3. Desde que en 2012 comenzara su andadura el Reef, en la Avenida Marítima de Corralejo, varios cambios han tenido lugar en su concepto y organización. A día de hoy, con toda una trayectoria a sus espaldas, los objetivos están claros, tanto en su oferta de diversión y entretenimiento como en la gastronómica. Nuestra visita al restaurante Reef nos sorprendió gratamente. Nos recibe Alfredo Álvarez, un profesional de la hostelería, propietario actual de dos restaurantes en Vigo reconocidos entre los mejores de Galicia. En el menú de Reef nos encontramos una cocina contemporánea sencilla, sincera y sin artiﬁcios; basada en productos de temporada y de excelente calidad, acompañados de guarniciones bien pensadas, y una presentación impecable. Cuando se habla de potencia, slabs, «olas secas» y adrenalina, la cantera de bodyboard de Fuerteventura da un paso adelante, y es que toda una generación de chiquillos de esta isla se pasaron su niñez jugando con verdaderos monstruos de agua y sal, en las que, a día de hoy, son unas de las mejores olas de Europa. Ya hemos entrevistado a muchos de estos protagonistas, y en esta ocasión es el turno de Jonathan o, como todos le conocen, Chencho.

Macaronesia: ¿Cuándo empiezas a moverte entre las espumas? Chencho: Con 11 años, cuando unos amigos me enseñaron la ola de «El Muelle», que está cerca de mi casa. Un día me prestaron unas aletas y un boogie, me lancé al agua y desde ese momento todo cambió; empecé a centrarme en surfear las olas, descubrí sensaciones, conocí a gente nueva y todo esto pasó a ser un estilo de vida hasta hoy. M: ¿Por dónde surfeabais? Ch: Siempre por el este de la isla, hasta que con 13 años conocimos a Heraclio (el Cani)

y nos empezó a llevar a olas más fuertes, agresivas y con más potencia. Desde ahí la cantera de bodyboard de Puerto empezó a evolucionar bastante. M: Descríbenos la sensación de un buen baño. Ch: Pues es muy difícil explicar con palabras, pero diría que es un extra de motivación, adrenalina, libertad, felicidad… M: ¿Has competido? Ch: Sí, empecé a competir con 14 años y estuve compitiendo hasta los 24. Después me dediqué a viajar por mi cuenta y dejé de lado el tema de las competiciones, y

ahora estoy de nuevo en este mundillo. Fui campeón de España en Punta Blanca «Tenerife», en el año 2001, y mi último buen resultado fue el año pasado, obteniendo el primer puesto en el campeonato de Garcey «Fuerteventura». M: ¿Qué costas del mundo has surfeado? Ch: Las de Francia, España, Portugal, México e Indonesia. M: ¿Qué puntuación le darías a Fuerteven tura como destino de surf? Ch: Mi puntuación sería un 10. bodyboard y el surfing, con un clima perfecto y buenos swells. M: ¿Cómo evalúas la evolución de Fuer teventura respecto al mundo del bodyboard? Ch: Creo que está evolucionando de una manera muy progresiva y buena, ya que cada vez es más conocido este deporte. Hay jóvenes que lo están dando todo en el agua, como por ejemplo el majorero Octavio González, que está obteniendo muy buenos resultados y dejando gran nivel.

M: Si no vivieras aquí, ¿dónde vivirías? Ch: Viviría en Hawái o Indonesia, ya que son sitios con un gran potencial de olas muy buenas que me permitirían seguir practicando y mejorando en este deporte. M: Algo más que quieras decir… Ch: Sí, agradecer a mis patrocinadores South Wear Family y a 360 Rotulación, por confiar en mí y por todo el apoyo y la motivación que me han dado. When speaking of power, slabs, «dry waves» and adrenaline the bodyboard team in Fuerteventura takes a step forward, since a whole generation of kids in this island have spent their childhood playing with real water and salt monsters, which nowadays are some of the best waves in Europe. We have interviewed many of these characters, and this time it’s the turn of Jonathan or, as we all know him, Chencho. Macaronesia: When did you start moving among the foam? Chencho: When I was 11 some friends showed me «El Muelle» wave, which is near my home. One day they lent me some fins and a boogie, I jumped into the water and from that moment everything changed; I began to focus on surfing the waves, I discovered feelings, met new people and this has become a new lifestyle to date.

M: Where did you use to surf? Ch: Always in the east of the island, until we met Heraclio (Cani) when we were 13 and he began to take us to stronger, more aggressive and higher waves. From then on the bodyboard team in Puerto began to evolve substantially. M: Describe the feeling of a good surfing session. Ch: Well it is very difficult to explain in words, but I’d say it is an extra of motivation, adrenaline, freedom, happiness... M: Have you competed? Ch: Yes, I started competing when I was 14 and until I was 24. Then I started travelling on my own and put competitions aside, and now I’m back in this world. I was the Spanish champion in Punta Blanca «Tenerife», in 2001, and my last good result was last year, ranking first in Garcey championship in «Fuerteventura».

M: What coastlines in the world have you surfed? Ch: Those in France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico and Indonesia. M: What grade would you give to Fuerte ventura as a surfing destination? Ch: From 0 to 10, my score would be 10. Fuerteventura is a popular destination for bodyboarding and surfing, with perfect weather and good swells. M: How do you assess the evolution of Fuer teventura regarding bodyboarding? Ch: I think it is evolving in a very progressive and positive way, as it is becoming an increasingly known sport. There are young people who are really pulling their weight in this sport, such as Octavio Gonzalez (majorero), who is getting very good results and showing a high level. M:If you didn’t live here,where would you live? Ch: I would live in Hawaii or Indonesia because

they are two places with great potential for good waves, which would allow me to keep practising and improving in this sport. M: Anything else you want to say ... Un tenor majorero en el Auditorio Nacional José Antonio Concepción es el primer tenor de Fuerteventura en llegar al Auditorio Nacional, representando el papel de Calaf en la ópera Turandot, de Giacomo Puccini, que inauguró en Madrid el pasado 30 de abril, junto a la Orquesta y Coro Filarmonía de la capital. Este majorero, que comenzó en la Agrupación Folclórica de Tetir, ya ha actuado en la Ópera de Praga, y ha recibido enseñanzas de personalidades como Alfredo Kraus, Ana Fernault, Ghena Dimitrova y Mirella Freni.

A majorero tenor at the National Auditorium José Antonio Concepción is the first tenor from Fuerteventura to reach the National Auditorium, playing the role of Calaf in Turandot Opera, by Giacomo Puccini, which opened in Madrid last April 30th, along with the Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus of the capital. This majorero, who started out in the Folk Association of Tetir, has already performed at the Prague State Opera, and has received tuition by celebrities like Alfredo Kraus, Ana Fernault, Ghena Dimitrova and Mirella Freni.

Los quesos majoreros siguen triunfando en España El pasado mes de abril tuvo lugar, en el Salón del Gourmet de Madrid, el sexto campeonato de los mejores quesos de España 2015, donde el Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura se alzó con 3 medallas de oro, en sus marcas Maxorata, El Tofio y Selectum. De la marca Maxorata el galardonado ha sido el curado al pimentón, en la categoría de curados de cabra; de El Tofio ganó el semi-curado al pimentón y, de Selectum, el oro se lo llevó el queso mezcla de vaca y cabra. Se presentaron unos 350 quesos, de 48 marcas diferentes, que compitieron en 12 categorías, con una alta representación de quesos canarios.

Majorero cheeses keep succeeding in Spain Last April the sixth championship of the best Spanish cheeses 2015 took place in «Salón Gourmet de Madrid», where the Cattlemen from Fuerteventura Group won three gold medals in their brands Maxorata, El Tofio and Selectum. From the brand Maxorata, the awarded cheese was the mature one with paprika, in the category of mature goat cheese; El Tofio won the semimature paprika cheese award, and regarding Selectum, the gold medal was awarded to the mixture of cow and goat cheese. 350 cheeses from 48 different brands were competing in 12 categories, with a high representation of Canary Island cheeses.

Esta zona costera permitirá que los dueños paseen a sus mascotas, gracias a una petición originada en la plataforma change.org, donde más de un millar de ciudadanos han plasmado su firma para que los peludos puedan tener una zona donde pasear en libertad. Entre las normas, que aparecen en los carteles colocados para informar a los usuarios, está: no soltar a los perros que no puedan ser controlados, no molestar a los bañistas y recoger los excrementos.

Dog beach in Corralejo Since last April, the beach near Bristol, in Corralejo, has been made available to the dogs of the town. This coastal area will allow pet owners to walk them, thanks to a petition originated in the change.org platform where more than a thousand citizens have signed so that these furry animals can have an area to walk freely. Among the rules that appear on signs placed to inform users are: not to let loose those dogs that can not be controlled, not to disturb the bathers and to pick up the droppings.

Los próximos días 13 y 14 de mayo tendrá lugar, en Santa Cruz de Tenerife, el II Salón de Gastronomía Canaria, donde se decidirán y entregarán los premios a los mejores cocine-

ros de Canarias. Entre los diez finalistas, cinco pertenecen a hoteles y restaurantes de Tenerife, dos a La Palma y los tres restantes a Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura y Lanzarote. El representante majorero de esta final es el señor José Manuel Sedes López. El ganador recibirá un premio de 1.500€, el segundo 1000€ y el tercero 600€, habiendo también un premio de 500€ para el mejor ayudante de cocina.

XI Regional Championship of Chefs in The Canary Islands The next 13th and 14th of May the second gastronomy show of the Canary Islands will take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where prizes will be awarded to the best chefs in the Islands. Among the ten finalists, five belong to hotels and restaurants in Tenerife, two, to La Palma and the remaining three to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The majorero representative of this final is Mr. José Manuel Sedes López. The winner will receive a prize o 1.500€; the second, 1000€, and third one, 600 €, apart from a 500€ prize for the best cook assistant.

A vueltas con el caso de Montserrat y los gatitos Montserrat, vecina de Corralejo, emprendió una lucha contra el Ayuntamiento de La Oliva desde noviembre del año pasado. Tras recibir una sanción por dar de comer a unos gatitos de la calle, se lanzó a interponer recursos, como una protesta a un sistema de leyes desmesuradas. Según estas leyes, en la vía pública queda prohibido facilitar cualquier tipo de alimento a animales, y en particular a palomas, gaviotas, perros y gatos, al ser un acto contrario a la limpieza y decoro de la vía pública. Para Montse, estos gatos, que están bien cuidados, castrados y limpios, no son más que un bien para la sociedad, ya que además limpian la calle de cucarachas y ratones. A su lucha, el Ayuntamiento de La Oliva contestó, en un artículo en el número de diciembre de la revista Vecinos, que aún no se había tramitado ninguna sanción contra esta señora, y que las sanciones propuestas para este tipo de faltas rondan los 50€. Cuando parecía que Montse había triunfado, en febrero de este año recibió una sanción de 250€ que, por supuesto, vuelve a estar recurrida. Según Montse, «además de intentar hacerme quedar como embustera, diciendo que no me habían sancionado aún y que la cuantía que me decían inicialmente de 750€ no era cierta, ahora continúan presio-

Back to the case of Montserrat and the kittens Montserrat, neighbour from Corralejo, has undertaken a struggle against the Town Council of La Oliva since November last year. After being fined for feeding feral kittens, she presented appeals, as a complaint against a system of abusive laws. Under these laws, providing animals, especially pigeons, seagulls, dogs and cats, with any kind of food on public roads is forbidden, being considered as an act against cleanliness and decorum. To Montse, these cats, which are well kept, clean and neutered, aren’t but good for society, as they clean the streets of cockroaches and mice. To her struggle, the Town Council of La Oliva answered, in an article in the December issue of «Vecinos» magazine that no fine had been processed against this lady yet, and that the proposed penalties for such offences are around 50€. When it seemed that Montse had

succeeded, in February this year she received a fine of 250€ against which, of course, she has appealed again. According to Montse, «besides trying to make me look like a liar, saying they had not fined me yet and that the initial amount of 750 € was not true, now they keep pressing, and the fine has dropped considerably from 750 € to € 250, but I will not pay a cent. «Tiendas libres de bolsas de plástico» Clean Ocean Project ha iniciado una campaña para reducir el impacto del plástico en nuestras vidas y en el medio ambiente, consistente en hacer firmar a los dueños de los comercios un contrato de compromiso de por vida con el medio ambiente, dejando de utilizar bolsas de plástico de un solo uso en sus negocios. Las alternativas: «fomentar que la gente traiga su propia bolsa de tela, entregar bolsas de papel o reutilizar cajas de cartón de sus proveedores». Shops without plastic bags Clean Ocean Project has launched a campaign to reduce the impact of plastic in our lives and in the environment, which consists of making shop owners sign a lifelong commitment to the environment contract, getting rid of singleuse plastic bags in their business. LEARN TO GREET YOUR DOG Tu perro te ve como una especie de perro, y es bueno para él que te comportes como tal, ya que solo puede entenderte según sus esquemas caninos. De no hacer esto, acabarás te niendo un perro confundido, debido a una convivencia basada en fallos en la comunicación. Para tu perro tus manos son como dos cabezas, te ve como un perro andando sobre sus patas traseras y con tres cabezas. Con tus manos imitas lo que los perros hacen con la boca: acariciar es como lamer, y morder lo imitas apretando. Por esto tienes que tener en cuenta cómo saludar a tu perro. Entre canes, el perro sumiso saluda a sus superiores chupándole las comisuras de la boca. Observa cómo tu perro intenta saludarte de la misma manera; intenta chuparte la cara y las manos. En caso de que lama tus manos no debes pensar que te está dando besitos para decirte que te quiere mucho, como si fuera una persona, porque interpretarlo así fácilmente da lugar a que le respondas para decirle lo mismo, que le quieres mucho, como lo haría una persona a otra persona. Your dog thinks you are a kind of dog, and it’s good for him that you behave as such, since it can only understand you according to their canine schemes. If you don’t do that, you’ll end up having a confused dog, due to coexistence based on miscommunication. For your dog your hands are like two heads, it sees you as dog walking on its rear legs and having three heads. With your hands you imitate what dogs do with their mouth: caressing is like licking and you imitate their biting by pressing. For this reason you have to consider how to greet your dog. Among dogs, the submissive dog greets its superiors by sucking the corners of their mouths. Observe that your dog tries to greet you in the same way; he tries to lick your face and hands. Should he lick your hands you must not think that he is kissing you to say I love you dearly, as if it were a person, because interpreting it this way may easily lead to your greeting him back in the same way, saying you love it as well, as a person would do with another one.

Entre perros, los saludos no suelen ser de igual a igual, más bien es el inferior el que saluda a su superior. El inferior saluda de una manera respetuosa, sin ofender. Así que ya sabes, cuando vayas a saludar a tu perro intenta ponerte un poco en su forma de ver las cosas, ayudará mucho en vuestra comunicación. Otro modelo financiero es posible?

A medida que pasa este tiempo de crisis se aprecia con creciente evidencia que las re cetas de siempre no funcionan y que, en lo referente al sistema financiero, continúan los temores a una repetición de la jugada. Ante eso, se echan de menos voces que aporten propuestas innovadoras, nacidas del rigor, que abran un horizonte algo más sereno y fructífero. Permitan que hoy les hable de dos propuestas surgidas de una de esas voces, Antonio Quero Mussot, Coordinador de Factoría Democrática y Consejero del Director General de Presupuesto de la Comisión Europea, donde participa en la elaboración de la propuesta legislativa para la creación del Fondo Europeo de Inversiones Estratégicas. Es el autor del libro, de reciente publicación «La Reforma Progresista del siste ma Financiero», Ediciones Catarata (ISBN: 97884-8319-957-2), con prólogo del catedrático de Economía Juan Torres. Partiendo del «Plan Chicago», una colección de reformas bancarias sugeridas por economistas a raíz de la Gran Depresión, Antoni Quero propone, por una parte, separar las

actividades de crédito y depósitos y confiar estos últimos a una entidad única, el Banco Ciudadano de Depósitos, entidad de servicio público cuyo objetivo sería la estabilidad financiera y económica, además de ofrecer una garantía segura para los depósitos, que quedarían a resguardo, dejando el crédito en manos de entidades financieras —públicas, privadas, cooperativistas o mutualistas— en régimen de libre competencia. La otra propuesta es una tasa progresiva so bre la especulación, variación de la conocida como Tasa Tobin, con la que propone combatir la inestabilidad causada por la maximización de la rentabilidad financiera que empuja a acumular riesgos y busca alcanzar

As the period of crisis passes by we notice an increasing evidence that the traditional recipes do not work, and that regarding the financial system the fears of a new recession still continue. Against this background we miss new voices that provide innovative proposals, sprung from rigour, opening up more serene and fruitful prospects. Let me speak now about two proposals from one of those voices, Antonio Quero Mussot, Democratic Factory Coordinator and Advisor to the General Budget of the European Commission Manager, where he takes part in the development of the legislative proposal for the creation of the European Fund for Strategic Investments. He is the author of the recently published «La Reforma Progresista del Sistema Financiero» (The Progressive Reform of the Financial System), Catarata Editions (ISBN: 978-84-8319-957-2), with a prologue by the Professor of Economics Juan Torres. Together with increased economic stability and all its derivations, we find strong social proposals such as a progressive VAT rate, increased tax revenues, decreased tax fraud and criminal financial activities, free deposit accounts and also suggestions on managing models of a Citizens’ Deposits Bank ensuring the financial sovereignty of democratic states which prevent the disasters caused by the current model. Its informative nature and readability for beginners in financial texts are particularly welcomed, so I won’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting to know about these initiatives. And Antonio Quero will speak in depth about them next Wednesday May 13th at the «Centro Bibliotecario Insular» (Puerto del Rosario), at 11:30 a.m. We’ll be looking forward to your presence and participation in the debate.

Tras más de 15 años de trayectoria artística en Fuerteventura, por fin me he animado a abrir un espacio propio en la capital, gracias al gran grupo de alumnos y con el apoyo de la Asociación Masdance Fuerteventura.

After an over-15 year career in Fuerteventura, at last I have found the courage to open my own space in the capital, thanks to the large group of students and the support from «Asociación Masdance Fuerteventura».

Espacio Danza Fuerteventura se crea para ofrecer una formación continuada de calidad en las especialidades de Danza Clásica, Contemporánea, HipHop, Modern Jazz y Flamenco, entre otras. Contamos con dos aulas diferenciadas que nos permiten distrubuir los cursos por edades y niveles, así adecuamos la enseñanza a las posibilidades de aprendizaje de cada alumno. No podemos negar que la insularidad supone algún inconveniente para acceder a los estudios de grado en los conservatorios oficiales, así que desde Espacio Danza Fuerteventura procuramos la formación necesaria para que aquellos que quieran dedicarse a la Danza puedan hacerlo, ofreciéndoles la posibilidad de que se presenten a los exámenes oficiales. We cannot deny that insularity means a drawback to access bachelor studies at Official Conservatories, so from «Espacio Danza Fuerteventura» we try to provide the necessary education so that those wanting to engage in dance can do so, offering them the possibility to sit the official examinations. Although our intention is to train future dancers, we don’t want to forget the diffusion of dance as the main aim of the school. D: Solo un tío de mi madre, que está metido en este mundo desde hace tiempo. M: ¿Qué te empujó a comenzar? D: Después de ver la película Brave, comentando un día con una amiga, decidimos apuntarnos al Club Maxoarco, ya que el primer mes es de prueba y gratuito. Desde mi primer lanzamiento se me dio bien y me encantó. M: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de este mundo? D: A parte de que me encanta este deporte, el ambiente del club es lo mejor. Somos como una gran familia. Nos animamos mucho unos a otros. M: ¿Qué cualidades se necesitan para este deporte? D: Hay que tener mucho aguante con la espalda, tener fuerza en los brazos y omóplatos, y sobre todo hay que tener mucha capacidad de concentración. M: ¿Entrenas a menudo?, ¿con quién? D: Todos los lunes, miércoles y viernes, siempre que tenga todas mis tareas del cole controladas. Mi entrenador se llama José Antonio Ruiz González. M: ¿Cómo son los entrenamientos? D: Hasta este mes pasado entrenábamos en sala, porque en invierno la temporada es a cubierto, pero a partir de ahora empieza la liga al aire libre (hasta octubre), y entrenamos

en un solar. En los entrenamientos nos enseñan a calentar, con ejercicios de espalda para fortalecer y no lesionarnos, y nos enseñan técnica. M: ¿Cuál es tu modalidad? D: De momento el arco olímpico, que es el que te permite apuntar y tirar. Ahora mismo estoy lanzando a 30m en aire libre, con un arco de 28 libras, que es la fuerza que debes tener para poder abrir el arco. M: Háblanos de tu éxito en el pasado Trofeo Atlántico tiro con arco-sala de Canarias. D: Fue muy emocionante y una sorpresa para todos. En la final hice tres tiradas, de tres flechas cada una, y puntué 10 (lo máximo) con 3 de esas 9 flechas. Estaba muy nerviosa, porque eran adultos y yo aún no tengo 14 años, y porque me tocó competir contra gente que no conocía, pero al final todo salió genial. M: Algo más que quieras decir… D: Animo a todos a que prueben este deporte. Seguro que les encanta. Y doy las gracias a mi familia, por su apoyo, y a mi entrenador. El Club Maxoarco de Puerto del Rosario consiguió 3 primeras posiciones en el Trofeo Atlántico tiro con arco-sala de Canarias del pasado mes de marzo: Davinia quedó primera en arco olímpico, Nikolay quedó primero en arco compuesto y Alexander tercero de los menores de 14 años. Enhorabuena a todos estos deportistas.

To everyone’s surprise, at the age of just 13, Davinia María Morcillo Ramos, majorera with Cordovan blood, has won the first position in the VI Atlantic Tournament of indoor archery in the Canary Islands, Adult Olympic modality, when in fact she should have participated in U14.

M: How are the workouts? D: Until last month we trained indoors, as it was the winter season, but from now onwards the outdoor league begins (through October), and we train on a plot of land. We are taught to pre-heat, with back exercises to strengthen it and not to get injured, and they teach us technique. M: What is your speciality? D: At the moment, Olympic archery, which is what allows you to aim and shoot. Right now I’m throwing 30m outdoors with a 28-pound bow, which is the strength you must have to open the bow. M: Tell us about your success in the last Atlantic Tournament of indoor archery in the Canary Islands. D: It was very exciting and surprising for everyone. In the final I shot three times in a rows, three arrows each time, and I scored 10 (the maximum) with 3 out of those nine arrows. I was very nervous, because they were adults and I am not 14 yet, and because I had to compete against people I didn’t know, but in the end everything turned out to be great. una planta para las alergias Perilla Frutescens: a plant for allergies LOS QUE PADECÉIS DE ENFERMEDADES RESPIRATORIAS TIPO ALÉRGICAS SABÉIS QUE ESTA ÉPOCA DEL AÑO ES UNA DE LAS PEORES. OS PRESENTAMOS ESTA PLANTA, GRAN DESCONOCIDA PARA NUESTRA CULTURA, PERO MUY UTILIZADA EN LA INDIA Y EL ASIA ORIENTAL, COMO PLANTA GASTRONÓMICA Y TAMBIÉN MEDICINAL. Las Perillas son plantas anuales, pertenecientes a la familia de las lamiáceas, que agradece los climas templados. Dentro de las Perillas existen muchas variedades, pero hablaremos en concreto de la Perilla frutescens var. crispa, que puede ser de hojas verdes o moradas, y que también recibe el nombre de shiso, menta púrpura (la de hojas moradas) o albahaca japonesa. Ofrece grandes aportes de minerales, vitaminas (principalmente E), hierro, calcio, ácido graso omega 3, ácido

alfa-linoleico y ácido rosmarínico. Su alto contenido de este último le confiere propiedades anti-inflamatorias, antioxidantes y antimicrobianas, siendo aconsejada para afecciones respiratorias, asma, resfriados, gripes y para reacciones anafilácticas provocadas por algunos alimentos, como el pescado, el marisco, cacahuetes… y también para algunas picaduras, tales como las de abeja. En la cultura china se utiliza para activar el sistema inmune. Uno de los beneficios de esta planta, al contrario que los antihistamínicos que se suelen utilizar para las alergias, es que no provoca la respuesta del sistema inmune, por lo que no aparecen edemas ni líquido.

Perillas are annual plants belonging to the Lamiacease family, and they like temperate climates. Within Perillas there are many varieties, but we’ll talk specifically about the Perilla frutescens variety. crispa, which can have green or purple leaves, and can also be called shiso, purple mint (purple leaves) or Japanese basil. It offers large concentration of minerals, vitamins (mainly E), iron, calcium, omega 3 fatty acid, alphalinolenic acid and rosmarinic acid. Its high content of the latter provides it with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, being recommended for respiratory diseases, asthma, colds, flu and anaphylactic reactions to some foods, such as fish, seafood, peanuts... and for some stings, such as bee’s. In Chinese culture it is used to activate the immune system. One benefit of this plant, unlike antihistamines that are commonly used for allergies, is that it does not cause a reaction of the immune system, so neither oedemas nor fluids appear.

Culinarios: en la cocina oriental se usa para preservar y esterilizar alimentos y también como acompañamiento de platos. Para los japoneses, una de las funciones de las de hoja verde es envolver el pescado crudo (Sashimi) para matar el temido Anisakis (parásito que afecta al pescado y a otros animales marinos, y produce reacciones anafilácticas graves en los humanos) y otros parásitos que contiene el pescado sin cocinar. La variante morada se utiliza como colorante culinario. También se usan las hojas para realizar tés y para muchas otras cosas en otras cultural orientales. Medicinales: se emplea para problemas respiratorios, alergias alimenticias y primaverales, gripe, resfriados, rinopatías, tabaquismo, acné y cicatrización de heridas, dermatitis atópica, forúnculos, psoriasis, quemaduras, urticaria, artritis, reuma, molestias del embarazo, úlceras gástricas y cáncer. Se recomienda su uso en infusión, con una cucharada rasa de planta seca por taza, reposada entre diez y quince minutos. Es de sabor muy amargo, así que es bueno acompañarla de otra planta, como anís verde o limón, o de miel para disimular el gusto. También se usa el extracto de la planta, el aceite de sus semillas, las hojas maceradas en aceite durante 40 días, por ejemplo en caso de reacciones alérgicas o afecciones de la piel, y los vahos para limpiar las vías respiratorias. Tiene un ligero efecto sedante, por lo que se recomienda precaución en su uso, no más de 2 o 3 tazas de infusión al día, sobre todo si se conduce o maneja maquinaria pesada.

Medicinal: it is used for breathing problems, nutritional and spring allergies, flu, colds, nasal disease, smoking, acne and wound healing, atopic dermatitis, boils, psoriasis, burns, rash, arthritis, rheumatism, pregnancy discomforts, gastric ulcers and cancer. Its use in infusion is recommended, with a spoonful of dried plant per cup, leaving it to brew between ten and fifteen minutes. Its flavour is very bitter, so it’s good to accompany it with another plant, like anise, or lemon or honey to mask its taste. The extract of the plant is also used, the oil of its seeds, the leaves macerated in oil for 40 days, for example in case of allergic reactions or skin complaints, and breathing its steam after boiling it is also recommendable to clear the respiratory tract. It has a mild sedative effect, so caution is advised when taking it, no more than 2 or 3 cups of infusion a day, especially if driving or operating heavy machinery.
