Hello everyone. 2014 was a year of many challenges, especially the dreadful fire in September, but we have achieved many of our objectives, improving the infrastructure and completing many projects. Nevertheless Xàbia continues to suffer the implications of the economic crisis, and to the many dedicated volunteers in the Red Cross, Caritas and the all the other charitable organisations in our town, who work so hard to help the poorest families in our community, I would like to convey my warmest thanks and appreciation. This is the last full year of the current administration, with the municipal elections looming in May 2015. However we will face the New Year committed to devoting all our energies and efforts to continuously improve Xàbia for the benefit of our citizens, and make it an even more attractive tourist destination. Many of you will be leaving Xàbia to spend the holidays with family and friends, to those I wish a safe journey and a Happy Christmas. For the residents remaining in Xàbia, I hope you will enjoy Xàbia’s traditional seasonal celebrations. My wife Monica and I wish you a very Merry Christmas, and a healthy, and happy 2015. José

Michelle Hughes from Villa Mia with a small selection of the donations VillaMia’s collection point has been a huge success with donations pouring in for EMAÚS – an organisation running 7 shelters for 98 children from toddlers up to 17 year olds.

EMAÚS also support a Refuge for Abused Women, a Baby Unit and a home for 24 mentally challenged young adults. Working alongside the ´Make A Smile´ Charity the Warriors of EMAUS deliver all donations directly to the homes. VillaMia, located at Javea Auto Sales by the Ferrobox roundabout in Javea, has received several donations from clients including clothes, toys, books, dvds and even an xbox with games. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm it is an easy location to reach with parking.

Michelle Hughes, owner of the agency specialising in long term rentals, said: “The feedback has been great but they are still desperate for more donations such as toiletries, household cleaning products, long life milk, breakfast cereals, baby food and the usual groceries consumed by healthy and growing children. Also, with Christmas just around the corner they would welcome any unopened gifts which can be used as Christmas presents for the children. It is heart

breaking to think some of these children won’t have anything to open at all but the volunteers work hard so they at least have one present on Christmas day.” Although EMAUS is an association funded with grants this is never enough. Each year it needs to find over 30% extra in the form of donations. EMAUS is grateful for the local support and asks Javea people to continue to support this worth-while cause. In William’s working life there were two distinct phases - The Royal Navy and post-The Royal Navy - both roughly equal in time terms at around twenty-two years each. He joined the Fleet Air Arm (a branch of the Royal Navy) as an Artificer Apprentice and left as a Lieutenant A/E (Aircraft Engineer Officer). As well as working hard while in the RN he took advantage of all sports opportunities. His hobbies included golf; squash; competitive grass hockey; am-dram and SCUBA diving. He also flew on every available opportunity, sometimes over long distances in small military jets, and travelled the world occasionally in large aircraft carriers. Later, he qualified as a Ship’s Diving Officer - a fact that is inextricably connected to “Over By Christmas”. Throughout his time in the Fleet Air Arm he developed an urge to be an actor and/or a writer. As he later held a Queen’s commission in the navy - a binding contract from which he could not simply walk away - his aspiration to act professionally had to be more of a desire than an option. However, writing he could do anywhere - and he did: enjoying it whenever possible. Having completed several creative writing correspondence courses (an excellent pastime while off duty at sea) he was ready to submit his first film script when he left the navy in 1971. However, he had a very practical bank manager at the time who persistently pointed out the “hit-andmiss” nature of writing and, in doing so, managed to torpedo William’s hopes to become a writer for the second part of his life. So instead of writing he joined IBM OP Sales in London and was head-hunted a year later by Commercial Metals Ltd. (a futures metal traders on the London Metal Exchange). He joined them as the UK Sales Manager but left after 6 months (still feeling unsettled in ‘Civvy-Street’ after all the excitement of the navy).

He then joined a major life assurance company in London as a salesman and progressed to Branch Manager. He spent eleven years managing branches of several life companies then finally became an Independent Financial Adviser before semi-retiring in 2000. Still playing hockey after leaving the navy, he played for the Wimbledon Hockey Club , he also played squash and continued to enjoy skiing holidays and continued sub-aqua diving for several years and dived on the Mary Rose site when it was first discovered. He took part in other diving expeditions in the Scilly Isles and Channel Isles. The last dive he had was with his children in Turkey, in 1999. Along the way and at personal expense, he spent two years inventing and bringing to the market a new kitchen tool that a large interested company predicted would be a winner that would make him very rich But it wasn’t; and he’s not.

Over By Christmas by William Daysh

Instead, William now spends his time computer-fiddling (mostly graphics & video) and, of course, writing. He took a Guildford University Creative Writing course and has written some articles for technical magazines and had a small collection of short stories published at Authors Online. “Over by Christmas” - It is 1914. As war engulfs the British Empire, Royal Navy gunner, George Royal awaits his next ship in his home port where his best friend has fallen in love with beautiful Carrie, a woman with secrets. When she is attracted to George, she brings the two men into conflict. Britain’s leadership is being severely tested - so the parallel story of a besotted Prime Minister reflects the realities of George’s war. Full of Historical Naval detail with a strong WW1 story line of changing social moralities. You can buy it here:Kindle UK, Kindle Spain, Amazon UK, Amazon Spain, direct from the Publisher

Rounding off 2014 It is difficult to believe that the whole world is not selfish these days... Well, in 2014 I was able to see that generosity is not a “lost” quality. While the fire was destroying “La Plana” and putting in peril the life of the citizens and their properties, we discovered a wonderful chain of solidarity. On the Friday morning I found 147 mails on my server.

by Cllr

Doris Courcelles

A few residents asked me why, in this case, we don’t put the price of the rubbish down and I had to explain them that we already foresee this when we study the yearly budget. I take advantage of this column to remind you that the Town Hall via Cespa is giving a free collection of items service so..... don’t break your back, loading old furnitures in your car & don’t try to find a “secret” place to unload it.

All these people were offering accommodation, pets care, food, cleaning & gardening help etc...

Just dial the 900 102 149 and ask for a collection of your goods. You will be told when the lorry will come to pick them up.

Fortunately, the affected neighbours were able to go back to their homes but we have also been offered support for when the reforestation starts.

The only problem is that the items have to be standing at the entrance of your property as the employees cannot enter private plots.

At the moment, the priorities are given to the cleaning of the burned areas and the reconstruction of the terraces stone walls.

In 2007, when the “Cespa” services Company started its 10 years contract, the slogan was: “entretots Xàbia neta”and that means: “all together for a clean Jávea”.

Another sign of public spirit was the good news which came from “Ecoembes”, the Company which deals with the management of recyclable waste collected from the blue and the yellow containers. We got 58.275 € as an annual bonus (which has to be added to the c.175.000 € we already get per year), a sort of “great efficiency” financial reward.

Let’s think that we are all putting our grain of sand in this project!

Amjasa plans to diversify After finishing the year with €2million in profits, the municipal water company, AMJASA aims to initiate new lines of business covered by its articles of Association. The Council, together with a small group of collaborators, has produced 4proposals to double the turnover of the company: managing public moorings in the port, a bus service, running an environmental centre at the San Antoni Lighthouse and marketing bottled water. This, after assessing that there are no sports or activities to support. From XAD: Amjasa .... Xàbia starts replanting indigenous trees in fire affected area Xàbia Town Hall staff have started to plant indegenous species such as wild olive and kermes oak in areas affected by last September’s wild fire. They have also put up signs asking people to keep away from some areas so that natural regeneration can take place. Burned woodland near the picnic area has been removed and it is now possible to see right accross to the Torre de Gerro and Valencia coast, a view which was previously obscured by the lush pine forest. The owners of private land upon which the ruins of the Ermita de San Antoni and a viewing area is located have put up their own sign asking for people to stick to the paths and thus help natural regeneration. From XAD: Inician.. Move to make the Marine Reserve of the Cap de San Antoni a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Denia Town Hall has strated moves to have the Marine Reserve of the Cap de San Antoni declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. They will need suppoert from Xàbia, the Valencia Generalitat, the Denia Marina and the Central Government before the request can be subitted to UNESCO. The function of these reserves is to preserve and protect biodiversity, as well as the economic and human development of these areas, research, education and the exchange of information among the more than 620 reserves in 117 countries that make up the global network. Spain - A great place to live, a terrible place to work? Spaniards sleep fewer hours and work longer days than their European neighbors, but are less productive. At the same time Spain fails to attract overseas talent, while tens of thousands of well-educated Spanish youngsters are heading abroad in search of work. The country also has one of the EU’s highest school drop-out rates and a work culture hostile to the needs of families with young children. Meanwhile, its birth rate is fast approaching negative as its population ages…. Jaime Malet, head of the US-Spanish Chamber of Commerce, accepts that among the problems Spain faces are widespread nepotism, absenteeism, and fewer incentives to improve productivity, along with a refusal to recognize and reward talent. For full story see: El Pai’s in English Record year for foreign tourists Between January and November this year, more than 61.7 million international tourists visited Spain. That figure is higher than the total for all of 2013, 60.65 million, which is to say that with a month of it still to go, 2014 has already been a record year for tourist visits to the country. The country broke the 60-million barrier for the first time last year – a figure that looked like it would be difficult to beat, given that it was partly due to the weakness of other tourist markets, such as Egypt, which was the victim of political instability during the year. The United Kingdom continues to be the main source of tourist visits to Spain, accounting for a quarter of the total. For full story see: El Pais in English Benefactors A Norwegian family, resident in Xàbia, has donated €1000 to the Town’s Social Services Department through the Association of Women Entrepreneurs (MEJ) to help support a single parent family. The benefactors have made a number of donations over the past few months totalling €4000, asking only that the money is used to support women who have been suffering ill-treatment or a difficult separation. Amjasa ends the year with 1.5 million profit Xàbia’s municipal water company AMJASA will close the year with profits of €1.5 million which will be used to invest in improving the water distribution network. The continued investment in infrastructure has raised the value of the company from 13.5 million to 17.5 million over the last three years. The company is also proposing to set up a citizen’s participatory committee to oversee its functions and policies. The committee will consist of representatives from Amjasa, Associations, consumers, water professionals as well as the agricultural and education sectors. From XAD: Amjasa cierra... Skype App for simultaneous Spanish and English translation The next update to Skype – still without an official release date – will allow you to speak in English to someone else speaking in Spanish, and vice versa. It does so by translating what you say into another language in “near real-time,” according to the company. You then hear a translation of what the person on the other end of the call says back, with an onscreen transcript of the conversation displayed on the screen as the conversation continues. (Eds note: Having looked at this technology at the Jávea computer Club, I can safely say that confusion will reign unless each party speaks very clearly and in simple, short sentences.) For full story see El Pais in English The Proposal to build a new International Secondary school behind Xàbia golf course The International Schools Partnership (ISP), which runs the Laude group of international private schools has approached Xàbia Town Council with the aim of building an international secondary school for more than 500 students in the Las Laderas area (near the urbanisation of the same name, next to the Cansalades road). The project would involve the investment of some €15 million on a land area of 20,000 m2. It would include the development of sporting and residencial facilities which would be used by students and sports teams (e.g. cy-

cling) who wish to carry out pre-season training in the Marina Alta. The location is ideal since it connects up with the Laude primary school in Benitatxell. If approval is met and all goes well, ISP plans to complete the facilities by mid 2016 and start calsses in September of the same year. from Las Provincias ..Empresa extranjera.. The ‘Riurau dels Arnauda de Xàbia’ relocated in the Parque Montaner above the Plaza de la Constitución was reopened on Sunday December 21st with a morning of cultural events including traditional music, dancing and poetry. Recent works have extended the roofing along the length of its 42 arches using traditional materials, including some 2000 canes and have provided electricity and lighting to enhance the building’s use as a public space. Ed’s note: This project was voted 2nd in the citizens’ participatory budget voting exercise in November 2013. From Javeamigos and Diarioinformación. Byelaws promote civic responsibility and conviviality The Town Council considered a package of 189 bye laws to regulate the use of public spaces to encourage civic responsibility and security and conviviality. The legislation involves an update of old standards that were in place in 1953, although many of these articles ceased to be in force with the approval of the Constitution. The new laws deal with modern problems, providing a legal framework with which to tackle activitie until now in legal limbo such as as the noise due to “botellón” street parties (drinking in a public area with the boot of the car open, music and partying - €750), street vending (not allowed), the abandonment of plots, and swimming whe there is a red flag on the beaches (€750); sex outdoors (€150); offering or asking for sexual services (€750); graffiti (200€); Urinating in public (€100);From XAD: Multas por...

Seven steps to invention success Last year, Spanish inventors applied for patents on 3,133 ideas, according to the Spanish Patenting and Brand Office (OEPM). Of these, 2,893 were granted. “And only around 300 are actually inventions as such,” notes Villacé. “And of these, only between two and five percent are actually developed, most of them with foreign capital: around 80 percent of Spanish inventions end up being made abroad,” he says….It’s not easy making a living from creativity in Spain. It is a country that has largely ignored its inventiveness: last year, for example, around 16,000 patents were registered in France. Spain’s 1,700 is a far cry from Germany’s almost 18,000; in the United States the figure is 57,000. But despite the obstacles they face, Spain’s inventors continue their work. El Pais in English Taking on the mushroom mafias The Civil Guard have carried out a series of operations throughout Spain as part of a crackdown on illegal harvesting of wild mushrooms that has seen organized gangs of up to 50 people camping out in woodland for weeks on end and stripping forests of valuable species. “There is huge demand,” explainde a spokesman for the force’s Seprona environmental protection unit. “It’s like drugs: there is always somebody prepared to buy.” He adds that so far the Civil Guard have been unable to establish who is behind the gangs. “But it’s clear that there are wholesale buyers. The whole thing is very well organized and structured. So far, we don’t know who is selling the mushrooms.” For full story see: El Pais

Jávea awarded the tarmac contract 2015 & the opening of calle Vicenza. Both works will start after Christmas. One is the plan to renew between 15,000 to 20,000 metres of paved streets in poor condition. The asphalt will be laid according to the needs identified by the depts of Public Works and Services and will cover areas of Cap de la Nau, Cap Marti, Arenal, Montgo-Valls, Lluca, Tarraula or Adsubia.

The work, tendered through public tender, was awarded to the Pavasal construction and amounts to 755,000 euros. Another urban contract that will take place at the beginning of the year is the redevelopment of calle Vicenza, a vtal connection to Primer Montañar that requires the demolition of an abandoned property known as Villa Sarita.

This work has been awarded via tender, to excavaciones Maye with a budget of 159,500 euros. Both projects are using the Treasury funds (surplus from 2013), by order of the Central Government, which may only be invested in certain types of project - defined as “financially sustainable”, ie, they do not generate future spending.

Road Contracts and Help to Work

The mayor, José Chulvi, and the Councillor for Economic Development, Juan Luis Cardona, have given diplomas to the students of the first edition of Xàbia Impulsa - a workshop sponsored by the Servef occupation, the Ministry of Employment and the European Social Fund. Ten students have completed a course on operating water distribution systems in which theory was combined with practice with the local water company.

The Town representatives commended the group for their hard work in the water company and hope that everyone taking the training and will find it a help entering the labour market. The next course (of the two workshops offered this year), like that offered for the plumbing sector, will be in masonry aimed at heritage restoration.

In Luke Kempner’s spot-on spoof, ‘The Only Way is Downton’, which plays the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre in Javea’s old town from Monday January 12 to Friday January 16, cultures clash and eras hilariously collide. So much so that one of the celebrities to turn up at the Abbey is the star of the modern day popular television programme, ‘Chatty Man’, Alan Carr. The estate has run out of money. Things are so desperate that the Abbey is taking in paying guests. Of course, one has to be a little bit selective even if the wolf is at the door and only those blessed with serious money, are quite famous and well connected are welcome – television stars, top sportsmen, people with a bit of spare cash to invest in climbing the social ladder all the way to Downton. Belts are being tightened – lobster only every other day. Staff are being positively encouraged to participate in any venture that could conceivably bring in a little cash. To such end, Bates is planning to play Andy Murray in a tennis tournament; cook, Mrs Patmore and her assistant Daisy are going to compete in the Great British Bake-Off; Sarah O’Brien and Thomas Barrow are going on Pointless. The Crawley family are making sacrifices. Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham is, for the second time, prepared to marry for money.

Mr Carr has arrived at the Abbey as the Reverend Carr. Should it be that he is going to officiate at the wedding he should swat up with the structure of the British aristocracy. When he arrived he was heard to exclaim, “What’s a dowager anyway? I always thought it was a type of duvet.” Written and performed by Luke Kempner, ‘The Only Way is Downton’ was a sell-out at the Edinburgh Festival and when it moved to London.

No, Mr Carr, She Is Not A Duvet

Luke has enjoyed rave reviews and a very successful UK tour with his brilliant parody of the world’s best loved period drama. Following its run – just five nights- at the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre, Luke will be taking his show to America for a three month tour. Mr Kempner brings a ‘cast’ of thirtytwo to the stage of the Javea Players’ Studio Theatre to tell his hilarious version of Downton which will play there from Monday January 12 to Friday January 16. Curtain-up each evening is at 8 pm. Tickets are priced at 12 euros and are available from the box office on 96 579 5390 and online at boxofficejp@gmail.com Theatre-goers who wish to make their evening extra special can enjoy a pre-theatre dinner at the La Cocina restaurant from 6pm. A Sneak Preview of The Deadly Diplomat by George Thomas

Next month we will be reviewing The Deadly Diplomat by local author George Thomas. As it is Christmas, we thought you might like a sneak preview of his recently launched book. An espionage thriller set in the 1980’s, inspired by many actual events in Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Ethiopia, the plot weaves the political tension of the day into an interesting thriller. Posing as a Soviet Cultural Attaché, an undercover Spetsnaz officer wreaks havoc wherever he’s posted in the Middle East’ The video preview, below, is a taster. http://youtu.be/_ gcgCSBMcGc To see more books by George you can check out his website www.georgejthomas.com

The Laundry was originally started by Maggie & Ted (who built the entire block) as an all-purpose built American-Style Coin Laundrette. Over the thirty-eight years that the laundry has been here it has only passed through five sets of hands to the current owners. Lorrie Hawke and her team will be known to many locals as they have run the Laundry for over twelve years. Most of the changes to the way that the Laundry Services are still run took place under Ross & Diane Ord’s 13 year Stewardship. They changed the laundry to a much more service-based semi-industrial style business, bringing in new dry-cleaning equipment and contracting out carpets and leather to local specialists. Everything is catered for within Los Delfines from suits, dresses, coats, sheets, towels, duvets, bedcovers, sofa & seat covers, cushions and curtains to tablecloths - from casual clients & private homes to large villa rental agencies, contract customers and restaurants - they will clean pretty much anything that will go inside a washing machine or that can be dry-cleaned! In the time that Lorrie has run Los Delfines, they have always concentrated on updating to the latest machines. They now have hand irons, Roller irons, new dryers and washers in a range that can take items from 5kg to 30kg loads.

Services also include ‘iron only’ to ‘dry only’ or any combination of all the above - so they can clean virtually anything from a child’s teddy bear to a car cover! Because of the friendly atmosphere created by the team at Los Delfines, Seasonal staff come back Summer after Summer, including a Teacher in Italy who comes to work at Los Delfines every Summer Holiday! Of the key staff, Sam has been at the Los Delfines since 2002, Santi since 2003, Jade since 2004 and Kirsten has just celebrated her eighth year. Young Musicians’ Concert

At the beginning of December, the Asociación de Profesionales y Amigos de la Música (APAM - who organise the Concurso Internacional de Piano “Villa de Xabia” every year), put on a superb concert featuring young talented local musicians (pictured below & over the following pages). Musical Director Natividad Ballarín & local Entrepreneur Monica Suarez Penoucos organised the event in the beautiful Jessica Bataille Studio. Surrounded by interior design objet d’art the large centre stage was encompassed on three sides by the audience. Each mini-space creating its own ambience much aided by the excellent accoustics.

The concert began with very professional performance by Ana Marco on piano. Miriam Llerena was mesmerising on several percussion instruments closely followed by Carlos Mulet who gave a passionate performance showing how very different the same Percussion instruments can sound with different emphasis. Rounding off the evening, Pascual Safont delivered a polished piano recital. All in all an excellent event and it fully justifies APAM’s belief in the importance of Music in Education. you can follow APAM on Facebook

Hi Everyone!

Easy

computer-talk

Is your computer slower than a herd of snails traveling through peanut butter? Does it behave randomly when you use it for daily tasks that used to run smoothly? Have you suffered the attack of viruses, malware or other intrusive software? Well if you find yourself in any of these situations, perhaps it’s the time to restore it to its factory settings and in this and on the following’s edition posts we are going to see some ways to do this.

system, a partition for the operating system and all installed programs, and a partition for all extra data. Starting a recovery via the recovery partition usually means that you have to press one of the “F” keys (such as F1-F12) the moment after you hit the power button. These are some key combination for computers from first-line manufacturers: •

First of all, as whenever we are going to tamper with important settings, we must be absolutely sure that we have a very recent backup of all our vital data if it is stored on the same drive as the Operating System, just in case something goes wrong.

• • • • • • • •

If we decide to perform a task like the one we are about to explain, it’s to improve the experience of working with our computers, not to go ballistic because we suddenly realise that we’ve lost all or part of our photos, videos or other types of files that are important for us… If we have a separate partition this backup isn’t mandatory, as the changes we are going to make should only affect the main drive where the Operating System ‘lives’, but to perform regular data backup still it isn’t the worst of the ideas. Most of the modern computers come with the operating system pre-installed and have a recovery partition to restore it. Therefore the first option should be to do the restore using the utility the own manufacturer of our computer has created for this task. A partition is a portion of the hard drive that is sectioned off. Primarily, they’re used to limit the amount of space that can be used for certain data. For example, a hard drive could have several partitions: a recovery partition which contains all the recovery setup files necessary for a clean refresh of the operating

Acer – Alt + F10 Asus – F9 Dell /Alienware – F8 HP – F11 Lenovo – F11 MSI – F3 Samsung – F4 Sony – F10 Toshiba – 0 (not the one on the numeric pad) while turning on, release key when Toshiba logo appears

Doing so tells the BIOS that you’d like to run the recovery setup rather than load your Windows installation. Then, simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery — it should be very similar to a full-screen installation of any other program. Once the recovery installer has completed, your computer will be in the exact same state as it was when you turned it on for the first time. This may also include all of the software that came with it. If your computer doesn’t have a recovery partition, but it did come with the operating system pre-installed, it should have come with recovery discs. These are CDs or DVDs that contain all of the recovery setup data that would normally be stored in a recovery partition. In other words, the experience with the recovery discs should be exactly the same as it is with a recovery partition.

Jávea Grapevine No.173 2015|

The only difference is that you have to boot off of the discs rather than a recovery partition.

Well, that is all for now. On our next post we will see two more methods to successfully achieve this task.

Some manufacturers also include utilities that allow you to burn your own recovery discs, offering you another location for the recovery data.

Please find our contact details on our advert in this edition; in case you have any questions or queries, we can assure a quick and professional reply.

Or you could delete the recovery partition so you can use more of your hard drive for your stuff. Recovery partitions tend to be around 20GB, so you’re gaining quite a bit of extra space.

If these queries are of general benefit, we will post the reply on further editions of the Grapevine so they can be for everybody’s benefit. Back to work till the next post! Until then, keep clicking!!

Note that by deleting the recovery partition, you won’t be able to use the “boot by pressing an F key” method of starting the recovery; you’ll be forced to use the discs that you burned yourself from then on. So be careful not to scratch them and make sure they’re kept safely somewhere you can remember where to locate them if needed in the future!

Apasa was founded 15 yrs ago by a group of Spanish, English and Germans. It started from humble beginnings: a few concrete kennels and no fencing, but over the years it has grown so much and we now have upwards of 200 dogs, we also have quarantine kennels for when new or sick dogs are bought in. We work with the town hall and the police in collecting dogs that have been lost or abandoned. We need the support of our members and all the fundraising events to keep us going. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

Nelly

female, Shelter since 11.07.2013 Crossbreed, DOB 15.07.2011 48 cm Nelly was found on the street one night. She was scared and shivering all over and when we had a closer look at her we found her to be very skinny and full of ticks and fleas. After a few days she got accustomed to her new situation here in the dog shelter and she calmed down. She now likes to live with her new friends and she prefers them to the people. Nelly needs time to trust persons she does not know. A new owner would therefore have to give her some time and he will need patience. As many abandoned dogs she will have to develop trust first but then she will return her unconditional love. She is a sweet, playful and friendly female. Give her a chance for a new life.

Female, Shelter since 08.05.2013 Crossbreed, DOB 15.01.2013 51 cm Ilu and her seven siblings were found when searching for food in a big container. She is a fine girl, who is used to getting attention from people and she is ready for adoption.

Nemo

Male, Shelter since 09.03.2012 Pointer Mix DOB 15.08.2011 58 cm Nemo was found wandering the streets on his own, confused and probably just left there because he became too big, or just behaved like a dog which has never been trained. Nemo has a good nature, but he is very active. If you have a big garden or like to go for long walks, Nemo will be very happy to accompany you. An apartment or small garden would not be appropriate he really needs to lose energy. If he is given the opportunity to let off steam, then he will become a very good and loving dog!

Patch is a very broadminded and calm podenco. He is not much interested in other dogs or human beings, we believe that he must have been all alone and always outside. Patch would love to have new owners who could offer him a garden, a dogs-hut and a lot of walks. Although he had no chance of getting acquainted to it, he walks well on the lead.

VINTAGE GEMS

| Jávea Grapevine No.173 2015

The Art Centre Association in Javea do valuations of antiques and collectables, EVERY Monday morning at the Art Centre. Valuations cost €3 per item or set. The total proceeds will benefit the charity, ‘HELP’ of Denia and Marina Alta. As many of you will know we hosted the Antiques Roadshow every year for the past 3 years. The first was in May 2011. The queues were long and the team of experts could really do with more time to advise people and do the research. We have an extensive library on antiques here at the Art Centre. We can talk privately as to where people might be able to sell their family heirlooms. (without the children knowing?) As we get older many of us would like to sell our antiques but are worried about being ripped off.

We have access to 9 experts and can cover every aspect of antiques and collectibles. We don’t buy, or sell for you but we will advise you properly. The charge is €3 per item (or set). For example a dinner service would be a set (at €3) and one only need bring 3 or 4 items of the set to have it valued, though extra photos could be helpful. Bubblewrap, towels or blankets are better for wrapping than newspaper.

Ebay can be a great place to sell but it can be a tedious process. One has to take close up accurate photos and write a very detailed description. There is also commission to pay to Ebay for online auctions and there is a fee to pay even if you don’t sell. It’s sometimes better when you have found out what something is worth, to let someone else do all the work, so they can sell it on for a profit.

Should you wish to sell your items; the experts will be able to suggest the best course of action. For valuable items, auctions in Madrid or London might be appropriate. There will be a free handout sheet with all this information on.

All too often we hold on to items because we know they are ‘worth something’ but we are frightened to sell, for fear of being ripped off !

As your favourite television programmes on antiques will remind you, there is always sellers’ commission to pay at an auction and the cost of transporting your wares.

For those of us who collected antiques and collectibles over the years or were lucky enough to inherit lovely things. The investment in antiques has proved to be really much more secure, valuable and a much better place for your money than a bank.

HELP Antiques Roadshow

One of the reasons it’s a good time to sell now is that the market is buoyant. Younger folk looking for places to invest and totally disillusioned with banks (in any country) are turning to retro collectibles to secure a pension in the future. Also, so called ‘brown’ furniture is undergoing a revival because finally everyone has realised that solid wood is a better investment than chipboard. If you are looking to invest, buy something you like. You will already know that gold has always been the safe bet in times of crisis, silver is currently doing well. However don’t buy NEW jewellery for investment, it will take far longer to realise any profit because of the initial profit margin in the new retail price. Another difficult item for investment is a limited edition print.

They hardly increase in value, Rembrandt did so many etchings they are still almost affordable, as are the numbered ceramic plates produced by the workers in Picasso’s studio. Items that are too large to bring to the Art Centre, should be photographed and emailed in advance to artcentrejavea@yahoo.com for example : please photograph labels, joints, locks, signatures, marks on ceramics, hallmarks etc. HOWEVER, you don’t get the results until you arrive clutching your €3 in your hot little hand ! ! Phone Art Centre Chairwoman Lorely Griffiths 966 47 20 49 for more info or just turn up on a Monday 10am to 1pm. Art Centre, C/ Lago Tana. Javea. Near the entrance to Las Laderas, turn behind El Campo restaurant, Lago Tana is 1st on the left.

NEPALESE RESTAURANTS > Being largely ignorant of Indian cuisine we have wondered why these next three restaurants are talked about over and above all other (Indian? style) restaurants and two are listed at Trip Advisor higher than the other Indian restaurants. We can only assume it must be the Nepalese influence and the reputation of Northern Indian cuisine ! Go and try them. Restaurante BUDDHA PALACE Arenal - opposite former La Plaza & tennis club. Always a most enjoyable experience and the “bush telegraph” tells us that this is the place to go ! 96 579 2894 buddhapalace1@gmail. com / Open: tlj Restaurante GURKHA PALACE : Avda. All sorts of combinations can be served to take home although there are facilities for eating on their terrace. Ideal for the hungry ! 96 646.4191 / f.Sun. CHINESE Restaurante < The WOK BUFFET > : Jávea, at the Barclays roundabout. Very good for families and now with an extensive choice of shellfish included in their bargain price. Eat all you like for €9.95 (special price for kids under 7). Go early (12:30h for lunch, 19:30h for dinner) when the huge spread is at its best. Attentive service. No muzak. A bit of a “canteen” ambience but this is a great quality “fill-up” if you are hungry and feeding hordes of kids. 96 579.7016 / daily 12-24h. Restaurante (the 5-star) BENI ASIA***** !! : On right side of the Cumbre del Sol road which leads off Benitachell high street (left at traffic lights just after Mas-y-Mas). Visiting residents of Singapore and Hong Kong have strongly confirmed this view. Peking Duck a speciality of course ! Every dish tastes different and the food is free of MSG. Take a group of 6 people and order these dishes : 10, 24, 34, 51, 54, 70, 89, 99 & 121 and then tell us that wasn’t the best chinese meal of the year ?? 96 649.4042 / fanfan@beniasia.com Bar/Restaurante LAS OLAS : HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ...... why there are always so many cars outside the Bar LAS OLAS (on the Cabo de la Nao road, on the right, half way between Barclays and the Ferreteria PLA48) ? FISH

Restaurante LES FOUGES (fish restaurant and delicatessen & retail fish shop) : Cami Paellero 3, Moraira (drive south from Moraira – on the right side before Pepe la Sal). We think that the re-location and enlargement of this fish shop and restaurant to the coast road just south of Moraira is the most exciting gastroevent of the year; uniquely here is a fish shop attached to a restaurant (or vice versa !). This marvellous French family-run operation offers a huge range of fish and shell fish as well as the best selection of French cheeses you’ve seen anywhere in Spain (incl. the divine Boursault) …. and a marvellous range of delicious pâtisseries, tartelettes & gâteaux, patés, terrines, French tinned/bottled specialities and French bread. In a separate room are 6 tanks of lobsters ! Also on offer are scallops, fresh haddock, skate, cabillaud/ cod, lubina, dorada, oysters, potted shrimps, tarama (French – excellent but stronger than the UK version) and many other sorts of fish and fruits de mer – the range is huge). Sometimes they have whole kippers (often out of stock. Guests must first choose their meal in the shop. It is then transferred to the kitchens for preparation. They also serve meat and look after veggies !! The wine list is the most astonishing we have seen anywhere – especially of French wines – because they are at amazing prices (same at retail as at the table – a Pouilly Fuissé at €14). They tell us they are starting to open on some evenings. Best arrange a driver to take you home. Booking essential as, no surprise, it is full most of the time !! Tel: 678 488895 / f. Restaurante AMARRE 152 (Jávea) : literally “Mooring 152”, tranquil situation by the bobbing boats at the very head of the mooring creek that goes inland from the Parador. Menus del dia €18 & 20 (fish). Excellent for rice/fish dishes. A recent visit showed them on top form. 96 579.0629 / f. Monday http://www.verema.com/

AND NOW – a sister establishment to Amarre 152 AMARRE TAPAS : Along the Jávea seafront nearly opposite La Siesta. New reports reaching us have not been too good. We await further (better?) comments, please. AND A NEW TIP OFF : For an excellent FISH & CHIPS try THE INN on the GREEN (Bowling Club on Benitachell road) !! Restaurante LA CALETA : Avda. Ultramar 114, Jávea (Cala Blanca). Closes end Sept. for the winter. Restaurante LA CANTINA DE JAVEA : Situate right in front of the fishing fleet in Jávea’s port (on the ground floor right around the back – left side - of the one storey building by the fishing boats). Clientele is very Spanish. They are often very busy so you must go early (say 12:30h). Very good prices. Their fish menus consist of the catches of the day. They are serving all day long (and even after the cinema). 96 579 2190 / open tlj : 7/7. Restaurante SUR : ...at the beautiful Granadella creek (down off the Cabo de la Nao and the No.1 beach of the Marina Alta); certainly the best fish restaurant in Jávea (they own their own boat and sometimes have an

Restaurante MENA : Wonderful position on the rocks at the end of the Las Rotas road (go over Jávea / Montgó road to Denia and turn hard right at bottom roundabout. It was expensive with bad muzak. It also used to be xenophobic but we hear it’s under new management so certainly worth a try…. drive on a little further and there’s another good restaurant on the right. 96 578.0943 / f. evenings / http:// mena.restaurantesok.com/aquiok/ detallrest.jsp?id=547&prov=Alicante FISH ITEM (retail) ! Outside the Ermita supermarket (by the little church on the Jávea to Jesús Pobre road) at 10:00h on a Saturday morning is to be found an enterprising Dutchman (Arjen) who is selling fresh martjes, smoked eel, roll-mops, smoked mackerel, buckling (a herring smoked whole – as opposed to kippers which are smoked flat), smoked trout and potted shrimps only to order fresh/ frozen HERRINGS (mostly with their roes – and at €1.25 each). When did you last enjoy a fresh herring ? Surely the most marvellous of fishes (none recently – sorry !). Orders to : 667 997300 (every Sat. morning from 10:00h) or argentocorazon@gmail. com [ and inside this supermarket, at Xavi’s excellent meat counter, can be found the very best STILTON in the area ]. Arjen is in MORAIRA on Thursdays 10 - 14h at Tabaira – Palco. INCODNITO < Fish ‘n’ Chips > Jávea, Arenal beach, on main car park. It is not usual for such an establishment to find its way onto this list but it has proved to be very reliable with both fresh fish and chips of excellent quality. Tel : 96 577.0068 / f. Sunday.

JESUS POBRE Restaurante LA TASCA : Charming Italian owner – set in an attractive courtyard. Portions tend to be small so this restaurant isn’t cheap (€140 for 4). As it was full we found the service under strain. There is musak but, mercifully, not in the courtyard. The lentil soup was superb. Renowned for meat cooked on an opengrilled fire yet all choices were reasonably priced but were all of cheaper cuts except for the CHULETON (T-bone) at €35/ kg and this is the reason for going to La Tasca ! Great crêpes but the Panacotta was tiny and inadequate. Well-heeled clientele. Approaching Jesus Pobre from the JáveaGata road take the 2nd left before entering the village and it is on the left corner at the top of this short street. English spoken. Must book. Tel: 96 575.6285.

Javea Amigos Update MERCATCHEF JUNIOR AIMS TO TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT HEALTHY COOKING WITH FRESH PRODUCE

Registration has opened for initiative which will begin on Saturday 17th January. A new initiative for children has been launched for 2015 aimed at combining food, education and promotion of local products in Jávea. As explained by councillor Juan Luis Cardona (Economic Development) the cooking workshops - dubbed ‘Mercatchef Junior’ - are designed for children aged between 7 and 14 years who have a desire to learn and have fun. They will be held on Saturday morning in the central foyer of the Mercat Municipal in the historic centre of town and will be teaching the youngsters about the world of cooking with local fresh quality products that can be found in the indoor market area. Those wishing to take part in Mercatchef Junior should register at the offices of the ‘Agencia de Desarrollo Local’ and CREAMA in Avenida Trenc d’Alba or by phone on 96 579 42 66. The workshops are limited to a maximum of 20 children to be practical and ensure that they learn from the experience so those interested should register as soon as possible. The workshops will be priced at around 12-15 euros which

covers the cost of the products (which can be tasted by both the young chefs and their families afterwards) while the classes and the cooking appliances will be provided by the caterers who will be taking charges of the workshops. The classes will start with Tomas Franco as teacher, an owner of several renowned restaurants in Jávea, and will be staged with the collaboration of the ‘Asociación de Restauradores de Xàbia (ARX)’ and commercial associations such as ‘Xàbia Histórica’ & the stall-holders association of, who was represented at the launch by its president Rosi Caballero. Franco explained that the classes will begin with a tour of the market stalls to see the available products, discover seasonal availability and choose recipes that will make up both starters and main courses as well as the dessert. The children will work on simple menus whilst learning to eat healthier, quality products. They will also discover the work put in to create each dish as well as how much money it costs to produce them. The classes will begin as non-competitive events but the top students will later compete for a prize in a special competition.
