Meet the Playwrights George Simon Kaufman (1889–1961) was an American playwright, theatre director and producer, humorist, and George S. drama critic. Kaufman In addition to comedies and political satire, he wrote several musicals, notably for the Marx Brothers. One play and one musical that he wrote won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama: You Can’t Take It with You (1937, with Moss Hart), and Of Thee I Sing (1932, with Morrie Ryskind and Ira Gershwin). Kaufman’s Broadway debut was September 4, 1918 at the Knickerbocker Theatre, with the premiere of the melodrama Someone in the House. He coauthored the play with Walter C. Percival. In every Broadway season from 1921 through 1958, there was a play written or directed by Kaufman. Kaufman wrote only one play alone, The Butter and Egg Man in 1925. With Edna Ferber he wrote The Royal Family, Dinner at Eight, and Stage Door. Kaufman wrote some of the American theatre’s most enduring comedies” with Moss Hart. Their work includes Once in a Lifetime, Merrily We Roll Along, The Man Who Came to Dinner and You Can’t Take It with You. Kaufman collaborated on many musical theatre projects, including two Broadway shows crafted for the Marx Brothers: The Cocoanuts, written by Irving Berlin, and Animal Crackers, written with Morrie Ryskind, Bert Kalmar, and Harry Ruby.

Edna Ferber (1885–1968) was an American novelist, short story writer and playwright. Her novels included the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big (1924), Show Boat (1926, made into the celebrated 1927 musical), Cimarron (1929, made into the 1931 film, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture), Giant (1952, made into the 1956 Hollywood movie) and Ice Palace (1958, filmed in 1960). Ferber’s novels generally featured strong female protagonists, along with a rich and diverse collection of supporting characters. She usually highlighted at least one strong secondary character who faced discrimination ethnically or for other reasons; through this technique, Ferber demonstrated her belief that people are people and that the not-sopretty people have the best character. Ferber was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of wits who met for lunch every day at the Algonquin Hotel in New York. Ferber collaborated with Round Table member George S. Kaufman on several plays presented on Broadway, including The Royal Family (1927), Dinner At Eight (1932), Stage Door (1936), and Bravo! (1948).[3] Ferber died at her home in New York City, of stomach cancer, at the age of 82.
