10 YEARS OF YOGA WITH AZUL FIT Texto_Text: Bili Puig de la Bellacasa Azulfit fue el primer retiro de Yoga creado en Fuerteventura y uno de los primeros retiros de Yoga y Pilates del mundo. Cada año visita Fuerteventura gente de todo el mundo, para asistir a alguno de sus retiros, debido también a la alta experiencia de su equipo local y la calidad de los instructores internacionales invitados. Ahora Azulfilt celebra su 10º Aniversario con un Open Day con la intención de unir la escena del yoga local con la comunidad global de yoga. Acudirán profesores internacionales para celebrarlo con los talentos de Fuerteventura y compartir los beneficios del yoga en comunidad. ¿Qué diferencias aprecias en la escena del yoga en Fuerteventura desde que empezasteis hace 10 años? Al principio éramos el único centro que celebraba retiros de Yoga y Pilates en la isla y de los pocos de Europa. Hoy, en Fuerteventura abundan los estudios de yoga, retiros e increíbles expertos de bienestar. Desde siempre nos ha gustado dar la bienvenida a todo el que venía de fuera y recomendar el estilo de vida de la isla. Tuve la inmensa suerte de enseñar en un precioso muelle de madera en la playa, donde antes solía estar La Sirena, y nuestros visitantes venían a mis sesiones de Pilates y al mismo tiempo a participar de las demás clases que sucedían en la isla con profesoras como Ilona en Villaverde o Rahika en Lajares. Hoy la isla vive años de plenitud en cuanto a la escena del yoga y el bienestar en Fuerteventura y estoy seguro de que muchos de sus visitantes vienen atraídos por ella. ¿Cómo ha impactado sobre Azulfit este crecimiento? Con tal oferta de yoga, sería normal sentirse competitivo, pero creo que cuanto más nos apoyemos unos a otros, más exitoso será para todos. Cada profesor tiene su propio estilo, lo que permite a cada uno encontrar su nicho y transmitir su propia pasión y personalidad en la práctica del yoga. Ahora hay muchos estilos de yoga y movimiento y Fuerteventura,

de verdad tiene para todos. Empezamos como un pequeño grupo de yogis y ahora tenemos la inmensa suerte de ser parte de la increíble comunidad de yoga de la isla y es una comunidad maravillosa. ¿Por qué Fuerteventura? ¡Es uno de los lugares más bellos del planeta! Cuando combinas su belleza natural y la energía tan increíble que desprende con el poder y la práctica positiva del movimiento consciente, el sentimiento es extraordinario. Para muchos el simple gesto de meter los pies en el agua y sentir el poder del océano les ayuda a deshacerse de la ansiedad y el estrés casi inmediatamente. Su paisaje volcánico es perfecto para poner los pies en la tierra y reflexionar, su quietud te permite pasar tiempo contigo mismo, fuera de distracciones y es el lugar perfecto para crecer, curarse y amar. ¿Qué tipo de gente visita Azulfit? Nuestros visitantes y profesores vienen de todo el mundo cada uno con circunstancias diferentes. Es maravilloso introducirles en esta maravillosa isla. Algo que tienen en común es la sed de experiencias reales con la que llegan a Fuerteventura: de apreciar el océano, los pueblos, los paisajes, y la gente y la energía de este lugar se lo proporcionan. Volverán de cuando en cuando y se convertirán en una parte sostenible y positiva del turismo de la isla. ¿A quién recomendarías dar clases de yoga? Hay un tipo de yoga que es adecuado para todos y para cada cuerpo. Hay algunas personas que buscan yoga activo, algunas buscan prácticas más meditativas o espirituales y otras necesitan clases más fundamentales para nutrir y sanar. Hay tantos talentos increíbles de yoga, terapeutas y profesionales del bienestar y tantos lugares para practicarlo en la isla que estamos deseando celebrar nuestro día de Puertas Abiertas para compartirlo con ellos.

¿Qué se vivirá este día? Espero que sea la oportunidad para que cualquier persona interesada en el yoga y en un estilo de vida más saludable, pueda experimentar todo tipo de yoga, meditaciones, talleres de bienestar y conocer a otros miembros de la comunidad con ideas afines. Los visitantes encontrarán un espacio para relajarse, darse un masaje o probar las clases, talleres y meditaciones que tendrán lugar impartidos por increíbles maestros. El evento será encabezado por el Yoga Rockstar David Sye, quien ofrecerá su emocionante estilo YogaBeats, que es un tipo de rock and roll de flujo libre con un ambiente festivo y para todos los niveles. Lo mejor de todo es que todos pueden encontrarse, compartir sonrisas y celebrar la increíble comunidad de yoga que Fuerteventura ha reunido. ¿Quién puede unirse a este Día? Absolutamente cualquiera con una mente abierta, corazón abierto y un deseo de conocer y celebrar con otros yoguis. No se requiere experiencia de yoga. Azulfit was the first Yoga retreat created in Fuerteventura and one of the first Yoga & Pilates retreats in the world. Every year many people come to the island to participate in their retreats. They have a highly experienced local team as well as internationally respected guest instructors who contribute their knowledge about yoga and Pilates from across the world. Azulfit now celebrates its 10th Anniversary with a community Open Day excited to bring the island’s thriving yoga scene together with the global yoga community. International teachers will come to celebrate with Fuerteventura’s local yoga talents who also share the positive message of yoga and bring communities together. What differences do you appreciate in Fuerteventura’s yoga scene since you opened 10 years ago? In the beginning we were the only Yoga and Pilates retreat experience on the island and one of only a few in the world. Today, Fuerteventura is abundant with yoga studios, retreats, and amazing wellbeing practitioners. We started by welcoming people to the island to share the amazing Fuerteventura lifestyle. I was blessed to teach on a beautiful wooden deck on the beach at what used to be La Sirena, and our guests joined Pilates sessions with me or joined us at the inspiring classes happening on the island at the time, with teachers such as Ilona in Villaverde and Radhika in Lajares. Today, the island has a thriving yoga and wellbeing scene and I believe that now many visit Fuerteventura because of it. And, how has this growth impacted Azulfit? We started as a small group of yogis and now we’re blessed to be part of an amazing island yoga community. It’s a wonderful community to be part of. With so much yoga available on the island, it would be easy

to feel competitive and closed off, but, in truth we are more successful when we support one another and work together. Each teacher has their own unique style and character, which allows them to find their niche and share what is their own passion, their own personality and love for the practice of yoga or movement. There are so many wonderful styles of yoga and movement now - Fuerteventura truly has something for everyone. Why Fuerteventura? Fuerteventura is one of the most beautiful places on the planet! When you combine the natural beauty and incredible energy of this paradise island with the powerful and positive practice of mindful movement, the feeling is amazing. For many people, the feeling of putting their feet in the sand and feeling the power of the ocean here melts away anxiety and stress almost instantly. The open volcanic landscape is perfect for grounding and reflecting –this stillness gives you the opportunity to spend time with yourself away from distractions and that is the perfect place to start– to grow, to heal, to love. What kind of visitors come to Azulfit? Our guests and teachers come from all over the world and from a variety of backgrounds. It’s wonderful to introduce them to this wonderful island. They are also the type of people who are thirsty to experience the real Fuerteventura and appreciate the oceans, the rural villages, incredible volcanic landscapes and the people and the energy that are unique to our island. They will return time and time again and become a sustainable and positive contribution to the island’s tourism. Who may you recommend take yoga classes? There is a type of yoga that is suitable for every person and every body. Some are searching for active yoga, some for more meditative/spiritual practices and some others are in need of fundamental classes, to nourish and heal. There are so many

amazing yogis and therapists and places to practise on the island, we are excited to showcase some of these incredible local teachers and experts at our Community Open Day. What would we experience during the Open Day? We have inspiring teachers managing amazing yoga classes, meditations, healthy living and essential oils workshops all day, as well as delicious food, music and laughter. Visitors of all yoga experiences can join us to do as much or as little as they wish. Find some space to relax, indulge in a massage, or try the amazing classes and meditations. The event will be headlined by Yoga Rockstar, David Sye, who will be sharing his exciting YogaBeats style, a free flowing, rock n roll class with a festival atmosphere, for all levels. Best of all, it’s a chance for everyone to meet one another, share smiles and celebrate the incredible yoga community that Fuerteventura has brought together. Who can join you in this Open Day? Fuerteventura es el destino perfecto para surfear o navegar sus olas, nuestra isla se ha convertido en un destino prioritario para aquellos que aman el viento y el mar. El kite surfing es, probablemente, el deporte acuático que cuenta con más días de práctica durante todo el año en nuestra paradisiaca isla. Hablamos con Petra, fundadora de la escuela de kitsurfing REDSHARK (2006), todo un referente en el mundo del viento en la isla, que nos cuenta la gran evolución de este deporte y su diversificación en los últimos años: En los inicios el deporte del kite se encontró con numerosos problemas dentro y fuera del agua, entre ellos, la falta de regulación, materiales que tenían que evolucionar y mejorar, y mentalidades cerradas ante la práctica .6

de este nuevo deporte. Eran tiempos donde la inexperiencia de quienes comenzaban a practicarlo y el desconocimiento, por tratarse de un deporte tan novedoso, podían generar situaciones de tensión en las playas donde se comenzaba a practicar. Pero los tiempos han cambiado, y la evolución tecnológica de los materiales sumada a la profesionalidad de quienes se dedican a ello, han convertido esta actividad en un deporte cercano y accesible para cualquier persona que tenga el deseo de saltar, cruzar o surfear el mar. Hoy se puede hablar de una segunda generación que ha nacido conociendo la existencia de un deporte que se ha dividido en varias categorías y que ofrece una salida profesional Olímpica en la categoría Slalom, bajo la etiqueta «Racing». Tenemos también la modalidad freestyle para aquellos que disfrutan saltando y realizando trucos en el aire (graps, handlepasses) y las tablas usadas, hoy en día, son similares a las del wakeboard. Lo último en llegar ha sido la modalidad kitewave/strapless, una disciplina del kite que engancha solo con ver a quienes la practican y, seguramente, la más llamativa para los sur-

feros, ya que consiste en navegar con una tabla de surf sin footstraps, es decir, sin nada que te sujete a la tabla. Así es que el kitesurfing es ya un deporte consolidado que cuenta con un tour mundial organizado por GKA (Global Kiteboarding Associations) que elige los mejores spots del mundo para sus eventos, lugares clave que ofrecen la mejor calidad de olas y vientos: Marruecos, Portugal, Mauritius, Brasil, Tarifa, Cabo Verde y, por supuesto, Fuerteventura. Año tras año pasan por nuestras playas figuras clave del panorama del kite internacional, como es el caso del campeón de mundo Matchu Lopes, originario de Cabo Verde, de nacionalidad Española, que ha elegido Fuerteventura como su segunda casa motivado por los 150 km de costas y las infinitas posibilidades para entrenar y mejorar en su disciplina que nuestra isla le ofrece. Matchu, antes de convertirse en rider internacional sponsorizado por las mejores marcas del sector, trabajó como profesor de kitesurf. Hoy, siendo ya campeón del mundo y uno de los atletas más nombrados del circuito

mundial, sigue con el deseo de trasmitir su conocimiento a los demás, especializándose en la enseñanza de su disciplina, el kitewave / strapless. Así es que Matchu, apoyado por el equipo de REDSHARK, organiza unas semanas de «strapless coaching». Varios seminarios de 5 días donde se darán las claves para mejorar en el dominio del viento y las olas. Bajo la dirección de este campeón del mundo, los participantes podrán practicar y aprender los últimos trucos en saltos y las nuevas tendencias en giros y maniobras, entre otros conocimientos. El primer bloque de este seminario tendrá lugar durante las primeras semanas de agosto, entre las competiciones de Fuerteventura y de Alemania. Contará para su desarrollo con la asistencia de una barca de apoyo que garantice la seguridad y la logística, un equipo de

filmación para el posterior análisis y corrección e intercomunicadores donde los asistentes tendrán conexión directa con Matchu para ir ejecutando los movimientos necesarios para lograr los objetivos lo más rápido posible, estando asistidos continuamente. El objetivo es corregir y mejorar dentro y fuera del agua, por ello Matchu contará también con la ayuda de Luis de Dios, entrenador físico profesional de alto rendimiento (cuatro años preparador a la Selección Española de Snowboard, Juez internacional del Campeonato del mundo de kite-surf strapless). Fuerteventura is the perfect destination to surf or ride its waves; our island has become a crucial destination for wind and sea lovers. Kitesurfing is, probably, the most practised water sport all through the year on our paradise island.

We have talked to Petra, founder of the kitesurfing school REDSHARK (2006), a true model in the world of wind in the island who tells us about the evolution of this sport and its diversification in the last years: At its early stages, kite met several difficulties in and out of the water, among them the lack of regulations, equipment which had to evolve and improve, and narrow minds in the practice of this new sport. They were times when the lack of experience and knowledge of those who were beginning to practise it, as it was

such a new sport, could bring about stressful situations on the beach where it was starting to be practised. But times have indeed changed and the technological development of equipment added to the professionalism of those who are dedicated to it have made this activity become a close and accessible sport for any person willing to jump, cross or surf the sea. Nowadays we can speak about a second generation that has been born knowing about the existence of a sport that has divided into several categories, offering an Olympic

We also have the freestyle modality for those who enjoy jumping and playing tricks in the air (grasps, handlepasses) and the boards used nowadays are similar to those of wakeboarding. The last modality has been kitewave/strapless, a kite discipline that captivates you just by watching those practising it, and no doubt the most attractive to surfers, as it consists of riding on a strapless surfboard, so nothing tightens you to the board. Kitesurfing is, then, a consolidated sport that already has a world tour organized by GKA (Global Kiteboarding Association), which chooses the best spots in the world for their events, key sites offering the best quality waves and wind: Morocco, Portugal, Mauritius, Brazil, Tarifa, Cape Verde and, of course, Fuerteventura. Year after year, international kite figures visit our beaches, like Matchu Lopes, the world champion, coming from Cape Verde, with Spanish nationality, who has chosen Fuerteventura as his second home because of its 150 kmlong coastline and the endless possibilities offered by our island to train and improve his discipline. Matchu, before becoming an international rider, sponsored by the best brands in the sector, worked as a kite-surf instructor. At present, already a world champion and one of the most recognised athletes in the world circuit, He’s still willing to pass down his knowledge to others, specialising in the teaching of his discipline, kite-wave/strapless. So, Matchu, supported by the REDSHARK team, is organising some weeks of «strapless coaching». They consist of several 5-day seminaries where they will be teaching some keys to master the wind and the waves. Under the direction of this world champion, the participants will take part and learn the last tricks to jump and new tendencies in turns and moves, among other knowledge. The first stage of this seminary will take place during the first weeks in August, between Fuerteventura and Germany competitions. It will have the assistance of a back-up ship guaranteeing the safety and logistics, a filming team for the subsequent analysis and correction, and intercoms where the attendants will have a direct connection to Matchu to perform the necessary moves to achieve their goals as soon as possible being continually assisted. The aim is to correct and improve in and out of the water; this is why Matchu will also have the help by Luis de Dios, peak performance professional physical trainer (Snowboard Spanish Selection trainer for four years and international judge in the strapless kite-surf world championship). A good chance to keep evolving in the practice of a sport that is able to join the wind and the waves under the look and voice of a great world champion, what else can we ask for? A music festival that will take place in the football pitch in El Cotillo on august 17th, coinciding with the beginning of the patron saint festivities in this village.

Un festival musical que se celebrará en el Campo del Fútbol de El Cotillo el 17 de agosto, coincidiendo con el inicio de las fiestas patronales de la localidad. Entre los artistas que participarán en este festival destaca la presencia de Juan Magán, que llegará a El Cotillo con una colección de hits y colaboraciones con artistas como Enrique Iglesias, Paulina Rubio, Belinda o Gente de Zona, entre otros muchos. Con más de un millón y medio de sencillos vendidos, cuenta con cuatro nominaciones a los Premios Grammy y es un referente del electro-latino a nivel mundial. Además, disfrutaremos en directo de la música del artista venezolano Carlos Baute, que acumula una trayectoria de más de tres décadas desde que se inició en el mundo del espectáculo cuando era solo un adolescente. Como cantante y compositor en solitario ha recibido dos Premios Ondas, a la mejor canción y como mejor artista latino, y ha vendido cerca de dos millones de discos en todo el mundo. También actuará el dúo K-Narias, formado por Gara y Loida, dos hermanas gemelas con cinco producciones en el mercado y que y que consiguió ser Disco de Oro en España .10

LAS AVES EN CANARIAS FORMAN UN CAPÍTULO TAN EXTENSO Y APASIONANTE QUE NO SERÍAN SUFICIENTES TODAS LAS PÁGINAS DEL AÑO PARA HABLAR DE ELLAS. EN ESTA OCASIÓN NOS CENTRAREMOS EN LOS HUMEDALES DE CANARIAS Y LAS AVES QUE LOS HABITAN.

Una de las características más impresionantes de este grupo de aves es, sin duda, su capacidad de migración. Son muchas las especies que, tras pasar los meses de verano en zonas del norte de Europa, viajan hacia el hemisferio sur buscando alimento y calor cuando estos factores son limitantes en el norte. Algunas viajan miles de kilómetros hasta llegar a zonas con condiciones idóneas en las que reproducirse y cuidar sus polluelos. Las islas Canarias, por su latitud y proximidad al continente africano, juegan un papel clave en las rutas migratorias. Fuerteventura en particular, cuenta con algunas zonas de humedales que presentan agua durante todo el año. Éstos pequeños oasis juegan un importante papel como zona de descanso: ¡Imagina el gasto de energía durante sus viajes! Necesitan de lugares tranquilos, con agua y alimento, en los que reponer fuerzas antes de seguir su gran viaje. Uno de los humedales más conocidos es la presa de Las Parcelas, en las inmediaciones del macizo de Betancuria, en el que algunas especies de aves han establecido colonias reproductoras. La colonia más llamativa es la compuesta por el Tarro Ccanelo (Tadorna ferruginea) una especie de ganso cuyas poblaciones están en peligro crítico de extinción, .12

y que han formado en Fuerteventura una colonia reproductora estable. Entre otras especies que han formado colonias nidificantes se encuentran la Gallineta Común (Gallinula chloropus), la Focha Común (Fulica atra), el Cchorlitejo Chico (Charadrius dubius) y la Cigüeñuela Común (Himantopus himantopus). Entre otras aves que es posible observar con frecuencia en nuestra isla se encuentras la Garceta Común (Egretta garzetta), la Garza Rreal (Ardea cinerea) y el Cuervo Canario (Curvus corax canariensis). En zonas de laderas pedregosas destacan el Camachuelo Trompetero (Bucanetes githagineus), un ave amenazada que cuenta con una subespecie endémica de Canarias, la Tarabilla Canaria (Saxicola dacotiae), endemismo majorero, o el Alcaudón Real (Lanius meridionalis). Algunas de estas especies se encuentran muy amenazadas y están expuestas a diversos impactos como la degradación del hábitat (extracción de agua, pisoteo y sobrepastoreo), el ruido y las molestias. ¡Recuerda! Las zonas de humedales son de vital importancia en una isla como la nuestra, donde el agua es un bien escaso. Cuando visites alguno de estos lugares, modera tus actividades, pues las aves, especialmente las migrantes, pueden estar agotadas de sus viajes. Pero sobre todo: ¡disfruta del silencio, de su canto y de sus diferencias!

THE BIRDS IN THE CANARY ISLANDS MAKE UP SUCH AN EXTENSIVE AND EXCITING CHAPTER THAT ALL THE PAGES IN A YEAR WOULDN’T BE ENOUGH TO SPEAK ABOUT ALL OF THEM. ON THIS OCCASION WE’LL FOCUS ON THE WETLANDS IN THE CANARY ISLANDS AND THE BIRDS INHABITING THEM. One of the most impressive characteristics of this group of birds is, no doubt, their migratory capacity. A wide variety of species, after spending the summer months in the north of Europe, travel to the southern hemisphere looking for food and heat when these factors are scarce in the north. Some of them travel for thousands of kilometres until they get to areas where the mating and breeding conditions are idyllic. The Canary Islands, due to their latitude and proximity to the African continent, play a key role in the migratory routes. Especially Fuerteventura has some wetlands that have water all through the year. These little oasis play an important role as a rest area: Imagine their energy output during their travels! They need quiet places with water and food where they can restore their strength before going on with their travel. One of the best known wetlands is the dam of «Las Parcelas», near the massif of Betancuria, where some bird species have established their breeding settlements. The most outstanding settlement is that made up by the Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), a kind of endangered goose that has made up a stable breeding settlement in Fuerteventura. Among other species that have settled nesting colonies we find the Common Moorhen ( Gallinula chloropus), The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra), The little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) and The Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus). We can also watch other species in our island, like The Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and The Canary Island Crow (Curvus corax canariensis). On rocky hillside areas we must highlight the Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus), an endangered species that has an endemic subspecies in The Canary Islands, The Canary Islands Stonechat (Saxicola dacotiae), or The Southern Grey Shike (Lanius meridionalis). Some of these species are really endangered and are exposed to several impacts like habitat degradation (water extraction, trampling and overgrazing), noise and disturbance! Remember, when you visit some of these places, the wetlands are of vital importance in an island like ours, where water is a scarce resource: moderate your activities, since birds, especially migratory ones, may be exhausted after their travels. But most of all, enjoy silence, the birds singing and their differences! .14

Ensalada de Atún Escabechado de Naranja y Tomate Raf RECETA DE ISRAEL FRANCO ZUBIAGA, Chef de La Bodeguita de Corralejo

Pickled Tuna Salad with orange and Raff Tomato RECIPE BY ISRAEL FRANCO ZUBIAGA, Chef in La Bodeguita de Corralejo

INGREDIENTES (para 4 pesonas) • Atún fresco 500 g.* • Tomate Raf, 3 unidades • 100 g de rúcula. PARA EL ESCABECHE: • 200 ml de aceite de girasol • 200 ml de aceite de oliva suave • 2 unidades chalotas (juliana) • 3 ajos pelados y cortados en láminas finas • 1 hoja de laurel • 5 unidades de pimienta en grano • 20 g de pimentón de la Vera • 40 ml de vinagre de Módena • 40 ml de vinagre de Jerez • Corteza de una naranja (sin la parte blanca).

*ELABORACIÓN DEL ATÚN ESCABECHADO Cortamos el atún fresco en trozos regulares, salpimentamos y lo marcamos en la satén a fuego fuerte por las cuatro caras, que el interior quede crudo; y reservamos Rehogamos en el aceite la chalota y el ajo junto a la pimienta en grano y laurel, después añadimos el pimentón de la Vera y rápidamente añadimos los vinagres para que no se queme el pimentón. Por último introducimos la corteza de naranja y añadimos al fuego los lomos de atún, hasta la correcta cocción del mismo; unos cinco minutos aproximadamente según el grosor de los lomos y pasado el tiempo retiramos del fuego, dejándolo fuera a temperatura ambiente. Reservamos en frigorífico. PREPARACIÓN DEL TOMATE RAF: Ponemos agua a hervir, hacemos una cruz en la parte inferior del tomate y los introducimos en el agua una vez haya hervido. Los dejaremos 2 minutos hirviendo, una vez pasado el tiempo los retiramos y refrescamos con agua fría para pelarlos y cortarlos en gajos; reservamos. EMPLATADO: Colocamos el tomate en la base del plato, le sacamos las lascas al atún y los colocamos encima del tomate. Para el aliño usamos el mismo escabeche y acabamos poniendo rúcula al gusto. Notas: • Si no encuentras tomates raf puedes usar cualquier variedad. • También puedes sustituir la chalota por cebolleta.

INGREDIENTS (4 people): • Fresh Tuna, 500 g.* • Raff Tomato, 3 pieces • Rocket, 100 g. PICKLE SAUCE: • 200 ml sunflower oil • 200 ml olive oil • 2 pieces of shallots (shredded) • 3 peeled and sliced garlics • 1 bay leaf • 5 grains of pepper • 20 g paprika from la Vera • 40 ml balsamic vinegar • 40 ml sherry vinegar • An orange peel (without the white peel). *PICKLED TUNA ELABORATION Chop the fresh tuna into regular pieces, marinate with salt and pepper and brown it over a strong heat on the four sides, so that it remains raw inside; set it aside. Sauté the shallot and the garlic in oil, together with the grain pepper and the bay leaf; then, add the paprika and then the vinegars quickly so the paprika doesn’t get burnt. Finally we add the orange peel and the tuna loins we had set aside until properly cooked, 5 minutes approximately, depending on how thick they are. After that time, remove from heat and let it cool down to keep it in the fridge. RAFF TOMATO PREPARATION: Boil the water. Make a cross on the base of the tomato and put it into the water once the water has boiled. Let it boil for a couple of minutes and then remove from heat and cool it down with cold water to peel and then cut it into wedges. Set it aside. PLATING UP: Lay the tomato wedges on the base of a plate. Top them with the tuna cubes. To marinate them, use the same pickle sauce and then add rocket to taste. Notes: • If you can’t find raff tomatoes you can use any variety. • You can substitute spring onions for the shallots.

UN PASEO POR LA HISTORIA DE FUERTEVENTURA 3 museos clave que transmiten la esencia majorera Muchos llegan a Fuerteventura atraídos por las playas de arena dorada y el agua turquesa, pero la mayoría vuelve, o incluso nunca se van, enganchados por la cultura y esencia majoreras. Para vivir la isla debemos recorrerla por completo, saborearla, sentirla y mimarla, porque Fuerteventura está llena de tesoros que esperan ser descubiertos y que debemos cuidar, para así poder seguir ocupando un lugar muy importante dentro de la cultura de la isla majorera. Esta es la principal misión de 3 de sus principales museos: acercar a visitantes y residentes esa esencia majorera tan especial y que tanto atrapa. El Museo de las Salinas del Carmen, antes llamado Museo de la Sal, abrió sus puertas de nuevo a los visitantes el pasado mes de mayo, con una imagen completamente renovada y una nueva gestión. Ahora cuenta con una exposición que nos traslada a principios del siglo pasado, a la casa de don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera, el último gran propietario de estas salinas. En este museo conoceremos todo sobre la explotación de la sal y la historia de estas salinas, que cuentan con unas características muy especiales. El visitante podrá disfrutar de un recorrido museográfico totalmente nuevo a través del despacho de don Manuel, pasando por su estudio o su dormitorio, para terminar con un vídeo-mapping espectacular. Tras este viaje, el visitante puede recorrer libremente las instalaciones en el exterior, conociendo el saltadero en el que empieza todo el proceso de obtención de una sal de espuma de gran calidad. Como las salinas han vuelto a ser explotadas actualmente, el visitante tendrá la oportunidad de conocer de primera mano el trabajo de los salineros, poniéndose incluso en su piel con la actividad «Salinero por un día».

En fechas señaladas, el Centro ofrece una demostración del funcionamiento del molino con un auténtico molinero, además de mostrar el amasado tradicional del gofio en zurrón y poder degustar un producto genuino de esta tierra. Estos tres centros ponen de relieve la importancia y el valor de la tradición de una isla que tiene mucho que ofrecer. This is the main purpose of its three main museums: to approach the visitors and residents to such a special and captivating essence.

Museo de las Salinas del Carmen we must know how the characteristics of the island have afected its fauna and flora as well as its first inhabitants. The itinerary through this museum teaches us all the secrets about cheese production, the special characteristics of the goats and kids in the island and it even allows us to try our skills milking a goat. Moreover, in its enclosure we find an outstanding cacti garden, with endemic species coming from all over the world, like «the golden barrel cactus», together with unique species in the island like «El Cardón de Jandia» (Euphorbia handiensis), natural symbol of the island of Fuerteventura. If you want to learn more about the mills of Fuerteventura, the ideal place is El Centro de Interpretación del os Molinos, in Tiscamanita. Located in a human heritage site, it allows the visitors to wander through the different rooms in this majorera house, like the kitchen, the beautiful outdoor yard or even climbing up to

the inside of the Euphorbia handiensis mill, to learn about how these giants worked, which at the beginning were very similar to those that Don Quixote met, but which adapted, little by little, to the characteristics of Fuerteventura. The total amount almost reached one thousand. Its importance is key when we realise that it’s essential to produce «gofio», a typical Canary Island Food that we can taste in this building. On special dates, The centre offers a demostration of how the mill works, a task carried out by a real miller, apart from showcasing the kneading of the traditional «gofio» in a pouch and offering visitors to taste a genuine product of this land. These three centres highlight the importance and value of the tradition of an island that has very much to offer. They are open every day all through the year (10 to 18h) and visiting them is a must for he who wants to find out a little more about Fuerteventura.

Dulce Pomelo es un estudio de interiorismo y construcción dirigido por dos mujeres, Elisa, interiorista de 44 años, y María, aparejadora de 37 años. Dos hermanas emprendedoras con raíces majoreras que en agosto de 2017 crearon Dulce Pomelo para dar salida a la necesidad de particulares y empresarios a ambientar sus espacios de vida y trabajo, mediante soluciones de diseño de interior para todas las necesidades. Con 20 y 15 años de experiencia a sus espaldas en el sector de la decoración y la construcción, decidieron empezar este proyecto conjunto, a caballo entre Fuerteventura y Gran Canaria. Su filosofía se caracteriza por la creación de espacios para cada cliente según su personalidad y circunstancias. Se trata de realizar un viaje conjunto donde sus inquietudes se convierten en el punto de partida desde el que crear soluciones únicas hechas por y para cada proyecto. De esta manera hacen que cada trabajo empiece de cero sin ataduras ni limitaciones, simplemente escuchando a sus clientes y aportando soluciones de valor para espacios que funcionan y emocionan, espacios que dejan huella en las personas que lo habitan.

¿Cómo os decidisteis a montar algo por vuestra cuenta? Dulce Pomelo: Sin pensarlo mucho… Una comida familiar, proyectos de ambas en el aire, mucha ilusión, y así fue como empezamos haciendo proyectos juntas que, sin darnos cuenta hemos ido enganchando y creciendo con cada uno. ¿Es fácil emprender en España? DP: No, nada. Dos manitas, un portátil y muchas ganas. Si esperas algo, no das un paso adelante. Como mujeres ¿os habéis encontrado el camino laboral fácil? DP: La verdad es que al comenzar había miedo. La construcción es un oficio a priori de hombres, pero siempre nos hemos sentido arropadas. Entendemos que es cuestión de respeto. ¿Por qué Fuerteventura? DP: La sangre majorera recorre nuestras venas, nuestro padre fue el primer arquitecto colegiado de Fuerteventura, por lo que guardamos un vínculo especial con la profesión y con esta tierra. ¿Con qué tipo de clientes os encontráis? DP: Pequeña y mediana empresa, mucho particular y turismo vacacional. Tenemos la suerte de tener una cartera

de clientes muy fieles con los que trabajamos desde hace tiempo y que han confiado en nosotras para todos sus proyectos. ¿Cuáles son las necesidades principales con las que os encontráis en la isla? DP: Son variadas, pero prácticamente todas orientadas al turismo: desde mejorar una planta hotelera obsoleta hasta reinventar comercios para consumidores y turistas con alto grado de exigencia. ¿Cambia mucho el criterio a aplicar si se trata de proyectos particulares o proyectos de empresa? DP: Sí, mucho. Cuando se trata de un particular hay un nivel de escucha muy importante. Al tratarse de empresas, por supuesto también, pero en estos casos tenemos más libertad para desarrollar ideas más innovadoras. Su último proyecto ha sido la Asesoría de Claudia Vera, en Corralejo. Claudia, (32 años) natural de Fuerteventura, también estrena su andadura por cuenta propia. Graduada Social de profesión es otra valiente que se lanza al mundo del emprendimiento y que se puso en manos de Elisa y María para convertir su sueño en realidad. Claudia tuvo claro que quería introducir un toque diferenciador en su local, por eso se puso en contacto con Elisa y María, para escapar de los convencionalismos y darle la calidez y el buen gusto que quería para su negocio. Llevaba 7 años ejerciendo su carrera profesional y, en ese tiempo, su constancia y su profesionalidad llevaron a los antiguos dueños de la Asesoría a proponerle quedarse con su oficina en Corralejo. Así, Claudia toma las riendas de este negocio, que si bien lleva años en la misma ubicación, respira nuevos aires, nuevo diseño y nueva directiva.

08 Dulce Pomelo is an interior design and construction studio managed by two women, Elisa, a 44-year-old interior designer, and María, a 37-year-old quantity surveyor. Two enterprising sisters that created Dulce Pomelo in August 2017 to meet the needs of individuals and businessmen to decorate their homes and workplaces through interior design solutions suitable to meet all the needs. Backed-up by 20 and 15 years of experience in interior design and construction, they decided to make their professional path with this joint project, straddling between Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. Their work philosophy is closely linked to the needs of each client. It’s all about making a joint trip where their interests meet to create unique solutions made specially for every single project. That way they start every piece of work without bounds or limitations, just by listening to their clients and offering valuable solutions for spaces to live or work in, rooms that leave an indelible mark on the people inhabiting them.

¿Cómo te decidiste a dar el paso de emprender y quedarte con la Asesoría? Claudia Vera: Tenía 25 años cuando trabajaba por cuenta ajena como auxiliar administrativa, me llamaron para ofrecerme quedarme con la asesoría. Me costó decidirme por la responsabilidad que eso conllevaba, pero en mi trabajo no iba a poder avanzar mucho profesionalmente y el tren sólo pasa una vez. ¿En qué punto decides acudir a Dulce Pomelo para llevar a cabo el proyecto de interior de la Asesoría? CV: Ya conocía trabajos realizados por Elisa que se asemejaban a lo que yo estaba buscando en cuanto al toque moderno y a la vez sencillo y cómodo para trabajar. Me puse en contacto con ella y fue cuando descubrí Dulce Pomelo. Me quedé encantada con la propuesta del proyecto que me realizaron. Como mujer ¿te has encontrado el camino laboral fácil? CV: Ya no tanto como mujer, tal vez para mí lo más difícil ha sido la edad y encima mujer. A mis clientes les resultaba raro que una chica de 25 años les fuera asesorar laboralmente. ¿Crees que el crecimiento en la isla provoca un aperturismo a la hora de crear proyectos nuevos y en su acogida por la población? CV: No, el crecimiento de la isla parece algo transitorio, si los proyectos no son para largo plazo la población no los acoge. Hay muchos negocios cuya duración desde su apertura no llega a un año. No hay estabilidad. ¿Qué tipo de clientes acuden a tu Asesoría? CV: Tenemos de todo, pero tal vez por la situación, la mayoría de los clientes son relacionados con la restauración, comercio, construcción, siderometalurgia, etc. ¿Cómo visualizas la isla dentro de 10 años? CV: Con un turismo de calidad, en el que hagan partícipes a los negocios de la calle. Para mí lo más importante es darle un vuelco a la calidad del turismo.

How did you decide to set up a business on your own? Dulce Pomelo: Not thinking much about it. A family dinner, some pies in the sky… we started to make projects together and, later on and almost without realising, we started linking projects until nowadays. Is it easy to be an entrepreneur in Spain? DP: No, not at all. You get no financial aids. Your two hands, a laptop, and lots of excitement. If you are waiting for something you never move forwards. As women, have you found your career path easy? DP: to tell the truth, we were afraid in the beginning. Construction is, a priori, a «men’s job», but we’ve always been supported. We understand that it’s a question of respect. Why Fuerteventura? DP: «Majorera» blood flows in our veins. Our father was the first registered architect in Fuerteventura so we’ve always had a special connection to the profession and to this land. Which kind of clients do you have? DP: They are small and medium enterprises, lots of individuals and holiday tourism. We are fortunate to have a portfolio of very loyal customers with whom we have worked for a long time and who have trusted us for all their projects. Which are the main needs to meet in the island? DP: They’re varied, but almost all of them are tourism oriented: from refurbishing an obsolete hotel to reinvent shops for really finicky tourists and consumers. Does the criterion to apply change if the project is for an individual person or for a company? DP: Yes, a lot. If it’s for an individual person the listening stage is very important. You also need to listen to enterprises, of course, but in these cases we have more freedom to develop innovative ideas. Their last project has been Claudia Vera’s consultancy. Claudia, (32 years old), born in Fuerteventura, is also starting out as a freelance. A Social Graduate, she is another brave woman who launched herself to the entrepreneurial world and she relied on Elisa and María to make her dream come true. Claudia was sure that she wanted to introduce a distinguishing element in her premises; this is why she contacted Elisa and María, to escape conventionalism and provide the cosiness and good taste she wanted to her business. She had been carrying out this professional career for seven years, and her constancy and professionalism led the old owners of the consultancy to propose her to keep their office in Corralejo. So, Claudia took the reins of this business that, although still in the same location, is getting a new lease of life with a new design and management.

How did you decide to become an entrepreneur and keep the consultancy? CV: I was 25 when I was employed as an administrative assistant. They called to offer me to keep the consultancy. It was hard to decide because of the great deal of responsibility that this would entail, but I knew I wouldn’t have much chance to succeed in my professional career and time and tide wait for no man. When did you decide to rely on Dulce Pomelo to carry out the interior design project of your consultancy? CV: I already knew some works by Elisa that looked very much like what I was looking for regarding the modern features, as well as being easy and comfortable for a workplace. I contacted her and then I found out Dulce Pomelo. I was charmed by the project proposal they made for me. As a woman, have you found it easy to carry out this professional path? CV: I think the most difficult issue to overcome has been my age, on top of being a woman. Being a 25-year-old woman made my clients wonder whether my professional counselling would be experienced enough. Do you believe the growing population raises openness when it comes to creating new projects and in the way they are accepted by the population? CV: I don’t. The growing population seems to be somehow transitional; if the projects aren’t long-term ones the populations doesn’t accept them. There are many businesses which don’t remain open even for one year. There isn’t any stability. What kind of clients do you have? CV: We have a variety of clients but maybe due to our location most of our clients come from the catering, trading, construction and even the iron and steel industries etc. How do you visualize the island in ten years? CV: With quality tourism that will promote the little businesses in the street. I think the most important point is to tip the scales at quality tourism.
