TO THE POINT: MICRO NEEDLING Increase your collagen production, improve texture, reduce fine lines and scarring by stimulating collagen production with the latest skin rejuvenating treatment from Caci. Micro Needling uses the latest technology Electroporation Needle System which combines needling and electroporation (an electrical current) to effectively deliver tailored serum much deeper into the dermis than needling alone.

The treatment uses micro needles at varying lengths to penetrate skin, triggering our body’s own wound healing response. When our skin is damaged, it produces collagen tissue, which is stronger, and firmer than before. Over a course of treatments collagen fibres are strengthened and the skin becomes stronger, smoother, and firmer, with improved texture.

NEW ZEALAND’S SKIN AND APPEARANCE EXPERTS

Our treatment plans are designed to target your concerns and get you the results you’ve always wanted. 0800 458 458

Vitamins and amino acids are the building blocks for collagen production; during the treatment a combination of Hyaluronic acid, multi-vitamins and amino acids are infused to boost collagen production for firmer, healthier looking skin. The treatment is performed by one of Caci’s expert Registered Nurses, and is suitable for most people. It takes around 30minutes, and with minimal downtime it’s a great option for the treatment of skin texture, lines, improving elasticity and scarring. For the best results, Caci recommend a course of treatments on their Skin Health Plan to ensure long lasting results. Book a complimentary consultation to find out more. www.caci.co.nz 5

ill I have a double shot or a single shotof coffee? Will I have a burger or a salad? Red wine or Champagne? Plastic bag or eco bag? We are constantly, by the minute, making decisions and choices, most of which are made without actually thinking,--- they simply become habit. I challenge us all to think, long and hard, about these daily decisions. What does it meanif I do this or that? What are the consequences in my life and in the world? With the constant use of phones, computers, and social media many of us have lost the thought process of making clear choices rather than being influenced by what is on our screens. Conscious choices bring change and we all need to consciously make good decisions to bring about positive change in our world. Some of my small changes have been to use a wooden toothbrush rather than a plastic one and to shop using an eco bag (most times I forget but I am consciously trying!). I have also switched to using a natural deodorant, Twenty8’s Cypress and Coconut Deodorant Paste. It’s a 100% natural product that actually works without relying on “questionable” ingredients and only a small amount is needed to stay fresh all day. What are yours? Think about something you can do in your day that can not only impact your life but also the world around us. It may be as simple as a picnic in the park without your phone! Change is never easy, and it may take a lot of effort but I urge you to just do it, and try one new thing. See pages 20 to 21 for our new healthy living section if you need inspiration. This issue we have a beautiful story on mothers and their sons, how the relationships have changed over the years and how a mother now influences her son more than she knows. We celebrate the mother-son connection on pages 10 to 13. Another story I love in this issue is Vinka Bridal which has been on Queen street for over 60 years. Vinka was the top bridal house in New Zealand in the ‘50s and ‘60s - my mother drove from New Plymouth to have her dress designed by Vinka and recently, I had the most stunning creation made by Anita, her daughter, who has taken over the business. Anita had an incredibly special photoshoot with her own daughter in Paris. Read about it on page 34.

LUXURIOUS SKINCARE RANGE Effective Skincare Products

AS WOMEN, we are constantly buying, trying, gifting and receiving the latest and greatest eye serums, moisturisers, toners, hand creams, and so much more. In my experience, most of them do work, but it’s either only for a short amount of time, or they feel greasy on your skin, or they just aren’t quite right. Monalinda is different. Not only does it work, it feels soothing, repairing, and is made of natural ingredients. Developed by the well-regarded team at Sapphire Clinic, the Monalinda Skincare range is just that. It’s made using active peptides from New Zealand Ovine Placenta, with stabilised Vitamin C. New Zealand Kawakawa extract, rose water for skin hydration, and Vitamin E in the form of New Zealand Avocado Oil to leave you with a smooth and youthful skin. “As a beauty magazine Editor, I have tried nearly every luxury world class product on offer over the last 20 years,”

explains Eye Magazine Editor Vanessa Bennett.

“I love the products especially the 20% Vit C Serum, and I have been using it on and off for about 2 years,”

says Kate Eible, Owner, Nike Britomart. “I have noticed visible differences in my skin texture and pigment. I used to have quite dry skin and now it seems really hydrated - I am constantly recommending the Vitamin C Serum to everyone!”

Design Director at Trove Interior Design Daniella Norling has always taken a minimalist approach to her skincare routine. “I’ve always used coconut oil to cleanse but as my skin didn’t need it, I never invested in any other products. I decided to try Monalinda as a pre-emptive approach to ageing and very quickly saw the results,” she explains. “I use it all over my face, and my body as well, it’s the most amazing skincare product I’ve ever used. It’s replaced much of my makeup on a daily basis which has saved me time in the morning.”

The results are what truly makes Margaret proud of the product she’s developed, with many not only raving about the products, but also recommending it to friends.

S K I N C A R E

“Monalinda truly is one of the most effective luxurious products I have used on my skin, the feel of it is enough to make you love it! Monalinda actively moisturises your skin - you can almost feel the vitamins going in! . Every skincare makes claims, but this range has given my skin noticeable results, from reducing my pigmentation, smoothing the tone to effectively hydrating.”

behind Monalinda skincare

M O N A L I N D A

Monalinda skincare is the brainchild of Margaret Chen, a doctor and qualified organic chemist who owns Sapphire Appearance Medicine Clinic in Freeman’s Bay. For her key ingredients, Margaret looked to nature, which is where many of the world’s most effective pharmaceuticals were first discovered. Three of her serums feature stabilised vitamin C, which is clinically proven to treat and prevent changes associated with photo ageing (sun exposure). Vitamin C is also an effective treatment for hyperpigmentation. Margaret’s other star ingredient is OPE (ovine placenta extract). The stem cells found in the sheep placenta have been compared to those in embryonic stem cells, which have been identified as helping with the anti-aging process. When vitamin C and OPE are used together, you’re getting a double-hit of treatment for the signs of ageing. Proof of the efficacy of Margaret’s cosmeceutical range, branded Monalinda, can be seen with a photo taken of her father’s hands. He used Monalinda 20% serum developed by Margaret on only his left hand. After three months, the difference between his left and right hands was remarkable. The skin on his left hand had noticeably fewer wrinkles and was much less marked by age pigmentation than his right hand. - In the figure to the right Extraordinary Skin Rejuvenation Result After using Monalinda 20% vitC serum left hand for 3 months

Keep your EYE on... What would we find on your bedside table? My Kindle, which I love! It has brought me back into reading books again. I used to have a number of books stacked up around the bedroom and it looked shabby so once I converted to the Kindle I was hooked on books again.

Favourite item in your wardrobe? Apparently I have a shopping problem, having filled every wardrobe in the house (6 of them and one in the garage). I also have 60 odd pairs of shoes, so finding a favourite is a little difficult, but if I had to pick it would be my Jimmy Choo wedges, I liked them so much I brought them in two colours.

What’s your personal style? That depends on where I’m at and what I’m doing, if I’m in Waiheke it’s whatever goes, shorts, flowing dresses or smart casual if going out to lunch. I think there is an inner hippie trying to escape as I often wear floaty dresses with junky jewellery. If in Auckland (where I spend more of my time) it’s a fun and individual take on corporate and I’m often seen in very bright colours and interesting prints or textures.

REBECCA PURDY

from The Generalist PR

H

aving owned a number of PR companies in the last 19 years, Rebecca knows her stuff when it comes to getting publicity for her clients. Rebecca is a born connector and like all good connectors she loves linking people together to get the best results for all parties. She has worked with a number of leading brands from beauty through to large homeware clients, including Trilogy, Schwarzkopf, Electrolux, Bosch and many more. Passionate about? Passionate about my business, I’ve been doing PR and promotional work for 19 years having set up Product Placement, bare pr and The Generalist. I’m really lucky to have been surrounded by great staff throughout the years and wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I’m lucky to have also worked on some amazing brands over the years, ranging from Trilogy and Clarins through to lifestyle brands like Electrolux and Bosch. I love a new project, this is where I’m at my best, working on big ideas, concepts, and strategies for my clients. Most of all I love seeing an idea come to life and being executed through the media or an experiential campaign.

Fondest travel memories? My OE when I was 19, sleeping in train stations, going to Germany just as the Berlin wall came down and chipping pieces off it to bring home. Riding a camel through the desert for 10 hours and catching the local bus from Cairo to Luxor (would not recommend this on any level) and narrowly escaping death by trying to get out the wrong side of the train onto the track. I did another small trip around Europe in my late 30’s and whilst it was amazing staying in beautiful hotels in Paris and a dream home in Tuscany it was a very different experience to the one I had in my youth. But it turns out you could do Europe on 1,000 pounds for 4 months, if you were prepared to really slum it! What’s in your hand bag? What’s not in my hand bag you mean? The other day I found a screwdriver, I’m lost as to what that was in there for! Amongst that were 6 lipsticks; so I’m stocked up in case I need a different colour, two pairs of glasses, a notebook in case I need to write ideas down, wallet and Scandal. Last words? Do what you do do well and if something doesn’t feel right don’t do it, always follow your instincts.

Saben a new renaissance ROANNE JACOBSON COMES FROM ‘A LONG LINE OF STYLISH AND FIERCELY INDEPENDENT WOMEN’, SO IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT SHE NOW OWNS AND DESIGNS FOR THE LEADING LEATHER HANDBAG AND ACCESSORIES LABEL IN NEW ZEALAND, SABEN.

H

er grandmother Sarah Saben, is the brand’s namesake. Hugely inspired by her grandmother’s artful creation of each day’s outfit, Jacobson’s collections now ensure that Sarah Saben’s timeless sense of style lives on through the brand. With a flagship store on Ponsonby Road in Auckland, Saben has stockists in every city in New Zealand. Known for their gorgeously textured leathers, bold colours and refined designs, Saben have become a mark of high quality and high fashion. Jacobson is passionate about the importance of a great handbag for a woman juggling a career or a family (or both), believing that the perfect handbag can make all the difference. “Often our wallets and handbags become the linchpin to keeping our lives in order”, she says wisely. Which is why Saben stand out for their focus on practicality as well as style. One of their classics, the Frankie handbag, has two compartments to keep your work and personal life separate, for example. Jacobson manages to stay ahead of the game with her ‘a la mode’, playful designs, without ever compromising on intuitive functionality, a marvel that sets Saben apart.

32

Saben Marketing Manager, Brooke Fairgray, gave us an exciting sneak peek of the 2018 Winter collection. A wonder of hues and textures, the collection is reminiscent of the late renaissance period. Inspired by the 17th century art movement, Vanitas, the collection merges fashion with art in a captivating range of textures and shades. The colour chemistry is a luxurious and sensory dream, from rich red Bordeaux to fawny natural tan, dark and moody navy to classic khaki. Dripping with opulence and saturated with colour, the collection maintains Saben’s modern functionality, with a focus on the feminine aspects of Vanitas. Jacobson describes the collection as ‘a reinvention of romanticism, using historical references to create a modern femininity’. The Winter 2018 range is available from February 21st, online and in store.

What Not To Do Before Saying ‘I Do’ TIPS FROM DIANE STEPHENSON OWNER OF MODES EVENTWEAR + BRIDAL 1. Don't hate your photos. Transcend the trends so your gown is "you" and stands the test of time. 2. Be strong in regards to Bridesmaids. You don't need to have seven and they don't have to wear matching dresses or colours. 3. Mothers can wear the same colour as each other and the same colour as the Bridesmaids. We know who the mothers are.

34

4. Have a relaxed party the next morning so you can actually enjoy your guests, especially those who have come from overseas. 5. Don't leave your guests too long without food or you might end up with some trollied guests that will leave you wondering why you invited them in the first place.

6. Spread the speeches out and remind your speakers: if you can't say something nice, don't bother. It's a wedding reception not the stag or hens do and some of your guests might be sober.

WHEN IT COMES TO PLANNING A WEDDING, THERE ARE A MILLION AND ONE THINGS INVOLVED. INVITES, VENUES, FLOWERS, AND PLACE CARDS, JUST TO NAME A FEW. ONE DECISION STANDS ABOVE ALL THE REST: THE DRESS.

V

inka Design has been bringing this dream to life for brides for over 60 years. The boutique was established by Vinka Lucas, an entrepreneur who paved the way for modern bridal design and haute couture evening wear in New Zealand starting from the early 1960s. The label’s founding principles of New Zealand made design with an emphasis on creating beautiful, timeless wedding gowns have endured through the decades and today Vinka Design stands alone in its heritage of design and romanticism. Specializing in custom made, designer wedding dresses, there is something for every bride, from delicate silk wedding dresses, through to gorgeous tulle and beaded bridal gowns. Over recent years Vinka Design has become a family business and today Vinka Design is led by Vinka’s daughter Anita, a talented designer in her own right. Anita understands the importance of enhancing your best features and providing exceptional design creativity along with an emphasis on customer service which Vinka Design is famous for. We spoke with Anita about her recent journey to Paris, and an unexpected photoshoot that was born out of the trip. You recently did a stunning photoshoot with your daughter, why did you choose Paris? The Paris shoot came about simply after being inspired by seeing a photo of Vinka. She was standing next to the magnificent Pont Alexandre bridge in Paris looking so chic and I thought wouldn’t that be awesome to try and replicate. I was already going to be in Paris with my daughter Helena so thought maybe I should pack some wedding gowns! Luckily, she was up for it. When discussing my upcoming plans with Emma from Sweet Events Photography, she asked if she could be our photographer as she was already going to be in Europe, so a plan was hatched.

Did you find inspiration in European design styles? I wasn’t inspired by the fashion but the architecture! So many incredible structures, bridges and buildings especially in Rome. Would love to make it an annual trip but choose a different city each time. What is your favorite part of your job? Favorite part of my job, that’s a tough one. I love the design process and inspiring my clients with the concept, however the best part I think is seeing it all come together when the gown is finished. How do you relax? Blissfully curled up in a comfy chair with a good book and some chocolate nearby. Why bridalwear as opposed to other fashion design? I got into bridal by example. My mother Vinka loved designing both bridal and evening, but for me I prefer bridal. A wedding gown is something very special to a woman. It’s the most significant dress she will wear and thus it matters that it is exquisite. It’s pretty special to be the creator of that gown and part of her journey. The sort of work we do is very specialized, and I get to work with some of the most stunning fabrics and laces the world has to offer. Hard to top that! What is your top tip for brides-to-be? Top tip for brides is to pick experts for the big things- venue, photographer and gown. They will ensure things go smoothly for you and guide you through and make it worry free. If you can afford a wedding planner, brilliant. Otherwise use your bridesmaids and family to help you. Delegate. On the day snatch some quiet time with your groom before you greet your guests, even for 10 minutes! At the end of the day, it is about the two of you. You will be surprised how little time alone you will have, so make time to be alone to enjoy the moment with your new husband.

Luxury Living on Yonder Star

Y

onder Star was launched in New Zealand in 1980 for an American owner, she is about 38 years old but in Florida, in 2000, she was essentially made into a new boat. This included a new stern, a new bow, new plating and all the internals were redone. It’s been used as a Gentlemen's boat, so to speak, for small charters rather than big groups. Yonder Star has been graced with Senators, famous actors, and many celebrities over her lifetime. She was brought back to New Zealand by a Texan in 2003, hence the name Yonder Star. The impressive yacht has four main living areas: the bow, the stern, and salon. From overnights to week long charters, Yonder Star has now takes groups to Waiheke, around the Auckland harbour and more, after spending the last year out of water doing a major refit.

Completely set up, Yonder Star now has all the technology, upholstery and is in perfect condition for luxury charters. The Interior pilot house is completely sheltered without losing the beautiful sea views and provides all the food and beverages one could ask for. With a master bedroom, a main bedroom, and two other side bedrooms as well as two bathrooms, everything is carefully designed to make the most of the space without looking crowded. There is a total of 5 bedroom and bathrooms onboard. Designed for families, hen’s dos, getaways or simply a day of luxury, Yonder Star is truly something special.

ith winter fast approaching it’s common to see lemon and ginger tea, multivitamins and plenty of water start to make a regular occurrence in our daily diet. However, did you know that your fur babies can also catch a cold? While the virus cannot cross between species, the symptoms are similar with sniffles, watery eyes, coughs and runny noses. If this is the case, make sure your pup is well-rested, is drinking plenty of water, and do not hesitate to contact your vet if the symptoms worsen or persist. And of course, prevention is always key so ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations, eating the right food and consider a jacket if they are going for a walk in the rain or in low temperatures.

Less Stress for Travelling Pets

Not all pets enjoy travelling. David Dowd from Highway Vets & Pets Kerikeri however, suggests reducing the stress of travel by allowing your pets to see their surroundings while safely secured in a pet carrier (or harness). David also notes the importance of regular stops for breaks and ensuring there is water and food throughout the trip, but most importantly never leaving your pet in a parked car in warmer weather, even with the windows down. Heat stress is a known killer to pets left in cars.

NEW ZEALAND’S BEST KEPT SECRET

N

ew Zealand is a destination-seekers dream. From the mountain vistas to the stunning lakes, people come from far and wide to experience all the landscape has to offer. While the picturesque South Island certainly originally put our country on the map but is now Northland that has everyone talking. Northland has a special charm and energy. According to Māori legend, the North Island of New Zealand was an enormous fish, caught by the adventurer Māui. For this reason, Northland (Maori Te Tai Tokerau) sometimes goes by the nickname of "the tail of the fish", Te Hiku o Te Ika. With Māori regarding the region as the legendary birthplace of the country, it is unsurprising that it was the European starting-point for the modern nation of New Zealand. Traders, whalers and sealers were among the first arrivals, and the gum and timber of the mighty kauri trees brought more colonisers. Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands can lay claim to being the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand and contains many historic buildings, including the Stone Store, New Zealand's oldest extant building. The nearby settlement of Waitangi is of even more significance, as the signing place of New Zealand's founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi between the Māori tribes and the British Crown, on 6 February 1840. And what a great place to settle - well known for its wonderful climate and nicknamed the winterless North, its inhabitants enjoy many more sunny days than the

rest of the country. The main population centre is the city of Whangarei and the largest town is Kerikeri, with many smaller towns and lots of beautiful beaches to visit. The most famous of which is the inaccurately named 88 kilometre-long stretch of Ninety Mile Beach in the region's far north. The slightly longer Ripiro Beach lies further south A popular day trip is a scenic drive to visit Tane Mahuta a majestic Kauri tree. Although many of the region's kauri forests were felled during the 19th century, some areas still exist where this rare giant grows tall. New Zealand's largest tree, Tāne Mahuta, stands in the Waipoua Forest south of the Hokianga Harbour. A trip to Russell is another highly recommended experience, a relaxed lunch at the Duke of Marlborough and if the budget allows a night at Eagles Nest, Russells most scenic and beautiful accommodation. If you fancy some golf, Kauri Cliffs golf course is a par 72 championship golf course with ocean views from 15 holes. Ranked in the world top 100 with one of New Zealand’s best hotels and dining experiences to match your days activities. Anyone who has travelled to Northland will be able to tell you that it’s in a class of its own, a mix of a natural paradise and everything from 5 star boutique class accommodation to gorgeous beach batches, delicious local cuisine and so many activities. Discover for yourself why Northland is on everyone’s travel list and immerse yourself in the culture, hospitality and paradise of New Zealand’s best kept secret.

The evolution of tough. The first ever ute with the three-pointed star. Mercedes-Benz has revealed pictures of its new X-Class pickup, surely the classiest addition to the genre from the premium German manufacturer. A Mercedes-Benz pickup may seem strange, but it somehow works. While the new truck does promise to be utilitarian enough to get work done, Mercedes-Benz has said that it is clearly positioning the vehicle as a luxury offering. While Volkswagen has its Amarok, the X-Class beats rivals Audi and BMW in the race to sell cars that cover every possible niche on the market. The X-Class features a number of car-like firsts that you won’t yet find on similar models, such as smartphone connectivity. You can keep track of where your truck is, check on the fuel levels and seamlessly navigate from door to door. Good times. The X-Class takes styling cues from the GLS SUV at the front end, and at 5.3m long is able to offer a five-seat cabin as well as a hefty load bay, which is 1.6m long and has a maximum load rating of 1,042kg. Mercedes-Benz say that it will carry 17 full 50-litre barrels of beer and that it can tow a trailer containing three horses or an eight-metre yacht. The interior of the X-Class is familiar from other models in the range – the instrument panel is carried over from other parts of the range, and the floating tablet-style 8.4-inch display will be well known to A-Class drivers. That’s including a 5.4-inch screen that sits between the instrument dials.

Every day features such as electric adjustable powered seats with lumbar support offer room in the back for three people making the X-Class fairly desirable as family accommodation, not just as a day-to-day industrial workhorse. The cabin has numerous colour and accessory options available for personalisation should you really want to make the X-Class interior feel like home – there are six different seat covers and three sets of cockpit trim parts. There are three different specification levels – Pure, Progressive and Power – each aimed at emphasising a different side of the X-Class’s character. The X features tech pulled over from other areas of the MercedesBenz range - including Lane Keeping Assist and Active Brake Assist features universal to its 5-Star Safety Rating. From the outset, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class will be available with 220d and 250d diesel engines, which use the same 2.3-litre Diesel engine with single and

twin-turbochargers respectively to produce 165hp and 190hp. Both diesels are available with rear-wheel drive or engageable all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz Botany is New Zealand’s newest and most state of the art Mercedes-Benz dealership. Recently the Botany dealership became Auckland’s new home of Mercedes-Benz Light Commercial Vehicles which includes the new X-Class. The 6 cylinder 350d will be available for purchase in late 2018 and deposits are being taken for the first shipment of vehicles which will be available at Mercedes-Benz Botany in April. Mothers &Sons

AS FAR AS RELATIONSHIPS GO, IT’S HARD TO FIND ONE AS UNIQUE, SPECIAL AND UNCONDITIONAL AS THE BOND BETWEEN A MOTHER AND HER SON. WHETHER THEY’RE FOUR YEARS OLD OR 40 YEARS OLD, THAT CONNECTION NEVER DISAPPEARS.

T

here’s an unconditional love there that is hard to deny which slowly matures into a fiercely protective bond. Boys grow into men that want to be there for their mum, the way their mothers have always been there for them. Of course, it has not always been this way. In the 50’s and 60’s boys were out with their Fathers, working outdoors, or away fighting in a war they did not choose to be a part of. You would not find many, if any, boys baking in the kitchen, helping their mum decide what to wear or going to them for career advice. While this bond is apparent across history, the relationship has evolved and 2018 has many sons looking to their mothers for corporate advice and even going into business together. Of course, all relationships are unique and so we have focused on four experiences, across generations, to celebrate this special bond. Ricardo Simich (45 years) has fond memories of his mother’s, Ann Simich, modelling days. “From the 70’s, 80’s and through to now, we’ve always been incredibly close,” he explains. “Our bond really grew out of Mum as a model. I loved fashion and would go through the suitcases of her modelling days, and was just in awe.” “Women didn’t work, they didn’t go flatting. But I did all those things, I really was a career woman in a time when it was very unusual to be one,” muses Ann. “I never saw women as anything other than equal. I would be at school, and Mum would rush in from work, beautifully dressed up, and I really took pride in it,” notes Ricardo. The glamour of looking back at pictures started the bond, but it was Ann’s motivation to pursue a career for herself that really fostered their relationship. In 2002, they created an agency together, and the success is a testament to their unique bond. “Mum instilled a moral code in me, that I have kept with me throughout my life,” adds Ricardo. “She just has so much integrity, and brings it to everything she does. They [my parents] became my best friends, I would call Mum if I needed anything, not a friend, but my Mum.” This was natural, despite Ricardo moving out and overseas at the age of 18 years old. “Ricardo taught us so much,” replies Ann to this. “We learnt so much from him growing up, and even today, he is still teaching us.” For Heather Walton and Lisa Rufer, the bond is evident almost instantaneously with their sons, Harrison (13 years old) and Caleb (26 years old). “We’re so lucky, our children are like our best friends,” explains Heather, about herself and Lisa.

“It’s such a privilege and to be able to talk and express the bond and love that mothers and sons can have,” adds Lisa. “Mum is my best friend,” Caleb states simply, either not realising or not noticing the rareity of that statement for a 26 year old man. “She is the most special person to me and now that I’m experiencing more success, I get to show her that.” Lisa had already let us in on the Tiffany bracelet Caleb had bought her, along with a trip to Queenstown for the two of them. Their bond grew despite Caleb being away from the age of 16 to 21 years old, as he was a professional football player overseas. “If anything, our bond grew. The boundaries, love, and respect were there, and so the distance just brought out the values instilled in him.” Heather’s son, Harrison, is a few years younger but still looks at his mum with the same sense of love and pride. “Mum is always there for me, even speaks for me sometimes,” he laughs. When speaking about her career, it’s obvious how proud he is of her accomplishments. But it’s not her work that stands out for him, it’s the quality time, watching sunsets in Hawaii and simply just spending time together. This a new challenge for busy career women and can be difficult at times, to help create a perfect home and strive for the best in their industry. “There are so many things that terrify me for his future, from young girls, to social media. Boys are sensitive and they need protection,” says Heather. Gilda Kirkpatrick is ever the devoted mum, her eyes always on her two boys. Lucan (four years old) and Kyan (two years old) look to her for everything. “I was always a tomboy growing up - despite what people may think,” she explains.

11

“Mum is my best friend,” Caleb states simply.

“Mum instilled a moral code in me, that I have kept with me throughout my life,” adds Ricardo.

12

“There are so many things that terrify for his future, from young girls, to social media. Boys are sensitive and they need protection,” says Heather.

“All I want for them is to have the knowledge and education so that they can forge their own path in life, and truly be themselves. That’s all I hope for them,” Gilda concludes.

“Having two boys is something I am so comfortable with. They never bore you, and I love playing with them, outside or even gaming - it just suits me.” Despite the closeness of all these relationships, there is no sense of clinginess or desperate need to hold on. Looking at her boys running around, Gilda summed up her hopes for their future. “All I want for them is to have the knowledge and education so that they can forge their own path in life, and truly be themselves. That’s all I hope for them,” she concludes. That’s all it is, a unique bond that can’t be quantified, labelled or easily fit into a box. But there’s a deep love, a

deep friendship, and a mutual respect and protective love. It’s fierce, it spans generations and it makes the mother and son relationship something we all know or can relate to. It is often said that mother’s raise the world, our world. These strong women and their equally as strong sons illustrate it, every day of their lives. Nevertheless, it does not take much to see the flipside of this picture. Absent mothers, those with addictions, problems, and who cannot, or will not, put their children’s needs before their own. It is the breakdown of these relationships that leave society crying out, in a world full of crime, greed, and pain: “where are the mothers?”

New Zealand FashioncontiWeek n ues to deliver

N

NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK (NZFW) IS AN ANTICIPATED FIXTURE IN ANY FASHIONISTA’S CALENDAR. THE HYPE AND THE SPECTACLE THAT IS FASHION WEEK IS NOTHING LESS THAT INFECTIOUS. CREATED IN 2001, IT HAS GROWN TO BECOME THE CORNERSTONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S FASHION INDUSTRY.

ZFW gives our homegrown design talent the opportunity to shine and showcase their fashion flair nationally and internationally. Viewed as the launch pad for up and coming designers, I delight in seeing some of our well known designers and brands including Zambesi, Trelise Cooper and Kate Sylvester come together with new and evolving talent to achieve the recognition and accolades they have toiled so very hard for. The growth of NZFW is impressive and international interest in New Zealand fashion continues to flourish. In 2017 NZFW was host to 83 designers, 49 shows and over 30,000 local and international attendees. The reach of the event via a mix of traditional and social media platforms has allowed the New Zealand fashion industry the prominence it truly deserves on the world stage. Excitingly, our fashion industry profile is changing and so are the economic benefits the event delivers each year. Our local industry generates over NZD3.3B in retail sales and the domestic value of the fashion industry is valued at over NZD5.3B. Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) – on behalf of Auckland Council – has been a sponsor of NZFW since 2010. Made available via annual contestable funding rounds, ATEED has contributed over NZD1.2M to the event in the past six years. And so, the question begs, what is Fashion Week delivering in return?

NZFW delivers a big tick in the box on Auckland’s economic growth. It has positive financial impacts, attracts local and international visitors to the region and creates exposure for some of New Zealand’s leading and up and coming designers. Between 2012 and 2016 it is estimated that NZFW generated $6.2m for the Auckland regional economy with around 14,000 visitor nights – even better, the event continues to grow. The New Zealand fashion industry has not only established itself as a serious player on the world’s fashion stage but a growing contributor to our economy. We must continue to support the ongoing development of New Zealand fashion, our local designers and celebrate their successes. The Story Of Höglund Art Glass ART COMES IN MANY SHAPES AND FORMS HOWEVER THERE IS ONE PARTICULAR PRACTICE THAT FEW CAN MASTER AND THAT’S GLASS BLOWING. NEW ZEALAND IS HOME TO TWO WORLD-RENOWNED GLASS ARTISTS.

I

ntroducing Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg- Höglund creators of art glass since 1982 and owners of Höglund Art Glass. Partners in life, as well as design, Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg-Höglund have worked together as a team for almost five decades. Originally from Sweden, the duo came to New Zealand in 1982, before settling in Richmond’s picturesque countryside not far from Nelson. Shortly after, Ola and Marie sectioned part of their home as a studio for Höglund Art Glass, where together they continued the family tradition of glassblowing that began with Ola’s father back at Kosta Boda, Sweden. Now nearly 37 years later and still located at their original homestead, Ola and Marie’s sons, Ossie and Oliver have joined the family business as glassblowers. Art collectors from around the world often travel to New Zealand just to pay homage to Höglund Art Glass’ range of beautiful glass vases and bowls made using the rare Graal technique. The Graal technique is such a complex skill to master that there are only a few glass artists in the world who use it - two of whom are Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg-Höglund. However Ola and Marie haven’t only mastered this technique, they’ve also personalised it through combing their craftsmanship of Swedish heritage with a vibrant Pacific inspired flair in each piece. Ola and Marie’s artwork has earned them an international status as some of the best glass artists in the world and their work is highly sought after by both public and private collectors. Some of who include the King of Sweden, the King of Tonga, the Clinton Family as well as Mohammed Ali

and Elton John. There are two of Höglund’s Art Glass Studios in New Zealand, one is Höglund’s Glassblowing Studio & Gallery, located at 52 Lansdowne Road, Richmond in Nelson. The other is Höglund Art Glass Studio Gallery, situated in Central Otago at 1767 Luggate-Cromwell Road, off State Highway 6 between Cromwell and Wanaka. (50 mins from Queenstown) If you’re looking for a piece of art that is both rare and one of a kind, look no further than Höglund Art Glass, an internationally celebrated and respected New Zealand family business.

THE SECRET TO STYLISH LIVING

When moving apartments, houses, or even renovating your current residence it is always an exciting time. Once you’ve settled in, however, you want your home to reflect you while still looking on trend. Here’s a few ways to ensure your home is looking stylish without breaking the bank: 1. Accessorise with soft furnishings such as sheepskin rugs, bold cushions, and patterned throws. You’ll be surprised what a difference these small additions can make to a bedroom or a living room.

4. Choose a colour palette and stick to it. While it can be tempting to buy furnishings at will, choose a colour theme that you like and work everything around it, with one or two key accent colours.

2. Find a few prints that you love and have them framed (or 5. Invest in tubes or simply use ties that are able to purchase a frame). T he Apartment THAT EYE ALTERED A MINIMALIST LIFESTYLE IS OFTEN THE ANSWER TO COMFORTABLE LIVING IN A CITY APARTMENT, HOWEVER, THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED IS PROOF THAT THE POPULAR MINIMALIST APPROACH IS NOT A NECESSITY. NOW COMPLETE WITH SPECTACULAR RESULTS THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED IS EVERYTHING EYE MAGAZINE DREAMT IT WOULD BE.

T

he once typical, white and minimalist apartment kitchen now offers a spacious layout with impeccably designed high-end cabinetry and accompaniments. The design is modern, sophisticated and timeless, with high-quality cabinetry that boasts luxurious dark hues and contrasting brass metal accents. It’s through the collaboration of two renowned specialists, Mal from Mal Corboy Design, an award-winning kitchen and interior designer, and Design, Build, Join (DBJ), a high-quality cabinetry business, that this apartment is such a success.

32

Complementing the kitchen and tying into the theme seamlessly are a range of high-end, luxurious appliances from NEFF. Also from NEFF is a combination oven at the top and single oven at the bottom. An Induction Cooktop from NEFF is also included, ensuring both convenience and ease of use, while also freeing up time for more leisurely activities and for entertaining guests. To eliminate any odours and moisture caused from cooking, Mal selected a silent extractor and range hood from Schweigen, one of the most efficient air manufacturers of silent range hoods and bathroom fans in the world.

Strategically designed to maximise the use and storage of food is a fridge from Bosch, another seamless fit to the kitchen thanks to Mal’s beautiful design. However, the centrepiece of the kitchen would have to be the Caesarstone kitchen bench, which was cut and shaped by Architectural Stone. The bench fits beautifully with the black sink and tap from Paterson, which also features a water purifier from Parex, providing instant access to hot and cold water. Effortlessly transcending from the kitchen to the dining area sits a beautifully crafted dining table which, like the new gorgeous plates and dining accessories, is from French Country. The dining table is paired with Arthur Dining Chairs from David Shaw Furniture.

33

BEFORE

AFTER

24

As is also a matching ottoman that sits adjacent to the dining table. To create a slight Scandinavian feel an Icelandic Sheepskin from The Sheepskin Factory was placed atop of the ottoman. To balance the contrasting colours from the kitchen to the dining area, Mal chose light tan timber tiles from FortĂŠ Flooring.

Moving from the kitchen to the living area, comfort is clearly the focus of the room, which features a couch, ottoman and James Salmond coffee table all from David Shaw Furniture. The couch is decorated with a Snowshoe Hare Throw, Rabbit Fur and Mustard Cushions from Harrowset Hall and The Linen Store. At the advice of Mal and International Stylist Donna

Balasoglou, mustard cushions were added to carry the theme of the brass accents from the kitchen into the lounge. Also easing the transition from the dark hues of the kitchen cabinetry, to the lighter features of the living area, such as the wallpaper from Aspiring Walls, is the decor. The combined dark and light tones found in the Cowhide from Mooi and the Possum Rugs as well as the white flower tables from Matisse are a few examples of such decor. A beautiful arrangement of faux flowers from Fabulous Faux Flowers adds a feminine touch to the lounge. It’s easy to question how these pieces and colours could fit together when looking at them separately, however, with the help of Mal and Donna, everything has fallen perfectly into place. The Apartment That Eye Altered has been an amazing journey with a fantastic outcome. Watch this space for the next exciting project Eye will be working on. The Linen Company Stansborough throw

BUTCHERS DOING NEW ZEALAND PROUD

54

ON THE 5TH OF MARCH , TWO BUTCHERS FROM NEW WORLD EASTRIDGE, LUKA AND ZAK BOARDED A PLANE TO IRELAND TO COMPETE IN THE IFEX EXHIBITION. LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THEY WOULD COME BACK WITH WORLDWIDE TITLES AFTER COMPETING IN THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED EXHIBITION.

T

he IFEX Exhibition is Northern Ireland’s premier showcase of the latest food and beverage trends and innovation in catering equipment, and is attended by spectators and competition entrants from around the world. Luka, representing the NZ ANZCO Young Butcher Team, entered the Under 30 division of the World Young Butcher Competition. Up against 12 other butchers from ten competing countries, the competition involved breaking down a beef rump on the bone, a side of lamb and a loin of pork belly into a display of value-added cuts in just two hours. Two hours later Luka emerged from the international competition, claiming third place in the competition. “I started my apprenticeship with Foodstuffs in 2012, since then I have been to a few competitions in New Zealand and overseas, and I really enjoy doing

that as it’s a massive learning experience. However, when I first started I never thought it would take me all the way to Belfast. It was a tough competition and the nerves were high. I am so stoked to come out in third place”. “It’s been an incredible learning experience. I was grateful to have Zak there as it’s so intense you lose track of time, but I could hear him in the background pushing me to move faster. Having that support was extremely motivating,” says Luka. Zak who was a part of New Zealand’s Butchery Team, The Pure South Sharp Blacks, entered the World Butchery Challenge where they claimed second place, only just missing being crowned world champions. The Pure South Sharp Blacks had been training for 18 months prior to entering the World Butchery Challenge, and are ecstatic about coming second place after entering the competition for the first time. “The competition went really well. The team were well organised and worked great together throughout. Towards the end we were a bit pushed for time, however, we got it all done and ended up coming second. We’re rapt with the results,” says Zak. This goes to show the skill and support that is provided by business’ in New Zealand such as New World Eastridge in ensuring our apprentices can be all that they want to be. Congratulations to Zak and Luka for representing the Butchery Industry of New Zealand, we’re excited to watch you grow and the success which will follow in the future. You have done New Zealand and New World Eastridge proud!

AUTUMN IN QUEENSTOWN @ THE GRILLE AUTUMN IS MY FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR FOR FORAGING BECAUSE THERE’S SO MUCH VARIETY. ELDERBERRIES GROW IN THE HEDGEROWS IN RIDICULOUS QUANTITIES - I GATHER SO MANY THAT I CAN MAKE ENOUGH PRESERVES TO LAST THE WHOLE YEAR.

W

alnuts and sweet chestnuts are both prolific in Arrowtown, and I have gotten to know several untended plum, pear and fig trees. The most exciting thing about Autumn though is the mushrooms. Horse, field, pufballs and boletes all grow around here and finding them is like hunting; you never know exactly where or when they will appear. When they do appear, it tends to be en masse, so some careful dehydrating ensures we can use wild mushrooms in sauces and on bruschettas of our homemade bread for most of the Winter, so everyone can enjoy some real local flavour.
