PAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Budget Fare with All the Perks Welcome aboard! Of late, you may have noticed some Bombardier turbo-propeller planes and Airbus A320 jets with the familiar PAL “Sunriser” logo on their tails. Let me introduce you to our just re-launched affiliate carrier, PAL Express, which used to be known as Airphil Express until March 14, 2013. Those of you who fly regularly might remember that back in May 2008, PAL Express was our low-fares sub-brand that flew mostly intraregional routes across the Visayas and Mindanao using turbo-props. With the launch of our modernization and expansion program, we brought back the PAL Express brand to serve as another platform for our service delivery efforts alongside Philippine Airlines. It’s not simply a name change. Unlike five years ago when PAL Express was a low-cost, nofrills airline, this time it will be fully aligned with PAL’s renowned service standards. For instance, if you’re flying on PAL Express, you’ll enjoy complimentary snacks, drinks, reading materials, and other amenities like you do on Philippine Airlines. You’ll also earn miles through membership in Mabuhay Miles, PAL’s popular frequent-flyer program. All these perks at the same fares you’ve always favored—easy on the pocket. PAL Express will soon add new-generation single-aisle and wide-body jets to its fleet and expand its route network to cover more points in the Philippines and overseas. Indeed, this month, PAL Express is launching a thrice-weekly service to Basco, capital of Batanes, becoming the first full-service carrier to fly to the country’s northernmost province. PAL itself is likewise adding a new destination to its rapidly growing network this month with the start of four-times-weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur, our first to the Malaysian capital since 2006. Watch out for more service enhancements in the coming months as we reintroduce PAL Express. We’re sure you’ll like what you see, hear, taste, and experience. Mabuhay!

EDITOR’S NOTE
Kuala Lumpur’s Quiet Charms he good news is PAL is resuming its direct flights to Kuala Lumpur (KL) and that makes it our cover story. To whet your appetite to visit this bustling Malaysian capital, our contributor Colin Roohan writes about its ten best attractions. Photo by Justin Ventura
Last year, I had a chance to visit KL, to receive a best photo award won by Mabuhay magazine from PATA. It was a photo of Palawan, taken by George Tapan. I brought my daughter, Kim, along on the trip and we had fun checking out the city. When we drove and walked around, we got the feeling of being in a city that was dynamic yet orderly. Well-paved roads with nice sidewalks shaded by trees; at night, adequately lit with street lamps. We felt safe and secure. We also checked out some of the attractions that Colin wrote about. Of course, we dropped by the city’s famous landmark – the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s a nice place to visit in the evening. At night, the towers glow like jewels in the sky and in its vicinity, are numerous places where you can dine, do a little shopping, and stroll in the parks. We tried the street food at Jalan Alor, lined with food stalls, each with its own tempting aroma. It’s a nice, casual dining experience with a lot of food variety. The quality is good; prices are reasonable. You also get a chance to eat and mingle with the locals. This food street is also clean and safe. Judging by how full the tables are, it’s clear that Malaysia has become prosperous.
Learning to do your own batik painting is one of the unique travel experiences in KL.
The hotel that we stayed in was a new one, the Royale Chulan, adjacent to a craft village. Besides exhibiting the best products of Malaysia, they also teach visitors how to make local crafts. My daughter, Kim, gamely took up the batik painting in an afternoon session. We returned the following day to pick up her design of her favorite animal, a turtle. Kuala Lumpur is certainly not a boring destination. Just feel this city and you will find something appealing.

We, at Philippine Airlines, are happy to have you on board. Please sit back and relax, and allow us to make your flight enjoyable. For your own safety and convenience, please observe the regulations listed on the back pages. “Mabuhay” is a Filipino verb in the form of a command: “Live!” It is also a wish: “May you live!” Whoever says it wishes you the great gift of a long and full life. It is both a blessing and a lusty cheer. “Mabuhay” (ma-boo-high) is such a large word that it lends itself to a wide number of secondary uses: Welcome, Congratulations, Thanks, Godspeed, Hello, Good Luck, Cheers, Posit, Sante, Viva, Kambei, Aloha, and many other expressions of goodwill. All these are a part of life, but it is the gift of life that makes them possible. “Mabuhay,” in other words, is an invocation and a celebration of life itself.

Spice Up YoUr SUndown Once a hole-in-the-wall along Boracay’s Station 1, Kasbah has become one of the island’s unique gems, with its grounded, colorful atmosphere and gastronomic delights attracting the artsy and party crowds. Owners Martin and Madonna English’s furniture-export business brought them to Morocco and thus began an experiment with the local cuisine. This restaurant is ablaze at night with sunkissed beachgoers sipping wine on cushions scattered upon plush rugs, or testing out hoola hoops with a beer in hand. Kasbah believes in catering to all the senses, so you won’t just find authentic Moroccan cuisine, but also sounds from a live band or relaxing tunes from a DJ as well as the occasional art installation. You might also see instead of table numbers, the names of Moroccan cities along with a bit of trivia, so you could well be dining at table Casablanca. www.kasbahboracay.com

Once you enter Corazon, you can’t help but look up and be stunned by the vaulted ceiling. It’s the focal point of this newly opened restaurant at the East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza and serves as the perfect backdrop of the cathedral-inspired interiors. And with such inspired design, you can expect an equally good Filipino-Spanish cuisine. Start with the Salamanca or baby squids in olive oil. The subtle flavor of the olive oil and roast garlic seeps into the tender squids. Other bestsellers include the very festive Paella Mariscos and the incredibly tender Madrid (ox tripe stew with chorizo and pine nuts). Main courses will have you choosing from the likes of Slow Roast Porchetta, succulent and fatty salted pork balanced by a mild rice pilaf, and Cabanatuan Longganisa (native sausage) Paella, a classic dish made richer thanks to its topping of sweetened local sausages and fried eggs. BORACAY CONTINUES TO REAP AWARDS It’s getting harder to keep track of Boracay’s piling awards! In popular online travel guide TripAdvisor.com’s Travelers’ Choice 2013, Boracay’s White Beach was voted by thousands of travelers as the best beach in Asia this year, for its “crystal clear, warm water that you can laze on for days on end.” Other Philippine beaches also made the top 25: the Secret Lagoon of El Nido, Palawan (9th) and Boracay’s Yapak Beach (10th).
FILIPINO FILMMAKERS BAG INTERNATIONAL AWARDS Two times the charm for two young Filipino filmmakers, who won for their short films at the Manhattan International Film Festival held in New York last Feb. 22–24. Tanglaw by Adrielle Esteban of the University of the Philippines and Man of Squares by Inshallah Montero of De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde were among the top five winners at the fest.

The Philippines is certainly living up to its tourism slogan “It’s More Fun in the Philippines!” The country jumped 12 places in the “2013 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report” by the World Economic Forum compared with the year earlier. Ranking 82nd out of 140 countries, the global think tank named the Philippines “the most improved country in the region” and praised the government’s prioritization of the travel and tourism industry.

n the 1960s Teachers Village was a quiet, sleepy, middleclass residential area, then part of a government housing project for teachers. But as the years passed, makeshift food stands and stores began sprouting, thanks to residents bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. These paved the way for the conversion of family homes into trendy restaurants. Soon, food franchises served everything from shawarma (sliced grilled beef, chicken, lamb, mutton, or veal wrapped in pita bread), to pearl and bubble tea drinks, to roast chicken, pasta, and pizza. Maginhawa (Filipino for “comfortable”) Street in Teachers Village is located close to Quezon City’s sprawling University of the Philippines. And it’s all about good, old-fashioned comfort food—the kind that makes you feel like you’re eating mommy’s home-cooked treats.

Van Gogh Is Bipolar puts a spin on comfort food with a menu that reads like a “who’s who” of people who are known to have bipolar disorder: rock musician Axl Rose’s Egg Shot, actor Mel Gibson’s Darkest Sins, and even President Miriam’s Meal (inspired by a popular local lady senator known for her feisty personality).

acau is synonymous with luxury. The city pampers visitors with Michelin-starred restaurants and high-end hotels and spas. But away from the baccarat tables, this former Portuguese colony also offers another surprise: adventure. THE OUTDOORS The hilly terrain of Coloane and Taipa offer ample opportunities for hiking and cycling. Unpaved hiking is available to the eastern side of Taipa, closer to the airport, while paved trails are located on the western side. But Coloane’s forested hiking trails are the real goto hiking spot, and some are perfect for mountain biking. Alto de Colaone, Macau’s highest point at 171 meters, is located in this area amid a stretch of nature trails and close to tourist attractions like the A-Ma Cultural Village and the Statue of A-Ma. Macau, surprisingly, has two beaches. Hac Sa, overlooked by a Westin resort, is a stretch of beach with black sand, while Cheoc Van, also known as Bamboo Bay, is smaller but with gold-colored sand. The wooded area next to Cheoc Van is a favorite of campers who want to get away from the city, while Bamboo Bay attracts swimmers and even the occasional surfers.

Crystal Cruises (www.crystalcruises.com) offers new Six-Star Sailing Adventures from Australia and several ports of call in Asia, filled with onboard activities and cultural shore excursions. Newly renovated, the US$65 million spent has created a floating marvel, with updated staterooms, public spaces, and many dedicated areas for children. Crystal Cruises has been voted “world’s best” by readers of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler—more than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort. Cruising mate Anton San Diego and I recently enjoyed the Crystal Symphony when she sailed from Singapore to Bangkok. It was a higher plane of luxury. At the Luxe Club, Anton regaled us all with his singing prowess, while my traveling cousin, Sunshine de Leon, showed the other guests that all Pinoys could belt out a tune. Anton had a lucky streak that evening, winning at Black Jack in the ship’s casino. SHOPPING AND BROADWAY My cruising aunt, Maribeth de Leon, and I attended two Chinese art lessons. Of course, these were mercifully short and still gave me time to wander around the ship and do some shopping. Amex Travel GM Lara Santos and I joined the informative Taylormade golf clinic with PGA instructor Roberto Borgatti. The golf tips were so helpful that I even bought his DVD along with numerous other items in the ship’s boutique. We ended the day enjoying Crystal Cruises’ spectacular production show. Summer Stand-OutS The classics of beachwear get an upgrade with these surprising twists, writes giancarLa eSpinoSa aritao. SurpriSe! SurpriSe! There is more than meets the eye when it comes to swimwear. A unique trend these days is water-activated prints. Vilebrequin, a luxury swimwear brand established in 1971 in St. Tropez, offers “Moorea”, swim trunks that have a jellyfish design that appear when the suit gets wet. Similarly, Bonobos has Magic Print board shorts that shun its solid-colored look for prints when taken for a dip.

Wear ShoeS to the beach. Open your mind when it comes to footwear. Rubber flip-flops may be trusty, but they are a tad too predictable. Try a slip-on shoe like the Nike Gato Beach shoe. Made out of soft foam, it is perfect for kicking around a ball in the sand. Or go for beach shoes that look anything but beach shoes. The quick-drying Onia Montrose shoe has the look of casual sneakers, but is completely water-worthy.

ou’re going to Guam, and you’re on the lookout for an essential experience. While the beaches are nice, and your resort is likely very chic and modern, you’re the kind of traveler who likes to get off the tourist trail to choose your own adventure. Follow our advice for a quirky, unique, and off-the-radar good time in a destination that does a good job of keeping its secrets close to the vest. DON’T PINCH YOURSELf What is blue, weighs up to nine pounds, and likes to snack on coconut meat? The answer is the coconut crab (Birgus latro), also known as the palm thief, considered the largest land-living arthropod on planet earth. While the coconut crab’s meat has long been considered a delicacy and an aphrodisiac by Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders, Guam has instituted strict regulations on coconut crab

Bite by Bite Guam’s culinary traditions have been formed through time by waves of Spanish, Portuguese, American, European, Filipino, and Malaysian visitors. Some dishes, like chicken kelaguen, have become world-renowned. Try morcizas (chicken neck stuffed with peppers, garlic, and onion); octopus stewed in coconut milk, and eskabeche (fried fish in a sauce of mixed soy sauce, vinegar, and veggies). You’re unlikely to come across fruit bat soup, a long-gone island delicacy, but we doubt you’d be brave enough to try it anyway if given the chance.
harvesting after the species was nearly wiped out. We encourage you to get up close and personal with these curious creatures by adopting one (if only for a few hours) at the quirky Chamorro Village Night Market. These massive crabs are also becoming popular pets among islanders. Test your mettle and your nerve by petting and posing for pictures with the crabs every Wednesday and Friday night. The crabs don’t bite, but they pack a powerful pinch. AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Mount Lamlam is the tallest mountain on earth, if measured from its base at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Your friends don’t need to know that only 406 meters of the mountain stick out of the water; they’ll be too impressed with your climbing skills to care. An easy trek to the peak begins at the Cetti Bay Overlook trailhead and takes roughly 35 minutes to complete. After your climb, visit the historically interesting Spanish Bridge and the stunning War in the Pacific National Historic Park (both in the nearby village of Agat). First-time visitors to Guam are sometimes hesitant to strap on a snorkel or wetsuit and explore the sea. Guam’s state-of-the-art Underwater Observatory and Fish Eye Visitor Center located north of Piti Village is a unique way to get close with the sea monsters that make you nervous. It is celebrated in Chamorro culture as the place where the first people to walk the earth were created. Beautiful Fouha Rock rises 46 meters above the sea, and is noted as the resting place of the goddess Fu’una. Fu’una and her brother Puntan are said to have created the world; they are celebrated by the Chamorro people annually. Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed at Umatac Bay in 1521, and his exploits are now memorialized by a monument in the center of town, and a festival held every spring. The haunting ruins of the San Dionisio Church, built in 1681 and destroyed by a series of fires and earthquakes (the last in 1902), can be found near the Magellan monument.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to ride a water buffalo, here’s your chance. It may seem like a silly idea, but climbing atop a massive carabao, Guam’s domesticated water buffalo, is good fun. The carabao is considered the unofficial symbol of Guam and is revered by the Chamorro people. Carabao races were a popular part of Chamorro culture during the mid-20th century, but we suggest you master riding before you try to race off into the sunset. Outfitters in Fort Nuestra de Soledad and Chamorro Village offer carabao programs that the kids will love; learning about the history of these animals is an important part of their continued survival. Come stomp the boonie If a local invites you out on an afternoon of boonie stomping, you should certainly say yes. Boonie stomping is a local term for hiking. Guided boonie stomping treks can be arranged through most island hotels, but some of the best trails can be done on self-guided adventures. One of Guam’s most rewarding boonie stomps is through the Guam National Wildlife Refuge en route to Ritidian Point. Spot bats flying through the jungle canopy (or run from them as fast as you can), marvel as turtles lay their eggs on the sand, and explore caves. n

Feng Shui RitualS FoR SaFe tRavel MARITES ALLEN shares some simple rituals before you head out to your dream travel destination. When setting out on a journey, it’s important to protect ourselves from the effects of bad feng shui. T
he majestic Mayon Volcano, towering at over 8,000 feet above sea level, is probably the first thing that will come to mind when you think of the Bicol Region. It is visible from nearly all cities and towns in Albay, and in nearby provinces too. But we are almost sure that the best view is from the air—in a chopper! When in Legazpi, a scenic helicopter ride over and around the crater of the world-famous volcano is a must. Before you even get near Mayon, your eyes will feast on a rewarding view of Albay’s landscape: rolling hills, coconut trees, lava vein, lava formations—the list goes on!
The view up there is even more spectacular; a sight to behold especially on a clear, cloudless day. Seeing Mayon Volcano’s perfectly shaped cone up close is truly an amazing experience, and might just be the most unforgettable one-hour flight of your life. PRIME ADVENTURE
A MOVEABLE FEAST: The Philippine Hobie Challenge changes routes each year, rewarding participants with spectacular views of beaches and bays. Photos by Joey Zaballero
ISLAND TO ISLAND SAILING 7,107 islands. Where do you begin? JOEY ZABALLERO tells us that sailing is probably the best way to explore the vast Philippine archipelago.
I
t’s 2 a.m. and thousands of stars—more than I had ever seen in my life—twinkled brightly on a pristine beach called Maniwaya. Oddly enough, no tour outfitter could tell exactly where it is in the southern Luzon province of Marinduque. The evening before, this was the sight of an amazing buffet dinner of beef, pasta, and other treats you wouldn’t normally expect to find on a deserted beach. The feast was followed by an open bar where the favored drink was rum cola; beer and wine also flowed freely. No, the moveable feast of Maniwaya wasn’t a mere holiday picnic. That was a “reward” for the participants of the grueling Philippine Hobie Challenge that occurs between February and March. Sometimes, at the end of a long day of sailing, one stumbles upon a paradisial beach where everyone pitch tents and gather around a roaring fire and have a barbecue party. Or, at other times, the fleet will call it a day in a five-star island resort, such as Bellaroca in Marinduque. Hobies, invented by Hobart Alter, have been around since the 1960s in various forms. It’s not really uncommon to find them for rent in resorts where holiday folks can take a leisurely sail just off the beach and come back. But to take these vessels out into the open sea and sail from one island destination to the next is nothing short of extreme.
The Philippine Hobie Challenge is different from other Hobie sailing events in the world because it has a different route each year. The Philippines, after all, has more than 7,100 islands, so why not explore to the hilt. During the weeklong event, participants spend the night in a different location. Past routes include well-known tourist destinations such as Boracay, El Nido, and Subic Bay, but these were usually the end points for the Challenge. In between the start and the finish, the fleet will visit many unspoiled coves, bays, and islands along the way. In 2012, participants sailed from Coron to El Nido, and also visited little-known gems like Pangaraycayan and Manligad Islands. This year, a course was held on the western shore of the provinces of Zambales and Bataan, where participants visited the private island of Hermana Mayor. That was the perfect time for the island will soon be developed into a luxury resort, which will render it inaccessible to common folks. The Philippine Hobie Challenge attracts world champions, such as Mick Butler and Bruce Tardrew, and sisters Jasmine and Natalie Hill of the women’s team. A cumulative time is taken over the different legs of the event, with the winner having registered the shortest time. In the early years, sailing would sometimes go on till nighttime and, in at least
MEMORIES, AHOY!: “What I find most memorable were the waterfalls inside the volcano in Camiguin, the crystal-clear waters of Apo island, being waved goodbye by the entire school in Anda Beach, Bohol, and the greeting of a thousand school kids in Sibuyan Island.” - Andrew Locke, long-time hobie sailor 70 I Mabuhay Magazine I May 2013
Fast Facts WHAT: The Philippine Hobie Challenge is an annual, week-long extreme sailing event divided into five legs that stretches to 250 nautical miles.
HOLD TIGHT: Depending on the wind conditions, a hobie can go as fast as 22.5 knots or 25.9 mph.
one instance, participants unfortunately wrecked their hobies on some reefs. Most sailing events, however, would be over by mid-afternoon.Although it is strictly speaking a race, the best way to describe the character of the Challenge is “friendly.” Competition is fierce on the water and there have been one or two instances when protests were made. But once back on the beach, it’s all smiles as everyone recounts the day’s sailing experience. Less experienced sailors will approach the world champs for advice on how to tune their hobies, or ask for tips on sailing, and the old timers are happy to share what they know. In a way, the Challenge itself is as much a social event as it is a sailing competition. Safety is of prime importance. A certain amount of sailing credentials is needed before one is allowed to
join the tilt. Despite the rescue boats available on the site, sailing in open seas is unpredictable and can be dangerous for newbies. After 13 years, the organizers of the Philippine Hobie Challenge are now feeling the pressure of finding new routes. Several suggestions include sailing the country’s northern waters near Calayan Islands and Ilocos Norte, where the wind and water are known to be strong and wild. Another is around Cebu and its lesser-known coves and beaches. Whatever route is chosen, though, enthusiasts will almost always end up in an unknown beach, at 2 a.m., looking up at the stars and wondering how they’ll ever find their way back to this place on their own. n
WHO: Participants come from all over the world, with a good number coming from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the USA, the United Kingdom, Taiwan. WHERE: Anywhere around the Philippines WHEN: From February to March WHY: It provides enthusiasts with a good mix of challenge and exciting discoveries. HOW: Participants take on the Hobie 16, a twosail catamaran where the two-man crew basically stay on nothing more than a trampoline stretched between the two hulls.
SAFETY ON THE SEAS Find yourself a good program and start from the beginning. For the Philippine Hobie Challenge, each participant is required to have the following gear with them for safety reasons: • Life vest or any form of personal floatation device • Whistle • Signaling mirror • Knife, in case you get tangled in the rigging • Compass (or a GPS) • Strobe light to use as a signaling device in the dark • Radio or a mobile phone in a waterproof case PLUS: A large dose of common sense as overestimating your sailing skills or underestimating the weather conditions can lead to disaster. WALK ON WATER: Stand-up Paddle Boarding is a relaxing alternative to hardcore surfing, letting you take in the scenery while toning your muscles. Photo by Mark Dimalanta
What’s sUP With the Water? After surfing, hiking, and trail riding, MO FRANCISCO tries her hand this time in the leisurely activity of Stand-Up Paddle Boarding.
I
t’s mid afternoon. The noonday’s heat has waned to a pleasant warmth on bare shoulders. The air is still, save for the occasional kiss of a passing breeze. In the middle of a startlingly blue and placid Lake Caliraya, past an open lodge on a hill with a perfectly manicured lawn, are three figures. To the myopic eye, their stance is statuesque as they float toward the horizon. I could write a thousand words and still fall short in my description of how it feels to be out here. We are skimming the lake’s gently rippled surface, our only movement coming from the controlled motions of our arms as we slice through the water like butter with our oars. Only five minutes out on the lake and already I’ve gotten the hang of Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP). Still, that doesn’t mean I’m a paddle-boarding prodigy or anything. It just means that I can do two things at the same time: paddle and stand up, which is what SUP is all about. It’s an activity that incorporates the long board used by surfers and the 72 I Mabuhay Magazine I May 2013
rowing technique of kayakers. The former gives you impeccable balance, while (efficient) paddling will give you exceptional mileage. The lake is so calm that a klutz like me can focus on perfecting my paddling technique. The key is to maintain strong, deep strokes that slice vertically through the water. One hand is at the hilt of the oar, the other grasping the handle at waist level. The former one drives the oar down while the latter pulls it, creating the contrast of force to propel you forward. To control your direction, you alternate sides. Of the sports that I’ve tried, SUP is the first one that’s conducive for meditation. It lets you exercise your core while you enjoy the unique view, which in our case is the delightfully, pine tree-lined, manmade lake of Laguna’s Caliraya. It’s a real strange feeling—to be moving forward on the lake, completely dry save for the puddle of water accumulating at my feet in the concave of my SUP board. It’s probably the closest thing to walking on

water that I’ll ever get to. Ahead of us is SUP instructor Tono Legarda. He perennially calls out words of encouragement back at us as he glides ahead. Tono started SUP boarding in 2008 as an alternative to windsurfing. On days when the wind is scarce, he’d bring out his board of choice—an inflatable Starboard. His venture into SUP boarding has taken him sightseeing through Cebu (Mactan Island, Olango Island), Bohol (Panglao Island, Abatan River), Boracay, and Batangas (Nasugbu, Calatagan, Laiya, Anilao, Taal). But when it comes to teaching friends, family, and new clients, he prefers to SUP here, by the
lake house of Soloviento. Soloviento is quiet, secluded, and gives you the feeling that the infinite stretch of water before you is all yours. It’s the kind of haunt that attracts the alternative water-sport crowd—paddle boarders, kite boarders, windsurfers, and fishing enthusiasts. With the cool weather uphill and the rocky beach below, Soloviento is what you’d get if Baguio and Batangas ever got together and had a baby. As we paddle to a hut half a kilometer from shore, we exchange stories. The great thing about SUP is that you can actually have long conversations with breathtaking scenery as your backdrop. Though the SUP board reminds me of a surfboard, there are several differences. Instead of standing with one foot in front of the other, your feet are together facing the direction you are headed. An inflatable board, it’s way easier to travel with. And the best part is the ride. Compared with surfing, here, you aren’t battling against raging waves, trying relentlessly to get out to where the set swells. On the SUP, you get a long majestic ride without the wipeouts. And after your ride, you can retire to the lake house, order a surprisingly delicious dory fillet with teriyaki sauce (or a pepperoni pizza) and close your eyes. Remind yourself to recall this moment later in the week when work and city life threaten the state of your sanity. n
Getting to Soloviento By car The lake house is a 6-minute drive past the more popular Caliraya Recreation Center and Resort. The place is easy to miss if you don’t pay attention. Turn left at a narrow street after you see the sign of Surf Camp. If you see the resort, Lago de Oro, you’ve missed your turn. By puBlic transportation From Cubao, take an H&M bus to Laguna’s capital Sta. Cruz. After about 2 hours you’ll arrive at Pagsawitan station. Take a jeepney to Lumot/ Pangsanjan, then a 30-minute jeepney ride to Lewin. Again, don’t get off at Caliraya Recreation Center.

LEAP OF FAITH: The Agas-Agas zipline overlooks the country’s tallest bridge underneath of which makes for a great (and free) picnic site. Photo by Gerry Ruiz
TACLOBAN TREATS ANNA GOLEZ takes us to Tacloban, highlighting its new hotels and hotspots.
“I
shall return,” said General Douglas MacArthur, and he fulfilled this promise when he landed with his troops on the shores of Leyte. That pivotal moment in history was nearly 70 years ago, and now Tacloban has emerged as one of the Philippines’ most promising destinations with plenty to offer tourists looking for an easy escape without losing the perks of city life. Among many of Tacloban’s hotels, budget-friendly Zpad Residences (www.zpad.com.ph) is the latest as well as the highest rated Tacloban hotel on TripAdvisor. Zpad is conveniently located near the city’s hotspots, such as the San Juanico Park Golf and Country Club and the San Juanico Bridge, which connects the islands of Leyte and Samar. Another new, more chic hotel is Granda Manor (www.grandamanor.com), right at the heart of Tacloban and a stone’s throw away from the city’s main house of worship, the Sto. Niño Church. Although the hotel only has 11 rooms, Granda Manor can offer a more thorough, hands-on service. Just 15 minutes away from Tacloban by pump boat, is the islet of Sinapdan, located on the tranquil San Juanico Strait. The Sinapdan Island Picnic Grounds (www.facebook.com/Sinapdan.IT) has clear ocean
waters and views of the iconic San Juanico Bridge. At this resort, you may also get a glimpse of the endangered pawikan (sea turtles) and pagi (stingrays) that inhabit the island’s surrounding waters. The Philippines’ first water ski school can be found on the Golden River in Basey, on the adjacent island of Samar. Aside from barefoot water skiing, you can also enjoy wakeboarding, banana boat rides, fly fish rides and other fun ways to get wet at Water Ski Philippines (www.facebook.com/pages/Water-SkiPhilippines/262386527112114). After getting soaked in the sea, why not dry off by flying 292 feet above the ground? The Agas-Agas Bridge, the country’s tallest and straddled between two mountains, houses a zip line that lets you coast through the air head first and arms spread like a modern day superhero. As the sun goes down, unwind at Calle Z, where you can find a selection of 10,000 music titles from their library as well as some straight from the grill grub like fried ribs, lechon kawali (deep-fried pork chunks), and crispy tenga (pig ears). Or cap off the night in style at Patio Victoria, a beachside restaurant where you can sample fresh seafood. n

The Legend of The Camia fLower
nce upon a time in the village of Palanan, Rizal lived a peaceful tribe ruled by Datu Manti. From the village folk he had heard fantastic tales of an incredibly lovely maiden named Medita, who had a nuno (evil spirit) for a lover. Once, hunting alone, Datu Manti saw his maiden beside a stream with nothing but her long hair covering her body. Enamored and dazzled, Manti approached her, but at the sight of him she leaped into the water with her right arm upraised to heaven. Datu Manti grabbed her hand and attempted to pull her back, but she sank out of sight, leaving only her hand. Datu Manti buried the hand in his garden, and soon a little plant grew on the spot which bore pure white fragrant flowers. One day a Spaniard happened to pass by and seeing the flowers, wished to know their name. Datu Manti could not tell him, and pointing instead to the plant, said, “Iyan ang kamay niya” (That is her hand). And the Spaniard, not understanding the dialect, jotted down the flower’s name as camia. And camia it has been called since. n

FIRST SANTACRUZAN: Originally called the Santa Cruz de Mayo, the Santacruzan was said to have been held for the first time in the Philippines in the 1860s, in Malolos, Bulacan. Photos courtesy of Bruce Casanova/Bb. Pilipinas Foundation
May, the Month of Queens The merry month of May is abloom with beauties all dressed up for the much-awaited Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo processions, writes ISABEL L. TEMPLO. Ah, May! As other countries wake up from the gloom of winter, the Philippines celebrates many of its most colorful fiestas, or festivals. But before we get carried away by all the fun and gaiety, keep in mind that a lot of these celebrations are actually deeply rooted in religious beliefs. Take the Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May), which celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, as the “Queen of May.” In churches around the country, people gather in the afternoons to pray the rosary. Parishioners—usually children—line up to offer flowers to the Blessed Mother while singing songs of love and devotion. This month-long celebration is capped by a novena, or prayer repeated for nine successive days, to the Holy Cross, followed by the Santacruzan procession. While some characters (or sagalas) in the Santacruzan are biblical and historical, many are symbolic. 80 I Mabuhay Magazine I May 2013
The order of the procession in itself tells the story of Christianity: the indigenous group, Aetas, at the head of the procession symbolizes pagan natives, while the sagalas at the rear stand for the people’s deepening of the faith. Perhaps because of the many queens involved, the Santacruzan has evolved to gain pageant-like proportions through the years, with beauty queens, models, and celebrities dressed in top designer fashions as the sagalas, walking with strapping escorts under arches decorated with flowers. No wonder it’s come to be known as the “Queen of Philippine Festivals”. Like no other month, May feeds our love for celebration and festivity. Yet it feeds our beliefs, too. After all, the Flores de Mayo and the Santacruzan, two well-loved traditions, have at their core the symbols of our faith: Mary and the Holy Cross of her Son. n
THE STORY OF THE SANTACRUZAN The Santacruzan (roughly, Festival of the Holy Cross) focuses on St. Helena, mother of Roman emperor Constantine the Great, and her search for the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Legend has it that Constantine was led to victory in battle twice by a vision of the Holy Cross. After that, he converted to Christianity and sent his mother to Jerusalem on a crusade to find the True Cross, which according to tradition, happened sometime between 326 and 328 AD.

Ancient Origins FloreS de Mayo The Flores de Mayo tradition goes back to the 16th-century European tradition of May Day, in which statues of the Virgin Mary are decorated with flowers in a symbolic crowning as Queen of Heaven. This tradition is said to go back even further— to pre-Christian times, celebrating Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, as spring begins.
Santacruzan Like the Flores de Mayo, the Santacruzan was introduced to the Philippines by Spain. In Spain, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Mexico, and other Spanish-speaking countries, the Fiesta de las Cruces (“festival of the crosses”) or Cruz de Mayo (“May cross”) is celebrated in May.

A GREAT BALANCING ACT October 2012
It was simply a case of being in the right place at the right time. Katrina Misa and her friend had just traipsed around Cambodia's Beng Mealea temple ruins and were on a tuk-tuk snapping away at the lovely landscape. Then, from out of nowhere, this Khmer family showing excellent balance and dexterity on a motorcycle sidled up beside the tuk-tuk and at exactly the same speed, she aimed her Panasonic Lumix G3 just as the little boy looked straight at her. Serendipitous moments, indeed.

The Americans brought the convenience of fast food meal while other Asian cuisines from the Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese started to emerge as well. Famous Filipino dishes include lechón (whole roasted pig), longganisa (Philippine sausage), tapa (cured beef), torta (omelette), adobo (chicken and/ or pork braised in garlic, vinegar, oil, and soy sauce), kaldereta (meat stewed in tomato sauce), mechado (larded beef in soy and tomato sauce), puchero (beef and plantains in tomato sauce), afritada (chicken and/or pork with vegetables simmered in tomato sauce), kare-kare (oxtail and vegetables cooked in peanut sauce), crispy pata (deepfried pig’s leg), hamonado (pork braised in pineapple sauce), sinigang (meat or seafood in sour broth), pancit (noodles), and lumpia (fresh or fried spring rolls). n

Kunis, and Rachel Weisz. A prequel to the tale we all love, the story follows the journey of how the wizard came to discover the Land of Oz. An imaginative mix of live-action and CGI that pays homage to the iconic images and timeless sense of wonder in the classic, the film captures the magic that comes with the tale. Albeit having been subjected to numerous adaptations in storybooks, TV shows, films, and even on stage, this Disney masterpiece is definitely one that will stand out from the rest. This is, indeed, a great film for the whole family to enjoy!

At the start of the film, Oz works with the circus company “Baum Brothers Circus.” This is a reference to L. Frank Baum, the original author of the Oz series.
>>
Sam Raimi opted to use practical sets in conjunction with computergenerated imagery: physical sets were constructed so the actors could have a visual reference, as opposed to using green-screens for every scene.

To prepare for his role as Oz, James Franco received training with magician Lance Burton.

Originally, this movie was supposed to be Matt Damon’s directorial debut. But due to short time to prepare for the movie and also some creative conflicts, Damon dropped out as the director (but remained as an actor) and Gus Van Sant came aboard to direct. According to a New York Times report, when Promised Land opened at the Southside Mall in Oneonta, New York in January 2013, some moviegoers wore buttons protesting hydraulic fracturing (i.e. fracking), and windows in town displayed signs warning of its possible environmental hazards. Meanwhile, pro-fracking citizens responded with homemade signs stating, “Let’s boost our local economy” and “Support safe drilling and pipelines, jobs.”

Songbird Nina releases her seventh studio album in All Good. Branching out to new landscapes, Nina breaks away from her usual foreign covers and instead focuses on an all-OPM track list for her recent album. With contributions from the masters such as Jimmy Borja, Vehnee Saturno, and Toto Sorioso, Nina shows off her growth as an artist by paying homage to her roots. Radio-hit single “Sa Isang Tingin” is an automatic standout, among others. On the other hand, “Don’t Say Goodbye” skyrocketed to fame after being chosen as the film Secret Affair’s theme song. Nina, although having spent quite a few years in the industry, still proves to be a timeless gem album after album.
