Meet the Playwright

August Wilson

August Wilson (playwright) was born Frederick August Kittel in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 27, 1945. His mother, Daisy Wilson, was AfricanAmerican and his father was a German immigrant, Frederick Kittel.

As a child, Kittel attended St. Richard’s Parochial School. When his parents divorced, he, his mother and his siblings moved from the poor Bedford Avenue area of Pittsburgh to the mostly white neighborhood of Oakland. After facing the relentless bigotry of his classmates at Central Catholic High School, he transferred to Connelly Vocational High School and later to Gladstone High School. When he was 15, Wilson pursued an independent education at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which later awarded him an honorary high school diploma.

Following his father’s death in 1965, a 20-year-old Frederick Kittel adopted the pen name “August Wilson”— reportedly an homage to his mother — and declared himself a poet. In 1968, Wilson,

co-founded the Black Horizon Theater.

The following year, Wilson married Brenda Burton. They divorced two years later.

August Wilson wrote his first notable play in 1979, Jitney, for which he earned a fellowship at the Minneapolis Playwright Center.

In 1981, Wilson married Judy Oliver.

The following year, his new play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, was accepted at the Eugene O’Neill Playwright’s Conference. The next year, Wilson had his introduction to Lloyd Richards, who went on to direct Wilson’s first six Broadway plays.

Wilson’s play Fences, for which he won his first Pulitzer Prize as well as a Tony Award, premiered on Broadway in 1987.

He took home another Pulitzer Prize in 1990, this time for The Piano Lesson, following its Broadway premiere.

A collection of Wilson’s work, entitled Three Plays by August Wilson, was published in 1991. The following year brought the Broadway premiere of Two Trains Running.

In 1994, Wilson was married for the third time, to Constanza Romero. Seven Guitars made its way to the Broadway stage two years later.

King Hedley II made its Broadway debut in 2001, and Gem of the Ocean premiered in Chicago roughly a year later. In 2003, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was revived on Broadway. Gem of the Ocean premiered on Broadway in 2004.

August Wilson died of liver cancer on October 2, 2005, in Seattle, Wash. His new play, Radio Golf, had opened in Los Angeles, Calf., just a few months earlier.

Lisa studied painting at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and Cobalt Studios.

She has won numerous awards for her painting and has written how-to-paint articles for North Light Publications.

JIM BRASWELL (Gabriel) returns to Mad Cow Theatre after appearing in The Brothers Size and Yellowman.

Recent stage credits: The awardwinning portrayal of Jupiter Evans in Jefferson and Jupiter and Oberon/ Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On television, he was seen most recently in the film Killing Reagan. Jim is widely known to Walt Disney World audiences for The American Idol Experience, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire; Play It, and Festival of the Lion King.

KARL LENGEL (Stage Manager) is ecstatic to return to Mad Cow, where He has worked as a performer, manager, director, administrator, and teacher nationwide, including as a stage manager for Mad Cow’s recent productions of Animal Crackers, 1776, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile; on Broadway productions of Miss Saigon and Minnelli on Minnelli; on national tours of Les Miserables, Cats, Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,and Annie; and in regional productions.”

SHERYL CARBONELL (Rose Maxson) is thrilled to return to Mad Cow after appearing as Rheba in You Can’t Take it With You and one of the Stepp Sisters in Dreamgirls. Sheryl earned a master’s in music education from the University of Central Florida. Recent theatre credits: Calpurnia in To Kill a Mockingbird at Orlando Shakespeare Theater and Mama Nadi in Ruined at Valencia College Theater. Thanks to her teachers for introducing her to

PATRIC ROBINSON (Jim Bono) is pleased to be making his Mad Cow Theatre debut. Robinson is celebrating more than 35 years in this business. He has performed at Alhambra Dinner Theatre (Jacksonville), Florida Repertory Theatre (Fort Myers), and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (Sarasota), among others. A few of his most notable characters are Walter Lee (A Raisin in the Sun), Wining Boy (The Piano Lesson), Leroy (The Bad Seed), and Pseudolus (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum).

Trinity (Tri) Onigbanjo (Raynell) is excited to start her acting career at Mad Cow Theatre. She began acting lessons at the age of five, and is currently enrolled at the Lisa Maile Acting school for acting and modeling. Tri has been a featured model in the Macy’s mall fashion show. She is currently in the second grade at St. Luke’s Lutheran School. Her hobbies include reading, acting, modeling, tennis, and horseback riding.

TONY SIMOTES (Director) This happy to return to Mad Cow after directing Painting Churches, The God Game, and Constellations. Tony is the former artistic director of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass., which he helped found in 1978, and is also an actor, director, and master teacher of fight and movement. Director at S&Co.: The Tempest and Mother Courage and Her Children with Olympia Dukakis, As You Like It, Othello, The Merry Wives of Windsor, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and many others. He sends thanks to Mitzi and love to his gal Lucy.

DAMANY RILEY (Lyons Maxson) is elated to return to Mad Cow Theatre. Previous credits in the pasture include Everyman (title role), Romeo and Juliet (Prince), and Dreamgirls (Ensemble). Other credits include The Life (Fleetwood) at Breakthrough Theatre, Les Miserables (Ensemble) at Orlando Shakespeare Theater and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck) at Connecticut Free Shakespeare.

Damany studied musical theatre at Catawba College in North Carolina.

He would like to express a great deal of gratitude to Grandma, Dad and Mo for their continued love and support.

STELSON TELFORT (Cory Maxson) made his Mad Cow debut in The Brothers Size. A native of Orlando, he is pursuing a BFA in acting at the University of Central Florida.

Stelson’s other credits include Fortune in Ruined, Himself in Division: The Trayvon/Jordan Project, and Big Daddy Brubeck in Sweet Charity (all at Valencia College) and

A two to nine-week commitment is all it takes to become friends with an artist who might be the next Lin-Manuel Miranda or Audra McDonald.

Artists require a private bedroom and bathroom, but kitchen facilities can be shared.
