In the 15th century, Madeira began a new economic stage called The Sugar Cycle, or White Gold Era.
Imported from Sicily, sugar cane quickly became the main source of income in Madeira, attracting merchants from various parts of Europe. The City of Funchal turned out to be the center of the world and the sugar cane its main engine for making money. By 1472, Madeira's sugar was exported to Flanders in the tonnes. By the XVI century, Madeira sugar cane was at its peak. It was roughly at this time that giant paintings, or Flemish Art, were imported to Madeira along with objects made of silver, copper and metal, all of which can be seen when visiting the numerous museums across Madeira.

Estatuto Editorial A Revista Madeira Island Magazine é uma revista bimestral bilingue (Português e Inglês), gratuita, em formato impresso. A revista Madeira Island iniciou a sua publicação em Maio de 1978 com o intuito de dar a conhecer a Madeira a todos os seus visitantes, e trata, especialmente, temas relacionados à Cultura, Turismo, História, lazer, eventos, gastronomia e personalidades da Madeira, mantendo a possibilidade de abordar outras temáticas que sejam relevantes para os nossos visitantes bem como todos os Madeirenses. A Madeira Island Magazine é uma revista independente.
This is the 1st edition of the Madeira a Cantar performance and singing contest an event organised by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture is part of the 600th anniversary commemorations of the Discovery of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo This event intends to increase, consolidate and reinforce Madeira and Porto Santo cultural scenery and activities thus contribuiting to dissiminate these events amongst all the municipalities in the Region, an invitation to locals to partake in this event.
Trata-se de um concurso de voz/ interpretação musical, ao qual podem concorrer todos os residentes na Região Autónoma da Madeira, mediante uma inscrição prévia. A 1a. Edição do concurso de voz/ interpretação musical Madeira a Cantar, no âmbito das Comemorações dos 600 anos, pretende incrementar e consolidar medidas que contribuam para reforçar a fruição cultural e a formação de públicos através de ações e eventos descentralizados, abrangentes e que percorram todos os concelhos da Região, incentivando os seus naturais e residentes à participação. O concurso decorre entre julho de 2018 e abril de 2019.
600 anos da descoberta do Arquipélago da Madeira Ciclo do Açúcar
No século XV, a Madeira inicia um novo ciclo económico. O Ciclo do Açúcar, também conhecido por Ouro Branco. Importada da Sicília, rapidamente a cana-de-açúcar transforma por completo a paisagem, tornando-se numa fonte de rendimento por excelência atraindo mercadores de vários pontos da Europa, essencialmente. A Cidade do Funchal passa a ser o centro do mundo e a cana sacarina o principal motor da economia madeirense. Em 1472, o açúcar da Madeira começa a ser exportado diretamente para a Flandres, passando a ser este o principal centro de distribuição, passando a Ilha da Madeira a ser reconhecida como um importante eixo nas relações económicas entre Portugal e a Flandres. A produção da cana-de-açúcar atraiu e fixou aventureiros e comerciantes das mais diversificadas origens, sobretudo italianos, bascos, catalães e flamengos. A comercialização do açúcar na Madeira teve o seu ponto alto na década de 20 do século XVI, coincidindo deste modo com o negócio de obras de Arte Flamenga e coincide com a datação da maioria das obras de arte flamengas existentes na ilha, demonstrando o ambiente de prosperidade comercial que era notório. Foram importadas obras de gigantescas proporções, sobretudo pinturas, aparatosos trípticos ou retábulos mistos, assim como imagens de vulto de Bruges, Antuérpia e Malines. Também foram importados objetos de prata e cobre e pedras tumulares com incrustações de metal, provenientes da Flandres e do Hainaut, como as que podem ser vistas atualmente na Sé Catedral do Funchal e em Museus como o de Arte Sacra. Até à primeira metade do século XVI, a Madeira foi um dos principais mercados do açúcar do Atlântico, no entanto, este ciclo acabou por se fechar, passando a comercialização da cana-de-açúcar a ser feita noutros mercados. Outro Ciclo passou a ser protagonista.

The Funchal Trade and Commerce Association - Madeira Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACIF-CCIM) organises this event every year, in the shape of an exhibition aimed at promoting the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo as destinations of choice for the weddings and honeymoons sector. The official programme includes numerous entertaining activities, including fashion shows by regional and Portuguese stylists, as well as, a range of workshops related to the subject of the event, which will be held at Pestana Fórum Casino.

Taking advantage of this privileged scenario, the Mountain Club of Funchal (Clube de Montanha do Funchal) organizes this event of excellence., which combines leisure and competition, offering participants stunning scenarios and striving for respect for the environment and fair-play. The trails are diversified and forest paths, dirt roads, sidewalks and levadas lead the participants through the forests of Porto Moniz.

Este evento, proporciona uma incursão pela belíssima mancha verde do concelho do Porto Moniz, através de um percurso diversificado, desenhado maioritariamente por veredas, levadas, caminhos florestais e outros acessos de montanha.

This event, organized by AARAM – Madeira Athletics Association in partnership with AMRAM – Madeira’s Municipalities Association, goes around the island in about 167 km (100 miles) allowing to discover Madeira in a singular race. This is an ultra endurance non-stop race with absolute respect for nature and the environment.
The ‘Festa dos Compadres’ marks the opening of the Carnival season in Madeira, a tradition going back to more than 50 years, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Santana. This is an event known for its originality, marked by its gigantic figures who roam the streets of this quiet town located on the north of the Madeira island, in a parade full of humour, lots of colour and merriment.
A Associação de Atletismo da Região Autónoma da Madeira, em parceria com a AMRAM – Associação de Municípios da Região Autónoma da Madeira, organizam mais uma edição do EMUM – Eco Madeira Ultra Marathon, que este ano apresenta novidades no seu traçado, deixando cair a volta à ilha non-stop e passando a se efetuar em 4 etapas que segundo o regulamento será 4 maratonas (aprox. 42km cada etapa), mas os percursos têm algumas oscilações de distâncias.
O concelho de Santana celebra anualmente a Festa dos Compadres, evento que marca com grande entusiasmo o início da época de Carnavalesca na Região, uma tradição com origem há mais de 50 anos. Conhecida pela sua originalidade, esta festividade é marcada pelas suas divertidas figuras gigantes que percorrem num desfile cheio de humor, muita cor e alegria, as ruas desta localidade situada na costa norte da ilha.

March 2nd 3rd | Porto Santo www.atletismomadeira.pt The Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is once again hosting the Porto Santo Nature Trail, having reshaped the event, which is held annually in the Golden island. The Porto Santo Trail shall have three races that will cover the island from one end to the other: the main race being 43 km; the second, 22 km; and the shortest relay, 9 km. The competition integrates the Regional Trail Championship, in the distance Half Marathon and Marathon.

Exposição Regional da Anona March 16th - 17th | Faial www.cm-santana.com Organised by the Faial Parish Council, this annual event pays tribute to one of the most grown subtropical fruits in the region - the Custard Apple. This initiative features the participation of some local farmers, who promote the production of this fruit and related products, such as liquors, puddings, ice creams and milkshakes, and also includes plenty of entertainment, music and competitions, in a setting very similar to the traditional Madeira festivity (“arraial”). Organizado pela Junta de Freguesia do Faial, este evento presta homenagem anualmente a um dos frutos subtropicais mais cultivados na região – a Anona. Esta iniciativa conta com a participação de alguns agricultores locais, prestigiando a produção deste fruto e seus derivados, tais como licores, pudins, gelados e batidos. Esta ação conta ainda com muita animação, música e concursos, num ambiente muito semelhante ao tradicional arraial madeirense.

“Amo-TEatro" Festival March 23st 31st | Camacha facebook.com/amoteatro In collaboration with the Camacha Experimental Theatre (TEC), Camacha's Casa do Povo will organize another edition of the “AMO-TEatro” Festival. This festival is part of the 10th edition of Madeira's Theatre Showcase. This year the Festival will have the participation of 13 local and national theatre companies. The event will be presented at Casa do Povo (Camacho) and the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre. A Casa do Povo da Camacha, através do Teatro Experimental da Camacha (TEC), organiza mais uma edição do Festival “AMO-TEatro”, iniciativa integrada no âmbito da 10ª edição da Amostra de Teatro da Madeira. Este festival tem levado ao palco grupos de teatro profissionais e amadores uma iniciativa que contribui para a promoção do excelente trabalho que se desenvolve nesta área na Madeira.
Sugarcane show March | Canhas www.cm-pontadosol.pt This annual event takes place in Canhas, Ponta do Sol, namely the Farmers Market. There will be plenty of music and entertainment on location, and an exhibition pertaining to the sugarcane molasses production process. Este certame tem, como palco central, o Mercado dos Agricultores dos Canhas, situado na costa oeste da ilha, onde não faltam as típicas barracas de comes e bebes, muita música e animação, para além de exposições sobre a cana-de-açúcar e o processo de produção do mel de cana. Os mais ativos poderão ainda participar na apanha da cana, que decorre na manhã de sábado.
The Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre will host another edition of the Madeira Literary Festival, an event that attracts writers, poets and literary critics, locals and foreigners who will present a wealth of ideas and cultural exchange. As in previous years, the festival features the launch of a new book and debates on different literary topics.
O Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias acolhe anualmente o Festival Literário da Madeira, um evento que atrai escritores, poetas e críticos literários, nacionais e estrangeiros que irão promover no Funchal um rico intercâmbio de palavras e de ideias. Hundreds of national and foreign chefs are awarded with the famous Michelin Guide stars. Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant and The Cliff Bay hotel (2 Michelin stars) kick off the 10th Stars Route hosted by Chef Benoît Sinthon.
A "Rota das Estrelas" é um dos mais importantes festivais de alta gastronomia, que acontecem em Portugal envolvendo, desde 2010, mais de meia centena de chefes nacionais e estrangeiros galardoados com as famosas estrelas do Guia Michelin. O evento desenrola-se ao longo de vários jantares, com um menu de degustação preparado em conjunto por vários chefs convidados, incluindo showcookings, workshops, degustação de vinho e visitas guiadas para divulgar os produtos gastronómicos locais.

Madeira Carnival Origins The word Carnival is of Christian origin, and in the Middle Ages, it referred to a period following Christmastide that reached its climax before midnight on Shrove Tuesday. Seeing that Lent was a period of fasting, Carnival therefore represented a last period of feasting and celebration before the spiritual rigors of Lent. Meat was plentiful during this part of the Christian calendar and it was consumed during Carnival as people abstained from meat consumption during the following liturgical season, Lent. In the last few days of Carnival, known as Shrovetide, people confessed (shrived) their sins in preparation for Lent as well. In 1605, a Shrovetide play spoke of Christians who painted their faces to celebrate the season:

flowing the public with their joy. Slapstick Parade The “Trapalhão” Parade (slapstick parade), held on Shrove Tuesday, represents the spontaneous parade that originally occurred on Rua da Carreira. Participation is open to all, both national and foreign citizens, either independently or as a group. The participants’ creativity knows no boundaries and spans from social and political satire, to traditional themes, or simple character disguise. Whether you watch or participate in this parade, you will undoubtedly be able to share moments of good humour and interact with the public. Compadres Feast The Carnival celebrations begin with “Festa dos Compadres” (Compadres Feast), which takes place in Santana. The nature of this traditional festivity is part of passage from winter to spring ritual and the renewal of the local community. The action unfolds in a clear antagonism between male and female local residents, well represented through the satirical male and female dolls made by the participants. The feast focuses on the judgement of the "compadre" and the judgement of the "comadre", during which social criticism is done towards the events and activities of individuals and
community institutions that took place over the year. In the end, both the “compadre" and the "comadre" are burned as punishment. Street Entertainment On Wednesday, before Shrove Tuesday, downtown Funchal, in particular the central walkway at Avenida Arriaga, is captivated by the magic of Carnival, which becomes the center of numerous street entertainment events, including carnival music, performances and countless events that contribute to rousing the spirit of revelry in tourists and locals. Carnival "Robberies" This is a tradition among Madeira natives, the so-called "robberies", which occur during the period preceding Carnival. These were carried out by disguised groups, who entered into their friends’ homes in order to "steal" their season delicacies: the traditional "sonhos" and "malassadas". These incursions always ended with a private indoor party. Theme Parties Nightlife hangout spots also offer
9 various themed nights during the period preceding Carnival, such as "Hippies Night" and "Travesties Night". Children’s Carnival During this period, children and their parents make masks to take to school. On Friday morning, prior to Carnival, about a thousand young revellers from various schools and kindergartens of Funchal, all in disguise, parade through the city center (Avenida Arriaga). Solidarity Carnival On Friday afternoon, previous to Carnival, the city center is once again the stage of another highly original and creative entertainment initiative: hundreds of revellers from “Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Funchal” parade along Avenida Arriaga towards the Municipal Garden, where a show takes place.

Animação de Rua - 26 de fevereiro a 10 de março A partir da quarta-feira que antecede o dia de Carnaval, a baixa citadina do Funchal, especialmente a placa central da Avenida Arriaga, deixa-se contagiar pela magia do carnaval, e torna-se o centro de inúmeras iniciativas de animação de rua que incluem música carnavalesca, espetáculos, arruadas e atuações diversas. Festas Temáticas As unidades de diversão noturna oferecem, também durante o tempo que antecede o Carnaval, diversas noites temáticas, como a "Noite dos Hippies" e a "Noite dos Travestis", convidando os seus utentes a se divertirem disfarçados com uma máscara desse tema. A Associação Recreativa e Cultural e Escola de Samba Fura Samba, surgiu para a dinamização de dois Grandes Desfiles que ocorrem na Ilha da Madeira, o Carnaval e a Festa da Flor. O principal objetivo é desenvolver e recriar temas para os "GRANDES DESFILES" que ocorrem na Madeira. No sábado de Carnaval, à noite, o colorido e animado cortejo alegórico traz milhares de turistas e residentes à baixa do Funchal, para que estes vivam e participem nesta alegria. O cortejo conta este ano conta 14 trupes, mais de um milhar de foliões com vistosos trajes, e uma dezena de carros alegóricos primorosamente enfeitados, cujo o tema é os 600 anos da descoberta da nossa ilha. A associação, tem uma presença “obrigatória” por ter também a responsabilidade de ser escola de samba o ano inteiro. Os Fura Samba apresentam o tema “Vem da Alma” com as cores: dourado que está associado ao ouro á sua riqueza; prateado que associa-se ao modero, ao avanço das tenologias, à inovação; vermelho cor do amor; ao verde de esperança, ao vigor, frescor e calma e ao azul a cor do espírito e do pensamento que simboliza a lealdade, a fidelidade, a personalidade e sutileza.
Esta associação conta com alguns prémios: 2009 - 1º Lugar no Campeonato de Samba Enredo de Portugal, 2010 - 2º Lugar no Campeonato de Samba Enredo de Portugal. Preparation: 1) In a medium saucepan, bring the water, butter, and salt to a boil over mediumhigh heat. Add the flour and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon to form a ball. Take the pan off the heat and place it in the
sink half filled with water. 2) After cooling the mixture a bit, beat in the eggs, one by one. Continue beating to aerate the dough. When ready, deep-fry spoonfuls of the
dough in hot oil (360°F/180°C) until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels. 3) To serve, sprinkle the sonhos with a mixture of confectioner’s sugar and cinnamon. Serve warm.

Zimbabwe stone sculpture is a contemporary African art that started in the early 1960s. It has become one of the most prolific art movements in Africa and many artists have become household names in the international art scene. The sculpture movement is still flourishing and has already entered its third generation of artists. The artists' community in Tengenenge has been part of it since 1966. The Berardo Collection of Zimbabwe stone sculpture is a historical collection. It embodies a closed chapter in the history of that art with works by artists of the first generation. Most sculptures date from the very first years at Tengenenge. Some of the artists have made it internationally. Names like Henry MUNYARADZI or Bernard MATEMERA and, to a lesser extent, Fanizani AKUDA, Sylvester MUBAYI or Anderson MWALE are familiar to all those who take an interest in contemporary African art. In 1981, Mr. Joe Berardo acquired more than 2500 sculptures that were displayed in a cactus garden in Pretoria (South Africa). As such, the Berardo Collection must hold many first, and indeed only, attempts at sculpting. A special point of interest are the sculptures by women artists. The female sculptors at Tengenenge sign under their own name which means they had an individual status as artist. In the case of Erina FANIZANI, for instance, it becomes obvious that she has provided her husband Fanizani AKUDA with the style he became famous for later on.
Paixão Africana A escultura em pedra do Zimbabué é uma forma de arte africana contemporânea que viu a luz do dia no início da década de 1960. Desde então, tornou-se um dos mais prolíficos movimentos artísticos africanos e alguns dos seus artistas são hoje nomes de vulto na cena artística internacional. É um movimento ainda em expansão, tendo entrado já na sua terceira geração de artistas. A comunidade de artistas de Tengenenge é parte integrante do movimento desde 1966. O acervo de escultura em pedra do Zimbabué da Colecção Berardo é uma colecção histórica, reunindo obras da primeira geração de artistas, representativas de um capítulo já encerrado da história desta forma de arte. Grande parte das esculturas data dos primeiríssimos anos de Tengenenge. Alguns dos artistas alcançaram entretanto renome a nível mundial. Todos aqueles que se interessam pela arte africana contemporânea conhecem certamente os nomes de Henry MUNYARADZI e Bernard MATEMERA, e talvez os de Fanizani AKUDA, Sylvester MUBAYI e Anderson MWALE. Em 1981, o Comendador José Berardo adquiriu mais de 2500 esculturas que se encontravam expostas num jardim de cactos em Pretória, na África do Sul. A Colecção Berardo possui, assim, um grande número de esboços escultóricos de carácter absolutamente único. Um aspecto de grande interesse é a presença de obras de escultoras. As escultoras de Tengenenge assinam o seu trabalho com o próprio nome, o que reflecte o seu estatuto individualizado enquanto artistas. No caso de Erina FANIZANI, é óbvio ter sido ela a inspirar ao marido, Fanizani AKUDA, o estilo que mais tarde haveria de lhe granjear celebridade.

World’s 1st LNG Powered Cruise Ship
Dining AIDAnova is the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered cruise ship, and was constructed at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, for Carnival Corporation’s German cruise line AIDA Cruises. It is the first of seven next-generation LNG-powered cruise ships ordered by leisure travel company Carnival and represents the 13th vessel in the AIDA fleet. The contract for the construction of the AIDAnova ship was awarded in June 2015, while the keel-laying ceremony was held at Meyer Werft’s shipyard at Seatrade Europe in Hamburg in September 2017. AIDAnova first anchored in Madeira’s on December 24th, 2018. The AIDAnova LNG-powered cruise ship cruise features a ‘green cruising’ design and was built in compliance with the rules of classification society RINA. It incorporates a number of innovative designs with regards to amenities, entertainment and dining. The ship has a length of 337m, a width of 42m and a maximum draught of 8.8m. The vessel can carry up to 1,500 crew members and features a gross weight of 183,900t. It can accommodate up to 5,200 passengers in 2,600 staterooms, which
include 31 suites, 312 interior cabins, 198 ocean-view cabins and 1,655 balcony cabins. AIDAnova features 5,000 lower berths and the ship’s staterooms is available in 21 different categories, including double or family cabins, single cabins, verandas and junior suites with a light-flooded winter garden, as well as premium or penthouse suites with an area of up to 53m². A number of family cabins equipped with guest-friendly features are located on decks 15, 16 and 17, while deck 16 has been outfitted with a mini club, a kids club and a spacey wave club. A luxury day spa spanning an area of 3,545m² is situated across two decks with stunning sea views. It features five different saunas, two private wellness suites and a tepidarium. In addition, there’s a spacious sun deck with three outdoor Jacuzzis and more than 80 spa treatments. Passengers also have access to the latest equipment available at the ship’s modern fitness centre, which features both indoor and outdoor areas. The ship’s other features include three giant water slides, a water park, a climbing garden and a mini golf course, as well as a wide range of public areas and deck spaces for relaxing.
The LNG-powered ship has a total of 17 restaurants, including six à la carte restaurants, five specialty restaurants, five buffet restaurants and one snack bar. The ship’s Lanai deck is equipped with restaurants and bars and a Lanai Bar at the stern, which allows the guests to stroll around the entire ship. The pool deck is located on the roof of the ship. Additionally, the ship has 23 bars in order to provide guests with a wide range of refreshing drinks, coffee specialties and cocktails.
Propulsion & Performance AIDAnova operates both in port and on the open sea using four Caterpillar dualfuel hybrid engines. The engines are driven by environmentally friendly LNG, which reduces harmful emissions. The propulsion system includes four marine diesel generators to generate electricity for use by the ship’s various onboard systems

The Art of ‘Doors’ A mermaid sitting on a swing on the seabed while staring at a dolphin. A naked angel flying below clouds and armed with a bow and arrow. A sign reading “You Are Under Surveillance” above a couple and child whose heads are covered in paper bags. These are some of the many scenes and words painted onto the deteriorating doors of Rua Santa Maria in the Old Part of Funchal. In 2010, José Maria Montero had an idea - to have artists paint the doors of abandoned shops and homes. He asked over 100 artists, most of them island natives, to participate in the Arte Portas Abertas project, and gave them simple instructions: pick a door and create whatever you want on it. Not limited to paint, some artists used clay, metal, ceramic
tiles and even the keys to a computer keyboard to create art on 161 doors. One artist used iridescent glass and stones to create a sunset over a pebbled beach. Another sculpted hundreds of tiny faces onto the surface of a door. The youngest participant was only nine years old. The oldest was sixty-five. The doors have opened up the street to creativity and prosperity and the artists themselves are made up of professionals, amateurs, teachers and students - everyone who simply wants to express themselves through art. The Old Part of Town has very much had a major facelift in such a way that what was once rundown and vacant is now bustling with cafés and tourists.

Esta ação de revitalização veio promover a dinamização social e cultural deste bairro, transformando-o numa “galeria de arte” permanente, através da recuperação criativa, por parte de artistas e artesãos locais, de portas de casas, lojas e espaços. Estas intervenções incluíram todas as artes visuais, desde a pintura, à escultura, à fotografia, ao vídeo, à música e a escrita. De entre as várias entidades ilustres do panorama artístico madeirense que se associaram a este projeto destacam-se o arquitecto Paulo David e a decoradora e comendadora, Nini Andrade Silva. A primeira porta a ser pintada na rua Santa Maria foi no dia 06 de Abril de 2011, o número 77 pelo artista Mark Milewski.

Manta Ocorre nas ilhas da Madeira e do Porto Santo, está amplamente distribuída, ocupando praticamente todos os habitats, tais como áreas abertas, áreas florestais, áreas agrícolas e até mesmo áreas urbanas, desde a costa até aos picos mais elevados, a 1800 m de altitude. Em 2015, a população da Madeira e do Porto Santo foi estimada em cerca de 300 aves. Apresenta uma alimentação variada, que inclui pequenos mamíferos (murganhos e coelhos), assim como aves, répteis, anfíbios e insetos.

Descrição Os indivíduos adultos apresentam a parte superior do corpo de cor castanha avermelhado. O peito é castanho escuro uniforme ou listrado e manchado de amarelo esbranquiçado. A cabeça é pequena com o bico preto e enganchado. A cauda relativamente curta e de coloração cinzenta clara (Bannerman & Bannerman, 1965). Em voo sobressaem as manchas claras nas partes inferiores e as orlas mais escuras. A cauda mostra quase sempre listras transversais. Distribuição Mundial Espécie com ampla distribuição europeia. Em Portugal a subespécie B. b. harterti apenas ocorre no Arquipélago da Madeira. Na Macaronésia ocorre sob a forma de quatro subespécies endémicas dos arquipélagos da Madeira (B. b. harterti), Açores (B. b. rothschildi), Canárias (B. b. insularum)
e Cabo Verde (B. b. bannermani), respectivamente. Distribuição Regional Ocorre nas Ilhas da Madeira e Porto Santo e apresenta uma distribuição dispersa. Normalmente não formam bandos mas podem ser observados vários indivíduos juntos (normalmente duas a três aves). Habitat Ocorre num vasto leque de habitats, como zonas florestais indígenas e exóticas, zonas com pouca vegetação ou com vegetação rasteira, áreas agricolas e zonas sub-urbanas. Dieta Alimenta-se de roedores, insectos e pequenas aves. Tendência Populacional Nas últimas duas décadas apresentou uma tendência populacional nitidamente positiva. Medidas de Conservação Nas ilhas da Madeira e Porto Santo entre 20% a 50% da sua área de ocorrência estão classificadas como Zona de Protecção Especial e Zonas Especiais de Conservação, integrando desta forma a Rede Natura 2000. Todas as espécies são ornamentais e destacam-se pela beleza da folhagem, sendo o Anthurium andreanum Linden aquele que é usado como flor de corte devido ao tamanho e ao colorido das suas flores e pela grande durabilidade das flores cortadas. É uma planta perene, herbácea e epifítica, que possui folhas verdes, brilhantes e com longos pecíolos, pelo que também são usadas como folhagem de corte. O termo habitual de flor é na realidade o conjunto formado por uma folha modificada e colorida, denominada de espata, e por uma inflorescência tipo espiga, onde estão agregadas dezenas de minúsculas flores hermafroditas, e a que se dá o nome de espádice. Durante todo o ano, o antúrio produz flores que emergem da base de cada nova folha. A sequência folha/flor/folha/flor é mantida durante toda a vida da planta, sendo o intervalo de tempo entre elas dependente das condições ambientais e nutricionais da planta. Geralmente, as plantas começam a produzir flores de qualidade a partir dos dois anos de idade, produzindo uma média de 5 a 8 flores por planta e por ano. Estima-se um ciclo produtivo de 5 a 6 anos, variável. O antúrio é uma cultura relativamente fácil, que se espalhou em várias zonas da costa sul da ilha da Madeira, em altitudes inferiores a 300m. He visited Madeira in 1825, at the age of 26, and summed his trip up by stating, “I should think the situation of Madeira the most enviable on the whole earth. It ensures every European comfort with almost every tropical luxury.”

His father was Colonel James Coleridge, of Ottery St. Mary. He was born on 25 October 1798. He was educated at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge, of which he became a fellow. In 1825, he accompanied his uncle, William Hart Coleridge, the bishop of Barbados, to the West Indies, and described his excursion in a bright and lively little book, Six Months in the West Indies in 1825, published anonymously in the following year. He wrote there in volubly on emancipation of slaves, which he enumerated at 800,000, and concluded with this declaration of love and devotion upon his return, “But God bless thee, England, and crown thee with blessings, thou glorious land of my fathers! When I saw the two broad lights on the black Lizard again, my heart swelled with that unconquerable passion which I used to feel on returning from a distant school and sprinting into my dear mother's arms. O my country, I have no pride but that I belong to thee, and can write my name in the muster roll of mankind, an Englishman.” In 1826, he was called to the bar, and in 1829 married his first cousin Sara, daughter of the poet, of whom he wrote three years earlier during their courtship, “Now, reader, if you are an Englishman, (for I know nothing about the Scotch and Irish,) think over your own family, your sisters, or perhaps you have a cousin or so, ---. I love a cousin; she is such an exquisite relation, just standing between me and the stranger to my name, drawing upon so many sources of love and tieing them all up with every cord of human affection - almost my sister ere my wife!” He was the author, as appears from Southey's correspondence, of The Life of Swing, a pamphlet called forth by the rick-burning disturbances of 1830, which went through several editions. In the same year he published an introduction to Homer, the first of a contemplated series on the Greek poets, which was not continued further.
He became Coleridge's literary executor on the death of the latter in 1834, and the short remainder of his life was chiefly devoted to the fulfilment of this trust. Coleridge's Literary Remains, Aids to Reflection, and Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit were edited by him. His most signal service, however, was the preservation of Coleridge's Table Talk, which he had taken down from his lips during a series of years, and of which he published in 1835 'such parts as seem fit for present publication.' How much was withheld we do not know. The work is accompanied by an eloquent preface, vindicating Coleridge's conversation from the charge of obscurity, and his literary character from the charge of plagiarism. Henry Nelson Coleridge died on 26 January 1843, after long suffering from a spinal complaint. He was lecturer on equity to the Incorporated Law Society, and contributed several articles to the 'Quarterly Review.' He is described as singularly bright and animated when in health, which the general character of his writings tends to confirm. His son Herbert is separately noticed.

SPOTS Praia Formosa: At the end of the beach, exactly in the area of Praia dos Namorados where there are two large rocks, one that enters the sea and the second at the foot of the roads that go to Camara de Lobos. Ponta do Sol: After the panoramic yellow restaurant that is located above the beach, just in front of the bridge. Ribeira Brava: At the end of the beach on the left near the roundabout. Agua de Pena Park: Under the airport, at the end of the park, there is an artificial wall ideal for the winter season, where rain can be an impediment to climb natural rock. Baia de Abra, Ponta de São Lourenço: This is a beautiful, big bay at the heart of the Madeira natural park and a lovely spot to learn to climb or improve your skills. The crags offer a great selection of routes climbing to a height of about fifteen metres. Encumeada: This climbing spot is located at one of Madeira’s dramatic, mountain top, beauty spots between Encumeada and Bica da Cana. It is the ideal spot to get more experience in traditional climbing techniques. It offers a good quality rock face apt for placing protection for a safe climb up to twenty metres in height.

Imagine a rugged cliff overlooking the sea that you can climb while hearing the roar of the ocean below. All of your senses are sharp, and reaching the top depends only on you. This sensation, coupled with the force of nature around you, will leave you breathless. If you are a classic rock climber, you have the option of finding new routes. If you are a beginner, you can always practice this sport with the help of professionals. Due to the basaltic rock that lies across the island, the walls will be quite solid. Definitely a different way to get to know the island. To practice climbing in Madeira, so far, no special permits are needed except under the airport where the wall is rented for €4 per hour. There are routes of all levels and for all tastes. From the artificial wall climbing under the airport, simple routes and easy to ride “top rope” as in Praia Formosa and Ponta de São Lourenço, as well as intermediate and difficult as in Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava, Encumeada, Pico do Arieiro e Pico Ruivo.

Na Madeira existem vastos terrenos para explorar fazendo escalada. Se é praticante de escalada clássica aventure-se a abrir novas vias. As paredes que encontra são bastante sólidas devido à rocha basáltica que se encontra em toda a ilha da Madeira. Uma experiência destas irá mexer com todos os seus sentidos e só depende de si atingir o topo. Esta sensação, aliada à força da natureza que o rodeia, vai deixar a sua respiração suspensa. As zonas preferidas pelos praticantes de escalada são a cordilheira central a as falésias marinhas. Existem vias para todos os níveis, as falésias costeiras são os melhores sítios para se iniciar a prática da escalada com níveis acessíveis e facilidade de acesso, como na Praia Formosa a oeste do Funchal, a ponta de São Lourenço no Caniçal, na Ponta do Sol ou Ribeira Brava. Para os escaladores mais experimentados existem muitas vias num ambiente de montanha no Pico Ruivo, Encumeada e no Pico do Areeiro. Se for principiante pode sempre praticar esta modalidade com a ajuda de profissionais desta modalidade que encontra na ilha, seguindo as regras de equipamento e de segurança. Alguns dos Spots: Parque Desportivo de Água de Pena Situado por baixo do aeroporto, este parque tem uma parede artificial que permite a iniciação em escalada. Baía D’Abra Localizada na ponta Este da Ilha da Madeira, mais precisamente no Caniçal (Baía d’Abra), em pleno Parque Natural, formando uma paisagem única num local paradisíaco. O nível de dificuldade é baixo/médio. Lombo do Mouro, Bica da Cana Este spot situa-se entre o topo da Encumeada e a Bica da Cana, e permite uma escalada clássica atendendo á boa qualidade da rocha para a utilização de proteções, onde contamos com vias com grau de dificuldade médio/alto. Pico Cidrão (Pico Areeiro) O Pico Cidrão, o 3º pico mais alto da Ilha da Madeira, com 1801 metros, em pleno Parque Natural permite uma escalada com um grau de dificuldade alto.

Casa do Aposento is an example of a traditional Madeiran Manor House, with several examples in the north of Madeira, especially in the village of Ponta Delgada, in the municipality of SĂŁo Vicente. A manor house was historically the main residence of the lord of the manor. The house formed the administrative centre of a manor in the European feudal system; within its great hall were held the lord's manorial courts, communal meals with manorial tenants and great banquets. The term is today loosely applied to various country houses, frequently dating from the late medieval era, which formerly housed the gentry. They were sometimes fortified, but this was frequently intended more for show than for defence. Manor houses existed in most European countries where feudalism existed, where they were sometimes known as castles, palaces, and so on.

Casa do Aposento is an example of a traditional Madeiran Manor House, with several examples in the north of Madeira, especially in the village of Ponta Delgada, in the municipality of São Vicente. The majority of these type of constructions sit on agricultural land, owned by wine producers. In Madeira, these houses were designated as Manor Houses, although they have different characteristics from the typical Portuguese Manor Houses built across the mainland. Casa do Aposento was erected in the 18th century, as can be seen Casa do engraved on a stone dated 1746. It stands on the royal pathway, at the Aposento Açougue (butcher´s shop) place, with its main body being rectangular, was the enhanced by a tower with windows cut in a strategic fashion, facing both property of sea and mountain. It´s characterized by the use of symmetrical rectangular Maria Hilária windows with double wooden shutters and a glass scuttle in one of them, Diniz Abreu framed by local basaltic ashlars. The primitive roof is a typical Madeiran four de Freitas sided one, covered in tubular tiles with double eaves. (1913-2003), Nearby, there is a water mill and some structures that were used both as born in Ponta stables and accommodation areas for the field workers. Delgada. The Manor House underwent a few important renovations throughout the 20th century. Originally, the area surrounding the main house had a pebbled floor and the access to the wine storage area, where enormous wine barrels were kept, paved with big slabs of stone. This outdoor area had an extended vine tree that spread a pleasant shade onto the ground floor. The living quarters are accessed by stairs on each side of the building, having one of these around window framed by local basaltic ashlar. Casa do Aposento was the property of Maria Hilária Diniz Abreu de Freitas (1913-2003), born in Ponta Delgada. She left her home and its contents to the Autonomous Region of Madeira so as to exhibit her art collection and impart knowledge of all northern traditions of Madeira, especially Ponta Delgada, to all those who would visit. The contents include Madeiran furniture, manufactured from Madeira Mahogany, Madeira Laurel, and Chestnut wood from the late 18th and early 19th century, following the English models built at the time. A wooden settee with reeded legs, a sculpted figure of Saint Anthony, a sculpture of Our Lady of Sorrows, and a rectangular mirror with two garlands are just a few of the pieces that make up the collection. Casa do Aposento was classified in 1993 as a building of local cultural value, and in 2001 as a building of municipal cultural interest.

Outro conjunto, mais eclético, é marcado pelo mobiliário inglês, mas também português de finais do século XVIII e XIX. No mobiliário nacional deve destacar-se um canapé de pau santo, em estilo D. José I, com seu espaldar recortado e pernas galbadas. Do conjunto refira-se especialmente um Santo António, escultura em madeira estofada, policromada e dourada, datável de meados do século XVII, de uma boa oficina regional. A mesma origem pode ter uma Nossa Senhora da Piedade, também na coleção. De uma oficina portuguesa, de meados do século XVII, é uma pintura a óleo sobre tela, posta numa moldura de meados do século XIX, representando Nossa Senhora com o Menino. Trata-se de uma obra informada dos valores lumínicos da produção ibérica e mesmo italiana de efeitos tenebristas. Na coleção, ainda especial referência para um espelho de madeira entalhada e dourada, de uma oficina nacional ao tempo de D. Maria I, de finais do século XVIII, inícios do século XIX. Apresenta forma retangular com duas grinaldas de belo efeito. Devem destacar-se dois espelhos portugueses dourados de meados do século XIX. No conjunto da doação mencione-se um alargado número de objetos de uso doméstico, que caracterizam as cozinhas, quartos de dormir ou mesmo da casa de jantar madeirense de meados do século XIX. Especial nota para as loiças inglesas, em faiança, estampadas da mesma época. O Solar do Aposento foi classificado como imóvel de valor cultural local em 1993 e em 2001, como imóvel de interesse municipal.
Organicamente foi decidida a geminação e a tutela da Casa do Aposento ao Museu Quinta das-Cruzes. Para além da operacionalidade administrativa, entendeu-se que faria sentido a ligação das duas estruturas, salvaguardadas as respetivas dimensões, na medida em que o Museu Quinta das Cruzes, como quinta funchalense, tem por reverso uma casa agrícola, ajudando a rastrear as diferenças e proximidades entre a construção em espaço urbano e rural. À apresentação inaugural das coleções do Aposento, foram adicionadas peças provindas das coleções do Museu Quinta das Cruzes, para uma mais coerente harmonização de períodos estilísticos, e reforçar a dimensão de casa ao gosto madeirense do século XIX e de boa parte do século XX.

A Casa do Aposento constitui-se como uma tradicional casa madeirense abastada, na tradição arquitetónica insular, com exemplos bem presentes na costa norte e particularmente na freguesia de Ponta Delgada, concelho de São Vicente. Grande parte destas construções vinculavam-se em propriedades agrícolas, de maior ou menor dimensão, e ligadas à produção do vinho. Na Madeira a estas casas se deu a designação de solar, ganhando características diferentes dos solares em contexto nacional. Trata-se de uma construção de meados do século XVIII, como pode ver-se numa inscrição em pedra a data de 1746, provavelmente erguida sobre construção mais antiga. Situa-se junto ao caminho real no sítio do Açougue, com corpo principal retangular, onde se destaca a meio da construção uma torre altaneira com janelas viradas ao mar e à serra, num posicionamento estratégico. Como propriedade agrícola fazia acompanhar-se de várias dependências, por exemplo, a ocupação de todo o piso térreo de lojas ou armazéns de vinho junto a um lagar. Nas imediações existe mesmo um moinho de água e são visíveis outras construções no intramuros da propriedade, que devem corresponder a antigos estábulos e casas de meeiros. O solar sofreu algumas transformações importantes ao longo do século XX, como a construção de acrescentos junto à cozinha e a adaptação de uma pequena dependência, a capela. O logradouro, junto da casa, era primitivamente empedrado de calhau rolado e também lajeado por grandes placas de pedra no acesso às lojas de arrecadação das grandes pipas de vinho. Neste pátio existia uma grande latada de vinha que sombreava o rés-do-chão. Quer na vizinha freguesia de São Vicente, quer em Boaventura, existem várias casas de tradição, conhecidas por solares, tendo Ponta Delgada outros interessantes exemplos como a o Solar do Ladrilho, da família do escritor Horácio Bento de Gouveia, a Casa do Pico, construção altaneira colocada sobre dramático cenário, com sua torre avistando o mar, referida por Agustina Bessa-Luís, em A Corte do Norte, conhecida também, por casa dos Meninos da Beira. A Casa do Aposento era propriedade da Sr.ª D. Maria Hilária Diniz Abreu de Freitas (1913-2003), filha de Augusto Joaquim de Abreu e de Maria da Conceição dos Reis Pestana, nascida em Ponta Delgada. Já viúva de António de Freitas Júnior legou, por testamento, à Região Autónoma da Madeira a Casa do Aposento com seu recheio para ser instalada uma estrutura museológica, dando a conhecer as suas coleções artísticas a todos os visitantes, curiosos das tradições do norte da Madeira e de Ponta Delgada. Do recheio da Casa do Aposento, doado à Região, deve antes de mais referir-se uma característica, a de ter na sua maioria sido adquirido no mercado antiquário regional e outra parte ser constituído por herança familiar.
