedrera occur. Vincent is totally dependent after a heart attack and does not even recognise his family. Nadal added “We show our solidarity with Vincent and his family and we have asked all the information on the number of patients referred to La Pedrera from Marina Health and from other hospitals in the Valencian health system.” Nadal has also requested information on “the ordeal that many users have experienced this summer Marina
Salud”. Compromís want to know the average waiting times in the emergency department, and what the hospital has taken steps to address the proliferation of the Tourist population of Marina Alta and Baja during the summer. “We want to know also how the hospital has solved the lack of radiologists reported by the platform. What has been the average waiting time to receive results of TACs and resonances in the last three months.
Compromís requests documentation on breaches in Marina Health Services
We are interested in the difference between the number of SIPs issued by the hospital and the number of registered voters in the Marina Alta. Because as unions denounce Platform hospital charged for each SIP and suspected fraud would be doing by increasing the number of SIP by not withdrawing the SIPs Temporary visitors “. According to Nadal, “all this hellish situation well known to the citizens of La Marina only be solved by reversing the management towards a fully public hospital. The PP has marketed health of citizens to promote their friendly companies and the new government must review breaches of the specifications of the contract to enforce the reversal as before.“ Phone: 669 906 572

Reflexive Verbs
The first reflexive verb we usually use is llamarse- to call oneself / to be called. So we’re already fairly familiar with the concept.
DOING IT TO YOURSELF!
LLAMARSE
(Yo) (Tú)
(Él/Ella)
pronoun Me Te Se
conjugated verb llamo llamas llama
(Nosotros/as) (Vosotros/as)
Nos Os
llamamos llamáis
(Ellos/Ella)
Se
llaman
I call myself You call yourself He/she calls him/ herself We call ourselves You all call yourselves They call themselves
In use, the ‘se’ at the end of the full form of the verb is taken off & moved around to the beginning & then changed to ‘fit’ the person – & the rest of the verb is then conjugated in the usual way. ¿Cómo te llamas? = What do you call yourself? Me llamo Carlos. = I call myself Carlos These verbs are only used when talking about someone doing something to themselves. Take the verb LAVAR. That would be used when discussing washing something – a car for instance: Lavas el coche – you wash the car. You would use LAVARSE when describing someone washing themselves, or part of their body.
Lynn Cobb
Te lavas las manos – you wash your hands.
If the phrase contains only the conjugated verb, the pronoun has to move to the beginning, as shown in the table. However, if there is more than one verb, the pronoun an either be literally stuck to the end of the full form of a verb, or a gerund (ING), or moved to the beginning before the conjugated verb. Using DUCHARSE (to shower oneself) Estará duchandose más tarde, Jorge. / Se estará duchando más tarde, Jorge Jorge will be showering (himself) later Both are grammatically correct, & neither is habitually used more than the other.
Using DESPERTARSE (to wake oneself) No queremos despertarnos tan temprano mañana / No nos queremos despertar tan temprano mañana We don’t want to wake (ourselves) so early tomorrow If we don’t use the reflexive verb, it isn’t clear as to whom we don’t want to wake!
Using PINTARSE (to paint oneself) Se habían pintado las uñas y los labios en color rojo antes de salir, las chicas. The girls had painted their nails & lips red, before going out.
The pronoun, se, has to go before the conjugated verb in this case, because neither the infinitive nor the gerund is used. Also note that we don’t need to use possessives in the Spanish version, because the use of the reflexive verb makes it clear that they painted their own nails & lips!
Using PROBARSE (to try something on oneself) ¿Te vas a probar el vestido antes de comprarlo? Ana / ¿Vas a probarte el vestido antes de comprarlo? Ana Are you going to try on the dress before buying it Ana?
Using QUITARSE (To remove something from oneself) Hay que quitarse la ropa antes de bañarse One should undress before bathing
Using CEPILLARSE (to brush oneself) ¿Os habéis cepillado los dientes? Luis y Jorge Have you brushed your teeth, Luis & Jorge?
Some verbs change subtly when they are used reflexively. DORMIR (to sleep) & DORMIRSE (to fall asleep). Me dormí muy temprano anoche & dormí diez horas. I fell asleep very early last night & I slept ten hours.
There Other verbs change meaning completely, such as ABRIR (To open) & ABRIRSE (To open oneself/confide ) – although when you think about it, it’s logical! Por favor, no abres la puerta, tengo que abrirme a ti Please, don’t open the door, I have to confide in you
There are of course many more reflexive verbs – some of which can be found on my website, under the ‘grammar’ category. http://learn-aprender.com/groups/welcome/

ARENAL BEACH BREAKFASTS / COFFEE BARS & BAKERIES BREAKFAST at Jávea’s Arenal beach: For those looking for a breakfast of some quality on the sea front – especially what is known as a “Full English” - we recommend the Champagne Bar and Black Beluga. Also the newly opened < ROMANTICA > in the alleys behind Humpty Dumpty. AND not fogetting the Parador buffet especially on Sundays ? NEW FRENCH BAKERY & BRASSERIE “LA BAGUETTE de FRANCE” : Recently opened top quality bakery / coffee bar / tea room & fully licensed restaurant with fine Bordeaux wines under Anglo-French owners and management. Pierre comes from a baking - milling family with over 200 years tradition behind them in the Dordogne. Brasserie offering traditional French meals (coq au vin, cassoulet, boeuf bourguignon). Almost opp. Austriaco. Extensive range of superb bread / croissants / snacks etc. 96 647 0432 / Open 08:00-20:00h daily. contact@labaguettedefrance. com Consumers / lovers of quality
bread should note Our new bread, Mie’Nutie, is a bread entirely prepared with durum wheat and is hydrated at 100%. This is the reason why one can enjoy its perfect flavour and texture 48 hours after purchasing it. Come enjoy this marvel developed by the “La Toulousaine des Farines” and the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA). Among its numerous advantages: Facilitates intestinal transit / Stimulates the heart and your organism generally / Lowers cholesterol / Reduces the risk of cancer (natural fibres) / Naturally rich in oligoelements / Gives one a feeling of satiety! https://fr-fr.

LE PARISIEN (Horno y pasteleria artesanal) : Next to Deutsche Bank (and/or opposite Humpty Dumpty & Chez Angel) at Jávea’s Arenal: French coffee bar with superb bakery & patisserie – everything here is to be praised. Bread good (but not up to the standards of the Saladar Supermarket !). Stylish and clean and delicious snacks. Loud & horrible muzak (best to sit outside). Open 08:30h – 19:00h (Sundays till 14:00h). 96 579.1466 / www.elparisien.com

EASTERN RESTAURANTS (Jávea) : INDIAN RESTAURANTS N.B. NEPALESE ESTAURANTS
Being largely ignorant of Indian cuisine we have wondered why these next three restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and two are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. We can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence and the reputation of Northern Indian cuisine ! Go and try!
Restaurante BUDDHA PALACE : Arenal - opposite former Banca March & tennis club. Always a most enjoyable experience and the “bush telegraph” tells us that this is the place to go! 96 579 2894 buddhapalace1@gmail.com / Open: tlj Restaurante GURKHA PALACE: Av. Jaime 1, No.8 in Jávea Port. Fine food with good ambience. Take away service. Menus del dia : €9.50 & €11.99 A la carte €20-30. Tel: 96 579. 3331 / f. Tues.midday. Rte EVEREST SPICE (prev. Riu Rau) (Costa Nova): Another Nepalese restaurant with charming décor; top of road up from Saladar to Costa Nova Panorama just after hairpin bend on the road towards La Guardia and Granadella (just after the closed kindergarten).

Pleasant atmosphere & beautiful gardens. Good reports but slow service - although their take-away service is highly recommended). Tel : 96 577.0230 /

Restaurante TAJ MAHAL : Has returned to its former position overlooking the large car park at Jávea’s Arenal beach after a refurbishment. Was formerly recommended – we hope it’ll be so again ! f. Tues midday. Comments welcome. 96 647.1684
TAPINDO (& “Take-Away”) : In the last row of shops on the right side as you leave Arenal shopping area towards Mercadona. Produces excellent Indonesian food (especially Bami Goreng & Nasi Goreng). All sorts of combinations can be served to take home although there are facilities for eating on their terrace. Ideal for the hungry! 96 646.4191 / f.Sun.
Bar/Rete LAS OLAS: HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria PLA48) ? Well, go and discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids ! WARNING Our recent visit was very disappointing - we need reports please. 96 577.0175

Restaurante: WOK BUFFET at the Barclays roundabout. Very good for families and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for €9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. A bit of a “canteen” ambience but this is a great quality “fill-up” if you are hungry and feeding hordes of kids. Tel : 96 579.7016 / daily 12-24h. Restaurante (the 5-star) BENI ASIA***** !! : On right side of the Cumbre del Sol road which leads off Benitachell high street (left at traffic lights just after Mas-yMas). This is regarded by very many (including your writer) as the best Chinese restaurant in the whole area, lead by the charming
Rte AMARRE 152 (Jávea): literally “Mooring 152”, tranquil situation by the bobbing boats at the very head of the mooring creek that goes inland from the Parador. Menus del dia €18 & 20 (fish). New reports reaching us have not been too good. First impressions were not up to the same standard as their excellent restaurant but we hope has settled by now ? We await further comments, please.
AND A NEW TIP OFF : For an excellent FISH & CHIPS try THE INN on the GREEN (Bowling Club on the Jávea - Benitachell road) !!

Rte LA CANTINA DE JAVEA : Situated right in front of the fishing fleet in Jávea’s port (on the ground floor right around the back – left side - of the one storey building by the fishing boats). Clientele is very Spanish. They are often very busy so you must go early (say 12:30h). Very good prices. Their fish menus consist of the catches of the day. They are serving all day long (even after the cinema). 96 579 2190 / open tlj : 7/7. Rte SUR: ...at the beautiful Granadella creek (down off the Cabo de la Nao and the No.1 beach of the Marina Alta); certainly the best fish restaurant in Jávea (they own their own boat and sometimes have an extraordinary variety!). Our absolute favourite for fish and a beautiful location. Sensational puds ! Highly rated (7½/10) in Spain’s Gastronomía Guide. Best to book. 96 577.1612 July/Aug daily 10-23h / otherwise open lunch only (closed mid-Dec - end Feb).www. restaurantesur.com/ FISH ITEM (retail)! Of all the modern phenomena, the most monstrous and ominous, the most manifestly rotting with disease, the most grimly prophetic of destruction, the most clearly and unmistakenly inspired by evil spirits, the most instantly and awfully overshadowed by the wrath of heaven, the most near to madness and moral chaos, the most vivid with devilry and despair, is the practice of having to listen to music while eating a meal in a restaurant.
