The Casa do Povo da Boaventura, located in the village of Fajã do Penedo, in the municipality of São Vicente, will promote on December 14th and 15th, the fourteenth edition of the Madeira Traditional delicacies exhibition. This festivity intends to promote Madeira´s typical Christmas gastronomic delicacies, such as liqueurs, corn bread, and cakes. There will be also musical entertainment with the participation of several folk groups. A Casa do Povo da Boaventura, situada na localidade da Fajã do Penedo, no concelho de São Vicente, levará a cabo entre os dias 14 e 15 de dezembro, a XIV Mostra de Iguarias Tradicionais Madeirenses. Divulgar, promover e reinventar as tradições gastronómicas que são típicas do quotidiano madeirense no período natalício é o principal objetivo desta iniciativa que promete proporcionar grande animação, juntando à gastronomia típica natalícia – onde se incluem, naturalmente, os licores, as broas e os bolos de confeção tradicional – momentos musicais que estarão a cargo de diversos grupos folclóricos.

In December, Madeira celebrates one of its main Christmas traditions: “the Childbirth Masses”. All around the island, parishes hold religious services in celebration of the birth of Jesus, a ritual highlighted the liturgical chants sung by local choruses. After mass parishioners gather in the church yard in a very lively social gathering while tasting some of the typical Christmas gastronomic delicacies. These eucharistic services take place in the early morning usually around 6 A.M. Na Madeira, de 16 a 24 de dezembro, celebram-se as Missas do Parto no Centro do Funchal e nas paróquias de quase toda a região. São celebrações que anunciam o Nascimento do Menino Jesus, com destaque principal para os cânticos católicos entoados por corais. Habitualmente, no adro das igrejas, os fiéis reúnem-se num convívio cheio de muita animação onde não faltam as típicas iguarias caraterísticas desta quadra festiva. Estas missas são celebradas de madrugada, por volta das seis horas da manhã.

Night at the Market – Farmers Market | Funchal December, 23rd

December 23rd is the official day for Madeirans to make their traditional Christmas shopping’s in a ritual that takes thousands to the streets of the Farmers Market in Funchal. It is the perfect day to visit the market and get to know and buy all types of local products: fruits, vegetables, flowers, sweets and typical Christmas beverages. The market and the bars around it, stay open all night making it one of the longest and most fun-filled nights of the year in Funchal. É no dia 23 que, tradicionalmente, os madeirenses fazem as compras das iguarias para o Natal, num ritual que leva milhares de Madeirenses até às ruas do Mercado dos Lavradores, no Funchal. É o dia ideal para visitar o mercado e conhecer e comprar todo o tipo de produtos regionais: frutas, legumes, flores, doces e bebidas típicas de Natal. Os bares circundantes aproveitam a ocasião para se manterem abertos toda a noite, colaborando para que esta seja uma das noites mais longas e animadas da Madeira. Nesta azáfama contagiante, que também atrai muitos visitantes, é notório o verdadeiro espírito da “Festa”.

“Cantar os Reis" – Twelfth Night Songs | Funchal January, 5th

Madeira hosts the fourth edition of the “Madeira Plunge” one of the early events taking place in the island in beginning of 2020, an occasion which is also has long tradition in other cities worldwide. This event takes place on the 1st of January at noon, at Ponta Gorda Bathing Complex, also known as “Poças do Governador”, an occasion which gathers lots of locals and tourists, a charitable event whose proceeds will be donated to a local charity entity. This is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Madeira celebrated a little all over the island, a ritual that brings together families, friends and neighbours who go form door to door singing the popular carols designated Janeiras "Twelfh nights songs” from door to door. The Association of the Casas do Povo of the Autonomous Region of Madeira organize and produce the traditional twelfth night songs show, a concert held in the Auditorium of the Municipal Garden, in Funchal downtown area, integrated in the Christmas and New Year’s festivities program. Esta velha tradição popular madeirense celebrase um pouco por toda a ilha, reunindo famílias, amigos e vizinhos que saem à rua para “Cantar os Reis ou Janeiras”, de porta em porta. O espetáculo “Vamos Cantar os Reis”, a cargo da Associação de Casas do Povo da Região Autónoma da Madeira, decorre no Auditório do Jardim Municipal, no Funchal, no dia 5 de janeiro, juntando, à semelhança do que acontece todos os anos, milhares de espectadores que encerram, em conjunto, estas festividades, celebrando o início de mais um ano.

Madeira Islands celebrate, in a particularly festive and ceremonial way all over the island, the religious festivity of Santo Amaro. This is the day when families gather to share the remaining delicacies of this festive season, to take out the Christmas decorations and lapinhas (cribs) and to "clean the kitchen cabinets – a custom deeply rooted in the traditions of popular people of Madeira. On this day the municipality of Santa Cruz pays tribute to its patron saint in a very lively religious festivity, which marks the end of the Christmas holidays.

O dia de Santo Amaro celebra-se um pouco por toda a ilha da Madeira de forma festiva e cerimoniosa. Esta festividade marca o dia em que as famílias desmancham os presépios, as lapinhas e “varrem os armários”, uma tradição que consiste em visitar familiares e amigos que se juntam para partilhar as últimas iguarias das festas. Nesta data, o município de Santa Cruz presta homenagem ao seu santo padroeiro, numa festa religiosa cheia de muita animação, que marca o encerramento das festividades de Natal.

10 Panelo Feast | Chão da Ribeira | Seixal January, 26th

This is a famous Madeiran tradition, an ancient festivity celebrated with a special feeling by the locals of this village located in the northern part of Madeira. This popular tradition begins early in the morning, when families gather to socialize and to prepare lunch - the “Panelo" (pot). This culinary dish consists of a type of stew made with vegetables and blood sausage, very similar to “Cozido à Portuguesa” (“Portuguese stew”). This event also features the typical madeiran stalls, selling local food and drinks, and musical entertainment. Dando continuidade a uma das suas mais antigas tradições, vivida com grande entusiasmo e adesão pela população local, a freguesia do Seixal promove, no dia 26 de janeiro, a “Festa do Panelo”, um evento de cariz popular que reúne centenas de famílias em convívio, relembrando tradições madeirenses de outros tempos. A festa inicia-se logo de manhã, altura em que, as famílias começam a tratar dos preparativos para o almoço – o “Panelo” -, uma iguaria gastronómica que consiste na confeção de um prato à base de legumes e enchidos, muito semelhante o cozido à portuguesa. Refira-se que, esta iniciativa conta com a presença das típicas barracas de comes-e-bebes e muita animação.

December 16th to 24th -The Childbirth Masses

Christmas begins with the celebrations of the "Childbirth Masses", starting on the 16th of December and ending on Christmas Eve, with the celebration of the Midnight Mass. The "Childbirth Masses" also designated as the 'Novenas' (Nine masses) consists of a total of nine religious ceremonies which are held at dawn. After mass, the church goers gather in the churchyard to listen to Christmas carols, followed by groups playing string instruments, accordions and castanets, an occasion marked by the typical " despiques", "rivalry songs", followed by the drinking of the "mata-bicho" -, "hair of the dog cocktail" complemented by the tasting of liquors, " broas" biscuits and cakes.

December 23rd - Farmers’ Market Christmas Night

On December 23rd, Madeirans take this opportunity to make their lastminute Christmas shopping in a commotion, that intensifies the essence of the "Festa", a designation commonly attributed by locals to refer to the beginning of the Christmas season. The locals go to the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market) to buy the last items or delicacies in order to ultimate their Christmas decorations and prepare the typical delicacies of the season. The surrounding streets are closed to traffic and are filled with various food stalls that are open all night, selling innumerable regional products like flowers, shrubs, fruits, vegetables, sweets, pork in wine and garlic rolls and typical drinks like "poncha". At nightfall the biggest attraction of the day takes place, a performance by traditional Christmas carollers, on which locals take the role of true artists. This occasion gathers music and folk bands who contribute to maintain the jubilant atmosphere apart from, lots of entertainment that lasts until dawn.

December 1st is the official date on which Christmas illuminations (which remain linked until mid-January) are connected, followed by major celebrations, cultural events, concerts and exhibitions that take place throughout the city for Christmas. Madeira Island is truly magical and unforgettable at this time of year.

With Funchal fully lit up, the stage is set for an unforgettable show, renowned in 2006 by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest firework display in the World. A dazzling night that takes everyone's breath away. Celebrate the New Year with joyfulness and enthusiasm without overlooking champagne and the traditional twelve raisins. January 1st – New Year´s Concert

Held by the Classical Orchestra of Madeira, this concert that marks the first day of the year takes place at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre.

CHISTMAS IN FUNCHAL The main capital - Funchal is transformed into a life-size nativity scene, given the natural features of its amphitheatre contour, from which floral decorations and multi-colored lights emerge. The city's main streets become genuine living "tableaux" depicting regional traditions which alongside with the concerts, folk groups and philharmonic bands performances, delight both residents and the thousands of tourists who are visiting the island during this time of the year. January 5th - The Kings’ Carols

On the 6th of January the arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated, which occasion is commemorated with the famous "Bolo Rei" (King's Cake) which encloses a bean and a surprise gift. Tradition says that whoever is lucky enough to end up with the slice with the bean will have to buy the cake the following year while whoever ends up with the surprise gift will have to buy the drinks. On the night from January 5th to the 6th it is customary to sing "Kings' carols", a tradition kept all around the islands, in which people go to their neighbours houses to sing in small groups, accompanied by musicians playing regional instruments , such as the "viola de arame" (string guitar), the "braguinha" (ukekele), the "rajão" (a five or six-stringed instrument) and triangles, in addition to the women who bring food supplies for the night (wine, fresh bread, sweets, etc.).

Wickerwork is one of the main industries of Madeira. In the 1850s, Camacha, Boaventura, and São Vicente were the main centers of production where the locals devoted themselves to this typical craft. You can now find wide variety objects of all shapes and sizes such as trays, baskets, furniture, many decorative pieces and most important, wickerwork for the Monte Wicker Sleigh ride; all made by hand on the Island. The Camacha Wicker Factory (Café Relógio) is a great place to watch the work happening. Also, you can purchase a souvenir here. In Café Relógio you can find a museum with wicker pieces, and the shop to buy wicker pieces.

One of Madeira’s oldest delicacies, the Honey Cake (Bolo de Mel) is a very traditional dessert in Portuguese cuisine. It combines simple and sweet ingredients. For example, molasses, cinnamon powder, chopped almonds, and walnuts. This gives the richly tasting cake a unique flavor. People usually bake this cake at Christmas time, but you can purchase it year-round. One of the places to buy the honey cake, besides shops and supermarkets, is at Fabrica Santo Antonio, which also has many other Portuguese desserts to try.

Aguardente is a spirit drink from Madeira, produced by alcoholic fermentation and distillation of the juice of sugarcane, and distilled by traditional methods. The result? A specific characteristic of rum, also known as the “firewater” of Madeira. Be careful, it is strong! It is widely available at supermarkets around the island. It´s used to make another well knowned drink tradicional in Madeira, “Poncha”. Besides supermarkets, you can buy it where it is produced, at Engenho da Calheta or Engenho da Costa Norte (Porto da Cruz).

Cut the meat in cubes and season with salt. On the following day, make a marinade with the vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, pepper and herbs. Preparation: Mix well all the ingredients. Pour in a greased pan and bake in a very hot oven. Secret: the drier the fruit, the longer the cake lasts, up to 5 days. This cake is initially beaten vigorously

500 g unleavened flour 30 g leavening (baker's yeast) about 3 dl water

1000 g unleavened flour 350 g sugar 300 g butter 150 g lard clove (about 1.5 g) fennel (about 1.5g) 15 g cinnamon 50 g nuts

Knead the flour with the yeast, make a ball, cover with plastic and let rise for 2 to 3 hours.

50 g chopped almonds lemon zest 400 g mixed crystallized fruit 150 g sultanas 15 g baking soda juice of 1 orange 8 dl Madeira molasses 2 dl Madeira wine

Ingredients for the leavening:

Mix the butter with the sugar until creamy, add spices and juice of an orange and a little lemon zest. Melt the molasses and lard together and add to mixture. Add the flour and baking soda and mix for about five minutes. Add to this dough the leaven previously kneaded and continue to mix for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Lastly, add the crystallised fruit and mix for an additional five minutes. Let rise for 24 hours. Place the dough in greased and wax paper-lined pans (only the bottom of the pan) and decorate the cakes with almonds and nuts on top. Bake them in a 190o degree oven, for 25 minutes. Honey cake is broken by hand. NOTE: Use pans with removable bottoms, with a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 4 cm and placedough 3 cm high.

Ingredients: 1 l sugar cane rum 1 l water 1kg sugar Rinds of 6/7 tangerines (large and ripe)

Preparation: Finely cut the tangerine rind, with no white so as to not be bitter. Steep the rinds in thesugar cane rum for 15 days. Once the steeping time has passed, add water and sugar and heat to make simple syrup. Add simple syrup to the sugar cane rum, removing rinds andfiltering the liqueur. It is now ready to serve.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is home to an impressive collection of art works from various parts of the world dating back as far as the second century A.D. Characteristically Portuguese stone arches, doorways and windows from the 19th century have been positioned throughout the Garden, forming a contrast with the vegetation and adorning the visitor walkways. In April 1994 José Berardo acquired two national heritage Manueline pieces, a window and a niche, of inestimable value. One of these pieces had gone unnoticed for four decades in a garden in the Azores (Celorico da Beira) until it was advertised for sale in the local media. The Manueline style as the name itself suggests, dates from the reign of D. Manuel between 1495 and 1521. Among other works are statues crafted in marble from the 18th century, several stone coats of arms dating from the 16th century, bronze statues from the 20th century by artists such as James Butler and a bust of Emperor Adrian in roman marble from the second century A.D. The visitor may also view four angels sculptured in granite, which represented four of the five senses: smell, sight, hearing and taste. The environmental and scenic atmosphere created by José Berardo in this mild Madeira climate, has provided visitors with a natural environment for the architecture of gardens and a romantic visit where a variety of styles combined in simplicity and beauty may be appreciated.

THE REIS ADMIRAL PARK

The Reis Admiral Park , located in Funchal's Old Town, at Christmas was a tradition that matched other ones´s like the Christmas illuminations of the city of Funchal, the Farmers’ Market Christmas Night and the Night of St. Sylvester (New Year´s Eve), mobilizing families from all the parishes of the Island during this festive season for Funchal, and mandatory presence of Christmas and end-of-year celebrations of Madeira, happening between the beginning of December and ending in the first week of January. It welcomed for decades the largest amusement park on the Island, where in addition to typical amusements such as bumper carts and other playful activities, the presence of a large circus tent was always assiduous, with its spectacle with clowns, trapeze artists and animals, making the delights of kids and adults of several generations, along with eats and drinks typical of fair (cotton candy, popcorn, etc.) and other gastronomic delights typicall of Madeiran Christmas time.

For a few years the amusement park was located on Praia Formosa, Funchal, and in 2017 returned to downtown Funchal, now located in the middle of Avenida do Mar, near Praça do Povo (in the pier 8 area), almost two decades after absence at the time of Christmas and New Year´s Eve, returning to bring more excitement to downtown Funchal in this festive season, in addition to christmas illuminations and other activities that take place on the central plate of Avenida Arriaga (Christmas Village, etc.).

O Parque Almirante Reis, localizado na Zona Velha do Funchal, no Natal era uma tradição que igualava a das iluminações natalícias da cidade do Funchal, a da Noite do Mercado, a da noite de S. Silvestre (Fim do Ano), mobilizando famílias de todas as freguesias da Ilha nessa época festiva para o Funchal, e presença obrigatória do cartaz de festas de Natal e final de ano da Madeira, acontecendo entre o início de dezembro e encerrando na primeira semana de janeiro. Acolheu durante décadas o maior parque de diversões da Ilha, onde para além das diversões típicas como os carrinhos de choque e outras atividades lúdicas, era sempre assídua a presença de uma grande tenda de circo, com o seu espetáculo com palhaços, trapezistas e animais, fazendo as delícias de miúdos e graúdos de várias gerações, a par com comes e bebes típicos de feira (algodão doce, pipocas, etc) e outras delícias gastronómicas tipicamente natalícias madeirenses.

Evolução do local O Almirante Reis é talvez a zona da cidade que sofreu mais alterações a seguir ao 25 de Abril. O velho campo de futebol de terra batida (onde se localizava na época natalícia o parque de diversões), deu lugar a um parque de estacionamento, que mais tarde passou para o auto-silo, tendo crescido um jardim com a estação do Teleférico do Monte. Durante alguns anos o parque de diversões esteve localizado na Praia Formosa, no Funchal, e em 2017 regressou à baixa do Funchal, localizando-se agora em plena Avenida do Mar, perto da Praça do Povo (na zona do cais 8), quase duas décadas depois de ausência na época de Natal e Fim do Ano, voltando a trazer mais animação à baixa do Funchal nesta época festiva, além das iluminações natalícias e outras atividades que acontecem na placa central da Avenida Arriaga (Aldeia de Natal, etc.).

Education Lourdes Castro attended the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon (now the Faculty of Fine Arts at University of Lisbon). She completed her studies there in 1956.

Career

Castro held her first solo exhibition at Clube Funchalense, Funchal, in 1955. Around this time she also participated in some collective exhibitions in Lisbon. Lourdes Castro left for Munich in 1957 and, shortly thereafter, settled in Paris. The following year, together with the KWY group, which included such artists as Gonçalo Duarte, João Vieira, José Escada, René Bertholo (her husband, until he passed away, in 2005), Costa Pinheiro, Jan Voss and Christo, she participated in various group activities. In 1960 the painter joined the KWY show at Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, an exhibition that, according to Rui Mário Gonçalves, marked a new stage in the Portuguese art. After 25 years of living in Paris, Castro returned to Funchal, Portugal, 1983, where she currently lives. Among Lourdes Castro's latest major solo exhibitions have been the following:

Lourdes de Castro was born on December 9, 1930 (celebrates 89 this year) in Funchal. Her grandmother, Ana Laura Estela Magna, was the first student of the Liceu do Funchal. Lourdes studied at the German School of Funchal until it ended due to World War II. After high school he stayed in Madeira for three years working in a kindergarten.

Her artworks have featured in numerous exhibitions at major galleries and museums, including the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museu Coleção Berardo. She was awarded the following awards: Medal of the Regional Council Salon de Montrouge, Paris, in 1995; CELPA Award / Vieira da Silva in 2004; EDP Lisbon Grand Prix in 2000.

Today, her works are displayed in several public and private collections, among which: National Museums of Warsaw, Wroclaw and Lódz; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade; Museum of Modern Art, Havana; Calouste Gulbenkian Museum Modern Collection, Lisbon; Serralves Foundation, Porto.

Lourdes de Castro, uma das mais importantes artistas portuguesas contemporâneas, é natural da Ilha da Madeira. A paisagem natural da ilha que a rodeou desde pequena, e para a qual escolheu retornar desde 1983, é uma paixão que acompanhará a sua vida e por consequência também o seu trabalho, veja-se, por exemplo, a série O grande herbário de sombras (1972 - Imagem 3), obtidas pela colocação de plantas e flores sobre papel fotossensível. Nascida a 9 de dezembro de 1930 (completa 89 anos este ano) no Funchal, a sua avó, Ana Laura Estela Magna, foi a primeira aluna do Liceu do Funchal. Lourdes estudou na Escola Alemã do Funchal até esta ter encerrado devido à II Guerra Mundial. Após o liceu ficou na Madeira três anos a trabalhar num kindergarten (jardim de infância). Frequentou o curso de Pintura (Curso Superior de Belas Artes) da Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, curso que não viria a terminar por via da sua "expulsão" em 1956, "pela não conformidade com o cânone académico que dominava o sistema de ensino de então". Parte para Munique em 1957 e, pouco depois, instala-se em Paris com o marido, René Bertholo. No ano seguinte funda, juntamente com René Bertholo, Costa Pinheiro, João Vieira, José Escada, Gonçalo Duarte, Jan Voss e Christo, o grupo KWY, participando nas diversas iniciativas do grupo (...) Este ciclo contou com a participação de representantes de instituições nacionais e regionais, que prestaram testemunhos muito importantes sobre a realidade pirotécnica do país.

MIM – Que eventos destaca, dos que têm realizado na região, desde a criação da empresa, em 2015? RM - São vários os eventos que temos realizado desde 2015, tanto para clientes particulares como para entidades públicas, desde ciclos de conferências a concertos, festas e eventos culturais, iluminações e ornamentações decorativas e festivas, pirotecnia, entre outros. Desses eventos, posso destacar a nossa participação no Festival Atlântico com o nosso espetáculo pirotécnico e também equipamentos audiovisuais e estruturas, desde a sua criação em 2002; eventos musicais como o NOS APRESENTA (Sara Tavares; Capitão Fausto e Márcia; Dj Vibe / Moullinex em 2019 – Palco, Som, Luz e backline) e Maktub Sounds Good (2017 a 2019 - Palco, Som, Luz e backline), eventos desportivos como o Rali Vinho Madeira (2019 – som, luz e estruturas), eventos culturais como a Festa do Vinho Madeira e Festival Colombo (2019 – Palco, Som, Luz e estruturas) e o Paradise Circus (2019 - espetáculo inovador de artes circenses) no Festival Atlântico, Comemorações dos 600 anos em Machico e no Porto Santo ( Som, Luz e estruturas).

MIM – Em termos de produção e realização de projetos inovadores na região, quais os que aponta como mais relevantes para a empresa?

NOS APRESENTA 2019 SARA TAVARES

1) “Machico em Festa” um grande evento para assinalar a comemoração dos 600 anos do descobrimento da Madeira e do Porto Santo, onde em parceria com a Macedos Pirotecnia, criamos um espetáculo piromusical multimédia, que integrava, para além da musica, alguns efeitos especiais como laser, chamas e robótica, a montagem de um grande palco, com actuações musicais, instalações luminosas e videomapping na fachada do edifício do Forum Machico. 2) Na área dos congressos, muito recentemente, também realizamos o Congresso da Nacional da APAVT, no novíssimo Hotel Savoy Palace, onde instalamos, possivelmente, o maior ecrã de LED que a Madeira, evento que contava com a participação 700 Congressistas, tendo este sido o maior de sempre. 3) A Tc Luz e Eventos também foi a empresas responsável pela montagem das estruturas e equipamentos audiovisuais para a gala do “World Travel Awards” sendo este um grande evento internacional, considerado os “Oscares” do Turismo, onde mais uma vez a Madeira foi premiada, com várias distinções. 4) Espetáculo com Ecrãs de Água, onde com recurso à tecnologia visual de video mapping e efeitos multimédia, projectamos um vídeo alusivo aos grandes marcos da historia da Madeira numa cortina de água, e que aconteceu no Cais 8 no Funchal. 5) Mas sem duvida, o que maior visibilidade deu à nossa empresa foram as iluminações e decorações de natal do Funchal do presente ano e do ano passado, onde fizemos um conjugação entre os elementos tradicionais do natal madeirense, com as novas tecnologias, em que algumas das intalações são interactivas, sincronizadas com musica e outras instalações projectam luz, sendo um projecto 100% desenvolvido pela nossa empresa, desde a concepção e design, à produção das instalações e a própria montagem das mesmas. Tudo com recurso a tecnologias LED, que permite uma poupança energética na ordem dos80%, e com recurso a, sempre que possível, materiais amigos do ambiente, porque esta também é uma das missões da nossa empresa.

Sheep are rather common in Madeira. Ruminant mammals of the genus Ovis, they are usually stockier than its relative the goat; its horns, when present, are more divergent; it has scent glands in its face and hind feet; and the males lack the beards of goats. Sheep usually have short tails. In all wild species of sheep, the outer coat takes the form of hair, and beneath this lies a short undercoat of fine wool that has been developed into the fleece of domesticated sheep. Male sheep are called rams, the females ewes, and immature animals lambs. Mature sheep weigh from about 80 to as much as 400 pounds (35 to 180 kg).

A sheep regurgitates its food and chews the cud, thus enabling its four separate stomach compartments to thoroughly digest the grasses and other herbage that it eats. The animals prefer grazing on grass or legume vegetation that is short and fine, though they will also consume high, coarse, or brushy plants as well. They graze plants closer to the root than do cattle, and so care must be taken that sheep do not overgraze a particular range.

Curiosities They mature at about one year of age, and many breed when they reach the age of about one and a half years. Most births are single, although sheep do have twins on occasion. The lambs stop suckling and begin to graze at about four or five months of age. Domestic sheep differ from their wild progenitors and among themselves in conformation, quantity and quality of fleece, colour, size, milk production, and other characteristics. Most breeds of domesticated sheep produce wool, while a few produce only hair, and wild sheep grow a combination of wool and hair. Breeds of sheep having fine wool are generally raised for wool production alone, while breeds with medium or long wool or with only hair are generally raised for meat production.

FLORA  A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer such as spruce, pine, or fir associated with the celebration of Christmas. The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts, or other foods. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification. Today, there are a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garland, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star might be placed at the top of the tree to represent the angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity.  The custom of the Christmas tree developed in early modern Germany (where it is today called Weihnachtsbaum or Christbaum or "Tannenbaum") with predecessors that can be traced to the 16th and possibly 15th century, in which "devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes". Christmas trees were hung in St. George's Church, Sélestat since 1521. It acquired popularity beyond Germany during the second half of the 19th century. The Christmas tree has also been known as the "Yule-tree", especially in discussions of its folkloristic origins.

Pines are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees (or rarely shrubs) growing 3–80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching 15–45 m tall. There are about 115 species of pines worldwide, although different authorities accept between 105 and 125 species. Pines are native to most of the Northern Hemisphere. Pines are long-lived, typically reaching ages of 100–1,000 years, some even more. The longest-lived is the Great Basin bristlecone pine, Pinus longaeva. One individual of this species, dubbed Methuselah, is one of the world's oldest living organisms at around 4,600 years old. This tree can be found in the White Mountains of California.

Pines are among the most commercially important tree species valued for their timber and wood pulp throughout the world. In temperate and tropical regions, they are fast-growing softwoods that will grow in relatively dense stands, their acidic decaying needles inhibiting the sprouting of competing hardwoods. Commercial pines are grown in plantations for timber that is denser, more resinous, and therefore more durable than spruce (Picea). Pine wood is widely used in high-value carpentry items such as furniture, window frames, paneling, floors and roofing, and the resin of some species is an important source of turpentine.

ne of the best representations of the birth of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem is depicted in the "lapinha", designation given to the nativity crib from Madeira Island. The Madeiran crib is a reproduction of the island’s landscape with a fantasylike interpretation - depicting cottages, shepherds, sheep, music bands, pig slaughtering, processions, popular festivals, churches, daily life sceneries; seasonal fruit, the greenery of the fields, sprigs, the songs and rituals, the honey cakes, honey biscuits, custard apple and avocados in a genuine manifestation of the cheer joy which is associated with the word CHRISTMAS. The Nativity is characterised by a grotto or cave surrounded by hillocks, hilltops, valleys and waterfalls, integrated in a scattered group of houses where paths and lanes guide the statuettes of the Three Wise Men, shepherds and sheep who converge in direction of the Baby Jesus resting on his cradle next to the manger, a scene which condenses the spirit of devotion of the Christmas season. The Nativity Crib

Nativity Scenes or Lapinhas (also called Presépios) are particular on Madeira. Mostly, they come in two distinct forms. First is Lapinha in staircase. Second comes the Lapinha is rock form. Madeiran Traditions

The "escadinha" staircase reproduces the altar where the Baby Jesus is enthroned, placed on the last stall and crowned by a floral arch, a kind of canopy made of green-briers and flowers. This tradition may have been introduced by the first settlers from the Algarve. This tradition is commonly used in the Algarve and in the Azores and is still kept till today in Brazil. Alongside crib-making, it is also customary to decorate Christmas trees. Christmas trees are decorated according to personal style, with fairy lights, ornaments and candles in various colours, tinsel or bows and topped with a star that alludes to the star that guided the Three Kings to Bethlehem.

Sarah Lezito, world stunt riding champion, came to the Region at the invitation of Club Motards Madeira, which held the final event of the 2019 Urban Free Style Madeira Championship on Avenida Sá Carneiro earlier this month. The Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, IP-RAM, (IVBAM) launched Caracol Wine – special edition commemorating the 600th years – a PDO “Madeirense” white wine from the Caracol variety, traditionally planted on Porto Santo Island, among its typical crochet walls. A ‘Madeira’ premium wine alluding to the ‘600 years’ of the archipelago’s discovery, launched at Blandy’s Wine Lodge, is a blend of eleven singular wines from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, traditionally aged and from five typical white grape varieties of Madeira, namely Sercial, Verdelho, Terrantez, Boal and Malvasia. Each bottle costs around 4,500 euros and only 600 will be released to the market. The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque and India’s Ambassador to Portugal, Nandini Singla, inaugurated a bust of Gandhi (the Indian political and spiritual leader passed through Funchal in 1906 as he traveled from London to South Africa), in People’s Square, Funchal. ‘SuspiciouS’ is the Belgian clothing brand that came to Madeira to promote its latest video collection. Madeira Rum was promoted in Berlin, Germany, as part of the 13th Bar Convent Berlin Fair, through a masterclass organized by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute. Balcões This trail begins at regional highway E.R.103 at Ribeiro Frio and follows the levada of Serra do Faial, providing access to the Balcões belvedere, which offers beautiful panoramas of the deep valley of Ribeira da Metade and the parish of Faial.

n days when the visibility is good, you will be able to see the Central Mountain Chain of the island, with the highest peaks of the island standing out, Pico do Areeiro (1817 m), Pico do Gato, Pico das Torres, Pico Ruivo (1861 m) and the majestic geological display of the Penha d’Águia rock formation. Surrounding the levada the most varied endemic species abound, such as laurel trees (Laurus novocanariensis), Madeira mahogany (Persea indica), Madeira blueberry (Vaccinium padifolium), and Madeira orchids (Dactylorhiza foliosa), as well as exotic deciduous trees like English oaks (Quercus robur) and London plane trees (Platanus x acerifolia), which are found at regular intervals at the edge of the path. When you arrive at the Balcões belvedere, you will come upon a splendid scene completely occupied by the verdant valleys that characterise the Laurisilva forest, which is integrated in the Natura 2000 Network. This forest takes on added importance as a “water producer”, because it condenses the water from the mists on the leaves of the plants, and from there brings great quantities to the soil, where it later replenishes the springs and brooks.

This place it’s also ideal to bird watching, since there is a huge variety that nicely greets visitors of this belvedere. With a bit of luck, you may see a firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus maderensis), the smallest bird of the Madeira forest, chaffinches (Frigilla coelebs maderensis), grey wagtails (Motacilla cinerea schmitzi), blackbirds (Turdus merula cabreae), robins (Erithacus rubecula), buzzards (Buteo buteo harteti), or the very rare Madeira long-toed pigeon (Columba trocaz). Having retraced your steps and arriving at Ribeiro Frio once again, take advantage of the opportunity to purchase some souvenirs of regional handicrafts and look for the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) nursery of the Ribeiro Frio Fish Hatchery, the main purpose of which is the production of trout to replenish the water courses of Madeira Island.

 Points of Interest The Hydroelectric Plant of Fajã da Nogueira is completely visible from this location and is evidence of the value this forest has for the island of Madeira. The plant produces electricity with water from reservoirs and supplies the entire municipality of Santana.

ste trilho tem início e fim na estrada regional E.R.103 no Ribeiro Frio numa extensão de 1,5 Km (+ 1,5 Km de regresso), com uma duração de 1h30m (ida e regresso). O percurso acompanha a Levada da Serra do Faial dando acesso ao Miradouro dos balcões onde são observadas belas paisagens sobre o profundo vale da Ribeira da Metade, a Freguesia do Faial e vários picos da Madeira, incluindo o Pico Ruivo, o Pico do Areeiro, o Pico Gato e o Pico das Torres; assim as condições meteorológicas o permitam. Ao longo do percurso são encontradas espécies indígenas e endémicas da Madeira pertencentes ao ecossistema – Floresta Laurissilva do Til e do Vinhático, destacando-se as espécies arbóreas da família das Lauráceas: - O Loureiro (Laurus novocanariensis), o Til (Ocotea foetens), o Vinhático (Persea indica), o Folhado (Clethra arborea) e outras espécies como a Uveira da Serra (Vaccinium padifolium), Urze das vassouras (Erica platycodon ssp. maderincola) e Urze Molar (Erica arborea), Orquídea da Serra (Dactylorhiza foliosa). Neste percurso, para além das espécies vegetais indígenas são observadas espécies arbóreas exóticas de folha caduca como os Carvalhos (Quercus robur) e Plátanos (Platanus x acreifolia) que se distribuem regularmente na margem do trilho.

Com alguma frequência é possível avistar algumas espécies da avifauna como o tentilhão (Fringilla coelebs maderensis), a Lavadeira (Motacilla cinerea schmitzi), o Melro-preto (Turdus merula cabreae), o Papinho (Erithacus rubecula), a Manta (Buteo buteo harteti) e com menos frequência o Bisbis (Regulus ignicapillus maderensis) e o Pombo Trocaz (Columba trocaz). Deste Miradouro é observada a Central Hidroeléctrica da Fajã da Nogueira, produzindo electricidade com a água retida e abastecendo todo o Concelho de Santana. Em dias de boa visibilidade, poderá ser avistada a Cordilheira Central da Ilha, destacando-se os dois picos mais altos, o Pico do Areeiro (1817m) e o Pico Ruivo (1861m), assim como a Penha D´Águia (formação geológica). De regresso ao Ribeiro Frio pelo mesmo trilho, pode visitar o Parque Florestal do Ribeiro Frio, que integra o Centro Aquícola com o viveiro de trutas Arco-Íris (Oncorhynchus mykiss walbaum), cujo principal objectivo é a produção de trutas para o repovoamento das linhas de água da Ilha da Madeira.

Informação prática De carro alugado, basta seguir até Ribeiro Frio e estacionar junto aos restaurantes locias. A levada começa menos de 100 metros abaixo, do lado esquerdo. Se é dos que gosta de birdwatching, este é um dos melhores locais para fazer observação de aves na Madeira.

The amazing waves of Madeira have led many to consider it the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Here you will find all the conditions necessary for surfing and we recommend that you be careful, especially if you're a beginner. The Madeira Islands are fortunate to get swells from the North Atlantic and all kinds of waves, from point breaks to reef breaks. These excellent waves are also generated by the rugged and steep coast and the rocks on the seabed, causing great water outflows. The coasts of Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Porto da Cruz and São Vicente offer challenging waves that call for a day of surfing. In some of these locations there are schools that will ease first timers into this sport.

Faja da Areia (S. Vicente) is generally regarded as the best place to learn on the island, and hence is also the most crowded. Despite being the 'beginner spot’, it's still a steep, ledgy wave that can pound the snot out of anyone.

A ilha da Madeira é considerada por muitos como o Hawai da Europa. A qualidade das ondas, a temperatura da água e o clima com temperatura média de 21ºC durante a maior parte do ano, sol, paisagens e proximidade com o continente europeu fazem com que seja um destino de eleição para Surf ou Stand Up Paddle (SUP) . Os "pontos secretos" são só acessíveis de barco, e conhecidos apenas pelos mais experientes, permitem-lhe surfar sozinho as melhores e únicas ondas. O arquipélago da Madeira é um local privilegiado para receber "swells" do Atlântico Norte e beneficia de todo o tipo de ondas, desde "point breaks" a "reef breaks". Estas excelentes ondas são geradas também pelas costas acidentadas e íngremes e pelas rochas no fundo do mar que também ocasionam saídas da água aparatosas. As costas do Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Porto da Cruz e de São Vicente, com as suas ondas desafiantes, convidam a um dia de surf. Em algumas destas localidades pode encontrar escolas apropriadas que facilitarão uma primeira abordagem a esta atividade física. E se já ouviste falar das ondas da Madeira, seguramente sabes (ou deverias saber) quem é o Orlando Pereira, um dos melhores e mais antigos surfistas da Ilha. Orlando é uma das maiores referências de surf da Madeira e conhece as ondas locais como ninguém.

Num artigo de opinião no Diário de Notícias Orlando afirma: “Finalmente chegou a minha “época balnear!” Já estava a morrer de saudades das ondas! É verdade! Já posso preparar a prancha de surf e ir pensando no meu fato – sim, porque a água do mar ainda se mantém a uma temperatura agradável, entre 20°C a 24°C, o que continua até meados do mês de dezembro permitindo surfar à vontade sem frio no meu surf spot favorito! Para já, levo apenas comigo a prancha de surf, uma toalha e claro, não esquecer, o protetor solar – sim, porque a minha “época balnear” começou mais cedo, neste ano com ondas perfeitas nas águas cristalinas do Jardim do Mar e com este sol que tanto caracteriza o meu jardim. Na Madeira o Natal é uma das quadras mais festejada pela grande maioria da população, sendo a principal festa da tradição madeirense, celebrada desde o início da colonização. A celebração e a vivência do Natal na região resulta da herança dos frades Franciscanos que no início do povoamento tinham a jurisdição do espiritual da ilha, a que, mais tarde, se acrescentou a parte profana. Na etnografia madeirense o Natal é tradicionalmente conhecido e designado como a “Festa”, que só termina depois do Dia de Reis (6 de janeiro), ou, em algumas localidades da Ilha, no Dia de Santo Amaro (15 de janeiro), depois de realizado o “Varrer dos Armários”, desmontados os presépios tradicionais e demais decorações típicas da época.

A “Festa” em Santa Cruz COMEMORAÇÃO DA ALVORADA - 1 de dezembro Em Santa Cruz a quadra natalícia começa no dia 1 de dezembro com a comemoração da alvorada, pelas cinco e meia da manhã, alusiva à celebração da Independência de Portugal face a Espanha, ocorrida em 1640. Esta alvorada é protagonizada pela Banda Municipal de Santa Cruz e com uma encenação histórica da responsabilidade da Casa do Povo de Santa Cruz. Seguidamente há uma missa na Igreja Matriz da localidade assinalando a efeméride numa acção de graças pelo fim do domínio castelhano. Santa Cruz é o único local da Madeira onde ainda persiste o assinalar desta data histórica. É neste dia que também se inaugura a iluminação natalícia e os vários quadros alusivos à época na cidade de Santa Cruz.

MISSAS DO PARTO Antecedendo a Missa do Galo (celebrada na noite da véspera de Natal) e o dia de Natal, acontecem as célebres Missas do Parto, únicas em Portugal, que se realizam nove dias antes, representando simbolicamente os nove meses de gestação da Virgem Maria. Estas Missas do Parto, realizadas por toda a ilha, celebram-se às 6 horas da madrugada ocorrendo grande número de romeiros de outras freguesias, que vão alternando a Igreja da celebração e levam sinos e outros instrumentos, cantando no interior da igreja as diversas canções alusivas a esta época festiva. Depois da missa, romeiros e fiéis, reúnem-se no adro da Igreja onde vão cantando e comendo iguarias típicas do Natal como, por exemplo, canja, broas e bolos de mel, licores, cacau, etc.

NOITE DO MERCADO E MOSTRA DA TANGERINA (14 e 15 de dezembro) A tradição da Noite do Mercado nasceu no Funchal, no Mercado dos Lavradores, mas depressa foi reproduzida noutros concelhos da Madeira, ainda que no dia anterior a 23 de dezembro, data do evento da capital madeirense. Esta tradição remonta ao século XIX, mencionada em alguns jornais locais, na altura, como um evento no Mercado Dom Pedro V, onde actualmente se localiza a Alfândega do Funchal. É nesta noite que as pessoas vão ao mercado comprar as últimas verduras, flores, arranjos e iguarias para o Natal, aproveitando o ensejo para cantarem canções alusivas à época e festejarem com amigos e familiares o início da “Festa”. Como acontece noutras localidades da Madeira, Santa Cruz também tem a sua Noite do Mercado, a par com a Mostra da Tangerina (fruto típico da época natalícia na Madeira). Além de animação musical e de rua natalícia e tradicional no exterior do Mercado Municipal, com o grupo de folclore local e outros artistas, barraquinhas de comes e bebes e da exposição e venda de Tangerinas de produtores locais, dentro do mercado poderá encontrar à venda flores, frutas e outras iguarias e bebidas típicas do Natal, como a poncha madeirense e bolo do caco. Aqui animação fica a cargo de um grupo de cantares tradicionais madeirenses (repentistas), até de madrugada.

FESTA DE SANTO AMARO | 15 de janeiro

CHRISTMAS IN...

A Festa de Santo Amaro, realizada no dia 15 de janeiro, é a festa religiosa mais concorrida do Concelho de Santa Cruz, atraindo gente de toda a ilha. É simultaneamente a festa de encerramento da quadra natalícia e o primeiro arraial do ano da Madeira. Nos finais do séc. XIX e princípios do XX havia mesmo concorridas excursões de barco às festas de Santo Amaro, uma das principais da Madeira, trazendo gente de várias partes da ilha. Na véspera do dia do Santo realiza-se uma sentida procissão de velas, que leva o Santo da respectiva capela até à Igreja Matriz e no dia seguinte, na tarde, desta igreja para a capela. Nesta procissão podemos observar ex-votos em cera (como pernas, braços, cabeças, meninos, etc) que são levados pelos crentes embrulhados em panos de Bordado Madeira como agradecimento de alguma doença curada dessa parte do corpo ou como promessa para que o santo da devoção concedesse a melhoria.

O VARRER DOS ARMÁRIOS A tradição explica que é este dia de Santo Amaro que encerra a quadra natalícia na Madeira com o “varrer dos armários”, realizado por grupos que armados da tradicional e simbólica vassoura de urze (Erica platycodon ssp. maderincola), iam cantando de casa em casa para receber as últimas iguarias que houvessem sobrado da quadra festiva. Já nos inícios do séc. XX há notícias nos jornais da tradição local do varrer dos armários em Santa Cruz, por altura da Festa de Santo Amaro. Referia-se também que esta festa atraia grande número de romeiros, inclusive do norte da ilha, ombreando com a Festa do Senhor dos Milagres, em Machico ou com a Festa do Bom Jesus da Ponta Delgada.

Desde princípios dos anos 80, à Festa de Santo Amaro, a Câmara Municipal associou a realização de uma Feira Etnográfica para mostrar as tradições do concelho. Presentemente esta feira é organizada pelo Grupo de Romarias Antigas do Rochão, Camacha. Este grupo tem-se pautado pela preservação e divulgação das romarias típicas da Camacha, sem descurar os seus valores etnográficos, muitos deles identitários da Madeira em geral, pois estas serras outrora recônditas favoreceram a conservação dos costumes, objetos, trajes e cantares ancestrais. Na Feira Etnográfica “O Nosso Concelho” podemos encontrar quadros vivos com os seus trajes ancestrais, os seus usos e costumes que mostram o artesanato e gastronomia tradicional bem como objetos etnográficos hoje raros de encontrar.

FEIRA ETNOGRÁFICA “O Nosso Concelho”

- As in other locations of Madeira, Santa Cruz also has its market night (Chistmas in the Market), along with the Tangerine Feast (typical fruit of the Christmas season in Madeira). In addition to musical and traditional street animation outside the Municipal Market, with the local Folklore group and other artists, and eating and drinking stalls along with the exhibition and sale of Tangerinas from local producers, within the market you can find for sale flowers, fruits and other delicacies and drinks typical of Christmas, such as madeiran poncha and shard cake. Here animation is in charge of a group of traditional Madeiran singing, until dawn.

SANTO AMARO FEAST (January, 11th to 15th) - On january 15th the municipality of Santa Cruz pays tribute to its patron saint in a very lively religious festivity, which marks the end of the Christmas holidays. - On the eve of the holy day there is a felt procession of candles, which takes the Saint of the respective chapel to the Mother Church and the next day, in the afternoon, of this church to the chapel. In this

procession we can observe ex-vows in wax (such as legs, arms, heads, boys, etc.) that are taken by believers wrapped in Madeira embroidery cloths as a thank you of some disease cured of this part of the body or as a promise for the saint of devotion to grant improvement. It should be noted that the Chapel and the Church, are exquisitely adorned with several orchid-cobbling species (Paphiopedilum), typical of this time, which make the perk of visitors.

- ETNOGRAPHIC FAIR "Our Municipality" Since the early 1980s, the Feast of Santo Amaro, the City Council associated the realization of an Ethnographic Fair to show the traditions of the municipality. At present this fair is organized by the Group of Old Pilgrimages of Rochão, Camacha. This group has been guided by the preservation and dissemination of the typical pilgrimages of Camacha, without neglecting their ethnographic values, many of them identity wood in general, because these once recôndite saws favored the conservation of customs, objects, costumes and ancestral singing. At the Ethnographic Fair "Our Municipality" you can find living frames with their ancestral costumes, their uses and customs that show traditional crafts and gastronomy as well as ethnographic objects today rare to find.

The Madeira Adventure Club promotes the 11th edition of the Madeira Orienteering Meeting (MOM), a competition integrated in the Portuguese Orienteering Cup calendar consisting of three main competitions, including a middle-distance race in mountain area and a sprint race held in the centre of Funchal. This event is a challenge for sports in nature, where, for 3 days, anyone can participate in the orienteering trials, living a new experience, full of adventure and suitable for all ages.

O Clube Aventura da Madeira organiza a 11.ª edição do Madeira Orienteering Meeting (MOM), que irá decorrer nas serras de Santa Cruz e na zona de Ponta de São Lourenço, Caniçal e Machico. A "Festa" Madeirense está de volta!

s tradições da região conjugam-se na perfeição com um programa rico e extenso em manifestações de caráter cultural, etnográfico e artístico que abrange todo o mês de dezembro, e que se prolonga até ao Dia de Reis.

Na Madeira o Natal é uma das quadras mais festejada pela grande maioria da população, sendo a principal festa da tradição madeirense, celebrada desde o início do povoamento. A celebração e a vivência do Natal na região resulta da herança dos povoadores portugueses, à qual o povo madeirense associou um rico folclore cristão e elementos profanos.

Na etnografia madeirense o Natal é tradicionalmente conhecido e designado como a “Festa”, que só termina depois do dia de Reis (6 de janeiro), ou, em algumas localidades da Ilha, no dia de Santo Amaro (15 de janeiro), depois de realizado o “Varrer dos Armários”, desmontados os presépios tradicionais e demais decorações típicas da época. Uma experiência única, de aroma docicado, a canela, tangerina, mel e pinheiro... Um pouco por toda a Ilha, como dizem os madeirenses...

Programação 1 de Dezembro a 6 de Janeiro | Luzes de Natal O dia 1 de Dezembro é a data oficial em que se ligam as iluminações de natal (que permanecem ligadas até meados de Janeiro), seguido de grandes celebrações, eventos culturais, concertos e exposições que acontecem por toda a cidade pelo Natal. A Ilha da Madeira é verdadeiramente mágica e inesquecível nesta altura do ano.

16 a 24 de Dezembro - MISSAS DO PARTO Quem é que se levanta as 6 da manha para ir à missa no Natal? Os madeirenses! Estas missas são únicas no País, sendo um costume antigo e documentado, pelo menos, desde início do século XVIII, e são celebradas na maioria das igrejas da ilha. A Missa do Parto é uma das principais devoções da tradição de Natal da Madeira; é a celebração dos nove meses de gravidez da Virgem Maria, começando por isso 9 dias antes do Natal cedo às 6 da manhã do dia 16 de Dezembro e terminando ao nascer do sol de dia 24 de Dezembro, acompanhadas de canções tradicionais. Depois da missa, no adro da igreja os crentes reúnem-se para ouvirem os cânticos, acompanhados por grupos de cordas, acordeões e castanholas e onde não faltam os "despiques" a que se segue o "mata-bicho" com as aguardentes, licores, broas e bolos.Em algumas freguesias da Madeira, como Câmara de Lobos e Camacha, mantém-se a tradição das bandas filarmónicas, acompanhadas por outros tocadores de instrumentos, como castanholas, bombos, braguinhas ou acordeões, irem de porta em porta, numa sinfonia alegre, despertar os habitantes e apressá-los para este ritual típico da nossa terra.

23 de Dezembro - NOITE DO MERCADO A Noite do Mercado realiza-se no dia 23 de dezembro, quando os madeirenses efetuam as últimas compras de Natal e é nesta azáfama que melhor se sente o espírito da "Festa", designação conferida pelo povo madeirense ao Natal. Esta tradição remonta ao século XIX, mencionada em alguns jornais locais, na altura, como um evento no Mercado Dom Pedro V, hoje a atual Alfândega do Funchal. Em 1940 foi aberto Mercado dos Lavradores, no local onde hoje

funciona, e, partir desta altura, manteve-se um período de abertura nos dias 23 e 24 de dezembro, para que se pudessem adquirir produtos típicos da quadra - pinheiros, fruta, legumes – sempre nas zonas circundantes. Os habitantes deslocam-se até ao Mercado dos Lavradores onde as ruas circundantes, que se encontram encerradas ao trânsito, são ocupadas por diversos postos de venda abertos durante toda a noite. Estes apresentam variados produtos regionais como flores, arbustos, frutas, legumes, doces, sandes de carne vinho-e-alhos e bebidas típicas, como a poncha. Ao cair da noite decorre a maior atração do dia, um espetáculo de cânticos tradicionais de Natal onde os habitantes locais assumem o papel de verdadeiros artistas. 24 de dezembro | MISSA DO GALO

NATAL NO FUNCHAL Na quadra mais aguardada do ano, os espaços públicos de todos os municípios da Região são arranjados para o Natal, enchendo-se de luz, cor e elementos decorativos, que incluem presépios de grandes dimensões e outras representações religiosas e pagãs. É com a inauguração das iluminações decorativas nas ruas da baixa citadina do Funchal, durante o mês de dezembro, que se inicia o programa das Festas de Natal e de Fim de Ano da Madeira, a decorrer oficialmente entre os dias 1 de dezembro 2019 a 6 de janeiro 2020.

Quanto à vertente religiosa da véspera de Natal, destaca-se a celebração da Missa do Galo no dia 24 de dezembro, pela meia-noite, na maioria das igrejas da Ilha. Os templos enchem-se de fiéis, para assistir à celebração litúrgica do nascimento do Menino Jesus. Em quase todas as paróquias realizam-se autos de Natal e romagens de pastores, onde são representadas cenas evangélicas com encenações simples, sobre as profecias, a anunciação do anjo, o Nascimento e a adoração dos pastores. A Missa do Galo na Sé Catedral do Funchal é especialmente celebrada pelo Bispo de Funchal e passa na televisão. A igreja enche-se rapidamente pelo que se quiser um lugar na frente terá de lá chegar bem cedo.

28 de dezembro | VOLTA À CIDADE DO FUNCHAL Organizado pela Associação de Atletismo da Madeira, a Volta à Cidade do Funchal (Corrida de São Silvestre) é uma das mais antigas provas desportivas do género em Portugal e na Europa. Esta competição que tem vindo a atrair para a Região inúmeros atletas do panorama nacional e internacional, enche a capital madeirense de muita adrenalina e animação. Se procuram adrenalina e emoção, juntem-se aos milhares de desportistas, profissionais e amadores, que participam na tradicional “Volta à cidade do Funchal”. O circuito é de 5.850 metros e percorre as principais ruas da capital. Se preferir um ritmo mais lento, a caminhada coletiva “Marcha da Saúde”, é uma boa alternativa. As receitas desta Marcha revertem para a solidariedade social.

31 de Dezembro - Fim-de-Ano / Noite de São Silvestre O espetáculo de fogo-de-artifício da Noite de São Silvestre tem uma duração de cerca de oito minutos e está distribuído por diversos postos de queima de fogo localizados no anfiteatro do Funchal, na orla marítima e baixa citadina, no mar e um posto na Ilha do Porto Santo. Este espetáculo grandioso que é um dos mais importantes cartazes turísticos da Madeira, foi reconhecido internacionalmente, pelo Livro de Recordes do Guiness no ano de 2006, como "O maior espetáculo de fogo-de-artifício do Mundo".

Na noite de 5 para 6 de janeiro cantam-se os Reis em casa dos vizinhos, e um pouco por toda a parte. É neste espirito que procura recriar a tradição popular dos cantares tradicionais madeirenses que se faziam neste dia, porta à porta, em diversas localidades da RAM que a Associação de Casas do Povo da Região Autónoma da Madeira organiza e produz no auditório do Jardim Municipal do Funchal, o espetáculo musical "Cantar os Reis", marcando assim o encerramento das festividades de Fim de Ano.

Legend of St. Sylvester A Lenda de

São Silvestre

On the last night of the year, the Virgin Mary appeared in the skies over the ocean. That’s when St. Sylvester talked to her. The Virgin Mary explained to him the reason for her sadness: she recalled the lovely Atlantis, sunken by God as a punishment on its inhabitants. While she was speaking, Our Lady wept tears of sadness and compassion. St. Sylvester noticed that they were not tears but real pearls. One of these tears fell on the spot where the extraordinary Atlantis once existed and which today lies Madeira Island, appropriately dubbed as the Pearl of the Atlantic. For a long time, old folks used to say that on the night of St. Sylvester, at the strike of twelve, a fantastic vision of light and colors light up the skies spreading a fascinating perfume in the air. Locals have kept this tradition alive in the famous New Year's Eve festivities using a fireworks display to celebrate the Night of St. Sylvester.

Reza a lenda que na última noite do ano, estando a Virgem Maria debruçada dos céus sobre o oceano, São Silvestre veio-lhe falar. Nossa Senhora confiou-lhe a razão da sua tristeza: lembrava-se da bela Atlântida, afundada por Deus para castigo dos seus habitantes.

Enquanto falava, Nossa Senhora deixava cair lágrimas de tristeza e de misericórdia. São Silvestre reparou então que as suas lágrimas não eram lágrimas mas pérolas autênticas. Uma dessas lágrimas foi cair no local originário da extraordinária Atlântida, dando origem à ilha da Madeira que ficou conhecida como a Pérola do Atlântico. Dizem os antigos que, durante muito tempo, na noite de S. Silvestre, quando batiam as doze badaladas, surgia nos céus uma visão de luz e cores fantásticas que deixavam no ar um perfume estonteante. Com o passar dos anos essa visão desapareceu, mas o povo arranjou forma de a manter, através do fogo-de-artifício das famosas Festas de Fim de Ano que enaltece as celebrações da Noite de S. Silvestre, como também é conhecida a noite de Fim-de-Ano na Madeira.

The village, which receives thousands of tourists and residents annually, offers tents for sale of homemade liqueurs and several houses that make known the traditional handicrafts, such as the “brinquinho” playground (typical musical instrument), the boots of villain and the barrets of Ears. -However, the main attraction is the nativity scene, which represents Madeiran orography, with its mountains; “poios”, with stone walls, and plantations of small lettuces and cabbages; water courses with their springs; levadas (water courses) and water streams and some typical vegetables of the Island. Scenes of everyday life and popular traditions appear: the toil of farmers; the feast pig; the high areas of Madeira, with its white houses and green windows, around the parish church or sea-facing; the philharmonic band, the folklore group and religious processions, among others.

The English Church of Funchal also boosts some Christmas Music shows. In the Gardens of the Palace of São Lourenço, you can watch several concerts of classical music, jazz, mandolins, guitars and the traditional Madeiran cordophones. In the Main Cathedral (Sé do Funchal), do not miss the fabulous Christmas Choir Festival of the Madeiran Orfeão. The End of the Year Concert, of the Classical Orchestra of Madeira, takes place in the beautiful Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater and is an excellent way to end the year.

– Nos anos 80 do séc. XX, começou a construir-se no centro da cidade, por iniciativa de Maria Augusta Nóbrega (1929-2007), uma aldeia etnográfica, com o objetivo de recriar, dentro da cidade, os hábitos, as tradições e o modo de viver dos madeirenses em tempos mais recuados.

A aldeia, que recebe anualmente milhares de turistas e residentes, apresenta barracas para venda de licores caseiros e várias casinhas que dão a conhecer o artesanato tradicional, como o brinquinho (instrumento musical típico), as botas de vilão e os barretes de orelhas. - No entanto, a principal atração é o presépio, que representa a orografia madeirense, com as suas montanhas; poios, com muralhas de pedra, e plantações de pequenas alfaces e couves; cursos de água com as suas nascentes; levadas e veredas, ribeiras e alguma verdura típica da Ilha. Surgem figura das cenas do quotidiano e das tradições populares: a labuta dos lavradores; o porco da Festa; as zonas altas da Madeira, com as suas casas brancas e janelas verdes, em redor da igreja paroquial ou viradas ao mar; a banda filarmónica, o grupo de folclore e as procissões religiosas, entre outras.



Música e Bailados

- As canções de Natal enaltecem o espírito e reavivam memórias de outros Natais. Na placa central da Avenida Arriaga do Funchal concentram-se grande parte dos concertos alusivos à época. Anime-se com as bandas filarmónicas, grupos folclóricos, clarinetes, bandolins, acordeões, guitarras e coros infantis. - No Teatro Baltazar Dias podem ainda assistir a belíssimos bailados e a concertos memoráveis da Orquestra Clássica da Madeira. A Igreja Inglesa do Funchal dinamiza também alguns espetáculos de Música de Natal. Nos Jardins do Palácio de São Lourenço, poderão assistir a diversos concertos de música clássica, jazz, bandolins, guitarras e dos tradicionais cordofones madeirenses. Na Sé Catedral, não percam o fabuloso Festival de Coros de Natal, do Orfeão Madeirense. O Concerto de Fim do Ano, da Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, decorre no belíssimo Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias e é uma excelente forma de terminar o ano.

SABIA QUE...? A passagem de ano de 2006/2007 e o seu espectáculo pirotécnico valeu à Macedo´s Pirotecnia um lugar no GUINESS WORLD OF RECORDS , como o “Maior espectáculo Pirotécnico do Mundo. Uma elipse de fogo-de-artifício de seis quilómetros de extensão e 2,7 quilómetros de largura em torno da cidade do Funchal assinalou, à meia-noite, a entrada de 2007 na Região Autónoma da Madeira.

Dezenas de milhares de pessoas, entre locais, turistas (a ocupação hoteleira era de 94 por cento num parque de 29 mil camas), passageiros e tripulantes em trânsito nos oito paquetes que escalaram o porto do Funchal (cerca de 10 mil) assistiram a este espectáculo, numa noite de luar e temperatura amena.

A CAPELA DE SANTO AMARO EM SANTA CRUZ A Capela de Santo Amaro foi construída nos inícios do séc. XVI por iniciativa do povo em devoção do santo protetor dos que estão prestes a se afogar nas águas tumultuosas (das aluviões e do mar) tendo sido reconstruída nos inícios séc. XX. Segundo reza a hagiologia do santo o frade Amaro, nascido em Roma e falecido em 584, caminhou sobre as águas resgatando um irmão monge de um rio turbulento, evitando o seu afogamento. Como o S. Amaro era o patrono do mar, os pescadores de Santa Cruz costumavam fazer preces quando o peixe escasseava e também quando havia tempestades. Os moradores da vila de Santa Cruz também recorriam ao Santo sempre que havia enchentes das ribeiras. Foram os homens do mar, que outrora constituíam um número considerável em Santa Cruz, que contribuíam para a manutenção e conservação da capela. Da construção inicial, apenas subsiste o portal quebrado em cantaria rija regional, de um só colunelo e uma arquivolta, ou pertencendo estas, talvez, a um portal neomanuelino, cópia do que então lá existiria e a pia de água-benta em cantaria, com a face em ponta de diamante, característico da gramática Manuelina. A fachada da capela é já de feição barroca, terminando em empena de frontão curvo interrompido, assim como os remates da torre sineira. O retábulo-mor é de estilo tardo-barroco ou já mesmo protoneoclássico, tripartido, branco e dourado, com nicho central emoldurado por pilastras e rematado com frontão curvo interrompido, devendo datar dos princípios do séc. XX. O Santo Amaro que está num nicho, com porta de vidro, é uma imagem de vulto, dourada e estofada, que deve datar do séc. XVIII. De notar duas jarras obtidas a partir de duas balas trazidas por um antigo pároco, José Manuel, natural desta freguesia que foi capelão do corpo expedicionário do exército português na Primeira Guerra Mundial.

Tradições e Curiosidades A “Festa” em Santa Cruz A LAPINHA E O PRESÉPIO DE ESCADINHA Em toda a ilha, e também em Santa Cruz, há duas formas tradicionais de fazer o presépio, que podemos encontrar, orgulhosamente, em qualquer casa da Madeira. A lapinha é um presépio que se inspira na orografia acidentada da ilha, onde não faltam as cascatas e os lagos, e que utiliza também, na sua decoração, elementos botânicos endémicos como o alegracampo (Semele maderensis), fetos ou cabrinhas (Davallia canariensis), ensaiões (Aeonium glandulosum), musgos e outras plantas exóticas, como uma determinada espécie de orquídeassapatinhos-(Paphiopedilum sp), babosas (Aloe vera) e junquilhos (Narcissus jonquilla), com o seu intenso perfume. Distribuídos pelo presépio podemos encontrar as casinhas típicas vernaculares da ilha, as igrejas alcandoradas, os minuciosos poios (socalcos) cultivados, as serpenteantes veredas e levadinhas, os pastores, os animais e as diferentes profissões ancestrais, os usos e costumes tradicionais, tudo misturado com as figuras bíblicas do Natal, como se o Menino Jesus tivesse nascido na ilha! O povo partia da realidade paisagística que conhecia para elaborar o seu presépio. Também por este presépio de rochinha podemos encontrar maçãs, laranjas, tangerinas, brindeiros (pão de casa minúsculo), vasos de searinhas (recipientes com sementes germinadas de trigo), de milho, de lentilhas, etc, que simbolicamente pediam ao Menino Jesus que trouxesse um ano abundante ao mesmo tempo que agradecia o frutífero ano findante. O presépio de escadinha é outro presépio tradicional madeirense, mas neste o Menino Jesus surge entronado numa espécie de camarim. A representação de Jesus Cristo menino preside no último degrau sob um arquinho de flores ou de alegra-campo. Nos outros patamares

encontram-se também as searinhas, as verduras, as maças, os brindeiros, as tangerinas, etc, bem como as figuras do presépio. A ladear o Menino Jesus, geralmente coberto com um vestido de bordado Madeira, jarras de junquilhos ou sapatinhos. Todo o conjunto é armado sobre uma mesa coberta com uma toalha de bordado Madeira ou arrendada.



O Dia de Natal

O dia de Natal na Madeira é tradicionalmente um dia de ócio, normalmente passado em casa, consagrado à família, e destinado a degustar as diversas iguarias preparadas nos dias anteriores. Ao almoço, apresenta-se uma mesa farta, com produtos regionais, carne de porco em vinho e alhos e diversas sobremesas, doces. Esta tradição é tão arreigada que, num passado bem recente, não havia nenhum restaurante aberto em toda a ilha, restringindo-se apenas aos restaurantes dos hotéis. Todo o comércio e cafés encontravam-se encerrados durante todo o dia. As ruas estavam desertas.
