ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915, in New York City, to his Jewish parents, Isidore and Augusta Miller. He has an older brother, Kermit and a younger sister, Joan. Arthur lived a comfortable middle class life until age fourteen when the Great Depression struck and his family’s business failed. Both Arthur and Kermit had to take jobs and the family lost their house and had to move to Brooklyn to be near relatives. In high school, quite like Biff Loman, Arthur was more actively involved in football and other sports than in his studies. After several rejected applications, Miller was finally admitted to the University of Michigan in 1934, where he studied journalism, economics, and history. It was in college that Miller began to study how society functioned and changed and impacted the lives of individuals. Miller was attracted to the ideals of socialism — especially its concern for the rights and the dignity of the common person. It was also in college that Miller discovered his love for playwriting and in his junior year, he won $250 in a college playwriting contest. Miller graduated from college in 1938 with a degree in English. In 1940 Miller married his college sweetheart, Mary Slattery. His plays include The Man Who Had All The Luck (1944), All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), and many others. He was awarded the Avery Hopwood Award for Playwriting at University of Michigan in 1936. He twice won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, received two Emmy awards and three Tony Awards for his plays, as well as a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. He received honorary degrees from Oxford University and Harvard University and was awarded the Prix Moliere of the French theatre, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Nicotine free herbal cigarettes are used in this production. Death of a Salesman is performed with one intermission. Out of respect for the audience and the artists, patrons who leave the theatre during the performance and patrons who arrive late will be re-admitted at House Manager’s discretion. The photographing, video and/or audio recording of this performance by any means whatsoever is strictly prohibited.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN DANIEL COOKSLEY (Happy Loman) is excited to be a part of Mad Cow’s first season in its new home. He was in Carol Churchill’s A Number many moons ago, in the old space. Some favorite productions around town include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Happy Birthday Wanda June, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Take Me Out, The Seafarer, Psycho Beach Party and too many more to mention. In the daytime he can be found wandering around backstage looking for something to do. Thanks go out to everyone I know because I’m sure you have done something for me. And of course Mr. Arthur Miller for writing such an amazing piece. BECKY ECK (The Woman) is excited to be back on stage at Mad Cow, having most recently appeared as Costanza in Enchanted April. She graduated with a BA in Theatre from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and, upon graduation, toured nationally with the Eckerd Theatre Company based out of Clearwater, FL, for four years. Some Orlando credits include Noises Off, Moonlight and Magnolias, Charlotte’s Web, A Christmas Story, The Giver, Anne Frank and Me, and Tomato Plant Girl.
Becky landed the role of a lifetime last September when she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Lula, with whom she is obsessed. Just ask to see a picture and she will show you a gazillion. She sends love to her husband, Tim, for making her life wonderful! WILLIAM ELLIOT (Scenic Designer) has designed scenery and lighting for over 200 productions during his career and many of them in the Central Florida area. They include operas at Stetson University’s School of Music and plays and musicals at Stetson’s Theatre Arts program. He designed many productions for the Civic Theatres and Orlando Opera Company. Some of his credits with Mad Cow Theatre include Fool for Love, Blithe Spirit, Desdemona, Burn This, The Glass Menagerie, The Cherry Orchard, Crimes of the Heart, The Odd Couple, The Laramie Project, Ghosts (scenery and lighting), The Life of Galileo, Stop Kiss, The Butter and Egg Man, Legacy of Light, Next to Normal and The Understudy. He has designed not only for theatre and opera, but television, film, corporate productions and theme parks.
