Tourism Cycle In the 19th century, the visitors of the island were composed mainly by travelers with health issues and scientists. There were also those who belonged to the wealthy European aristocracy, such as princes, princesses and monarchs who thought of Madeira essentially as a therapeutic port.

Some of the unique characteristics of this island included the walks, horseback riding and travelling by means of a hammock.

It was in 1850 that the first Tourist Guide appeared, helping visitors focus on the island’s historical and geological aspects, as well as the island's flora, fauna and customs.

The English and the Germans were the first to lay the foundations for the construction of the Madeiran hotel chain.

Espetáculo de Homenagem a John dos Passos

Esta Regata é uma homenagem aos Grandes Países descobridores e aos territórios descobertos, partindo de Viana do Castelo, e tendo como destino final Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, passando pelo Funchal.

No século XIX, os visitantes da ilha distinguiam-se entre doentes, viajantes, turistas e cientistas. A maioria dos visitantes pertencia à aristocracia endinheirada europeia, nomeadamente príncipes, princesas e monarcas que encontrava na Ilha da Madeira, um porto terapêutico essencialmente.

No entanto, algumas das características únicas desta ilha chamaram a atenção de quem nos visitava, nomeadamente os passeios a pé, a cavalo e de rede, o que possibilitou a exploração para além dos limites da Cidade, passando o interior a ser procurado pelos visitantes. Foi então necessário criar um conjunto de infraestruturas que dessem apoio a quem se deslocava ao interior, isto na década de quarenta do século XIX. Mas, foi só a partir de 1887, que se efetivou uma rede adequada de estalagens fora do Funchal. Fato este que não colidiu com as estruturas já existentes a sul, nomeadamente as casas e quintas.

Foi precisamente nesta época que surgiu o primeiro Guia Turístico, datado de 1850, de modo a dar apoio aos visitantes e turistas. Este guia destacava a ilha do ponto de vista histórico e geológico, destacando igualmente a flora, a fauna e os costumes.

Os ingleses e os alemães foram os primeiros a lançar as bases para a construção da rede hoteleira madeirense.

This exhibition aims to show the artisans and the processes of confection of the artifacts in “palmito” (palm leaves), especially the Porto Santo hats, made by the artisans Maria Otília Melim and Salomé Melim.

“The engineers of sugar Cane” Until 15 September | Madeira Thematic Park - Santana There are three mills that still work: Sociedade de Engenhos da Calheta, Lda., Companhia das Engenhos do Norte SORUM (Porto da Cruz) and the Ribeiro Sêco Honey Factory.

More recently, the “Engenho Novo” was born in Calheta.

In 1853, José Maria Barreto and Jorge de Oliveira converted a ruined solar, located in the village of Ribeira Brava, in an industrial unit. It was then mounted a mill sugar mill, animal traction and a still distillation of brandy. In 1862, the company started to use hydraulic power, installing a wooden driving wheel that was served by a levada, and a sugar mill with three horizontal iron cylinders.

This festival includes several cultural activities with special reference to the pyro musical display shows that take place over the four Saturdays of this month.

Semana Regional das Artes Trans Madeira June 4h - 8th | Madeira trans-madeira.com Trans Madeira is na Enduro mountain bike adventure part of the international MBTCircuit.

For five days bikers will cover more than 200 kilometres of race, a competition integrating over 120 participants who will take part in 25 special stages throughout the four corners of Madeira Island.

This race allows participants to experience different types of terrain while enjoying mountain biking along unique tracks.

O Trans Madeira é uma prova de enduro caracterizada por ser uma travessia da ilha da Madeira em bicicleta, experimentado diferentes tipos de terreno, cumprindo etapas especiais ao longo de mais de 200 quilómetros de percurso, com início em Machico e término na Calheta.

June, 4th-11th | Funchal www.visitmadeira.pt The Regional Arts Week was created as cultural event comprised of with various artistic presentations: Garden Party; Artistic Methods (drama/theatre, dance, music and visual arts); ESCOLartes, Regional Exhibition and Competition in Plastic Arts – taking place in various places in the Funchal city centre and in the Madeira Tecnopolo.

A Semana Regional das Artes é uma iniciativa cultural com apresentações artísticas em vários momentos e locais: Festa no Jardim; Modalidades Artísticas (expressão dramática/ teatro, dança, música e artes plásticas); ESCOLartes, Exposição e Concurso Regionais de Expressão Plástica – a decorrer em vários espaços da baixa do Funchal e Madeira Tecnopolo.

The Regional Bread Fair is an event organised by the Funchal Lions Club for over 20 years and will take place at Avenida Arriaga central walkways, with the purpose of raising funds for the club’s charity works.

This event includes various performances by folk groups, a set of shows that will take place during the mornings and afternoons.

During the month of June are held the festivities in honour of the popular saints.

Theses celebrations beginning with festivities in tribute of Saint Anthony. On June 23rd, several municipal parishes of Funchal area, like São Pedro and São João, also organize popular marches along Rua das Pretas, Rua da Carreira and Rua de São João streets, a very lively celebration typical of the popular saint’s festive evenings.

A Feira Regional do Pão é um evento organizado pelo Lions Clube do Funchal há mais de 20 anos e que terá lugar na Placa Central da Avenida Arriaga, com o objetivo angariar fundos para obras sociais do clube.

Esta iniciativa, sublinha o LCF, «é de primordial importância para a angariação de fundos destinados a bolsas de estudo, bem como à obtenção de bens de vária natureza para famílias carenciadas».

O mês de junho acolhe as festas em honra dos santos populares, iniciando-se com as festividades em homenagem a Santo António.

Outras freguesias do município do Funchal, nomeadamente São Pedro e São João, organizam igualmente marchas populares na véspera de São João (23), percorrendo a Rua das Pretas, Rua da Carreira e Rua de São João, constituindo motivo para muita confraternização e alegria típicas das noites dos santos populares.

Feira das Sopas do Campo

This festival intends to promote the islands regional cuisine, its aromas, flavors and in particular its typical broths such as the “Caldo da Romaria”, the “Sopa de Cebola” (Onion Soup) in addition to the “ Sopa de Trigo” (Barley Soup), the “Sopa de Agrião” (Watercress Soup), the “Sopa de Milho” (Corn Soup) and the famous “Açorda da Madeira”.

Tuna Festival

June, 3rd-9th | Porto Santo www.rotadoatum.pt This event aims to present the countless ways to cook tuna.

This festival’s programme also includes a range of initiatives, such as tasting workshops and gatherings, music and dance, fishing arts and craftsmanship, photography exhibitions, urban art and humour shows.

Este certame, pretende dar a conhecer as inúmeras formas de confecionar o atum, nos mais variados países convidados.

O programa deste festival, integra ainda um leque de iniciativas, entre workshops de degustação e tertúlias, música e dança, artes de pesca e artesanato, exposições de fotografia, arte urbana e espetáculos de humor. Os Chefs José Cordeiro, Carmine Basile, António Vieira, Manuel Santos, José António Goye e Shinya Koike são a inspiração culinária do evento.

A Casa do Povo da Boaventura organiza anualmente a Feira das Sopas do Campo.

Com esta iniciativa, que engloba um extenso programa de animação, pretende-se promover os aromas e sabores típicos da gastronomia regional, nomeadamente o Caldo da Romaria e a Sopa de Cebola, para além das já habituais sopas de trigo, agrião, milho malhado e da açorda madeirense.

Festival Raízes do Atlântico June 13th - 15th | Funchal raizesdoatlantico.madeira.gov.pt Promoted by the Regional Culture Bureau (DRC) this event, is one of the oldest traditional music festivals of the World Music genre both in Portugal. This year’s edition presents some novelties, new brand, image, programme, concept and location (Praça do Povo) a festival which combines different genres, sounds, as well as new musical trends of artistic quality and aims to reach a more demanding and diversified audience, as well as, to attain a greater international projection for this festival.

O Festival Raízes do Atlântico é um dos mais antigos festivais europeus de World Music e o mais antigo de Portugal, ainda em atividade.

A edição deste ano terá novamente a duração de três dias, mantendo como objetivos uma maior internacionalização e o reforço da oferta cultural da Região. Outra das novidades desta edição prende-se com o local de realização deste evento, cujos espetáculos terão lugar na Praça do Povo, integrados nos 600 anos.

Festa da Cereja June 14th-16th | Jardim da Serra facebook.com/cpjardimserra The village of Jardim da Serra, located in the upper areas of Câmara de Lobos, hosts the Cherry Festival, a popular event that promotes the local tradition of this parish. This festivity offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities that culminate with an ethnographic parade in a tribute to the harvesting of this delicious fruit.

A freguesia do Jardim da Serra, situada na parte alta do concelho de Câmara de Lobos, acolhe a Festa da Cereja. Este evento integra um leque variado de atividades lúdico-desportivas que culminam com um cortejo etnográfico alusivo à apanha deste delicioso fruto, dando assim a conhecer os costumes e tradições da localidade.

A Festa da Cereja 2019 apresenta artistas do panorama Regional e Nacional como Mónica Sintra, João Quintino, Canário e Miro Freitas e os nossos tradicionais despiques e grupos folclóricos.

Festas de São João June, 20th-24th | Porto Santo www.cm-portosanto.pt The Feast of St. John is one of the main and most famous popular attractions of Porto Santo Island, standing out for its popular saint’s march parading through the main streets of the city centre to the sound of popular music, crackling bonfires and sweet basil scent in the air. At the same time, numerous sport and cultural activities take place, gastronomic displays to musical entertainment.

As Festas de São João, constituem um dos maiores cartazes turísticos da ilha do Porto Santo, cujo ponto alto culmina com as Marchas Populares, nas quais vários grupos de figurantes vestidos a preceito desfilam pelas principais artérias da cidade, envolvida pelo som de músicas populares e pelo cheiro dos manjericos e das fogueiras.

Paralelamente realizam-se diversas atividades desportivas , culturais e musicais.

The municipality of Ribeira Brava hosts the popular saints’ marches in honour of Saint Peter. This event is characterised by an atmosphere typical of the religious festivities where food and beverage stalls can be found, that culminate at midnight with a fireworks display, filling up the skies with light and colour.

Performances include the Portuguese singers Dama and International Dj Florian Picasso.

O município da Ribeira Brava, concelho do oeste da ilha da Madeira, organiza as tradicionais marchas populares em tributo a São Pedro. A festa carateriza-se por um cenário típico de um arraial madeirense, com barracas de comes e bebes, culminando à meia-noite com um espetáculo de fogo-de-artifício que ilumina os céus desta localidade situada à beira mar.

Os artistas Putzgrilla e DAMA são alguns dos nomes que vão marcar presença no evento.

The Madeira Atlantic Festival, an event that sets the beginning of the summer season in Madeira, is one of the most recent tourist entertainment events.

This event consists of a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, with emphasis on the pyromusical shows, the Atlantic Roots Festival and the Regional Arts Week.

Regional Bread Fair The Regional Bread Fair is an event organised by the Funchal Lions Club for over 20 years ,with the purpose of raising funds for the club’s charity works. Each installment of this event includes entertainment by folk groups in the mornings and afternoons of each festival day, and a Serenade after the fireworks.

This year´s edition is held at Avenida Arriga central walkways between June,8th to10th.

Atlantic Roots Festival This three-day festival (June 14th to 16th) aims to reach a more demanding and diversified audience, as well as, to attain a greater international projection for this festival contributing to heighten the Regions cultural offer,an event which will be integrated in the celebrations of the 600th anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo.

This year’s edition presents some novelties, new brand, image, programme, concept and location (Praça do Povo) a festival which combines different genres, sounds, as well as new musical trends of artistic quality.

The first night of the festival will be dedicated to national music, and the second to new sounds and

These wonderful and exciting performances, lasting about 20 minutes each, combine fireworks and music in a unique experience for tourists and residents, to be held on June, 8th,15th, 22nd and 29th.

In these shows, companies will compete for a trophy awarded by public vote, through the Internet and boxes located in strategic places in Funchal city (City Pier – day of the show, La Vie, Marina Shopping, Av. Arriaga Tourism Office).

Regional Arts Week This is an event organized by the Regional Art Education Association - AREArtística, intended to showcase the learning and artistic skills of Madeiran students, acquired during school, through various activities that will be held in the city centre, specifically the "Feast at the Gardens", the Regional Artistic Meetings, the Regional Exhibition of Artistic Expression, and ESCOLartes. The programme includes several artistic performances in the areas of Song, Drama/Theatre, Instrumental, Traditional Madeiran Chordophones and Dance, in addition to the Regional Exhibition of Artistic Expression, which includes a Painting contest. This cultural event, held from June11th to17th, presents the artistic work and experiments of about 4000 stu-

dents from the local primary and secondary schools, and the participation of several groups in the field of Special Education, consolidating bonds between local schools and the community, from a social openness perspective.

Popular Saints Festivities The Popular Saints Festivities are celebrations that are held in several countries, historically related to the summer solstice pagan festival, which was celebrated on June 24th. The Autonomous Region of Madeira is no exception, and a bit throughout the Region, the month of June is synonymous with celebrations in praise of the three Popular Saints: Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter. The Saint John altars, which constitute a festivity based in a neighbourhood tradition, in addition to the traditional food of the Popular Saints, holds a public contest of the Altars to the patron Saint. It takes place every year during the week that includes Saint John’s Day, usually the last week of June.

It is held in Rua da Figueira Preta, Travessa dos Reis, Rua da Conceição and Praça do Carmo.

Machico will host the 14th edition of the 16th-century Market, an event that evokes the historical period of the discovery of the island, which has gained a prominent cultural status.

Organized by the Municipal Council of Machico and in partnership with the Elementary and Secondary Schools of Machico, this initiative takes place in downtown Machico at Largo da Praça, in Alameda Dr. José António de Almada, and offers a number of cultural and musical activities, held between the 7th and 9th of June.

Machico’s Medieval Market is an entertaining festival celebrating the early days on the archipelago.

The streets are decorated with colourful flags and tents while locals are dressed in full medieval costumes – from knights and ladies to merchants and minstrels. Entertainment includes dramatic historical re-enactments, open-air theatre, music, fire eaters and acrobats. Market stalls sell a wide selection of handicrafts and offer demonstrations of pottery, weaving and woodwork.

In the past, as most people lived in the country, grew their own food, and made their own clothes, they needed places close enough to herd the animals and carry their wares to the market and then return home in the same day. Cross roads and river bridges were popular locations, especially if a church was nearby. Crafts people found it advantageous to build their workshops close to the market places. This helped villages and towns to form and grow.

Sunday grew to be a popular day for the markets.

Folk could attend church and then visit the market to sell (or trade) and socialize. Markets were not only run by local people but also by churches, monasteries, noble lords, barons, and in some countries by the rulers. Sometimes shelters were built with crosses ("market crosses") on them for market traders. Those unable to afford a stall sold their items from baskets, or spread cloths on the ground to display their wares.

As Markets grew bigger, they attracted people from greater distances. Some people became peddlars, constantly travelling from one market to the next.

Eventually they were joined by minstrels, performing animals, and other entertainers. Horses and carts became a regular sight.

In well-organised markets men were paid to check on weights, measurements, and scales, to catch those trying to cheat the customers, and to check the quality of goods. There were special market courts where dishonest traders were tried. Some of the punishments for the guilty were a day in the stocks or pillory, being pelted by passers by with rotten fruit and vegetables. A butcher or a fish monger caught and convicted for cheating customers might be pulled through the market on a sledge with a piece of stinking fish or meat around his or her neck.

This date marks the commemorations of the independence of Madeira, established in the Portuguese Constitution of 1976 and where celebrations in every municipality of the Autonomous Region of Madeira take place.

Among these celebrations one of the highlights is the Solemn Session of the Regional Legislative Assembly, the deposition of flowers at the Monument to Autonomy by the Region's officials, and the "Te Deum" Ceremony at the Cathedral (Sé) of Funchal. The 1st of July is a public holiday in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

LXIV Feira Agropecuária

A baía do Funchal, acolhe anualmente, a "Grande Regata das Canoas Tradicionais Madeirenses” (canoas de pesca), evento organizado pela Câmara Municipal do Funchal e pela Associação Regional de Canoagem da Madeira, em estreita colaboração com a Associação da Madeira de Desporto para Todos. Milho Frito Ingredientes:

• 1 pacote de farinha de milho branca • 3 lts de agua • 1 colher de sobremesa bem cheia de banha

Fried Cornmeal • 1 cup white corn meal • 4 garlic cloves, minced • 1 cube chicken broth • 4 kale leaves, minced

• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons salt • 4 cups water • Vegetable oil for frying

1) Numa panela ponha o azeite, a segurelha, o alho esmagado, a banha e um pouco de sal.

Deixe cozer um pouco.

2) Junte os 3 litros de água fria a esta base e quando a água ficar morna, junte-lhe o kg da farinha (não deixar aquecer muito). Vá mexendo continuamente até obter uma papa grossa, e junte-lhe couve picada finamente.

Garden Art

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is home to an impressive collection of art works from various parts of the world dating back as far as the second century A.D. Characteristically Portuguese stone arches, doorways and windows from the 19th century have been positioned throughout the Garden, forming a contrast with the vegetation and adorning the visitor walkways.

In April 1994 José Berardo acquired two national heritage Manueline pieces, a window and a niche, of inestimable value. One of these pieces had gone unnoticed for four decades in a garden in the Azores (Celorico da Beira) until it was advertised for sale in the local media. The Manueline style as the name itself suggests, dates from the reign of D. Manuel between 1495 and 1521.

Among other works are statues crafted in marble from the 18th century, several stone coats of arms dating from the 16th century, bronze statues from the 20th century by artists such as James Butler and a bust of Emperor Adrian in roman marble from the second century A.D. The visitor may also view four angels sculptured in granite, which represented four of the five senses: smell, sight, hearing and taste.

The environmental and scenic atmosphere created by José Berardo in this mild Madeira climate, has provided visitors with a natural environment for the architecture of gardens and a romantic visit where a variety of styles combined in simplicity and beauty may be appreciated.

Here you can find fantastic trails from mountain to sea level. It’s famous mild weather makes biking in Madeira enjoyable all year round. There are many mountain biking agencies that offer bike holidays at your taste from a full week program, a few days of biking or just one day discovering Madeira by bike.

For beginners there are tours that are ideal for a relaxed bike ride through amazing nature, and for more experienced riders there are tours for all tastes: XC, all mountain and Enduro with shuttle assistance. Some will be more technical, some will have more uphill meters, some will require crossing rocky trails, rain forest, root trails and eucalyptus forest, but all these tours will focus on exploring Madeira. In case you want to explore madeira without a guide, there also bikes available for rent. Challenge yourself going all the way up to Pico do Arieiro or just to go for a short Sunday ride.

This race allows participants to experience different types of terrain while enjoying mountain biking along unique tracks.

13 Vinhos da Madeira premiados no International Wine Challenge 2019 Pelo 36.º ano consecutivo o International Wine Challenge (IWC2019) anunciou os vinhos vencedores dos prémios de melhores do mundo, entre os quais foram medalhados 13 vinhos da Madeira, 12 dos quais licorosos e um de mesa.

Num total de 8.428 vinhos premiados de todas as regiões do mundo onde são produzidos vinhos de 50 países, tendo Portugal arrecadado 681 distinções entre as suas 16 regiões vinícolas, e a Madeira ficado com as referidas 13 garrafas com medalhas de ouro (6), prata (6) e bronze (1), além do ‘bónus’ de um destes receber o ‘Madeira Trophy’ para o melhor da Região.

For the 36th consecutive year, the International Wine Challenge (IWC2019) announced the winners of the world's best awards, among which 13 Madeira wines were awarded, 12 of which were liqueurs and a table wine.

Of the 8,428 winners from various wine producing countries around the world, Portugal was awarded 681 medals with Madeira picking up 13 of those namely 6 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze, plus a 'bonus', the 'Madeira Trophy' for the best of the Region.

Robin Redbreast

(Erithacus rubecula) Madeirans call it Papinho, others simply refer to it as Robin, or Robin Redbreast in the British Isles. Scientists refer to it as Erithacus rubecula. What is it? It is a small insectivorouspasserine bird, specifically a chat, considered to be an Old World flycatcher.

Taxonomy The robin belongs to a group of mainly insectivorous birds that have been variously assigned to the thrushes or "flycatchers", depending on how these groups were perceived taxonomically. Eventually, the flycatcherthrush assemblage was re-analysed and the genus Erithacusassigned to a group of thrushlike true flycatchers, the tribe Saxicolini, that also includes the common nightingale and the Old World chats.

Description A dark brown, medium-large butterfly with orange spots. Compared to Speckled Wood, the Madeiran species has a convex (not concave) outer edge to the forewing, more obvious orange tones to both surfaces of the wing and only two obvious eyespots on the upper side of the hindwing.

Distribution & Habitat The robin occurs in Eurasia east to Western Siberia, south to Algeria and on the Atlantic islands as far west as the Azores and Madeira.

Irish and British robins are largely resident but a small minority, usually female, migrate to southern Europe during winter, a few as far as Spain. The robin prefers spruce woods in northern Europe, contrasting with its preference for parks and gardens.

Behaviour & Ecology The robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night. It is relatively unafraid of people and drawn to human activities involving the digging of soil, in order to look out for earthworms and other food freshly turned up. Indeed, the robin is considered to be a gardener's friend and for various folklore reasons the robin would never be harmed. Robins also approach large wild animals, such as wild boar and other animals which disturb the ground, to look for any food that might be brought to the surface. O canto, que emite durante grande parte do ano, é bastante melodioso, permitindo a sua deteção quando se encontra no topo de árvores. Because of high mortality in the first year of life, a robin has an average life expectancy of 1.1 years; however, once past its first year it can expect to live longer and one robin has been recorded as reaching 19 years of age. A spell of very low temperatures in winter may also result in significant mortality. This species is parasitised by the moorhen flea, Dasypsyllus gallinulae.

Breeding Robins may choose a wide variety of sites for building a nest. In fact, anything which can offer some shelter, like a depression or hole may be considered. As well as the usual crevic-

es, or sheltered banks, other objects include pieces of machinery, barbecues, bicycle handlebars, bristles on upturned brooms, discarded kettles, watering cans, flower pots and even hats. The nest is composed of moss, leaves and grass, with fine grass, hair and feathers for lining. Two or three clutches of five or six eggs are laid throughout the breeding season, which commences in March. The eggs are a cream, buff or white speckled or blotched with reddish-brown colour, often more heavily so at the larger end. When juvenile birds fly from the nests they are mottled brown in colour all over.

After two to three months out of the nest, the juvenile bird grows some orange feathers under its chin and over a similar period this patch gradually extends to complete the adult appearance.

Sugarbush The Flower of Change and Hope (Ocotea foetens) Commonly referred to as Sugarbush, the South African flowering plant (botanical name: Protea) represents change and hope.

The genus Protea was named in 1735 by Carl Linnaeus after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form at will, because they have such a wide variety of forms.

The family Proteaceae to which proteas belong is an ancient one among angiosperms. Evidence from pollen fossils suggest Proteaceae ancestors grew in Gondwana, in the Upper Cretaceous, 75-80 million years ago. The Proteaceae are divided into two subfamilies: the Proteoideae, best represented in southern Africa, and the Grevilleoideae, concentrated in Australia and South America and the other smaller segments of Gondwana that are now part of eastern Asia. Africa shares only one genus with Madagascar, whereas South America and Australia share many common genera — this indicates they separated from Africa before they separated from each other.

Proteas are currently cultivated in over 20 countries.

Cultivation is restricted to Mediterranean and sub tropical climates such as that of Madeira Island. Some Protea flower species, like the King Protea flower, are self-pollinating flowers. Other Protea species, however, like the Protea Cordata, Protea decurrens and the Protea scabra are self-incompatible and thus rely on cross-pollination for successive seed set. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in Protea cultivation are birds, insects and wind. There are some Protea species which exhibit both self-pollination as well as cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is however preferred as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating Proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another.

Proteas usually flower during spring time.

There are four main methods of selecting Protea flowers for further cultivation: Mass selection, Single plant clonal selection, Chance interspecific hybrid selection, Controlledpollination interspecific hybrid selection. The four main methods for cultivating Protea plants are sexual reproduction (cultivation with seed). When Proteas are cultivated using seeds, the first step in the cultivation process is to disinfect the seeds by soaking in water maintained at 50 °C for 30 minutes. The germination of the seeds will occur over a period of 14 to 28 days. The germinating seeds should be planted in a medium in pots before the developing roots are 10mm long. Another method for cultivation is vegetative propagation (cultivation with cuttings), which is used to obtain a large protea population of the same genotype.

This cultivation method allows for the cultivation of hybrid protea plants without the loss of their unique characteristics. The other two cultivation methods include grafting and budding and micropropagation, referring to cultivation with tissue culture.

Prótea A prótea é uma das flores mais emblemáticas e cativantes da região. O nome deriva do deus da mitologia grega Proteus.

As próteas, nome dado a um grande número de espécies, são provenientes da África do Sul e da Austrália e foram introduzidas na Ilha da Madeira, pela inglesa Mildred Blandy, na década de 70.

Os géneros mais usados como flor são as Prótea sp., das quais se destacam as espécies Protea cynaroides, Protea magnifica, 'Susara', 'Pink Ice', Protea neriifolia e Protea grandiceps., os Leucospermum sp. (como, por exemplo, 'Succession II', 'Tango', 'Sunrise', 'Vlam', 'High Gold' e 'Scarlet Ribbon'), e as Telopea sp.

As próteas preferem locais mais frescos, onde haja circulação do ar, com temperaturas a variar entre os 7 e os 27 ºC e uma humidade relativa baixa (inferior a 50%) e com uma boa exposição solar. Na Madeira, esta cultura deve ser instalada na costa sul, em zonas acima dos 350-400m de altitude, e, na costa norte, acima dos 150-200m.

The following six steps are used by breeders to perform hand pollination: 1-Cover the inflorescence, which contain only closed flowers, with a plastic bag 2-Once the first few flowers have opened, the majority has to be cut back to 10-20 flowers around the receptacle 3-After thre e days the pollen may be applied using a tooth pick. The flower should then again be covered with a plastic bag and marked with a tag containing information regarding the seed, the parent as well as the date of pollination. This step should be repeated until all the flowers are opened and pollinated.

4-The seed head should be harvested at nine to twelve months and dried at temperatures more or less at 40 °C to remove the seeds from the receptacle 5-The seeds can be germinated in autumn using hot water 6-The seeds should then be placed in a sterilized potting medium for germination.

Estas plantas preferem solos de textura ligeira a média, com boa drenagem e uma profundidade superior a 60cm. A plantação das próteas é geralmente efetuada nos meses de Outono e Inverno.

O compasso de plantação utilizado depende da espécie a cultivar: as de flor, geralmente é de 1m entre plantas, enquanto que nas de folhagem é de 0,5m. A plantação deve ser cuidadosa, sem danificar as raízes pois estas plantas são muito sensíveis a nível radicular.

De uma forma geral, as próteas começam a produzir flor a partir do segundo ano após a plantação. A época de floração varia de acordo com as espécies, podendo ocorrer durante todo o ano, como no caso da Prótea cynaroides, ou em determinados meses do ano (entre Setembro e Maio).

Sir Charles Lyell, 1st Baronet, (14 November 1797 – 22 February 1875) was a British lawyer and the foremost geologist of his day. He is best known as the author of Principles of Geology, which popularised uniformitarianism – the idea that the earth was shaped by slow-moving forces still in operation today. Lyell was a close and influential friend of Charles Darwin and visited Madeira in 1853.

Sir Charles Lyell was born in Scotland about 15 miles north of Dundee in Kinnordy, near Kirriemuir in Forfarshire (now in Angus). He was the eldest of ten children. Lyell’s father, also named Charles, was a lawyer and botanist of minor repute: it was he who first exposed his son to the study of nature. The house or place of his birth is located in the north-west of the Central Lowlands in the valley of the Highland Boundary Fault, one of the great features of Scottish geology. Round the house, in the rift valley, is farmland, but within a short distance to the north-west, on the other side of the fault, are the Grampian Mountains in the Highlands. Charles would have seen this striking view from his house as a child.

He was also fortunate that his family’s second home was in a completely different geological and ecological area: he spent much of his childhood at Bartley Lodge in the New Forest, England. Both these places undoubtedly kindled his interest in the natural world.

Lyell entered Exeter College, Oxford in 1816. After graduation he took up law as a profession. In 1823 he was elected joint secretary of the Geological Society. As his eyesight began to deteriorate, he turned to geology as a full-time profession. By 1827, he had abandoned law and embarked on a geological career that would result in fame and the general acceptance of uniformitarianism, a working out of the idea proposed by James Hutton a few decades earlier.

Lyell’s first book, Principles of Geology, was also his most famous, most influential, and most important. First published in three volumes in 1830–33, it established Lyell’s credentials as an important geological theorist and propounded the doctrine of uniformitarianism. It was a work of synthesis, backed by his own personal observations on his travels.

The central argument in Principles was that the

present is the key to the past. Geological remains from the distant past can, and should, be explained by reference to geological processes now in operation and thus directly observable.

Lyell’s interpretation of geologic change as the steady accumulation of minute changes over enormously long spans of time was a powerful influence on the young Charles Darwin.

Although Darwin discussed evolutionary ideas with Lyell, Lyell continued to reject evolution in each of the first nine editions of the Principles. He encouraged Darwin to publish, and following the 1859 publication of On the Origin of Species, Lyell finally offered a tepid endorsement of evolution in the tenth edition of Principles.

In 1832, Lyell married Mary Horner of Bonn and the new couple spent their honeymoon in Switzerland and Italy on a geological tour of the area.

During the 1840s, Lyell travelled to the United States and Canada, and wrote two popular traveland-geology books: Travels in North America (1845) and A Second Visit to the United States (1849). After the Great Chicago Fire, Lyell was one of the first to donate books to help found the Chicago Public Library.

In 1866, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Lyell’s wife died in 1873, and two years later Lyell himself died as he was revising the twelfth edition of Principles. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. Lyell was knighted (Kt), and later made a baronet (Bt), which is an hereditary honour. He was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in 1858 and the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society in 1866. The crater Lyell on the Moon and a crater on Mars were named in his honour. In addition, Mount Lyell in western Tasmania, Australia, located in a profitable mining area, bears Lyell’s name.

Biografia Charles Lyell nasceu em Kinnordy, Forfarshire, na Escócia, em 14 de novembro de 1797. De família rica, logo demonstrou interesse pela zoologia, objeto de suas primeiras pesquisas. Seu pai, também chamado Charles, foi um botânico de reputação ínfima e o primeiro a expor o jovem Charles ao estudo da natureza. Aos 19 anos ingressou na Universidade de Oxford e depois estudou direito em Londres. Em 1823, conheceu em Paris os naturalistas Alexander von Humboldt e Georges Cuvier e fez suas primeiras expedições geológicas. Em 1825, começou a exercer a advocacia, mas o desejo de demonstrar que as mudanças geológicas se deviam a causas naturais fez com que abandonasse a profissão para viajar. Foi em França e Itália que observou fenômenos que confirmavam a sua tese. Em 1830, publicou o primeiro volume de Principles of Geology (Princípios de geologia).

Nele mostra os inconvenientes das doutrinas criacionistas e ataca a teoria do catastrofismo de Cuvier, ao mesmo tempo que propõe o "Princípio das causas atuais ou atualismo". Segundo este princípio os fenómenos ao longo dos tempos geológicos são os mesmos que os atuais, diferindo apenas na intensidade e duração.

Foi, juntamente com John Playfair, o maior advogado da ideia então controversa do uniformitarianismo, de que a terra foi moldada praticamente inteiramente por forças lentas agindo por um longo período de tempo, contrastando com o catastrofismo, uma ideia que postulava que a maior parte das modificações eram abruptas, pela idade da Terra inferida através da cronologia da bíblia. Em várias edições revisadas (vinte, ao todo, até 1872), "Principles of Geology" foi o trabalho geológico mais influente no meio do século XIX, e foi essencial para dar a Geologia um cunho moderno. Pelos seus esforços, ele foi condecorado em 1848, recebendo o título de Barão.

The Pico Ruivo trail This trail of 2,8km an duration of 1.30 hours allows you to get to the highest summit of the island, Pico Ruivo. The trail climbs along the ridge that separates the cliffs of Faial and those of Santana.

Beginning at Achada do Teixeira this trail climbs up to the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1862 m). Next to the Pico Ruivo government house you can gain access to 3 other trails that take the hiker to different parts of the island: PR 1 Pico do Areeiro footpath (5,1/6,4 Km), which takes you to Pico do Areeiro, the island’s 2nd highest peak (1816m); PR 1.3 Encumeada Footpath (8.6 Km), goes along the central mountain range to the West; and PR 1.1- Ilha Footpath (8.2 Km), which descends to the parish of Ilha. Along the climb you will meet several shelters as the change in climate is sudden and sharp and the area often becomes covered in a sea of clouds or rests above it.

The trail climbs along the ridge that separates the cliffs of Faial and those of Santana, and so allows for an excellent view to the left of the Ribeira Seca valley, topped by Pico das Torres, and Pico do Areeiro in the background. On the right-hand side you can see the “gables” of the Santana mountain range, from where in the distance you can see the Queimadas Forest Park and further ahead Achada do Marques (a small hamlet known for its straw lofts and traditional fields), which appears in the centre of the Ribeira dos Arcos valley.

Towards the interior we can see the Ribeira Grande valley that begins at the “mouths” of Caldeirão Verde and Caldeirão do Inferno.

This area is part of the European network of important areas - Natura 2000 - and is known as the central mountain massif. It covers from the highest peaks to 1200m above sea level. It is characterised by herbaceous and bush vegetation that is well-adapted to big temperature variations, heavy rains and strong winds, and is where you can find many types of heather (Erica scoparia ssp maderensis and Erica aborea), which many years ago were used to produce charcoal.

When visibility is good to the East you can see the rocky outcrop of Penha d’Águia, the Funduras mountain range and part of the S. Lourenço Point (far eastern part of Madeira island).

The Casa do Pico Ruivo was recently re-opened by a local association which provides bar/cafeteria service to all those who pass by to rest before continuing on their expedition.

At Achada do Teixeira you can also visit the “Standing Man” (“Homem em pé”), a basalt formation which you will find walking down the cliff, after passing the Achada do Teixeira government house.

Vereda do Pico Ruivo Este trilho sobe até ao pico mais alto da ilha da Madeira, o Pico Ruivo (1861m). Com início e fim na Achada do Teixeira tem uma extensão de 2,8 Km (+ 2,8 Km de regresso) com uma duração de 1h 30 (ida e regresso). Junto à casa de abrigo do Pico Ruivo terá acesso a outros 3 trilhos que levam a diferentes pontos da ilha: Vereda do Pico Areeiro, Vereda da Encumeada e Vereda da Ilha. Na Achada do Teixeira pode ainda visitar o “ Homem em pé”, formação rochosa basáltica que se encontra depois de passar pela frente da casa de abrigo da Achada do Teixeira.

Ao longo da subida são encontrados vários abrigos, pois aqui a variação climática é brusca, sendo frequente a área, ficar mergulhada num mar de nuvens ou acima delas.

Esta área integra a rede europeia de sítios de importância comunitária -Rede Natura 2000- com o nome de maciço montanhoso central, abrangendo os picos mais altos e as cotas de 1200 m de altitude. Caracteriza-se pela vegetação herbácea e arbustiva bem adaptadas às grandes variações de temperatura, fortes chuvadas e ventos intensos onde predominam as urzes (Urze das vassouras -Erica platycodon subsp. maderincola e Urze Molar -Erica arborea), antigamente muito exploradas para a produção de carvão vegetal.

O trilho sobe ao longo do “lombo”, que separa as encostas do Faial das de Santana, pelo que proporciona do lado esquerdo magníficas paisagens sobre o vale da Ribeira Seca, encimada pelo Pico das Torres, e ao fundo o Pico do Areeiro.

Do lado direito temos as “empenas” da serra de Santana, onde se pode observar ao longe o Parque Florestal das Queimadas e um pouco mais à frente a Achada do Marques (pequeno aglomerado populacional caracterizado pelos seus palheiros e campos agrícolas) que surge no meio do vale da Ribeira dos Arcos. Para o interior existe o vale da Ribeira Grande que se inicia nas “bocas” do Caldeirão Verde e do Caldeirão do Inferno.

Em dias de boa visibilidade para Este pode-se avistar a formação rochosa da Penha D´Águia, a Serra das Funduras e a Ponta de S. Lourenço (extremo Este da Ilha da Madeira).

Characteristics Oriana is 260 metres (853 ft) long, with a beam of just over 32 metres (105 ft), and a draught of 7.9 metres (26 ft), which varies up to 8.2 m depending on load. There is a 69,153 GT and a maximum passenger capacity of 1,928.

Outside passenger deck space is 105,000 square feet (9,800 m2).

Aim Oriana was the first ship to be designed specifically for the British cruise market. It was also designed in the style of an ocean liner to facilitate long distance voyages and world cruises.

Despite numerous changes of ownership, Oriana has been operated by P&O Cruises throughout and it is an adult-only ship.

MV Oriana, a cruise ship and ocean liner of the P&O Cruises fleet, was built in Papenburg,Germany. It is the smallest of seven ships currently in service with P&O Cruises. It officially entered service with the company in 1995 and though it is the oldest, and longest-serving ship in the fleet, it holds the Golden Cockerel as the fastest one.

Design Oriana has a single deck of balconies reserved for suites, mini suites and staterooms to cater for the growing desire for balconies on board.

Oriana’s team of designers were engaged by P&O to bring the British look to the high-revenue generating interiors of the ship, such as Anderson's, Lord's Tavern, the Knightsbridge Shops, the Emporium, Harlequins, the Casino, the Photo Gallery, the Pacific Lounge, and related public spaces, as well as on-

board information graphics.

Service When Oriana entered service it was one of the largest cruise ships in the world, and the largest ship built in Germany since 1914. Since then tonnages have increased as economies of scale make larger ships more profitable to operate.

Oriana normally operates cruises within the Mediterranean, the Canaries, Madeira and the Baltic seas.

Refitting In 2006 the Oriana underwent a €11 million refit in Germany. Due to the success of the 'Arcadian Rhodes' restaurant on board the Arcadia, a new Oriana Rhodes restaurant was introduced, replacing The Curzon Room. Oriana Rhodes was designed by chef Gary Rhodes, and can accommodate 96 passengers. Other modifications included the extension of the popular Lord's Tavern bar, festooned with cricket memorabilia, and refurbishment of the children's play areas, which were converted to cabins.

Recorde-se que, na altura, o navio da companhia P&O Cruises foi considerado um dos maiores do mundo e o maior construído nos estaleiros da Alemanha desde 1914.

Ao longo dos anos, aquele que em 1995 tinha sido considerado um "gigante dos mares", sofreu várias remodelações, a mais recente foi em 2015, tendo sido desenhada na proa uma grande bandeira britânica e a tradicional cor amarela da chaminé substituída por azul escuro e um estilizado sol nascente dourado, o logotipo da companhia.

Em 2019 a companhia P&O Cruises, anunciou a saída da frota do paquete Oriana, que vai cumprir ao serviço da companhia 24 anos, sendo o navio mais pequeno e antigo da frota.

Ainda não foi anunciado o seu destino, possivelmente poderá ir para a Austrália, ou mesmo para a Ásia, sendo mercados de rápido crescimento de passageiros.

Henrique & Francisco Franco Museum The Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum is dedicated to the study, conservation, presentation and dissemination of the work of the brothers Henrique and Francisco Franco.

One was a painter and the other was a sculptor.

The Museum houses a valuable collection of prints, drawings and sculptures from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.

Rotating its collection through medium or long-term exhibitions, the Museum allows the visitor the opportunity to observe the paths taken by these two great artists.

The Museum offers guided tours, thematic activities, workshops for selfexpression with art as well as educational services that focus on spreading information on its collection and the two artists.

Ao nível das acessibilidades, foram concebidas nos últimos meses ações específicas, com o apoio do Turismo de Portugal, nomeadamente: criação de várias zonas de descanso, para um público com limitações motoras e não só; rampa de acesso ao museu, para utilizadores de cadeiras de rodas e adaptação da casa de banho, para este público em especial; disponibilização de áudio-guias, com áudio descrição, para o público cego e língua gestual, para o público surdo; catálogo/guia (em papel) da exposição atual, em braille. Desta forma o MHFF pretende continuar a democratizar o acesso à cultura, tornando-se num espaço cada vez inclusivo e agradável, para quem o visita.
