MAD COW THEATRE Season 17
Welcome to Our 17 th Season! Dear Friends, Season 17 is underway and we couldn’t be more excited by the diverse productions we have brought together for the Central Florida community to enjoy. This season we start our journey with several new playwrights to the Mad Cow stage. Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities and the enchantingly romantic musical The Light in the Piazza by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel. Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners is an award-winning comedy ready to make you laugh, Maggie the cat purrs, meows, and hisses for us in Tennessee Williams’ s classic Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The History Boys by Alan Bennett gives us a smart and funny look at private school education, and don’t forget to “let the sunshine in” with the rock musical Hair by James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot. As you know, Mad Cow loves to explore new territory with our audiences in our intimate Black Box Theatre and this season we continue the tradition with the seductive Venus in Fur by David Ives, and the power struggles of truth and politics in The Letters by John W. Lowell. New playwright Katori Hall brings us a gripping re-imagining of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last night on earth in the 2010 Olivier Award winner for Best New Play, The Mountaintop; and Cock by Mike Bartlett takes a familiar story of love gone astray and it turns it on its head when a gay man struggles with his feelings for a woman. This season will also see the return of the 12th Orlando Cabaret Festival in April 2014 featuring more of today’s hottest cabaret artists from around the country. And for the first time ever we will be hosting the Mad Cow Theatre Science Play Festival in January 2014! Make sure you don’t miss a moment of this incredible season and become a subscriber today with the form located on page 16 of this brochure. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call the box office at 407.297.8788 where one of our helpful box office assistants will be happy to assist you. Cheers to Season 17!

MAD COW THEATRE Other Desert Cities SEP 27-Oct 27, 2013 by Jon Robin Baitz — It’s Christmas Eve in Palm Springs when Brooke presents her Reagan-adjacent parents with a tell-all confessional novel that turbo-charges the holidays and the Wyeth family dynamic with ever-shifting alliances and politics. Pulitzer Prize-finalist Jon Robin Baitz’s smart new play of high drama, serious laughter and repartee that dazzles and decimates was one of the hottest tickets on Broadway last season. “The most richly enjoyable new play for grown-ups in many a season.” – The New York Times — in The Harriett
The Light in the Piazza DEC 6, 2013-JAN 5, 2014 book by Craig Lucas and music | lyrics by Adam Guettel — Set in Florence and Rome in 1953, The Light in the Piazza is the story of a young American tourist traveling with her mother who meets and falls for a young Italian. The mother opposes the affair for reasons that only gradually become apparent as the musical unfolds. Music and lyrics are by Adam Guettel, the grandson of Richard Rodgers. The intricately classic score is the perfect complement to an Italian love story and is sure to be audience favorite. Based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazza won six Tony Awards in 2005 and is perhaps the most celebrated score of the past decade. — in The Harriett Mad Cow Theatre 17th Season 7

by Alan Ayckbourn — Table Manners, Alan Ayckbourn’s award-winning comedy, follows the intertwining lives of a group of siblings and their significant others during a weekend in the country. This sidesplitting farce explodes with lust, hysterics, and exasperation as three couples share a weekend in search of love, sex, and the meaning of marriage. A comic feast where chairs and food are scarce, but laughs are served a plenty“… crippling you with laughter that shakes the body and more subversively, fractures the soul.” – The New York Times — in The Harriett

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Mar 21-Apr 20, 2014
by Tennessee Williams — In the course of one sultry evening, a prominent Southern dynasty is pushed to the brink when tender memories are relived and life altering secrets are revealed. It’s the 65th birthday of wealthy Southern plantation owner Big Daddy and his family has gathered to celebrate. As one son Brick, a hunky former football hero, mysteriously retreats from his desirable but sexually frustrated wife Maggie, his money hungry brother and sister-in-law plot to secure more than their share of the family fortune. Don’t miss this Pulitzer Prizewinning gem by Tennessee Williams, one of the greatest playwrights in American history. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is an emotionally intense drama that sizzles with passion and greed like you’ve never experienced before. — in The Harriett

Season 17
MAD COW THEATRE Hair
Jun 6-JUL 6, 2014
THE MUSICAL
lyrics by James Rado & Gerome Ragni | music by Galt MacDermot — Hair is an electric celebration on stage. This exuberant musical about a group of young Americans searching for peace and love in a turbulent time has struck a resonant chord with audiences young and old. Featuring an extraordinary cast and unforgettable songs, including Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In, Good Morning Starshine and Easy To Be Hard, its relevance is undeniable and its energy is unbridled. “The ultimate American rock musical!” — The New York Times — in The Harriett
The History Boys Aug 8-SEP 7, 2014 by Alan Bennett — Alan Bennett’s brilliantly witty, perceptive tale of an unruly handful of senior schoolboys, preparing for coveted places at either Oxford or Cambridge under the tutelage of their somewhat “old-school” history teacher. An unusual approach to their studies is questioned when a new, young, history teacher joins the staff with strong views of his own. The History Boys is a compelling exploration of both the anarchy of adolescence and the very purpose of education itself, but it’s also a wonderful feel-good evening, shot through with Alan Bennett’s masterful wit and abundant humanity – quite simply a must-see. — in The Harriett

by David Ives — The sexiest, funniest, most acclaimed hit of the recent Broadway season, this seductive comedy blends love, lust, and literature, with the ultimate battle of the sexes. Vanda is an unusual young actress who arrives to audition for the leadin playwright Thomas’ adaptation of the erotic novel, Venus in Fur. During the reading, realities begin to shift and Thomas finds himself heading into dangerous territory. Does art imitate life? Or is it the other way around? Written by comic mastermind David Ives, this sizzling new play will keep you guessing until the very end. — in The Black Box
MAD COW THEATRE
SeasonThe 17 Mountaintop FEB 14-MAR 16, 2014
by Katori Hall — Memphis – April 3, 1968. A gripping re-imagining of the events taking place the night before the assassination of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After delivering his magnificent and memorable “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, an exhausted and defeated Dr. King retires to Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel where he encounters a mysterious and spirited stranger as an epic storm rages outside. Playwright Katori Hall won the 2010 Olivier Award for this new play hailed as “soul-stirring and eye-opening” – The Daily News. — in The Black Box
Cock
Jun 20-Jul 20, 2014 by Mike Bartlett — Cock is the complex story of what happens to John when he takes a break from the troubled relationship he has with his boyfriend. During this “break” he meets a woman who turns out to be more than just the best friend a gay man could hope for. Riddled with guilt and paralyzed with fear, John decides to straighten it all out once and for all. Cock is a playful, candid look at one man’s sexuality and the difficulties that arise when surprising new choices challenge the status quo. — in The Black Box
The Letters
AUG 22-SEP 21, 2014 by John W. Lowell — When Anna is called in for a meeting with her superior, everything seems to be going well. But nothing is quite as it seems in this thriller of politics and disinformation set in 1930’s Russia. An informal interview quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse in which the roles of hunter and hunted shift without warning, and being the last to flinch may mean the difference between life and death. Who will claim the upper hand: those who suppress the truth, or those who will risk everything to liberate it? — in The Black Box
