You Can’t Take It With You MOSS HART (Playwright) was an award-winning playwright and screenwriter known for works like Once in a Lifetime, You Can’t Take It With You and A Star Is Born. Born in New York City on October 24, 1904, in a working class/immigrant neighborhood on the Upper East Side, he was introduced to the power of storytelling and theater at an early age. Hart left school as a teen to bring in income for his family and eventually became a recreations director in the Catskills, turning to acting as well. Hart made it big on the stage by writing comedic plays. He co-wrote 1930’s Once in a Lifetime with George S. Kaufman, and the two went on to successfully work together on a number of projects, including 1934’s Merrily We Roll Along and 1936’s You Can’t Take It With You; the latter depicted a zany family culture clash and won the Pulitzer Prize. Hart was also a stage director and film screenwriter, having penned Judy Garland’s A Star Is Born. He died on December 20, 1961. GEORGE S. KAUFMAN (Playwright) was co-author of a number of Broadway hits. He received the Pulitzer Prize for two of his productions. Kaufman was also a noted director. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 16, 1889, Kaufman co-wrote Stage Door (1936) and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939). Two of his collaboratively written works, Of Thee I Sing (1931) and You Can’t Take It With You (1936), won Pulitzer Prizes. Landing a job as a humor columnist, he next found work as a theater critic and was hired by The New York Times in 1917. While still a critic, Kaufman embarked upon a career as a playwright and librettist. He co-wrote Dulcy, with Marc Connelly, in 1921. Kaufman created one play, The Butter and Egg Man (1925), on his own, but spent the rest of his career with collaborators, the working method he liked best. Kaufman was also a Tony Award-winning director. At age 71, he died in New York City on June 2, 1961.

Out of respect for the audience and the artists, patrons who leave the theatre during the performance and patrons who arrive late will be re-admitted at the house manager’s discretion. The photographing, video and/or audio recording of this performance by any means whatsoever is strictly prohibited.
