The three chief captains and families began the settlement of Madeira and Porto Santo islands, a process defined by stages involving people from all over the kingdom. It was from the Algarve that some of the main settlers set out, with the important task of the landlord system employment. It is also essential to mention the settlers who came from the north of Portugal, namely from the region of Entre Douro and Minho, they were the ones who intervened specifically in the organization of the agricultural area.

From the Algarve, from the towns of Tavira, Lagos, Silves, Aljezur and Sagres, several people engaged in this movement of settlement towards the new Kingdom Islands. Servants, squires, knights and noblemen are identified as the ones who secured the beginning of the settlement, that quickly extended geographically to other areas, such as Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol and Calheta.

The Heirs of the Donee's Captains July, 3 | Machico – Solar do Ribeirinho The exhibition of the first Donee Captains in Madeira, Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and Gonçalves Zarco is proposed in the context of the 16th Century Market project

by Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico.

The purpose is to acknowledge the men who led the colonization process of these Atlantic islands.

It also serves as a mark and commemoration of Madeira’s 600 years by reviving and reinforcing the connection of the community to its heritage and its past.

Aimed for students, residents and tourists.

600 anos da descoberta do Arquipélago da Madeira O povoamento Os três capitães-donatários e famílias deram início ao Povoamento das ilhas da Madeira e Porto Santo, um processo faseado, em que participaram pessoas de todo o reino. Do Algarve, partiram, alguns dos principais colonizadores, com funções importantes na implementação das bases do sistema do senhorio. Podemos também referir neste processo o norte de Portugal, nomeadamente a região de Entre Douro e Minho, origem daqueles que intervieram especificamente na organização do espaço agrícola.

Do Algarve, das localidades de Tavira, Lagos, Silves, Aljezur e Sagres, registam-se também a deslocação de diversas pessoas rumo às novas ilhas do Reino. Enumeram-se criados, escudeiros, cavaleiros e fidalgos que marcaram o início do povoamento, que rapidamente se foi estendendo geograficamente a outras áreas, tais como Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol e Calheta.

Feast of St. Peter June, 27 - 29 | Ribeira Brava  www.cm-ribeirabrava.pt The Feast of St. Peter is characterised by an atmosphere typical of the religious festivities where food and beverage stalls can be found. These festivities culminate at midnight with a fireworks display, filling up the skies of this locality with light and colour.

Performances include the Portuguese singers Virgul, Matias Damásio, Vânia Fernandes, and internacional Dj's Gio Di Leva. th

Feast of St John June, 21st - 26th | Porto Santo  www.cm-portosanto.pt The Feast of St. John is one of the main and most famous popular attractions of Porto Santo Island, standing out for its popular saint’s march integrating several groups dressed appropriately for the occasion and parading through the main streets of the city centre to the sound of popular music, crackling bonfires and sweet basil scent in the air.

As Festas de São João, constituem um dos maiores cartazes turísticos da ilha do Porto Santo, cujo ponto alto culmina com as Marchas Populares, nas quais vários grupos de figurantes vestidos a preceito desfilam pelas principais artérias da cidade, envolvida pelo som de músicas populares e pelo cheiro dos manjericos e das fogueiras.

O município da Ribeira Brava organiza as tradicionais marchas populares em tributo a São Pedro. É um evento caracterizado pelas tradicionais travessias nocturnas de barcos engalanados e pelas marchas populares em tributo a S. Pedro. Há barracas distribuídas pelo centro da cidade, onde é confecionada e servida a tradicional espetada madeirense com o bolo do caco. Destaca-se também a actuação de Virgul, Matias Damásio, Vânia Fernandes e o o DJ italiano Gio Di Leva que promete animação musical pela noite dentro.

June 21st - 22nd | Calheta  www.cmcalheta.pt The municipality of Calheta hosts the popular festivities. This year's edition features famous national singer Ana Moura, Mastiksoul and international DJs Bassjackers, from tomorrowland.

Os festejos em honra do padroeiro, a música e marchas populares são alguns dos pontos altos destas festas. Este ano, a sessão solene terá lugar na quarta-feira, dia 21 e as marchas de São João percorrerão a Av D. Manuel I, no sábado.

As festas da Calheta trazem à Madeira a fadista Ana Moura, bem como os Djs internacionais Bassjackers e Mastiksoul.

July 8th - 9th | Santana  www.cm-santana.com This popular ethnographic festival plays an important role in the promotion of the cultural heritage and the gastronomic traditional aspects of this ward, which is located in the northern coast of Madeira Island.

The festival is held in the city centre and brings together several regional and national folk dance groups that invite everyone to enjoy good moments of great entertainment during 24 hours.

Este festival etnográfico constitui uma referência a nível regional e nacional na dinamização e promoção do património cultural e das tradições gastronómicas deste emblemático município situado na costa norte da ilha da Madeira.

O certame reúne vários ranchos folclóricos regionais e nacionais que proporcionam bons momentos de muita animação e cultura durante 24 horas.

NOS Madeira Summer Opening July, 20th - 22nd | Funchal  www.nossummeropening.com The Santa Catarina Park, in Funchal, will host the sixth edition of the Madeira Summer Opening, an urban music festival that features Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Rock, Rap and Reggae rock music.

This year's edition features famous national and international bands and singers such as Mallu Magalhães, Mishlawi, Wet Bed Gang (20), Richie Campbell, Slow J, Piruka (21) and Salvador Sobral (22).

Esta será a sexta edição deste festival urbano, inserido num contexto natural e único, cujo pano de fundo será o Parque de Santa Catarina, a decorrer de 20 a 22 de julho.

June, 27th - 30th | Câmara de Lobos  www.cm-camaradelobos.pt The municipality of Câmara de Lobos hosts the popular saints’ marches in honour of Saint Peter. Performances include the Portuguese singer Fernando Daniel and the popular band HMB. O município de Câmara de Lobos promove entre 27 de junho e 1 de julho as tradicionais marchas populares em tributo a São Pedro, na qual participam vários grupos e marchantes, com início agendado para as 21h30 horas.

Pela meia-noite e após as marchas, realiza-se o tradicional espetáculo piromusical, na Baía de Câmara de Lobos.

Este evento conta com a participação de artistas de referência no panorama musical nacional como HMB e Fernando Daniel.

July, 12th - 14th | Funchal  ww.funchaljazzfestival.org The Funchal Jazz Festival is held in the gardens of the Santa Catarina Park.

The first night of the festival will be starring Ricardo Toscano Quarteto and Jazzmeia Horn. The Vijay Iyer Sextet and Billy Hart 4Tet W/ Joshua Redman are the starts of the second night. The Jazz legends Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain & Chris Potter will be closing the festival with Jason Moran & The Bandwagon also performing.

O Funchal Jazz Festival, evento organizado pela Câmara Municipal do Funchal, decorre nos Jardins do Parque Santa Catarina.

O grande destaque do programa é o Vijay Iyer Sextet, que irá apresentar o melhor disco de 2017, “Far From Over”. O festival vai ainda apresentar concertos de Ricardo Toscano Quarteto, trio Dave Holland / Zakir Hussain / Chris Potter, Jazzmeia Horn, Billy Hart Quartet feat. Sea Week July 23rd - 29th | Porto Moniz  ww.portomoniz.pt This is one of the most outstanding events in the calendar of events of the northern municipality of Porto Moniz. The event consists of a program filled with recreational and sports activities. Several competitions take place like, boat rides, canoe races, cultural and sports activities will be held, as well as the Sea Games, which include the participation of teams from various municipalities of the island.

Performances include the famous singer Anselmo Ralph, Quim Barreiros and international Dj's Niels van Gogh and Thomas Gold.

Esta iniciativa reúne um vasto programa de atividades lúdicas e desportivas. Para além da música, onde destaca-se Anselmo Ralph e Quim Barreiros, juntamente com os DJs internacionais Niels van Gogh and Thomas Gold, são realizados vários concursos, passeios marítimos, regatas de canoa, atividades culturais, desportivas e os Jogos do Mar, que contam com a presença de equipas dos vários municípios da região.

Com esta iniciativa pretende-se promover os aromas e sabores típicos da gastronomia regional, nomeadamente o Caldo da Romaria, a Sopa de Cebola, as sopas de trigo, agrião, milho malhado e a açorda madeirense.

Day of the Autonomous Region of Madeira July 1st | Madeira www.visitmadeira.pt The Autonomy of Madeira is celebrated on this day with several proceedings like the Official Ceremonial tribute held at the Regional Legislative Assembly; the placing of flowers at the Statue of Autonomy by regional official entities; and the “Te Deum” religious ceremony that takes place at Funchal’s Cathedral. July 1st is a public holiday in Madeira Islands.

Madeira Atlantic Festival (29th Edition) The Madeira Atlantic Festival, an event that sets the beginning of the summer season in Madeira, is one of the most recent tourist entertainment events. This event consists of a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, with emphasis on the pyromusical shows; the Atlantic Roots Festival and the Regional Arts Week.

Saturdays The pyromusical shows are held on four consecutive Saturdays of the month of June, at 10:30 p.m. at the pier outside Pontinha.

These wonderful and exciting performances, lasting about 20 minutes each, combine fireworks and music in a unique experience for tourists and residents, to be held on June 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.

In these shows, companies will compete for a trophy awarded by public vote, through the Internet and boxes located in strategic places in Funchal city (City Pier – day of the show, La Vie, Marina Shopping, Av. Arriaga Tourism Office).

Other initiatives that are included on the schedule: Regional Bread Fair The Regional Bread Fair is an event organised by the Funchal Lions Club for over 20 years ,with the purpose of raising funds for

the club’s charity works. Each installment of this event includes entertainment by folk groups in the mornings and afternoons of each festival day, and a Serenade after the fireworks.

Atlantic Roots Festival This three-day festival (June 14th to 16th) aims to reach a more demanding and diversified audience, as well as, to attain a greater international projection for this festival contributing to heighten the Regions cultural offer,an event which will be integrated in the celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo.

This year’s edition presents some novelties, new brand, image, programme, concept and location (Praça do Povo) a festival which combines different genres, sounds, as well as new musical trends of artistic quality.

The first night of the festival will be dedicated to national music,

and the second to new sounds and trends such as Black Music, Soul or Funk. The final and third night of this festival features the excellence of Portuguese music.

This edition features some wellknown regional, national and international performers starring such as Rosa Soares (Brazil), the band Brigada Vitor Jara ( Portugal, Lura (Cape Vert) and the Xarabanda band (Madeira) among others.

Regional Arts Week This is an event organized by the Regional Art Education Association - AREArtística, intended to showcase the learning and artistic skills of Madeiran students, acquired during school, through various activities that will be held in the city centre, specifically the "Feast at the Gardens", the Regional Artistic Meetings, the Regional Exhibition of Artistic Expression, and ESCOLartes. The programme includes several artistic perfor-

O Festival do Atlântico é o evento que marca o início da época de Verão na Madeira, e consiste num diversificado conjunto de iniciativas culturais distribuídas ao longo do mês de junho, sendo de realçar os espetáculos piromusicais, o Festival Raízes do Atlântico e a Semana Regional das Artes.

Sábados Os espetáculos piromusicais decorrem nos quatro sábados consecutivos do mês de junho, pelas 22h30, no molhe exterior da Pontinha. Estes espetáculos maravilhosos e emocionantes, com duração aproximada de 20 minutos cada, conjugam fogo-deartifício e música numa experiência única para visitantes e residentes, a realizar nos dias 9, 16, 23 e 30 junho 2018.

Estes espetáculos colocam em competição empresas que disputam um troféu atribuído por votação do público, através da Internet e tômbolas colocadas em locais estratégicos da cidade do Funchal (Cais da cidade - dia do espetáculo, La Vie, Marina Shopping e Turismo).

Feira Regional do Pão A Feira Regional do Pão é um evento organizado pelo Lions Clube do Funchal há mais de 20 anos com o objetivo angariar fundos para obras sociais do clube.

Esta edição decorre na Placa Central da Avenida Arriaga entre os dias 8 e 10 de junho.

Festival Raízes do Atlântico Depois das novidades apresentadas em anteriores edições deste festival, em que o Raízes do Atlântico se apresentou ao público como um festival renovado em termos de imagem, programação e conceito, a edição deste ano terá novamente a duração de três dias, mantendo como objetivos uma maior internacionalização e o reforço da oferta cultural da Região.

Outra das novidades desta edição prende-se com o

local de realização deste evento, cujos espetáculos terão lugar na Praça do Povo entre os dias 14 e 16 de junho, integrados nas comemorações dos 600 anos da Descoberta das ilhas da Madeira e do Porto Santo. Popular Saints Festivities The Popular Saints Festivities are celebrations that are held in several countries, historically related to the summer solstice pagan festival, which was celebrated on June 24th. The Autonomous Region of Madeira is no exception, and a bit throughout the Region, the month of June is synonymous with celebrations in praise of the three Popular Saints: Saint Anthony, Saint

John and Saint Peter. The Saint John altars, which constitute a festivity based in a neighbourhood tradition, in addition to the traditional food of the Popular Saints, holds a public contest of the Altars to the patron Saint. It takes place every year during the week that includes Saint John’s Day, usually the last week of June. It is held in Rua da Figueira Preta, Travessa dos Reis, Rua da Conceição and Praça do Carmo.

Brief History On 1st July 1419, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira disembarked on the beach of Machico, beginning the era of Portuguese discoveries. On the beach a Mass was celebrated in thanksgiving for their safe arrival. On 8th May 1440, Henry ‘the Navigator’ awarded Tristão Vaz and his descendants the Captaincy of Machico. Still in the 15th century, taking advantage of the abundant water and excellent climate, the first colonists began to cultivate sugar cane, and the first machinery used to process the pulp appeared immediately, facilitating the export to Europe. Machico grew to this lucrative commerce, while many families became socially powerful and wealthy from the trade, including Tristão Vaz’s descendants. It was the Teixeira family that erected the first Church in Machico at the end of the 15th century, in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of Conception). During the second half of the 15th century, in 1451, Machico was elevated to ‘town’ and continued to grow.

Today, the economy is focused on agriculture, tourism, and fishing, although a small number of businesses and commercial establishments have concentrated in the center of town. Machico will host the 13th edition of the 16th-century Market under the motto "The heirs of Tristão", an event that evokes the historical period of the discovery of the island, which has gained a prominent cultural status. Moinho a Água São Jorge Moinho a Água is the last running watermill that remains functional in Achadinha, São Jorge, in Madeira.

A visit to the famous watermill will certainly be an enlightning experience seeing that visitors can observe how the population used the force of water for their survival in the yonder years.

The watermill, which is more than 300 years old, was recently restored and is fed by the waters of the Levada do Rei. It is maintained by miller Lino Albino Mendonça.

Today, the population still uses the watermill to grind wheat, maize, barley and rye just as in the past.

O Moinho a Água, em São Jorge, constitui o último moinho de água ainda em funcionamento na Madeira, com uma idade superior a 300 anos. Aqui podemos observar como a população usava a força motriz da água para a sua subsistência.

Este Moinho encontra-se no sítio da Achadinha, em São Jorge, e foi recentemente restaurado e mantido pelo moleiro Lino Albino Mendonça, sendo alimentado pelas águas da Levada do Rei. Ainda hoje a população recorre ao moinho de água para moer

trigo, milho, cevada e centeio, tal como se fazia antigamente. É, sem dúvida, um bom exemplo de preservação do património e das tradições da Madeira. Uma tradição secular que desperta a atenção de turistas e residentes que por ali passam.

O moinho a água, com paredes de pedra, guarda também algumas peças utilizadas nas casas em outros tempos. Objectos em barro, candeeiros a petróleo, artigos talhados em madeira.

Memórias do passado agora em exposição e preservadas, ao longo das últimas décadas.

Bolo de Mirtilo e limão

Ingredientes:

• 175 g de manteiga sem sal • 175 g de açúcar refinado • 225g de farinha c/ fermento • 50g de amêndoas moí-

Preparação:

Ingredients

• 3 large eggs • 1 lemon, zest and 1/2 the juice • 100g blueberries • Icing sugar, to dust

Preparation: 1) Preheat oven to 180c and grease and line a medium-large loaf tin 2) Put the blueberries into a bowl and coat them with 1 tbsp of the flour 3) Put the butter, flour, sugar, almonds, eggs and the zest & juice of the lemon in a separate bowl and mix together until well combined and smooth

6) Gently dust with icing sugar to decorate.

1) Pré-aqueça o forno a 180ºC. Unte com margarina e polvilhe com farinha uma forma de tamanho médio.

2) Coloque os mirtilos numa tigela e cubra-os com uma colher de sopa de farinha.

3) Coloque a manteiga, a farinha, o açúcar, as amêndoas, os ovos, as raspas e o sumo do limão numa tigela e misture bem.

4) Junte os mirtilos cobertos com farinha na mistura e adicione tudo a forma nivelando a massa para ficar homogénea.

5) Leve ao forno durante 1 hora. Retire e deixe repousar durante 10 minutos, para então poder desenformar.

6) Polvilhe delicadamente com açúcar para decorar o bolo.

Oriental Gardens

During a trip to China and Japan José Berardo became enchanted by their history, culture and way of life and by the influence of the Portuguese on the Orient over 200 years.

As such, the two oriental gardens are an attempt to recreate that culture, linked to Buddhism, with its respect for Nature and its highly symbolic elements.

At the entrance to the Oriental garden in the Northern area, there are two marble Fo dogs, mythical animals from the Orient usually found at the entrance to temples, acting as guards. There is a moveable ball in their halfopen mouths which, according to the Chinese belief, brings good luck to those who give it one complete turn.

The decoration is based on the oriental style, and thus various pagodas may be found, originally intended to house relics or to mark a holy places.

Apart from these, the visitor may also observe Buddhist sculptures, a dragon in mar-

ble surrounded by children representing fertility, stone seats with oriental decorations, and several lanterns, also in stone.

Water is also an important decorative feature in the form of lakes and waterfalls, with miniature islands and ornamental bridges.

Next to the lakes containing Koi fish, two bamboo ornaments in the shape of pipes are to be seen. When these become filled with water and it is discharged into the lake, the resulting noise, apart from frightening away the birds, represents the passing of time.

From Asia we can find a species of cycad, Cyca revolute and in both the oriental gardens we come across various tree ferns, whose lush green vegetation contrasts with the red and black of the bridges and railings.

There are also flowering plants such as the camellia, a shrub with evergreen leaves, highly valued for the number of attractive flowers that bloom, above all, in the winter and spring.

Jardins Orientais Durante uma viagem à China, José Berardo ficou maravilhado com a história, cultura e modo de vida, especialmente, pela influência dos Portugueses no Oriente durante 200 anos. Os dois jardins orientais são uma tentativa de recriar essa cultura, ligada ao Budismo, com o seu respeito pela Natureza e os seus elementos simbólicos bastante demarcados. À entrada do Jardim Oriental, nas áreas a Norte, há dois cães de Fó, em mármore, animais míticos do Oriente geralmente encontrados nas entradas dos templos, actuando como guardiães. Nas suas bocas entreabertas encontra-se uma bola móvel que, de acordo com a crença chinesa, dá boa sorte àqueles que lhe derem uma volta completa.

A decoração tem por base o estilo oriental e por isso, podem ver-se vários pagodes, que originalmente tinham por finalidade alojar relíquias ou marcar locais sagrados.

Para além destes, o visitante pode também observar esculturas Budistas, tais

como, um dragão em mármore rodeado por crianças representando a fertilidade, bancos de pedra com decorações orientais e várias lanternas também em pedra.

Importa ainda referir uma componente fulcral neste tipo de jardins, a água, que abunda nas lagoas e cascatas, com ilhas e pontes ornamentais. Ao lado das lagoas dos peixes Koi, encontram-se dois ornamentos em bambu em forma de cachimbo.

Quando estes ficam cheios de água e a descarregam para a lagoa, o ruído que daí resulta, para além de afugentar os pássaros, sugere a passagem tempo.

Proveniente da Ásia encontra-se uma espécie de cica, a Cyca revoluta, e em ambos os jardins orientais vêem-se vários fetos arbóreos, cuja vegetação verde luxuriosa contrasta com o vermelho e preto das pontes e varões.

Existem ainda plantas como a camélia, Camellia japonica, de folhagem permanente, muito apreciadas pelo número de flores que produz, sobretudo, no Inverno e na Primavera.

Observing Madeira from the Sky You’ll find that there are plenty of things to see and do in Funchal. Some of the city’s most worthwhile attractions are way above sea level and best reached by cable car, but the journey is part of the fun.

History The route of the cable car was chosen to replace the old Monte Railway which ran from 1886-1943.

Construction of the cable car system began in September 1999; it was opened in November 2000 and has been in service since then. The bottom station is located at Almirante Reis Park in central Funchal. The length of the cable car line is 3,718 m and the height difference 560 m; the journey takes approximately 15 minutes. The cableway has over 39 cabins with 8 seats each, and can transport up to 800 passengers per hour. On the ride up to Monte, enjoy the amazing view of Funchal bay and surrounding landscape. Upon exiting the Monte station there is a snack bar and souvenir shop.

The Viewpoint of Vereda da Partilha The 850-meter-long Partilha trail, located in the parish of Quinta Grande, begins at Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco and ends at a slope overlooking the Fajã dos Padres.

This trail has recently undergone reconstruction to allow better access to the local agricultural vicinity of Vera Cruz. Moreover, a new viewpoint has also been added to the project.

Vereda da Partilha (O novo miradouro da Quinta Grande) A vereda da Partilha (com aprox. 850 metros de comprimento), localizada na freguesia da Quinta Grande, tem início na Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco e termina junto à vertente da encosta sobranceira à Fajã dos Padres. Este trilho foi recentemente alvo de obras de requalificação que vieram permitir um melhor acesso a área agrícola do sítio da Vera Cruz e incluíram a construção de um novo miradouro.

Este novo ponto de interesse turístico e paisagístico na freguesia da Quinta Grande, tem uma vista privilegiada para a zona da Fajã dos Padres e para a encosta de Campanário e permite uma pequena caminhada por entre os terrenos agrícolas.

Shearwater The Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) is a large shearwater in the seabird family Procellariidae. The genus name Calonectris comes from Ancient Greek kalos, "good" and nectris, "swimmer", and borealis is Latin for "northern". The English name is for the American ornithologist Charles B. Cory.

Ecology This species breeds on Madeira, the Azores and the Berlengas Archipelago in Portugal and the Canary Islands in Spain. They nest on open ground or among rocks or less often in a burrow where one white egg is laid. The burrow is visited at night to minimise predation from large gulls. In late summer and autumn, most birds migrate into the Atlantic as far north as the south-western coasts of Great Britain and Ireland. They return to the Mediterranean in February. The biggest colony is located in Savage Islands, Madeira. This bird flies with long glides, and always with wings bowed and angled slightly back, unlike the stiff, straight-winged flight of the similarly sized great shearwater. Cory's shearwater feeds on fish, molluscs and offal, and can dive deep (50 ft (15 m) or more) in search of prey. It readily follows fishing boats, where it indulges in noisy squabbles. This is a gregarious species, which can be seen in large numbers from ships or appropriate headlands. The Bay of Biscay ferries are particularly good for this species. It is silent at sea, but at night the breeding colonies are alive with raucous cackling calls.

Description This shearwater is identifiable by its size, at 45–56 cm (18–22 in) in length and with a 112–126 cm (44–50 in) wingspan. It has brownish-grey upperparts, white underparts and a yellowish bill. It lacks the brown belly patch, dark shoulder markings and black cap of the great shearwater.

Taxonomy Once considered two subspecies, (the Mediterranean C. d. diomedea, and the Atlantic C. d. borealis), Scopoli's shearwater and Cory's shearwater are now split into two distinct species. They are similar in appearance, although the Atlantic form is larger with a stouter bill. They are best distinguished by the pattern of the underwing. The Cape Verde shearwater C. edwardsii (Oustalet, 1883) was once considered a subspecies of Cory's shearwater but has recently been split off as a separate species (Snow, Perrins & Gillmor 1998). It is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands. It has an all dark, slim bill, and darker head and upperparts than Cory's. The flight has been described as rather more typically shearwater-like than the Cory's, with stiffer and more rapid wing beats.

Cagarra A cagarra é uma ave essencialmente pelágica, sendo regularmente observada a partir da costa durante a época reprodutora. Nas nossas águas alimenta-se principalmente de pequenos peixes pelágicos (e.g. sardinha, carapau, cavala, peixe-agulha) e de cefalópodes.

Nidifica exclusivamente em ilhas e ilhéus. Os ninhos localizam-se em cavidades naturais, como fendas nas rochas, ou sob amontoados de pedras, ou podem ser escavados pelas aves no solo, sendo muito raro encontrar ninhos expostos. Nas Selvagens, pela inexistência de perturbação e de predadores, nidifica no solo entre a vegetação rasteira.  Distribuição A cagarra reproduz-se em praticamente todas as ilhas e ilhéus dos arquipélagos das Berlengas, dos Açores e da Madeira.

No mar, a espécie ocorre em quase toda a ZEE portuguesa, encontrando-se muito raramente no inverno. As primeiras aves chegam às áreas de reprodução entre fevereiro e março, de acordo com a localização das colónias, e os últimos juvenis abandonam o ninho no início de novembro.  Evolução populacional Ocorre por todo o Arquipélago, com uma população que no mínimo atinge 40.000 indivíduos. Na Ilha da Madeira estima-se a população entre 2.200 e 3.800 indivíduos (Geraldes 2000), sendo superior a 29 540 casais em 2005 nas Ilhas Selvagens (Granadeiro JP, Dias M, Rebelo R, Santos C & Catry P, 2006). Os efectivos populacionais das Ilhas Desertas e Porto Santo, supõe-se que serão seguramente superiores a 3.000 e a 1.000 indivíduos, respectivamente.  Medidas de Conservação O principal local de nidificação desta ave está integrado na Reserva Natural das Ilhas Desertas e Ilhas Selvagens, e conta com o estatuto de Reserva Integral.

Madeira Blueberry

(Vaccinium Padifolium) Vaccinium Padifolium (Madeira blueberry) is very common at elevations between 800 and 1,700 metres (2,600 and 5,600 ft). It grows mainly in crevices and exposed slopes and mountain plains.

Fruits are used in preserves. It is endemic to the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, Portugal.

Description It is a semi-evergreen scrub to small tree 1.5–6 m tall. New branches are generally reddish and pubescent. Leaves are often flushed dark red in autumn 2.5–7 × 1–2(2.5) cm, oblong to elliptic, acute to acuminate, petiole short, pubescent. Calyx 3–4 mm, with five short, broad lobes up to 1.5 mm. Flowers on curved pedicels in erect, axillary, bracteate racemes. Corolla, 7–10 mm, globose to campanulate, the lobes very short. There are often five broad rose stripes on the white corolla. Berries up to 12 × 10 mm, ripening blue-black.

Chemistry The blue color of the berries is due to anthocyanins (Delphinidin 3-O-α-rhamnoside and anthocyanins triglycosides).

Secret “Uveira“ is a delicious blueberry that tastes great fresh as well as in pies, jams and pastries.

Uveira-da-serra A uveira-da-serra (Vaccinium padifolium) é um arbusto da família das Ericácias, que integra as associações arbustivas do último andar fitoclimático da Ilha da Madeira. Trata-se de uma espécie comum endémica da Madeira , sendo característica do urzal de substituição da floresta da Laurissilva do Til, surgindo entre os 800 e os 1700 metros de altitude.

Apresenta-se como um arbusto, ou pequena árvore, perenifólio com até 6 metros de altura, com ramos novos geralmente avermelhados e pubescentes, sendo as folhas oblongas a elípticas, de 2,5 a 7 centímetros de comprimento e 1 a 2,5 cm de largura, serrilhadas, muitas vezes avermelhadas e glabras com a excepção do pecíolo e nervura média da página inferior, que se apresenta pubescente.

As flores desta planta apresentam uma corola amarelo-esverdeada, maculada de vermelho, globosa a campanulada, com 7 a 10 milímetros, de lobos muito pequenos e recurvados, dispostas em rácimos axilares, com pedicelos curvos, ocorrendo a floração entre Maio e Agosto.

Para além de ser uma pioneira extraordinária no processo de recuperação da formação vegetal primitiva da cordilheira central, a uveira-da-serra produz, em abundância, bagas (O fruto desta planta é uma baga quase ovóide com até 12 por 10 mm, de tom preto-azulado quando maduro) ricas em vitamina A, com propriedades adstringentes, anti-inflamatórias e antioxidantes.

Estas bagas da Madeira são bastante agradáveis quando consumidos frescos e produzem uma excelente compota, que, segundo a tradição popular, deve ser usada contra a tosse e a gripe.

Mia Couto António Emílio Leite Couto (born 5 July 1955), better known as Mia Couto, is a Mozambican writer and the winner of the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Couto was born in the city of Beira, Mozambique's second largest city, where he was also raised and schooled. He was the host of the sixth edition of the Literary Festival of Madeira, which took place in April 2016.

He is the son of Portuguese emigrants who moved to the Portuguese colony in the 1950s. When he was 14, some of his poetry was published in a local newspaper, Notícias da Beira. Three years later, in 1971, he moved to the capital Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) and began to study medicine at the University of Lourenço Marques. During this time, the anti-colonial guerrilla and political movement FRELIMO was struggling to overthrow the Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique. In April 1974, after the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon and the overthrow of the Estado Novo regime, Mozambique was about to become an independent republic. In 1974, FRELIMO asked Couto to suspend his studies for a year to work as a journalist for Tribuna until September 1975 and then as the director of the newly created Mozambique Information Agency (AIM).

Later, he ran Tempo magazine until 1981. His first book of poems, Raiz de Orvalho, was

published in 1983; it included texts aimed against the dominance of Marxist militant propaganda. Couto continued working for the newspaper Notícias until 1985 when he resigned to finish his course of study in biology. Not only is Mia Couto considered one of the most important writers in Mozambique, but his works have been published in more than 20 countries and in various languages, including Portuguese, English, French, German, Czech, Italian, Serbian, Catalan and Estonian. In many of his texts, he undertakes to recreate the Portuguese language by infusing it with regional vocabulary and structures from Mozambique, thus producing a new model for the African narrative. Stylistically, his writing is influenced by magical realism, a movement popular in modern Latin American literatures, and his use of language is reminiscent of the Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa, but also deeply influenced by the baiano writer Jorge Amado. He has

been noted for creating proverbs, sometimes known as "improverbs", in his fiction, as well as riddles, legends, metaphors, giving his work a poetic dimension. An international jury at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair named his first novel, Terra Sonâmbula (Sleepwalking Land), one of the best 12 African books of the 20th century. In 2007, he became the first African author to win the prestigious Latin Union literary prize, which has been awarded annually in Italy since 1990. Mia Couto became only the fourth writer in the Portuguese language to take home this prestigious award, having competed against authors from Portugal, France, Colombia, Spain, Italy, and Senegal. Currently, he is a biologist employed by the Limpopo Transfrontier Park while continuing his work on other writing projects. Awards and honours include the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the 2013 Camões Prize and the 2007 Latin Union Prize.

Mia Couto Mia Couto (pseudônimo de Antônio Emílio Leite Couto) nasceu em Beira, Moçambique, na África, no dia 05 de julho de 1955. Sua paixão por gatos o fez adotar o pseudônimo de Mia.

Biografia Filho de imigrantes portugueses, com 14 anos teve seus poemas publicados no jornal “Notícias da Beira”. Em 1971 muda-se para a capital Lourenço Marques (hoje Maputo), onde estudou Medicina, sem concluir o curso. Exerceu a função de jornalista na “Tribuna” e no “Jornal de Notícias”. Foi diretor da Agência de Informações de Moçambique.

Em 1983, Mia Couto publica seu primeiro livro de poesias “Raiz de Orvalho”, onde aborda as representações dos sonhos para refazer a memória do país e recuperar a identidade que o processo de colonização desmantelou. Em 1992, publicou “Terra Sonâmbula”, que foi considerado um dos melhores livros africanos do século XX. É um romance escrito em prosa poética, que compõe uma bela fábula que nos ensina a sonhar, mesmo nas condições mais adversas. Nos versos de “Poema Mestiço”, Mia Couto busca a identidade, além de uma esperança que é depositada no futuro, expressando o desejo de mudança.

Além de considerado um dos escritores mais importantes de Moçambique, é o escritor moçambicano mais traduzido. Em muitas das suas obras, Mia Couto tenta recriar a língua portuguesa com uma influência moçambicana, utilizando o léxico de várias regiões do país e produzindo um novo modelo de narrativa africana. A 25 de Novembro de 1998 foi feito Comendador da Ordem Militar de Sant'Iago da Espada.

Em 2013 foi homenageado com o Prémio Camões, que lhe foi entregue a 10 de Junho no Palácio de Queluz pelas mãos do presidente de Portugal Cavaco Silva e da presidente do Brasil, Dilma Rousseff.

Mia Couto tem uma obra literária extensa e diversificada, incluindo poesia, contos, romance e crónicas.

Muitos dos livros de Mia Couto são publicados em mais de 22 países e traduzidos em alemão, francês, castelhano, catalão, inglês e italiano.

Geology

Madeira presents its visitors with extraordinary landscapes and views where the peculiarities of the Macaronesia environment and a wide variety of endemic fauna and flora species can be cherished.

In its geomorphological configuration resides one of its main natural attractions. The altitude of the island and the complexity of its terrain contribute to the diversity of micro-climates conducing to the existence of several habitats.

The territory of Madeira corresponds to the immersed part of a volcanic edifice which rises from the ocean floor (from depths of about 4000 meters) up to 1861 meters above sea level (Pico Ruivo). The contrasts that occur at coastal level with submerged deltas and volcanic deposits, large cliffs and large deep valleys, all this wealth is the natural and geographical estate of Madeira.

Descrição sumária Este geossítio permite observar em detalhe, ou numa visão de conjunto, as sequências de derrames basálticos subaéreos e depósitos conglomeráticos e brechóides (de tipo lahar) da Formação da Penha d’Águia (CVM2), pertencentes ao Complexo Vulcânico Intermédio.

Devido à sua integridade e representatividade, este conjunto de afloramentos deve ser usado como local de referência na caracterização da referida formação estratigráfica, num contexto de Património Geológico.

Este sítio foi escolhido em detrimento daquele que se localiza na região de Penha d’Águia (local que dá o nome à formação estratigráfica e define o seu estratótipo simples), pelo seu fácil acesso e excelentes condições de visibilidade. Aqui, a diversidade de elementos geológicos é também de valor superior.

In Foz da Ribeira de São Vicente a spectacular prismatic or columnar joint can be observed on a thick basaltic flow.

The columnar joint is a typical internal structure common in volcanic rocks. It is one of the most spectacular prismatic joints of Madeira Island.

The cooling of the lava gives rise to the formation of fractures as a result of tensions generated by contraction, thus obtaining the designated columnar or prismatic joints (the different columns present a prismatic shape). The development of the columns is commonly perpendicular to the cooling surface. It is also possible to observe these basaltic rocks in pentagonal columns, perfectly aligned and carved as of human intervention. This area has undoubtedly a great geological, scientific, volcanic and geomorphological interest.

The beaches here are extremely popular with bathers, mostly because of the warm and sparkling water. The beaches of Madeira are only a glimpse into the extensive natural beauty of the island.

Blue Flags The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach, marina or sustainable boating tourism operator meets its stringent standards. FEE's Blue Flag criteria include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.

A total of 332 Portuguese beaches have been awarded the blue flag testifying to the quality of their waters, up 12 as compared to last year. Thanks to the natural beauty and excellent state of conservation of Madeira’s beaches, 14 bathing areas on the Madeira Islands have been awarded the "blue flag” for this summer, plus three Marinas and 3 embarcações ecoturísticas.

 Complexo Balnear da Barreirinha Just next to the São Tiago Fortress, the Barreirinha Bathing Complex offers direct access to the sea.  Complexo do Lido The pools of Lido are the most popular pools in Funchal.  Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda The Complex includes two salt-water pools, one for adults and the other one for children.  Complexo Doca do Cavacas Better known as Doca do Cavacas, this is a small beach complex with a natural swimming pool of volcanic origin and direct access to the sea.  Complexo da Praia Formosa This beach is the largest public beach in Madeira.  Praia de São Tiago Located near the Fort of São Tiago, it is a small public beach which has become a hotspot for diving.  Praia do Vigário Vigário is a pebbled beach located in the city centre of Câmara de Lobos.  Piscinas das Salinas Located near Câmara de Lobos bay, the Salinas natural swimming pools are part of a bathing complex, surrounded by green areas with a swimming pool for adults and the other one for children.  Complexo da Ribeira Brava The Complex consists of a pebbled beach mixed with black sand, protected from the waves by wave-breakers.

 Praia da Fajã dos Padres Nestled at the foot of the right side of Cabo Girão, it is accessible only by boat or by the Quinta Grande lift.  Zona Balnear da Ponta do Sol The beach, hidden away in a small cove in the village of Ponta do Sol, is a small pebbled beach with excellent water quality.  Praias da Madalena do Mar Praia da Madalena do Mar is a pebbled beach where one can enjoy a peaceful day out.  Praia de Areia da Calheta The man-made yellow sandy beach of Calheta village features a sunbathing area of about 7,300 m2.  Piscinas Naturais do Porto Moniz The natural swimming pools at Porto Moniz are formed by volcanic lava, naturally filled with crystal-clear sea water.  Praia do Porto do Seixal The Seixal Port offers a black sandy beach surrounded by an impressive view over Madeira’s north coast.  Complexo de São Vicente This Complex has a sunbathing area with direct sea access, restaurant, bar, gym, parking and a 620m long promenade.  Complexo do Calhau de São Jorge Located at the mouth of the São Jorge River, in addition to a small fresh water lagoon, the Calhau de São Jorge Beach Complex has three swimming pools.

 Complexo da Foz da Ribeira do Faial Located at Ribeira do Faial, it features a natural swimming pool, a range of recreational areas and supporting infrastructure.  Praia da Banda d' Além Located in the bay of Machico, is an artificial golden sandy beach with supporting infrastructure for bathers.  Praia da Prainha Prainha, not far away from the tip of São Lourenço (Caniçal), is a black sandy beach of volcanic origin. The Piedade Dunes, which contain limestone fossils of geomorphologic interest, can be found there.  Complexo Balnear do Caniçal Located in the Caniçal village sea front this Complex has two salt water swimming pools, one for adults and the other for children, as well as direct access to the sea.  Complexo do Porto da Cruz Located at the seafront promenade of Porto da Cruz, this Complex includes two swimming pools and a range of infrastructure to support bathers.  Praia das Palmeiras Located in Santa Cruz, this pebbled beach offers visitors two swimming pools (for adults and children), changing rooms, showers, WC and first aid facilities.  Praia dos Reis Magos Located in Caniço de Baixo, the Reis Magos beach has crystal clear sea water and a small pebbled beach.  Praia do Garajau Excellent scuba diving conditions can be found at the Garajau beach.

A Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa anunciou que 14 praias da Madeira vão hastear este ano a bandeira azul, um galardão ambiental atribuído anualmente às praias, marinas e portos de recreio que cumpram um conjunto de critérios de gestão ambiental, educação ambiental, informação, qualidade da água balnear, serviços e segurança dos utentes.

Na ilha da Madeira são 11 e 3 no Porto Santo. O Funchal é o concelho que apresenta maior número de praias galardoadas (Praia do Areeiro, Praia Formosa, Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda - Poços do Governador, Clube Naval do Funchal e Complexo Balnear do Lido), seguido do Porto Santo (Fontinha, Cabeço da Ponta, Ribeiro Salgado) e Santa Cruz (Palmeiras e Reis Magos). Os municípios do Porto Moniz (Piscinas naturais), Santana (Ribeira do Faial) e São Vicente (Complexo Balnear de Ponta Delgada) contam com uma praia galardoada, cada um.

Quanto às novidades deste ano, o galardão foi entregue à Praia da Ribeira Brava e ao Porto de Recreio da Calheta.

As marinas galardoadas em 2018 são a Marina do Funchal e a Marina da Quinta do Lorde,em Machico. Foram igualmente premiadas 3 embarcações de ecoturismo: Prazer do Mar, Melhor do Mar e Natureza do Mar.

Stª Luzia’s Remnants of the “White Gold Era” The first Portuguese settlers began colonizing the islands around 1420 or 1425. The Captains that led the first settlement, along with their respective families, a small group of minor nobility, and some prisoners, who could be trusted to work the lands.

To gain the minimum conditions for the development of agriculture, they had to cut down a large number of trees and construct a numerous water channels, also known as “levadas”. During this period, the settlers relied on fish for about half of their diet, together with vegetables and fruits cultivated from small cleared areas of land. Initially, these colonists produced wheat for their own subsistence, but later exported a surplus to mainland Portugal.

Eventually, grain production fell and the crisis forced Henry the Navigator to order other commercial crops to be planted so that the island could be profitable. The planting of sugarcane, and later Sicilian sugar beet,

A Glimpse at the Past

Stª Luzia’s Remnants of the “White Gold Era” The district of Santa Luzia has a beautiful garden and park situated in the heart of Funchal. Inaugurated on September 27th 2004, this heavenly area used to be the Hilton factory, where liquor and sugar was produced. The old chimney still stands as a reminder of the bygone days when sugarcane production was the primary engine of the island’s economy. Original machinery are also on display for all to see and enjoy the treasures of the “White Gold Era”. The garden consists of 13,700 square metres of green area, including five different themed gardens: the Tropical Garden (Jardim Tropical), the Water Garden (Jardim da Água), the Terrace Garden (Jardim dos Socalcos), the Amphitheatre Garden (Jardim do Anfiteatro) and the Laurissilva "laurel forest" Garden (Jardim da Laurissilva). Moreover, there is a children’s playground to entertain the younger one’s while parents savour a ‘garoto’ in the nearby café which attracts many locals and tourists alike.

Sugarcane and its associated industrial technology, created one of the major revolutions on the island and fuelled Portuguese industry. The expansion of sugar plantations in Madeira began in 1455, thanks to advisers from Sicily and Genoese merchants who financed capital.

By 1480, Belgium alone had about seventy ships engaged in the Madeira sugar trade, with the refining and distribution concentrated in Antwerp. By the 1490s Madeira had overtaken Cyprus as a producer of sugar. As sugarcane production grew so too did the importation of African slaves, who were used to cultivate sugarcane. It is estimated that the proportion of imported slaves reached 10% of the total population of Madeira by the 16th century.

After the 17th century, Madeira’s most important commodity product became its wine, seeing that the “white gold” was shifted to Brazil, São Tomé and Príncipe.

O Jardim de Santa Luzia ostenta vestígios da influência da indústria sacarina da Madeira

Epoca, do Ouro Branco

Construído sobre os terrenos do antigo engenho de açúcar do Hinton ou Torreão, o Jardim de Santa Luzia ocupa uma área de 13 600 m2. Neste jardim, que apresenta uma arquitectura paisagística contemporânea, foi preservada a chaminé da antiga fábrica e alguma maquinaria que relembra a influência da indústria sacarina da Madeira.

O jardim organiza-se em áreas de vegetação distintas, a que correspondem 5 temas: Laurissilva, Socalcos (em referência à agricultura da Madeira), Água (onde as levadas não poderiam faltar), Trópicos e Anfiteatro.

Destacam-se diversas espécies exóticas com exemplares arbóreos como é o caso da tipuana Tipuana tipu, a árvore-

No século XV, a Madeira inicia o cultivo da cana-de-açúcar, importada da Sicília pelo Infante D. Henrique. Com a rápida expansão da indústria da cana sacarina, o Funchal torna-se um centro comercial de excelência, frequentado por comerciantes de várias nacionalidades, o que muda a sua dimensão financeira insular.

Em 1472, o açúcar da Madeira começa a ser directamente exportado para a Flandres, passando esta a ser o seu principal centro redistribuidor.

Reconhece-se assim à Madeira uma particular importância no eixo destas relações entre a Flandres e Portugal.

Com a produção da cana-deaçúcar, a Madeira atraiu e fixou aventureiros e comerciantes das mais recônditas origens, tendo esta exploração sido considerada, na altura, como o principal motor da economia madeirense. Muitos foram os estrangeiros que se deslocaram à Região para o negócio do açúcar, sobretudo italianos,

bascos, catalães e flamengos.

A comercialização do açúcar na Madeira teve o seu ponto alto na década de 20 do século XVI e coincide com a datação da maioria das obras de arte flamengas existentes na ilha, demonstrando o ambiente de prosperidade comercial que era notório. Foram importadas obras de gigantescas proporções, sobretudo pinturas, aparatosos trípticos ou retábulos mistos, assim como imagens de vulto de Bruges, Antuérpia e Malines. Também foram importados objectos de prata e cobre e pedras tumulares com incrustações de metal, provenientes da Flandres e do Hainaut, como as que podem ser vistas actualmente na Sé Catedral do Funchal e em Museus como o de Arte Sacra.

Até à primeira metade do século XVI, a Madeira constituía um dos principais mercados do açúcar do Atlântico. Todavia, várias razões levaram ao declínio deste ciclo que se deslocou para outros mercados.

Cardina Museum of Porto Santo This is an important and curious attraction that visitors have been coming to see since it was first built.

The Cardina Museum, constructed by José Cardina, is a tribute to the curious artefacts which have been manufactured on Porto Santo ever since its development as a

municipal island.

Not only did Cardina collect items such as furniture, baskets, farm tools and metalwork, but he also began to make small scale replicas of them, thus preserving an antique way of life that has nearly vanished.

Fascinado pelos artefactos do passado do Porto Santo, o Sr. Cardina não só os coleccionou, como também fez bonitos modelos de ferramentas de artesãos à escala.

A recolha e recuperação de peças, em tamanho original, iniciou-se no ano de 1997.

Em dezembro de 1999, foi construído a 1ª peça de utensílios de lavoura em miniatura à escala 1/5 e os restantes durante os anos 2000 e 2001.

No ano de 2002, foram recriados em miniatura todos os fontanários do Porto Santo à escala 1/10, preservando a completa figura dos fontanários de água natural existentes na ilha.

Em outubro de 2002, dá-se inicio à construção do Museu, edifício octogonal, tendo como referência o típico moinho de vento.

Finalmente no ano de 2006 precisamente no dia 25 de Agosto, é inaugurado o museu, dando assim continuidade à sua abertura.

Projeto de autoria de José Cardina que preservou um pouco da historia do Porto Santo, antes que se tivesse perdido para sempre.
