Mad Cow Theatre Mad Cow Theatre was founded on the belief that the theatre is a dynamic and powerful means of social understanding, as well as a hugely entertaining art form. Through the combination of passionate, skillful acting and compelling, insightful writing, nurtured by an attentive and everchanging process, Mad Cow presents entertaining works of theatre to an ever-widening audience — promoting, enhancing, and celebrating the human condition through art. Mad Cow Theatre is supported in part with public funds from the State of Florida, Department of State,

Division of Cultural Affairs; the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; the Florida Arts Council; the National Endowment for the Arts, the Downtown Development Board; and Orange County through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program and United Arts of Central Florida, home of Orlandoatplay.com and UAArtsEd.com. A great nation deserves great art! Mad Cow is a 501(c)(3) organization and welcomes all donations including funds, materials, time, and goodwill. We are especially delighted when audience members bring others to share the theatrical experience.

Meet the Playwright

David Hare

DAVID HAIR (playwright) Born in June of 1947 in a small seaside town in Sussex, David Hare’s work spans over four decades. Celebrated on both stage and screen, Hare’s dramas have been performed by the likes of Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Kate Winslet. It may be hard to believe but David Hare insists that he was not always a playwright with a political point of view. In his memoir The Blue Touch Paper, Hare says “fundamentally, I had no control” over what he was writing — that he had been explaining the what was happening in the world around him. Though he later admits in an interview with The Telegraph that he did eventually “develop an agenda” and that he did “acquire some politics.” Many, if not all, of his pieces

are innately political though. At first glance, Skylight is a tragic romance. A tale of two lovers who can never be- despite their desire to forge a future together. And it is, but it is also a portrait of a country torn apart by political ideology. When the play premiered, Thatcherism had slashed through Great Britain and the rest of the world. Set today, the same can be said about Brexit, bitter tension between the right and the left, and the rise of Donald Trump. The parallels are uncanny. Skylight recently enjoyed a revival in 2015 at the John Goldman Theatre starring Carey Mulligan as Kyra Hollis, Bill Nighy as Tom Sergeant, and Matthew Beard as Edward- Tom’s teenage son whose presence bookends Kyra and Tom’s night together.
