La Vaca Azul, en el pueblecito de El Cotillo, es uno de los restaurantes más frecuentado en el norte de Fuerteventura, tanto por turistas, que llegan bien recomendados, como por residentes, que no nos cansamos de repetir una y otra vez.

La Vaca Azul, in the small village of El Cotillo, is one of the most frequented restaurants in the north of Fuerteventura, both by tourists, who come well recommended, and by residents, who do not get tired of visiting it over and over again.

Katia y Claude (pareja francesa encantadora) y Fred (chef corso), pusieron en pie este restaurante en el 2005, cuando cogieron el traspaso de una cafetería, que ya llevaba este nombre tan peculiar desde 1982.

Los tres, muy familiarizados con el negocio de la restauración, se propusieron crear un restaurante enfocado en uno de los productos canarios por excelencia: el pescado —en todas sus modalidades y poco manipulado, pues ya es bueno por sí solo—, con un pequeño toque internacional muy especial. ¡La fórmula ha resultado perfecta!

Y si las vistas son de las mejores de El Cotillo (encima del Muelle Chico) y los platos están para chuparse los dedos, literalmente hablando, el trato del personal es, definitivamente, lo que hace que te enamores de este lugar. Como dice Claude, «tenemos una comida fresca, una cocina fina y un local inmejorable, pero lo que tenemos por encima de todo es amor por nuestra clientela».

Katia and Claude (a charming French couple) and Fred (Corsican chef), set up this restaurant in 2005, when they bought a transferred cafe that had already featured this peculiar name since 1982.

The three of them, very familiar with the restaurant business, decided to create a restaurant focused on one of the Canary Islands product par excellence: the fish, in all its forms and little manipulated, as it is already good in itself —with a small special international touch. The formula has turned out to be perfect!

And if the views are the best in Corralejo (above Muelle Chico) and its dishes are finger licking good, literally speaking, it’s the friendly staff what definitely makes you fall in love with this place. As Claude says, «we have a fresh food, fine cuisine and unbeatable premises but what definitely distinguishes us is the love for our customers.»

Conocido por todos los surfistas en la isla, Wenzel es un shaper cuyo logotipo en forma de W podéis ver en muchas de las tablas que recorren los picos de Fuerteventura.

Amante de su profesión, pone pasión, cariño y toda su experiencia de 18 años, en crear, artesanalmente, tablas duraderas, con buenos materiales, para que acompañen a cada surfista en una etapa de su vida. .6

Macaronesia: ¿Cuándo empieza tu relación con el mundo del surf?

Wenzel: El surf me había llamado la atención desde niño, pero mi padre me decía que en el Mediterráneo no había olas para surfear y la palabra de mi padre era ley. En el 92, cuando tenía 19 años, un amigo se compró una tabla y la probé, y desde el momento en que cogí la primera espuma supe que surfearía siempre.

M: ¿Y cómo empiezas a mezclarte con la resina y el foam?

W: En aquella época, cada vez que querías reparar un golpe de la tabla tenías que desplazarte unos 200kms, así que empecé a arreglar mis propios toques y en poco tiempo arreglaba los de todos los surfistas de mi playa. En el año 97 monté con un amigo un pequeño taller y allí empezamos a hacer las primeras tablas, si es que a aquello se le puede llamar así (jajaja).

M: ¿Y cuándo decides venir a Fuerteventura?

W: En el año 2000 mi gran amigo Gianluca vino a visitar Fuerteventura y a la vuelta de su viaje me contó maravillas de este sitio, así que en octubre de ese año dejé mi trabajo para Telecom Italia y me vine a vivir a la isla. De inmediato me encantó la forma de ser de la gente en España: eso de saludarse por la calle, estar rodeado de gente sencilla y cercana...

M: ¿Cómo se desarrolla tu profesión desde entonces?

W: Al poco tiempo de estar aquí Gianluca me presentó a Charly (Little Devil), otro shaper de la isla, y empecé a trabajar con él. A Charly tengo muchas cosas que agradecerle dentro de este mundo; con él aprendí a laminar y como quien dice a hacer tablas. En 2002 Charly decidió dejar aparcada esta profesión y me vendió todo su material, así que monté mi propio taller cerca del muelle de Corralejo.

En 2004 me surgió la oportunidad de trabajar lijando tablas Black en Tenerife, para un proyecto junto con el shaper Bruce McKee, y estuve 4 meses allí, aprendiendo muchas cosas que me han sido muy útiles en mi trabajo. Y luego me fui a trabajar a Bilbao, con otro shaper australiano, Christopher Hunt, por unos seis meses.

M: ¿Qué te apasiona más de tu profesión?

W: La posibilidad de trabajar con mis propias manos. Mi madre es pintora y a mi padre le apasionaba el modelismo, así que me venía en la genética lo de hacer trabajos manuales.

M: ¿Qué es lo más difícil de tu profesión?

W: Hacerle entender a la gente que «lo importante no es la flecha, sino el indio». La gente hoy se impacienta mucho; piden tablas con muchas prestaciones y pretenden que sea su horma perfecta desde el principio. Y yo pienso que, para sacarle a una tabla todo el partido posible, hacen falta muchísimos baños con ella. Esto no cuadra mucho con la vida rápida de hoy en día y con la cultura del «usar y tirar».

M: ¿Qué opinas de la industria del surf en serie?

W: Creo que hay muy buenas tablas hechas por máquinas, pero siempre dependen del hombre que esté detrás de esa máquina. Las grandes marcas, que ahora hacen su trabajo en serie, partieron con un shaper local apoyado por la gente de su playa, y eso es algo importante que no debería olvidarse.

M: ¿Qué opinas de la fabricación de tablas versus ecología?

W: El surf es contacto con la naturaleza pero, de todo lo que forma una tabla, lo único natural es el alma, que es de madera. El resto es todo derivado del petróleo. Hoy en día ya hay tecnología y materiales para hacer tablas ecológicas, pero el material es mucho más caro. En lugares donde el surf está más arraigado, sí se tiene esto en cuenta y a la gente no le importa gastarse un poco más, para surfear en concordancia con su ética.

the art of making boards

Age: 42 • Origin: Latin (Italy).

Known to all surfers on the island, Wenzel is a shaper whose W logo can be seen on many of the boards surfing the peaks of Fuerteventura. Lover of his profession, he puts passion, love and all his 18-year experience in creating handcrafted durable boards with good materials to accompany each surfer at one stage of their life.

Macaronesia: When did your relationship with the surfing world begin?

Wenzel: Surf had struck me as a child, but my father told me that there were no waves to surf in the Mediterranean and my father’s word was like law. In the year 92, when I was 19, a friend bought a board and I tried it, and from the moment I caught the first foam I knew I would always surf.

M: And how did you begin in the world of resin and foam?

W: At that time, whenever you wanted to repair a stroke on the table you had to move about 200kms, so I started to fix my own bumps and shortly after I was fixing those of all the surfers of my beach. In the year 97 I set up a little workshop, if that’s what you can call it (LOL), with a friend and there we started to make our first boards.

M: And when did you decide to come to Fuerteventura?

W: In the year 2000 my great friend Gianluca came to visit Fuerteventura and when he returned he told me wonders of this site, so in October that year I quit my job for Telecom .8

Italia and I moved to the island. I immediately loved the character of people in Spain: that of greeting in the street, being surrounded by simple and close people ...

M: How has your career developed since then?

W: Shortly after getting here Giancula introduced me to Charly (Little Devil), another shaper of the island, and I started working with him. I have many things to thank Charly in this world; with him I learned to roll and, as it were, to make boards. In 2002 Charly decided to set aside this profession and he sold me all his material, so I set up my own workshop near Corralejo pier.

In 2004 I got the opportunity to work sanding Black Tables in Tenerife, for a project with the shaper Bruce McKee, and I spent four months there, learning many things that have been very useful for my job. And then I went to work to Bilbao, with another Australian shaper, Christopher Hunt, for about six months.

M: What do you feel most passionate about in your career?

W: The opportunity to work with my own hands. My mother is a painter and my father was passionate about modelling, so manual labour is in my gene.

M: What is the hardest thing in your profession?

W: to make people understand that “It’s the Indian, not the arrow”. People today are very impatient; They ask for boards with many features and they expect them to be

their perfect last from the beginning. And I think that, to take full advantage of your board, it takes much training on it. This does not tally with the fast life of today and the culture of “disposable items”.

M: What do you think of the surf industry in series?

W: I think there are good boards made by machines, but they will always depend on the man who is behind the machine. Big brands, which now work in series, started out with a local shaper supported by the people of their beach, and that is an important thing that should not be forgotten.

M: And what is your view about making boards versus ecology?

W: Surfing is contact with nature but the only natural thing in all that makes up a board is its soul: the wood. The rest is all petroleum. Today there are technology and ecological materials to make tables, but the material is much more expensive. In places where surfing is more ingrained, people bear this in mind and they don’t mind spending a little more, to surf in line with their ethics.

La Tablada y El Moralito: dos nuevos parques eólicos en Fuerteventura El municipio de Tuineje acoge los dos nuevos parques eólicos que acaban de autorizarse en Fuerteventura, y que presentan una capacidad de 9,2MW cada uno.

Con esta iniciativa se parte una lanza a favor de las energías renovables, y no solo con estos, sino que hay en trámite 33 parques eólicos más en toda Canarias, consolidando así la apuesta por un nuevo modelo energético.

Atletas majoreros en los Mundiales de Atletismo Paola Sarabia y Darwin Echeverry, ambos del Tenerife CajaCanarias, vestirán la camiseta roja, representando a España en los dos campeonatos internacionales de Colombia .10

Con los resultados de este año, son dos los triunfos de esta embarcación en el mundial, tras el triunfo en el año 2009, en Santander.

El nadador majorero Alejandro Calderón, XVII Edición de la Vuelta en campeón de España Absoluto Kayak a Fuerteventura Pertenece al Club de Natación Las Escuevas y acaba de proclamarse Campeón absoluto y junior de España, en la prueba que tuvo lugar el mes pasado en Barcelona, con la medalla de oro en 200m espalda, categoría junior, plata en 200m estilo, categoría junior, y bronce absoluto.

Alejandro Calderón, con solo 16 años, aspira a formar parte del equipo de natación de España en los próximos juegos olímpicos de Río de Janeiro 2016, por lo que ingresará el próximo curso en el Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Barcelona, para continuar con sus estudios y su progresión.

La tasa más alta de mortalidad por tumores de Canarias Lanzarote y Fuerteventura son las dos islas del archipiélago que presentan la tasa más alta de mortalidad debido a tumores, según Aculanza (Asociación de Consumidores y Usuarios de Lanzarote); datos extraños teniendo en cuenta que en estas dos islas se cuenta con una de las poblaciones más jóvenes del archipiélago.

Algunas de las suposiciones apuntan a que los diagnósticos tardan mucho en realizarse, debido a las largas listas de espera, por tanto se achacan a una atención sanitaria insuficiente.

El majorero Oliver Herrera, Campeón del Mundo de la clase J80 de vela Fuerteventura toma posición en el mundo de la vela con la figura del majorero Oliver Herrera, del «Club de Regatas Fuerteventura Isla del Viento», de Puerto del Rosario, que junto al equipo del «Real Club Náutico de Arrecife», formado por Rayco Tabares (patrón), Lay Torres, Domingo Falero y Héctor González, en la embarcación «Hotel Princesa Yaiza», acaban de proclamarse Campeones del Mundo de la clase J80, en la última prueba celebrada en Kiel, Alemania.

Queda abierta la inscripción para formar parte en la decimoséptima edición de la Vuelta en Kayak a Fuerteventura, toda una aventura para los participantes de este evento deportivo, que además es una verdadera promoción turística para la isla majorera.

Rodando una serie documental en Fuerteventura La Villa Winter de Cofete es la protagonista de uno de los capítulos de la serie documental de 8, que está rodando el canal de televisión norteamericano «The History Channel», sobre la II Guerra Mundial, y que contará el papel que jugó esta localidad en tan importante acontecimiento histórico.

La serie documental se llamará «Hunting history» (A la caza de la historia), y estará narrada por los historiadores Lenny Depaul y Gerard Williams, junto al canario Jaime Rubio Rosales.

Plan de Recuperación de la lapa majorera La lapa majorera (Patella candei) es una especie endémica de la Macaronesia que, dentro del archipiélago canario, solo se encuentra en Fuerteventura, a pesar de que en la antigüedad se extendía por el litoral de todas las islas.

La principal amenaza de esta especie es el marisqueo, y en Fuerteventura se acaba de lanzar un Plan de Recuperación de la lapa majorera, actualmente categorizada como «en peligro de extinción», para evitar su desaparición.

Entre los objetivos de este plan están la protección y conservación del hábitat, la designación de las zonas críticas y la sensibilización, tanto del turista como del pueblo majorero, para evitar esta catástrofe.

The main threat to this species is shellfishing, and Fuerteventura has just launched a recovery plan of the Majorera limpet, now categorized as «endangered» to prevent their extinction.

The objectives of this plan are the habitat protection and conservation, the designation of the critical areas, and awareness of both tourists and residents to avoid this catastrophe.

Me uno a la petición de Agonane-Ecologistas en AcciónBen Magec, para que el Fuerteventura en Música vuelva a su origen de concienciación medioambiental. Que se busquen espacios alternativos para los conciertos nocturnos, y no perjudicar la playa de la Concha como se está haciendo, por un festival que cada año crece más.

Por favor, que el Ayuntamiento de la Oliva tenga la dignidad de retirar este cartel de la playa del Moro. En el cartel se indica la derecha de la playa balizada con banderas verdes, como la zona apta para el baño; justo la zona donde año tras año se ahogan los bañistas.

Están haciendo peatonal la calle Lepanto y han escogido precisamente el verano para las obras. Está toda la calle cortada y los negocios han quedado aislados, con accesos muy limitados y poco visibles. ¿No podrían hacer la obra en otra época y de otra manera?

I beg La Oliva town council to have the dignity to remove that poster on “La Playa del Moro”. On that poster they point the right of the marked out beach, with green flags, as the ideal bathing area, just the area where year after year more and more bathers are drowning.

They are turning Lepanto Street into pedestrian and they have chosen just the summer to do the works. The road is blocked and businesses have been isolated, with very limited and inconspicuous access. Couldn’t they do the works at another season and in a different way?

I join the request by Agonane-Ecologists in Action-Ben Magec so that Fuerteventura in Music returns to its origin of environmental awareness. Alternative venues for evening concerts should be sought not to damage La Playa de la Concha as it’s being done, in a festival that is growing and growing every year.

Otro Mar

Loris Garattoni Hace unos meses entrevistábamos en Macaronesia a Androniki Kapodistria, griega de nacimiento que conoció a su marido, Loris Garattoni (italiano), en Argelia, y juntos comenzaron un proyecto común relacionado con el mundo de la cerámica. Primero abrieron la «Turquoise Gallery», en la isla de Mikonos, y en junio de 2014 vinieron a Fuerteventura y montaron «Otro Mar», en el pueblecito de Lajares.

Hoy, entrevistamos a Loris, la otra parte del proyecto, para que nos cuente su visión de Otro Mar. Macaronesia: ¿Cuándo empieza tu relación con el mundo de la cerámica?

Loris: Cuando vivíamos en la ciudad de Faenza y mi mujer empezó a formarse en este arte. Ella necesitaba alguien que le ayudase a hacer las bases para las piezas de cerámica, y yo, que soy Ingeniero Civil, de inmediato empecé a colaborar. Pronto me apasioné por este mundo y decidí dejar mi profesión para hacer un proyecto común con ella.

M: ¿Cómo es el cambio de profesión, de Ingeniero Civil a artesano?

L: Pues, la verdad, gratificante. La Ingeniería Civil no permite mucha creatividad y desde que empecé a colaborar con Androniki se me despertó una parte artística que necesito dejar salir. Además, ahora dispongo de mucho más tiempo en mi vida, y eso no se paga con dinero.

M: ¿Cuál es la parte que más te apasiona del proceso?

L: Cuando viene un cliente con una idea nueva y tengo que reflejar esa idea en el papel antes de .22

Some months ago we interviewed Androniki Kapodistria, Greek-born, who met her husband, Loris Garattoni (Italian), in Algeria, and together they started an artistic project in the world of ceramics. First they opened the «Turquoise Gallery» in Mikonos Island, and in June 2014 they moved to Fuerteventura and set up «Otro Mar», in the little village of Lajares.

Today we interview Loris, the other half of «Otro Mar» so that he tells us about their wonderful art project.

Macaronesia: When did you start your relationship with the world of ceramics?

Loris: when we were living in Faenza, Italy, and my wife began training in this art. She needed help making the bases for some ceramic artworks and I, being a Civil engineer, decided I wanted to help her. Soon this world of art really interested me and I decided to leave my profession to start this mutual project with her.

M: How did you feel about this change of profession from civil engineer to artisan?

L: To tell you the truth, really satisfying! Civil engineering doesn’t allow for much creativity and, from the moment I started to collaborate with Androniki, an artistic side of me awakened, a side of me that needed to be explored.

Moreover, now I have much more time in my life for family, which is really valuable.

M: Which part interests you the most in this process?

L: When a customer brings in a new idea and I have to put it to paper before making it a reality. It has to be designed from scratch, a real personal challenge!

M: What distinguishes ‘Otro Mar’?

L: Our relationship with the Ocean, the feeling of holidays, summer colours, life around nature... the uniqueness of our handmade works (we have an artisan license), Androniki’s eye for colour, the quality of the technical supports...

M: What can we find in ‘Otro Mar’?

L: High quality, unique and very colourful pieces of art and decoration. Small souvenirs of Fuerteventura, big frames,

Poco a poco en Corralejo van surgiendo proyectos que nos acercan a las nuevas tendencias y hacen que no seamos solo una isla de sol y playa en el Atlántico, fuera del tiempo.

Al entrar en The WorkShop tienes la sensación de estar en cualquier local del centro de Barcelona, donde la creatividad rompe las barreras de lo establecido, para ofrecernos novedades que nos sorprenden.

The WorkShop es un proyecto creado por dos artistas Noemí Leandro (diseñadora de moda, creativa y ceramista) y Sergej Titov (Installation artist), una pareja que comparte por encima de todo su pasión por el arte y la creatividad.

A Noemí ya la entrevistamos en Macaronesia, hace justo ahora un año —creadora de la marca Nikau— y, junto a su novio Sergej, le han dado forma a este proyecto llamado The WorkShop, que lleva este nombre precisamente porque, entre otras cosas, es un taller (workshop en inglés) de creación.

The WorkShop es una tienda, taller, café-bar y galería de objetos de decoración, donde todo el mobiliario, que está también a la venta, ha sido creado por Sergej y por Noemí, con materiales reciclados obtenidos de diferentes enclaves de Fuerteventura. El concepto de reciclaje, según nos cuentan, tiene tres líneas muy positivas: por un lado está la parte ecologista, que pretende reutilizar los recursos; por otro lado la parte económica, ya que se obtienen muebles de diseño a unos precios muy asequibles, y por último la exclusividad, ya que las piezas siempre son únicas.

«El cliente puede venir a ver la galería y llevarse algún mueble u objeto de decoración, o puede traernos su propio material y pedirnos que se lo restauremos siguiendo un estilo determinado», nos comenta Noemí, que también nos cuenta que esta idea del reciclaje está teniendo muy buenos resultados, y que han realizado la decoración de algunos locales de Corralejo, como «La Arrocería» o la terraza del «Buena Onda». Como decoradores de interiores, diseñan espacios e instalaciones para eventos, que destacan por su originalidad.

Con mucho gusto y elegancia crean ambientes, añadiendo elementos tecnológicos como proyecciones audiovisuales.

Y además del mobiliario y la decoración, en The WorkShop encontramos todas las prendas de confección de la marca Nikau que tanto gustan en nuestra isla.

En lo que se refiere a la parte de café-bar, en TheWorkShop podrás tomar buenas cervezas y vinos, cócteles, tés del mundo, y bocados típicos de picoteo como la mojama, las huevas de merluza o los ibéricos.

Una tarde a la semana, normalmente los jueves, organizan un tapeo gastronómico en torno a la comida típica de un país. En estos encuentros puedes probar la comida con tu consumición.

The workshop is a project created by two artists: Naomi Leandro (fashion designer, creative and ceramist) and Sergej Titov (Installation artist), a couple who shares above all their passion for art and creativity.

Naomi was already interviewed in Macaronesia, just one year ago now —creator of the brand Nikau—, and together with her boyfriend Sergej they have shaped this project called The WorkShop, that takes this name just because, among other things, it’s a workshop of creation.

The WorkShop is a store, workshop, cafe bar and gallery of decorative objects where all the furniture, which is also for sale, has been created by Sergej and Naomi with recycled materials obtained from different enclaves of Fuerteventura.

The concept of recycling, we are told, has three very positive lines: one is the environmental part, which aims to reuse resources; on the other hand, the economic side, as designer furniture is obtained at very affordable prices, and finally exclusivity, since the pieces are always unique.

«The customer can come to visit the gallery and take a piece of furniture or a decorative object, or you can bring your own material and ask us to restore it following a certain style,» Naomi says, who also tells us that this idea of recycling is having very good results, that they have made the decoration of some premises in Corralejo, such as «La Arrocería» or the terrace of «Buena Onda». As interior designers, they design event venues and facilities, distinguished by their originality.

They create atmospheres with taste and elegance, adding technological elements such as audiovisual projections.

And apart from furniture and decor at The WorkShop we find all the RMG of the brand Nikau, so appreciated on our island.

As regards the Cafe-bar, in The WorkShop you can have good beer and wine, cocktails, teas of the world, and traditional snacks such as «mojama» (salted tuna), hake roe and Iberian products.

One afternoon a week, usually on Thursdays, they organize a gastronomic event of typical «tapas» of a particular country.

At these gatherings you can taste the food with your drink.

What’s the best time to exercise in Summer? ¿Sabes cuáles son las mejores horas del día para practicar deporte y ejercicio físico durante los meses de verano? Descubre cuáles son, para evitar riesgos de salud innecesarios.

No hay duda de que durante los meses más calurosos del año debemos aumentar las precauciones en lo que a la práctica deportiva se refiere, pero evidentemente no es ni mucho menos recomendable dejar de practica ejercicio físico.

En relación a los beneficios del ejercicio, es sumamente importante practicar ejercicio físico de forma regular, no solo para disfrutar de una buena salud, sino para tener un peso adecuado y mantenernos físicamente activos (lo que a la larga, según vamos envejeciendo, nuestro organismo agradecerá).

Para disfrutar de este fantástico evento necesitas encontrar un lugar oscuro y esperar a que aparezcan los radiantes meteoritos, mejor con la ayuda de un astrónomo experto. También podéis aprovechar la oportunidad para observar por telescopio el planeta Saturno, que estará en una posición excelente para admirar sus anillos, o alguna de las nebulosas y núcleos estelares que ocupan la vía láctea, realmente fantástica en esta época para observar desde Fuerteventura.
