Welcome
In the online Grapevine, this month at
www.javeagrapevine.com
Online Features More Local News with photos Welcome to the new format for Jávea’s longest running English Magazine. We have come a long way in the 25 plus years since the magazine was first started as a parish newsletter. Just prior to their retirement, having owned the Grapevine since 2007, Derek and Sue le Breton put the magazine wholly online two years ago. It was a brave and bold step. I have really enjoyed managing and editing the magazine online, since I took it over in May 2013. The heady freedom to develop the magazine as an online, photo and video rich “Glossy” magazine has been very exciting. I am even more excited now, to see part of it back in print.

José Chulvi Mayor of Jávea Once again we begin a new year, and for me it is always a pleasure to communicate with you from the pages of the Grapevine.
José Chulvi
Dear Friends, January was a busy month, much work, meetings, fiestas and cultural events that I will summarize. After finishing the old year surrounded by my family and friends, on January 5th business resumed at the Town Hall with a meeting with the municipal collector, to arrange an extension until January 16th for citizens to register for the payment of their taxes, so that more people would be eligible for the maximum discount. That same day I had the honour of welcoming the three Kings from the East, who visit Xàbia every year to leave gifts for the little ones and for those who are not so little. I spent that night with my family and it appears that I must have behaved well last year, because the King Melchior left me plenty of gifts.
Jávea Grapevine February 2015|
During the month I had around 100 entries in my diary, working committees and plenary sessions at the Alicante Provincial Government, and Xàbia Town Hall.
I would like to highlight one of the main issues occupying me during the month, which was the attempted privatisation of the Cabo San Antonio lighthouse. All my efforts were intensified on this matter, and on 14th January I travelled to Madrid to meet with the President of the Ports Authority to communicate to him in person the unanimous rejection by all political parties in Xàbia to the installation of a hotel within the lighthouse area.
| JĂĄvea Grapevine February 2015
I am grateful to so many people who have supported me on this issue, sending me messages of encouragement and helping me a great deal. My proposal is that the Cabo San Antonio lighthouse should become an Interpretation Centre for the Marine Reserve, and also a visitor’s reception centre for the Montgo Natural Park, incorporating a tourist information desk; in other words, an area for both citizens and visitors to enjoy. On the 24th of the month I chaired the National Committee of my party, the PSOE, in which we set out the proposals that we plan to carry out at a regional level. Last week I spent three days in Madrid, to promote our town at FITUR, one of the most important international tourist fairs in the world.

I never want to stop being close to all our citizens, this month we had the sad news, regarding the disappearance of Sean Lonegan, a resident whose body was found by police after days of intensive searching. I attended the funeral of Sean, and saw how well remembered he was, by both his family and friends; he was a great person, and I would like to express my sincere condolences to his wife, family and friends. But I also enjoyed a happy moment, visiting Yolande, a Swiss resident who turned 90 years of age, and who has spent over 30 years in Xàbia. We have also arrived at an important year, a year when local elections will take place, elections in which with great enthusiasm, I will again present my candidature as Mayor. My sincere wish is to continue for four more years working for my town and its citizens, always being there to help. To this end, I will work hard with all those who want to join me in this new way of governing Xàbia which we began in 2011, opening the doors of our town hall, and governing with transparency, integrity and honesty; and having a constant and fluid contact with all the citizens of our town. I think we’ve shown a good example, that there is another way of working and running a town. Be in touch soon. Best wishes from your Mayor, José http://josechulvi.com

Xabia wins Award The Department of Industry and Economy yesterday presented the awards to the agencies of Commercial Innovation of the Comunitat Valenciana, the offices that are responsible for the commercial management and support to entrepreneurs. The initiative ‘Comercio Emprende’ was aimed at boosting the success of the venture in the commercial sector, the minister, Maximum Buch, handed these awards and one of them was awarded to the Department of Business and Sports in Xabia, that was placed among the top ten of the Comunitat Valenciana in Place NO 7 .This is quite an achievement for the department directed by Juan Luis Cardona. Do I Really Have To Exchange / Renew My Eu Driving Licence?
There has been a lot of discussion on various expat forums & Facebook groups over the past few weeks about whether or not you have to exchange your UK / EU Driving Licence for a Spanish one. This has largely been fuelled by English language newspapers with headlines stating that ‘Many thousands of expats MUST change their licences by January 2015 or face heavy fines.’ Despite the headline that EU residents living here for 2 years or more have to change their licences immediately, the press release then goes on to clarify that this only applies to certain categories of licences. Those who need to renew licences are the following, if they have lived here since January 19th 2013 or before & within 2 years of residency for those arriving since that date: •

It’s worth mentioning that although you will, at the end of this process, have a full Spanish / EU licence, rather than one issued by the country in which you took your driving test. You are not technically exchanging it - you are renewing it, because under the DGT rules it is out of date. News From Agenda 21
Compiled by Christine Betterton - Jones Follow Agenda 21 on agenda21-xabia.wikidot.com
Oil exploration in the Gulf of Valencia - a stay of execution? Cairn Energy - the company which, in the face of local opposition, was promoting a project to carry out soundings for oil deposits in the Gulf of Valencia has closed its offices in Madrid..without even leaving a forwarding address. See: Oil prospecting controversy for background. According to company sources the closure of this branch on December 31st is due to “reorganisation”. The Ministry of the Environment has not yet published its report, but the “Dirección General de Sostenibilidad de la Costa y del Mar” - a part of the Ministry, recently concluded that: “the negative potential effect on the marine fauna present in the area is of sufficient magnitude to discourage development of the project. “ From : El Pais Ed’s note: According to online sources, Cairn Energy, which is big in the North Sea, is focusing its activities off the coast of West Africa, and it has been laying off workers. Spain cuts university degrees to three years and extends master’s courses to two Spain’s government has approved a new law which will reduce the length of time it takes to study for a university degree to three years, instead of the usual four to six. Master’s degrees will now take up to two years, compared to just one or sometimes even six months. Education minister José Ignacio Wert says reducing undergraduate degrees in line with much of the rest of Europe, including the UK, will cut costs for families by a total of €150 million a year. The four-year undergraduate degree and one-year master’s system in Spain is ‘very rare in Europe’, Wert insists, only shared by Cyprus, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhistan, Russia and Ukraine. By changing the system in Spain, UK graduates and higher
degree holders may find it easier to get their qualifications recognised, since until now a British degree was shorter than a Spanish one and was rarely given the full credit by the Spanish education authorities. In contrast, a master’s in Spain has always been considered weaker in other northern European countries, because it involves much less study time and rarely includes a dissertation. For full story see: ThinkSpain. Sun, sea, sand… what about the shopping? “Spain has a major image deficit as a shopping destination,” said Angela Castano of Turespana, a body promoting Spain’s brand, at this week’s Fitur world tourism fair in Madrid. Shopping is an essential part of a holiday for a growing number of tourists, according to a report last year by the Madrid-based organisation (UNWTO). That trend is being driven by growing hordes of visitors from emerging markets such as China, Russia and, in Spain’s case, from Latin America. Chinese visitors spend as much as 900 euros each in Spain. But in Paris, the average Chinese tourist spends 1,500 euros on a visit. Spanish shops are making an effort to catch up with the tourists, said Pedro Vargas, head of international projects for the Forum of Renowned Spanish Brands, a business lobby. Spain’s best-known chain department store, the Corte Ingles, now mounts displays in English and reimburses sales tax to non-residents. It has also broadened the range of foods for sale in its delicatessen, to compete with the likes of Selfridges food hall in London. For full story see: The local.es Xàbia uses calendar sales to reforest two areas of La Plana Xàbia Town hall has used proceeds of a calendar sold through the Tourist department to plant indigenous trees in two areas affected by last summer’s forest fire.
The trees chosen are wild species found locally such as oak, juniper, wild olive, strawberry and carob trees. Pines are conspicuous by their absence. The idea behind the planting is to minimise the impact of the fire on the landscape and encourage the regeneration of a fire resistant woodland. The two areas planted are near the lookout on the Cabo de San Antonio, and a gully in the Camí de la Cova Tallada where terrace walls were also repaired. The work was done by the specialist Serveis Medioambientals de la Marina Alta with input from the town’s forestry brigade (set up under the Social employment programme). XAD: Climate change to hit Júcar water resources A study by researchers of the Institute of Water Engineering and Environment of the Polytechnic University of Valencia warns of a possible decline of up to 20% in the water resources of the Júcar river basin over the next 30 years. The study, based on climate scenarios developed by the Spanish Met office (AEMET) predicts extremes of weather with frequent droughts alternating with torrential rainfall, more evaporation due to elevated temperatures and less water seeping into the aquifers. Other effects would be a reduction in water quality and increase in forest fires They propose the development of appropriate water management schemes such as drip irrigation, use of recycled water for irrigation (e.g. of Golf courses), and improved management of dams. From: Iagua.es and Las Provincias print edition. Benitatxell’s Biomoscatell wine presented in Valencia Benitatxell’s Biomoscatell “Moraig” was invited to be tasted at the closing of the 11thth edition of the “Tastavis” quality wine tasting course. This was the second vintage of the dry white wine produced from “ecologically grown” moscatel grapes.
The project was designed to promote traditional culture and the moscatel grape as an identifier of the people as well as to stimulate the economic value of the crop. From Las Provincias Seven tourists before the court for the forest fire in July 2013. Seven tourists, all from the same Irish family are finally before the court for starting a forest fire in July 2013 through the negligent flying of a Chinese lantern. They had admitted culpability, had tried to extinguish the flames and called emergency services. All expressed remorse. From Las Provincias 2013 a Record breaking year for Spanish Tourism. After receiving 60.6 million international tourists, representing an increase of 5.6% over 2012. This placed Spain as the country having received the third most visitors after France and the US. Much of the success was due to the weakness of competitors such as Egypt which lost 18.1% of its tourists due to political instability in the region. The Brits once again topped the list of foreign tourists comprising 23.6% of the total, an increase of 5.2% over 2012, and the number of Nordic and Russian visitors increased markedy. More people are travelling on their own - not using tour packages. El Pais Xàbia is close to the implementation of full e-Government. Xàbia continues to advance the implementation of eGovernment, a system that will allow residents to do a lot of paperwork virtually. The necessary software training for all municipal employees is currently underway and it is estimated that the system will be up for general use by the end of March. Flu epidemic worsened in mid-January. The factor which has truly given the health authority cause for concern is that 63% of the most serious cases have affected patients who are eligible for a free ‘flu jab and have not had one. Everyone aged 65 or over should have an annual influenza vaccination, and the health ministry starts its awareness campaign and orders the required number of doses in September. The aim is not necessarily to reduce the number of cases or prevent those vaccinated from catching the ‘flu, but to ensure that if they do contract the virus, it is far less serious and life-threatening. ThinkSpain Unemployment figures are down in Marina Alta Last year saw a slight fall in the number of unemployed in the Marina Alta with 15,406 people on the dole compared to 16,431 the year before. In Javea there were 202 fewer unemployed in December. Most new jobs were in the Service sector and unions point out that many of these jobs are temporary. Work on re-developing pavements and parking in Avda Jaume I re-started. Work has restarted on the redevelopment of Avenida Jaume I in the port, the first phase of which was completed just before Christmas. The project, budgeted at 110,000 euros, has been widening the pavements, renewing street lighting and reorganising parking along the main access route into the port area to provide a more aesthetically-pleasing first impression as well as improve pedestrian movement. Work is also beginning to finish the interior of the municipal building in Portal del Clot which has been unfinished for some years. The building will be made ready with the installation of service networks and the adaption of facilities for use by the offices of Urban Planning, Works and the local branch of the CREAMA employment initiative as well as a squad of the Policía Local. There will also be a space allocated for the municipal administrative archive. The high atmospheric pressure had caused the lowering of sea levels and the appearance of small islands, many of which effectively tripled the surface area, much to the delight of the endangered Audouin’s gulls who frequent the area, although one took even more advantage of
the extra land by catching and eating a small squid, according to the report from the spotter at Cabo de las Huertas. In total, the data reveals that there were at least 16 marine species spotted during the census, a total of more than 10,000 birds, and at least two of the watch points also had the pleasure of observing bottlenose dolphins, perhaps curious of the activity taking place. Who do you know who is British and lives abroad? The next UK election is the most important in a generation - and it’s vital that everyone who can vote in UK General Elections helps to secure a better future for Britain. Over 5 million British people live abroad, virtually none are registered to vote - despite the fact it’s now really simple to do online. In fact, it only takes 5 minutes to sign up for a postal vote. You can register as an overseas voter for up to 15 years after leaving the UK, as long as: You’re a British citizen and you were registered to vote in the UK within the previous 15 years (or, in some cases, if you were too young to have registered when you left the UK). Why not think of three people you know who live abroad and encourage them to vote by sending them this message and sending them this link:
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Remember, as a UK Citizen resident in Spain, it is important to vote in the Local Municipal Elections in Spain but you are not permitted to vote in the main Spanish National Government Elections, your only National vote is in the UK and then only if you have lived abroad less than 15 years so don’t lose it USE IT. If you prefer to send your registration by post, printed UK Voter Registration forms are available from the Portal Clot Information Office from Tuesday 10th February 2015, courtesy of JCA, Javea.

Currently within EMAUS Altea, as well as the eight Children’s Shelters, there is a counselling service for families with difficult children; a Shelter for the victims of domestic violence and their children’; the ‘baby’ shelter for new born up to six years which specialises in working with the Generalitat’s adoption scheme; the shelter in Relleu for disabled young adults. EMAUS Altea also run a Residencia for older people. An emergency help-line for the elderly living on their own and an occupational workshops for teenagers was closed last year due to lack of funding. “Friends of the Children of Emaús” is a registered charity started ten years ago by a group of friends in Calpe who got together to form a registered, non-profit making Association (registration G-54138805) to raise additional funds exclusively for the Children
within the various EMAUS houses. The Association was founded by, and is still led, by Carole Saunders. It is the only registered association who fund raise solely for the Children cared for by Emaús. EMAÚS Altea has a contract to run the Association with the Generalitat of Valencia. This is paid every two months but is never enough. The rest has to come from charitable donation and yet EMAUS as an organisation do no charitable fundraising themselves; they rely very much on the efforts of local organisations; some wonderful fundraisers who spread themselves about and also support several other charities throughout the year here on the Costa Blanca. The exception is Friends of the Children of Emaús (FCEmaus) who do nothing but fundraise just for the 100 children in the 0 to 18 age group.

The History of EMAÙS
The first Emmaus Community was founded in Paris in 1949 by Father Henri-Antoine Groues, better known as the Abbé Pierre, a Catholic priest, MP and former member of the French Resistance during the Second World War. As an MP, he had fought to provide homes for those who lived on the streets of Paris.
Thirty six years ago, in 1979, Francisco Nadal founded the first EMAÚS Association in Spain at Altea, having been inspired by the work of Abbé Piérre in France. Francisco Nadal came back to Altea from France with a group of homeless teenagers and renovated his Family’s old Finca for them to live in. From a small workshop, helping teenage children with problems, EMAÚS has grown into a large Registered Charitable Organisation that now has several branches across the Costa Blanca area dealing with, and co-ordinating, problems concerning families, their children and their elderly relatives.

One night, a man called Georges was brought to the Abbé Pierre. Georges had been released after 20 years in prison, only to find his family unable to cope with his reappearance. Homeless and despairing, he had tried to commit suicide in the Seine. The Abbé Pierre did not just offer him a place to sleep, he asked for his help. He told Georges of the homeless mothers who came to him for help for them and their children and how he could not cope with the problem on his own. Could Georges join him in his mission to help them? Georges became the first Emmaus Companion, living with the Abbé Pierre and helping him to build temporary homes for those in need, first in the priest’s own garden, then wherever land could be bought or scrounged. He later said; “Whatever else he might have given me - money, home, somewhere to work - I’d have still tried to kill myself again. What I was missing, and what he offered, was something to live for.” Abbé Pierre’s philosophy spread around the world, to-date encompassing 36 countries.
At present EMAÚS are running 9 Children’s Shelters on the Costa Blanca which have around 100 children living in them with an age group ranging from 2 to 18. There is also a shelter for disabled young people, two Residencias for the Third Age, and an emergency help-line in Altea for the elderly living on their own; occupational workshops for the teenage children; a counselling service for families with problematic children; and a Shelter for women who have come out of violent relationship. In November 2008 EMAÚS opened a new ‘baby’ shelter for new born up to six years which specialises in working with the Generalitat’s adoption scheme. The Association is very protective of the children’s privacy, as they are children given them to protect and care for by Social Services. The Shelters are run as Family Units enabling the children to live in a Family atmosphere. They have at least five people working at each house, who are qualified Social Workers specialising in various fields such as, Sociology or teaching special needs.

JGV Review of the latest George Thomas Book ‘The Deadly Diplomat’
When I thought about doing Book Reviews again in the Grapevine Magazine, I decided that I should always express my real feelings about the books I chose, good or bad. I was a little uncertain how I would cope with a book that sounded like a reverse Bond with a Spetsnatz undercover agent wreaking havoc in the Middle East. I needn’t have worried - this is a solid thriller with believable characters and a good storyline. I remember the Middle East in the 1980s (when this book is set). The tension and political undercurrents make the real and well researched history a very interesting backdrop to the adventure. OK - this is an espionage thriller set in the 1980’s, but it is inspired by many actual events in Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Ethiopia, the plot weaves the political tension of the day into an gripping thriller. Posing as a Soviet Cultural Attaché, Alexei Guliyev carries out a series of Black Ops. For those unfamiliar with the term - Wikipedia advises that “A black operation or black op is a covert operation by a government, a government agency, or a military organisation. Key features of a black operation are that it is clandestine, it has negative overtones, and it is not attributable to the organisation carrying it out. The main difference between a black operation and one that is merely clandestine is that a black operation involves a significant degree of deception, to conceal who is behind it or to make it appear that some other entity is responsible” (“false flag” operations). In other words, as an undercover Spetsnaz officer,
Alexei defintely does quite a lot of havoc wreaking wherever he’s posted in the Middle East. Playing against the CIA, the French and any other world power that tries to intervene, Alexei still finds time to deal with personal vendettas, manipulating them into his larger plans like a true master. Even though, like many books published these days, there are odd typos, these are not irritating because the flow of the book is so fast, the reader barely falters before being absorbed in the next twist of the plot. What makes it particularly interesting is that this is a prequel to George’s other successful books - Nemesis in Spain and Nemesis in Asia. Both Nemesis books feature Alexei in later life, after he retires from Spetsnaz as he continues a life of intrigue, death and destruction. So, no-one needs to worry about reading this book out of sequence - because it is technically the beginning why Alexei is driven in later life to behave as ruthlessly as he does... This is the sort of book I will be happy to recommend to my adult sons who will enjoy both the pace and the plot of the book. It is a book intended to appeal to fans of the Bond genre - it is certainly full of action - but I think, with its more rounded and believable characters, it will also appeal to the le Carré generation of readers - especially with its well researched geography and historically accurate political allusions. The video preview, below, is a taster. http://youtu.be/_gcgCSBMcGc To see more books by George you can check out his website www.georgejthomas.com

Asphalting Update
The Asphalting & the redevelopment of Jávea that started with Calle Vicenza continues in the second week in February
Amjasa has replaced pipe sections in some of the streets to be paved The councillor for Works in Javea, Paco Torres, has reported that February begins the two major public works that were awarded during the December and which have had the Health and Safety Risk Assessments both agreed and approved. The first project ‘Calle Vicenza’ involved the demolition of Villa Sarita, an old house in a state of neglect which was acquired by the town. The other plan started in Mid February is laying asphalt on 15 to 20,000 metres of streets that cover various developments and major roads such as the Avenida Juan Carlos I.
Prior to paving, municipal water company, Amjasa, is making minor works to replace hooks or small sections of pipes in the streets which will be paved to minimise problems in the future, added the Mayor, José Chulvi. For example, in the Montgo area, a total of 20 separate projects are being undertaken by local Jávea businesses now registered in the Register of Providers at Amjasa. Another project being addressed is the repair of the Triana bridge. The intent is to replace the bridge with a new and safer construction. A draft is being submitted to the departamento ministerial de Costas to incorporate their suggested implementation reports.

Released on the Youtube and Vimeo channels of the producer and on the public & private project sponsors. Target: Both Spanish and English speaking members of the public (particularly the British) interested in travel and Mediterranean lifestyle. Story line: Young Londoner, Jane takes an unexpected and life changing trip to the Mediterranean Jane travels from London into the hills of the Marina Alta region, with great expectations from the estate of her late aunt Susan. However, the estate isn’t money - it actually is a property and Wintersun comes with a heap of complications, not helped by Jane’s attitude to everyone she meets. Sento, Reme, Roig, the Mestre and Cathy are part her aunt’s past - but the question is will they become part of hers - or can she sell up and get out fast?.
Premise behind the series: There are several movies and series that have become good examples of branded content associated with a territory. All are comedies whose premise is: someone travels to a place against their will and achieved success after a traumatic induction into local mores. Notable examples: El chiringuito de Pepe (2014) used to promote Peñíscola and supported by the Provincial Government of Castelló; Doctor Mateo (2009) promoting Asturias; Primos (2011) for Comillas, Cantabria; Entre Copas aka Sideways (2004) for California; the sister movies Bienvenidos al norte (2008) and y Bienvenidos al sur (2010) that nor only saw an increase in Tourism of 200%, but also became blockbusters in their own right. financing Wintersun had a budget of 50,000 euros for the first season, which was met by both public & private
sponsors as well as individual patrons through the crowfunding campaign. Public Sponsors: • City Council of Javea • AMJASA (Municipal Water Jávea) • Town Hall of Dénia • City Council Benissa • City Council Parcent • City Council d’Ondara • City Council Calp • Mancomunitat cultural de la Marina Alta • Mancomunitat Vall de Pop Private Sponsors: • Beers Damm • Pons Chemical • Association of Restaurateurs of Jávea • Different businesses in the tourism fabric of Marina Alta: wineries, restaurants, malls, active tourism, etc ...
“Aims - The Wintersun series aims to present the district of Marina Alta attractive to tourism. We want to demonstrate, through a good story fiction, that we are much more than sun and sand. We support eight municipalities (including those of the major tourist powers in the region: Denia, Javea, Calpe and Teulada-Moraira) and companies like Beer Damm. We also have the support of Balearia, which allows us not only to connect the Marina Alta with the Balearic Islands in our history, but also have its broadcast networks and with their boats as emission point of the series. One point in favour of the project is precisely this total involvement of the public sector and private with the series. Marina Alta has decided to participate in it and for us represents the opportunity to demonstrate that cultural industries can support the productive sector for our Region and become a real support in creating opportunities. Applying a real branded content strategy works for a company or placing a product for an entire region. Wintersun - The title refers to what happens outside of the summer months. During July & August Marina Alta receives almost two million tourists, mainly British and Spanish. But what about the rest of the year? We are ready to prove that the extraordinary still happens after September 15, when the last low cost plane has departed and things resume their usual pace. Wintersun was recorded in Castilian, Valencian and English as one of its objectives is to reach the British public. Our region is already a prestigious international destination (43% of its 200,000 inhabitants are foreigners with a preponderance of British), but we / you can still do more and, above all, to
do better. The cast includes experience actors from the world of television, theatre and film - well known to the Valencian public. The technical team of more than 30 people, has brought together top professionals and teams. From the district of Marina Alta more than 200 people were involved in the production, including extras and volunteers. At the moment the team has recorded a first season of 5 episodes that will air on www.soldeinvierno.net and www.thewintersun.co.uk as well as channels of Youtube and Vimeo and Social media Already tsteps have been taken to secure funding to record another Wintersun season. We believe that our goals are only feasible if the project is kept fresh. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ajho1gHieP8 https://www.youtube.com/user/ soldeinviernomarina/videos http://www.soldeinvierno.net/ https://www.facebook.com/soldeinviernolamarina https://twitter.com/soldeinvierno1 Marina Alta See that puntita protruding east on the peninsula? Yes, that is right in front of Ibiza and Formentera ... then there’s the Marina Alta. It is a region of the Costa Blanca consists of 33 communities, among which are some of the most important tourist enclaves in Valencia: Javea, Denia, Moraira and Calpe. It has a coastline of over 70 kilometers which combines sandy beaches with cliffs and coves, some as

great as the beach Granadella elected as best beach in Spain for two consecutive years.
Its mountainous profile is defined by the lines of the valleys: Gallinera, Ebo, Laguar and Pop, and Bèrnia tops, Segària or Montgo. Its natural scenery such as the Barranc de l’Infern is well known to hikers. Inland areas are dotted with small white villages in peaks and valleys in which maintain a traditional way of living and doing things. La Marina Alta works as a perfect unity of tourism to discover a Mediterranean but remains the same as ever, which fascinated the first generations of tourists and marked its character. The economy of the Marina Alta is based on tourism and associated service sector. It is important gastronomic tradition: fish kettles, rice, sausages, “coques” vegetable season, sweet almond, pumpkin or carob liquor mountain herbs, oils, honey, wines with their own D.O. including mistela. Sociologically the presence of foreign residents is essential, since they form 46% of the 200,000 inhabitants of the region. Of these, 84% are European; Despite the strength of the Russian and Scandinavian markets, the bulk - in number and spending - still the British. Its location is another plus, since it is the natural point of connection to the Baleares through the port of Denia. Moreover, it is less than an hour from the Alicante & Valencia airports. The natural boundary of the Marina Alta to the south is Benidorm, one of the most important tourist icons of Spain.”

The Guardian of Secrets An historical family saga spanning four generations, from 1912, Kent, England, to Spain and its 1936–39 civil war. Celia and Ernesto’s two sons march under opposing banners, whilst their daughters take different paths, one to the Catholic Church and the other to the battlefields. In exile, Celia and Ernesto can only wait and pray for their children and their safe return home, ignorant of the re-emergence of an old foe, more dangerous than the bloody war that has engulfed their children.
The Mercy Carver Series Dark Shadows
When unimaginable calamities strike, Mercy Carver, a poor London woman, wonders what she has done to deserve such immeasurable suffering. It is only when she faces imminent death in the snow and ice-encrusted Virginia wilderness that she finally understands the power of destiny.
Blood Moon
The unthinkable has happened. America is embroiled in a Civil War and Virginia has been invaded by a Union army. Mercy Carver ignores the dangers that surround her and treads a precarious road, using only her youthful passion and guile to guide her, and the runaway slaves she continues to aid.

On today’s post we are going to review the reinstallation options for our systems with a clean install of Windows, and we are going to use one of the most celebrated versions of this Operating System: Windows 7.
Easy
computer-talk
•
Here are the steps to follow: 1. Boot the computer from your Windows 7 installation DVD/USB. NOTE: Make sure that the CD/DVD drive is selected first and your HDD second in the boot priority order in your BIOS settings. Usually it is by default.
•
2. If using a DVD, then when prompted, press any key to boot from the installation DVD. NOTE: You will only have about 8 seconds to press this key. If you miss it, you will have to restart the computer. 3. Set up your language preferences, and click on the Next button. 4. Click on the Install Now button to start the installation.
To shrink an existing partition to create another partition to install Windows 7 on instead, select the partition you want shrink and click on the Extend option. Type in how much in MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) that you want to shrink it by. Now select the new extended partition.
•
The 100 MB System Reserved partition is used for the Boot Manager code, BCD (Boot Configuration Database), System Recovery Options (Windows RE), and start up files for BitLocker (if turned on). •
5. Check the ‘I accept the license terms’ box, and click on Next. 6. Click on the Custom (advanced) option. 7. Select the hard drive or partition that you want to install Windows 7 on, and click on the Drive Options (advanced) link. 8. Select a hard drive or partition that you want to do a clean install of Windows 7 on, do what Drive options (advanced) you want if any, and click on the Next button when finished. Drive options (advanced)
If you have more than one partition for a disk # (hard drive) and want to get rid of them to make that disk # one partition drive again, then select a partition with that disk # and click on the Delete option for each partition with the same disk # until there is only one “unallocated space” with that disk # left as in the screenshot below.
•
If you want to have the 100 MB System Reserved partition in addition to the Windows 7 C: partition on a HDD or SSD after installation, then you would need to make sure that all partitions on the drive have been deleted until it is only unallocated space. Next, select the unallocated drive to install Windows 7 on. If there are no partitions on the disk, you will get the 100 MB System Reserved. If you do not want to have the 100 MB System Reserved partition and only the Windows 7 C: partition on a HDD or SSD after installation, then select a formatted partition or drive to install Windows 7 on.

If there are any partitions on the disk, you won’t get the 100 MB System Reserved.

installation of will now begin.
10. After the final restart, you will see a black screen for a moment. 11. Type in any user name that you want for your default administrator account and any computer name, then click on the Next button. 12. If you want to protect your system, type in a password you want for your default administrator account. Type it in again to confirm it, then type in a hint for your password. Click on the Next button. 13. 7

Windows number.
14. Uncheck the Automatically activate Windows when I’m online box, then click on the Next button. You can activate Windows 7 later after you make sure it is running properly. If you chose to automatically activate Windows 7 online when you set up your computer, automatic activation begins trying to activate your copy of Windows three days after you log on for the first time. 15. Click on Use recommended settings to allow automatic Windows Updates and proper security settings. 16. Select your time zone and set your time and date settings, then click on the Next button.
by JPG
17. Click on your computer’s correct network location type location to select it and have the settings for that location automatically applied. 18. Windows 7 will now prepare your desktop to startup.
19. When it’s finished and you are at your desktop, you can now remove or disconnect your installation DVD/USB from step 1 above. 20. Install all of your device drivers, then Windows Updates. 21. Refresh your Windows Experience Index (WEI) score. 22. When finished, all you will need to do is to activate Windows 7. If you are dual booting with another OS (ex: Vista), then that OS partition may not show up in Computer with a driver letter in Windows 7. You will need to add a drive letter to the OS (ex: Vista) partition in Windows 7 Disk Management for it to show up in Computer with a driver letter. You will appreciate living in Spain more… & will know what is happening locally - never miss an event again……. and maybe even become involved!
Studying a new language keeps those cogs turning!! Scientific studies have proven that keeping your brain active as you get older can help stave off dementia & Alzheimer’s disease.
No more nasty surprises when your meal arrives… ...some words are just so similar!!
Know what your children are whispering about ……. no more secrets!! You will be more employable (if you want to be!) even if a second language isn’t a requirement, nowadays it can only be an advantage (especially if you live in Spain!!)
If you’re living in Spain your children will soon learn the language. Do you really want them to be able to speak a language that you can’t?
Jávea Grapevine February 2015|
You can’t argue with this!
You wouldn’t need this……… or at least not quite as often!
some jokes just don’t work in English…….. El director general de un banco se preocupaba por un joven director estrella que después de un periodo de trabajar junto a él, sin parar nunca, ni para almorzar, empieza a ausentarse al mediodía.
Singalong……… actually that’s a pretty good way to practice too!!

No more embarrassing mistakes……. Have you ever told someone that they are boring – when you meant to ask if they were bored?? (And there are oh so many other so much more embarrassing possibilities!! )
It can help you to understand your own language better………… & will make learning the next one easier!!
Learn lots of interesting, strange ……………. & silly sounding words!!
Join a group class & meet new people, make new friends. And then as your Spanish improves, make Spanish friends! Then your Spanish will improve even faster!

Satellite & TV News
The third and final new UK TV satellite was launched late December 2014. No exact date as to when it will be operational, but some expect it to be before summer. Despite what you may have heard, this new satellite should actually improve reception of some Sky pay TV channels, especially those which can be hard to receive around mid afternoon. Satellite dish installations for UK TV in Javea Reception of UK TV by satellite TV in the Javea area has never been better. You no longer need the large 1.8m and 2.4m satellite dishes that have had to be used for the last 10 - 15 years to receive channels like BBC ITV Channel 4 and Five. Now, due to new UK TV satellites, a satellite dish measuring 100x110cm can receive these channels. This sized dish is the very minimum for stable reception. Ideally the larger 125x135cm satellite dish is what we would recommend for the Javea area, as it gives a bit more stability in signal. We have tested other satellite dishes of this size and found the satellite dishes we supply and install to be the best performer for its size, price and build quality. Along with a high performing LNB, and high quality copper coaxial cabling, we ensure our installations use the best equipment for the best signal for your viewing requirements.
Jon Worby
As BBC ITV Channel 4 and Fives are all free to air via satellite, they require no subscription or viewing card to view.
This means that with a Freesat receiver, you can watch the main UK TV channels subscription free. With a Freesat HD receiver, you can also enjoy 11 subscription free HD TV channels, including BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, ITV1HD, and Channel 4HD. As these channels come direct from the broadcasters via satellite, and not via a third party cable, rebroadcast or internet system, you can really use your HD TV to the full with 1080 resolution and Dolby Digital sound. With a Freesat+HD receiver, you can record directly to the built in hard drive, watch one channel whilst recording another, and pause live TV, with no subscription, all through the simple easy to use programme guide. The standard installation of a 125x135cm satellite dish, with a single output high performance LNB, a wall bracket or floor stand and a single cable run can be supplied and installed from 275euros. Add a Freesat HD receiver for 125 euros. Until next time, happy viewing. Apasa was founded 15 yrs ago by a group of Spanish, English and Germans. It started from humble beginnings: a few concrete kennels and no fencing, but over the years it has grown so much and we now have upwards of 200 dogs, we also have quarantine kennels for when new or sick dogs are bought in. We work with the town hall and the police in collecting dogs that have been lost or abandoned. We need the support of our members and all the fundraising events to keep us going. An hour later his brother was found in the same street, looking exactly the same, but brown instead of black. They were so happy to be reunited. Batido is so young that he would adapt quickly to a new situation, family and other pets. He has a lovely character and should be easy to handle.

Tobia
female, Shelter since 03.10.2013 Crossbreed DOB 15.01.2010 41 cm She was found in a private garden where she had tried to hide but after 2 days she was brought to APASA. She is a nice black girl with a white spot on her breast but she was very much afraid of people. She has a good relationship with other dogs but must have had some bad experiences with humans. Here in our shelter she is getting used to them and starts enjoying their attention, cuddles and love. She would be a perfect and faithful dog if she is given the time to familiarise herself with a new situation and the space she needs to run about. With some patience you will have a friend forever.
Patata jumped over a fence then decided to stay in that garden. Too bad the owner of the garden did not approve! So we had to catch Patata and bring her to the shelter. She likes the life here but she needs more attention than she can get at APASA. Because of her love for people she would like to be cuddled all day and this is something we cannot do, because we have so many more dogs to look after.

It is me, I am Drago! He was also disposed of by simply tying him on our fence. When we arrived in the morning we were enthusiastically greeted. Drago is grown up already but in his mind he is still a giant baby. Astonishingly enough he walks well on the lead and has learned a lot. But he still needs and wants to learn more. This would be a task for people who can spare enough time to educate him. He would surely be nice towards children and with a little exercise he will become a very good dog. CHINESE NEW YEAR 19th February 2015 So is it the year of the Goat or Sheep? The Chinese word yáng refers both to goats and sheep, with shānyáng specifically goats and miányáng sheep. In English, the sign may be called either. The interpretation of sheep or goat depends on culture. In Vietnamese, the sign is mui, which is unambiguously goat.In Japan, on the other hand, the sign is hitsuji, sheep;while Koreans also use ram. Wiki

JÁVEA : Restaurante BONAMB : CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 3rd Now an established part of the international gastro-scene in Jávea with its Michelin star – a place that has delighted many. This award confirms that this most important gastronomic investment in Jávea has been recognised by the professionals and – as we have said before - really puts Jávea “on the gastro-map” completing the triangle of world-class restaurants
formed by Quique Dacosta (Denia) and Casa Pepa (Ondara). All reports, especially from serious gastronauts, are consistently full of praise. Restaurante GOLF CLUB (Jávea) : A “Gastro” Golf Club ?! Ask yourselves, please, why was this for so long the best kept secret in Jávea ? Do golfers not eat ? But whatever….. please forget the golf and come here to eat !!! We received several messages praising this restaurant, now under the management of the chef of El Rodat and the former manager of the hotel – José Manuel Pina - and we have now visited it ourselves. The menu-del-dia at €18 is truly astonishing and if this isn’t, for a single example, the most wonderful Gazpacho of all time then you must write and tell us. The à la carte menu is reasonably priced. The view across to Montgó from the muzak-free terrace is sensational. Tel: 96 579 1813 : Mob. 629 828438 / jmxabia@hotmail.es

What a surprise to find this restaurant now so wonderfully refurbished with shaded pool-side bar and eating area, comfortable pool-side furniture and, within, an elegant airconditioned dining room. During their recent visit the Southampton
Uni Symphony Orch. spent the whole afternoon here and all spoke very highly of how well they’d been looked after. If you, or your relatives, do not have a swimming pool here is a place to have lunch and spend the afternoon (with the grandchildren ?). LE PARISIEN (Horno y pasteleria artesanal) : Next to Deutsche Bank (and/or opposite Humpty Dumpty & Chez Angel) at Jávea’s Arenal: French coffee bar with superb bakery & patisserie – everything here is to be praised. Bread good (but not up to the standards of the Saladar Supermarket !). Stylish and clean and delicious snacks. Loud & horrible muzak (best to sit outside). Open 08:30h – 19:00h (Sundays till 14:00h). 96 579.1466 / www.elparisien.com EASTERN RESTAURANTS (Jávea) : INDIAN RESTAURANTS N.B. NEPALESE RESTAURANTS Being largely ignorant of Indian cuisine we have wondered why these next three restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and two are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. We can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence and the reputation of Northern Indian cuisine ! Go and try them.

CHINESE Restaurante The WOK BUFFET Jávea, at the Barclays roundabout. Very good for families and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for €9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. A bit of a “canteen” ambience but this is a great quality “fill-up” if you are hungry and feeding hordes of kids. Tel : 96 579.7016 / daily 12-24h. Restaurante (the 5-star) BENI ASIA***** !! : On right side of the Cumbre del Sol road which leads off Benitachell high street (left at traffic lights just after Mas-yMas). This is regarded by very many (including your writer) as the best Chinese restaurant in the whole area, lead by the charming owner, Fan-Fan. Visiting residents of Singapore and Hong Kong have strongly confirmed this view. Peking Duck a speciality - of course ! Every dish tastes different and the food is free of MSG. 96 649.4042 / fanfan@beniasia.com BENITACHELL : NEW ENTRY Restaurante ANTIQUARY Avnda. Valencia 1. Italian cuisine. On the “ring” road that goes around the back of the town near the church & cemetery and looking over towards Montgo. Very pleasant atmosphere and their lasagna gave pleasure but salad less so. Well attended on a Sunday. We await further comments. 96 649 3620 www.pizzeriaantiquary.com Bar/Restaurante LAS OLAS : HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ...... why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria PLA48) ? Well,
go and discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front ! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments ? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids ! Clean tables, good service, bi-lingual menu. Two noisy TVs inside but mostly quiet outside. WARNING : Our recent visit was very disappointing - we need reports on this establishment please. 96 577.0175 FISH (from Euros 25.00 per head)

Ultramar 114, Jávea (Cala Blanca). Closes end Sept. for the winter. Restaurante LA CANTINA DE JAVEA : Situated right in front of the fishing fleet in Jávea’s port (on the ground floor right around the back – left side - of the one storey building by the fishing boats).
Clientele is very Spanish. They are often very busy so you must go early (say 12:30h). Very good prices. Their fish menus consist of the catches of the day. They are serving all day long (and even after the cinema). 96 579 2190 / open tlj : 7/7. Restaurante SUR: ...at the beautiful Granadella creek (down off the Cabo de la Nao and the No.1 beach of the Marina Alta); certainly the best fish restaurant in Jávea (they own their own boat and sometimes have an extraordinary variety !). Our absolute favourite for fish and a beautiful location. Sensational puds ! Highly rated (7½/10) in Spain’s Gastronomía Guide. Best to book. 96 577.1612 / July/Aug daily 10-23h / otherwise open lunch only (closed mid-Dec - end Feb). http://www.restaurantesur.com/ Restaurante COVA del MERO Denia : Magnificent fish restaurant on the beach. From Denia harbour take coast road northwards through Las Marinas to the 5km stone, turn right at traffic light (modern sculpture on far left corner), drive to beach, turn left. Menus del dia €16, 20 & 22. Their speciality is Llandete – their very famous “wet” fish dish with potato (to be booked in advance). Must book. Tel : 96 578.4864 / open daily. Restaurante LES FOUGES (fish restaurant and delicatessen & retail fish shop) : Cami Paellero 3, Moraira (drive south from Moraira – on the right side before Pepe la Sal). We think that the re-location and enlargement of this fish shop and restaurant to the coast road just south of Moraira is the most exciting gastro-event of the year; uniquely here is a fish shop attached to a restaurant (or vice versa !). This marvellous French family-run operation offers a huge range of fish and shell fish as well

In a separate room are 6 tanks of lobsters! Also on offer are scallops, fresh haddock, skate, cabillaud/cod, lubina, dorada, oysters, potted shrimps, tarama (French – excellent but stronger than the UK version) and many other sorts of fish and fruits de mer – the range is huge). Sometimes they have whole kippers (often out of stock – Attention, Frank, s’il vous plaît !). Reports are reaching us of poor service and being occasionally under strain. Guests must first choose their meal in the shop. It is then transferred to the kitchens for preparation. They also serve meat and look after veggies !! Restaurante LA TASCA Charming Italian owner – set in an attractive courtyard. Portions tend to be small so this restaurant isn’t cheap (€140 for 4). As it was full we found the service under strain. There is musak but, mercifully, not in the courtyard. The lentil soup was superb. Renowned for meat cooked on an open-grilled fire yet all choices were reasonably priced but were all of cheaper cuts except for the CHULETON (T-bone) at €35/kg and this is the reason for going to La Tasca ! Great crêpes but the Panacotta was tiny and inadequate. Well-heeled clientele. Approaching Jesus Pobre from the Jávea-Gata road take the 2nd left before entering the village and it is on the left corner at the top of this short street. English spoken. Must book.
