Pygmalion premiered at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna on 16 October 1913, in a German translation by Shaw’s Viennese literary agent and acolyte, Siegfried Trebitsch. Its first New York production opened on 24 March 1914 at the German-language Irving Place Theatre. It opened in London on 11 April 1914, at Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree’s His Majesty’s Theatre and starred Mrs. Campbell as Eliza and Tree as Higgins, running for 118 performances.

and You Never Can Tell). The plays were filled with what would become Shaw’s signature wit, accompanied by healthy doses of social criticism, which stemmed from his Fabian Society leanings. These plays would not go on to be his best remembered, or those for which he had high regard, but they laid the groundwork for the oversized career to come.

Toward the end of the 19th century, beginning with Caesar and Cleopatra (written in 1898). In 1903, Shaw wrote Man and Superman, whose third act, “Don Juan in Hell,” achieved a status larger than the play itself and is often staged as a separate play entirely.

While Shaw would write plays for the next 50 years, the plays written in the 20 years after Man and Superman would become foundational plays in his oeuvre. Works such as Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor’s Dilemma (1906), Pygmalion (1912), Androcles and the Lion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923) all firmly established Shaw as a leading dramatist of his time. In 1925, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

was born July 26, 1856, in Dublin, Ireland. In 1876 he moved to London, where he wrote regularly but struggled financially. In 1895, he became a theater critic for the Saturday Review and began writing plays of his own. His play Pygmalion was later made into a film twice, and the screenplay he wrote for the first version of it won an Oscar. During his lifetime, he wrote more than 60 plays and won many awards, among them the Nobel Prize. Shaw’s early education took the form of tutoring sessions provided by his clerical uncle. Shaw landed some writing work in the form of book reviews and art, music and theater criticism, and in 1895 he was brought aboard the Saturday Review as its theater critic.

It was at this point that Shaw began writing plays of his own. Shaw’s first plays were published in volumes titled “Plays Unpleasant” (containing Widowers’ Houses, The Philanderer and Mrs. Warren’s Profession) and “Plays Pleasant” (which had Arms and the Man, Candida, The Man of Destiny

Pygmalion BOBBIE BELL (Alfred Doolittle) is delighted to be reprising the role of Doolittle for a second time having previously performed it in My Fair Lady 44 years ago. Acting credits at Mad Cow include Mr. Kirby in You Can’t Take It with You, Father Jack in Dancing at Lughnasa, Old Actor in The Fantasticks, and 22 characters including the title role in Macbeth.

He also performed with Orlando Ballet as Sancho Panza in Don Quixote and Doctor Coppelius in Coppélia.

He directed the following plays for the herd: The Brothers Size, Clybourne Park, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, August: Osage County, The Pitmen Painters, The Year of Magical Thinking, The Caretaker, and A Delicate Balance. He twice won the Florida Playwrights Competition for his plays Pascua De Flores and Of: A Play of Artemis.

Lisa studied painting at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and Cobalt Studios in White Lake, NY. She has won numerous awards for her painting and has written how-to-paint articles for North Light Publications.

MICHAEL CARR (Freddy Eynsford-Hill) is thrilled to making his Mad Cow debut in Pygmalion. He studied theatre at UMass Amherst and improvisation at the famed iO Theater in Chicago.

Most recently, he directed the Orlando Fringe hit 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche which returns in January to the Orlando Winter Fringe (cheap plug!).

He also co-wrote/directed the award winning Robyn da Hood: A Rap Musical at Fringe 2015. Favorite roles include GW (Sordid Lives), Phantom Cat (Dumpster CATS), Boy (Smooch), Gaston (Picasso at the Lapin Agile). He appears at local theme parks and SAK Comedy Lab, where he serves as Artistic Director. Special thanks to that girl from Smooch.

Joe Bivens (Sound Design) is an audio designer and sound engineer with more than 20 years of experience mixing in both live and studio environments. His work spans a variety of media from recorded studio albums to live concerts and theatrical performances. Joe currently works with multiple venues including Mad Cow Theatre and The Walt Disney Company.

KARL LENGEL (Henry Higgins) is honored to make his debut in the Mad Cow herd and especially to bring breath to Shaw’s eloquence. A veteran on stages from New Orleans to New York, Karl’s favorite roles over the decades include Drummond in Inherit the Wind, Creon in Anouilh’s Antigone, Oscar Wilde in Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, Ferdinand in Love’s Labors Lost, Edmund in King Lear, and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. Karl is proud to be a member of Actors’ Equity Association and, when not reviewing his lines, spends his free time with Grammy Ann and their lovely granddaughters Mia and Hannah. Favorite Shaw quote: “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

AMY HADLEY (Lighting Designer) Amy Hadley is a professional lighting designer who works with many of the local theaters throughout Central Florida and she also serves as staff LD for Beth Marshall Presents. This will be her third production with Mad Cow Theatre.

She had the privilege of being part of the creative team for The Big Meal and 1776. When she is not working as a lighting designer, she serves as the technical director for the Orlando Fringe Festival.

J BARRY LEWIS (Director) is pleased to be returning to Mad Cow Theatre where he last staged the critically acclaimed production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? His work continues to be seen at theatres across South Florida. For the Maltz Jupiter Theatre: Barefoot in the Park, Deathtrap, Doubt, Dial M for Murder, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Frost/Nixon. MARK LAINER (Colonel Pickering) is pleased to be working with Mad Cow, where he won The Daily City’s Best Actor Award for his performance as Oliver in The Pitmen Painters. He has also worked at Orlando Shakes and Florida Rep. He improvised in NYC before coming to Florida to be part of the first improv troupe at Pleasure Island’s Comedy Warehouse. He

Favorite productions include leading roles in The Big Meal (Mad Cow Theatre), Harvey, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Collected Stories, Arsenic and Old Lace, and numerous Ayckbourn plays. She thanks Mitzi and company for kindness, encouragement, and opportunity; her husband Daniel who models courage every day; and her HHN/Universal Orlando co-workers for their support. Once a New Yorker, Shami is now Orlando Strong.

Served as Artistic Director of the Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company, North Conway, New Hampshire; Festival and Production Coordinator of the American College Theatre Festival, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.; Associate Artistic Director, Florida Stage, Manalapan, FL; and currently the Resident Director of Palm Beach Dramaworks. A leader in theatre education, he served as Director of Education at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. He is a recently was honored with the Florida Professional Theatre Association Richard Fallon Award for Excellence in Theatre as well as the Silver Palm Award for Directing in South Florida. During his thirty-year career in the theatre, he has staged nearly 200 productions.

MARYLIN McGINNIS (Mrs. Eynsford-Hill) played 3 roles in the Central Florida premiere of Women Playing Hamlet.

JULIANNE SNYDER (Clara Eynsford-Hill) was last seen at Mad Cow Theatre as Cathleen in Long Day’s Journey into Night. Favorite roles include Claire (Flight of the Earls), Berdine (Psycho Beach Party), Girl (Smooch), and Daisy (Biloxi Blues). Julie holds degrees in theatre and history from the College of William & Mary. When not onstage, Julie can be found entertaining the masses at Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World.
