«Hay que educar para que los vigilantes del patrimonio no sean necesarios» Rosa López nació en Sevilla. Con 18 años se marchó a Córdoba a estudiar Historia del Arte. En la ciudad de los Omeyas se especializó en arqueología. Su primer trabajo fue en la Mezquita de Córdoba, Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Tras ella, llegaron otros lugares como el Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos o Madinat al-Zahra. En 2009, se instaló en Fuerteventura y empezó, de nuevo, a reconstruir la historia. Esta vez, la de los mahos. Desde 2017 es la directora arqueológica de la empresa Arenisca. Por delante, Rosa tiene varios proyectos laborales. Todos ellos con un mismo objetivo: seguir la huella de los antiguos pobladores de la isla. ¿Qué sabemos hoy día de los mahos? A través de la arqueología se sabe poco. Tenemos referencias escritas de diferentes autores y de los conquistadores a través de la crónica de la conquista: Le canarien. A través de la arqueología queda mucha investigación por hacer. Sabemos cuestiones muy generales como donde vivían y como eran sus casas. También empezamos a entender cómo se enterraban, pero nos faltan muchas cuestiones concretas. Por ejemplo, cómo se organizaban socialmente y cómo fueron evolucionando las poblaciones que llegaron. Nos encontramos con 900 yacimientos, pero no sabemos cuáles se fundaron antes ni que zonas se ocuparon con posterioridad. Tampoco sabemos si se desarrolló la agricultura o no. Los conquistadores dicen que no existía la agricultura, pero no sabemos qué pasó en las etapas más antiguas. En los últimos años ha trabajado en excavaciones como el Barranco de Los Canarios o Llano del Sombrero, ¿qué han aportado esos trabajos para el estudio de la Prehistoria insular? Es fundamental entender cada excavación como una investigación. En ella son imprescindibles las cronologías. A diferencia de otras islas, Fuerteventura adolece de no tener apenas fechas en sus yacimientos. No sabemos cuándos se poblaron. En Llano del Sombrero se realizaron las primeras dataciones de un poblado que está entre los diez más importantes de la isla , mientras que en el Barranco de Los Canarios pudimos empezar a conocer las prácticas funerarias de los mahos. ¿Cómo ha avanzado el estudio de las prácticas funerarias tras el hallazgo y excavación de cuevas con restos humanos? Tuve la gran suerte de excavar la primera cueva de enterramiento o depósito funerario. El último enteramiento .4

que se había excavado fue el de la cueva de Villaverde en los años setenta. Desde 1979 hasta 2012, que excavamos en el Barranco de Los Canarios, no se había hecho nada de arqueología funeraria en la isla. El Barranco de Los Canarios ofreció muchísimos datos. Nos encontramos cuatro individuos, una cama de piedra donde se iban depositando los muertos, un ajuar funerario y pudimos también empezar a conocer cómo eran las prácticas funerarias. ¿Cómo valora el estado de conservación de los yacimientos de la isla? La conservación es muy desigual. Tenemos yacimientos que solo se conservan a nivel de cimientos y otros que se conservan de manera espectacular. Lo más importante es preservar los que se conservan bien y que no acaben igual que los que están mal conservados. Hay que tomar medidas. Sé que es difícil porque hay muchos, pero creo que deberían hacerse revisiones periódicas y tomar las medidas necesarias para que no se deterioren. ¿Está concienciada la población en la importancia de conservar el patrimonio arqueológico? Aún falta mucho por hacer en todos los ámbitos desde los colegios hasta los adultos. Solo se conseguirá remando todos en la misma dirección y apostando por la educación para que los vigilantes no sean necesarios si no que todos custodiemos el patrimonio. Se pueden hacer muchísimas cosas desde visitas a yacimientos, charlas, actividades para familias, publicaciones didácticas, exposiciones sobre arqueología... muchas cosas para que el mensaje vaya calando poco a poco. ¿Qué supone la cueva de Villaverde y su estudio para la prehistoria de Fuerteventura? La cueva de Villaverde permite poder estudiar la historia de Fuerteventura en un solo yacimiento, ya que estuvo poblado durante un largo periodo de tiempo desde el siglo III al IX. Tiene una gran ventaja como yacimiento respecto a otros y es que contamos con una información de la que partimos. Podemos sacar mucha información de la forma de vida y también cenizas con carbones con los que se puede reconstruir el paleoclima. Es un yacimiento muy completo. ¿Qué proyectos plantea para la cueva? Hay muchas maneras de hacerla visitable. En estas fases iniciales se podrá simplemente visitando las excavaciones, pero según vayamos avanzando iremos adaptando el yacimiento para que se pueda, cada vez, visitar más cosas. Lo ideal también sería tener un pequeño centro

de interpretación donde se puedan ver los materiales y encontrar información de la cueva. ¿Qué yacimiento le gustaría excavar en la isla? Creo que es necesario seguir abordando el ámbito funerario a través de las cistas y túmulos para ir descartando hipótesis. También hay un yacimiento que me parece de los más espectaculares de Fuerteventura y con un nivel de conservación maravilloso y es la Iglesia de los Majos. Excavar eso sería un sueño. ¿Cómo arqueóloga que le gustaría encontrar en la isla? Desde que me vine a Fuerteventura siento que tengo una deuda con la isla porque aquí he tenido la oportunidad de excavar en yacimientos en lugares con paisajes maravillosos después de haber estado excavando en una ciudad. Fuerteventura ha sido empezar mi carrera de nuevo. He podido abordar una cultura diferente y también poder excavar, por ejemplo, mientras veo el mar y eso me parece un regalo. Me siento en la obligación de aportar todo lo que pueda, al nivel de datos científicos, a la historia de Fuerteventura. Más que encontrar algo lo que quiero es poder ofrecer. Nos hemos centrado en el estudio del mundo aborigen, pero apenas sabemos nada de la época postconquista, ¿qué vestigios cree que con su excavación podríamos conocer de esa etapa? No se ha hecho nada a nivel de arqueología en la etapa medieval. Betancuria es un sitio ideal para conjugar la arqueología tradicional con la arqueología de la arquitectura y la rehabilitación de edificios históricos. Betancuria se podría abordar desde un punto de vista arqueológico. Tampoco se ha hecho nada con la cerámica medieval. Ni siquiera se recoge del campo y se desprecia. Es interesante poder describir esos momentos de contacto entre los aborígenes y la nueva población. ¿Qué supondrá el yacimiento de Lobos en el futuro para Fuerteventura? Lobos abre una puerta y amplía el espectro cronológico y la historia de Fuerteventura. Es una excavación con unos datos interesantísimos y habrá que ir investigando también en el territorio de Fuerteventura. Estoy segura que en toda la costa norte de Fuerteventura hay más yacimientos como Lobos.

Text: Eloy Vera «We must educate so that cultural heritage monitors won’t be necessary» Rosa López was born in Sevilla. Being 18 she moved to Córdoba to study History of Art. She specialised in Archaeology in the Omayyads’ city. Her first job was in the Mosque of Cordoba, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. After that, other works followed like that in Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos or in Madinat al-Zahra. In 2009, she settled in Fuerteventura and began, again, to refurbish history, this time that of the mahos. Since 2017 she has been a manager of the company Arenisca. Rosa has several work projects ahead, all of them with the same aim: to follow the trail of the ancient inhabitants of the island. What do we know about the mahos nowadays? Little is known through archaeology. We have written records by different authors and by the conquerors through the chronicle of the conquest: Le canarien. Through archaeology, much research remains to be done. We know about very general questions: where they lived and how their houses were. We also started to understand how they were buried, but we lack many concrete details, for example, how they organized themselves socially and how the populations that arrived were evolving. We find 900 sites, but we don’t know which ones were founded before or which areas were occupied later. We don’t know either whether or not agriculture was developed. The conquerors say that agriculture don’t exist, but we don’t know what happened in the earliest stages. In the last years you’ve worked in diggings like el Barranco de Los Canarios or Llano del Sombrero, What have these works meant to the study of pre-history of the island? It’s essential to understand this digging as a research work. Chronologies are basic then. Fuerteventura suffers from not having dates in many of its sites. We don’t know when they were populated. In Llano del Sombrero a people, among the ten more important ones in the island, was detected for the first time, while in El Barranco de Los Canarios we could begin to know about the funerary practices of the mahos. How has the study of burial practices developed after the findings and excavations of caves with human remains? I was very fortunate to excavate the first burial cave or site here. The last burial site that had been excavated was that of the cave of Villaverde in the seventies. From 1979 to 2012, which we excavated in the Barranco de Los Canarios, nothing had been done regarding funerary archaeology on the island. The Barranco de Los Canarios offered a lot of data. We found four individuals, a stone bed where the dead were being deposited, a funeral trousseau and we could also begin to know what the funeral practices were like. How do you consider the state of preservation of the sites on the island? The preservation is very unequal. We have sites where only the foundations remain and there are some others that are surprisingly preserved. The most important thing is to preserve those that are still in good conditions so they do not end up the same as those that are poorly preserved. We must take action. I know it’s difficult because there are many, but I think that periodic reviews should be made and take the necessary measures so that they do not deteriorate.

Is the population aware of the importance of preserving the archaeological heritage? There is still much to be done in every scope, from schools to adults. It will only be achieved if we work every day in the same direction and insist on education so that heritage monitors be not necessary. There are many things we can do, from visits to the sites, speeches, activities for the families, didactic publications, archaeological exhibitions… quite a lot of things so that the message be passed on little by little. What does the cave in Villaverde and its study mean for the prehistory of Fuerteventura? The cave of Villaverde allows you to study the history of Fuerteventura in a single site, as it was populated for a long period of time, from the III to the IX century. It has a great advantage as a site with respect to others and this is that we have an information from which we depart. We can obtain a lot of information about their way of life and also ash with coals with which the paleoclimate can be reconstructed. It’s a very complete site. What projects do you have for the cave? There are many ways to make it a place to be visited. In these early stages you’ll only be able to visit the excavations, but as we progress we’ll be adapting the site so you can visit more and more things. It’d be ideal to have a small interpretation centre where you can see the materials and find information about the cave. What site would you like to excavate in the island? I think it’s necessary to keep working within the funeral scope through cists and burial mounds so as to discard hypotheses. There’s also a site that looks one of the most spectacular in Fuerteventura and wonderfully preserved, and this is the church of Los Majos. Excavating it would be a dream. As an archaeologist, what would you like to find in the island? Since I arrived in Fuerteventura I’ve felt I’m in debt with this island because here I’ve had the chance to excavate sites surrounded by a wonderful landscape after having been excavating in the city. Fuerteventura has meant starting off my career path again. I’ve had the chance to deal with a different culture and excavate while watching the sea, which is like a present. I feel obliged to contribute as much as I know regarding scientific data to the history of Fuerteventura. More than finding something, what I want it to be able to offer. We have focused on the study of the aboriginal world, but we hardly know anything about the post conquest period, what vestiges of that stage do you think we could get to know through your excavations? Nothing has been done regarding archaeology in the medieval stage. Betancuria is an ideal place to make traditional archaeology, the archaeology of architecture and the refurbishment of historical buildings meet. Betancuria could be dealt with from an archaeological point of view. Nothing has been done about medieval ceramics either. It isn’t even picked up form the soil and it’s been despised. It’s interesting to describe these moments of contact between the natives and the new population. What will the site in Lobos mean for the future of Fuerteventura? Lobos opens a door and broadens the chronological spectre and that of the history of Fuerteventura. It’s an excavation with extremely interesting data and the soil in Fuerteventura must also be researched. I’m positive that in the whole of the northern coast of Fuerteventura there are more sites like the one in Lobos.

Este mes de noviembre se pone en marcha, coincidiendo con la nueva temporada de la programación de invierno, un Centro de Tecnificación de Deportes Acuáticos en la Escuela Náutica Municipal de Corralejo; se trata de un nuevo proyecto deportivo, iniciativa del Club Onexe y gracias a la colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, que ofrece una formación más específica a los deportistas más destacados del club que quieran participar en competiciones de alto nivel, mejorando así las posibilidades de entrenamiento de la cantera majorera de deportes de agua.

UN SUEÑO HECHO REALIDAD QUE CULMINA CON LA CREACION DEL CENTRO DE TECNIFICACIÓN DE DEPORTES ACUÁTICOS EN CORRALEJO

El Club Onexe, ubicado en el Puerto de Corralejo, con sede en la Escuela Náutica Municipal, ha apostado desde sus inicios en 2012 por deportes de mar, promoviendo así la cultura deportiva entre los más jóvenes, siempre respetando el medio ambiente y en sintonía con este increíble paisaje que nos rodea. Y es que nuestras costas son el escenario perfecto para la práctica de estos deportes, con la preciosa Isla de Lobos siempre en el horizonte. El Club Onexe fue, y es, una iniciativa de Nayra Martínez (Directora del Centro, Licenciada en CAFD con especialidad en Vela, Entrenadora de Surf Nivel 2 y Nivel 1 en piragüismo), quien siempre ha soñado con la creación de este Centro de Tecnificación de deportes acuáticos que por fin se inaugura este mes en Corralejo con la incorporación de entrenadores de alto nivel. «Cuando empecé este proyecto ya veía el potencial y soñé con el día de llegar a realizar un Centro de Tecnificación. La vida me ha rodeado de grandes deportistas y amigos y gracias a ellos hoy se está haciendo realidad.

No me quiero olvidar que no sólo es un centro para deportistas sino también un centro de ocio y familiar para todas las edades y niveles. Los padres de estos niños, por ejemplo, también forman parte de este proyecto… conseguir que una madre se suba a una tabla de SUP pensando que sería incapaz y una locura y acabe viniendo a entrar todo el año, me genera la misma satisfacción que ver la evolución deportiva de un niño que se clasifica para ir a un mundial… simplemente abrimos una puerta más para los jóvenes que puedan proyectarse deportivamente a nivel internacional». Nayra Martínez Onexe lleva desde sus inicios en la Escuela Náutica ofertando un amplio abanico de actividades, Vela, Windsurf, Piragüismo y Stand Up Paddle), pronto incluirán también Surf, Bodyboard y Salvamento y Socorrismo. Cuentan actualmente con técnicos de alto nivel, como Esperanza Barreras (Pre Olímpica en Vela y Actual Campeona de España de SUP Sprint), Mauricio Kaminski (Olímpico en Canoa), Eunate Aguirre (Campeona del Mundo de Bodyboard), Javi Cozar (preparador físico) así como deportistas de renombrado

prestigio como Iballa Ruano Moreno, Sonni Hönscheid, Stephane Etienne, Nicole Boronat y Pablo Valencia . En estos seis años de recorrido Onexe ha apostado por la promoción de los deportes acuáticos, seis años entrenando a la cantera majorera que han dado un buenísimo fruto en este último Campeonato de España, realizado en Baiona (Galicia) en septiembre, con 15 podiums entre las diferentes categorías. El Club, con mucha ilusión y trabajo a sus espaldas, se desplazó con más de una treintena de deportistas majoreros, siendo la cantera más destacada a nivel nacional, con 4 campeones de España. Un claro ejemplo del trabajo realizado éstos últimos 6 años por este Club es Benjamin Moreham (17 años), que inició su carrera deportiva en Onexe y que ha conseguido clasificarse para el próximo Mundial ISA (International Surfing Association) que se disputará en China el próximo mes de Noviembre. Paralelamente, Iballa Ruano (Deportista profesional 10 Veces Campeona del Mundo de Windsurf y Entrenadora de Surf Nivel 2), la deportista canaria más laureada a nivel internacional, también parte de esta gran familia Onexe, conseguía proclamarse ganadora en Estados Unidos en

Esta pasión, esta perseverancia, estos grandes deportistas majoreros que llevan años entrenando con ilusión en Onexe, son el motor que ha conseguido que Óscar Ruíz, (Licenciado en CAFD, Seleccionador Nacional y técnico de la Federación Española de Surf, formador de técnicos deportivos y deportista de alto nivel), atraído por el movimiento de la cantera canaria y el potencial de las condiciones del centro, se haya decidido a formar parte de este Centro de Tecnificación como Director Técnico.

porte Base, Ocio y Tiempo Libre, Tecnificación Deportiva y Alto Rendimiento, Formación de Formadores y Deporte Adaptado para personas con algún tipo de discapacidad. Este Centro de Tecnificación de Deportes Acuáticos inicia su andadura con la primera concentración en la isla del Equipo Nacional de SUP Surf y Paddle Board con el objetivo de prepararse de cara al Mundial de China . Además, desde Julio de 2018 trabajan con la Asociación Play and Train en jornadas intensivas de surf adaptado por las que ya han pasado más de 40 personas con diferentes discapacidades, empezando ya a trabajar con niños y adultos residentes para su inclusión en los diferentes deportes de mar. El ímpetu de Onexe por difundir su pasión durante éstos últimos 6 años, le ha llevado a organizar varios eventos deportivos sobresalientes, llegando éste año ha ganarse el merecido prestigio de la Federación Española de Surf que le ha otorgado la organización de los dos Campeonatos de España de SUP Surf y Beach Race, que se celebrarán del 6 al 9 de diciembre conjuntamente con el Fuerteventura SUP Challenge y Lifesaving de Salvamento y Socorrismo. Starboard y Severne Sails, las dos marcas líderes en Stand UP Paddle y Windsurf, visitaron las instalaciones de la Escuela Náutica de Corralejo para dar el visto bueno del actual Test Center que contará con material de última generación tanto de Stand Up Paddle como de Windsurf. En representación de Starboard, el español Ian Varderi y en representación de Severne Sails, el dueño y creador de la marca, el australiano Ben Severne se acercaron a las instalaciones para conocer a la nueva cantera majorera. Desde Macaronesia nos sentimos orgullosos de contar con tan buenos deportistas en una isla no muy poblada pero rodeada de un espectacular mar, que permite a estos jóvenes cosechar premios y evolucionar en sus deportes favoritos. Gracias a Onexe por no dejar nunca de lado sus sueños y larga vida a este proyecto, Centro de Tecnificación de Deportes Acuáticos de Corralejo. Las puertas del club Onexe están abiertas para todas aquellas personas, jóvenes y adultos, que quieran aprender o perfeccionar cualquiera de los deportes que ofertan.

ONEXE A DREAM COME TRUE THAT CULMINATES WITH THE CREATION OF A WATER SPORT HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTRE IN CORRALEJO

This month of November, a new water sports High Performance Centre will open in the Municipal Nautical School in Corralejo; it’s a new sport project, an initiative by Onexe Club and thanks to the collaboration of the Town hall in La Oliva, which offers a more specific training to the most outstanding athletes in the club wanting to take part in high-level competitions, thus enhancing the potential of the water sport teams in Fuerteventura. The Onexe Club, located in Corralejo Harbour, with headoffices in the Municipal Nautical School, has supported sea water sports since its early stages in 2012, thus promoting the sport culture among the youngest, always respecting the environment and the harmony with this wonderful landscape surrounding us. And this is because our coastline is the perfect stage for the practice of these sports, with the precious Lobos Island always in the horizon. Onexe club was, and is, an initiative by Nayra Martínez (manager of the centre, a Physical Education graduate with a major in Sail, a level 2 surf instructor and level 1 in canoeing), who has always dreamt of the creation of this Water Sports High Performance Centre that will be inaugurated this current month in Corralejo with the incorporation of new high performance instructors. «When I started this project I was aware of its potential and I dreamt of setting up, one day, a High Performance Centre. Life has surrounded me of great athletes and friends and thanks to them my dream is becoming true. I won’t forget this isn’t just a High Performance Centre, but a leisure family centre for all ages and levels. These children’s parents, for example, also take part in this projects. Getting one mother stand up on a SUP board thinking she would never be able to do that (apart from being crazy) and see how that mother keeps coming the whole year gives me the same satisfaction as seeing the evolution of a child who has been classified to go to the world championship…. At present, they have High Performance technicians, like Esperanza Barreras (Sail pre-Olympic and current SUP Sprint Spanish Champion), Mauricio Kaminski (Canoeing Olympic), Eunate Aguirre (Bodyboard World Champion), Javi Cozar (Phycical trainer) and renowned athletes such as Iballa Ruano, Sonni Hönscheid, Stephan Etienne, Nicole Boronat and Pablo Valencia. In these six years of experience Onexe has been committed to promoting water sports, six years training the team of Fuerteventura, which has got great results in the last Spain Championship, carried out in September in Baiona (Galicia), achieving 15 medals among the different categories. The Club, which went there with great excitement after having worked so hard, with more than thirty «majorero» athletes, was the most outstanding team at a national level, with 4 Spanish champions. Benjamín Moreham (17 years old) is an example of their work in the last 6 years, as he started his sport career in Onexe and has been able to classify for the next ISA World Championship (International Surfing Association), which will take place in China next November. At the same time, Iballa Ruano ,professional athlete and a tentime World Windsurf Champion and Surf instructor level 2 and the most internationally awarded athlete in the Canary Islands, also a part of this great Onexe family, managed to become a champion in USA in the first event of the World SUP Circuit (APP World Tour), thus becoming the first Spanish athlete to have an international SUP Surf award. «In Fuerteventura we have the perfect conditions to train all year round. The high performance centre is essential, and a great opportunity for current and future professionals in the sport of the Stand Up Paddle, to improve in this sport in a little time». This Water Sports High Performance Centre debuts with the first gathering in the Island of the SUP Surf and Paddle Board National Teams with the aim of training for the China World Championship. Besides, last July 2018 they were working with the Association Play and Train in Intensive Adapted Surf Days, where over 40 people with different disabilities have already taken part. They started to work with resident children and adults to include them in different water sports. The energy by Onexe to spread their passion during these last six years has taken them to organize several outstanding sport events, coming to gain this year the deserved prestige by the Spanish Surf Federation that has entrusted them the organization of two SUP Surf and Beach Race Spanish Championships, which will be celebrated from 6th to 9th December together with Fuerteventura SUP Challenge and Rescue and Lifesaving

LEADER WINDSURF AND STAND PADDLE BRANDS SUPPORT THE HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTRE IN THE NAUTICAL SCHOOL IN CORRALEJO. Starboard and Severne Sails, the two leader Stand UP Paddle and Windsurf brands, visited the installations of the Nautical School in Corralejo to give their agreement to the current Test Centre that will have the latest technology in Stand Paddle and Windsurf equipment. Representing Starboard, the Spanish Ian Varderi and representing Severne Sails, the owner and creator of the brand, the Australian Ben Severne, popped in the installations to meet the new Fuerteventura team. From Macaronesia we feel proud to have such great athletes in a sparsely populated island but surrounded by a spectacular sea, which allows these youngsters to gather prizes and evolve in their favourite sports. Esta vez hablaremos de la experiencia tras haber participado en el voluntariado de conservación e investigación de tortugas marinas en la isla de Boa Vista, Cabo Verde. La ONG Cabo Verde Natura 2000, que cumple 20 años, es la más longeva en el trabajo con tortugas marinas en la isla de Boa Vista. Realizan una importantísima labor de conservación de la población de tortuga boba (Caretta caretta). Se trata de la tercera población reproductora más grande del mundo, tras el Golfo de México y Omán, pero también la más amenazada. La densidad de tortugas es muy alta pero en un espacio muy reducido como es una isla, presenta numerosas amenazas que comentaremos más adelante. Si la población de Boa Vista se viera afectada, no existiría una población reproductora estable en el Atlántico oriental. Es por ello que surge en 2006 el proyecto de reintroducción de la tortuga boba en Fuerteventura (Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Gobierno de Cabo Verde, ULPGC y Avanfuer entre otros), como apoyo en esta parte del océano atlántico a la población de Cabo Verde, siendo ésta la población donante. Una muy pequeña parte de los huevos fueron traslocados a playas del sur de Fuerteventura (Cofete) que cumplen con las características necesarias para la reintroducción. Una gran parte del trabajo de campo, toma de datos y voluntariado, fue desarrollada por Asociación Avanfuer, que surgió con este propósito. Durante septiembre de 2018 dos voluntarios, María Rodríguez González, y el que escribe, ambos biólogos marinos, hemos participado en el campamento de Porto Ferreira gracias a un convenio entre AVANFUER y Binter. Durante la experiencia hemos participado en las tareas de toma de datos con hembras nidificantes, seguimiento de nidos y de rastros, etc. Estamos sorprendidos con la cantidad de obstáculos a los que se enfrentan las tortugas nada más nacer: cada día a los cuervos (Corvus ruficollis), distinto al de Canarias, cangrejos fantasmas (Ocypode sp.), alteración del territorio, peces carnívoros y a la acción humana. Esta última es especialmente patente a través de la basura marina y la contaminación por plásticos. La estima calcula que sólo una de cada mil tortugas llega a la edad adulta. Pero por otro lado, estamos sorprendidos con la resistencia de estos animales, son auténticos equipos blindados que llevan en el planeta desde el jurásico sin apenas cambios. Nosotros sólo podemos felicitar a Cabo Verde Natura 2000 por la gran labor de investigación que realizan y darles las gracias, junto a AVANFUER y Binter.

This time we’ll speak about the experience after having taken part in the volunteer work of preserving and looking into the marine turtles in the island of Boa Vista, Cap Vert. Cabo Verde Natura 2000 NGO, which is turning 20, is the oldest in the work on marine turtles in Boa Vista Island. They carry out a very important task to preserve the loggerhead turtles’ (Caretta caretta) population. It’s all about the third biggest breeding population in the world, after the Mexico and Oman Gulfs, but also the most threatened one. The population density is very high, but in a very reduced space such as the island is, it presents several threats that we’ll comment on later on. If the population in Boa Vista were to be affected, it wouldn’t exist any other settled breeding population in the Oriental Atlantic. This is why the project 2006 arises, with the reintroduction of the loggerhead turtle in Fuerteventura (Fuerteventura Council, Cap Vert Government, ULPGC and Avanfuer among others), as a support to Cape Vert population in this part of the Atlantic Ocean, this being the donor population. A very little part of the eggs were moved to the beaches in the South of Fuerteventura (Cofete), which meets the necessary requirements for the reintroduction. A great deal of the work on the land, taking of data and volunteer work was developed by Avanfuer Association, who emerged with this purpose. During September 2018 two volunteers, Maria Rodríguez González and myself, both of us marine biologists, have taken part in the camp of Porto Ferreira thanks to the deal between AVANFUER and Binter. During this experience we have contributed to the tasks of taking data with female breeding specimens, follow up of nests and trails etc. We are surprised about how many obstacles the turtles have to face as soon as they’re born: every day, the crows (corvus ruficollis), different to the one in the Canary Islands, the ghost crabs (Ocydope sp.), land disturbances, carnivorous fish and the human action. The latter is specially patent through the marine waste and pollution due to plastic waste. It’s estimated that just one out of one thousand turtles reaches adulthood. However, on the other hand, we’re astonished about the resilience of these animals. They’re authentic shielded equipments who have been in the planet since the Jurassic era, hardly unchanged. We can only congratulate the team in Cabo Verde Natura 2000 for the great research work they’re carrying out and thank them, together with AVANFUER and Binter.

Cada uno de nosotros ya tiene una idea preconcebida de lo que significa ser feliz; para mí, ser feliz es estar tranquila, en paz conmigo misma, relajada, y sobre todo, presente. Últimamente he estado sumergida en un ambiente intenso. Cuando eso me pasa, empiezo a irritarme con facilidad, todo me molesta y no consigo avanzar en lo que verdaderamente me importa. ¿Te suena de algo? Lo primero que hago en esos momentos, es un análisis de situación, me pregunto ¿a qué le estoy dedicando mi tiempo? ¿qué estoy viendo por la tele y por las redes? ¿qué libros estoy leyendo? ¿con qué gente me estoy codeando? Para mi sorpresa, casi siempre descubro que he cogido el «virus». Este fenómeno del que te hablo es bastante común y se denomina «Contagio Emocional». Se trata, de nuestra habilidad innata de absorber la energía de aquello a lo que le estamos prestando atención. A veces, no nos damos ni cuenta, simplemente nos sumergimos en ese bucle y empezamos a dar vueltas como si tuviese que ser así. Si al igual que yo, a veces te ves inmerso en una realidad poco placentera que absorbe toda tu energía y te hace sucumbir en el conformismo... ¿qué te parecen estos dos ejercicios para tu toma de conciencia?: ACTIVIDAD 1 Primero, intenta rellenar La Rueda de la Vida dándole una puntuación real de 0 a 10, según como te sientes ante cada uno de los 8 aspectos que hacen que permanezcamos en equilibrio. Si ves la necesidad de cambiar un concepto por otro que para ti sea más importante, táchalo y escribe encima tu nuevo concepto. Los puntos a analizar son: el amor, el ocio o la diversión, tu casa u hogar, tu trabajo, tu desarrollo personal o crecimiento, el dinero con el que cuentas, tu estado físico y de salud y tu familia y amigos. Una vez hayas terminado de puntuar todas tus facetas, une los puntos para ver que forma tiene tu rueda. A partir de ahí, fíjate en una o dos de tus facetas con baja puntuación y ¡vamos a intentar cambiarla! ¿Cómo? Ahí entra la segunda actividad.

ACTIVIDAD 2 Para elaborar este ejercicio, que te va a ayudar a darle una vuelta a tu resultado, necesitas hacerte con tu primera hora de la mañana. Es muy sencillo, vamos a dividir 1 hora en 3 partes iguales de 20 minutos. 1. En los primeros 20 minutos vamos a hacer algo de ejercicio. Lo que tú quieras: caminar, saltar, correr, nadar, pesas... (Gracias al ejercicio conseguirás producir endorfinas, las cuales producen en nuestro cerebro unas sensaciones muy placenteras). 2. En los siguientes 20 minutos vamos a investigar sobre el tema que queremos mejorar. Ej.: Si mi trabajo no me gusta y lo he puntuado con un 3. Voy a dedicar 20 minutos cada mañana a hacer un buen CV, a buscar nuevas ofertas de trabajo, presentar mi candidatura, etc. 3. En los últimos 20 minutos de tu hora, vas a relajarte, crear una lista de cosas por las que te sientas agradecido y a visualizar el día que se te presenta, tal y como quieres que ocurra. WHAT CAN BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR

Each one of us has a preconceived idea of what being happy means; for me, being happy is feeling calm, being at peace with myself, relaxed and, above everything, being present. Lately I’ve been immersing myself in an intense environment. When this happens, I start to get irritated easily, everything bothers me and I’m not able to progress in what is really important to me. Sounds familiar to you? The first thing I do in these moments is analysing the situation. I ask myself: what am I giving my time to? What am I seeing on social media and television? What books am I reading? Who am I hanging out with? To my surprise, I almost always realize that I contracted the «virus». This phenomenon I am talking about is quite common and it is known as «Emotional Contagion». It is our innate ability to absorb the energy of what we are turning our attention to. Sometimes we do not even realize it, we just get caught up in this loop and we start spinning around it as if it has to be like that. As it happens to me, if sometimes you feel you are immersed in an unpleasant situation that is sapping your energy and makes you succumb to conformism… what do you think about these two exercises to raise your awareness?

ACTIVITY 1 First of all, try to fill in this Wheel of Life by giving a real score from 1 to 10 according to the way you feel in relation to each of the 8 aspects that keep us balanced. If you think you need to change one concept for another that you believe it is more important, cross it out and write your new one on it. The points to be analysed are: romance, fun or recreation, physical environment, carrier, personal development or growth, the finances you count on, health, and your family and friends. Once you finish rating every aspects, connect the points to see which shape your wheel has. Starting from that, focus on one or two of the aspects with low scores and let’s try to change them! How? That’s the second activity.

ACTIVITY 2 To do this exercise, which will help you change your result, you need to gain control of the first hour of your morning. It’s very easy, let’s divide 1 hour into 3 equal parts of 20 minutes. 1. In the first 20 minutes let’s exercise a bit. Do whatever you prefer: walking, jumping, running, swimming, weight training… (Thanks to exercising you produce endorphins, responsible for very pleasant sensations in our brain). 2. In the next 20 minutes, dig into the aspect that needs to be improved. For example: if I don’t like my job and I rated it a 3, every morning I’m going to spend 20 minutes writing a good CV, searching new job offers, applying for them, etc. 3. In the last 20 minutes of your hour, relax and make a list of the things you feel grateful for and visualize the day you’ll have, exactly the way you want it to be.

ABOUT ELENA H. GHAZALE Elena H. Ghazale graduated in International Commerce and Marketing, and in Protocol and Institutional Relations. She has been living in Fuerteventura for several years now, but she was born in Gran Canaria during the age of the boom of the 80s, that inspired her passion for business and travels. After returning to Spain in 2010, she decided to start her advanced studies on human brain and thought, getting a Master’s degree in Executive Coaching and kept on training with the leading exponents in this field, such as Tony Robbins, Bob Proctor and Lorrie MacGilvray. Tarta de Queso de Cabra Ahumada RECETA DE ISRAEL FRANCO ZUBIAGA, Chef de La Bodeguita de Corralejo

RECIPE BY ISRAEL FRANCO ZUBIAGA Chef in La Bodeguita de Corralejo INGREDIENTS (4 people): • 3 eggs • 15 g flour • 120 g sugar • 375 ml cream • 125 g smoked goat cheese • 250 g cheese cream

INGREDIENTES (para 4 pesonas) • 3 huevos • 15 g de harina • 120 g de azúcar • 375 ml de nata • 125 g de queso de cabra ahumado • 250 g de queso crema

ELABORACIÓN: Separamos 125 ml de nata y lo ponemos en un cazo o cazuela al fuego, no hace falta que hierva. Cortamos el queso de cabra ahumado en trozos pequeños y lo añadimos a la nata mientras la mantenemos en el fuego, dejamos reposar la mezcla unos 10 minutos, pasado ese tiempo trituramos y dejamos atemperar. Con ayuda de una varilla mezclamos la nata restante (250 ml) con el queso crema, esta vez en frío. Por otra lado, con ayuda de una varilla mezclamos la harina, el azúcar y los huevos. Juntamos las dos mezclas de queso que anteriormente .18

hemos preparado y la añadimos sobre la otra mezcla (harina, azúcar y huevos). Unificamos el conjunto y lo pasamos por un colador, debe quedar una masa lisa y homogénea. Precalentamos el horno a 180Cº mientras dejamos reposar la mezcla media hora, pasado ese tiempo horneamos durante 34 minutos. Una vez horneado, dejaremos la tarta reposando en el frigorífico un mínimo de 8 horas. NOTAS: Como acompañamiento podemos utilizar cualquier mermelada o confitura.

ELABORATION: Set aside 125 ml cream and pour in a pot on the heat, it doesn’t have to boil. We chop the smoked goat cheese and we add it to the cream while on the heat. We let it stand for about 10’. Then, we mix it and let it cool down. With the help of a hand mixer we blend the rest of the cream (250ml) with cheese cream, this time cold. On the other side, we mix the flour, sugar and eggs. We blend the two cheese mixtures and pour it on this last mixture (flour, sugar, eggs). Now we unify everything and strain it. The dough must be smooth and homogeneous. We pre-heat the oven at 180º while letting the dough stand for half an hour. Then we bake it for 34 minutes. Once baked, we let the cake cool down and we keep in the fridge for at least 8 hours. NOTES: As decoration, we can use any marmalade or jam.

Cuando se comete un atentado contra el sentido común, la naturaleza o el espacio público, en Lanzarote es común proferir un «si César levantara la cabeza…» acompañado de un suspirito o de una risa seca. El 24 de abril de 2019 César Manrique quizás habría cumplido cien años si su vida no hubiese acabado abruptamente en un accidente de tráfico en la rotonda de Tahiche donde hoy gira una escultura metálica de esferas y cazoletas para gozo del omnipresente viento conejero.

En los años 80 constató que su miedo a una «avalancha turística» estaba fundado y escribió un manifiesto que tituló sin medias tintas «Lanzarote se está muriendo». En él describía un estado de total «insensibilidad» y de «torpe venta al por mayor» de una isla con un paisaje que tenía una belleza tan singular como frágil.

En 1973 la Sociedad Torrelavega de Arrecife, en cuya junta directiva estuvo César unos años y donde se habían impartido clases de alfabetización durante la posguerra, organizó uno de los primeros encuentros de carácter ecologista. Ahí estuvo César Manrique.

A César se le atacó y se le mitificó, dicen que a partes iguales. Su temperamento y su prestigio internacional prevalecieron y restaron protagonismo a un equipo de artistas y técnicos que amaban la isla de la misma impetuosa manera que él y que trabajaron —aportando ideas, herramientas y horas extra— para hacer realidad el sueño colectivo de unos Centros de Arte Cultura y Turismo de Lanzarote, que nacieron para ser espacios de vanguardia, cultura y divulgación de un patrimonio universal.

Su ideario estético está basado en dos conceptos que en una isla como Lanzarote están trabados sin remedio, formando una sola cosa: el arte y la naturaleza. César fue un activista medioambiental y un defensor de la belleza pública. No transigía con «los mamotretos» que empezaron a construirse en la costa de Lanzarote «sin la más mínima responsabilidad de estilo». Los definía como un ejemplo de «una arquitectura fascista que ni el propio Mussolini hubiera permitido». .20

Quince años más tarde, César participó en las protestas que convocó la asociación cultural y ecologista El Guincho para paralizar la construcción de una urbanización en la playa de Los Pocillos. El colectivo reivindicaba el dominio público de la playa. When there is an attack against common sense, nature or public property, in Lanzarote people usually say «If César came to life again...» accompanied by a sigh or a «ha». On April 24th 2019 César Manrique might have become 100 if his life hadn’t been unexpectedly cut by a road accident in Tahiche roundabout, where there is today a metal structure of spheres and bowls for the amusement of the always present «conejero» wind.

Manrique establecía las lindes del sentido común y llamaba irresponsable a quien hacía méritos para serlo. Más allá de la arquitectura inédita o de su contribución al desarrollo de Lanzarote, muchos recuerdan al César que le negó a su padre el gusto de verlo arquitecto. El César que trabajaba en equipo y que hizo lo que quiso, movido por la pasión y la máxima de no engañarse a sí mismo. Ya lo dejo escrito: »Todo se puede corregir. Depende del entusiasmo, de tener una verdad entre las manos y una valiente y honrada decisión».

There he described a state of total «insensitivity» and «hopeless wholesaling» of an island with a singularly beautiful as well as fragile landscape. In 1973 the Society Torrelavega of Arrecife, to whose board of directors César belonged for some years and where literacy lessons had been taught during the post-war period, organised the first ecological gatherings. César Manrique was there. Fifteen years later, César took part in the outcry called by the cultural and ecology association, El Guincho, to stop the building of an estate on «Los Pocillos» beach. The demonstrators claimed the public property of the beach. The works promoter sued them for damages.

Manrique established the boundaries of common sense and called irresponsible to anyone doing anything to deserve it. Beyond unpublished architecture and his contribution to the development of Lanzarote, many remember that César who contravened his father’s wish to see him become an architect. That César who worked in team and did what he wanted to, moved by the passion and his key principle of not deceiving himself. He wrote down «Everything can be changed. It all depends on your excitement, on having the truth with you and on making a brave and honest decision».

«We don’t have agriculture anymore; fishing doesn’t work, there isn’t any water and, the only thing that could work, with a good panning, tourism, is where the biggest shitloads are found». This is how César described the situation in Lanzarote in the 80’s, accusing public representatives of being responsible of the «developmental drift» of the island, which meant bread for today and hunger for tomorrow. César was said to be equally attacked and mystified. His temper and international prestige prevailed and overshadowed a team of artists and technicians that loved the island as deeply as he did and who worked – contributing ideas, tools and extra hours – to make their collective dream come true, Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism that were built to be avant-garde, culture and dissemination of the universal heritage spaces. On behalf of César opposed political speeches have been made, flags have been displayed and multi-coloured inaugural straps have been cut. The real estate market and political parties have
