CHUCHO VALDÉS CONCIERTO EN FUERTEVENTURA EL 22 DE MARZO
El genial pianista y compositor cubano, Chucho Valdés, ganador de varios premios Grammy, visitará Fuerteventura el próximo 22 de marzo, con motivo de su gira mundial presentando su disco ‘Jazz Batá 2’. La cita será en el Palacio de Formación y Congresos, de la mano de la Asociación Cultural Isla y Ritmo, Producciones Volcánicas y Amusic Production Texto: Ana González El disco «Jazz Batá 2» es una firme apuesta por recuperar algo que el artista ya puso en práctica en 1972; un trío Jazz con tambores batá en lugar de la percusión habitual. Estos tambores, con forma de reloj de arena, son tradicionales de la religión Yoruba o Santería. Temas como ‘Obatalá’, ‘Ochún’ o ‘100 años de Bebo’, completan un emocionante concierto en el que el pianista compartirá con el público lo mejor de su música, con un claro compromiso con la naturaleza y las tradiciones. Los canarios estamos de suerte porque sus únicas citas en España, serán el 20 de marzo en el Teatro Insular Victor Fernández Gopar, El Salinero, en Lanzarote, el 21 de marzo en el Teatro Leal en La Laguna Tenerife, el 22 de marzo en Fuerteventura y otra fecha más en Asturias. Valdés viene acompañado por excepcionales músicos como: Dreiser Durruthy en el batá y percusiones, Yaroldy Abreu, congas y percusiones y Ramón Vázquez al contrabajo. Un conjunto que asegura calidad y buen gusto en las interpretaciones, en un concierto que no te puedes perder. Chucho nació en Chivicán en 1941 y su primera influencia fue el mambo, que su propio padre, también pianista, interpretaba con gran calidad, junto al jazz norteamericano con influencias del rico folclore cubano. Con tan sólo 16 años Valdés ya era pianista en la orquesta de su padre. Conocer y estar bajo las órdenes del popular compositor Leo Brouwer en la Orquesta del Teatro Musical de La Habana, le sirvió a Chucho para elevar a otra dimensión su conocimiento sobre armonía, que luego marcarían su estilo de composición. En esos años llegaría «Chucho Valdés y su combo», luego en 1967 Armando Romeu lo fichó para
la Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, y en 1973 llegó la mítica Irakere, donde la fusión fue la protagonista absoluta; con percusiones africanas, dibujos con escalas jazz al piano, guitarras, oportunamente distorsionadas con pedales de wah-wah y fuzz, y algunos vientos metales. Es casi imposible resumir todo lo que este artista ha aportado a la cultura mundial; hablamos de 87 discos, unas 33 colaboraciones oficiales con otros proyectos musicales y 10 premios Grammy en varias categorías.
UN ARTISTA COMPROMETIDO Chucho imparte clases de música en el Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana y clases magistrales en universidades por todo el mundo. Al margen de un genial músico, es un hombre comprometido con la sociedad y con los más desfavorecidos. The senior Cuban pianist and composer, Chucho Valdés, will visit Fuerteventura next March 22nd on the occasion of his world tour, presenting his record ‘Jazz Batá 2’. The appointment will be in Palacio de Formación y Congresos, by Asociación Cultural Isla y Ritmo, Producciones Volcánicas and Amusic Production. «Jazz Batá 2» is a clear commitment to recover what the artist had already presented in 1972: A Jazz triplet with bata drums instead of the habitual percussion. These drums, sand timer-shaped, are traditional in Yoruba or Santeria religions. Themes as «Obatalá», «Ochún» or «100 años de Bebo» complete an exciting concert
where the pianist will share his best music with the audience, with a clear commitment to nature and traditions. In those years, «Chucho Valdés y su combo» appeared; then, in 1967 he was taken on by Armando Romeu to join his Cuban band of modern music; and in 1973, the mythical Irakere turned up, and the fusion was the absolute protagonist, with African percussion, drawings with jazz scales on the piano and guitar appropriately distorted by wah-wah and fuzz stomp boxes, and some brass horns. It’s almost impossible to sum up everything this artist has contributed to the world culture; we’re talking about 87 records, 33 official partnerships with other musical projects and 10 Grammy awards in several categories.

LA LUCHA CONTRA EL PLÁSTICO

«Los microplásticos están funcionando como transportadores de contaminantes perjudiciales para la salud humana y ambiental por todo el océano» Texto de Eloy Vera
Bárbara Abaroa es licenciada en Ciencias del Mar e investigadora predoctoral de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Forma parte de ese grupo de jóvenes que lideran la lucha contra el plástico. Su línea de investigación se centra en desarrollar una metodología para determinar contaminantes en diferentes muestras marinas. También ha llevado a cabo un proyecto en 2018, con el respaldo del Cabildo majorero, en busca de contaminantes químicos persistentes en los microplásticos marinos que llegan a las costas de Fuerteventura. ¿En qué consistió el estudio que llevó a cabo en 2018? Se trató de recoger microplásticos, todos aquellos plásticos por debajo de 5 milímetros, de las costas de Fuerteventura y determinar la concentración de contaminantes químicos persistentes que llevaban adheridos. Estudié diez playas, seis de la zona oeste, ya que se trata de la más expuesta a la corriente del Atlántico norte, y cuatro de la zona este para comparar las diferencias entre las dos zonas. ¿Qué conclusiones arrojó el estudio? Como en estudios anteriores, la zona oeste presentaba mayor cantidad de microplásticos, pero el objetivo principal del estudio era determinar los contaminantes químicos persistentes que venían adheridos a estos microplásticos. Solo estudié los conocidos pellets, microplástico primario (son bolitas) y determiné la concentración de contaminantes que llevaban consigo. Todos los microplásticos presentaban mayor o menos proporción de contaminantes, pesticidas, PCBs e hidrocarburos. Nos encontrábamos en los .6
pellets contaminantes que llevan prohibidos décadas en la Unión Europea y que se encuentran dentro de la «docena sucia» del Convenio de Estocolmo por sus características cancerígenas y mutagénicas. Entre ellos, encontramos concentración de DDT, un pesticida que en Canarias funcionaba muy bien, dejando la fruta y verdura intacta pero que sus características cancerígenas favorecían el desarrollo de cáncer de mamá, por ejemplo. También se encontraron concentraciones de PCB, así como beta-HCH que es un pesticida que se relaciona con enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el alzhéimer o el párkinson. Los micro-
plásticos están funcionando como transportadores de este tipo de contaminantes perjudiciales para la salud humana y ambiental por todo el océano. ¿De dónde están llegando los plásticos que aparecen en el mar de Fuerteventura? Es difícil de decir. Hay que tener en cuenta las corrientes, pero también los remolinos que se forman alrededor de las islas. Existen estudios físicos que modelan la trayectoria de los plásticos por el océano y comentan que lo que llega a Canarias probablemente sea de la zona oeste de África, la Península Ibérica y toda la parte este del continente americano. Según los estudios físicos y estadísticos, lo que tarda más tiempo en llegar sería lo que viene del continente americano y lo más nuevo es de África o la Península Ibérica, pero hay que tener en cuenta que esta conecta ríos con Asia. Al final, nos llega de todas partes. ¿Qué consecuencias pueden tener los microplásticos con pesticidas para la salud del ser humano? En su momento se prohibieron todos estos pesticidas y contaminantes porque ya se había visto que optimizaban el desarrollo de determinadas enfermedades como el cáncer y el párkinson. El estudio de beta-HCH demostraba que los pacientes que tenían un estado avanzado de alzhéimer tenían una concentración mucho mayor de beta-HCH que otros que no tenían un estado avanzado de esta enfermedad. Estamos hablando todo el tiempo de características cancerígenas y mutagénicas. Se ha visto también en larvas pequeñas de crustáceos que afectan a la fertilidad del animal o crean mutaciones que pueden afectar luego a la cadena trófica. Hace unas semanas, apareció muerta una tortuga en aguas majoreras. Tras realizarle una necropsia, se descubrió una bolsa de plástico. ¿Cómo afecta el tema de los plásticos y microplásticos a la fauna marina? Afecta de dos formas. De forma directa, hablamos de millones de muertes de diferentes especies marinas. Entre ellas, las más afectadas son las tortugas, las aves y los cetáceos por el contacto directo con el plástico, ya sea por ingesta del mismo, provocando asfixia o por quedarse enredado en diferentes basuras marinas, lo que se conoce como pesca fantasma, donde estas artes de pesca olvidadas en la mar siguen provocando muertes. «Microplastics are working as pollutant conveyors, detrimental to humans and environment, all over the ocean» By Eloy Vera Bárbara Abaroa is a graduate in ocean sciences and a predoctoral researcher in the University of Palmas de Gran Canaria. She is member of a group of young people leading a fight against plastic. Their line of research is focused on developing a methodology to determine the pollutants in different marine samples. They’ve also undertaken a project with the support by Fuerteventura island council, in 2018, searching for persistent chemical pollutants in the marine microplastics getting to Fuerteventura’s coastline. What did the research you carried out in 2018 consist of? It was about picking up microplastics, the ones that were under 5mm, from Fuerteventura’s coastline and determine the concentration of persistent chemical pollutants that were attached to them. I studied 10 beaches, six out of them in the west, as it was the most exposed one to the northern Atlantic current, and four in the east, to point out the differences between the two areas.
What conclusions did the research yield? Just like in previous studies, the eastern coast presented a bigger amount of microplastics, but the main target of the research was to determine the persistent chemical pollutants attached to them. I just studied the well-known pellets, primary microplastic (little balls) and I determined the concentration of pollutants they take with them. All the microplastics carried a smaller or bigger amount of pollutants, pesticides, PBCs and hydrocarbon. We found pollutants that have been banned for over 10 years by the European Union on pellets and that are within the «dirty dozen» of the Stockholm convention, due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. Among them we find an accumulation of DDT, a pesticide that used to work quite well in the Canary Islands, leaving fruit and vegetables intact, although its carcinogenic characteristics favoured the development of breast cancer, for example. Concentration of PBC was also found, as well as beta-HCH, a pesticide related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer or Parkinson. Microplastics are working as pollutant conveyors, detrimental to humans and environment, all over the ocean. Where are the plastics appearing in Fuerteventura’s sea coming from? It’s difficult to say. We must take the currents into account, but also the whirlwinds that form around the islands. There’re physical researches on the trajectory of plastics throughout the ocean and say that what arrives in the Canary Islands is probably coming from the east of Africa or the Iberian Peninsula but we must bear in mind that they connect rivers to Asia. In the end, they’re coming from everywhere.
What consequences may microplastics with pesticides have on the human health? All these pesticides and pollutants had been banned because they were proven to favour the development of certain diseases such as cancer or Parkinson. The research about beta-HCH showed that the patients with advanced stages of Alzheimer had a much bigger concentration of beta-HCH than others who weren’t on such an advanced stage. We’re always talking about carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. It’s also been seen on small larvae of crustacean that affect the fertility of the animals or create mutations that can affect the food chain later on. Some weeks ago, a dead turtle appeared in Fuerteventura’s waters. After a necropsy, a plastic bag was discovered. How does the issue of plastics and microplastics affect the marine fauna? It affects in two different ways: directly we’re talking about deaths of millions of different sea species. Among them, the most affected ones are turtles, birds and cetacean due to their direct contact to plastic, either by eating it, which causes death by asphyxia, or because they get tangled among diverse marine debris, which is known as ghost fishing, where these forgotten fishing gears keep causing deaths. We’re also witnessing how many species, as marine birds, are feeding microplastics to their broods, which hinders their development so they never reach the adult age. Indirectly, microplastics carry their own pollutants with them plus the ones they get throughout their ocean journey. When an animal ingests a microplastic, for example, it can manage to

bién, se está viendo que muchas especies, como algunas aves marinas ya le dan de comer a sus crías microplásticos, por lo que dificulta su desarrollo y nunca llegan a la fase adulta. De manera indirecta, los microplásticos llevan consigo contaminantes propios más los que se les adhiere por toda su trayectoria en el océano. Cuando un animal ingiere un microplástico por ejemplo, puede llegar a expulsarlo, pero la concentración de contaminantes es más afín a sus ácidos grasos, por lo que todos esos contaminantes se quedarán en el animal, provocando diferentes enfermedades y mutaciones. Ya se ha evidenciado que el zooplancton, productores primarios de la cadena trófica, ingieren microplástico, produciendo mutaciones, bajo desarrollo de los mismos. Esto provoca que ya se transporten también desde un principio por la cadena alimenticia sin que los consumidores hayan ingerido plástico en ningún momento. También, por ejemplo, existen estudios científicos que demuestran que hay moluscos que están sufriendo infertilidad por la ingesta de microplásticos. ¿Qué playas son las más contaminadas por plásticos en estos momentos en Fuerteventura? En Fuerteventura se han hecho varios estudios. Primero fue Baztán, que fue el pionero y quien demostró que Canarias estaba recibiendo muchísima basura. Luego le han seguido muchos investigadores y lo que más se ve es que es toda la parte oeste de Fuerteventura, la más expuesta por la corriente del Atlántico norte, la que más recibe plástico. ¿En qué consiste tu trabajo predoctoral? Estudio diferentes metodologías para determinar contaminantes en diferentes muestras marinas, pero dentro de la línea de investigación, nos centramos mucho en los microplásticos, y también tenemos una línea centrada en estudiar qué está pasando en la columna de agua. Es decir, de los cero metros a los 600 metros de profundidad. Junto a la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y la Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias hemos ido haciendo varias campañas y filtramos 72 litros de agua en diferentes profundidades. Las muestras demuestran concentración de microplásticos en la columna de agua. Lo que más encontramos son las fibras de ropa, fibras de redes de pesca y pequeñas fracturas de microplásticos. Hablamos que, a 600 metros, aún encontramos microplásticos y eso es un problema porque demuestra que afecta a la fauna de la columna de agua. La pregunta de siempre, ¿qué podemos hacer para reducir el consumo de plásticos? El problema está en el uso excesivo que tenemos hoy día del plástico. Creo que lo más importante es vol.8

Se trata de hacer un cambio de rutina en el día a día. Si vamos cambiando localmente se llega a un cambio global y se deja de producir tanto. Lo ideal es reducir el plástico. Va a ser difícil acabar con el microplástico en el océano, pero no es imposible. Creo que es vital apoyar todas las investigaciones sobre este tema y combatir la desinformación porque si no sabemos qué ocurre con los microplásticos no se puede combatir contra ello, la concienciación es muy importante. Es importante trabajar en un modelo circular donde el plástico existente se use reciclado para evitar que se produzca más. Es hora de actuar, de tomar medidas reguladoras contra el uso excesivo de plástico.

It’s already been proven that zooplankton, primary producers of the food chain, eat microplastics, thus producing mutations as they develop. This makes it possible for microplastics to be present from the very beginning of the food chain without consumers having eaten plastic at any moment. Moreover, there’re also scientific researches that prove that some molluscs are suffering infertility due to the intake of microplastics.

Several researches have taken place in Fuerteventura. First it was Baztán, who was the pioneer and proved that The Canary Islands were getting very much debris. Then, many researchers followed and it could be proven that it was the western side of Fuerteventura, the most exposed to the northern Atlantic current, that was getting the biggest amount of plastic. What does your predoctoral work consists of? We study different methodologies to determine pollutants in different marine organisms, but within the line of research we focus on microplastics and we also have a line focused on studying what is happening in the water column, that is, from 0 to 600 metres deep. Together with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias, we’ve been making several campaigns and we filtered 72 litres of water in different depths. The samples show a concentration of microplastics in the water column. What we find most are clothing fibres, fibres of fishing nets and small fragments of microplastics. We are saying that 600 mts deep we can still find microplastics, which is a problem, as it proves that it’s affecting the fauna in the entire water column. The eternal question, what can we do to reduce the plastic consumption? The problem lies in the excessive use of plastics we make nowadays. I think the most important thing is to go back to traditional habits, to what our grandparents used to do, such as using the shopping basket and returnable containers. It’s all about making a change in the day-to-day routine. If we start changing individually, in time we’ll get a global change and they’ll stop producing so much. The target must be to reduce plastic. It’ll be difficult to get rid of all the microplastic in the ocean, but it isn’t impossible. It’s vital to support all the research on this issue and fight the lack of information, as if we don’t know what is happening with microplastics we can’t fight it, awareness is very important. It’s important to work in a circular model where the existent plastic can be recycled to avoid having to produce more. It’s time to act, take regulatory measures against the excessive use of plastic.

SAN BUENAVENTURA Una joya histórica en el corazón de Betancuria Texto: Ana González
Betancuria fue la primera capital de Fuerteventura desde la conquista de la isla en 1402 liderada por el noble Jean de Bethencourt y el militar Gadifer de la Salle. Pero en el siglo XIX, tras haber incluso resistido una invasión berberisca en el siglo XVI, su poder económico fue bajando en beneficio de otras poblaciones que crecían más rápidamente, como La Oliva o Pájara, hasta que actualmente es uno del los núcleos urbanos de Fuerteventura que menos población tiene. La antigua capital conserva los vestigios de lo que un día fue. No hay que olvidar que Betancuria fue el lugar elegido por el Papá Martín V en 1424 para eregir el fugaz Obispado de Fuerteventura. La historia del lugar está vinculada a la religión católica y a la orden de los Franciscanos, que fueron los encargados de evangelizar las islas durante el siglo XV. Entre todos los lugares que puedes visitar en Betancuria, hay uno con gran historia, y que durante siglos ha permanecido en silencio, contemplando el paso de los años con serenidad. Hablamos del Convento Franciscano de San Buenaventura, una increíble construcción que se remonta al año 1423 y que fue la morada de los franciscanos que viajaron a las islas para su evangelización. Los muros del convento han permanecido indestructibles al paso de la historia como memoria viva de la importancia del lugar y su cometido. Dentro del Convento encontramos la tumba de Diego García de Herrera, uno de los célebres conquistadores que falleció en 1485. Este hidalgo sevillano, fue un señor territorial de las Islas Canarias en el siglo XV, y se autoproclamó Rey de las Islas, hasta que se las cedió a los Reyes Católicos en 1477. .10

a historical jewel in the core of Betancuria Text: Ana González Betancuria was the first capital of Fuerteventura since the conquest of the island in 1402 by the noble Jean de Bethencourt and the soldier Gadifer de la Salle. In the XIX century, after having resisted a Berber invasion in the XVI century, its economic power declined in favour of other populations that were quickly growing, such as La Oliva or Pájara, and nowadays it’s one of the least populated urban areas in Fuerteventura.
The ancient capital keeps the remains of what it was one day. We mustn’t forget that Betancuria was the chosen site by the Pope Martín V in 1424 to erect the brief bishopric of Fuerteventura. The history of this place is linked to the catholic religion and the order of Franciscans, who were in charge of evangelizing the islands during the XV century. Among all the places you can visit in Betancuria there is one with great history and that has remained silent for centuries, withstanding the passage of time with serenity. We’re talking about the Franciscan Convent of San Buenaventura, an incredible construction that dates back to 1423 and was the dwelling of the Franciscans that came to the Islands to evangelize them. Fray Pedro de Pemía y Fray Juan de Baeza dieron su conformidad en 1416 para la construcción de este Convento que fue el primero de Fuerteventura, y de Canarias, y que pretendía convertirse en la sede nodriza para la evangelización del resto de islas. Benedicto XIII asumió personalmente la puesta en marcha de este proyecto que contemplaba la construcción del convento, y organizó varias bulas para recolectar fondos para su construcción. .12
Sus primeros moradores célebres, como San Diego de Alcalá, nombrado guardián del convento, y Fray Juan de Santorcaz, hacen entender la importancia que tenía para la iglesia católica este emplazamiento. El convento fue ampliado por Diego de Herrera, tras su toma de posesión del Señorío en 1455, con el fin de mejorar las celdas y hacer más amplia la iglesia. La arquitectura de estilo puramente gótica, cuenta con una planta de cruz latina, con dos puertas de entrada.
La construcción estaba apuntalada con arcos de media punta de cantera, y desde 1979 forma parte del conjunto Histórico de Betancuria. Un lugar que debes visitar para comprender mejor la historia que da origen a la Islas Canarias tal y como las conocemos hoy en día. Es de una indiscutible belleza, tanto por el entorno en el que se empleza como por su peculiar arquitectura.

and its mission. Inside the Convent we find the burial of Diego García de Herrera, one of the famous conquerors who died in 1485. This Sevillian nobleman was a territorial lord in the Canary Islands in the XV century, and he named himself King of the Islands until he handed it over to the Catholic Monarchs in 1477. Fray Pedro de Pemía and Fray Juan de Baeza agreed to the building of this Convent in 1416, which first belonged to Fuerteventura and The Canary Islands and then it intended to become the Holy See for the evangelization of the rest of islands. Benedicto XIII committed personally to the setting up of this project that worked towards building this Convent, and he organised several bulls to raise funds for its construction. Its first popular dwellers, San Diego de Alcalá, appointed guard of the Convent, and Fray Juan de Satorcaz, make us understand the importance the catholic church had in this location. Ni popcorn, ni palomitas… son Rodolitos y se tienen que quedar donde están Hace unos dos años, una instagramer de visita en Fuerteventura colgó una foto en las redes sociales en la playa de El Hierro con el hashtag #PopCornBeach. Probablemente no era consciente del profundo daño que estaba a punto de comenzar… la publicación se viralizó rápidamente, miles de personas siguieron el desafortunado ejemplo y la consecuencia es desoladora: ahora mismo hay más rodolitos en Instagram que en la playa. Pero ¿qué son los rodolitos y por qué son tan importantes? Para empezar, cualquier elemento de la naturaleza es imprescindible donde está. Siempre cumple una función y alterarlo de cualquier manera produce un efecto en cadena que destruye el entorno y la biodiversidad. En el caso de los rodolitos, estos son, en pocas palabras, la arena que formará las playas de mañana. Playas que no existirán si no los dejamos donde están. ¿Quieres saber más? Están hechos de algas que se agrupan en torno a una pequeña piedra y van formando una «bolita». Este proceso tiene lugar entre Fuerteventura y .14
Lanzarote, lejos de la costa y a una profundidad entre veinte y treinta metros. Después, los rodolitos son depositados en la costa por las corrientes marinas, y forman el curioso paisaje de esas playas de bolitas blancas y relucientes que, cuando se fragmentan por la erosión del mar y del aire, se convierten en la arena de nuestras playas, una arena muy blanca, especial y característica de la zona. Todo este larguísimo proceso de la naturaleza no debería de terminar nunca dentro del jarrón de una casa. Los paneles de medio ambiente, instalados en varias zonas de la costa afectadas por esta problemática, tratan de concienciar a las personas que las visitan sobre la importancia de dejar el paisaje como está, pero si la vía de la conciencia ambiental no funciona, advierten también que cualquier elemento extraído del paisaje será retirado en el aeropuerto y podrá ser sometido a una sanción. A ver si aprenden.
Obras de desastre: los montículos de piedras
Grabados y otras extravagancias
El Ayuntamiento de La Oliva está demostrando una importante y necesaria Actitud Ambiental, así como muchos vecinos del norte de la isla que están aportando su granito de arena para concienciar a todo el mundo en los valores de respeto y cuidado de la naturaleza… pero queda mucho camino. Hasta que la conciencia ambiental no llegue a todas y cada una de las personas que habitan o visitan nuestro paraíso, estará en peligro.
No tirar basura en cualquier lado, no circular con vehículos por fuera de las pistas… puede resultar algo muy lógico pero todavía hay gente que parece no darse cuenta del terrible daño que causa a la naturaleza por no respetar unas normas sencillas. Ni qué decir tiene la extravagancia de hacer grabados, grafitis o dibujitos en las rocas. El caso del Barranco del Jable es uno de los más alarmantes en este sentido, pues está formado de arena -de ahí su propio nombre, del «Jable»- lo que lo convierte en una obra de la naturaleza de extrema sensibilidad. Si alguien cree que grabando su nombre en las laderas del barranco está dejando su marca para el futuro, que sepa que no es así; en el futuro, y además cercano, el barranco no existirá si no dejamos de hacer esas tonterías. La estructura del barranco está hecha de una arena que en la capa exterior se encuentra solidificada por el paso de muchos años, una capa que hace de protección del impresionante paisaje. Si ésta se destruye, ya no habrá freno para la erosión de las capas internas de arena suelta y… adiós maravilla de la naturaleza.
Los alrededores del faro de El Tostón, en El Cotillo, son el escenario de otra de las prácticas más nocivas para el equilibrio del medio ambiente: hacer montículos agrupando piedras. Estas montañitas no solo estropean y afean el paisaje, sino suponen un ataque al entorno natural. Las piedras cumplen una importante función en el entorno, contribuyen a frenar la erosión del viento y son el refugio de especies animales y vegetales, por lo que hacer montículos, moverlas de su sitio o alterarlas de cualquier manera provoca alteraciones del hábitat natural. Y para quienes no saben que las piedras hay que dejarlas como están por mero sentido común, ahí también se han instalado carteles que informan y educan al respecto.

LITTERING ANYWHERE, BURYING FAG-ENDS IN THE SAND, TAKING STONES AND PIECES OF NATURE HOME, SPOILING THE LANDSCAPE WITH MOTOR VEHICLES, ENGRAVING AND MAKING GRAFFITIES…. ARE THERE PEOPLE WHO DON’T THINK THIS IS NON-SENSE? IT SEEMS THERE ARE, AND THIS IS WHY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT IN THE TOWNHALL OF LA OLIVA, WITHIN THE INITIATIVE «LA OLIVA, ACTITUD AMBIENTAL», WHICH IS GETTING TO ALL THE CORNERS OF THIS MUNICIPALITY, IS POSTING INFORMATION SIGNS IN THREE LANGUAGES WITH THE AIM OF PREVENTING SOME OF THE MOST HARMFUL PRACTICES THAT RALLY AGAINST THE INTEGRITY AND PRESERVATION OF THE LANDSCAPE, BIODIVERSITY AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. They aren’t popcorn or «palomitas»… They are RHODOLITHS and they must stay where they are. Some two years ago, an «instagramer», visitor of Fuerteventura, uploaded a picture of «Playa del Hierro» in the social nets, with the hashtag #PopCornBeach. Probably he wasn’t aware of the serious harm he was about to bring about… The publication spread quickly, thousands of people followed this unfortunate illustration and the consequence’s been is horrifying: now the’re more rhodoliths in Instagram than on the beach. But what are rhodoliths and why are they so important? To begin with, any element in nature is essential where it is. It always plays a role and disrupting it in any way destroys the environment and biodiversity. In the case of rhodoliths, they are, in few words, the sand of tomorrow’s beaches. Beaches that won’t exist if we don’t leave them where they are. Would you like to get more details? They’re made of seaweed that gathers around a small stone and it forms a little ball. This process takes place between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, away from the coast, and between twenty and thirty metres deep. Then these balls are taken to the coast by marine currents and they make up the interesting landscape of these beaches of white and shiny balls that, when fragmented by sea and wind erosion they turn into sand on our beaches, a very white, special and characteristic sand of our area. All this very long process of nature should never end up inside the vase of a home. Environmental boards, set up in several areas of the coast affected by this issue, try to make visitors aware of the importance of leaving the landscape as it is, but if environmental
awareness doesn’t work they’re also warned that any item taken out of the landscape will be confiscated in the airport and they can also be fined. Let’s see if they learn this way. Engravings and other eccentricities Not to litter anywhere, not to drive vehicles outside the tracks… may seem a very logical premise but there’re still many people who seem not to realise the terrible harm they’re causing to nature by not respecting such easy rules. Let alone the eccentricity of making engravings, graffities or drawings on the rocks. The case of the ravine of Jable is one of the most alarming ones in this respect as it’s made up of sand – hence its name, «Jable» – which turns it into a work of nature of extreme sensitivity. If anyone believes that by engraving their name on the sides of the ravine, they’re leaving their print for the future, be aware that this isn’t the case; in a future, and a near one, the ravine won’t exist if we don’t stop doing silly things. The structure of the ravine is made of sand whose external layer’s been solidified over many years, a layer that’s acted as protection of that impressive landscape. If it’s destroyed there’ll be further erosion in the inner layers of loose sand and…. Goodbye to this wonder of nature. Terrible Works: stone cairns. The surroundings of El Tostón Lighthouse, in El Cotillo, are the stage of another most harmful practice to the environmental balance: making stone cairns These small stone heaps don’t only spoil and make the landscape ugly but they mean an attack to the natural environment. Stones play an important role in the environment; they contribute to prevent the wind erosion and are the shelter of animal and botanical species, reason why making these piles, moving them or altering them in any way causes habitat disturbance. And for those who don’t know that stones must be left where they are out of common sense, information boards have also been set up to educate and report on it. The townhall in La Oliva is proving the important and necessary environmental attitude, as well as many neighbours in the north of the island who are making their bit to make the whole world aware of the values of respect and care of nature… but there’s still a long way to go. Not until environmental awareness reaches every single person inhabiting or visiting our paradise will it be out of danger.

GRAN ACTUACIÓN DEL EQUIPO ONEXE DE SURFSKI EN LA I COPA DE CANARIAS
Un total de 13 riders de surfski del Team Onexe representaron a Fuerteventura en la I Copa de Canarias de Surfski celebrada en Lanzarote los días 7 y 8 de febrero en la que se concentraron más de un centenar de palistas de las categorías juniors y élite regional.

La competición tuvo lugar en la playa de El Reducto de Arrecife, en la que se dieron las condiciones idóneas para disfrutar de esta disciplina deportiva, un viento constante y mar en calma con poca oleaje. Un evento marcado por la gran cantidad de público que se concentró para seguir la prueba tanto desde la playa como desde la Avenida Marítima de Arrecife. También este fin de semana, Lanzarote fue sede de otra gran competición, la Atlantic Ocean Surfski Lanzarote World Cup 2020, prueba del circuito mundial, que congregó a 350 palistas de hasta 19 nacionalidades distintas; entre ellos, deportistas de alto nivel como los sudafricanos Brigitte Hartley ( medallista olímpica en Londres) y Sean Rice (actual campeón mundial de la especialidad) y los españoles Walter Bouzán y Esteban Medina (oro y bronce, respectivamente, en los Juegos Mediterráneo 2019). Esta gran prueba se desarrolló en tres etapas: con salida desde Arrieta, Costa Teguise y Arrecife, finalizando en Puerto del Carmen tras 40 kilómetros. La segunda
GREAT PERFORMANCE OF ONEXE TEAM IN THE SURFSKI CUP OF THE ISLANDS
A total of 13 surfski riders of the Onexe Team represented Fuerteventura in the Surfski Cup of the Canary Islands. It took place in Lanzarote on February 7th and 8th, where over one hundred Kayakers of the junior and regional elite categories came together.
The competition took place in the beach of El Reducto de Arrecife, where they met ideal conditions to enjoy this sport discipline, constant wind and calm sea with few waves. An event that stood out for the large audience that congregated there to follow the event from the beach and the Avenida Marítima of Arrecife alike. Lanzarote was also host for another great event that weekend: the 2020 Atlantic Ocean Surski World Cup of Lanzarote, which gathered 350 kayakers from up to 19 different nationalities, among them, high performance athletes such as the South Africans Brigitte Hartley (Olympic medallist in London) and Sean Rice (current world champion of this speciality) and the Spaniards Walter Bouzán and Esteban Medina (gold and bronze respectively, in the 2019 Mediterranean Games). This great event developed in three different stages: departures from Arrieta, Costa Teguise and Arrecife, ending in Puerto del Carmen after 40 kilometres. The second day of the Surfski Cup of the Canary Islands coincided with the third stage of this great event, so the young Onexe Team met these great international canoeists in the water. The Canary Islands’ cup concluded on Sunday, February 8th, with an award ceremony that was held in Puerto del Carmen and was attended by José Perurena, president of the international federation of Kayak, and Manolo López, General manager of Sports in the Canary Islands Government.

VALENTÍN CLAVERAS autor de Nieve y arena
«La obra muestra la árida soledad de Fuerteventura y la espiritualidad de sus campos» Texto de Eloy Vera Valentín Claveras es aragonés, pero lleva 42 años viviendo en Canarias y muchos años más sumando lecturas. Un día se tropezó con Francisco Ramírez Viu, un profesor de talleres de creación literaria que lo transformó de voraz lector a escritor. En su currículo figuran El hombre de la bicicleta, un libro de relatos titulado Desde aquí y Bajo la luz de las horas, una obra coral salida de los Talleres de Ramírez Viu. Además, es coautor del libro de poemas Lo personal y poético. Nieve y arena es su primera novela. ¿Cómo surge Nieve y arena? Surge a partir de un suceso en Costa Calma, donde trabajo en la Oficina de Atención al Ciudadano. Un día, un señor alemán, que ya falleció, acudió a mí y me dijo: Valentín ayer se murió Josef, el de la bicicleta. Yo ya había escrito sobre él un cuento: El hombre de la bicicleta. El alemán me dijo tienes que saber dónde está enterrado para llevarle flores, pero Josef estuvo durante meses en una cámara en la funeraria. La novela nace a partir de este señor que acude a mí para decirme que alguien ha

muerto. A partir de ahí, sentí la necesidad de averiguar sobre Josef, que conocía un poco, y que había muerto como un indigente en los baños públicos de un centro comercial de Costa Calma. Tardé cinco años en escribir Nieve y arena. ¿Qué se encuentra el lector que se acerca a este libro? Se va a encontrar, en primer lugar, cómo el hilo de la historia es una excusa para contar una historia de forma cronológica, que va de enero, cuando se lo encuentran hasta que lo entierran, seis meses después. El hilo es esa trayectoria. También es el acercamiento a Fuerteventura, un acercamiento que ya se inicia con Fuerteventura bajo la luz de las horas y, por otro lado, muestra la árida soledad de Fuerteventura, el silencio de los nevados paisajes de Austria y la espiritualidad de los campos de ambos lados en invierno. La obra cuenta la evolución personal del señor que está en la Oficina al Ciudadano, que se llama Pablo, al final de una carrera y después de haber estado en lo más alto y lo más bajo. Pasa de ser una persona pegada a lo material, a lo espiritual. También es una historia sentimental y una forma de retirarse de esa relación para encontrarse con él.
al ser humano no es la sensibilidad sensiblera sino la compasión honda. ¿Qué obras y autores le han inspirado a la hora de escribir la novela? En la manera de describir han sido los escritores rusos como Mijaíl Shólojov. Su obra El Don apacible tiene unas descripciones sencillas de la naturaleza y de la vida diaria. También, los clásicos españoles, Miguel Delibes, Rulfo, García Márquez y un poeta argentino desconocido que se llama Roberto Juarroz. ¿Qué diferencia esta novela del resto de obras que ha escrito con anterioridad? El atrevimiento y el trabajo. La calidad es la misma.
¿Qué le llama la atención del personaje de Josef «el vagabundo» para dedicarle un cuento y luego convertirlo en protagonista de su primera novela? El desprendimiento, el acercamiento a lo espiritual, el desnudarse poco a poco. No es vano que el hombre vaya desnudo por la calle empujando la bicicleta cuyas ruedas están pinchadas. Llevando en dos cajas todo lo que necesita para vivir.
¿Cómo ha sido el peregrinaje por el mundo de las editoriales? Ha sido paciente. Mandé la novela durante dos años a diferentes editoriales. También, me presenté a un concurso de la editorial Tandaia, pero no gané nada. Sin embargo, me dijeron que la nove la les había gustado tanto y estaba tan bien escrita que podían intentar publicarla. Se hizo un crowdfunding y en tres semanas tenía los 1.000 euros que hacían falta.
La novela trata temas como el amor, la generosidad, ¿por qué recurre a estos temas tan representados en la literatura universal? La compasión. El amor y la generosidad muchas veces están disfrazados de muchas cosas. En realidad, te amas a ti mismo y eres generoso con los demás porque sabes que lo serán contigo. Para mí lo que identifica
Durante esos seis meses, que transcurren desde que aparece el cadáver de Josef hasta que lo entierran, ¿qué le sorprende de la sociedad? En realidad, no me sorprende casi nada, pero sí fue un toque de atención para ver qué lejos de la realidad vivimos todos porque estamos en nuestro ombligo única y exclusivamente.

«The book shows the arid loneliness of Fuerteventura and the spirituality of its fields» By Eloy Vera Valentín Claveras is from Aragon, but he’s been living in The Canary Islands for 42 years and many more years if we add up readings. One day he came across Francisco Ramírez Viu, a teacher of literary creation workshops who turned him into a writer, already being a vivid reader. In his curriculum we find El hombre de la bicicleta, a story book titled Desde aquí y Bajo la luz de las horas, a core work that emerged from Ramírez Viu’s workshops. Moreover, he’s co-writer of the book of poems: Lo personal y poético. Nieve y arena is his first novel. How does Nieve y arena arise? It arises after an event in Costa Calma, where I work in the citizen’s service office. One day, a German sir, who is already dead, came and told me: «Valentín, Josef died yesterday, the man of the bike». I had already written a story about him: The man of the bike. The German sir told me: «you must know where he’s buried to bring him flowers». But Josef was in a burial chamber for months. The novel arises from the moment this sir visits me to let me know that someone has died. From then onwards I feel the need to find out about Josef, whom I got to know a little and who had died like an indigent in the public toilets of a shopping mall in Costa Calma. It took me five years to write Nieve y arena. What does a reader find in this book? First of all, they’ll find how the thread of the story is an excuse to tell a chronological story starting in January, when he met him, until he was buried, six months later. The thread is that spam of time. Also, the approach to Fuerteventura, and approach that already began in Fuerteventura, bajo la luz de las horas and, on the other hand, it shows the arid loneliness of Fuerteventura, the silence of the snowed landscape in Austria and the spirituality of the fields in both places in Winter. He carries everything he needs to live in two boxes. The novel deals with topics such as love, generosity… why do you turn to those subjects, so often represented in universal literature? Sympathy, love and generosity are very often disguised as many other things. Actually, you love yourself and are generous to others because you know they’ll be the same to you. To me, what really identifies human beings is not sentimentalism but deep sympathy. What pieces of work and writers have inspired you to write this novel? Russian writers like Mijaíl Shólojov, for his writing style. His book, El Don apacible, has simple descriptions of nature and daily life. Also, Classical Spanish writers: Miquel Delibes, Rulfo, García Márquez, and an unknown Argentinian poet named Roberto Juarroz. What makes this novel different from the rest of the books you’ve written previously? Audacity and work, its quality. How has it been your journey throughout the world of editorials? Patient. For two years I was sending the novel to different editorials. I also took part in a contest by Tandaja editorial, but I didn’t win anything. However, they told me they’d liked the novel so much and it was so well written that they could try to publish it. A crowdfunding was made and in three weeks I had the 1000 euros I needed. What surprises you of society during the six months from the moment the corpse appears until it’s buried? Actually, almost nothing, but it was an awakening to make us realise how far from reality all those who live blowing our own trumpet exclusively are.

Queridos lectores, ¿conocen la historia del hombre sabio? El hombre sabio era un señor que vivía en lo alto de una montaña. El sabio se percató que cada vez que recibía visita de las mismas personas, éstas le contaban el mismo problema. Ante esa situación y aprovechando un día en el que le visitaban varias personas decidió hacer algo distinto y ver si de alguna forma podía hacerles ver la situación en la que estaban. El sabio decidió contarles un chiste, ante el cual todos rieron a carcajadas. Cuando todos volvieron a la calma, el sabio volvió a contar el mismo chiste y tan solo unos pocos volvieron a reírse, así, el sabio, continuó hasta que por fin ya nadie rio. Las personas a su alrededor no sabían como reaccionar y fue entonces cuando el sabio les dijo: «No pueden reír una y otra vez ante el mismo chiste, entonces ¿por qué lloran una y otra vez ante el mismo problema?» Lo curioso de esta historia es que a todos nos pasa algo parecido. Cuando un problema se nos resiste, vuelve y nosotros volvemos a caer una y otra vez. ¿Estás de acuerdo conmigo? De hecho, una de las leyes universales es «lo que se resiste, persiste». Si tú, como yo, a veces te quedas estancado en una misma situación, te recomiendo el siguiente ejercicio: SITUACIONES NO DESEADAS

Ahora, en la columna de situaciones NO DESEADAS
describe con todo detalle aquellas situaciones en las que te encuentras que te gustaría cambiar y pregúntate lo siguiente: —¿ Me causa placer o dolor estar ahí? —¿ Cuáles son mis pensamientos habituales ante esa situación? —¿ Esos pensamientos están centrados en el problema o en la solución? —¿ Cómo me siento cuando estoy en esta situación? —¿ Qué resultado obtengo de esta situación? Luego vete a la columna de situaciones deseadas y pregúntate lo siguiente. —S i consiguiera ese resultado ¿me causaría placer o dolor? —¿ De qué forma tengo que pensar para conseguirlo? —A punta 3 o más posibles soluciones al problema. —S i comienzo a pensar de esa forma… ¿cómo me voy a sentir? —¿ Qué resultado voy a obtener? Como ven, esta técnica es muy poderosa y se puede usar de muchas formas. La clave está en que la usemos. O sea, en sentarnos a pensar en ese problema del que hablamos una y otra vez, siendo capaces de desnudarnos ante el papel con franqueza y sin miedos. Es la única forma que tenemos para luego volver a vestirnos; solo que esta vez, lo haremos con aquellas acciones y emociones que nos darán lo que buscamos, en vez de lo que no queremos. The wise man noticed that the people who visited him always talked about the same problem. To handle this situation, on a day when a lot of people went to visit him, he decided to do something different and see whether he could make them perceive their situation. The wise man decided to tell them a joke, making everybody laugh loudly. When they all went quiet again, the wise man told the same joke one more time and just a few of them laughed at it again. The wise man kept doing so until nobody laughed, at last. People around him did not know how to react, and that was when the wise man said: «You cannot laugh time and time again at the same joke; so why do you cry time and time again at the same problem?» The odd thing about this story is that something similar happens to all of us. When a problem persists, it comes up again and we are tangled up in it once more. Do you agree with me? Well, in fact one of the universal laws is «What you resist, will persist». If just like me, you get stuck in the same situation, I suggest you do the following exercise: SITUATIONS UNDESIRABLE
Then move to the column of the DESIRABLE situations and ask yourself what follows: • If I got that result, would it give me pleasure or pain? • How do I have to think to get that? • Write down 3 or more possible solutions to the problem. • If I start thinking this way… how will I feel? • What’s the result I am going to get? As you can see, this is a very powerful technique and it can be used in many ways. The key is that we have to use it. I mean, we have to sit and reflect on the problem we talk about time and time again, we have to be able to analyse it honestly and fearlessly. It is the only way we can face it and solve it, through those actions and emotions that will give us what we look for, instead of what we don’t want.
