WELCOME Madeira Island Magazine dá as boas-vindas ao Jardim do Atlântico.

A Festa da Flor vai decorrer, excecionalmente este ano, no mês de outubro, entre os dias 1 e 24 de outubro.

O evento é uma homenagem à Primavera e às flores, destacando as tradições madeirenses, como as actuações de grupos folclóricos, a construção dos magníficos tapetes florais e vários concertos musicais.

Honramos as flores, que simbolizam o desejo de paz e amor. Anualmente, as crianças colocam flores frescas no chamado “Muro da Esperança”.

Destacamos o “Mercado da Flores” e os “Sabores Regionais” que pode visitar na Placa Central da Av. Arriaga, assim como a “Exposição da Flor” que ocorre na cidade do Funchal.

As flores da Madeira são sempre procuradas por quem nos visita e servem de recordação da nossa Ilha, chegando aos quatro cantos do Mundo.

Madeira Flower Festival 2021 will happen, exceptionally this year, in October, between the 1st and 24th of October.

The event is a tribute to Spring and flowers, highlighting Madeiran traditions, such as the performances of folklore groups, construction of magnificent floral carpets and various

musical concerts. We honour flowers, which symbolize the wish for peace and love. Yearly, pure hands of children place fresh flowers in a Wall of Hope.

Madeira flowers are evermore in demand and are travelling home with tourists all twelve months of the year to all parts of the world.

By leaning over one of our many Madeira viewpoints, or belvederes, along the coast one can expect to lose sight of the horizon as the eye stretches out over this genuine “Floating Garden” namely, Madeira Island.

Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade Caniçal 12 - 13 setembro 12 - 13 september

onsiderada uma das mais antigas capelas da Ilha da Madeira, foi construída no século XVIII por pescadores que, reza a lenda, ao verem o seu navio prestes a embater nas rochas, prometeram edificar no cume do monte um pequeno templo dedicado à santidade que os salvou.

O certame realizado é único e dele faz parte um ritual peculiar devido à sua história: é realizada uma procissão de barco, onde os peregrinos deslocam-se para repor a imagem na capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

One of the oldest chapels on Madeira Island. It was built in the 18th century by fishermen that saw their ship about to hit the rocks, promised to build on the top of the hill a small temple dedicated to the sanctity that saved them.

The religious celebration is unique and includes a peculiar ritual due to its history. There is a boat procession, where people move to put the image in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

Chapel of Senhor dos Milagres Machico 8-9 outubro 8-9 october onta a história que esta celebração homenageia a aluvião ocorrida no dia 9 de outubro de 1803. Esta destruiu a capela onde estava disposta a estátua do Senhor dos Milagres, arrastada para o mar. Três dias depois foi entregue à Sé Catedral do Funchal e posteriormente regressa à capela em Machico, em 1813.

radition has it that this festival originated after the alluvium of 1803. On this date, the then called Chapel of Mercy was completely destroyed, having its crucifix swept off to sea.

It has been told that an American Galley found this effigy and took it to Funchal where it remained there until April 15th, 1813. On this day it was brought, in procession and by the light of torches, back to Machico, and affixed to the reconstructed chapel which has, since then, been called the Chapel of our Lord of Miracles.

As for the return of the effigy to Machico tradition has it that the ceremony was a very emotional one and was accompanied by mostly fishermen and their family members.

From this date on a great devotion has been confided onto Our Lord of Miracles by the island’s seamen who celebrate such an occasion by paying homage to the statue.

This takes place in the month of October, more precisely during the 8th and 9th days of October, when by nocturnal procession the seamen take the effigy from the chapel to the mother-church. As was done when the effigy was returned, this procession also takes place by the light of torches and the candles lit by the numerous penitents present, as public illumination is shut down along the route to be taken.

On the 9th day, during a daylight procession, the crucifix is returned to the chapel, where it awaits yet another year to repeat the ritual.

freguesia do Santo da Serra, particularmente curiosa pela sua delimitação territorial, está dividida entre os concelhos de Machico e Santa Cruz.

A Sidra destaca-se entre as mais emblemáticas tradições da freguesia.

Esta remota aos inícios da colonização da Ilha, onde a produção se iniciou devido às muitas variedade de maçãs e peros que existiam, inicialmente trazidas pelos primeiros colonizadores e mais tarde expandidas pelos ingleses, entre os séculos XVI e XVIII. De modo a contribuir para a produção desta bebida tão típica, no dia 28 de janeiro de 2020, foi inaugurada a primeira sidraria na localidade, situada no Centro Cívico. Esta infraestrutura está capacitada para dar uma nova vida ao fabrico da sidra regional no que concerne ao seu engarrafamento e comercialização.

Como forma de retratar os produtores desta tradição, foi erguida uma peça escultória da autoria do artista José Batista, natural da freguesia, esculpida em pedra.

No Santo da Serra é recorrente no final do mês de setembro acontecer a “Mostra da Sidra”, um certame em homenagem a esta bebida.

Apple Cider stands out among the most emblematic products in Santo da Serra. Since the beginning of the colonization of the Island, the production began due to the many varieties of apples and pears that existed, initially brought by the first settlers and later expanded by the English, between the 16th and 18th centuries.

To help the production of this very typical drink, on January 28, 2020, the first cider factory was inaugurated in the locality, at the Centro Cívico of Santo da Serra. This infrastructure was able to breathe new life into the manufacture of regional cider in terms of bottling and marketing.

As a way to honour the producers of cider, a sculptural piece, carved in stone, was made by the local artist José Batista.

At the end of September, the “Mostra da Cidra” happens in Santo da Serra and is a recurrent event in honour of this typical drink.

The event involves farmers and producers of apples, pears and cider, as well as handcrafted demonstrations in live cider production, where apples are first introduced into a small wooden press where they are ground with a “mallet”, then placed in a traditional Madeiran mill, pressing the pulp to obtain the maximum extraction of juice, that can be sampled by visitors.

Festival que homenageia a recriação histórica da época em que Cristóvão Colombo residiu na Ilha dourada, desde o seu desembarque até à realização do mercado quinhentista.

ascido em 1451 (Génova), Cristóvão Colombo foi um navegador e explorador que viveu alguns anos no arquipélago da Madeira, após o casamento em 1479/1480 com Filipa de Moniz, filha de Bartolomeu Perestrelo, primeiro capitão donatário do Porto Santo.

Cristóvão Colombo, aportou à Madeira em ligação direta com os negócios do açúcar que por esses tempos se intensificavam.

Havia chegado a Lisboa em 1476, procurando integrar-se na colónia genovesa. Nesta década de 70 a produção açucareira da Madeira ascendia já às 20.000 arrobas, sendo intenso o comércio açucareiro. A permanência de Cristóvão Colombo na Madeira facultou-lhe dados importantes e essenciais para a sua formação náutica, sobre a navegação atlântica. Na época, decorriam a bom ritmo as descobertas e exploração portuguesas da costa ocidental africana.

No Porto Santo, uma tradição oral localiza a casa onde viveu Cristóvão Colombo no local onde hoje se encontra construído o Museu de Porto Santo. Mais do que a localização das casas onde viveu Cristóvão Colombo, o arquipélago da Madeira liga-se de forma insofismável à sua formação como navegador, e é essa a nossa maior contribuição para o descobrimento de um novo continente.

A primeira vez que Cristóvão Colombo veio até à ilha da Madeira foi em 1478 com o intuito de comprar 2400 arrobas de açúcar? O Ciclo do Açúcar foi um dos ciclos económicos mais emblemáticos na Madeira, atraindo inúmeros comerciantes que desejavam o “ouro branco”.

Columbus Festival Porto Santo

The Columbus Festival is based on a series of tourist entertainment initiatives that portray the time when this famous merchant resided on the island of Porto Santo. Come aboard and discover the richness of an amazing story!

Legend has it that the fleet was attacked by pirates off the coast of Portugal, where Columbus’s ship was sunk, but he swam to shore and took refuge in Lisbon. Settling there, where his brother Bartholomew Columbus was working as a cartographer, he was married in 1479 to the daughter of the governor of the island of Porto Santo. Diego Columbus, the only child of this marriage, was born in 1480.

during his travels, and by reading and studying charts and maps, Christopher concluded that the Earth was 25 per cent smaller than was previously thought and composed mostly of land. On the basis of these faulty beliefs, he decided that Asia could be reached quickly by sailing west. In 1484 he submitted his theories to John II, king of Portugal, petitioning him to finance a westward crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. His proposal was rejected by a royal maritime commission because of his miscalculations and because Portuguese ships were on the point of finding a sea route to Asia around Africa.

Did you know?

The first time that Christopher Columbus came to Madeira Island was in 1478 with the intention of buying 2400 pieces of sugar. The times of Sugar was one of the most emblematic and economic periods in Madeira when many traders were searching the nicknamed “white gold”.

Allegoric Parade Saturday – October 3nd

On the 3rd of October, Sunday afternoon, the streets of Funchal will be filled with music, colour and perfume with the magnificent parade of floats perfectly decorated with various floral species and many decorations. The Allegoric Parade is the event, taking place since 1979, that is most-awaited and that marks both visitors and residents of the island of Madeira.

Madeira Flower Festival Program “Wall of Hope” Saturday – October 2nd On the morning of October 2, there will be the Children’s Parade, where children, dressed for the event, will parade to Praça do Município to build a beautiful flower mural symbolically named “Wall of Hope”.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, the festival will have a Flower and Regional Flavours Market (Central Plate Av. Arriaga) where visitors and residents can get to know the various floral and decorative species that exist in Madeira. Regional flavours will also be present through the local gastronomy and typical drinks.

A Flower Exhibition will take place at Praça do Povo, where the most beautiful examples of flowers produced on the island can be appreciated and evaluated.

Floral Carpets and Decorations will be in display at Av. Arriaga central walkways. The construction of floral rugs is a tradition throughout the island. Its origin comes from religious processions.

The Flower Concerts October, 7th th to 9 , are four musical concerts that will be performed in different spaces of Madeira Island. The concerts will take place in a unique environment, with great musical quality in a setting of unique beauty in the world, and still surrounded by Madeiran flora.

Floral Installations will be present on Avenida Sá Carneiro, at the entrance to the Funchal Pier and next to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira on the last weekend of the festival, from October October, 21st to 24th.

The Madeira Flower Collection (October, 23rd and 24th) aims to promote the regional fashion sector.

It will feature the presence of several fashion designers and will take place at Pier 8 (Cais 8).

A escultura em pedra zimbabuense é considerada como arte simultaneamente moderna e com raízes em tradições locais. Esta forma de expressão artística possui neste país alguns precedentes históricos, sendo os mais conhecidos as figuras heráldicas de aves do Grande Zimbabué. Uma destas figuras é hoje o símbolo do Estado independente do Zimbabué. Não existe, todavia, ligação directa entre o actual movimento escultórico e quaisquer precedentes históricos, se bem que haja, sem dúvida, uma consciência nacional do significado destas aves e alguns escultores as tenham homenageado nas suas obras. A Colecção Berardo possui pelo menos dois exemplares, da autoria de Abel [NDORO] e de Kilala MALOLA, com uma notável semelhança com as aves

do Grande Zimbabué.

A exposição da escultura em pedra do Zimbabué da Colecção Berardo está organizada de acordo com duas abordagens diferentes. Na galeria inferior, o visitante poderá admirar as esculturas como se estivesse em Tengenenge. Na galeria superior, optou-se por uma apresentação mais consonante com as expectativas dos amantes da arte ocidentais, incidindo sobre artistas de renome, mulheres escultoras e peças que podem considerar-se obras-primas.

Zimbabwean stone sculpture has been claimed as both a modern art and an art with its roots in local traditions. There are historical precedents for stone sculpture in Zimbabwe, the most famous of which are the heraldic bird figures from Great Zimbabwe. One of these has actually become the emblem of the

independent state of Zimbabwe. There is, however, no direct link between the present sculpture movement and any historical precedents. There is of course a national awareness of these ancient birds and some sculptors have obviously paid homage to them. The Berardo Collection contains at least two examples, by Abel [NDORO] and Kilala MALOLA, that bear a striking resemblance to the birds of Great Zimbabwe.

The exhibition of the Berardo Collection of Zimbabwean stone sculpture has been arranged with two different approaches. In the lower gallery, the visitor will get an experience of the presentation of sculptures as it happens at Tengenenge. The upper gallery favours an approach that is nearer to the expectations of the Western art lover and will focus on signature artists, female artists and aboveaverage pieces.

início de Setembro/Outubro é a altura do ano em que as uvas estão a ser recolhidas por toda a ilha, uma tradição de vários anos que reconstitui os velhos hábitos da população, que remontam ao tempo de colonização da ilha.

No concelho de Câmara de Lobos, a uma distância de cerca de 12 km do Funchal, o festival começa com a apanha das uvas. O resto do ritual vinícola, nomeadamente o transporte das uvas, é apreciado tanto por moradores como turistas. No Funchal, existem uma variedade de atividades e espetáculos ligados à vinificação tradicional.

As vinhas foram introduzidas em 1425, sendo as primeiras castas da malvasia (Malmsey), importadas de Chipre, Creta e Itália, Sercial do Reno, Boal da Borgonha, Verdelho, de Portugal (continente). Estas foram plantadas em locais adequados: a Malvasia em Câmara de Lobos e Estreito de Câmara de Lobos; o Boal em Campanário, Calheta e Ponta do Pargo; o Sercial no Jardim da Serra, Arco de São Jorge e Fajã da Ovelha; já o Verdelho no Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta Delgada e Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

O vinho da Madeira começou a ser enviado para o estrangeiro mais cedo, e a sua fama tornou-se lendária. No século XVI, no tempo de François L, tinha um lugar de honra na Corte Francesa.

Os czares da Rússia importaram-no diretamente. Jorge IV tornou-o popular na Corte Inglesa, mas foi Catarina de Bragança, esposa de Carlos II de Inglaterra, que o apresentou oficialmente lá.

Tão popular tornou-se a Madeira em Inglaterra que, na comemoração do centenário IV do nascimento de Shakespeare, um barril com 500 litros de Malmsey foi desfilado pelas ruas de Londres. A procissão parou no George Inn e o barril foi distribuído, sendo oferecido aos presentes um copo. Para apoiar este gosto inglês pelo Vinho Madeira, há uma lenda que conta que quando o Duque de Clarence foi prisioneiro na Torre de Londres em 1478, escolheu como seu modo de morte ser afogado em vinho Malmsey.

Festa do Vinho Madeira 8 a 24 de outubro A Festa do Vinho Madeira, um dos cartazes turísticos mais emblemáticos que visa enaltecer as tradições vinícolas e a sua importância

socioeconómica na Madeira, acontece na cidade do Funchal, habitualmente na placa central da Avenida Arriaga e na Praça do Povo.

Decorações, exposições e até lugares de degustação do vinho Madeira, são atividades que habitualmente completam o evento.

Porto Santo Também na Ilha dourada é habitual acontecer, no final de agosto, um dos maiores eventos ali celebrados: a Festa das Vindimas, que dá a conhecer a todos os visitantes as diversas castas produzidas no concelho. O evento realizase no Largo das Palmeiras, com diversas atividades lúdicas.

Porto da Cruz A Vila é conhecida pela produção de vinho seco americano, feito a partir da uva americana, sendo conhecido localmente como ‘vinho seco’.

Nesta freguesia é celebrada, habitualmente em setembro, a “Festa da Uva e do Agricultor”, um dos eventos culturais mais importantes da mesma.

n the district of Câmara de Lobos, at a distance of about 12 km from Funchal, the festival begins with the actual picking of the grapes. The rest of the wine making ritual, namely carrying the grapes to the press, pressing of the grapes and all the traditions of a typical Madeira feast, are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. There are a variety of activities and shows in Funchal connected to traditional wine-making. Vines were introduced in 1425, the first vine stocks being Malvasia (Malmsey), imported from Cyprus, Crete and Italy, Sercial from the Rhine, Boal from Burgundy, Verdelho, from Portugal (mainland).

These were planted in suitable places: the Malvasia at Câmara de Lobos and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos; the Boal at Campanário, Calheta, Ponta do Pargo; the Sercial at Jardim da Serra, Arco de São Jorge, Fajã da Ovelha; the Verdelho at Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta Delgada and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

Madeira wine began to be sent abroad at an early date, and its fame has become legendary. In the 16th Century, in the time of François l, it had a place of honour at the French Court. The Czars of Russia imported it direct. George IV made it popular at the English Court.

So popular has Madeira become in England that at the commemoration of the IV centenary of Shakespeare’s birth a barrel with 500 litres of Malmsey was paraded through the streets of London.

The procession stopped at the George Inn and the barrel was tapped, a glass being offered to those present. To back up this English taste for Madeira wine there is a legend that when the Duke of Clarence was a prisoner in the Tower of London in 1478, he chose as his way of death to be drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine.

Madeira Wine Festival October, 8th to 24th The Madeira Wine Festival is celebrated in the beginning of September/October, at a time of the year when grapes are being collected all over the island. The aim is to recreate and reconstitute the population’s old habits, which go back to the

time of settlement of the island.

Decorations, exhibitions and even madeira wine tasting places are activities that you can find.

Porto Santo At the end of August, one of the biggest events celebrated on Porto Santo Island is the “Festa das Vindimas” (Grape Harvest Festival), which makes known to all visitors the various varieties of grapes produced in the local.

The event takes place at Largo das Palmeiras, with several recreational activities.

Porto da Cruz This local is known for the production of American dry wine, made from the american grape, being known locally as ‘vinho seco’ (dry wine).

In this parish of Porto da Cruz, the “Festa da Uva e do Agricultor” (Grape and Farmer’s Feast) is usually celebrated in September, one of the most important cultural events in here.

Bolo de Maçã ao Vinho Madeira Ingredientes - 300g de farinha - 300g de manteiga - 150g de açúcar - 4 colheres de fermento royal - 4 ovos - 4 maçãs

Calda - 1 copo de Vinho Madeira Doce - ½ copo de Água - Casca de Limão - Canela moída q.b.

- 2 colheres de manteiga - 100g de açúcar Derreter a manteiga, juntar os demais ingredientes e engrossar o molho.

Humedecer o bolo.

Preparação Bater a manteiga, o açúcar e as gemas até ficar em creme. Por fim as claras em castelo. Colocar camadas 14

finas de maçã, sendo a última camada a de maçã. Depois de cozido, deitar a calda.

Apple Cake with Madeira Wine Ingredients Preparing

- 300g flavour - 300g butter - 150g sugar - 4 teaspoons baking powder - 4 eggs - 4 apples

Syrup - 1 cup Madeira Wine - ½ cup water - Lemon peel - Cinnamon - 2 tablespoons butter - 100 grs sugar Melt the butter and add the remaining ingredients. Mix and allow to simmer.

Pour the warm syrup over the cake.

Cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg yolks and beat until the mixture becomes light and creamy. Sieve in the flour and baking powder and mix. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks appear and gently fold into the cake mixture.

Pour a little of the cake mixture into a well greased cake tin, enough to cover the bottom. Peel and thinly slice the apples. Cover the mixture in the cake tin with layer of apple slices and pour on another layer of cake mixture. Repeat the layering process, finishing with a layer of sliced apples. Place in warm oven and cool.

Allow the cake to cool, before pouring the syrup over the cake.

Situada na profundidade de um vale que a abraça, ladeado por íngremes montanhas, o ex-líbris da freguesia é, sem dúvida, o imponente miradouro da Eira do Serrado localizado a uma altitude de 1095 metros, incapaz de deixar indiferentes os que o visitam.

Na gastronomia predomina o uso da castanha, a produção mais caraterística da localidade, concretamente na confeção da tradicional “Sopa de Castanha”. Em sua homenagem é celebrada a “Festa da Castanha”, no dia 1 de novembro.

O Curral das Freiras serve ainda de ponto de partida para alguns percursos pedestres, entre eles a levada do Curral e Castelejo, com uma extensão de 10 km que demora cerca de 4 a 5 horas a ser percorrida.

Nun’s Valley is the unique place on Madeira Island where you can’t see the sea because of your huge valley.

urral das Freiras (Nun’s Valley) is a civil parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos. It is situated in the mountainous interior of the island.

The name was born maybe after 1560, when the nuns of the Convent took refuge on these properties, during the French privateer attacks on Funchal.

In the Nun’s Valley you can find the Eira do Serrado viewpoint, located at an altitude of 1095 meters, where you can discover amazing landscapes.

In gastronomy, chestnut is the most characteristic production of the locality, specifically in the confection of the traditional chestnut soup. In his honor is celebrated the “Chestnut Festival”, on November 1.

In addition to all this, Curral das Freiras still serves as a starting point for some walking routes like levada of curral and castelejo, with an extension of 10 km that can be done between 4 to 5 hours.

Ribeiro Frio Portela magia das levadas, que rasgam a Madeira de norte a sul, fazem desde sistema de transporte de água (construído pelo árduo trabalho de várias gerações de madeirenses valorosos) um dos maiores atrativos turísticos da ilha.

No concelho de Machico, numa ligação entre o Ribeiro Frio e a Portela podemos encontrar mais um percurso que promete maravilhar os visitantes.

Quinta da Junta situa-se na freguesia de Santo António da Serra, concelho de Machico.

O Santo da Serra acolhe, desde 1975, o Jardim da Quinta da Junta, uma encantadora extensão de floresta com flores coloridas e vida selvagem diversificada. A área foi outrora a casa da família Blandy, bem ao gosto inglês. O parque é composto sobretudo por uma mancha verdejante recheada de espécies arbóreas e arbustivas indígenas e exóticas, reservando um espaço para uma variedade de vida selvagem, incluindo veados, cavalos e cabras, bem como um recinto de aves. Este é o sítio ideal para fazer um piquenique num dia quente e ensolarado que dispõe até de um parque infantil, um campo de mini-golfe, campo de ténis e um miradouro que abrange as serras do concelho de Machico, Ponta de São Lourenço e Ilha do Porto Santo.

Santo Da Serra is home to the “Quinta da Junta Garden”, a lovely expanse of woodland with colourful flowers and diverse wildlife. The area used to be the home of the former Blandy Park, which is now called the Quinta do Santo da Serra. The Park is made up of woodland with paths lined with camellias and has a variety of wildlife including deer, horses and goats as well as a bird enclosure. The Quinta do Santo da Serra is ideal for having a picnic on a hot sunny day and even has a children’s play park.

Fura-bucho-do-atlântico, regionalmente conhecido por Patagarro (Puffinus puffinus), é uma ave marinha, pertencente à ordem dos Procellariiformes, encontrando-se bem distribuída no Nordeste do Atlântico.

Ave de pequeno porte, preta e branca, que voa com batimentos de asa bruscos. É muito menor que a maioria das gaivotas. Prefere águas oceânicas frias, sendo raramente avistada a partir de terra. Mostra um forte contraste entre as partes superiores pretas e as inferiores brancas, tendo um pequeno crescente branco por trás do olho.

A face inferior das asas é sobretudo branca, podendo por vezes ter marcas escuras.

Na sua dieta incluem-se peixes, cefalópodes e crustáceos, bem como desperdícios da pesca. Na Madeira,

Breeds commonly on Madeira, in small numbers (estimated over 500 pairs). Present around all coasts from February to September, it is possible to observe this species in their migration route.

Similar to Macaronesian Shearwater but a little larger and longer-winged, with more pointed wing tips. The upperparts are a little browner black, but more useful ID pointers are the larger amount of black on the face and the broader dark wing tip and trailing edge on the underwing.

It has a very rapid and strong wing beat, shorter series of wingbeats on straight wings followed by longer glides. In stronger winds birds merely glide, switching from one side to the other and often arcing up high into the sky before dropping back down again.

In the nesting season, these birds gather at sea by the evening before heading for their nesting colony inland.

Noisy at night in breeding colonies, giving a series of raucous coughing and cackling calls with drawn-out crooning notes.

Hortelã de leite Mentha spicata L. Growth Form Perennial herb produced from a creeping rhizome. Has an upright growth habit.

Foliage Leaves light green and ovate to lanceolate with deep veins and serrate leaf margin. Leaves have opposite arrangement and little to no petioles; are often hairless on both sides, but the lower side may have a few hairs. Rubbing the leaves releases a minty fragrance.

Nome Científico: Mentha spicata L. Família: Lamiaceae (LABIATAE) Nome Comum: Hortelã de leite, Hortelãdas-cozinhas, Hortelã-dos-temperos, Hortelã-verde, Hortelã-vulgar.

DESCRIÇÃO Herbácea perene muito aromática, rizomatosa. Folhas sesseis com 30-53 mm x 10-25 mm, ovadas a Ianceolado-ovadas, um pouco mais largas na base, serradas, com alguns pêlos simples na página inferior e caules escuros. A inflorescência é uma espiga ramificada com numerosos verticilastros. Brácteas pequenas e pedicelos glandulosos. Cálice 1,5-1,8 mm, tubo campanulado, glabro, com dentes mais o menos iguais, ciliados. Corola lilas, rosada ou esbranquiçada de 2-3,2 mm.

Usada no leite quente para aromatizar, dando às crianças e às mulheres na amamentação, para produzirem mais leite. Também utilizada para dormir e nas dores de estômago e febres. O óleo essencial é usado nas bronquites, em inalações e fricções.

Uses Leaves are used to flavor teas, desserts, candies, vegetable dishes and sauces. Leaves may also be consumed raw, such as adding them to salads.

Medicine Inhaling the essential oils may help relieve some cold symptoms. Leaves are also used as a medicinal stimulant.

It is thought that drinking spearmint tea helps to relieve headaches, fever, and digestive problems.

santana esde há muito que são um símbolo icónico e a maior imagem de marca, não só da região, marcando presença em inúmeros cartazes turísticos promocionais pelo mundo fora. A história relata que terão sido estas típicas casas de Santana construções de outros tempos primitivos, usando materiais como madeira e colmo.

A sua forma é triangular, coberta somente por materiais naturais com uma acentuada inclinação com o único propósito dos escoamentos das chuvas, evitando as infiltrações e garantindo a impermeabilidade.

De quatro em quatro anos é necessária a manutenção, popularmente chamada de “abafar a casa”, permitindo assim uma renovação cíclica da palha.

Três tipos de construção identificam as casas típicas de Santana: as casas de empena ou de fio, de meio-fio e as de quatro águas, estas últimas construídas sobretudo na freguesia de São Jorge.

Destacam-se pelas suas cores típicas: a porta vermelha, normalmente perpendicular a uma tira da mesma cor, e as janelas contornadas de azul. Os jardins repletos de fauna endémica que as rodeiam tornam o cenário pitoresco, em conjunto com os bancos de madeira situados estrategicamente para a foto perfeita.

Santana Typical houses

hey have long been an iconic symbol in Madeira Island and there aren´t many places where you can find the traditional triangular and colourful Madeiran houses, in general in Santana and São Jorge, both in the municipality of Santana.

These typical houses in Santana were built from other primitive times, using materials such as wood and thatched roof. These traditional houses maintain their original architectural features, with a ground floor that used to house animals during the night, and an upper floor, which served as the family’s home. Every four years or so, these houses, covered with wheat straw (“colmo”), need a cyclical renovation of the straw, an operation popularly called “muffling the house”.

They stand out for their typical colors: The doors are usually painted in red and the outside walls also have their lower section painted in red as well. The doors and windows have a blue border painted outside them.

The gardens that surround them make the true scenery, with the strategically placed wooden benches for the perfect photography.

Conservatório Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira

Madeira Music Academy

ocalizado em plena cidade do Funchal, o Conservatório – Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira, Engº Luiz Peter Clode (o fundador), teve um papel preponderante no ensino artístico da Ilha, contribuindo para uma instrução profissional e especializada nas diversas áreas das artes performativas como música, teatro e dança, tendo como papel fundamental as artes de palco.

Ainda denominada por Academia de Música da Madeira, abriu as suas portas em 1946, onde viria a ser mais tarde apelidada por Academia de Música e Belas Artes da Madeira, antes da sua nomenclatura final, associando assim várias formas de arte que fizessem jus à necessidade de uma oferta cultural abrangente. É em março de 2000 que o Conservatório – Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira passa a incluir, para além dos cursos tradicionais, os cursos de Instrumentista de Cordas e Teclas, Instrumentista de Sopros e Percussão Instrumentista de Jazz, Artes do Espetáculo – Interpretação e Intérprete de Dança Contemporânea, possibilitando dessa forma aos seus alunos os certificados de habilitação profissional de nível IV e equivalência ao 12º ano, assim como o acesso ao ensino superior.

Realizam-se regularmente audições escolares, concertos, espetáculos de dança e de teatro, cursos de aperfeiçoamento nos diversos instrumentos, workshops de jazz e de dança, motivando e refletindo o trabalho dos alunos no decorrer do ano letivo.

Dia Mundial da Música 1 de outubro Este dia foi criado em 1975 pelo International Music Council, uma instituição fundada em 1949 pela UNESCO.

In 1949, three years after the foundation of the Madeira Music Academy, the exams were made official by the Ministry of National Education through Decree-Law 37.454, allowing Madeiran students to develop their entire academic career in Funchal (equivalent to the Lisbon Conservatory General Course) without having to travel to the capital for the final exams.

Destacamos aqui, o Miradouro situado na freguesia da Fajã da Ovelha, mais precisamente na Raposeira do Lugarinho que é comummente conhecido como o Miradouro “Pico dos Bodes”, no entanto, segundo a Carta Geológica de Portugal, este pico chama-se Cabo do Lugarinho.

Neste miradouro é possível visualizar as freguesias vizinhas dos Prazeres

Jardim do Mar e do Paul do Mar, dando ao visitante um espectáculo de cortar a respiração com a visualização das montanhas frondosas e do mar azul intenso que parece não ter fim.

Situa-se próximo da ribeira do Paul, sobranceiro à igreja do Paul do Mar.

Em todas as freguesias do Município Calhetense poderá encontrar miradouros que lhe permitirão apreciar suas belezas, desde aos terrenos cultivados, à arquitetura e aos costumes das suas gentes.

Miradouro da Sagrada Família Ribeira Brava

Situado no Sítio de São Paulo, a sua construção surge a partir da capela da Sagrada Família. Apelidado de capelamiradouro, foi construído em 2005 pelo imigrante madeirense Manuel Macedo.

Oferece paisagens sobre a vila do concelho e está organizado com diversos espaços dinâmicos, incluindo uma área de lazer e um pequeno parque infantil.

Sagrada Família Viewpoint Ribeira Brava

Located in Sítio de São Paulo, was available to the public after the construction of the Holy Family Chapel.

Nicknamed Holy Family chapelviewpoint, was built in 2005 by Madeiran immigrant Manuel Macedo. Here, one can visibly see the aged tables, chairs, fireplace, wash basins, a typical A-shaped thattched Santana dwelling and a small playground built in cement and decorated with flowers.

The chapel is adorned with statues of saints donated by visitors and locals alike. The location also offers a stunning view of the town of Ribeira Brava.

Considerado um dos miradouros mais belos da Ilha, situa-se a uma altitude de cerca de 1500 metros. Para lá chegar é necessário fazer uma curta caminhada, passando pela Casa de Abrigo. Em dias de céu limpo, oferece vistas sobre o vale de São Vicente bem como todo o Maciço Montanhoso Central.

The Guindaste Viewpoint offers a wonderful view of the Atlantic outlining the northern coast of the island, extending from Faial to Ponta de São Lourenço and on days with good visibility it’s possible to see the island of Porto Santo to the Northeast.

With a unique natural beauty, the Guindaste viewpoint, located in Faial Parish is currently being reclassified and will rest on two platforms suspended over the sea.

It is a perfect place to observe Prainha beach, one of the few natural sandy beaches in Madeira and Monte Gordo (or da Piedade). Located near the parking lot, you will see a path going down to the beach. From here you will have wonderful views of the rock formations around and the Desert Islands.

The Cristo Rei Viewpoint is located in Garajau, and offers a panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean, the Garajau Natural Reserve, part of the Funchal Bay and Caniço de Baixo. This viewpoint owns his name to a statue of “Cristo Rei”, built in on top of a hill facing the ocean.
