ALULA RÉSIDENCE D’ARTISTES ARTIST RESIDENCY

La Royale Commission for AlUla (RCU) a été créée par décret royal en juillet 2017 pour préserver et développer AlUla, une région d'importance naturelle et culturelle exceptionnelle, dans le nord-ouest de l'Arabie Saoudite. Suite à un accord bilatéral signé le 10 avril 2018 à l'Elysée, l'Agence française Afalula a vu le jour à Paris, en juillet 2018, pour accompagner le développement d'AlUla. Une coopération historique s'est établie entre les deux nations, qui vise à renforcer le rayonnement culturel et historique saoudien et à faire de la région d'AlUla une destination qui attirera les visiteurs du monde entier. Afalula a pour mission d'aider son partenaire saoudien, RCU, dans la co-construction du développement économique, touristique et culturel d'AlUla. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) was established by royal decree in July 2017 to preserve and develop AlUla, a region of outstanding natural and cultural significance, in north-west Saudi Arabia. Following a bilateral agreement signed on 10 April 2018 at the Elysee Palace, the French Agency Afalula was founded in Paris, in July 2018, to support Saudi Arabia development of AlUla. It sets out an historic cooperation between the two nations, which aims to strengthen Saudi cultural and historic outreach and make the AlUla region a worldclass destination for visitors from around the globe. Afalula’s mission is to help its Saudi partner, RCU, in the co-construction of the economic, touristic, and cultural development of AlUla. The Agency gathers a full range of leading French experts in the project's key fields: cultural engineering, archaeology, architecture and urban planning, agriculture and botany, tourism, education, security, water sécurité, gestion durable de l’environnement, tout en préservant le patrimoine naturel et historique de la région. Cela englobe un large éventail d'initiatives dans les domaines de l'archéologie, du tourisme, de la culture, de l'éducation et des arts, reflétant un engagement à répondre aux priorités de diversification économique, d'autonomisation des communautés locales et de préservation du patrimoine conformément au programme «Vision 2030» du Royaume d'Arabie Saoudite.

Le programme de résidence d'artistes d’AlUla a été fondé en 2021 dans le cadre d'une collaboration entre RCU et Afalula. Son objectif était de rassembler des artistes d'horizons, de techniques et de médiums divers et de les inviter à s'immerger dans la riche culture, l'histoire et la communauté d'AlUla. Pour cette dernière édition de la saison 2022/2023 qui s'est déroulée du 14 mai au 14 juin 2023, RCU et Afalula avaient sélectionné deux artistes Hashel Al Lamki et Qamar Abdulmalik et une conservatrice and sustainable environment management while preserving the area’s natural and historic heritage. This encompasses a broad range of initiatives across archaeology, tourism, culture, education, and the arts, reflecting a commitment to meeting the economic diversification, local community empowerment, and heritage preservation priorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s «Vision» 2030 program. The AlUla Artist Residency Programme was founded in 2021 as collaboration between RCU and Afalula. Its aim was to bring together artists with diverse backgrounds, techniques and mediums and invite them to immerse themselves in the rich culture, history and community of AlUla. For this last edition of the 2022/2023 season, which took place from 14th May until 14th June 2023, RCU and Afalula have selected two artists Hashel Al Lamki and Qamar Abdulmalik and a curator Maryam Bilal, from a wider group of applicants.

Hashel Al Lamki est un artiste polyvalent des Émirats Arabes Unis. Son art plonge dans la relation complexe entre l'humanité et l'environnement.

Né à l'ombre de la montagne monumentale du Jebel Hafeet à Al Ain, Al Lamki a témoigné de la dynamique sociale et spatiale complexe qui a suivi le développement exponentiel du Golfe.

Ses peintures et ses œuvres sculpturales s'intéressent à l'héritage des paysages qui l'entouraient à Al Ain et au-delà. L'approche d'Al Lamki suit la suggestion d'Edward T. Hall selon laquelle la relation entre l'homme et la dimension culturelle est dialogique et «dans laquelle l'homme et son environnement participent à se façonner mutuellement». Il refuse la séparation de l'homme et de la nature, sa pratique souligne la dépendance de l'humanité aux ressources naturelles et sa responsabilité ultérieure dans la catastrophe environnementale qui se profile.

Qamar Abdulmalik, artiste aux multiples talents d'origine palestinienne, utilise diverses formes d'art telles que le collage, l'art vidéo et les nouveaux médias pour créer des installations qui suscitent la réflexion. S'inspirant de ses expériences personnelles en tant que réfugiée palestinienne, elle met en lumière les luttes des diasporas arabes affectées par les systèmes mondiaux et la vie quotidienne des immigrés sans papiers.

Hashel Al Lamki is an Emirati multidisciplinary artist. His art unpacks the relationship between humankind and their habitat. Born in the shadow of the monumental Jebel Hafeet Mountain in Al Ain, Al Lamki bore witness to the complex social and spatial dynamics that followed exponential development in the Gulf. His paintings and sculptural works are concerned with the legacies of the landscapes that surrounded him in Al Ain and beyond.

Al Lamki’s approach follows Edward T. Hall’s suggestion that the relationship between man and the cultural dimension is dialogical and “one in which both man and his environment participate in moulding each other”. He refuses the separation of man and nature, his practice underscores the dependency of mankind on natural resources and their subsequent responsibility for the environmental catastrophe that looms.

Maryam Bilal est une conservatrice saoudienne indépendante qui travaille en étroite collaboration avec des institutions et des artistes contemporains saoudiens. Elle a participé à la première exposition Create & Inspire à Djeddah, et a ensuite soutenu le développement d'œuvres d'art exposées dans le bureau du maire dans le cadre du Shubak Festival à Londres. Elle a ensuite travaillé avec les artistes comme conservatrice à l'ATHR, dirigeant plusieurs expositions de premier plan, notamment: And The Clocks Were Striking Thirteen, Letters, 18 Blankets, Wish you Were Here et Children of Yam. Elle a également soutenu des artistes en les représentant à Artissima Turin, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Berlin Contemporary, Art Dubai et Abu Dhabi Art.

Qamar Abdulmalik is a Palestinian graphic designer and interdisciplinary artist based in Riyadh. Using collage, video art, and new media, Qamar creates installations that draw from her personal experiences as a Palestinian refugee, the global systems that impact the Arab diasporas, and brings focus to the seemingly mundane day-to-day happenings that are prominent struggles in the lives of undocumented immigrants.

Maryam Bilal is a Saudi independent curator who has worked closely with Saudi contemporary artists and institutions. She was involved in the first Create & Inspire exhibition in Jeddah, and subsequently supported the development of artwork displayed in the mayor’s office as part of the Shubak Festival in London. She later worked as a curator at ATHR; leading several prominent exhibitions including: And The Clocks Were Striking Thirteen, Letters, 18 Blankets, Wish you Were Here and Children of Yam. She has also supported and represented artists at Artissima Torino, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Berlin Contemporary, Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art.
