Los volcanes oníricos de José Melián se instalan en Casa Mané TEXTO: Eloy Vera José Melián no recuerda si tenía 12 o 14 años cuando vio por primera vez las Montañas del Fuego, en Lanzarote. Lo que no ha conseguido olvidar es la impresión que le produjo el paisaje de lavas y cenizas que se mostró ante sus ojos. Esa imagen la ha ido repitiendo, más tarde, en la mayoría de su producción pictórica. Una parte de ella viaja ahora hasta Casa Mané, en La Oliva, bajo el título de «Formaciones oníricas». A lo largo de 27 cuadros, el artista de Güime plasma su particular visión de este paisaje inserto en el Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. Melián llegó a la pintura casi por casualidad. Al terminar el bachillerato, un profesor le aconsejó matricularse en la Escuela Pancho Lasso de Arrecife. Tal vez, aquel profesor ya veía en José un futuro artista. El joven le hizo caso y se matriculó. Era mediados de los años setenta. Sus primeros pasos en la pintura estaban bajo la influencia surrealista. El joven Melián había quedado fascinado por la pintura del maestro del surrealismo, Salvador Dalí. Atraído por el autor de «La persistencia de la Memoria», viajó hasta Figueras para conocer al artista y ver su obra. «Intenté conocerlo, pero me fue imposible porque Dalí se encontraba enfermo», recuerda. Sin embargo, sí pudo recorrer las dependencias de la casa museo del pintor y contagiarse de sus influencias. .4
Dalí está en los primeros cuadros de José Melián, pero también Lanzarote y su mar. Sus obras iniciales representan el fondo del mar, el rebozo, las vivencias en el mar, los atardeceres… todo ello bajo una óptica surrealista. Más tarde, su pintura caminó hacia un estilo personal. En esa evolución estaría la figura de César Manrique, el pintor lanzaroteño más internacional del que este año se cumple un centenario de su nacimiento. César y José se conocieron en la inauguración de El Almacén, un espacio cultural que abrieron Manrique y Pepe Dámaso, en Arrecife, y que revolucionaría la cultura insular con propuestas atrevidas que abrían Lanzarote al mundo de las vanguardias. Por sus instalaciones se dejaron ver exposiciones de Óscar Domínguez, Jim Dine o Clyfford Still o la primera videocreación hecha en Canarias. Melián recuerda que su relación con César era la de «amigo pintor». Del artista le llamaba la atención la particular visión que tenía de los paisajes volcánicos, la naturaleza, los insectos…. Recuerda también el compromiso medioambiental que el creador de los Jameos del Agua desarrolló en Lanzarote en pleno desarrollo urbanístico y especulativo. «Al principio la gente no lo entendía, pero luego le hacían más caso. César fue un genio», insiste. El estilo personal de José Melián le llevaría a jugar con nuevos materiales: colas, resinas, texturas, relieves… La primera exposición llegó en el año 1989. Fue la sala Marqués de Herrera, ya desaparecida, de la Villa de Teguise, la que le abrió las puertas a su particular visión de Lanzarote.
Poco a poco, su obra empezó a colgar de galerías y de espacios reservados para el arte. En 1994, expuso en El Almacén. Hasta allí llevó una serie de obras en las que plasmaba su visión de los volcanes, una mirada desde el interior del volcán, «la vida dentro del subsuelo», explica. Los volcanes están muy presentes en su obra. Asegura que «cada pintor pinta según el sitio donde vive» y tira de nuevo de César Manrique para recordar cómo este decía que «una persona que vivía en Nueva York pinta rascacielos mientras que quien vive en Lanzarote lo más que puede pintar son volcanes». En todo este tiempo, José Melián ha realizado unas 30 exposiciones entre individuales y colectivas. Es incapaz de recordarlas todas, pero sí enumera algunas como la realizada en La Palma; la de la Fundación Mapfre en Gran Canaria, la de San Sebastián, en País Vasco, o la colectiva en la que participó con algunas obras que recorrieron Madrid y Barcelona. También estuvo en la década de los noventa exponiendo en Fuerteventura, en una sala del Cabildo. Ahora, José Melián regresa a Fuerteventura con la exposición «Formaciones oníricas». El autor explica cómo en esta muestra traslada al lienzo «recuerdos del subconsciente, recuerdos de cuando tenía 12 o 14 años y vi por primera vez los volcanes de Timanfaya». En los lienzos se muestran esos recuerdos a través de una interesante variedad cromática donde se plasman las variedades cónicas de los volcanes, las rocas ígneas solidificadas, las cenizas, cráteres, tubos volcánicos…. La exposición permanecerá en el Centro de Arte Canario Casa Mané desde el 23 de noviembre hasta el 17 de enero.

JosĂŠ MeliĂĄn can’t remember whether he was 12 or 14 when he saw ÂŤMontaĂąas del FuegoÂť for the first time, in Lanzarote. What he’s never forgotten has been the impact the lava and ashes landscape in front of his eyes had on him. That image has been shown later on in his paintings. One part of it is now travelling to Casa ManĂŠ, in La Oliva, under the name ÂŤFormaciones OnĂricasÂť. Through 27 paintings, the artist from GĂźime portrays his particular vision of this landscape inserted in the national park of Timanfaya. MeliĂĄn got to painting almost by chance. When he finished high school, a teacher advised him to enrol in Escuela Pancho Lasso in Arrecife. Maybe that teacher could already see JosĂŠ as a future artist. The young boy listened to him and did it. It was in the mid seventies. At his dawn in painting he was influenced by surrealism. The young MeliĂĄn had been fascinated by the paintings by Salvador DalĂ, a master of surrealism.
Attracted by the author of ÂŤLa persistencia de la MemoriaÂť he travelled to Figueres to meet the artist and his work. ÂŤI tried meet him, but it was impossible because DalĂ was illÂť, he remembers. However, he could visit the rooms of the painter’s house and museum and get his influence. DalĂ is in JosĂŠ MeilĂĄn’s first paintings, but also Lanzarote and its sea. His first pieces of work represent the sea bed but also the surface, the experiences in the sea, the dusk‌ all of it through surrealist lenses. Later on his painting got a personal style. In this evolution, the figure of CĂŠsar Manrique appeared, the most international painter from Lanzarote, who this year would have become 100. CĂŠsar and JosĂŠ met in the inauguration of El AlmacĂŠn, a cultural space that Manrique and Pepe DĂĄmaso opened in Arrecife and that would stir up the island culture with daring proposals that opened Lanzarote to the avant-garde world. Exhibitions by Ă“scar DomĂnguez, Jim Dine or Clyfford Still or the first video creation made in The Canary Islands could be watched In its facilities. MeliĂĄn remembers that his relationship with CĂŠsar was one of ÂŤfriend painterÂť. The artist’s particular vision of the volcanic landscape, nature, insects... drew his attention. He also remembers the environmental commitment that the creator of ÂŤJameos del AguaÂť developed in Lanzarote in full urban and speculative development. ÂŤIn the beginning people didn’t understand him, but then they paid more attention to him. CĂŠsar was a geniusÂť, he insists. The personal style of JosĂŠ MeilĂĄn took him to play with new materials: glues, resins, textures, reliefs‌ The first exhibition was in the year 1989.
It was the room ÂŤMarquĂŠs de HerreraÂť, already disappeared, in the village of Teguise, which opened the doors to his particular view of Lanzarote. Little by little, his work started to be exhibited in galleries and places reserved to art. In 1994 he exhibited in ÂŤEl AlmacĂŠnÂť. There he took a series of pieces of work that captured his vision of volcanos, a view from the inside of a volcano, ÂŤlife within the subsoilÂť, he says. Volcanos are really present in his work. He assures that ÂŤevery painter paints depending on where they liveÂť and he again remembers how CĂŠsar Manrique said that ÂŤa person who lives in New York paints skyscrapers while a person living in Lanzarote doesn’t paint but volcanosÂť. In all of this time, JosĂŠ MeilĂĄn has carried out about 30 exhibitions, what with individual and collective ones. He can’t remember all of them, but he mentions some of them, like the one in La Palma, in FundaciĂłn Mapfre in Gran Canaria, in San SebastiĂĄn in The Basque country, or the collective one where he took part with some pieces of work that could be seen in Madrid and Barcelona. He also exhibited in Fuerteventura in the nineties, in a room of the Island council. Now, JosĂŠ MeilĂĄn returns to Fuerteventura with his exhibition ÂŤFormaciones onĂricasÂť. The author tells how in this painting he captures ÂŤmemories of my subconsciousness, memories of when I was 12 or 14 and I saw the volcanos of Timanfaya for the first timeÂť. He shows these memories through an interesting chromatic variety where he captures the different conical shapes of volcanos, the igneous and solidified rocks, ashes, craters, volcanic tubes‌ the exhibition will remain in the Canary Island, in Centre Casa ManĂŠ, from November 23rd to January 17th.

ADIÓS A LA ESCOMBRERA DEL BARRANCO DE LAJARES
El Barranco de Lajares ya no es una escombrera. Después de la retirada de nada más y nada menos que 12 toneladas de basura por parte del Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, el barranco recupera su condición de entorno natural. Para acabar con la mala costumbre de tirar cualquier desperdicio a una escombrera que no lo es, estropeando el medio y creando un terrible impacto en la naturaleza, la Concejalía de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de La Oliva ha acotado el perímetro de la zona y ha colocado carteles informativos para concienciar a la población y hacer que respeten las normas de tratamiento de residuos, con el objetivo de implicar a vecinas y vecinos para que todos disfrutemos de un municipio más limpio. Las toneladas de desechos, entre las que se sacaron media tonelada de neumáticos y más de dos mil elec.16

Punto Limpio de Lajares A pocos metros de este barranco se encuentra el Punto Limpio de Lajares que recoge gratis los residuos de los vecinos. Un servicio gratuito del Cabildo de Fuerteventura que ofrece a particulares la recogida de todo tipo de residuos, enseres de gran tamaño, como electrodomésticos y muebles, escombros de pequeñas reformas, madera y metal, o residuos especiales como dispositivos electrónicos, baterías, etc. El Punto Limpio de Lajares se encuentra en la Calle Central (antigua carretera), y abre de martes a domingo en horario de 9:00 a 19:00 horas (cerrado lunes y festivos). GOODBYE TO THE TIP IN THE RAVINE OF LAJARES The ravine of Lajares isn’t a tip anymore. After the town hall of La Oliva removed 12 tons of rubbish, the ravine has recovered its condition of natural environment. To end with the bad habit of throwing away any waste to a tip which isn’t such, spoiling the environment and creating a terrible impact on nature, the town hall of La Oliva has constrained the perimeter of the area and has placed notice boards to make the population aware and make them respect the regulations of waste management, with the aim of involving the neighbours so that we can all enjoy a much cleaner municipality. The tons of waste, among which they withdrew half a ton of tyres and more than two thousand appliances and electronic devices, have been moved to “Complejo Ambiental de Zurita” for its appropriate processing and recycling. The works of cleaning and restoration of the ravine took one week, due to the huge amount of waste that had been gathered in the area, and it meant a joint effort by a specialised company, the environmental department and that of public works and services. The ravine of Lajares can already boast of recovering its environmental values. The cleaning and restoration tasks will keep taking place in other areas, but the most important task of the public institutions is raising awareness to get the active involvement of people in the respect and preservation of the natural environment.
Local waste facilities in Lajares A few metres away from this ravine we find the local waste facilities of Lajares, which collects the waste of the neighbours for free. This is a free service by the island council, which offers the collection of any kind of waste from private citizens, large household goods like electrical appliances and furniture, debris from minor remodelling, wood and metal, special waste such as electronic devices, batteries, etc. The local waste facilities of Lajares is in Calle Central (old road) and it’s open on Tuesday and Sunday from 9h00 to 19h00 (closed on Monday and holidays). ¿Si tuvieras 86.400€ y alguien te quitara 10€, invertirías los 86.390 euros restantes en buscar venganza? ¿Verdad que no? El día tiene 86.400 segundos y en ocasiones, tan solo 10 de ellos son suficientes para arruinarnos el día.. a veces incluso la semana (eso serían 604.800 segundos). ¿Sabes de lo que te hablo? Nuestra naturaleza humana nos hace vulnerables y eso nos ayuda a conectar con otros seres vivos; pero a veces, esa misma vulnerabilidad también puede transformar nuestras vidas en verdaderos infiernos y hacernos vivir unas batallas internas que sabotean todos nuestros propósitos. Cuando eso me ocurre, me siento sola, incomprendida, con ganas de tirar la toalla. Además, en esos momentos siempre busco culpables, discuto más de lo habitual y luego por supuesto, me arrepiento de todo… ¿Y todo por qué? todo por no saber cómo gestionar esos 10 segundos. Pero no te preocupes, porque en este capítulo de Macaronesia, te quiero hacer un regalo muy especial.
