Last call for Summer! Last month we confidently packed away our woollies. Then it hailed! Who could believe that we would have so much hail, so fast and so suddenly? However - May is done and June is already begun - so let´s concentrate on the important stuff of Summer and leave Spring worries to next year! Except that work on the Storm Drains in the Arenal has already begun (see my photos in Out and About) and blocked roads to businesses have already caused stress. On the plus side - once the two months´worth of work is finished - the Arenal will be ready to weather seasonal anomallies all the better - which with Blue Flag status to protect, is important to residents and visitors and our economy. Thank you everyone for the very positive feedback we have had for the new website and for the online Grapevine magazine. Our Facebook Group is already over 350 strong, with some really interesting and useful nuggets of topical information flying around - so of you haven´t joined it yet, please do - everyone uses their own names and advertising is restricted to the relevant days - so it is a great place to meet people and make friends online, who live near enough to meet up with, if you want to try one of the restaurants in the magazine. We already have a Welsh Society that started in the group and is now running quiz nights. Did you know we got more readers and impressions than Euroweekly and the RTN online added together for the week our last issue came out !!! Well here we go again - bigger even than the last issue - plus we are trying to work out ways of getting the magazine into other formats. Please keep the feedback coming - good or bad - it all helps make it better :-) Gaile

Dear Grapevine Readers, The Town Hall’s Services Department has now taken delivery of the new cleaning, brushing and scrubbing machine which is already being used for maintaining the Paseo David Ferrer (Arenal), Plaza de la Iglesia and the Plaza de la Constitución. This should ensure that these public areas are maintained to a high standard; nevertheless the cooperation of the public is also requested to keep our beautiful town and beach areas clean.
In addition to this, ten new wooden information panels have been installed by Services on the Passeig David Ferrer in the Arenal which highlight the new regulations for the use of this public area which has recently been renovated. The new regulations have been implemented in response to demands from the public, and consultation with various associations and the police.

that in 2012 AMJASA supplied nearly 7.8 million cubic meters of water, compared to 7.5 million in 2011. He also announced that in 2012, the company sold much more water to other nearby towns, showing an increase of 29% compared to the previous year. My political party, the PSOE, recently hosted a conference at the Parador entitled ‘The Digital Universe: The new means of communication’. The speaker was Señora Milagros del Corral a former Deputy Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO Paris, and former Director General of the National Library of Spain. She gave a fascinating talk about our new virtual society which lives in a digital world. For many people their constant companions are now “i-gossip” and the new “daily bread” of email, websites, blogs, e-commerce, digital libraries, e-learning, social networking, and apps. The ‘Minijocs’ (Mini-Olympics) for participating teams of primary school children in the Marina Alta were held in Dénia on 24th, 25th and 26th May. The teams of young boys and girls from Xàbia were successful in winning a total of three gold, five silver and four bronze medals. This year Xàbia was the only town with teams/ participants entered in every single event which included swimming for the first time. I am pleased to announce that following the AGM of the municipal water company AMJASA the final accounts for 2012 were unanimously approved showing a profit of 707,083 euros, an enhanced result over the previous year which ended with a profit of 138,336 euros. The report confirmed the positive development in the company, which met its targets for the year and has in place plans to improve the network’s performance, contain costs, make energy savings and maximise the management of its assets. During the course of the meeting, the CEO, José Luis Henarejos submitted a report which highlighted the fact

Jávea´s keeps all three Blue Flags Official !!
Congratulations are in order - The Councillor for Tourism, Antonio Miragall, and the mayor of Beaches, our own Doris Courcelles, attended an event organized in Benissa to collect the blue flags that the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has granted beaches Granadella, Arenal and Gravel, for their clean beaches again this year. In addition the Club Nautico has a flag in the ports category. Life guards will be back at the Arenal on June 1st, services at the other beaches start on 15th June. They will remain on duty, during the day, until September 30th - But always check the timetable before swimming! The safest area to swim is the Arenal beach, with its long flat sandy approach, childrens’ play areas and shallow water. However, as we have seen over the last few weeks, the weather is still changeable so please check your sun cream is within its use by date.
Did you know that Sun Protection Factor Numbers halve every 12 to eighteen months as the chemicals degrade over time - even more so when they have been opened. So last year´s sun cream is likely to be half the factor number it says on the outside! However new the sun protection cream is it should also be re-applied every two hours you are in the sun as it loses part of its efficacy as it is absorbed into the skin... Sometimes, when you live here, it is easy to forget :-)

ANOTHER DAY OFF
Midsummer Fires As temperatures begin to climb, it may come as a surprise to some people that Jávea will already be looking to celebrate the middle of summer this month. One of the most anticipated fiestas of the year is the ‘Fogueres de Sant Joan’, festivities which honour the Nativity of St. John the Baptist but have their origins in the great Pagan solstice celebrations marking Midsummer when bonfires were lit to ward off the evil spirits that roamed freely once the sun, having reached its highest point in the sky, began to track back southwards, bringing longer nights and, eventually, the chill of winter.

The modern celebrations of Sant Joan (San Juan in Castellano) stretch back more than 60 years and taking centre stage during the festivities is a special group of local youngsters who turn 18 during the year and are invited by the town hall to form the ‘quintà’. It’s a huge honour to represent the town but not everyone takes up the invitation for it’s an expensive obligation with families expected to find several thousands of euros to support the participation of their son or daughter. Whilst the ‘quintà’ is the central figure of Sant Joan, the peñas are the heart and soul, groups of friends whose sole aim is to enjoy the fiesta together. There are many expats and holidaymakers who consider the fiesta to be solely the fireworks and burning of the huge statues on the night of Sant Joan but there are almost two weeks of celebrations which lead up to this magical night. It all begins with the ‘Proclamación de las Reinas’, the official presentation of the queens, their courts of honour and their escorts, all dressed in traditional costumes, some of which can cost in excess of 2,000 euros.
It’s a long, drawn out affair that’s really only appreciated by proud parents and close friends. The presentation is often followed by a sort of “phoney fiesta” when nothing much happens for a few days until the much-awaited ‘Pregón’ which is the formal announcement of the beginning of the festivities and takes place in front of the town hall in the church square. Rarely on time, the officials appear in the top windows of the town hall building and the announcement is read out: let the festivities begin! If there was ever any event determined to split opinion, it is the bull-running which, despite everything, remains a requisite part of the Spanish fiesta. Jávea’s bull-running is not quite on par with the huge televised spectacle of San Fermin but it is enjoyed by many people not just from the town but from the surrounding town and villages. The event itself might be seen as an unorganised affair and at first it might seem that its people milling about the arena, waving at the animal and then diving to safety inside the cages when it charges. However, in most cases, if you look closely at the hands of some of them, they will be holding small metal rings and their objective will be to get as close to the animal as possible to slide this ring over one of the horns. To do so attracts great applause and further enhances their credibility as a “torero”. As the night of Sant Joan grows ever closer, the festivities begin to lift a gear and become more intense. Peñas often their own parties to which other peñas as well as friends and the occasional unwitting member of the public are invited and these often last well into the night.

There is a whole programme of live music in the main square, mainly provided by a manufactured “orquesta” bands that play all the latest hits to a not always appreciative audience whilst those who appreciate something a little more sedate might go in search of the traditional dancing that takes place in Carrer Nou or marvel at the decorated streets which are competing for prizes.
A slow beat of drums heralds the start of the spectacular as hooded figures begin to creep through the darkness along the edges of the street; keep an eye on them.
The anticipation lifts a further notch until the drums suddenly change beat and the darkness comes alive with explosions of white and yellow as the hooded figures emerge dancing to the infectious rhythm and There is something for everyone during Sant Joan start spraying the happy crowd with hot sparks. By midnight, the square is full to bursting, shrill whistles demanding the start of the explosive light show. A single rocket often gives a short warning that the display is about to begin; the street lights going out means that it is imminent. The theme varies from year to year; in the past the explosions have been choreographed to a medley of movie themes or to heavy rock music. Almost every year a tree catches light and the firemen standing nearby rush into action, dousing the flames the best that they can.
The crowd sweeps into the void that had been previously cordoned off for the firework display, many making for the steps on the northern side of the square which afford the best view of proceedings. At the base of the ‘foguera’, shadowy figures have already begun to pour liberal amounts of flammable liquid over the statue; a long string of firecrackers known as a “traca” lead away from it to the designated ignition point, either just inside the safety fencing or on one of the balconies of the nearby apartment.
As the music reaches the crescendo, the explosions A loud explosion and flames begin to rise through the become more thunderous before an intense burst of light statue, thick black smoke rising into the night sky. usually concludes the show and the huge crowd breaks into applause, appreciative of another great display. The rising intense heat momentarily pushes the crowd back a few metres; firemen using their hoses to keep the inferno As light debris continues to drift out of the night sky, under control occasionally turn them on the spectators attentions switches to the ‘foguera central’ fenced off at closest to the fire, the cool water a blessing against the one end of the square. high temperatures building in the square.
Once everything is deemed to be (reasonably) safe, the ‘quintà’ is allowed forward and they begin to join hands to encircle the blaze. They start walking around the fire, still holding hands, singing and chanting before breaking into a run, jumping over as best they can the powerful jets of water from the fire hoses. They are determined to enjoy the experience; it’s their final act as ‘quintà’ of the year’s festivities. And just in case some of them don’t realise that their reign is coming to an end, there is often much commotion just outside the fencing and kept just about in check by the police is the following year’s ‘quintà’, ready to step into their shoes. As the ‘quintà’ continues to enjoy its final moments as the “headline act” of the Fogueres, the big stage comes alive once again with live music and there are still just a couple of hours more to enjoy the festivities before the ‘Fogueres de Sant Joan de Xàbia’ come to an end for another year.

Doris Courcelles, councillor for “services, environment and beaches” was born in Belgium and studied at a French university. She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 30 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.
No rest for the wicked... Well, in French we say: “Pas de repos pour les braves”! I personally think that you have to be young and healthy to bear the month of June. If you have lived here for a long time, you know that Jávea will be in “fiestas”..... They officially start on the 8th when they present the court of honour, ladies and queens for the 2013 “Fogueres de San Juan”. Until the 24th, you will be able to attend plenty of events. A musical pyrotechnical firework display and the subsequent burning of the “Foguera” (papier mâché statue) on the “Plaza de la Constitution” will close the celebrations.
Mind you, you won’t have time to rest a lot as the “International Festival” will take place at the Via Augusta from the 27th to the 29th June. This is the annual exhibition of the world’s different cultures with musical performances, gastronomy menus etc...... While more than the half of the population will be enjoying themselves, my department won’t be unemployed, as at the same time, we begin the summer season. Have you noticed the new palm trees that we have planted at the “Arenal”? These “washingtonias” should resist the ocean currents.
We also finally got the new machine to clean the “Paseo”. Of course (nothing is perfect!): we notice the sticky chewing-gums a lot more now but it is an improvement. As far as the beaches are concerned, I have good news again this year: we got the three blue flags from the “foundation for environmental education” which rewards us for the quality of the water, the cleaning services, informative posters, rescue etc....
Don’t worry too much! We had a surprised guest this week: a shark was found dead by one of our fishing boats. It is not a dangerous one and it has nothing to do with “jaws”. He might have wanted to join us for the FIESTAS!!!!

June 9th - Marketing the Med to the tourists A number of interesting points came out of the one day conference on Tourism on June 7th - One was that the concept of “The Mediterranean” had a good reputation, for example among the Nordic countries - so much so tha Croatia is using this adjective in its tourism marketing. Secondly: it was better to look at the average expenditure of tourists rather than stats on the numbers of tourists; thirdly, that brands muste be created which survive changes in administrations. The importance of building a brand and applying it was also emphasised. From XAD: Una Jornada....
June 6th - 45 major works building licenses granted in first quarter of 2013 Las Provincias recently published a review of urban development for the first quarter of 2013, revealing that 45 licenses have been granted for major works. A considerable number of these permits were for the construction of new houses, with work starting on two overlooking the isla del Descubridor. The total budget of the work amounts to 3.5 million euros, generating revenues 190,000 euros for the Town Hall coffers. From XAD: Xàbia concedio
June 5th - Sale of municipal land yields June 7th - The graduates caught in a debt trap €300,000 for infrastructure projects This year, the 2,235 graduate and PhD students who took out a loan from the Education Ministry for the 2010-2011 semesters will have to start paying back around 300 euros a month. But in a country with nearly six million unemployed, finding a job is almost a miracle, and that’s despite the fact that these university students long ago gave up on finding work in line with their level of education. Right now they would gladly accept a job as a waiter, a supermarket cashier, a telephone operator… anything. For full story see: El País in English
June 6th - Jávea Park Civic centre becomes focus for general municipal enquiries The new Civic centre (Cívic Punt) in Jávea Park which was established under an EU grant following a University study, has found itself the focus of general municipal enquiries i.e. enquiries in relation to Town planning and Services, rather that just social services issues as was intended. The Social workers at the centre have helped with general enquiries and in some cases, directed questions to the relevant departments. People have also made requests there, such as a for local library, cultural activities at the Arenal, improved street cleaning and garden maintenance and the installation of waste paper bins in Jávea Park Square. The problem of how to develop the square remains a thorny issue. The main problem is that the land is private and the town hall cannot intervene although it has bye laws it can use. People have said that it should be made into a proper plaza, where children can play, and people can sit - this is a long standing request . From XAD: Jávea Park pide...
The auction of a plot of land in the Portitixol area raised €300,000 second time round (the first auction was declared void). The reserve price for this 1147 square metres of prime building plot was €285777. This includes expansion and rehabilitation of pavements in the Port, improvement of a section of the Via Augusta, creation of a park in the plot which used to house the now demolished Guardia Civil barracks, the illumination of windmills on la Plana and the further restoration of the Granadella Castle ruins. She now lives in kennel together with a group of other dogs and she is having in lot of fun there. Santa is very bright and she is always ready for a good joke. She is always the first one when it comes to exploring new things and she has absolutely no fear. She should therefore have a new owner who has some experience in educating dogs.
She is one of four puppies, which were born here in our shelter. Their mother is a mastin cross and a very nice dog and excellent mother. Giovanni is as pretty a boy as his brother and he shows the same preferences as his brother. He too likes people and he is also fond of being touched. He would now be ready for an adoption in a nice family where he could grow up to become a good dog.
ESTHER, female, Shelter since 18.03.2013 Mastiff-Mix, DOB 25.01.2013 – Puppy (Main Picture Opposite) She is one of three puppies which were found in the Arenal. After a few days in the shelter they went to a foster home where they got acquainted with people and were given the possibility to adapt to a new environment. But they have all grown very quickly and we had to house them in the shelter again. Esther´s character is a mix between the ones of her sisters. She is a bit timid, but also lively at times. If she is in the mood, she would approach you and ask for your attention but if not, she also likes to do things on her own. This nice girl is also ready for a start in a new life with some exercise in a good family. A.P.A.S.A. Cif: G-53334454 Reg. HOT NEWS & RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH! AL SANTUARIO Jávea’s much loved restaurant reopens on June 21st. This restaurant, with its beautiful, intimate small garden courtyard captured the hearts of many over the years not only for its ambience, charm and service but for the wonderful food that was offered so that it was with great sadness that gastronauts saw it close in 2010. Their Tarta de Cebolla was of world-class ! We hope they can repeat it. We hope the garden will, at least, be muzak-free. Now it is to reopen under the management of a cousin of the owner and we look forward greatly to our first visit and to writing about it next month. Take the road from the summit of the Jávea/Denia road and turn right towards the lighthouse on the Cabo San Antonio. About half way along (2km?) there is a monastery on the right – Al Santuario is directly opposite. We are sure that booking will become essential ! Good parking. Tel: 96 507 6317 or e-mail reservas@alsantuario.es NEWS The PARADOR OF JÁVEA : The good news for Jávea is that a charming new manager (Snra. Nieves Montisi) and a new and superb chef (Sr. Francisco Pagan) are working to bring this hotel back into the community (after a long absence !). JUNE 5th & 6th : THE LAST ENGLISH TEAS at the JÁVEA PARADOR UNTIL SEPTEMBER was on Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th June 2013 at 16:30h – yes, such is their popularity that they now run the teas on two consecutive days ! Bravo… let us celebrate that this has become a well established fixture of Jávea life! Teas will resume on Sept. 4th & 5th. The hotel offers perfectly made tea (incl. Earl Grey) as well as cucumber sandwiches, delicious scones (with clotted cream and red jam) and carrot & walnut cake and a glass of Cava to finish. A delight. Yes, readers .... this is a triumph and all for €10. Because the teas have been so successful it remains essential to book [96 579 0200]. Make up a small group and always book early
PARADOR’s SPECIAL LUNCHTIME OFFER : Their restaurant now offers a truly gastro-nautical treat - and UNTIL THE END OF JUNE - there is a special lunchtime menu-del-día, at €21. The finest “Duero” I have ever tasted was offered here at €3.75 a glass. VERY TOP OF THE CLASS for all true Gastronauts ! JÁVEA : Restaurante BONAMB : Dutch owned, this restaurant (formerly Giardino, at the Tarraula roundabout at the end of Cabanes and the beginning of the Benitachell/ Golf Club Road ) enjoys a sophisticated and comfortable interior and beautifully laid out gardens and terraces. This is the most important gastronomic investment in Jávea - ever - and it really puts Jávea on the map completing the triangle of world-class restaurants formed by Quique Dacosta (Denia) and Casa Pepa (Ondara). I was both charmed and enchanted by my visit. Our visit a month ago, and again last week, were both supremely memorable. Autumn menus : MIDDAY : €24 (Aperitif BonAmb/ two starters/ 4 main courses/ 2-3 desserts + one beverage or glass of red or white house wine. DINNER : The 7-course dinner is € 49.50 and the 9-course dinner is € 70. f.Sunday p.m & Monday. Tel : 96 508 4440 / E-mail: Reservations : reservas@ bonamb.com / Website: http://bonamb.com/index.html A “gastronaut” wrote : very much enjoyed the degustation menu - the ideas, flavours and presentation were exceptional and we were pleasantly surprised by the wine list prices. Also enjoyed an excellent lunch. SPECIAL OFFER JÁVEA : CINEMA JAYAN - special offer (dinner + ticket on Tues - Wed - Thurs at 18:45h for only €14) : The excellent Restaurante LA RENDA is right beside the Cinema Jayan and offers a pre-performance menu del día including your cinema ticket for €14 (which means, on a Tues or a Wed., a meal will cost you €8 !). This newly and beautifully appointed restaurant offers some some serious, adventurous and very creative cuisine. To take up this offer you must book. Tel: 96 579.3763 / f. Bar/Restaurante LAS OLAS : HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria PLA48) ? Well, go discover it for yourselves. Here is, indeed, a real surprise. A huge range of really good, copious tapas far cheaper than the Arenal beach front! The size of the portions means this is perhaps 50% of the cost of the beach establishments? Be careful how much you order - you may not be able to finish. Ideal for hungry kids ! Clean tables, good service, bi-lingual menu. TV inside but mostly quiet outside. Tel: 96 577.0175

Monday these next two restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and both are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. I can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence ! Go and try them.

Oscar Anton From Sue J. from La Guardia (JĂĄvea) Dear Oscar I had a problem that I would like to tell you about, perhaps you could advise me so it does not happen to others. The postal service is really bad in our urbanization and it is very common that we do not receive our mail. In my case I did not receive the Tax Agency’s communications and recently they have seized my bank account in addition to me having to pay a penalty I do not understand and do not know if it is correct. How could receive important notifications elsewhere? Dear Sue, I understand the problem, unfortunately the postal service is not part of the Council´s remit, I have filed many complaints to the central mail offices in Madrid and also to the ombudsman. My advice is that for all important communications you designate the address of your

Edgar B. of Apartments Cala Blanca, (JĂĄvea) . Dear Oscar;
I have two apartments in Jåvea, one I use for rent in summer and monthly rentals and the other where my wife and I live. I received a e.mail from people who are interested in renting my apartment for the summer and they asked for the energy performance certificate. They said they had talked to their lawyer and if I did not have the certificate I was a no legal rental is this true? I have to get an energy certificate? Know what price? Hi Edgar, the energy performance certificate is provided as a buyer’s right, not an obligation for the seller. They cannot fine you for not having the energy certificate. In your case the energy certificate is not required for rentals for vacations, you only have to get it when it comes to long term rentals, when used in normal houses. If the tenant does not want or does not require it, that can be mentioned in the lease and you would not have to contribute to it. The prices depend on the certificate you want to get. One simply to analyze the degree of energy efficiency in your apartment can cost between 80 and 120 euros. If you request a certificate that comes complete with proposals to improve the energy efficiency of your home, that can be more expensive. (For more about the Energy Certificates see the article on Page 40)

ENERGY EFFICIENCY CERTIFICATE - Royal Decree 235/2013, 5th April
Listed below are the main issues that must be considered in relation to the aforementioned Royal Decree: Who does this Royal Decree affect? Property developers, property owners, future buyers and future tenants, as well as public authorities occupying building with a total usable surface area of over 250 sqm, frequently visited by the public. What is the energy efficiency certificate? It is a report that contains information regarding energy characteristics and ratings of a building in part or in whole. The energy efficiency certificate should be presented by the developer or owner of the building to the competent body of the Autonomous Region in building energy certifications, for it to be included into the corresponding records within the national context. Once registered, the owner of the building should hold onto the certificate. Energy efficiency certificates will be available to the competent authorities, whether registered in the Construction Register, if necessary, or held by the owner of the whole or part of the building or the president of the homeowners association. It will be valid for a maximum of 10 years, and must then be renewed, unless the certificate has already been issued due to changes which have previously been made affecting the certification. The attainment of the energy efficiency certificate will grant the right to use the energy efficiency eco-label during the qualifying period. This eco-label should be included in all offers, promotions and publicity, directed towards the sale or lease of the building or unit. All private buildings or units frequently visited by the public, with a surface area equal to or greater than 500 sqm, must obligatorily display the energy efficiency eco-label in a prominent place clearly visible to the public. Buildings occupied by public authorities, frequently visited by the public with a usable surface area over 250 sqm should display said eco-label in a prominent and clearly visible place. In all other cases, the display of the energy efficiency eco-label is voluntary and in accordance with the provisions adopted, to this effect, by the autonomous regions. What properties are excluded from having to obtain the energy efficiency certificate? The following buildings do not need to obtain the energy efficiency certificate: • Buildings and monuments officially protected as part of a World Heritage Site or due to special architectural or historic value. •

The City of Javea has allocated € 300,000 to its projects from selling a plot in Mar Azul
The Grapevine June 2013 | 45 |
The governing body of the City of Javea has today authorised the sale of a parcel of land, to an individual for 300,000 euros plus IVA. According to Councillor for Heritage Miragall Antonio, a 1,147 square metre plot of land, classified as urban, is in the Partial Plan for Mar Azul, near the entrance to Portitxol. The plot went out to auction with a base price of 285,777 euros, and the final buyer offered 300,000 euros. The contractor has 10 days from the auction to make the full payment to close the sale successfully, the money will go entirely into investments to fund ongoing projects, said Miragall. As was reflected in the budget of 2013, the sale of assets will be used to execute some projects voted by the public in participatory budgeting. In particular, it will go to the rehabilitation of pavements in the port area (100,000 euros) and the preparation of a section of the Via Augusta (60,000) and possibly to the empty plot that needs sorting out after demolishing the former barracks of the Civil Guard, which will become a small park area. Selling public land will allow the use of the proceeds to ensure the enhancement of our heritage – such as the windmills that will be illuminated and rehabilitated ($ 40,000) and the ruins of Castle Granadella that is due to receive 18,000 euros for its improvement. Another investment will be devoted to smaller projects such as the refurbishment of school sports zones, in disrepair. This whole battery of investments are already budgeted into the 2013 accounts (which in turn includes the restoration project at Central Cinema / building Surco and others such as the repair of Candelaria House being run by Municipal Heritage) reflect the Council’s commitment to citizen participation, since in all cases these are projects voted on through the forum on participatory budgeting. For this reason it is important that the local government forum is mobilised by as many citizens as possible so that it is truly representative of local need.
NEXT PUBLIC MEETING is JUNE 13 Councilman Cesc Camprubi would like to remind everyone in Jávea that will be another Forum meeting on Thursday, June 13, at 8pm in the Casa de Cultura when the next list of proposed projects will be discussed and submitted to a popular vote. It is open to all Jávea Citizens (but it will mostly be in Spanish).

So, there is cause to link statin use and sleep disturbance. What can we do? The simplest way to find out whether this applies to you is to just stop the statin and see what happens with your sleep pattern. I would take 3 weeks off from statin, at least, to see if and how things change. In these three weeks your cholesterol levels will go up, of course. There is no way around this but the ill effects of three weeks of high cholesterol are not measurable and most likely negligible. If your sleeping improves while you are off simvastatin we know who the culprit is. You could then try to re-introduce simvastatin but at a much lower dose. If your sleeps stays satisfying, then slowly increase the dose and watch yourself. If at any dose of simvastatin your sleeps is disturbed then I suggest you try another drug out of the statin group.
Dear Doctor, I am writing to ask about the medication I take for my cholesterol. It is called simvastatina, I believe it is quite commonly prescribed for high cholesterol as some of my friends take it as well. I know that it can cause muscles to ache but in this respect I am fine. What I find is that I cannot sleep as well as I used to do and I think this started when I began to take the simvastatina. Could that be possible? I am 63 years old and also take medication for high blood pressure. It´s called amlodipino but I have been on that for a long time. Dear Henry from Gata Residencial, Simvastatina belongs to a group of medication ususally referred to as statins and they do indeed have side-effects which can be quite bothersome. Certainly the most common one is the muscular ache you mention. If that ocurrs the treatment quite often has to be changed. Either you try reducing the dose or you choose another preparation out of the same group. Your problem however is disturbed sleep which you associate with taking the statins. It is indeed well known that statins can change the sleep pattern causing patients to wake up earlier. It can also happen that with taking statins you find you are getting more nightmares.
There are differences in their side-effect profiles and another statin might just suit you better. You would have to talk to your doctor about which one to choose. There are alternatives to the statins as a group when lowering cholesterol levels is required. Should it turn out that any statin affects your sleeping then one of the slightly older types of anti-cholesterol drugs would have to be employed. But of course it might be that your simvastatin has got nothing to do with your sleeping at all. There are many other causes for disturbed sleep. If changing the statin does not work you should then make a note of what it was that woke you up. Is it a need to pass water maybe? Is your breathing troubled during the night and is that waking you up? Ask your wife if she can hear your making strange noises during your sleep or if you have recently started snoring or may even be stopping breathing altogether during your sleep.
There is a very long list of possible causes. The first step into any exploration into them would be to listen and observe for any changes to your sleeping habits.

Banking without banks through the networked world by Christine Betterton-Jones. Based on a talk given at the Jávea Computer Club, May 2013
As we all know, banks are in a mess these days. Things are also bad for those of us who use banks. Interest rates for borrowers are high (always assuming you can persuade a bank to lend you money) and rates for savers are so low, they do not even match the rate of inflation. Bank charges seem to appear magically on your statements and exchange rates on foreign currency transactions are not very favourable. But the good news is that there are cheaper alternatives for many banking services and these can be found on-line. The Internet enables people to be connected with many other people who have absolutely nothing in common except money... or the lack of it. International money transfers without banks Take the following scenario: There is a Spanish student studying in a UK university. He needs to get some money from Spain (euros) and convert it into pounds sterling. At the same time there is a retired English pensioner living in Spain. He needs to get some money from the UK (pounds) and convert it into euros. If the student and pensioner use the normal bank transfer system to send their money overseas they may be charged a fee, in addition, banks mark up the exchange rate by 3-6% to their own benefit. However, if the student and pensioner get to know each other, they can cut these costs to almost nothing by doing a swap. They check today’s exchange rate and the student pays euros into the pensioners Spanish bank account, and the pensioner pays the same value of pounds into the student’s UK pounds account. The euros stay in Spain and the pounds stay in the UK. Simple.
This is the idea behind Transferwise (http://transferwise. com/) – a “crowd-sourced currency exchange” set up by the inventors of Skype and Paypal. The company has bank accounts in the countries and currencies they need. This means when customers want to send some money, they pay it to Transferwise at one end, and the company pays it out to the recipient at the other end from a different account, directly in the target currency. The company tries to match payments on one side to payments going the other way (our student and pensioner scenario – a “peer to peer” arrangement). But if there are no matches it simply hands over money from its own coffers. The exchange rate used is the “mid-market” or “spot rate” with no mark-up, and charges are low. If I want to send €1000 from Spain to the UK, Transferwise would save me around €40 at current exchange rates. Too good to be true ? Quite a few Jávea residents use it and it has excellent reviews. Lending without banks A similar arrangement can be used to connect borrowers directly with lenders. It’s called “peer to peer lending” or “crowdfunding.” This is the practice of lending money to unrelated individuals, or “peers,” without going through a traditional financial intermediary such as a bank. Basically the loans are unsecured personal loans. Interest rates are set by the lender, and loans are spread among different borrowers (to reduce risk). Lenders get a much better return than from banks (5% or more), and borrowers also pay less interest than a bank would charge. The US currently leads the world in the volume of crowdfunded transactions, but Europe is catching up with companies
based in UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. (See_http://www. forbes.com/sites/groupthink/2013/04/23/crowdfundingin-europe-the-top-10-peer-to-peer-lenders/). Top UK companies are Zopa, Funding Circle and Ratesetter. Zopa (http://uk.zopa.com/) has been in existence since 2005 and so far has lent £301,854,170. Savers and borrowers who are good with their money are rewarded by receiving lower rate loans and higher interest on savings. So there is an incentive to behave responsibly. The top Spanish company is Comunitae (http://www.comunitae.com/) which is head-quartered in Madrid. Since its 2009 launch its community of lenders has funded €2,181,025 in loans and received €206,601.25 in interest. Peer to peer lending instead of giving to charity

venture capital company – which would take a cut of your profits. However these days you can hold on to 100% of your profits and still raise the money (if your idea is good enough) by posting your project on a crowdfunding site such as Kickstarter. (http://www.kickstarter.com/). Project creators set a funding goal and deadline. If donors like a project, they pledge money to make it happen. Projects must reach their funding goals to receive any money at all. Nevertheless, an impressive 44% of Kickstarter projects, in total more than 40,000, have been funded since its launch in 2009. Money donors don’t receive any profit, but may receive discounts, free samples, free tickets, T-shirts, etc. depending on how much they donate. Some project ideas are so popular they receive many times their stated goal. Unfortunately, Kickstarter is currently open only to US and UK residents. However, Verkami (http:// www.verkami.com/) is a similar Spanish site. At present it is much smaller than Kickstarter, with only 1052 funded projects to date. There are moves in the US to promote “equity crowdfunding.” This is a system which enables donors to receive a cut of the profits. But there are many legal hurdles to overcome first. If the move is successful, we shall be returning to capitalism as it was practised hundreds of years ago; that is, groups of people clubbing together and pooling money to fund projects which are too expensive to carry out independently, the reward being a share of the profits.
We hear all kinds of stories about how charitable aid money sometimes ends up in the wrong hands, how some of it ends up buying fancy 4x4’s for third world dignitaries to drive around in. But there is a better way to help the third world poor – instead of giving, lend small amounts of money for specific projects through a microfinancing organisation. This way you will know where the money is going, what project it will be used for, and better still, it is likely that the money will be repaid. You won’t get a return on your loan, but it can be lent again and again. Forefront in this field of microfinancing is Kiva (http://www. kiva.org/ . There is a site for Spanish speakers on: http:// www.kiva.org/team/spain_team ). Lenders can lend as little as $25, and thus far (since 2005) they have disbursed The future of banks? $429,275,600 in loans with a repayment rate of 98.99% Banks will not go away. It’s very rare to find someone willing to lend for 25 years, but it’s common to find people Venture Capital via crowdfunding who want to borrow for a mortgage for 25 years. The same Say you have a great idea for the design of some jewellery, is true of business borrowings -- five years to pay for some or a gadget, or a computer game, or a stage production, or machinery perhaps. So banks will still be around for long you are a member of a brilliant, but as yet unknown band. term loans. Still, they will have to clean up their act and You need money to get started with your project. Tradi- get competitive if they are not to lose a lot of business to tionally you would apply to a bank for a loan, or specialist the networked world!

Hi all, from Spectrum FM Well, we are into June but still waiting for the Summer, June 23rd is the official start of summer in Spain but we will schedule some real ´summer songs´ this week to help it on its way! We are hosting an official start of Summer party at L´Ancora Tennis Club on Saturday 22nd June (12 noon onward) and I have said I am definitely going in the pool that day so I do hope it warms up pretty soon! Saying that we watched the Javea triathlon in May and had some friends take part, how well they done as the sea decided to give them a real hard time for the start of the race swim, huge waves really ´bashed them up´ on the swim out and sapped all of the contestants of their energy during the 750 meter swim, directly after that they had a 17km bike ride followed by a 6km run, I was exhausted just watching them from the promenade! What a well-organized and great day, it really was a great event to watch and yet again made me feel so lucky to live in Javea. Another fun event for June is the ´It´s a knockout´ competition in aid of EKA and Guardian Angels, again to be held at ´L Ancora Tennis Club.´ Spectrum FM have a team participating and as well as the fun competition itself there are also various stalls available on the day along with a BBQ and of course some great music all day, it is sure to be a great day for everyone, whether taking part or spectating.
Finally on the events front we have some fantastic events arranged throughout this summer including some boat parties with some real special surprises planned, do any of you like Michael Bublé for instance... I did say special didn´t I, this one is going to be rather special, watch this space! Becky Sweetman from AKIRA dog sanctuary has asked for extra help as despite the great work they do all year round, the summer always proves to be very difficult finding homes for the many stranded dogs. If anyone can help in any way (volunteers, donations, events, etc) please contact Becky and ´like´ the AKIRA face book page; AKIRA Dog Sanctuary. One of the things I enjoy most about living in Javea is the great community spirit, there is always so much going on; all sorts of events and some great charity work bringing the people of Javea together on so many occasions, if we at Spectrum FM can help you with any charity event throughout this summer please feel free to email myself with details and we will help with in any way we can. I look forward to writing the July edition and commenting on how hot it is! As always, thanks for listening,

Then you should ask yourself if the size of the screen really matters. You are going to pay more for a 10 or 12-inch screen, so you really need to ask yourself if you need a bigger screen. Is a big screen going to facilitate what you plan to use your tablet device for? On the flip side, is a 7-inch screen going to hinder your use of the device? You must remember that a larger screened device is going to make your tablet device harder to carry around. You may struggle to put a 7-inch device into your coat pocket, so imagine the difficulty you are going to have with a 12-inch wide screen tablet device. The software that it comes with and how it’s configured is an important factor too. If the apps and tools are in the middle of the device’s home screen then it is easier to operate with one hand. This may not seem like such a big deal, but if you are planning to use your tablet a lot then you will find this very important.

Hi Everyone! On previous posts we have been discussing some pros and contras of having a tablet PC, and today we are going to talk about what tips we should find useful if we decide to add one to our list of gadgets. These devices are not cheap, so knowing what can be relevant for the daily use can help to make the correct choice amongst all the offers we can find. It should provide you with short and long-term utilization benefits and it doesn’t end up becoming another gadget to fill your drawers at home. Let’s see some tips about real-world issues revolving around usability, usefulness and practicality, against entering the, at times, complex understanding technical specifications. I would start with the most evident, which should be the ergonomics of the device. With this I mean how does it look and feel when you use it, it is going to spend a lot of time in your hand. Believe me, when you hold it for an hour your wrists, hands and fingers hurt. When you hold it for two hours every day then by Sunday your wrists, hands and fingers are aching. The feel of the device relates to its size. The thicker a device is then the harder it is to hold for long periods. However, you should be aware that the size of your hand plays a very important part in this. Le larger the size of your hand, bigger is the tablet we will feel comfortable with. Then I would look at the weight of the device, as it plays a big part when it comes to tablet use. Being meant to be held on one had for long periods of time whilst the other hand operates the device, so not only you have to hold the device in one hand, but also to resist the force of your other hand pushing upon it. When you are testing a tablet device, ask yourself if you would feel comfortable or not holding its weight for an hour. This is important for usability and for the entertainment value of the tablet. Many people use their tablet device to play games, and the really good ones use up a lot of CPU power. Some tablet devices do not enough RAM and graphics capabilities and/or the CPU processing power to handle these games. The processing power affects your usability by the fact that having your applications stutter and freeze will become very annoying. Ideally, if you set a program a task, you want it completed smoothly and without any problems. A device with little processing power may not be able to hold true to that ideal.
Battery weight and capacity is basic too, being a major contributor to the size and weight of your device. This means that manufacturers have to make a compromise. They lower the battery life in order to make a smaller device, or they install a more sophisticated battery and increase the price of your tablet. If you come across a thin and lightweight device that is economically priced then there is a high probability that battery life and power has been sacrificed. And last, but not least, boot up and re-awaken speed when coming out of standby or sleep mode is also important. The benefit of a mobile device comes through being able to use it quickly. All for now, I hope this brief list of tips can be of some help for those of you that are interested in acquiring a tablet device in the near future. Please find our contact details below; in case you have any questions or queries, we can assure a quick and professional reply. If these queries are of general benefit, we will post the reply on further editions of the Grapevine so they can be for everybody’s benefit. Finally Spring is Over!
Marina Alta Business Club is as busy as ever, with members working up and down the Costas, in Lanzarote and Malawi ! Javea Grapevine Group on Facebook has now over 362 members, all using their personal IDs in the Group, which is brilliant... THANK YOU !!
OK - you are asking yourself - I only have one Facebook account which is my name ( in other words your own Personal ID) - so what is brilliant about that? Well - this is from the Group “Blurb” and may help to explain... The Javea Grapevine group “...is to put the PEOPLE of Jávea & surrounding towns in contact with each other, so all members must be PERSONAL Facebook profiles, & only one per person. However, if you have a business website or Facebook page, you are welcome to advertise it once a week, on the days listed, in the interests of fairness & ease of administration!! And don’t forget, all members can have a free classified entry in Jávea Grapevine online Magazine on www.grapevinespain.com” It has been common practice with Facebook users for years to join as themselves and to join as a business, or club, or hobby as well - so that they can build up a specialised friends list that doesn´t cross over into their personal life. It was considered no different from having a free gmail account for friends and a gmail account for business. This means a lot of very nice and perfectly legal people have ended up with two or three identities on Facebook. The rules always frowned on this - but it was sooooo easy... and no-one ever worried... but three things happened... 1) Facebook has started to tighten up on the rules - but has put a free system in place to help legitimate users convert their accounts into pages - so they don´t lose their “friends and clients” 2) Facebook then started deleting the obvious “unlikely to be a personal name” accounts - which means that if it was a person acting as a business on their own with no shared pages, they lost everything. 3) People with multiple business ventures were joining as multiple users - which is not necessarily bad - but, it encouraged people to misbehave... If someone joins as a business ID they are invisible - a Bar, might, for example have 2 or 3 bartenders “being” the “person” on Facebook so a legit business could simply confuse clients... but an illegal, unregistered business, uninsured and not paying autonomo... could join as multiple people and multiple businesses - they endorse each other developing a personae and friends for each ID. They post comments praising the work they pretend to have done for each other and, before you know where you are, they have built up a circle of trusting clients who pay out money and then get ripped off. If they join as a fake person, they are far more likely to get caught out than as a “product or business” as it will eventually dawn on a Community group that “Julius Sergio Entwhistle” has no photos of himself, no “real” mates and never turns up at community events tho his comments indicate he was there. So you can see the reason why we feel a Community Group should be Transparent wherever it is - including Facebook - and why we are so proud that 362 people so far (and growing) have agreed with us! (Although temperatures were above the national average practically throughout the whole year, the highest temperatures in 2011 were registered at the end of the second ten days in August, reaching the ultimate level of 42.5 in Seville and Badajoz.) En otoño también se produjeron récords insólitos como los 36,5 grados que se registraron en Jerez el 12 de octubre. (Autumn also produced unusual records like the 36.5 degrees recorded in Jerez on the 12th. of October.) DON: ¿Y qué nos dices de la lluvia. (What can you tell us about the rainfall?) CATHY: En cuanto a las lluvias, el año 2011 resultó algo más seco de lo normal en el conjunto de España. (As far as the rainfall is concerned 2011 turned out to be drier than usual throughout Spain.) La precipitación media en España alcanzó los 555 mm que quedó en torno a un 7% por debajo del valor normal. (The average rainfall in Spain reached 555mm which ended up at about 7% below the usual amount.)
Bueno; ya está para hoy. (Well; that’s it for today.) Goodbye everyone until next time Cathy
Cathy has not been very well for a while now we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery

The photo above was taken from the lighthouse viewing area on Cap de Sant Antoni. on the night of the last heavy rain in May. I only had my trusty Canon with me, and the standard lens, but with patience I managed to get this shot that night. The beach shot was taken the same night just next to the siesta bar, shortly after I caught the remnants of a rainbow over the water. you can see that the storm is heading out towards Ibiza by now

In Javea Players’ production of ‘What’s for Pudding’ boring accountant Jack makes a real prat of himself when he tries to be a little less boring.

The Javea Players Extra Night for Summer Show. The all-but sold out Javea Players’ Summer Show –t here are just a few seats left for the Monday night – is to play an extra night. Originally Javea Council were unable to make the Casa de Cultura available for the Thursday evening but now find they are able to do so and the Summer Show will now play the full week from Monday July 1 to Saturday July 6. The Bar Imperial will be serving the theatre-goers with a splendid pre-theatre tapas supper with mixed salad, bread, alloli, dessert and a half bottle of wine in Javea Old Town’s lovely Plaza de Baix at 7pm.After supper they will go into the Casa de Cultura to enjoy two very funny farces by David Tristram; ‘What’s for Pudding?’ and ‘Last Tango in Little Grimley’. In ‘What’s for Pudding?’ Jack, an accountant who, according to his wife, couldn’t do anything interesting if his life depended on it, played by David Garnett, is spending a quiet Saturday night at home bickering with his wife, Mary, played by Carol Saunders. In spite of the hour, it is gone 9.30, the door bell rings and there, on the doorstep, stands their friends, Ted and Maureen, played by Keith and Geraldine Livesey. They stay for a drink or two. Then a late night shopper, Dennis, played by Gerald Joy, arrives looking for a pair of trousers. Very quickly the quite night in turns into something of a hilarious riot. ‘Last Tango in Little Grimley’ tells the story of the desperate efforts the four remaining members of the Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society make to save their society from extinction. Chairman, Gordon, played by Andrew Cleven, a man with a Simon Cowell like eye for making the extra buck, provides the daring rescue plan. He knows that what puts bums on seats are sex and scandal. So, he writes for his society to stage a play with more than sufficient of both to be worthy of an X certificate. And, then the really demoniacally cleaver bit, he makes the purveyors of the sex and the scandal barely disguised local people. Hardly cricket but hilarious fun. The all inclusive price for the evening – two very funny plays, alfresco supper with wine –is 15 euros. To book for the few remaining seats for the Monday night (July1) or for the extra Thursday night (July 4) ring Gerald or Eleanor on 96 647 2876 or email boxofficejp@gmail.com Best regards, The Javea Players

Glen Campbell is an American country music singer, guitarist, television host and actor. During his 50 years in show business, Glen Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and a Double-Platinum album. Of the 74 trips up the country charts, 27 landed in the Top 10. Glen Campbell was born near Delight in Arkansas. He was the seventh son of 12 children. His father was a sharecropper of Scottish descent. He started playing guitar as a child without learning to read music. He credits his uncle Boo for teaching him the guitar. He was 18 years old when he moved to Albuquerque to join his uncle’s band known as Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys. There he also appeared on his uncle’s radio show and then Glen formed his own band, the Western Wranglers. In 1960, Glen moved to Los Angeles to become a session musician and very quickly was in great demand. He was part of a group of studio musicians that became known as “the Wrecking Crew”. During this period he played on recordings by Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, The Monkees, Nancy Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Phil Spector. For eighteen months, Glen Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian Wilson. He also played guitar on the group’s Pet Sounds album, among other recordings. On tour, he played bass guitar and sang falsetto harmonies. But solo hit records were soon on their way and “Gentle on My Mind” was an overnight success. It was followed by the bigger hit “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” later in 1967, and “I Wanna Live” and “Wichita Lineman” in 1968. The 1969 song “True Grit” by composer Elmer Bernstein and lyricist Don Black, and sung by Campbell, who co-starred in the movie, received nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Song and the Golden Globe.
Campbell hosted his own weekly variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour which was hugely successful and hosted major names in music on his show including: the Beatles, David Gates and Bread, the Monkees, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Roger Miller. Campbell’s biggest hits include John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind”, Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “Wichita Lineman” and “Galveston”, Larry Weiss’s and Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” but “Rhinestone Cowboy” was his largest-selling single, initially with over 2 million copies sold. He had a musical partnership for many years with songwriter Jimmy Webb. Campbell made history by winning four Grammys in both country and pop categories in 1967. For “Gentle on My Mind” he received two awards in country & western, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” did the same in pop. Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He is a highly regarded guitarist by his contemporaries and is often overlooked by many who see him as just a Country and Western singer but he is much more than that.
Glen Campbell is a lifetime Republican and performed the National Anthem at the 1980 Republican National Convention and made a number of campaign appearances afterwards.
The Grapevine June 2013 | 67 |
Apparently, Campbell, Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston – three proud Republicans – were close friends. In June 2011, Glen Campbell announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease six months earlier. He had been suffering from short-term memory loss for years. Campbell sang “Rhinestone Cowboy” as a goodbye at the 2012 Grammy Awards. He went on a final “Goodbye Tour”, with three of his children joining him in his backup band; his last show was in November 2012 in Napa, California. Ghost on the Canvas is the final album from Glen Campbell. With beauty, power, heartfelt emotion and deep spirituality, this set of songs traces Campbell’s life, from dirt-poor, tiny-town Arkansas origins to Hollywood triumphs on the pop charts, TV and movies. From days of youthful touring to hobnobbing with Elvis, Sinatra and the ‘Duke’. Stories of drink and drugs addiction and bad choices to a place of personal and spiritual redemption. This album charts the 75 years of a man who has made his mark.

The Teulada concert held at the new Auditorio was a sell out with an audience of 620. The choirs were joined by the DOLCE DIVAS who performed numbers from their extensive repertoire. Charity Request With the latest atrocity which took place in Woolwich last month, we are redoubling our efforts at Jaspas Bar to raise money for Help for Heroes and the British Legion. I thought it would be an idea to ask anyone who advertises their business on Javea Connect on Facebook, or sells and item, or even gets some useful information there to donate a Euro to the cause. We can call it “A Euro for a Hero” :) I would also like to ask for some help from local shops and bars who would be willing to take donations and keep them safe til November, when we could distribute the money collected on Poppy Day. Once we get a few volunteer dropoff points, then we can ask the members to donate a euro (or more if they like). Loraine. Jaspas Bar

The Grapevine June 2013 | 79 |
LAUNCH Friday 21st June, from 7pm until 11:30pm.
Stuart Bennett and Hannah Smith are opening up a new shop in the port of Javea. To be more precise, this shop will reside where the old Xabia Bikes shop existed for over two decades (Avenida Lepanto 21). The shop is named Barquitos. Which in English is roughly translated as “Little Boats”. They will be stocking clothing, home ware, jewellery, accessories, gifts and much more. Being situated in the beautiful port area of Jávea, the shop has a strong nautical style associated with most products, hence the name of the shop. Stuart and Hannah are a young couple and at 27 and 22 it is a big, bold decision to open their own shop doing what they love. They are launching their new business on the evening of Friday 21st June, from 7pm until 11:30pm. and have asked The Grapevine to pass on their invitation to you for you to join them to celebrate. For more details please email info@barquitos.com or call direct on 673 836 600
