Verónica Silva El bordado como ARTE SUBVERSIVO en Fuerteventura

Verónica Silva, alias Ninoka, como la llamaba su abuela, es natural de Ecuador y lleva 8 años asentada en la isla de Fuerteventura. Estudió Diseño de Interiores en Madrid y un Master de Arte Textil en la Universidad de Arte de Londres Saint Martins. TEXTO: BILI PUIG DE LA BELLACASA

Tras sus estudios en Londres pasó varios años trabajando de diseñadora textil y de interiores tanto en Bélgica, donde vivió 5 años, como en Ecuador. Allí trabajó en programas de la AECI (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional) como técnico de Diseño Textil con comunidades indígenas y donde aprendió las técnicas del bordado y del tejido. Estas herramientas, y el interés por realizar propuestas artísticas colaborativas, empujaron a Verónica a dirigir proyectos artísticos en los que han participado hasta 23 personas. Su proyecto «Las Penélopes» acogió a 45.000 visitantes en las ferias «Creativa» de Madrid, Barcelona y Bruselas en los años 2013 a 2015. Con su obra artística ha participado en exposiciones tanto individuales como colectivas, dentro y fuera del país. Pero aparte de su trayectoria profesional, que es clave para hablar de la iniciativa que ha emprendido en Fuerteventura, debemos presentar la faceta personal de Ninoka. Ella es feminista y activista. Y así, conoció a otras mujeres que como ella actúan en pos de la igualdad de derechos para la mujer y surgió el «Colectivo de Tejedoras Subversivas en Fuerteventura». Silva les propuso la creación de este grupo en el que priman la conversación y los bordados siempre de contenido subversivo. Visionando la necesidad de agitar conciencias en la isla, la misión de este grupo no es otra que trasladar una de las «labores tradicionales», históricamente adjudicada al género femenino en los tiempos de nuestras madres, abuelas y sus madres antes que ellas, al terreno feminista convirtiéndola en una técnica de denuncia actual.

«La aguja subversiva» y que pretende dar a conocer el grupo y llamar al empoderamiento colectivo. Se puede visitar hasta el 22 de de noviembre.

Cuando le preguntamos su opinión sobre la presencia de mujeres en el arte, su postura es clara: «durante muchos años ha estado vetado para las mujeres. Las mujeres artistas están mínimamente representadas en las ferias de arte, en los museos y galerías. Por ello, desde el colectivo deseamos despertar conciencias, reivindicando la importancia de la creatividad femenina, ya sea con la pintura, la escultura y, desde luego, mediante la reinterpretación de estas técnicas tradicionalmente femeninas, como el bordado, para que sirvan como un elemento más de lucha.» Uno de sus objetivos como Colectivo es por tanto, «ubicar su obra en espacios culturales y galerías de arte, pero siempre en busca de un reto mucho mayor, el de dar visibilidad y potenciar la concienciación de alguno de los temas de denuncia social que están hoy sobre la mesa, como son las violaciones grupales, los vientres de alquiler o la problemática de la venta de mujeres afganas como esclavas, la protección del medioambiente, entre otros». Cabe destacar que el proyecto «Del tejido y bordado subversivo» ha sido seleccionado por el Gobierno de Canarias para ser expuesto en la Casa de los Coroneles en la programación del próximo año, 2020, exposición para la que el Colectivo ya está preparando nueva obra.

VerĂłnica Silva, alias Ninoka, as her grand-mother used to call her, was born in Ecuador but sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been settled in Fuerteventura for 8 years now. She studied interior design in Madrid and a Master in Textile Art in the Arts University of London, Saint Martins. TEXTO: BILI PUIG DE LA BELLACASA

After her studies in London she spent several years working as a textile and interior designer in Belgium, where she lived for five years, and then in Ecuador. There she worked in programmes by AECI (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation) as a textile design technician with native communities, and there she learnt embroidery and fabrics techniques. These tools, and her interest for carrying out cooperative artistic proposals, pushed VerĂłnica to manage artistic projects where up to 23 people have taken part in. Her project, ÂŤLas PenĂŠlopesÂť gathered 4500 visitors in the ÂŤCreativaÂťfairs in Madrid, Barcelona and Brussels in the years 2013-2015. With her artistic work he has taken part in individual and collective exhibitions, in this country and abroad.

But apart from her career path, which is key to talk about the iniciative she has undertaken in Fuerteventura, whe must present the personal side of Ninoka: sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a feminist and an activist, so she has met other women that, like herself, claim equality of rights and then ÂŤColectivo de Tejedoras Subversivas en FuerteventuraÂť arose. Silvia suggested the creation of this group where the subversive contents are a priority in their conversation and embroidery. They see the need to make the inhabitants of the island aware; their aim is take one of the traditional handicrafts, historically carried out by women in the times of our mothers, grand-mothers and their mothers before them, to the feminist field, turning it into the present reporting technique.

One of their objectives as a collective is to ÂŤplace their works in cultural centres and art galleries, but always in search of a much bigger target: give visivility and boosting the awareness of some of the topics of social criticism that are on the table today, like group rapes, surrogate mothers, the issue of the selling of Afghan women as slaves, environmental protection â&#x20AC;Ś among othersÂť. We must highlight that the project ÂŤDel tejido y bordado subversivoÂť has been selected by the government of the Canary Islands to be exhibited in la Casa de los Coroneles in the programme of next 2020, exhibition for which the collective is already preparing a new piece of work.

When we ask for her opinion about the presence of women in art, her position is clear: ÂŤFor many years it has been banned for women. Artist women were slightly represented in art fairs, museums and galleries. This is why, from this collective, we wish to raise awareness, claiming the importance of feminine creativity, with painting, sculpture and, of course, by means of the reinterpretation of of these traditionally feminine techniques, like embroidery, so they can be used as one more element of this fightÂť.

Portavoz de Fuerteventura por el Clima «Entre la crisis climática y el pastoreo la isla está abocada a ser más desértica todavía» Texto: Eloy Vera Pau Valverde es de profesión artesano del barro y activista de convicción. Es miembro de la Asociación Fuerteventura Sostenible y de la Plataforma por un Nuevo Modelo Energético. También es portavoz de Fuerteventura por el Clima, un movimiento social que lucha por poner freno a la crisis climática que azota a al planeta. ¿Cómo surge Fuerteventura por el Clima? Surge a raíz de la convocatoria de la Huelga Mundial por el Clima, que se hizo el 27 de septiembre. Llevábamos ya meses trabajando en el tema. Fue un intento para aunar asociaciones y particulares y que la gente tome conciencia. La forman seis asociaciones y también gente que no está vinculada a ellas. ¿Cómo puede afectar la crisis climática a Fuerteventura? Ya está afectando. Por ejemplo, a nivel de playas van a desaparecer por el aumento del nivel del mar. La marea se llevará la arena y nos quedaremos sin playas. El aumento del nivel del mar implica que los acuíferos se vayan desalinizando más. Por tanto, el agua será más salada y se perderá un recurso hídrico muy importante. También, al aumentar la temperatura en los países del norte de Europa, va a haber menos necesidad de que los turistas en la época de invierno vengan a Canarias a buscar el sol y el buen tiempo. Eso se está notando ya porque en Alemania o Inglaterra el invierno está siendo menos frío y, por tanto, dejan de llegar. Por otro lado, el aumento del calor hace que la agricultura y la ganadería sufran porque hay menos lluvias. Y eso implica plagas para la agricultura y enfermedades para los animales, sobre todo para las cabras que se tienen que adaptar a una nueva situación. Habla de la desaparición de playas, ¿cómo puede afectar a la industria turística esta situación? El turista viene porque las playas siempre han sido un .6

reclamo, pero si no hay arena ni playas, simplemente, la gente no vendrá. ¿Cómo afectará la desertización a la isla? El aumento de la temperatura hace que para la vegetación sea más difícil. Al disminuir las lluvias y la humedad en el ambiente disminuye la cantidad de vegetación que hay en la isla. A eso añadimos el pastoreo incontrolado de las cabras de costa que provoca erosión y aumenta la desertización porque se comen todo. Entre una cosa y otra, la isla está abocada a ser más desértica todavía. ¿La crisis climática también puede hacer que Canarias se convierta en un destino de refugiados climáticos, teniendo en cuenta que ya la población del continente africano empieza a sentir los estragos del clima? A medio plazo sí. De hecho, ya hay movimientos migratorios por el clima. Un ejemplo es lo que pasa con la sobrepesca en Senegal. En el África subsahariana el hecho de que se pierdan tierras y cosechas porque aumenta el calor hace que vengan más emigrantes, pero de paso porque Canarias es una puerta de entrada a Europa. A largo plazo, los mismos canarios vamos a ser emigrantes porque estamos en una economía que depende eminentemente del turismo. A medio y largo plazo va a disminuir muchísimo y entonces hay que pensar cómo prepararnos para esa emigración. ¿Cómo está afectando la industria turística a la crisis climática? Afecta mucho. La mayor parte de los turistas vienen en avión y los aviones son grandes emisores de CO2. En el caso de los cruceros son un desastre porque queman el peor combustible y el más contaminante y que emite azufre y CO2. El turismo es depredador de por sí pues

PAU VALVERDE IS A POTTER BY PROFESSION BUT A CONVINCED ACTIVIST. HE’S A MEMBER OF THE ASSOCIATION «FUERTEVENTURA SOSTENIBLE» AND «PLATAFORMA POR UN NUEVO MODELO ENERGÉTICO». HE’S ALSO A SPOKESPERSON OF «FUERTEVENTURA POR EL CLIMA», A SOCIAL MOVEMENT FIGHTING TO STOP THE CLIMATE CRISIS WHICH IS SWEEPING THE GLOBE. How does Fuerteventura por el Clima arise? It stems from the call for The Global Climate Strike on September 27th. We’ve been working on this issue for months. It was an attempt to unite associations and individuals and also to raise people’s awareness. It’s made up by six associations and also by people who aren’t members of them. How can the Climate crisis affect Fuerteventura? It’s already affecting us. For example, regarding the beaches they are doomed to disappear due to the rising sea levels. The tide will drag the sand and we’ll lose the beaches. The rising sea levels will mean aquifers will become saltier and a very important water resource will be lost. Also, as the temperature increases in the European northern countries, tourists won’t see so much need to come to the Canary Islands in search of the sun and good weather. We’re already noticing it as in Germany or England the Winter is becoming warmer and they don’t come so much now. On the other hand, hotter weather makes agriculture and livestock suffer, as it rains less. This means plagues for agriculture and diseases for animals, mainly goats, which have to adapt to a new situation. You speak about beaches disappearing, how can this situation affect the tourism industry? Tourists come because they’ve always been attracted to these beaches, so if there’s no sand and beaches tourists simply won’t come. How will desertification affect the island? The rise of temperatures makes it more difficult for plants. As it rains less and there’s less humidity in the environment the vegetation in the island decreases. To this we must add the uncontrolled grazing by coastal goats, which causes erosion and makes desertification increase, as they devour everything. What with one thing and the other, the island is bound to become even more desert. Can the Climate crisis make The Canary Islands become a shelter for climate refugees, bearing in mind that the population of Africa is already feeling the ravages of the weather? In the long run, it could. Actually, there are already migratory movement due to weather. This is happening in Senegal due to overfishing. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the fact of losing lands and harvests due to the high temperatures make more immigrants come, also because the Canary Islands are an entry to Europe. In the long run, we’ll also migrate, as our economy depends mainly on tourism. In a medium and long term, tourism will decrease a lot and then we’ll have to think of how we’ll get ready for that migration. How is the tourism industry affecting the climate crisis? It’s affecting a lot! Most tourists come by plane, and planes are great sources of CO2 emissions. Cruisers are a disaster, as they burn the worst fuel and the most polluting one, causing sulphur and CO2 emissions. Tourists are predators per se, as they consume lots of water, and much food coming to Fuerteventura comes by ship, which also increases the climate crisis.

What role is the administration from Fuerteventura playing in the fight against the climate crisis? None whatsoever. The problem is that between the speech and the action there is a huge gap. They make political speeches devoid of content, but when it comes to acting they don’t do anything. They just think in the short run and this is one of the problems of democracy as it is nowadays. They just think for a period of four years. The issue of the climate crisis must be dealt with in a medium and long term. But these actions don’t give election results. They’re so irresponsible that they do nothing. And what must politicians do? To think in a medium and long term, not to be selfish, not to think of seats but of actions. In the case of Fuerteventura the scarcity of rain must be reverted as much as possible. And this can be achieved by reforesting the summits and making the most of the mist, as we are experts in this. It will come a day when trees, having grown up, will trap the mist thus condensing into water. That water will go to aquifers and this will allow a natural process of reforestation. We should plant millions of trees to, on the one hand, recover sweet water in aquifers, and on the other hand to get food and resources for the island. What can the citizens do to save the planet? Rather than to save the planet, to save themselves. The planet will save itself. When we overstep the mark, it’ll chase us out. We mustn’t stop thinking that we’re just one more species and if we act like a plague we’ll die as such. The planet has self-control systems, but to save humanity we must reduce energetic consumption a lot and this means a reduction in the consumption of everything. We must completely change our life styles. We must become much simpler. Then, is the moment to go back to the primary sector... Yes. Beyond the climate crisis, we must turn to agriculture, also for a survival question. We import the 95% of the food we consume. Up to now, we’ve managed to import it because the fossil fuels were very cheap but, at any moment, a geopolitical crisis could arise and then oil prices would increase so all the food would be much more expensive. We must turn to agriculture and a livestock that isn’t predator, just for the sake of survival. Fuerteventura is also a land of military manoeuvres. This human action brings about problems in the ´degradation of the island and the climate crisis... We must remember that some years ago there were some NATO manoeuvres where they organized sonars and a lot of beaked whales died. This happened due to the military use of the waters of Fuerteventura. Soldiers also destroy the environment when performing manoeuvres. They erode the ground and don’t respect agricultural properties. They also camp wherever they feel like to and every time they set off explosives in the firing range they destroy the environment, let alone all the CO2 emissions from their military cars and planes. What would you say to those people who deny we are immerse in a climate crisis? That they’re taking too long to accept reality. Behind denial of climate crisis there’re spurious and economic interests, mainly oil. They don’t want to stop earning money whatever the cost, even that of biodiversity. Those people are doing themselves a huge disservice. Denying it verges on the absurd.

La joven estudia estos días para superar primero de Bachillerato. Ha elegido la rama de Humanidades. Una vez haya superado los dos años de Bachillerato, se enfrentará a la universidad. No duda que estudiará el doble grado de Educadora y Trabajo Social porque lo suyo es ayudar a la gente. También tiene claro que quiere llegar a ser arbitro y que se le reconozca por triunfar en un mundo que, en pleno siglo XXI, sigue liderado por hombres. Gabriella llegó al arbitraje casi por casualidad. Un vecino suyo se apuntó y a ella le entró el gusanillo. No había jugado nunca al fútbol, pero se había criado en un hogar con sangre futbolera. También, desde hacía algún tiempo, se había habituado a ir a ver a sus compañeros jugar al fútbol. «Iba a partidos, y escuchaba comentarios del público a los árbitros del tipo `¡no sabes de fútbol!´. Por eso, me dieron ganas de apuntarme», explica. Su madre y ella empezaron a buscar e investigar sobre el curso de arbitraje. Cuando lo tuvo todo, se apuntó. Tenía 15 años y aún no sabía que sería una de las primeras mujeres en repartir justicia en los campos de fútbol de Fuerteventura. .10

This young girl is studying now to pass the first year of post compulsory education. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chosen humanities. Once sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passed the second year sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go to university. She is positive sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll study a double degree programme i social education and work. She also wants to become a referee and being recognised for succeeding in a world that, though in the XXI century, keeps being led by men. Gabriela reached the world of refereeing by chance. A neighbour of hers joined it and she got bitten by the bug. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never played football before but she grew up in a home where football ran. Also, for some time, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d got used to watching her friends playing football: ÂŤI went to see matches and listened to the comments of the audience towards referees, such as you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about football. This is why I felt like joining themÂť, she says. Her mother and herself started to look for and into the referee training course. When she had everything she enrolled. She was 15 and she still didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know she would become one of the first women to distribute justice in the football pitches in Fuerteventura. This is the second season as a referee and, although her carnet reads she can referee in the junior category, up to now she only does it for children. Her dream is to become a ronowned referee. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to be like StĂŠphanie Frappart, the first woman who whistled in a male final of the UEFA supercup. In her short career as a referee, Gabriella admits she has lived moments of discouragement due to ÂŤnasty comments towards refereesÂť, but she has learnt to put up with them. She hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t suffered male chauvinist comments while whistling a match, but she has had to stand comments from some mates in high school such us:ÂŤthe pitch is just for you to wash itÂť.Gabriellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s answer is clear: ÂŤtheyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re stupid peopleÂť. Among her memories, Gabriella remembers a match where she whistled an off-side. The coach of the team told her she was wrong and he got mad: ÂŤhe called me every name under the sun and said I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what an off-side was. However recently a senior coach congratulated me on whistling an off-side very wellÂť. This gesture filled her with self-confidence. Every day that

Esta es su segunda temporada como árbitro y aunque en su carnet pone que puede hacerlo en categoría juvenil, de momento, pita en infantiles. Su sueño en el mundo del arbitraje es ser conocida por ser árbitro. Le gustaría llegar a ser como Stéphanie Frappart, la primera mujer que pitó en una final masculina de la Supercopa de la UEFA. En su corto recorrido como árbitro, Gabriella reconoce que ha vivido momentos de bajón por comentarios «feos hacia los árbitros», pero ha aprendido a llevarlos bien. El machismo, mientras pita en los partidos, no lo ha sufrido en carnes propias, pero sí ha tenido que soportar comentarios de compañeros en el instituto del tipo «la cancha solo te sirve para fregarla». La respuesta de Gabriella es clara: «es gente sin dos dedos de frente». En su anecdotario, Gabriella recuerda un partido en el que pitó un fuera de juego. El entrenador del equipo le dijo que no lo era y se molestó. «Me dijo de todo y que no sabía lo que era un fuera de juego. Sin embargo, el otro día otro entrenador de una categoría superior me felicitó por pitar muy bien un fuera de juego». El gesto llenó a la joven de confianza en sí misma. Cada día que pasa Gabriella va aprendiendo algo nuevo de sus compañeros árbitros de Fuerteventura. En el Comité de Árbitros asegura que no ha vivido episodios de machismo. En el campo tampoco. Los niños pequeños, a los que arbitra, a veces se sorprenden de ver pitando a una chica, «pero no ha visto falta de respeto por ser mujer, sin embargo, sí muchísimas a los árbitros». Para Gabriella, el remedio es hacer como que «no escuchamos esos comentarios, porque si les hiciéramos caso no seguiríamos un partido más. Hay personas que están increpando, pero que no han luchado lo que una ha luchado para conseguir el título». .12

Gabriella llegó al feminismo de la mano de Ore Vera, una profesora de Lengua y Literatura, destacada por su activismo feminista. Ore junto a un grupo de alumnas creó la Sexta Cariátide, una asociación feminista del IES San Diego de Alcalá, pionera en este ámbito entre los centros educativos de Fuerteventura y reconocida por su labor con el premio Meninas que otorgan las delegaciones del Gobierno de toda España en reconocimiento en pro de valores como la igualdad, la paz o el feminismo. «Con Ore descubrí que siempre había tenido una feminista en mi casa. Esa feminista era mi madre y nunca la había valorado. Empecé a debatir con ella y a darme cuenta de que el mundo no era como lo pintaban los hombres», comenta. Sentada en un banco de Puerto del Rosario, Gabriella recuerda sus inicios en la Sexta Cariátide. «Fue un periodo muy bueno, se me abrieron los ojos sobre bastantes temas». «También Ore me hizo ver que siempre había sido feminista, pero no me había percatado de ello», asegura. Gabriella insiste en que hay que quitar a la gente la idea de que el feminismo «busca denigrar al hombre. Realmente lo que busca es la igualdad. El feminismo es la igualdad y para ello hace falta respetar algunas cosas». Esta joven, de 16 años, reconoce que en el instituto se suelen oír comentarios machistas por parte de algunos jóvenes. No ocurre lo mismo en el Comité de Árbitros donde todos son hombres salvo ella y Candela Martín, la otra arbitro de Fuerteventura, además de delegada. «Los hombres nos respetan muchísimo. El machismo, a día de hoy, lo veo más en personas de mi edad que en mayores, pero también puede ser que sea porque convivo con chicos de mi edad», señala. El sueño de Gabriella es poder arbitrar en partidos importantes. El día que lo consiga dará las gracias a su madre por haber confiado en ella en todo momento. También al Comité Técnico de Árbitros «porque creen muchísimo en nosotros y a Candela Martín. Quiero llegar lejos para que me aplaudan y digan ole lo que ha conseguido Gabriella, la de Fuerteventura».

There are people telling us off, but they’ve never fought what I have in order to get my title»

FEMINISM Gabriella got to feminism hand in hand with Ore Vera, a language and literature teacher outstanding for her feminist activism. Ore, together with a group of students, created La Sexta Cariátide, a feminist association from the IES San Diego in Alcalá, a pioneer in this field in educative centres in Fuerteventura and renowned for her work with the Meninas Prize awarded to all the government delegations in Spain in recognition of values such as equality, peace or feminism. «With Ore I found out I had always had a feminist at home. That feminist was my mother and I had never considered her as such. I started to discuss with her and I realised that the world wasn’t as men saw it», she says. Sitting on a bench in Puerto del Rosario, Gabriella remembers her start in La Sexta Cariátide. «It was a very nice period, I became aware of many things». «Ore made me realise that I’d always been a feminist, but I had never noticed». Gabriella insists that people must stop thinking that feminism tries to denigrate men. What it really looks for is equality. Feminism is equality, and in order to reach it certain points must be respected». This young sixteen-year-old girl admits that some high school students usually make male chauvinist comments. It doesn’t happen the same in the referee committee, where all the members except for her and Candela Martín, the other referee woman in Fuerteventura, are men. Candela Martín is also a delegate. «Men respect us a lot. Nowadays I can see more male chauvinism among people my age than among elder people, but maybe it’s also because I live together with boys my age», she says. Gabriella’s dream is to be able to referee important matches. The day she succeeds she will thank her mother for having always trusted her. She also thanks the technical committee of referees because «they really believe in me and Candela Martín. I want to get far so they applaud me and say hurrah what Gabriella, from Fuerteventura, has achieved».

Refugio de animales de granja en Fuerteventura

Hace 5 años, en enero de 2015, tres grandes personas, profesionales del mundo de la veterinaria y del bienestar animal, se conocen en Fuerteventura. Tienen muchas cosas en común, sobre todo, les une el amor a los animales y la conciencia de que el mundo tiene que cambiar, la idea de que cada uno de los habitantes de este planeta debe tomar conciencia de la huella que deja con sus acciones, no solo en relación a los animales, sino, sobre todo, a nivel medio ambiental, porque todo está unido. Belén Roca, Olga Amann y Julio Cruz, amigos y amantes de las ideas bonitas, comienzan a soñar, a imaginar un refugio para animales de granja, una idea a la que le dedicaban largas conversaciones motivados sobre todo porque consideraban que Fuerteventura está abierta a estos proyectos. «En Canarias no existe un refugio de animales de este tipo, considerado de granja y Fuerteventura es una isla muy abierta al cambio, se necesita concienciación sobre la importancia de respetar y conservar este entorno maravilloso», comenta Belén, una de las fundadoras. Esta idea bonita comienza a coger forma rescate tras rescate hasta convertirse hace 1 año en el Refugio Animal Academy, una asociación sin ánimo de lucro, cuyo objetivo es el rescate de animales de granja que viven situaciones de abandono o maltrato. Un lugar especiali.14

Curro zado en la educación y concienciación en torno al buen trato y cuidado de estos animales. Estos tres amigos son el equipo perfecto ya que tanto Belén como Olga son licenciadas en Veterinaria; Olga es Diplomada Europea en Medicina en Aves. Belén está especializada en comportamiento, medicina preventiva y diseño de instalaciones y tiene un máster en Gestión de Centros de recuperación de animales salvajes. Julio es auxiliar veterinario y todo un manitas; es el encargado de los rescates, lleva a cabo toda la logística de capturas y el manejo de animales. Son precisamente Belén y Julio quienes nos abre las puertas del Refugio. ¿Cómo empieza todo? Todo comienza con el rescate de Misu, un precioso y

mimoso gatito al que vimos salir lanzado por la ventanilla del coche que conducía delante del nuestro. Por supuesto paramos a recogerlo, y lo que creímos que era un paquete de tabaco resultó ser un bebé gato con la mandíbula rota del impacto, los ojos destrozados, heridas por todas partes y lleno de pulgas. Pronto llegó el segundo rescate. Un burrito negro, Willi, que aún siendo hijo de burro y burra majoreros no cumplía con los estándares por su color, y su destino sería el sacrificio. Cuando lo rescatamos tenía 8 meses. Así fueron llegando más y más. ¿Cuántos animales hay ahora mismo y cuál es vuestra política con respecto a ellos? Actualmente tenemos unos setenta animales: burros, cerdos, carneros, cabras, patos, cobayas, conejos, un

Shelter of farming animals in Fuerteventura Five years ago, in January 2015, three great people, professionals in the animal welfare and veterinary world meet in Fuerteventura. They have many things in common, especially their love towards animals and awareness of the need for the world to change, the idea that each inhabitant of this planet must be aware of the trace their actions leave, not just regarding animals but, most of all, environment, because everything is related. Belén Roca, Olga Amann and Julio Cruz, friends and lovers of beautiful ideas, start to dream, to imagine a farming animal shelter, an idea to which they dedicated long conversations, very motivated because they consider Fuerteventura to be open to this kind of projects. «In the Canary Islands there isn’t a shelter for farming animals, and Fuerteventura is an island very open to change; we need to raise awareness about the importance to respect and preserve this wonderful

erizo, una paloma, gallinas, perros, gatos, loros y dos humanos… (risas). El refugio es para animales de granja, ellos son nuestra prioridad ya que no existe otro lugar en el que se puedan hacer cargo de ellos. En el caso de los perros, salvo los que ya son de la familia, a los nuevos los tenemos en acogida e intentamos buscar adopción responsable. Nuestra política es castrar a todos los machos y a las hembras cuando la especie lo permite, ya que hay súper población de animales en el mundo, y nuestras plazas son límitadas y deben estar disponibles para rescates externos. El mantenimiento de todo esto tiene que ser muy costoso, ¿cómo os estáis arreglando? Desde el principio todo salía de nuestros bolsillos, facturas de agua, consultas veterinarias, medicinas, tratamientos, pienso… Nuestros gastos personales se redujeron a cero. Nos dimos cuenta de que no era sostenible, esto seguía creciendo y ya no podíamos seguir afrontándolo solos. Así, al convertirnos en Asociación, decidimos poner en marcha distintas modalidades de financiación, como el teaming, socios y socias, padrinos de animales, donaciones (sacos de pienso, mantas…), campañas de crowfunding puntuales para acciones concretas. Ahora estamos trabajando en la tienda online benéfica en la que venderemos productos elaborados en sintonía con nuestro estilo de vida, pulseras, llaveros y cositas hechas con materiales reciclados. De todos modos, nosotros soportamos el 80% de los gastos del Refugio. ¿Tenéis alguna ayuda por parte de las administraciones? Por el momento no, pero con las administraciones nos gustaría trabajar mano a mano en la línea de la concienciación y educación que nos mueve. Por ejemplo, el Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario tiene una Concejalía de Bienestar Animal y nosotros somos profesionales entregados en esa materia, nos encantaría aportar nuestros conocimientos, formación y ganas para sacar adelante muchos proyectos en torno al bienestar animal. La verdad, nos parece que esta concejalía es un ejemplo a seguir ya que están abiertos a proyectos como el nuestro. Insistes mucho en que sobre todo el Refugio nace con idea de concienciar, cómo?¿Cuáles son vuestros objetivos a nivel concienciación? Nos gustaría provocar un cambio en las mentes de la gente que nos rodea, crear conciencia en la percepción de la huella que dejamos con cada una de nuestras acciones. Se trata de ir reduciendo la huella de cada uno, siendo conscientes de nuestras acciones y nuestro entorno. Y para intentar alcanzar ese cambio lo que proponemos es dar charlas y talleres en colegios, limpiar playas, talleres de reciclaje creativo,… tenemos muchas ideas, algunas ya en marcha. .16

Imagino que con esta filosofía de rescate y refugio, serán muchas las personas y entidades que os ayuden habitualmente… ¿Agradecimientos? Nos ayuda mucha, muchísima gente, voluntarios y clínicas veterinarias; en concreto nos gustaría destacar a la de Gran Tarajal y FuertePets de Corralejo, que se portan excepcionalmente… La realidad es que sin ayuda esto no sería posible, aunque por el momento, como te decía, el 80% del gastos lo soportamos nosotros, por ello estamos abiertos a cualquier ayuda que podamos recibir, socios, teaming,… gracias a estas ayudas podremos seguir rescatando animales. This wonderful idea starts taking shape after many animal rescues, until one year ago it became The Animal Academy Shelter, a nonprofit association whose aim is to rescue abandoned or battered farming animals. It’s a place specialised in the education and awareness about good treatment and care of these animals. These three friends make up the perfect team, as Belén and Olga are graduate in veterinary, Olga is a European bachelor in Birds Medicine. Belén is specialised in behaviour, preventive medicine and design of facilities and she’s got a master in management of wildlife assistance centres. Julio is a veterinary assistant and a truly handy man. He’s in charge of the rescues, carries out all the logistic of captures and handling of animals. It’s Belén and Julio that open us the doors of their shelter. How did it all start? It all started with the rescue of Misu, a precious loving kitten we could witness how it was thrown out of the window of the car that was driving in front of us. Of course we stopped to pick it up, and what we thought it was a packet of cigarettes turned out to be a kitten with a broken jaw due to the impact, destroyed eyes, injuries everywhere and full of fleas. Soon after that, the second rescue arrived: a little black donkey, Willi, which though being born to majorero donkeys it didn’t meet the standards due to his colour and his destiny would have been sacrifice. When we rescued him it was eight months old. Thus, more and more rescues followed.

How many animals are there right now and which is your policy towards them? At present we have around seventy animals: donkeys, pigs, rams, goats, ducks, guinea-pigs, rabbits, a hedgehog, a dove, hens, dogs, cats, parrots and two human-beings... (lol). The shelter is for farming animals, they’re our priority, as there isn’t any other place where they can take care of them. In the case of dogs, except for the ones that are already part of the family, the new ones are here just temporarily and we try to find a responsible foster family for them. Our policy is to sterilize all the males and females when the species allows it, as there is overpopulation of animals in the world and our places are limited and must be available for external rescues. The upkeep of all this must be expensive, how are you managing? From the very beginning we have paid for everything: water invoices, veterinary consultations, medicines, treatments, feed… our personal expenses reduced to zero. We realised this wasn’t sustainable, it kept increasing and we couldn’t afford it any longer by ourselves. So, when we became an association, we decided to set in motion different funding modalities, such as teaming, members, sponsors, donations (feed bags, blankets…), punctual crowdfunding campaigns for concrete actions. Now we’re working on an online charity shop where we’ll sell elaborated products in tune with our life style: bracelets, keyholes and little items made with recycled material. Anyway, we bear the 80% of the Shelter expenses. Do you have any help from administrations? Not now, but I’d like to work hand in hand with administrations regarding the awareness and education that move us. For example, The town hall of Puerto del Rosario has a Department of animal welfare and we’re professionals committed to this subject. We’d love to offer our knowledge, studies and will to carry out many projects about animal welfare. We think this department is a model to follow, as they are open to projects like ours. You insist that the shelter arises mainly aiming to raise awareness, how, what are your awareness targets? We’d like to bring about a change in the mind of the people surrounding us, making them be aware of the trace we leave with each one of our actions. It’s all about reducing this trace by considering our actions and our environment. And in order to reach this change we propose speeches and workshops in schools, cleaning beaches, creative recycling workshops…. We have lots of ideas and some of them are already being carried out. I imagine that they will be many the people and entities helping you with this shelter and rescue philosophy… who are you thankful to? There are quite a lot of people helping us, volunteers and veterinary clinics; we’d like to highlight, especially, that of Gran Tarajal, and Fuertepets in Corralejo, which behave exceptionally… The truth is that without any help this wouldn’t be possible, although at the moment we bear the 80% of the expenses as I said before. This is why we’re open to any help we can get, members, teaming….thanks to these helps we can keep rescuing animals. GIVE US A HAND BY DOING YOUR BIT SO WE CAN KEEP SAVING LIVES. Onexe, mejor club de España de SUP RACE, con la mayor cantera nacional El Club Onexe de Corralejo acaba la temporada con el título de Campeón de España por Clubes, además de con múltiples títulos individuales, con lo que se convierte en todo un referente a nivel nacional de un deporte que cada vez congrega a más participantes y clubes Pero no solo eso, Onexe, dedicado al Sup en todas sus modalidades, está destacando además a nivel internacional, ya que muchos de sus integrantes, deportistas de 14 a 17 años, han comenzado a competir en campeonatos mundiales y europeos. Destaca la actuación de una de estas campeonas, Esperanza, que en tan solo un año se ha colado en el Top Ten mundial femenino. Este club, que cuenta con la mayor cantera nacional, acaba la temporada con 6 campeones de España en Beach Race (Esperanza Barreras, Benjamin Moreham, Rakele Mannino, Vince Duschneit, Antonio Valero y Luca Boni) y 3 campeones de España en Larga Distacia (Esperanza Barreras, Izaskun Martin y Antonio Valero). Además, este año, el club preparó una selección para participar en el Circuito Europeo, en el que realizaron 5 de las 12 pruebas (San Sebastián, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Holanda y Alemania) consiguiendo magníficos resultados, como los de Nicolas Trujillo y Bárbara Bellavia, que se subieron al podium en el Iberdrola Bilbao World SUP Challenge. En la modalidad de Race, Onexe participó —solo durante el mes de septiembre— en las 4 competiciones nacionales más importantes del año de las que se traen un total de 10 medallas de oro; todo un reto no solo deportivo, sino también a nivel logístico y económico, ya que se desplazan con un remolque de 20 tablas de más de 4 metros. Y más éxitos, el equipo de Surfski de Onexe participó, por primera vez, con 4 deportistas del club en el Campeonato de España disputado en Mallorca, donde el jóven Iago Camacho Boam, que ya ostentaba el título de Campeón de Canarias, quedó subcampeón de España. Todos estos resultados se deben al Centro de Tecnificación Onexe, primer centro de tecnificación nacional certificado por la Federación Española de Surf y que acaba de cumplir su primer año de vida. Hablamos con Óscar Ruíz, entrenador del centro. En tan solo un año habéis pasado a ser el mejor club de España de SUP y a tener proyección internacional e incluso mundial, ¿a qué se debe este salto tan importante? Este centro de Tecnificación nos ha permitido hablar ya de entrenamientos de alto rendimiento, hemos su.18

bido mucho el nivel. Competir a nivel internacional no solo exige sacrificio, sino también constancia, valores que inculco día a día a mis deportistas. Además, ya no se trata de entrenar solo en el agua, en el club somos partidarios del multideporte: entrenamientos funcionales, salidas a correr, natación, etc. Se trata de asumir un estilo de vida deportivo, lleno de valores y beneficios; incluso nos preocupamos por enseñarles nutrición. Esta evolución se debe sobre todo a un trabajo conjunto y bien planificado, y es que contamos con grandes entrenadores: Esperanza Barreras (SUP), Mauricio Correa (Surfski) y Javier Cozar (Preparador Físico en tierra), que al ser también deportistas de alto rendimiento transmiten a los más jóvenes este estilo de vida. La respuesta del equipo ha sido de lo más satisfactoria, han demostrado un gran cambio de mentalidad y una total entrega; por ejemplo, este verano, los chicos de 14 a 17 años, no solo han doblado sus horas de entreno, pegándose madrugones, sino que además trabajaban en los campamentos de verano que teníamos en marcha en la escuela náutica. ¡Esto dice mucho! ¿Cómo se siente un entrenador cuando ve que su trabajo da estos frutos y en un periodo de tiempo tan corto? Me siento orgulloso por el compromiso que han asumido gracias a su motivación y a que han visto que el trabajo da sus frutos, ¡todos los podiums a los que se han subido¡. Es importante decir que en Onexe somos una gran familia, un equipo en el que nos motivamos unos a otros. Cuando uno sube al podium, a pesar de ser un resultado individual, todos lo ven como un trabajo de equipo, porque todos se han sacrificado, entrena-

do y motivado juntos. En un año han pasado a un nivel de entrenamiento que en un principio ni ellos mismos creían que podían conseguir; me llamaban loco cuando los mandaba a remar una hora y media sin parar; ahora están dos horas remando y corren después media horita para descargar; se ríen cuando se lo recuerdo (risas). Sobre todo, me siento más orgulloso por este cambio de mentalidad que por los títulos. Aunque los podiums son necesarios para que se nos vea y conseguir las ayudas que necesitamos para viajar y seguir compitiendo, que movernos con tanto equipo es muy costoso. ¿Cómo repercuten estos éxitos en el Club? El hecho de despuntar tanto nacional como internacionalmente está colocando Fuerteventura en el mapa y, por supuesto, el Centro de Tecnificación; son varios los riders internacionales que vendrán a entrenar con el equipo aprovechando nuestras excelentes condiciones climáticas y de olas durante esta próxima temporada de invierno.

Onexe, the best SUP RACE club in Spain, with the best team

Onexe Club, in Corralejo, finishes the season with the title of Champion Spanish Club, apart from many other individual awards which turn it into a national benchmark in a sport that is gathering more and more participants and clubs. But apart from this, Onexe, dedicated to Sup in all its modalities, is standing out internationally too, as many of their members, between 14 and 17 year-old athletes, have started to compete in European and World championships. We must highlight the performance of one of these champions, Esperanza, who in just one year has reached the female Top Ten in the world. This club, which has the biggest national team, finishes the season with six Spanish champions in Beach Race (Esperanza Barreras, Benjamin Moreham, Rakele Mannino, Vince Duschneit, Antonio Valero y Luca Boni) and three champions of Spain in Long Distance (Esperanza Barreras, Izaskun Martin y Antonio Valero). Besides, this year, the club prepared a team to take part in the European Circuit where they carried out 5 out of the 12 tests (San Sebastián, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Holland and Germany) getting wonderful results such as those by Nicolas Trujillo and Bárbara Bellavia, who got the podium in the Iberdrola Bilbao World SUP Challenge. In the Race modality, Onexe took part – just in September – in the four most important national competitions this year, from where they brought back a total of ten golden medals; a true challenge not just regarding sports but also regarding logistics and economy, as they have to travel in a trailer with 20 4-meter-long boards. And more successes: Onexe Surfski team took part, for the first time, in the Spanish championship taking place in Mallorca with 4 athletes of the club. The young Iago Camacho Boam, who already enjoyed the Canary Islands champion award, got the second position. All these results could be obtained thanks to Onexe High Performance Centre, the first national centre credited by the Surf Spanish Federation and which has just become one year old. We talked to Óscar Ruiz, coach of the centre. In just one year you have become the best Spanish Sup Club and you have started to have international and even global outreach. What has brought about this important leap? This High Performance Centre has allowed us to talk about high performance training, we have raised the standards a lot. Competing abroad requires not just sacrifice but also persistence, values I instil in my athletes every day. Moreover, it’s not just about training in the water, we are for multi sport: functional training, jog outings, swimming, etc. It’s about assuming a sport life style, full of values and benefits, we even teach them nutrition.

Benjamin Moreham y Esperanza Barreras sultados me dan muchas ganas de seguir entrenando para seguir subiendo puestos. Para mí es un sueño haberme clasificado y representar a España en el Mundial que se celebra en El Salvador a finales de noviembre. Agradecer al Club Onexe y a Nayra Martínez, que nos apoyan para poder hacer estos viajes, y a Iballa Runano y Sonni Honscheit, que siempre nos ayudan, son un ejemplo de deportistas reconocidas a nivel mundial. La otra gran estrella es Benjamin Moreham, el primer niño salido de la cantera de Onexe y con un potencial aun por pulir, que dio el salto a nivel internacional en el 2018 en el mundial de China (categoría Sub 18), pero que a pesar de haberse clasificado para competir en El Salvador, no podrá asistir por no solicitar la doble nacionalidad a tiempo.

FUERTEVENTURA SUP CHALLENGE WAVES & RACE 2019 La última prueba de la temporada será aquí en Fuerteventura, organizada por Onexe. Se trata del FUERTEVENTURA SUP CHALLENGE WAVES & RACE 2019, en su VII edición, que comprende 5 pruebas y que se celebra del 6 al 8 diciembre en Majanicho y en la bahía de Corralejo. La isla majorera se convertirá esos días en el epicentro del SUP, congregando a los mejores riders a nivel nacional e internacional, en el Campeonato de España de SUP Olas y las Copas de España de Race y Beach Race, Campeonato de Canarias de Longboard y Campeonato de Prone_Lifesaving. Además habrá actividades paralelas para todos los públicos. .20

This evolution is also due to well programmed team work, and this is because we have great coaches, Esperanza Barreras (SUP), Mauricio Correa (Surfski) and Javier Cozar (physical trainer) who being high performance athletes themselves also transmit this life style to the youngest athletes. The answer of the team has been most satisfactory, they have showed a great change of mind and a complete dedication: for example, this Summer, 14 to 17-year-old youngsters haven’t just doubled the amount of training time but they’ve also worked in Summer camps we were carrying out in the nautical school. This says a lot about them! How does a coach feel when they can see their work giving such results in such a short period of time? I feel proud of the commitment they have assumed thanks to their motivation and to realising that work always gives results: all the podiums they have got to! It’s important to say that in Onexe we’re a big family, a team in which we motivate one another. When one of us gets a podium, despite being an individual result, all of us consider it as team work, because all of us have sacrificed, trained and motivated together. In one year they’ve reached a standard of training they themselves didn’t know they could reach. They said I was crazy when I told them to row for an hour and a half non stop; now they do it for two hours and they still run for half an hour after that to run flat; they laugh when I remind them (lol) Above all, I feel prouder of this change of mind rather than for the awards, although podiums are necessary to be noticed and to get the funding we need to travel and compete, as carrying so much equipment is really expensive. How does this success affect the Club? The fact of standing out nationally and internationally is making Fuerteventura be known, especially the High Performance Centre; several international riders will come to train with our team to take advantage of our excellent weather and waves during the next Winter season.

ESPERANZA BARRERAS AND BENJAMIN MOREHAM, the two great stars of the club this season The athlete Esperanza Barreras has managed to be among the female top ten with two silver medals (San Sebastián and Holland). She is positive that «this leap has been the result of the kind of training Óscar is carrying out in the High Performance Centre this year, not forgetting that the most important is to have fun and train in group, the team motivates a lot!» How has this changed your life? Now I spend longer in the water (lol). These results make me feel like keeping training to get better results. It’s a dream to have classified and represent Spain in the World Championship that will be celebrated in El Salvador at the end of November. I want to thank Onexe Club and Nayra Martínez, who help us to be able to make these trips, and to Iballa Runano and Sonni Honscheit, who always help us. They are examples of renowned athletes in the world. The other big star is Benjamin Moreham, the first child from Onexe team with a potential still to be developed, who stood out internationally in China world championship 2018 (under 18 category) but who despite having classified to compete in El Salvador won’t be able to attend for not having applied for the double nationality in time.

FUERTEVENTURA SUP CHALLENGE WAVES & RACE 2019 the last event of the season will be here in Fuerteventura, organised by Onexe. We mean FUERTEVENTURA SUP CHALLENGE WAVES & RACE 2019, in its VII edition, consisting of 5 EVENTS, and it’ll be celebrated from December 6th - 8th in Majanicho, in Corralejo bay. Queridos lectores, este mes les traigo algo básico y esencial para vivir una vida plena y cómo no, positiva. Las afirmaciones positivas, también llamadas monólogos constructivos, recordatorios personales o auto-sugerencias, son absolutamente esenciales en la construcción de actitudes positivas y de confianza en nuestras propias capacidades. Pero para que una afirmación sea realmente positiva debe contener los siguientes ingredientes clave: 1. Palabras o frases positivas 2. Debe de ser construida en primera persona y en tiempo presente ( «Yo soy...») 3. H a de ser muy específica sobre lo que quieres («Ser, tener, hacer, etc.») Algunos ejemplos de afirmaciones positivas serían: 1. Soy una persona positiva 2. Soy un gran vendedor 3. Soy capaz de conseguir lo que yo quiera Algunos ejemplos de afirmaciones erróneas serían: 1. Me gustaría ser una persona positiva 2. Tal vez algún día sea un buen vendedor 3. Me gustaría conseguir algo en mi vida ¿Ves la diferencia? Si aplicas las siguientes directrices, podrás comenzar a aprovechar los poderes transformadores de las afirmaciones positivas: — Reemplaza lo negativo por lo positivo. El mismo ambiente en el que vivimos tiende a arrastrarnos constantemente hacia abajo con su negatividad; pero en el momento en que empiezas a usar afirmaciones positivas, puedes elegir desterrar la negatividad y empezar a adoptar las actitudes positivas que te impulsarán hacia el éxito. .22

— Modifica tu pensamiento. Recuerda que tu mente cree en lo que dices. Reprograma tu mente subconsciente mediante el uso de afirmaciones positivas y verás cómo tu mente consciente las transformará en emociones positivas. En esencia, te convertirás en la persona que has afirmado ser. — Personaliza tus propias afirmaciones. Primero necesitas pensar en lo que quieres lograr, trata de especificar lo más posible, luego, con tu respuesta en mente, crea tu propia afirmación en primera persona y en tiempo presente. Así crearás metas concretas y tangibles que te darán una dirección en la que trabajar. — Y por último: Repetir, repetir, repetir. Para que tus afirmaciones sean efectivas, debes repetírtelas todos los días con atención, convicción, interés y deseo. Escríbelas en post its y pégalas a modo recordatorio en tus lugares más frecuentes como la puerta de la nevera, el baño, el salón... ¿Estás preparad@? Escúchate y trata de localizar creencias limitantes que te repites a diario. Escríbelas en la columna de la izquierda. Ahora, busca la afirmación positiva que vas a repetir a diario, hasta convertirla en realidad. CREENCIA LIMITANTE

Dear readers, this month I give you something basic and essential to live a full and - why not - positive life. Positive affirmations, also known as constructive monologues, personal reminders or self-talk scripts, are absolutely essential to build positive attitudes and self-confidence in our own abilities. But, for an affirmation to be really positive, it must have the following key ingredients: 1. Positive words or statements 2. First-person singular and present tense (use, for example, «I am…») 3. Specific focus on what you want (use «to be, to have, to do…») Some examples of positive affirmations would be: 1. I am a positive person 2. I am a great salesperson 3. I can do whatever I want Some examples of wrong affirmations would be: 1. I would like to be a positive person 2. I may possibly be a good salesperson some day 3. I would like to achieve something in my life Can you spot the difference? If you stick to the following guidelines, you can start enjoying the transforming powers of positive affirmations: — Replace negativity with positivity. What happens around us is constantly dragging us down with its negativity; but when you start using positive affirmations, you can decide to get rid of negativity and start adopting the positive thinking that will lead you to success. — Change your thinking. Remember that your mind believes in what you tell it. Reprogramme your subconscious mind by using positive affirmations and you’ll see how your conscious mind will turn them into positive emotions. Basically, you’ll become the person you said you’d be.
