The Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira organizes the Port Santo Nature Trail, renewing the format of this event that takes place on March 7 on the golden island.

The ‘Festa dos Compadres’ marks the opening of the Carnival season in Madeira, a tradition going back to more than 50 years, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Santana, to be held on February 15th and 16th. This is an event known for its originality, marked by its gigantic figures who roam the streets of this quiet town located on the north of the Madeira island, in a parade full of humour, lots of colour and joy. The Casa do Povo of Faial and the Farmers Association promotes the annual Regional Custard Apple Exhibition (Exposição Regional da Anona), in partnership with the Regional Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources and the Municipal Council of Santana. The Porto Santo Nature Trail consists of four races that will cover the island from leagues to leagues: the main 42.3 km, the secondary with 21.9 km, one smaller with 8.9 km and also an extra race directed to a younger audience - "Kids Trail do Porto Santo" (KTPS). February 19th to March 1st

The Carnival party calendar is rich and diversified, as themes, colours and the overall spirit of fantasy and fun are widespread across the Madeiran villages. You just have to let yourself go with the flow and make mandatory stops in several municipalities to watch the lively carnivalesque parades. In Madeira, the Carnival season is experienced in a constant festive atmosphere, both with official initiatives and those of a more spontaneous character, deep-rooted in Madeiran tradition, with joy and cheerfulness prevailing in the streets, establishments and private homes, between February 19th and March 1st.

PROGRAM

Saturday - 22 February nd

On Saturday night, the colourful and vibrant float parade takes thousands of visitors and residents to the Center of Funchal. This is the main attraction of Madeira Carnival. Over a thousand revellers participate dressed in eye-catching costumes in addition to a dozen exquisitely decorated floats. The parade is opened with music: the colourful joy and the rhythm of the costumed troupes are contagious. They parade enthusiastically to the sound of selected songs that were choreographed and rehearsed throughout the year, overflowing the public with their joy.

Tuesday- 25th February The “Trapalhão” Parade (slapstick parade), held on Shrove Tuesday, represents the spontaneous parade that originally occurred on Rua da Carreira. Participation is open to all, both national and foreign citizens, either independently or as a group. The participants’ creativity knows no boundaries and spans from social and political satire, to traditional themes, or simple character disguise. Whether you watch or participate in this parade, you will undoubtedly be able to share moments of good humour and interact with the public.

Compadres Feast - February, 15th and 16th The Carnival celebrations begin with “Festa dos Compadres” (Compadres Feast), which takes place in Santana. The nature of this traditional festivity is part of passage from winter to spring ritual and the renewal of the local community. The action unfolds in a clear antagonism between male and female local residents, well represented through the satirical male and female dolls made by the participants. The feast focuses on the judgement of the "compadre" and the judgement of the "comadre", during which social criticism is done towards the events and activities of individuals and community institutions that took place over the year. On Friday morning, prior to Carnival, about a thousand young revellers from various schools and kindergartens of Funchal, all in disguise, parade through the city center (Avenida Arriaga), in an atmosphere of Carnival liveliness.

A música abre o cortejo: a alegria colorida e o ritmo das trupes fantasiadas têm o dom de contagiar. Todos desfilam com entusiasmo ao som de músicas selecionadas, com coreografias treinadas ao longo do ano, fazendo transbordar a sua alegria para o público.

Festa dos Compadres – 15 e 16 de fevereiro As celebrações do Carnaval iniciam-se com a "Festa dos Compadres", que acontece em Santana. Esta festividade de carácter tradicional insere-se nos rituais de passagem do Inverno para a Primavera e de regeneração da comunidade local. A ação desenvolve-se num claro antagonismo entre os residentes locais do sexo masculino e os do sexo feminino, patente na confeção de bonecos e bonecas com um carácter satírico. A festa tem como objetivo o julgamento do "compadre" e o julgamento da "comadre", durante o qual são feitas críticas sociais aos acontecimentos e atuações dos indivíduos e instituições da comunidade durante o ano. "Assaltos" de Carnaval Manifestação tradicional do Carnaval da Madeira são os denominados "assaltos", que decorrem durante o tempo que antecede o Carnaval. Estes eram realizados por grupos que, mascarados "assaltavam" a casa de amigos e conhecidos, com o intuito de lhes comer as iguarias da época: os tradicionais "sonhos" e "malassadas". Estas incursões terminavam sempre em festa nas casas particulares. Esta forma de convívio ainda se faz, embora em pequeno número, tendo sido substituída pelos "Assaltos" combinados. Estes são marcados antecipadamente e, agora, são os assaltantes que levam as iguarias para os convívios.

Festas Temáticas As unidades de diversão noturna oferecem, também durante o tempo que antecede o Carnaval, diversas noites temáticas, como a "Noite dos Hippies" e a "Noite dos Travestis", convidando os seus utentes a se divertirem disfarçados com uma máscara desse tema. Existem vários espaços que aderem sem hesitar à tradição carnavalesca.

Carnaval Solidário A baixa da cidade é novamente brindada com mais uma iniciativa de animação que prima pela originalidade e criatividade. Com uma energia contagiante, centenas de foliões da Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Funchal desfilam pela Avenida Arriaga até ao Jardim Municipal, onde se realiza um espetáculo.

Carnaval das Crianças Durante este período, pais e crianças empenham-se em confecionar as máscaras que estas levam, depois, para a escola. Na manhã de sexta-feira que antecede o dia de Carnaval, cerca de um milhar de pequenos foliões provenientes de diversas escolas e creches do Funchal, desfilam, disfarçados, pelo centro da cidade (Avenida Arriaga), num ambiente de animação carnavalesca.

- Vegetable oil for deep-frying - Confectioner’s sugar - Cinnamon - Madeira Sugarcane honey

3/8 cup Sugar 2 cups Oil 1/4 cup Rum 3 cups Water

Preparation: The pumpkin bakes in a pan with low water with a little cinnamon on stick, lemon peel and salt. Let it cool, drain the water and grate (taking out cinnamon and lemon). Pour the pumpkin with the flour, add 3 or 4 whole eggs. Take it overnight. Bake in oil to balls, made with a spoon.

Ingredients - 1/2 cup water - 1 tablespoon butter - Pinch of salt - 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour - 4 large eggs

1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water, butter, and salt to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the flour and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon to form a ball. Take the pan off the heat and place it in the sink half filled with water. 2. After cooling the mixture a bit, beat in the eggs, one by one. Continue beating to aerate the dough. When ready, use a spoon to fill the dough and deep-fry it in hot oil (360°F/180°C) until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels. 3. To serve, sprinkle the fried dough with a mixture of confectioner’s sugar and cinnamon. Serve warm with Madeira sugarcane honey.

O Carnaval na Madeira tem história, remontando aos finais do século XIX, quando as ruas se enchiam de pessoas disfarçadas com roupas velhas e a face pintada de fuligem, contrastando com os bailes privados, cujas máscaras dos participantes se inspiravam em personalidades reconhecidas, profissões ou objectos. No século XX os festejos de rua tomaram proporções tão negativas, que as autoridades viram-se obrigadas a lançar algumas proibições. Contudo, os bailes privados mantiveram-se e acabaram até por crescer, com a abertura de salões de festas como no Ateneu Comercial, Teatro Municipal e no Solar D. Mécia.

O mais comum era ver pequenos grupos de mascarados, a desfilar pelas ruas, de forma ordeira e pacífica. As pessoas criavam os seus próprios disfarces, pinturas, máscaras, travessuras e assim saíam à rua, num espírito de festa e de brincadeira. As famílias faziam malassadas (espécie de fritos de abóbora ou batata doce, um género de sonhos mais denso) com mel de cana sacarina e era tradição oferecer aos convidados e aos mascarados. Celebravam-se também bailes temáticos, de acordo com os acontecimentos sociais daquela época. Com o crescimento do Turismo, após a década de 70, os bailes temáticos passaram a ser organizados nos hotéis mais icónicos do Funchal, como o Savoy, o Reid’s Palace, entre outros. Os cortejos de Carnaval estenderam-se depois às principais ruas do Funchal.

In Madeira, Carnival was always celebrated with great revelry. Before the 1970s, Rua da Carreira, in Funchal, was the scene of a procession alluding to Carnival, which was organized almost spontaneously, where Carnival was celebrated in a somewhat anarchic way and was not always peaceful, because egg battles took place and flour, as well as outbreaks of conflict.

The three explorers had led the first settlement, along with their respective families, a small group of minor nobility, people of modest conditions and some prisoners, who could be trusted to work the lands. To gain the minimum conditions for the development of agriculture, they had to rough-hew a part of the dense forest of Laurisilva and to construct a large number of canals (levadas), since in some parts of the island there was excess water, while in others water was scarce.

In 1617, Algerian pirates, having enslaved Europeans along the Mediterranean coasts, captured 1,200 men and women in Porto Santo. After the 17th century, as sugar production shifted to Brazil, São Tomé and Príncipe and elsewhere, Madeira's most important product became its wine.

Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911), botanist and explorer, was born on 30 June 1817 at Halesworth, Suffolk, England.

Life´s Work The expedition, commanded by James Clark Ross, sailed in 1839 in two ships, Erebus and Terror: Hooker was assistant surgeon and naturalist in the former. They visited Madeira in that same year and anchored there for 10 days. Other places of interest included Ascension, St Helena, the Cape, Kerguelen, Van Diemen's Land, New Zealand, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands, and sailed along a vast extent of the coast of Antarctica. The expedition returned to England in 1843. The results of Hooker's botanical explorations of these lands were published under the general title The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage, in three large and important volumes: Flora Antarctica (1844-47), Flora Novae-Zelandiae (1853-55) and Flora Tasmaniae (1855-60). These works, splendidly illustrated by the botanical artist, Walter Hood Fitch, are distinguished by Hooker's insight into morphological problems and by the importance of his theories developed in the introductions.

Education At 15 he began to attend classes at the University of Glasgow, at first in classics and mathematics and later in medicine (M.D., 1839). He already had a wide knowledge of botany based on work in his father's herbarium and on extensive plant-collecting in the British Isles. His degree enabled him to join the Naval Medical Service and to accompany a scientific expedition to the Antarctic.

The books, reprinted in 1963, remain indispensable for the study of plants of these southern lands; they are also especially significant because they belong to a critical period in the history of biology. Darwin's views on evolution had long been known to Hooker: their friendship dated from 1839.

Hooker was a pioneer plant geographer. After returning from the Antarctic and working on fossil plants as a member of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, he sought an opportunity to study the vegetation of mountains in the tropics. In 1847, helped by a small grant from the Treasury, he sailed for India and other nearby lands.

Hooker returned to England in 1851 where he married Frances Harriet from whom they had four sons and three daughters. In 1855 he was appointed assistant director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, and in 1865 succeeded his father as director. Hooker also engaged in botanical exploration in Lebanon in 1860, Morocco and the Atlas Mountains in 1871. Three years later his wife died. In 1876 he married Hyacinth from whom they had two sons from the .

Hooker's outstanding achievements earned him many degrees and honors from many British universities and from learned societies in Britain and the Continent. In 1885 he retired and made his home at Windlesham, near Sunningdale, Berkshire, where he continued to work on the Indian flora and on the genus Impatiens (Balsam). He died at his home on 10 December 1911 and was buried in the churchyard of St Anne's Anglican Church at Kew Green.

The Fitness Team Group, originally from Gaula, under the

coordination of Carina Pestana, is one of the latest carnival troupes to parade in the great procession of Carnival of Funchal. This year is his third participation in this great event full of color, rhythm and animation.

Mas foi em 2018, que Carina Pestana e o seu grupo concretizaram um sonho, o de desfilar no sambódromo do Funchal. Ao grupo juntou-se Mário Ramos, o responsável por toda a idealização e design do projeto, e o resultado foi um grande espetáculo de cor e folia, com ritmos contagiantes e cheio de glamour e brilho.

"Madeira - 6 centuries of joy" was the generic theme of the 2018 edition of the Madeiran carnival, and it was precisely its debut at The Madeira Carnival, where they went to represent all splendor, sea voyages, natural landscapes, sugar season and art flemish in a period of production of "white gold", with the theme "Earth in Sight". In 2019, they presented themselves with the theme "O Baile" (taking into account the theme launched by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture of Madeira - "600 Years to the Discovery of Revelry"), in a representation of the old and palatial dances, giving primacy to the black and white colors, but also presenting facts where, among other colors, purple, blue colors were seen, among others, as well as feathers, sparkles and stonestores. The group went to the streets with 190 elements, aged between 14 and 65 years old.

"Madeira - 6 séculos de alegria" foi o tema genérico da edição de 2018 do carnaval madeirense, e foi precisamente a sua estreia no Carnaval da Madeira, onde foram para representar todo o esplendor, as viagens marítimas, paisagens naturais, a época do açúcar e a arte flamenga num período de produção do “ouro branco”, com o tema “Terra à Vista”. Em 2019, apresentaram-se com o tema “O Baile” (tendo em conta o tema lançado pela Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Cultura da Madeira – “600 Anos à Descoberta da Folia”), numa representação dos bailes antigos e palacianos, dando primazia às cores preta e branca, mas também apresentando fatos onde, entre outras cores, se viam cores púrpuras, azuis, entre outras, além de plumas, brilhos e pedrarias. O grupo saiu à rua com 190 elementos, com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 65 anos.

Since 2010, the group participates in the Madeira Carnival, parading through several parishes (Funchal, Caniço, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos etc.), bringing elements of all ages, a percussion band, allegorical car and original themes. But it was in 2018 that Carina Pestana and her group fulfilled a dream, to parade at the sambadrome of Funchal. To the group joined Mário Ramos, responsible for all the idealization and design of the project, and the result was a great spectacle of color and revelry, with contagious rhythms and full of glamour and brilliance.

Madeira Island Magazine – Como começou o grupo Fitness Team?

O Sonho do Carnaval ! Fitness Team

arina Pestana é a responsável por toda a coordenação e coreografia do grupo, sendo Mário Ramos o mentor do projeto e responsável pelo design dos figurinos (e coreografia também), e a costureira do projeto Rosário Canada é a coordenadora da equipa de costureiras, cujas mãos habilidosas dão vida à criatividade dos figurinos desenhados e tecidos e materiais escolhidos pelo projeto. Atualmente o grupo conta com 130 foliões para desfilar no Funchal com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 60 anos mas nas freguesias são cerca de 180 pois levam também crianças e adolescentes.

Em 2020 o Fitness Team leva ao sambódromo do Funchal o tema "O SONHO". Este projeto pretende recriar um mundo idílico, um devaneio, onde tudo é possível, assente na dualidade dia versus noite, onde o Sonho poderá estar sempre presente. Um mundo fantástico que não obedece a regras. Apenas se rege através da imaginação, criatividade e a liberdade, tornando-se num cenário ilusório. Neste sonho encontramos personagens míticas, Fénix, Unicórnios, Fadas, Deusas, Anjos, aliados a vários elementos/ símbolos, como é o caso do arco-íris, que nos transportam para outra realidade. A nível cromático é um projecto muito colorido, onde as cores predominantes são o prata, dourado, preto, roxo, azuis, verdes, amarelo, laranja e vermelho.

A MIM falou com Carina Pestana e com Mário Ramos, para saber um pouco mais sobre este projeto.

Carina Pestana - Foi interessante o início do grupo, pois não imaginava nunca que iria crescer desta forma e nao fazia parte dos planos fazer as actividades que fazemos hoje em dia. Sempre estive ligada à área do desporto, na escola sempre segui a área de Desporto e amava e amo o Mundo Fitness. Depois surgiu a oportunidade de me especializar nessa área e foi o que eu fiz sem pensar duas vezes. Comecei a dar aulas em 2004 na Casa de Povo de Gaula, entidade à qual o grupo pertence até à data. Iniciei numa sala muito pequenina e com poucas condições mas foi um começo que fica para sempre nas minhas memórias. Foi um sucesso as aulas, cresciam de vento em popa até que senti necessidade de me expandir. Foi quando surgiu a oportunidade de começar a dar aulas no Caniço, após vários pedidos de muitas pessoas. E foi a escolha acertada, hoje em dia o nosso maior público é do canico. O grupo foi crescendo e eis que surge o convite para fazer uma pequena demonstração das nossas aulas numa festa. Foi um sucesso e desde então temos sido convidados para fazer vários eventos, entre eles arraiais, eventos culturais etc...e sempre fizemos e continuamos a fazer muita animação de carácter solidário com o intuito de incutir a prática do exercício físico nas escolas e nos lares. O percurso do FITNESS TEAM foi interessante pois não cresceu logo, sem planos nenhuns, foi crescendo aos poucos e fomos abraçando cada desafio com toda a nossa energia e alegria e tem sido muito bom a experiência. Em 2010 numa conversa de café, surgiu a ideia de formarmos uma trupe de Carnaval. Começou com uma brincadeira pois queríamos muito sair à rua com as nossas coreografias e nos divertir principalmente. E foi o que aconteceu, fizemos nesse ano o carnaval em 2 semanas com 35 elementos (actualmente alguns elementos dessa altura ainda desfilam connosco). E o tema desse ano foi exatamente FITNESS TEAM. Eis o nome do grupo, fazia todo o sentido, praticávamos Fitness e sempre fomos uma TEAM desde sempre, todos prontos a ajudar para o sucesso do grupo com amor à camisola. Nunca me irei esquecer de todos aqueles que nos ajudaram a crescer. E foi assim que começou a grande aventura do FITNESS TEAM no carnaval.

MIM – Já participam no Carnaval das freguesias desde 2010, desfilando por várias freguesias como Caniço, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos. Como surgiu este sonho do grupo criar um projeto para desfilar no cortejo de Carnaval do Funchal? CP - O sonho estava lá sempre que fazíamos Carnaval das freguesias, mas tínhamos noção que não tínhamos

condições nem a experiência para entrar nessa grande aventura. Os anos foram passando e em 2017 eis que surge a oportunidade para concorrer para o Grande Desfile no Funchal. Fizemos o projecto e foi-nos negado. Aprendi muito nessa altura mas não desisti, sabia que a nossa altura ia lá chegar e é aqui que entra o Mário Ramos, o nosso designer de eleição. Foi graças ao seu talento que alcançamos todos este grande sonho. Tínhamos noção que o projeto tinha que ser fantástico e foi o que fizemos em 2018. Um sonho tornado realidade e já vamos para o 3 ano de Carnaval na Avenida. Estamos muito felizes com o resultado, mas procuramos sempre fazer mais e melhor.

MIM – Quais são os vossos objetivos para o desfile de Carnaval deste ano, o que vão apresentar nesta edição é que balanço faz do projeto até agora? CP - Os nossos objetivos são simples. Fazer o melhor que sabemos, marcar pela diferença pois temos um grupo coeso

que dança connosco o ano inteiro, todos se conhecem e isso é muito importante. As coreografia são difíceis mas o grupo começa a treinar em novembro e todos estão dispostos a aprender e a querer fazer o melhor de si. É isso que me cativa muito enquanto coreógrafa da trupe. Nesta edição vamos apresentar um carnaval cheio de cor, como nunca o fizemos, com um mix de 3 músicas muitos alegres e ao estilo do Fitness Team, fatos arrojados e vamos fazer com que o público interaja e se divirta connosco pois não há nada mais cativante e motivador do que sentir o carinho e os aplausos daqueles que nos veem desfilar. É a cereja em cima do bolo. O balanço que fazemos é positivo sem dúvida. Tem sido uma experiência super fantástica mesmo, tem sido muito bom, com obstáculos pelo meio, como tudo mas que juntos como uma TEAM, temos ultrapassado muito bem.

MIM – Mário Ramos, quais as suas principais fontes de inspiração, cores e materiais para o cortejo deste ano? Mário Ramos - O mundo imaginário foi sem dúvida o foco principal deste projeto, figuras como o unicórnio, fadas, e alguns aspectos da mitologia grega, nomeadamente deuses, musas, templos, entre outros. Este projeto pretende representar um utopia - a criação do “nosso” universo fantástico, cheio de brilho, requinte e glamour.

MIM – Como se processa toda a criação dos vossos fatos e carro alegórico?

MR - O projeto deste Carnaval iniciou-se no mês de agosto (2019) com a projeção/concepção de inúmeros croquis, que

depois selecionamos os mais interessantes e representativos para ilustrar o tema. É um processo moroso, depois em novembro e após entregar o respetivo projeto, deslocamo-nos a Lisboa, Coimbra e Porto para contactar diretamente com os nosso fornecedores e fazer a devida seleção dos tecidos, pedraria, plumas e outros materiais utilizados.

MIM – Qual é o balanço que faz, enquanto mentor e designer deste projeto desde 2018 (e também bailarino), e quais são as suas expetativas para o grupo no futuro? MR - Sinceramente temos dedicado muito aos projetos que executamos, porque só assim é que se consegue avançar com nossos objetivos. Queremos continuar a ver a Trupe crescer e aperfeiçoar em vários níveis. Nós adoramos Carnaval e desfilar no funchal era e é um sonho que até então temos conseguido realizar e esperamos que se mantenha por longo e longos anos! mdos 600 anos em Machico e no Porto Santo ( Som, Luz e estruturas).

Broadbill, also known as swordfish, are large, highly migratory, predatory fish characterized by a long, flat, pointed bill. They are a popular sport fish of the billfish category, though elusive. Broadbills are elongated, round-bodied, and lose all teeth and scales by adulthood. These fish are found widely in tropical and temperate parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

FAUNA

Curiosities  They commonly reach 3 m (9.8 ft) in length, and the maximum reported is 4.55 m (14.9 ft) in length and 650 kg (1,430 lb) in weight. The broadbill is named after its pointed, flat bill.  Females are larger than males, and Pacific broadbills reach a greater size than northwest Atlantic and Mediterranean swordfish. They reach maturity at 4 to 5 years of age and the maximum age is believed to be at least 9 years. Broadbill ages are derived, with difficulty, from annual rings on fin rays rather than otoliths, since their otoliths are small in size.

Broadbills are not schooling fish. They swim alone or in very loose aggregations, separated by as much as 10 m (33 ft) from a neighboring broadbill. They are frequently found basking at the surface, airing their first dorsal fin.

 Swordfish are ectothermic animals; however, along with some species of sharks, they have special organs next to their eyes to heat their eyes and brains.

Boaters report this to be a beautiful sight, as is the powerful jumping for which the species is known. This jumping, also called breaching, may be an effort to dislodge pests, such as remoras or lampreys.

FLORA  Custard apple, (genus Annona), genus of about 160 species of small trees or shrubs of the family Annonaceae, native to the New World tropics. Custard apples are of local importance as traditional medicines, and several species are commercially grown for their edible fruits.

 Members of the genus are typically evergreen or semideciduous plants and cannot tolerate frost. The leaves can be leathery or hairy and are generally ovate with smooth margins. The unusual flowers feature six to eight fleshy curved petals in two whorls and numerous stamens and pistils. The fruits are often scaly and succulent and are sometimes segmented.

ANONA EXHIBITION The Casa do Povo of Faial and the Farmers Association promotes the annual Regional Custard Apple Exhibition (Exposição Regional da Anona), in March, in partnership with the Regional Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources and the Municipal Council of Santana. Being held in the parish of Faial, the event aims to support the production of this fruit and its derivatives, such like liqueurs, puddings, ice cream and milkshakes, in an environment with a lot of entertainment, music and contests.

The Cabo Girão viewpoint, situated on the highest promontory in Europe, at an elevation of 580 m, offers a vertiginous view of the fajãs of Rancho and Cabo Girão – small areas of cultivated land at the foot of the cliff – as well as magnificent panoramic views over the ocean and the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. The viewpoint has been renovated, and a suspended glass platform, called a skywalk, was built. It is an excellent spot to practice paragliding and base jumping. Recently, the Portuguese parachutist Mário Pardo performed a spectacular motorcycle leap here. Nearby is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Fátima (Our Lady of Fátima), built in 1951 and one of the main pilgrimage sites of the island.

The Lido Promenade is a seafront walkway that provides a pedestrian link between the Lido area and Formosa Beach. The entire path affords far-reaching views over the Atlantic. In the Lido area can be found a seafront walkway that provides a pedestrian link between the Lido area and Formosa Beach. This pedestrian precinct is a welcoming place where wide views over the Atlantic Ocean combine with the gardened areas of the promenade, making this place very attractive from a landscape point of view. This area can be visited for sport or leisure. Another attraction of this promenade is its proximity to beach areas. Various public swimming pools can be accessed from the Lido Promenade, such as the Lido and Ponta Gorda beach complexes and the Naval Club, as well as Poças do Governador and Formosa Beach.

4 - Ribeira Brava Located on the south coast of the island, the municipality of Ribeira Brava has a church, in the centre of its town, called São Bento, built in the fifteenth century and possesses beautiful panels of clear Flemish influence, representing the Virgin and the Child, São Bento and São Bernardo.

2 - Câmara de Lobos Câmara de Lobos is a pretty fishing town that is located on the southeastern side of Madeira and makes for a pleasant day trip from Funchal. Câmara de Lobos is a working town specialising in the fishing of the night dwelling Scabbard fish. This hard fishing lifestyle is reflected in the town, with small traditional tenements that house multiple families crowding around the cliffs, while at dawn the returning fishermen head to the bars to drink Poncha, a strong alcoholic drink. For visitors Camara de Lobos is a picturesque location with colourful fishing boats pulled up onto the grey beaches, which are over looked by some of the highest cliffs in Europe. These charming views inspired Camara de Lobos’ most famous resident, Winston Churchill, to paint his celebrated pictures of the region and this history is lovely embraced by the town.In total there are 2500 kms of levadas on the island and many were created even before the first roads. A truly iconic and enjoyable experience, the levada walk is definitely a peaceful experience worth undertaking.

5 - Serra D'Água Located in the centre of the southwest part of the island, Serra d'Água is surrounded by a dense thicket and high hills, among which stand out the peaks of Cruz, Cedro and Pico Grande. It is still irrigated by several streams, which together form the Ribeira Brava stream. The name of this parish is derived from the construction of a mill for the sawing of timber with the name of “serra de água”. It was in this parish that the first Hydroelectric Station of the island emerged, in 1953.

Via the Serra d’Água road we can go up to Encumeada, a high point of the island that connects Ribeira Brava on the south coast, and São Vicente, on the north coast. Along the climb to Encumeada we can glimpse the stunning panoramic landscapes of the southern and northern parts of the island, with the blue sky on the background and the clouds interspersed with mountains.

6 - São Vicente São Vicente is an area characterized by green nature and abundant forest, modelled by volcanic forces and erosion in its beautiful slopes. One of the most representative symbols of the picturesque town of São Vicente is the small chapel built inside a basalt rock at the mouth of the stream that runs through the town. In the heart of São Vicente one finds the Indigenous Garden where dozens of species of local flora are represented. The Museum Centre Rota do Cal (Lime Route) situated in this parish, is composed of a pedestrian trip that takes about 30 minutes from the quarries of limestone extraction to the museum. In the parish of São Vicente there is an extensive area of Laurel Forest. The importance of laurel is due to both its representation in terms of diversity of species of flora and fauna and the respective state of conservation. The Laurel Forest was classified as a Natural Heritage Site of UNESCO in 1999.

7 - Porto Moniz The natural pools of Porto Moniz are the highlight of the village of Porto Moniz. The natural salt water swimming pools are made up of volcanic rock, into which the sea flows naturally. nevertheless, been well spent on this little jewel. The population of Sao Vicente has definitely displayed a lot of creativity for chapel construction.

It sits high on top of a hill and is visible from the entire valley. The chapel was built on the initiative of the population in 1948, as a way to celebrate the end of World War II. In the clock tower, about fifteen meters high, there are four clocks. There is one on each facade of the building. Strangely enough, the clocks all show different times. Another interesting element of confusion is a plaque, fixed on the main façade. It states that the building was recovered on the basis of EAGGF funding. The EAGGF “…supports programs for rationalization, modernization and structural improvements in agriculture, farming and vocational training, exploitation of forests, development of rural areas by providing services to the population…” Not so clear to what extent the reconstruction of a chapel complies with the mission however, the money has

A Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima é um dos ex-libris de São Vicente e uma parte importante do património religioso e cultural desta freguesia do norte da Ilha. Está situada no Pico da Cova, tendo sido mandada construir nos anos 40 (primeira pedra lançada em 13 de Maio de 1945). Os sinos e o relógio da imponente torre de 14 metros de altura foram colocados posteriormente, quando era pároco o Padre Tomé Velosa. No passado o acesso à Capela era efetuado por um trilho de terra entre vegetação, poios de videiras, árvores, flores e algumas cabras a pastarem. Este percurso foi recentemente recuperado pela Junta de Freguesia local, juntamente com a vereda do Pico da Cova, que serve de ligação entre a Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima e o sítio dos Cardais de Baixo. A caminhada até ao topo faz-se pelos cerca de 170 degraus em pedra, com cruzes de Via-sacra ao longo dos mesmos. No cimo, o espaço é cuidado e limpo; a Capela apresenta-se também recuperada e foi criado um miradouro que permite observar em segurança a fantástica vista desde a serra até ao mar.

O novo jardim do Garajau está localizado numa área onde durante muitos anos funcionou uma pedreira, entretanto desativada. O espaço de lazer, com cerca de 7.500 metros quadrados, inclui uma cafetaria (ainda não está em funcionamento), uma pista para bicicletas, skate e patins, uma extensa área verde e uma outra de monumento geológico, para além de um parque infantil e um anfiteatro ao ar livre, com vista mar num investimento governamental de 1 milhão de euros. No centro do jardim foi implementada a cafeteria com esplanada, lado a lado com um amplo relvado e um espaço de recreio para os mais novos e menos novos, com equipamentos que apelam à motricidade, ao equilíbrio, à destreza física e à coordenação motora. A partir do café, existe uma rampa que permite aceder ao topo superior do jardim, onde se encontra um circuito para bicicletas, skate e patins. A encosta imediatamente abaixo é ocupada por diversos escorregas, com diversos desníveis.

COMPLETES 365 DAYS OF SOLO CIRCUMNAVIGATION

Henrique Afonso, affectionately nicknamed the ‘Pirate’ of Madeira, has completed his one-year adventure on a solo circumnavigation that began on January 15, 2019. The Madeiran, who set sail from Funchal Marina a year ago aboard the sailboat ‘Sofia do Mar’, is currently in Timor-Leste and will remain there until midMarch, as this is the time of year in which cyclones appear in the Indian Ocean.

“A year ago I began this adventure after passing through Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Barbados, Santa Lucia, Martinique, Curacao, Arruba, Colombia Panama, Ecuador, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Leti and now Timor-Leste. It has been a wonderful trip meeting magnificent people and checking out fantastic places. Today I am where I have never imagined that I could ever be. Now is the time to relax and think about the next 15,000 miles. It’s cyclone time, which ends in March. I want to thank everyone who has made this trip very colorful and all the help I have received in every place that I've anchored. A big hug," wrote Henrique Afonso on his Facebook page ‘Diário do Pirata’.

O madeirense, que zarpou da Marina do Funchal, a bordo do veleiro ‘Sofia do Mar’, encontra-se de momento em Timor-Leste, e por lá vai permanecer até meados de Março, dado que esta é a altura mais propícia para os ciclones, no Oceano Índico, condição que poderia colocar em risco esta sua volta ao Mundo que pretende recriar a epopeia do ‘Vinho da Roda’, técnica utilizada de forma a melhorar as propriedades do Vinho Madeira que transporta consigo, acelerando o processo de envelhecimento derivado do movimento das ondas e das diferentes variações de temperatura. Henrique Afonso escreveu na sua página de Facebook ‘Diário do Pirata’ a 15 de Janeiro:

“Faz hoje um ano que comecei esta aventura depois de passar por Canárias, Cabo verde, Barbados, Santa Lúcia, Martinica, Curaçau, Arruba, Colômbia, Panamá, Equador, Marquesas, Polinésia Francesa, Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua Nova Guiné, Leti e agora Timor Leste. Visite o solar e usufrua de um espaço cultural único, que marca as diferentes épocas e vivências ao longo de várias gerações, em homenagem à memória da família de Carlos Cristóvão.

História Por volta de 1690 o morgado Cristóvão Moniz de Menezes mandou edificar uma casa de residência com capela, evocando o santo do seu nome, que termina em 1692, data gravada na cantaria da porta da capela. Afirma-se como um tradicional solar madeirense abastado, na tradição arquitetónica insular do século XVII. Ao alto da escada, na parede, um azulejo armoriado evoca os brasões dos proprietários (Moniz, Menezes, Câmara, Drumond), herdeiros em sucessão de propriedade, até Carlos Cristóvão da Câmara Leme Escórcio de Bettencourt. Para a Capela de S. Cristóvão foi encomendada um retábulo, ainda existente na atualidade sobre o altar. Representa S. Cristóvão a atravessar o rio com o Menino sobre os ombros, tal como relata a lenda. Num dos ângulos do retábulo foi pintado o brasão da família, acima do retrato do morgado e da sua família.

Exemplar raro de arquitetura senhorial, este solar sofreu algumas transformações, fruto do devir dos tempos. Construíram-se instalações sanitárias, atelier, biblioteca, quartos, onde outrora havia lojas, adega, dormitório dos serviçais. Na cozinha permanece um forno original a lenha, sobre lajeado de pedra e apetrechos tradicionais de uma cozinha madeirense. Foi hospede nesta casa, a Madre Mary Jane Wilson (1840-1916),por acordo havido com D. Júlia de Bettencourt, para instalação de um centro educacional. De 8 de Setembro de 1904 até cerca de 1925, a Irmã Wilson aqui presidiu à fundação de uma Escola de S. Francisco de Sales. Pode caracterizar-se um núcleo significativo constituído por mobiliário de origem portuguesa e madeirense do século XVII ao XIX, em vinhático, mogno, nogueira e carvalho, como referência à marcenaria regional. Outro conjunto, é marcado pelo mobiliário português de inícios do século XIX do qual se deve destacar um canapé de pau santo ou um piano de gabinete em madeira de nogueira. Em especial, destaque um quadro a óleo do séc. XVII, O Milagre da Nazaré, coetâneo do inicio da ocupação do solar. Da coleção, especial referência para um sideboard português do seculo XVIII, em mogno, de uma oficina nacional ao tempo de D. Maria I.

Carlos Cristóvão foi o último herdeiro do solar, nasceu a 25 de Fevereiro de 1924, no Funchal e viveu em Machico. Falecido em 1998, foi uma das distintas figuras da cultura machiquense. Foi poeta, romancista, escreveu peças de teatro e, entre as suas obras, destaca-se o “Elucidário de Machico”, cuja primeira edição foi publicada em 1981.

À apresentação inicial das coleções, foram adicionadas peças provindas de antiquários, por desgaste dos originais no seu uso diário, alargando o número de objetos de uso doméstico e ornamental dos vários seculos com predominância para o seculo XIX, para melhor se caracterizar o quotidiano de uma quinta centenária, harmonizando e contextualizando a vivencia deste solar ao reforçar a dimensão de residência ao gosto madeirense desde o século XVII ao seculo XIX. Destaque-se numa caixa de prever em mogno e um bidet em madeira de vinhático, retomado a veracidade dos usos e costumes do seculos XVIII e XIX, nas casas mais abastadas.

A 13 de Março de 1987 Carlos Cristóvão doou o imóvel à Região Autónoma da Madeira, atualmente classificado como imóvel de Valor Local, estando à altura, em avançado estado de degradação. A Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Cultura começa a restaurar o solar, onde, em 2000, veio a funcionar a “Casa do Artista”, residência temporária de vultos do mundo da cultura.

Reabre em 2019, como solar visitável, justamente a celebrar os 600 anos do descobrimento da Ilha da Madeira, restituindo a sua aura mítica a este solar de tempos remotos, que Machico conserva entre os seus vales e simultaneamente, o usufruto pleno da antiga capela de veneração a um santo muito prezado pela população, alvo de romarias e promessas.

A visita a este solar é um convite ao passado. A memória deste lugar e destas gentes, que aqui deixaram a sua marca, tornou este solar único na Ilha da Madeira, uma relíquia que Machico conserva, entre os seus vales e simultaneamente, o usufruto pleno da antiga capela de veneração a Santo Cristóvão, muito prezado pela população, alvo de romarias e promessas.

Carlos Cristóvão was the last heir to the manor, born on February 25, 1924, in Funchal and lived in Machico. Died in 1998, he was one of the distinguished figures of Machiquense culture. He was a poet, novelist, wrote plays and, among his works, stands out the "Elucidário de Machico", whose first edition was published in 1981.

On March 13, 1987 he donated the property to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, currently classified as a property of Local Value, being up to it, in an advanced state of degradation. The Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture begins to restore the solar, where, in 2000, was installed the "House of the Artist", temporary residence of figures of the world of culture.

Rare example of manor architecture, this manor has undergone some transformations, the result of the coming of the times. Sanitary facilities were built, atelier, library, rooms, where there were once shops, winecellar, dormitory of servants. In the kitchen remains an original wood oven, on stone slab and traditional paraphernalia of a Madeiran kitchen.

This year marks the 6th anniversary of the beginning of guided tours, in several languages and supports, to the Church of St. John the Evangelist, better known as the Church of the College, in the College of Jesuits of Funchal. An integral part of the Madeiran Heritage program, recognized with 9 awards and distinctions, visits guided by volunteers, Portuguese and foreigners, from The Academic of Madeira allowed a greater knowledge and appreciation of historical heritage and of this building that was built 450 years ago. The approximately 12,000 visitors, including and highlighting students from various schools in the Region, "emphasize the beauty of the tiles, dating back to about 1720, with allegories to the Book of Revelation, a work by São João Evangelista. The Madeiran Heritage initiative provides a wide range of tours to some of Funchal's most iconic and historical landmarks.

O Cortejo Alegórico Carnavalesco Funchalense Os projetos de Carnaval são apresentados pelos grupos no final do verão (até Setembro), para serem analisados pela Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Cultura (que detém a tutela da festividade), e normalmente os temas lançados são relacionados com efemérides ou celebrações importantes na região.

Após a aprovação do projeto (geralmente são conhecidos os resultados em dezembro – que muitos grupos acham um pouco em cima da hora), os grupos dedicam-se então a preparar-se para a grande noite do Carnaval madeirense: abrem-se inscrições para os participantes, começa-se a trabalhar em todos os acessórios necessários a dar vida ao projeto e ensaiam-se, por muitas horas, as coreografias.

Sendo já um cartaz turístico consolidado, que atrai centenas de pessoas ao Funchal, no sábado antes do Carnaval para o grande desfile, o Carnaval na Madeira e particularmente o grande cortejo alegórico principal no Funchal, é resultado do trabalho de meses - cheio de cor e animação, música e ritmos contagiantes, plumas, tecidos e pedrarias e lantejolas - das trupes que nele participam.

São muitas horas de trabalho, durante os 2 meses que antecedem o grande dia que os grupos participantes dedicam à confeção de todos os elementos – muitos tecidos e materiais são encomendados em lojas existentes, bem como também recorrem a lojas de Portugal Continental e de outros países, dada a variedade e quantidade disponível na Região. Tiram-se medidas a todos os participantes, para que as costureiras possam dar início à confeção dos fatos (o que exige também provas dos fatos para acerto de pormenores), e após concluídos são adornados com acessórios e ficam prontos para o grande desfile. Pormenores como armações utilizadas nas cabeças e nas costas, usualmente repletas de plumas e pedrarias, são depois entregues a cada folião.

No desfile de 2019 do sambódromo do Funchal participaram 14 troupes e cerca de 1900 foliões. Foram elas: João Egídio, Caneca Furada, Gerigonça, Fura Samba, Cariocas, Associação Animad, Sorrisos de Fantasia, Tramas e Enredos, Turma do Funil, Império da Ilha, Fitness Team, Rotiça (troupe estreante), Dance Flavourz by Francis Cardoso e Sweet Dancers.

CARNAVAL NA MADEIRA

O Carnaval na Madeira

Sabia que? A festa de carnaval surgiu “pela mão” da Igreja Católica, no século XI, aquando da instituição das celebrações da Semana Santa, antecedida por 40 longos dias de jejum: a Quaresma. Durante os três dias que antecediam este período de penitência e privação, as pessoas uniam-se, enalteciam os seus costumes e tradições, organizando uma grande festa que decorria nos chamados “dias gordos”, principalmente na terça-feira. O povo trocava presentes, comia e bebia de manhã à noite e elegia um rei por brincadeira. Na época do Renascimento, surgiram os bailes de máscaras e as fantasias.

A origem de carnaval está relacionada com a junção de duas palavras latinas “carnis” (carne) e “valles” (prazeres) e o evento tem a duração de 3 dias.

Segundo alguns autores, as tradições do Carnaval madeirense podem ter influenciado o Carnaval no Brasil? No século XVI, os emigrantes madeirenses implantaram no Brasil, a indústria do açúcar, também conhecido por “ouro branco”. Levaram também costumes e tradições, que poderão ter contribuído para as festividades do Carnaval, neste país. O carnaval português, que foi levado às suas colónias (inclusive o Brasil) sempre teve características bem diferentes do realizado em outros países da Europa, sendo reconhecido até mesmo por autores portugueses como uma festa cujas características principais eram a sujeira e a violência. O carnaval surgiu no Brasil em 1723, com a migração vinda das ilhas portuguesas da Madeira, Açores e Cabo Verde. As festividades carnavalescas, chamadas de Entrudo (palavra de origem latina que significa "entrada"), eram semelhantes às que ocorriam em Portugal – descritas pela Enciclopédia Portuguesa- Brasileira:

"Pelas ruas generalizava-se uma verdadeira luta em que as armas eram os ovos de gema, ou suas cascas contendo farinha ou gesso, cartuchos de pós de goma, cabaças de cera com água de cheiro, tremoços, tubos de vidro ou de cartão para soprar com violência, milho e feijão que se despejavam aos alqueires sobre as cabeças dos transeuntes . Havia ainda as luvas com areia destinadas a cair de chofre sobre os chapéus altos ou de coco dos passantes pouco previdentes e até se jogava entrudo com laranjas, tangerinas e mesmo com pastéis de nata ou outros bolos. Em vários bairros atiravam-se à rua, ou de janela para janela, púcaros e tachos de barro e alguidares já em desuso, como depois se fez também no último dia do ano, no intuito de acabar com tudo de velho que haja em casa. Também se usaram nos velhos entrudos portugueses a vassourada e as bordoadas com colheres de pau etc.."
