Editor’s Let ter We can look in the mirror and say: I wish I was skinnier, I wish I was prettier or I wish I looked like her. Stop. Remember your body is a vessel that carries your spirit and your soul consisting of your mind, will and emotions which includes your personality, and as long as you are looking after your body, treating it with love and respect, caring for both your inside and your outside, your own unique beauty will shine through. I know when I get busy at work I don’t look after the basics like sleep and water, its so easy to forget these things. This is your grounding for feeling and looking good but most importantly be positive about yourself and treat yourself kindly. Not everything in beauty goes smoothly – see page 83 The Under Belly of the Beauty Industry. When you go to a beauty therapist it is ‘buyer beware’. In NZ beauty therapist are not required to be registered so check carefully before you book your treatments. On page 32 we celebrate 20 years of Operation Restore Hope, involving surgeons who give their time and skill to do life changing operations, and on page 8 to 12 Olga Gill, famous NZ make up artist showcases her skill in a gorgeous shoot. One thing you must read is on page 142 about The Edison clinic. The best way to help yourself is to get the actual facts on what your body is doing. This clinic is doing incredible things to assist our unhealthy nation! You will find in The Beauty Book our recommended plastic surgeons, appearance medicine Drs and those things we love to enhance our natural beings. Enjoy ❁

Throw your dry skin a lifeline this winter with Macadamia Oil
“...make your skin appear healther and more hydrated.”
It has long been a common beauty myth that oilbased products will appear greasy on your skin and lead to breakouts. This is simply not the case. Thursday Plantation has set out to change our perception of skin-care oils through their new Macadamia Oil Dry Skin Range. Macadamia oil contains palmitoleic acid, a naturally derived, essential fatty acid that helps the oil absorb easily and protect the skin’s natural lipid barrier. Thursday Plantation uses 100% natural macadamias for their ultra-hydrating properties, saving your skin from dryness this winter without clogging pores. Rather than causing a greasy complexion, macadamia oil will lock in moisture and make your skin appear healthier and more hydrated. ❁ THURSDAYPLANTATION.CO.NZ

Personalised Weight-Loss Powered by Science Making the decision to lose weight is often the easy part but actually following through and finding a program that works for you can prove to be much more difficult. Jay Harrison (pictured), the Co-Founder of Recal, sought to change this, starting with his Mother. Jay created a program utilising evidence-based protocols including intermittent fasting and the Ketogenic diet. After being diagnosed with pre-Diabetes, Jay’s Mother lost 15kg’s in 5-weeks and reversed her diagnosis. Her quick weight loss and improved overall well-being inspired Recal, easily found in Parnell’s St George’s Bay Rd. “We want to reframe the way people look at weight management,” says Jay. “It’s not just aesthetic, it’s a symptom of bad health. Once you start caring for your body and caring for your health, it naturally takes shape.” Every Recal client receives a personalised, evidence-based program using current science. This begins with the ‘OnBoarding’ process, where Jay and his team can assess your current state and work with you to create goals. Moreover, the program is managed by a health professional rather than guided online. This hands-on approach not only ensures accountability but also allows for health and well-being to remain at the forefront of the program, not simply just weight loss. Completely personalised, managed by experts, and powered by science, Recal provides the programs and support to become the best version of you. ❁ INFO@MYRECAL.COM MYRECAL.COM

c i t s Pla urgery s Over 14.6 million plastic surgery procedures are performed in the United States each year, including both minimally-invasive and surgical procedures. Of the nearly 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2017, the top 5 were : • Breast augmentation • Liposuction • Nose reshaping • Eyelid surgery • Tummy tuck Social Media Is Causing A Rise In Plastic Surgery
GOT SOMETHING TO LOSE? Does the size of your tummy interfere with your desired silhouette? Are diet and exercise just not helping? There are a number of reasons for this, including pregnancy, weight gain or loss, which may cause the lower abdomen to drop. Once stretched, the abdomen may fail to return to its original shape. Abdominoplasty, or a ‘tummy tuck’, can be the answer. Excess skin is removed, muscles tightened and sometimes liposculpture is performed to restore a smoother, flatter appearance. Talk to Mr Brandon Adams to learn more.

Introducing Tristan de Chalain Ltd For success in plastic surgery, reputation is everything. Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre (APSC) is known as one of the leading practices in New Zealand. However, change is in the air, with APSC rebranding as Tristan de Chalain Ltd. We sat down with Dr Tristan, to discuss what this change means for the practice. Rebranding always comes with a risk. Are you concerned about changing the name of APSC, given it’s great reputation? No, I don’t think so. I would like to think that anyone aware of APSC would be aware that I am one of the principals behind the firm and in moving to open my own enterprise, I will be taking with me all the values and standards that have made APSC one of the premier Plastic Surgery practices in the country, while at the same time enabling me to better express my individual expertise and interests. What will you be keeping from APSC in terms of values? At APSC we have always believed that the patient comes first. This will in no way change as we transition to the new regime. We will always place the patient and his or her needs, front and centre in our thinking. The best form of advertising is by word of mouth, through a happy patient who tells others of the experience. And we plan to make surgery through Tristan de Chalain Ltd a great experience. In an industry renowned for cheap shortcuts, at home and abroad, how important is

quality and care to you? I believe that our reputation speaks for itself in this regard. I have always believed that the dictum “near enough is good enough” has no place in plastic surgery and our surgery, our patient management and our aftercare all reflect this. We strive to anticipate and more than meet our patients’ needs while adhering at all times to the highest standards of clinical care and technical expertise. What would you like to say to those considering coming in for a consultation or treatment? At Tristan de Chalain Ltd, as we did at APSC, we want you, our patient, to have a first class experience, from your first contact to your final post-operative visit. We know that there are other practices and other excellent surgeons out there, but we want to be the best and we regard the work we do as a privilege. We are also fully aware of the trust implicit in a patient choosing to come to us for surgical care and we take that trust very seriously. ❁ PLASSURG.CO.NZ

20 Years of Restoring Hope Imagine waking up knowing that you’re less likely to succeed in life because of a birth defect that could be easily be reversed with medical care that you don’t have access to. This is what an estimate of 250,000 underprivileged children and adults in the Philippines face each day due to being born with a common birth defect, clefts of the lip and palate. Last year NZ Multimedia Magazines we’re privileged enough to help make a change by hosting a Charity Ball for Operation Restore Hope (ORH). Operation Restore Hope is a not-forprofit, non-governmental, non-sectarian charity, however, has been changing many of these individuals lives for the better for 20 years. The charity’s story began when Dr Christopher Wachsmuth, co-founder and president of “ORH Germany” and Tristan De Chalain, founder and president of “ORH New Zealand” first started operating on children from the slums of Manila in 1992. Together these two men formed Operation Restore Hope and every year since an experienced team of plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, technicians and admin staff have united with the aim to improve the lives of children suffering from a form of clefts of the lip and palate. This year Operation Restore Hope had a team of 32 highly specialised members, each with the same goal, to correct any clefts of the lip and palate and other facial deformities of children who would otherwise remain untreated and permanently disadvantaged. 2018’s mission proved to be another successful year for Operation Restore Hope who in four and a half days worked 14-16 hours per day to complete 78 surgical procedures. The number would have been 85 however 7 of the patients were cancelled due to being medically unfit to undergo the surgical procedure. Cancelling any surgical procedure is hard for both the surgeons and their patient and the patient’s parents however, their health and safety is paramount to the team at Operation Restore Hope; no risk that could place their patients lives in danger is worth taking the chance. Some of the patients will return next year and have the surgery needed to be done along with any children in need of follow up surgery. However hours of surgery is not all that takes place, the staff also taught and developed 32
The year 2018 marks 20 years of dedication from the volunteers of Operation Restore Hope who have provided nearly 2,000 children with a real chance of a self-determined life within society.
the skill of local volunteer medical staff who were working alongside the Operation Restore Hope team. Every year, the entire mission typically last seven days and is comprised of three surgical teams. Underprivileged families and their children, however, have been waiting to see if their child is suitable for the procedure for a long time, some of which travel on an exhausting journey of 24 hours the hospital. The first two days of the mission are utilized setting up theatres, wards and assessing prospective patients prior to commencing the surgical week. The other five days is when the three surgical teams operate simultaneously completing as much surgery as can be in each session, helping to ease the burden of both the patient and the patient’s parents. On the first operative day of the 2018 mission, the three teams had corrected 17 cleft lips and palates between them. One of the patients who received both cleft and lip surgery was 7-yearold Nathan. Nathan had stopped going to school due to excessive bullying, making his condition even harder to live with. It’s commonly known that trauma developed from bullying can play a major impact on a child’s psychosocial development, however, Operation Restore Hope’s correction of Nathan’s cleft will improve his integration into socialisation. Nathan now dreams of becoming a Police Officer and an advocate for children like him, educating people to be kind and respectful to each other.
The year 2018 marks 20 years of dedication from the volunteers of Operation Restore Hope who have provided nearly 2,000 children with a real chance of a self-determined life within society. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of ‘Operation Restore Hope’ the German Ambassador hosted an official reception at his residence in Manila along with Ambassador David
Strachan of New Zealand, together they assured Operation Restore Hope’s team of their fullest ongoing support. The support of the Ambassadors along with the ongoing support from fundraising and donations ensures 2019 will be another successful year for Operation Restore Hope. Already, over half of each fundraising goal for 2019’s mission has been achieved. It is without a doubt that the access we have to medicine and plastic surgery in New Zealand is often taken for granted. Charities such as Operation Restore Hope are who bring these privileges to light so that we too can help the underprivileged children in the Philippines. To support Operation Restore Hope, not only supports their mission in providing medical and surgical help to children in need but also improves each child’s chance of having a better future. Together from around the world, we can help to restore hope. The successful turnout and funds raised at the 2017 Charity Ball for Operation Restore Hope, brings us confidence that there will be another in the future. We’re proud to have supported Operation Restore Hope’s mission for 2018 and are grateful for sweat, blood and tears that all the volunteers from Operation Restore Hope put into changing the lives of nearly 2,000 children in 20 years. Dr Michelle Locke Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon MBChB, MD, FRACS (Plastics)
“The right breast reconstruction for you can depend on your body type, your lifestyle, your long term ideals and your personal preferences.”
Dr Michelle Locke specialises in all forms of breast reconstruction. She is regularly asked by her clients, “What’s the best type of reconstruction?”. This is not a straight forward question, as the best choice can be different for everyone. The right reconstruction for you can depend on your body type, your lifestyle, your long term ideals and your personal preferences. Here, Dr Locke tries to answer some of the most common questions she is asked.
“Is an immediate or a delayed reconstruction better?” Immediate reconstruction is performed at the time of your breast cancer surgery (mastectomy) while delayed reconstruction is performed some time later. Immediate reconstruction is often preferable, as it allows more of your breast skin to be preserved. This usually means a better cosmetic result in the long term. Sometimes immediate reconstruction isn’t recommended if your type of breast cancer means you’ll need further treatment, such as chemotherapy. In this case, it can be better to delay your reconstruction until you have fully recovered from your cancer treatment. “How long does breast reconstruction take?” There are several different ways to reconstruct breasts and each one takes a different amount of time. Generally, using breast implants is the quickest and simplest option. Sometimes this will be a two stage operation, with a process of expansion first before the definitive implant is placed. Making a breast from your own tissue (autologous 34
reconstruction) usually takes longer, but can often re-create the breast mound in a single operation. Regardless of the technique used, secondary operations are common, for touch up surgery and nipple reconstruction. “Will there be scars?” Implant based reconstruction can usually be performed through the mastectomy scars alone. Autologous reconstruction moves tissue from one part of your body (commonly the abdomen or back) to your breast area. This means there are additional scars in the other area. “How long do breast implants last?” Breast implants are medical devices which won’t last forever. On average, you will need more surgery to replace them about ten years later, but they can last much longer than this. However when you have breast implants placed, you must expect to have further surgery on your breasts at a later date. “What is the advantages of using my own tissue?” Making a breast from your own tissue is a much more major operation, but can give the best results. The reconstructed breast is entirely natural and the appearance is usually stable and permanent. Newer techniques such as the DIEP flap allow your muscles to be spared, so core strength is preserved. To meet Dr Locke and discuss which reconstruction is best for you, contact St Marks Breast Centre in Auckland. ❁ 0800 786 2757 DRMICHELLELOCKE.CO.NZ

The cost of otoplasty ranges between $7,000 to $9,000. EYE LID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY) Eye Lid Surgery or blepharoplasty gives the eyes a more youthful appearance. This procedure removes loose skin and drooping around the eyelids to reduce the look of tiredness and pu ness. The cost of a combined upper and lower blepharoplasty ranges between $9,000 to $12,000. FACELIFT (RHYTIDECTOMY) A facelift or rhytidectomy gives the face an overall refreshed appearance by tightening and rming the skin of the face and neck. The cost of a basic lower face, facelift ranges between $17,000 to $20,000. NOSE SURGERY (RHINOPLASTY) Nose Surgery or rhinoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the nose. This procedure remodels the shape of the nose and achieves a more desirable look by eliminating bumps and correcting both the frontal and pro le view. This surgery is also used to improve the function of the nose so is not always for aesthetic purposes. The end result is a more symmetrical and balanced nose that complements the other facial features. The cost of a rhinoplasty ranges between $10,000 to $13,000.
BREAST AUGMENTATION Breast augmentation, possibly one of the most popular surgical procedures, is sought by women who want to increase the size of the natural breast. This procedure makes the breasts larger and fuller. The cost of a breast augmentation ranges between $11,000 to $14,000. BREAST LIFT (MASTOPEXY) The breast lift, or mastopexy procedure moves the nipples into a higher position and lifts the breasts to obtain a more rm and shapely appearance. The cost of a breast lift ranges between $12,000 to $15,000. BREAST REDUCTION (MAMMOPLASTY) Breast reduction surgery, or mammoplasty, reshapes and lifts the breasts by removing excess breast tissue. This procedure relieves the weight of large breasts and creates smaller, more proportioned breasts. The cost of breast reduction surgery ranges between $12,000 to $15,000. TUMMY TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY) A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty removes excess fat and skin around the abdomen area and tightens the muscles to achieve a smoother, atter appearance. The cost of abdominoplasty ranges between $14,000 to $17,000. MOLE AND SKIN CANCER REMOVAL Mole and skin cancer removal is a procedure in which high risk moles or skin cancers are removed from the body that have developed due to high levels of sun exposure. The cost of mole removal ranges between $500 to $1,300. LIPOSCULPTURE Liposculpture is used to reshape the body by removing bulges and fatty deposits that are hard to lose through diet and exercise. It is commonly performed on the thighs, hips, abdomen and buttocks. The overall result gives the body a slimmer look and creates natural rounded curves. The cost of Liposculpture ranges depending on the amount of fat removed. The average cost is around $9,000. â?

veins, and appearance medicine. These treatments have helped countless patients across New Zealand reignite their confidence. One of their latest treatments caused headlines when it was first announced; the popular fatfreezing treatment Cooltech™. Cooltech™ is not a weight-loss programme, but rather a body-sculpting treatment. No matter how many long hours you put in at the gym, there can often be that stubborn part of your body
that doesn’t quite look the way you’d like it to. This treatment is perfect for those pockets of fat that won’t shift despite diet and exercise. The technology works by freezing away fat deposits so that the fat cells then crystalise, die and are eliminated through your body’s natural processes. More than one million Cooltech™ treatments have been performed in more than 40 countries and have left many patients extremely happy. It’s

clinically proven and doesn’t require any time off work. This innovative fatfreezing treatment is turning heads and gaining excellent results. The team at Skin Institute are proud to provide patients with state-of-the-art Cooltech™ technology. Skin Institute is always at the forefront of new and innovative cosmetic procedures, bringing the best to New Zealanders. Belkyra®, which reduces double-chins, has had patients sighing with relief that a non-invasive, effective solution was finally available for this area. Belkyra® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the area under the chin to improve your profile. Belkyra® contains a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid which imitates our naturally occurring deoxycholic acid. When injected under the chin, it works by bursting the fat cells like a balloon. The fat released
by the fat cells is then removed by the body’s repair system and transferred by the bloodstream into the liver where it gets excreted out of the body. Research has shown that this treatment is effective at removing the superficial fat lying on top of the platysmas muscles in the neck. Alongside these cutting-edge procedures, Skin Institute has a range of medical grade laser-based options for patients. Tackling skin inconsistencies through laser treatments is minimally invasive, safe, and, most importantly, produces results. Moreover, because of their multi-disciplinary approach and access to doctors, if an appearance medicine nurse spots a lesion of concern, it can be checked on the spot by a doctor to ensure it’s safe to proceed with the laser treatment. Skin Institute selects only the best practitioners, and with a large team across 18 clinics nationwide, offers

FaceWorks - the subtle approach Used to soften wrinkles, reshape lips and replace lost volume, injectable cosmetic treatments such as Botox® and dermal fillers are extremely popular. But they can still inspire confusion among the very cautious. How to counter that? Find a practitioner you can trust. Dr Teresa Cattin is immediate past -President of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM) and has been teaching other doctors throughout NZ, Australia and Asia-Pacific for over 15 years. Dr Cattin has been invited to lecture and run teaching workshops in numerous countries including India, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Bali and the Phillipines. Together with her daughter Leigh, a registered nurse and now in her third year of medical training, Teresa owns and operates the highly regarded clinic FaceWorks, on Auckland’s Apollo Drive. Both women are passionate about the French approach to appearance medicine known as La French Touche,

which suggests tiny amounts of Botox® and filler should be used to soften and refresh rather than significantly change facial features. The results are naturally beautiful. “Like any pharmaceutical Botox® can be prescribed incorrectly. So it makes sense to choose someone who is properly trained and up to date with advances in cosmetic medicine,” says Teresa. Leigh, 30, who has a particular interest in Botox® and lip enhancements for younger patients, has already developed her own FaceWorks following. “One of the best things about Botox® is its ability to prevent wrinkles from forming,” she says. “It stops facial muscles from contracting, and if you can’t crease you can’t develop the deeper lines that make you look older than you feel.” She is also impressed by the ability of injectables to enhance a client’s natural beauty. “Sometimes a lip may be slightly too thin or asymmetrical, and a minimal amount of product can make all the difference in a way that is not at all obvious.” Teresa, one of the first medical professionals in New Zealand to realise

Minimising the risk of your next Cosmetic Medicine procedure By choosing an NZCSM doctor you can be confident that you are in good hands.
As the demand for cosmetic procedures increases, some consumers are looking for a deal. They may hear of a cheap injector working out of their house and think it’s a great bargain. What they don’t realise is practitioners like these may have no New Zealand qualification, use counterfeit products, non-sterile syringes, or dangerous techniques. The risks are not just a poor result, but complications include infection, blindness, scarring and disfiguration and in extreme circumstances deaths have occurred. This is an unacceptable development that has gone largely unchecked in Europe and Australia. The NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine was founded 15 years ago to address these concerns and protect New Zealand patients from the excesses seen in other parts of the world where it is seen as the patient’s job to sort out the qualified from the unqualified practitioners. NZSCM is the single unified body in Cosmetic Medicine in New Zealand, representing the profession and providing training, supervision and professional accreditation. What differentiates an NZSCM doctor? Cosmetic Medicine professionals cannot merely “join up” to NZSCM. After qualifying as a Fellow of the GP College or other related Fellowships in surgery, dermatology or ophthalmology, a candidate applies to study the two year Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine. The diploma course involves dozens of training workshops and lectures, and culminates in both written and practical examinations. Once a doctor passes the

To ensure ongoing quality for patients, all members are assessed three yearly to confirm participation in medical education and the upholding of Society standards. By choosing an NZSCM doctor you can be confident that you are in the hands of a well trained and competent practitioner, using safe and effective products. With an NZSCM doctor you’ll be made fully aware of the details of the procedure and possible side effects, and the results you can realistically expect. Every patient has the right to decline procedures, no matter how much time they have spent with their doctor in discussions. NZSCM is about educating you, the patient, as well as our practitioners. Before you go ahead with a treatment, check if your doctor is NZSCM accredited. Cheap cosmetic procedures may seem to save money, but you can end up paying a much higher price long term, fixing mistakes made by incompetent, poorly trained practitioners. In an NZSCM accredited clinic you can rest assured you will receive the best advice, be well-informed of the risks and results, and have a positive experience. ❁

Are Dermal Fillers Safe? We talked to Dr Teresa Cattin, director of FaceWorks Appearance Medicine and pastPresident of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine about how safe dermal fillers really are. Do you think dermal fillers are potentially dangerous to our health? “Dermal filler” is a general term used to cover all sorts of different products which are injected into the face to soften lines, rejuvenate lips and replace volume loss. There are well over 200 on the market worldwide and not all are considered “safe” in terms of the ingredients. As a guideline the temporary hyaluronic based dermal fillers are considered the medically “safest” group to use as hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in our bodies. The most popular dermal fillers used and registered in NZ are all made of hyaluronic acid. So if the dermal fillers used in NZ are safe do we need to worry about side effects? We definitely do need to be aware of side effects. While the product itself may be considered safe from a medical point of view (in that there is a very low risk of allergic reaction etc) the actual process of injecting a substance into the face is not without risk. Many of the most common side effects are simply due to a needle being injected into the skin (i.e. redness, bruising, swelling) rather than the product itself. There has been a lot in the media recently about dermal fillers causing blindness- is that true? There have been just over 100 cases of blindness reported worldwide to date, with 28 of these due to hyaluronic acid filler. The blindness has occurred when
52
filler has been injected into one of the blood vessels which supplies the eye. The vision loss has been permanent in all cases even with prompt intervention by an Ophthalmologist. North & South magazine have reported on the only case of blindness caused by filler in NZ to date. While the risk is very low, considering the millions of dermal filler treatments which have been performed world wide over the last 20 years or so, this is a devastating and life changing event for the patient involved. It’s very concerning and is a topic which is being exhaustively discussed and analysed both within NZSCM (New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine) and with our colleagues internationally. So if I want a dermal filler treatment how can I avoid any risk? The short answer is you can’t completely eliminate all risk. Botox and dermal fillers are medical treatments for a reason and should only be performed by suitably trained and qualified medical practitioners who have a specialised knowledge of facial anatomy and can recognise and manage adverse events. There are certain areas of the face which are well known to be “high risk” areas in particular the nose, temples and lower forehead because we know the blood vessels in those areas connect directly to the eye. Amongst experienced injectors these are generally considered “no go” areas for dermal fillers. The vast majority of cases of blindness have occurred when these high risk areas have been injected with filler.
The New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM) has been actively lobbying for many years to improve the regulations around who can perform these cosmetic medicine procedures and restrict them to suitably trained practitioners. In NZ there is only one accredited training course in appearance medicine (the Diploma of Cosmetic Medicine) which is open only to doctors and is facilitated by NZSCM. This is a 2 year intensive postgraduate training course for specialists or experienced General Practitioners who are Fellows of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Once qualified all members of NZSCM are required to prove they are keeping up to date with ongoing training and learning within the field of cosmetic medicine and their clinics are subject to 3 yearly audit as required by the NZ Medical Council. If I am interested in having treatment with a dermal filler what’s your advice? Like any medical procedure you can’t completely avoid the risk of an adverse event with dermal fillers but there is an obvious advantage in taking your time, doing your homework and finding a well trained and competent practitioner. ❁ Visit https://nzscm.co.nz/consumerinfo/why-choose-an-nzscmdoctor for the list of fully qualified practitioners in your area or look for this logo.

“After about a week my skin started to glow ... It really is one of the most effective results I have ever had!”
Considering A Skin Peel? Read this first… As we get older, signs of ageing and sun damage can start to show, Professional peels can help with a range of skin care problems including breakouts and acne damage as well as treating the signs of ageing and improving skin radiance. The Beauty Book Editor Vanessa Bennett tried out mesoestetic’s cosmelan skin peel, provided by Advanced Dermacare, as a way to reduce pigmentation. “I was excited to try this peel, I’d heard great things about the brand,” said Vanessa. Professional brand mesoestetic has gained a reputation as providing the world’s leading professional pigmentation methods, such as their cosmelan and dermamelan treatments. Pigmentation, according to mesoestetic, affect more than 90% of adults over the age of 50 years. Their popular brightening treatment, cosmelan, targets brown patches and discolouration by fading pigment caused by melatonin production and suppressing further pigment from developing.
54
It combines a professional depigmenting treatment designed to eliminate or reduce dark spots of melanic origin on skin with skin products that unify the skin tone and enhance skin luminosity. “The peel stayed on my face for most of the day. Bright orange and very unattractive but I knew I had to do this to get results as my pigmentation has been bothering me for some time.” “When the peel came off my skin was quite red but still okay and not sore,” adds Vanessa. Advanced Dermacare provided at home product to help soothe the skin post-peel. This included product for night as well as daytime use, including moisturising sun-protection. “The next day peeling slowly started getting worse each day until my skin was like a snake - peeling and dry. Each day, the products were having a great impact and I was excited to see the final result.” “After about a week my skin started to glow and I could see my pigmentation was nearly gone. It really is one of the most effective results I have ever had!” ❁ ADVANCEDDERMACARE.CO.NZ

The 101 on how to choose the right clinic and professional therapist.
Today the beauty industry has blown up with Spas and skincare clinics popping up on every corner. Quite often, many of these do not have qualified and/or registered beauty therapists. So we spoke to Kim Ryan, President of the New Zealand Beauty Professional Association to get the 101 on how to choose the right clinic and professional therapist.
Kim, what would be the 5-point checklist in choosing the right clinic and/or therapist? 1. First, check the store frontage to see if they have an NZRBPA sticker on the window. This shows you that they are not only registered but are a current member of the NZRBPA. 2. Check the wall for council licenses. Cleanliness and approved licenses keep you safe. 3. Check to see if your therapist is a qualified Beauty Therapist. You don’t want someone working on your face that doesn’t know what he or she is doing. 4. Is your Therapist qualified to do the procedure that you are having done. There are different levels of training and some therapists have not covered all training required for some advanced treatments. 5. Look for reviews on their website or referrals. Word of mouth is always a good gauge. I can only imagine then, there would be some red flags too? What are the 5 DON’TS when choosing a clinic and /or therapist? 1. Don’t go to an unregistered clinic – you have NO recourse.Don’t choose an unqualified therapist – ask to see qualifications. 2. Check for council licensing, if you can’t see it, they probably don’t have it! 3. Be wary of cheap pricing – buyer beware. 4. Look at the state of the rooms - especially wax pots and pedicure areas. If they look mucky, then there are potential health risks. Lastly Kim, what would be your 3 top tips for our readers, that they could start TODAY, to see a better skin in the mirror? 1. Only choose a Registered and qualified beauty therapist. He/she will start you on the right journey for your skin. 2. Always use a professional product range, ask your therapist lots of questions. 3. Always use broad spectrum sunscreen all year round. ❁

Skinsmiths skincare is a bit different. They’re not about beauty products or confusing packaging – they are about getting results. It's that simple. We all know there’s a place for the extra products, but they aren’t a mandatory for maintaining healthy skin. Skinsmiths Founder, Jackie Smith explains “We don’t offer any products that compete with one another, each product has been formulated with a clear purpose in mind. We don’t need to confuse with complex words and busy packaging.” If you only have time for the bare minimum, Jackie Smith explains the two steps not to be missed: “Always start with broad spectrum sunscreen to protect the cell’s DNA and its function, and end the day with a cleanse so that the skin cells can do their magic
overnight and restore their skin.” And, if you’re wanting to treat specific concerns (because sometimes our skin needs a little extra help), add a targeted product with active ingredients to your regime. Think of these as your secret weapon and bring them out when you need them. The Skinsmiths range includes products to cleanse, hydrate, treat and protect. SkincareRX provides skincare regimens that target specific mechanisms of skin health with scientifically proven ingredients. Cell communicating ingredients have the ability to tell a skin cell to look, act and behave better, more like a healthy skin cell would, or to stop other substances from telling the cell to behave badly or abnormally. They do this by either direct communication with the skin cell or by blocking damaging cellular pathways or other cell-communicating substances. Cell communicating ingredients such as peptides, and tyrosinase inhibitors complement antioxidants to improve cell function. Cell renewing, hydrating and moisturising ingredients improve the appearance and function of the skin and create an ideal foundation for all ingredients to work more effectively. SkincareRX dermaceutical skincare Cleansers, Specialists and Essentials are formulated with just the right combination of ingredients based on these ingredient categories: AHA’S (alpha hydroxy acid) and BHA (beta hydroxy acid) work as cell renewal agents with antiageing and anti-acne benefits. Anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories inhibit the key mediators of inflammation and aging processes. They help reinforce, protect and boost the antioxidant response system. ❁ YOUTHBEAUTY.CO.NZ/SKINCARERX

Treat Your Skin at Howick’s Luxe Skin Boutique Located in Howick is Mooi Skin, a luxe skin boutique that offers the latest in anti-ageing treatments. The only clinic of it’s kind in the far Eastern suburbs, Mooi Skin empowers women to look and feel beautiful without invasive procedures. With a team of skin experts that boast over 15 years experience each, Mooi Skin offers a combined approach that puts the patients’ wellbeing and lasting results at the forefront. We spoke with Founder and Director Haley Asbridge about their treatments and this philosophy. What treatments do you offer and why these in particular? At Mooi Skin, we offer a huge range of treatments from relaxation right through to advanced skincare treatments to target specific skin concerns and conditions. Additionally, we specialise in correcting skin concerns and maintaining beautiful, healthy skin so you can look and feel your very best. Some of our favourite treatments are Collagen Induction therapy, we have 3 different types depending on the result we are trying to achieve such as maintenance, anti-ageing or scarring. We also love IPL and cosmelan to treat pigmentation and sunspots successfully and we have a huge range of medical grade peels, retinol treatments and led lights to keep the skin looking younger for longer. We have chosen to invest in top of the line equipment and premium products so that our clients get the very best results they can. This is something new for an East Auckland clinic and we have the most beautiful surroundings so you can feel like your in a complete haven while you receive these serious skin treatments. 64
Why is it so important to backup these treatments at home? Homecare is responsible for 70% of your results. It is an extremely important part of the process and you can only achieve really visible results with cosmeceutical and medical grade skincare on a daily basis. We liken it to diet and exercise - they go hand in hand and you need both to be good to get desirable results. The key ingredients that are paramount in a good routine are vitamin A, B, C and antioxidants. Mooi Skin customises every treatment - how does this affect the final result? Each person’s skin is unique and there is not one brand or treatment that fits all skin types. As such, we have a large number of products and treatment options. The benefit of this is that we can truly tailor each individual treatment to ensure you get the best outcome as soon as possible. We analyse the skin and each and every treatment to ensure we are on the right track and getting the result we are working towards. This means our clients can achieve better, faster results, all in our luxe, Mooi, environment. ❁ MOOISKIN.CO.NZ

Remove, Renew and Restore - with Corbin Rd. Cleansing + Exfoliating System ‘Pollu-Ageing’ is the biggest buzzword in dermatology today and the detrimental effect of the blue light emitted from our devices is widely recognised by those in professional skin circles. It’s now more important than ever that our cleansing and exfoliating routine not only removes make-up and dirt, but also counteracts the effects of modern life, without imparting additional chemical stress to the skin. ENTER, CORBIN RD. CLEANSING + EXFOLIATING SYSTEM This two-step synergistic system is set to revolutionise the way we cleanse and exfoliate, not simply cleansing and polishing the skin, but also fighting Pollu-Ageing and helping to counteract the damaging blue light emitted from our devices. Step One is the all-natural, deep-cleansing Corbin Rd. Restorative Cleansing Balm. It melts away make-up and effectively purges the skin of toxins, pollution, debris and dirt. As it does so, it nurtures and calms pollu-stressed skin, restores hydration, rebalances pH and maintains the strength of the skin’s protective barrier. It also sets the path for Step Two – effective and easy exfoliation with the unique, innovative Corbin Rd. Viteve TM Silk Exfoliating Cloth. The first of its kind, this breakthrough new cleansing cloth works to remove the balm, as well as draw out debris, exfoliate dead skin cells and congestion, buff skin to unparalleled radiance and improve circulation to the cells. It also delivers proteins and amino acids to the epidermis, thereby supporting the protective barrier and strengthening the skin. THE TWO WORK IN PERFECT SYNERGY The nurturing oils in Corbin Rd. Restorative Cleansing Balm dislodge debris on the skin’s surface, prepping it to be whisked away with the Corbin Rd. Viteve TM Silk Exfoliating Cloth. The unique texture and proteins of this exfoliating cloth lift away this debris, slough dead skin cells and clear congestion. This, coupled with the massaging action required to use the cloth, also stimulates blood flow to the cells, upping the radiance factor further.
make-up and debris, restore the skin, encouraging strength and suppleness and renew its vibrancy and radiance. Corbin Rd. Restorative Cleansing Balm is formulated around New Zealand native kawakawa, kiwifruit and sweet almond oil, together with a refined and exacting balance of 10 additional oils, including Rosehip, Kiwifruit seed, macadamia and apricot seed. The balm is completely free from petrochemicals, parabens, ethyl alcohols, sulphates, preservatives, silicones and perfumes. The Corbin Rd. Viteve TM Silk Exfoliating Cloth is made from 100 percent natural silk protein filament and exfoliates without using microbeads or microfiber particles that damage our already fragile ecosystem. TO USE Simply warm a pea sized amount of Corbin Rd. Restorative Cleansing Balm between your hands to soften, then massage all over your face and neck, including the eye area. The nurturing oils in this formula will penetrate the epidermis to help soften and dislodge dead cells, dirt, pollution and debris that has accumulated in the pores. Next, dampen the Corbin Rd. Viteve TM Silk Exfoliating Cloth with hand hot water and hold over the face for just a few seconds. Then, begin massaging in firm but gentle circular movements. The natural sloughing texture of the silk protein filament will help draw out and remove impurities, while the amino acids that naturally occur in the Corbin Rd. Viteve TM Silk Exfoliating Cloth protect and revitalise the complexion. Rinse and repeat for perfectly cleansed, exfoliated, nutrient-infused rehydrated skin! ❁ +64 21 812 999

Evolu Marks 21 Years With The Release Of ‘New Generation’ 3-in-1 Beauty Oil Introducing ‘Seeds of Love’, the sublime superflora dry oil that is a three-in-one multi-tasker - for face, body and hair - with an added ‘wow’ factor of a gorgeous allnatural fragrance. Developed to celebrate their first 21 years of natural beauty, the category-changing ‘beauty kit’ can be worn everywhere and epitomises the brand founder’s philosophy of producing holistic natural beauty solutions. “Oils for the skin have become a booming category in the natural skincare world, and Seeds of Love really stands out due to its innovative multi-purpose function, ‘dry oil’ texture with a delicate floral scent that is so beautiful, you’ll want to wear it as a fragrance” says KATI KASZA, Evolu founder. The expert blend of botanical oils from seeds (Camellia, Chia, Grape), nuts (Argan, Macadamia, Sweet Almond), and leaves (Kawakawa) work synergistically to nourish, hydrate, smooth and repair, whilst the superfine ‘dry oil’ texture is easily absorbed leaving the skin looking radiant. A qualified perfumer, Kati is recognised in the industry for expertly blending botanicals to maximise the sensory and healing impact from each Evolu product. “Rather than one fragrance for all products, I select our plant actives and essential oils for both their functional power and their fragrance potency” she says. Seeds of Love is a 100% natural floral fragrance with notes of citrus, gardenia and vanilla that is described as “evocative of a sun-warmed stroll through a white-flower meadow”. Camellia, used for centuries to hydrate the skin and hair, is a premier active in this blend – which is especially fitting given the white Camelia is the symbol of Kate Sheppard’s women’s suffragette movement that turns 125 this year. Kati sees this latest new release as the perfect expression of her original vision for Evolu which was “to harness the power of botanicals to achieve an ideal balance of true radiance and sensory delight for the benefit of all.” Evolu products can be bought from selected NZ department stores and pharmacies and online at evolu.com. ❁ EVOLU.COM

“...to harness the power of botanicals to achieve an ideal balance of true radiance and sensory delight.”
Environ Skincare Environ Skincare has been named the ‘Top Medical Skin Care’ company in the prestigious and highly revered Aesthetic Everything® Awards, a global competition that recognises excellence across a range of categories. Cape Town based Environ, has received over 100 other recognitions for outstanding products worldwide. It was also awarded the Swiss Vitamin Institute seal, verifying the strength and effectiveness of Environ’s vitamin A moisturisers and serums. The brand is favoured and lauded by international skin care therapists, dermatologists, beauty editors, top film stars and super models. This phenomenal skincare brand was established internationally in 1990 and 2019 marks 21 years of Environ in New Zealand. The Dr Des Fernandes, rated amongst the top five plastic surgeons in the world, was a pioneer in the 1980s of the introduction of vitamin A into skin care formulations - a ground-breaking development in skincare. He was the first to use vitamin A in high enough doses to help counteract the harmful effects of the environment, pollution and stress and create radiant, visibly improved skin. Dr Des has pioneered many world-firsts, such as the innovative Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™ Cool Peel® Technology, and Collagen Induction Therapy (rolling/needling). In 1998, he took Environ’s skin care knowledge into the technology field with the launch of the patented Ionzyme® DF Machine – the world’s first low frequency sonophoresis and iontophoresis facial treatment, and in 2018 introduced the revolutionary and convenient Focus Care™ Skin Tech+ Electro-Sonic DF Mobile Skincare Device designed to be used at home to make a lasting difference to the skin’s overall appearance. Since he founded Environ in 1990, vitamin A has become the cornerstone ingredient in the Environ skin care philosophy. We talk to Dr Des about how to achieve the healthiest skin: What can you expect when you first start using vitamin A? We believe that skin has a life and that vitamin A is the “oxygen” it needs to look beautiful and healthy for life. As Vitamin A improves skin density and texture, your skin will feel smoother and plumper. Skin also has a radiance and softness and therefore does look younger. The key is to maintain and gradually increase these levels, which is why I developed the Environ STEP-UP SYSTEM™ – this allows skin to gradually adjust to increased levels of vitamin A and other ingredients. Alongside this, you should introduce peptides, antioxidants and of course sunscreen. Once you have developed a good skin routine, you can then add the Environ Cosmetic ROLL-
72
CIT™ to improve the penetration of these key ingredients to enhance results and if you want to go one step further, the at-home Electro-sonic DF Mobile Device which uses iontophoresis and sonophoresis to treat frown lines on the forehead and or between eyebrows; smile lines and fine wrinkles around the eyes; upper lip lines; hyper-pigmented marks from sun damage; double chin and also minor scars. Is there any right age to add retinol to your regime? Retinol is a rather aggressive molecule and can induce retinoid reactions very easily, even at low doses. I prefer that retinol is introduced to skin only after the skin retinoid receptors have become more normalised by other ‘softer’ version of vitamin A that are equally effective but won’t irritate the skin as much. They are “softer” because the vitamin A component is “wrapped” in fat (palmitate) which is a desired chemical and the vitamin A gets absorbed with lower levels of retinoid receptors without irritating the outside membranes of the cell. I like people to be able to use high doses of retinyl esters and in the Environ system I like them to be on the Skin EssentiA AVST Level 4 or 5 before introducing Environ Retinol 1 slowly. What about vitamin C? Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and acts as a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radical damage on the skin, uneven skin tone and redness. We use vitamin C in the new Focus Care Radiance+ range which has a 3-step Mela-Smart system comprised of 4 products which help inhibit the formation of hyperpigmentation. The Intense C-Boost Mela-Even Cream within this range is a technologically advanced vitamin C infused cream which reveals a brighter, more evenly radiant and healthier-looking skin. Vitamin C is easily oxidized and needs to be stable in a formulation when used on the skin. Environ skincare provides an oil soluble stable solution of active Vitamin C that is easy to use and highly effective. And vitamin B? We use different forms of vitamin B which help to improve hydration, pigmentation reduction and also for their antioxidant and energizing effects on the skin. Vitamin Bs are important for skin health and we concentrate on vitamin B3 (niacinamide) vitamin B5 (pathenol), B12. The most important thing you can do to improve your skin health generally is introduce Vitamin A with the Environ STEPUP SYSTEM™, use additional antioxidants, along with the other ingredients and tools we have available, and make sure you use sunscreen all year round. Because Environ contains active ingredients it is important to seek the advice of a trained Environ skincare professional. ❁

Jane Iredale – THE SKINCARE MAKEUP™ The better women feel about themselves, the better the world is. Iredale Mineral Cosmetics is a mineral makeup company developed by founder, Jane Iredale, that embraces the holistic approach to beauty. The innovative, cutting-edge mineral powder foundation that launched her eponymous cosmetics line, jane iredale, 25 years ago, was the first to offer healthy skincare benefits in addition to beautiful coverage. Jane’s goal has always been ‘to make products that look good, feel good, and are good for the skin.’ Headquartered in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, where abundant natural beauty and a culture of healthy, mindful living inform and inspire, the jane iredale brand has grown into a comprehensive collection of mineral makeup products that nourish the complexion inside and out. Embedded in the DNA is the belief that makeup is at its best when it doesn’t try to make a woman conform to the latest fashion trends, but embraces her natural beauty and allows her personality to shine. jane iredale is also the number one makeup line recommended by dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the United States and is today offered in more than 50 countries through fine spas and salons, destination resorts, appearance medicine and medical offices. We asked Jane for some makeup advice: Hiding Redness Definitely not green! Choose a gold-toned base: Green leaves a gray, ghost-like pall, which is very unattractive. Yellow is the best shade to colour correct redness in the skin, so when disguising a red under-eye area or a red nose, we recommend choosing a foundation with more yellow/gold pigment like BB6 Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream or Golden Glow PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation. Warm Sienna, Warm Silk, and Amber also work well. Try blue eye makeup: When the whites of our eyes start to appear red, we like to trade our Black or Brown eyeliners for our Midnight Blue Eye Pencil. The sapphire shade helps counteract the red and whitens the area near it. Decreasing Inflammation Highlight the right spots: If the under-eye area is a little puffy, use the following concealer trick. Never highlight
74
“The most beautiful cosmetic you can wear is healthy skin.” or add light concealer “on the puff.” Apply highlighter or concealer lower than the inflamed area, “below the orbital bone.” This will reduce the shadow caused by puffiness. Define your brow: The simplest way to draw attention from puffy eyes is to emphasize another area of your face. Try using our Retractable Brow Pencil to fill and define your brow in seconds. Perfect Foundation Make sure you allow your moisturiser to absorb first and then use a primer!: We have two – Smooth Affair and Smooth Affair for Oily Skin. They will help to control shine and give more even coverage without a lot of work. Test for the right foundation colour by trialling it on your jawline in broad daylight. For a matte finish choose PurePressed Base. Apply the minerals in thin layers in downward strokes with the brush. Then spritz with one of our facial sprays and blot. Cosmetic Treatments Is the loose or pressed powder better for post-laser? Either will cover the redness and give the necessary sun protection. Keep in mind, however, that the new skin after laser is extremely sensitive and the fewer ingredients you have to worry about, the better. The loose powders contain less than the pressed. Our advice on lasered skin is to keep it as simple as possible. How soon can jane iredale makeup be applied after laser, microdermabrasion or peels? The minerals can be applied immediately after a microdermabrasion or a light peel, provided the skin has not been broken. They will not only cover the redness, but the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide may help to soothe the skin. Application after laser resurfacing must depend on the physician’s permission. Men Can men use jane iredale? Yes. Because the minerals are undetectable, men feel comfortable wearing them. In fact, newscasters are now using the powders on high definition television because their old makeup was obvious to the television cameras. “Skin health is the ultimate foundation” - Jane ❁ PSB.NET.NZ

Suzy H Skin Nutrition Suzy H Skin Nutrition is a medical grade high quality skincare range but without the supermodel, fancy packaging or hefty price tag. New Zealander Suzy Heazlewood is passionate about making skincare that gives real results. She works closely with an Australian scientist to make sure the formulations are high strength with top of the list active ingredients, molecularly structured to penetrate down through the layers where the degradation starts. The range encompasses topical peptides, topical vitamins and glycolics. Says Suzy, ‘Once you use medical grade skincare you never look back. The results truly do speak for themselves.’ It’s been another whirlwind year for Suzy as along with her core line of products, this year saw the launch of the Suzy H Mensline - ZY Him Skin
76
Nutrition with gorgeous Hollywood Actor and Producer Jason Simmons as Ambassador for the men’s line. Jason started out in the 90’s as Logan Fowler off Baywatch. He and Suzy connected through her son Jimmy and he loved the range and antibullying message so much that he happily agreed to be the face of the new mensline. Jason’s very good friend, the stunning Donna D’Errico, also an original Baywatch babe, was using and loving Suzy H as well so she became the American ambassador alongside Jason. Both are staunch animal rights campaigners and love the fact that Suzy H is proudly cruelty free. Along with that exciting news, Suzy has continued to focus on not only promoting her skincare line but also maintaining the Sistahood /Antibullying message - women/people celebrating one another as opposed to tearing each other down - so she is kept very
busy between NZ and Australia doing both. Suzy is also heavily involved in suicide prevention because of her own story and speaks at events promoting a positive message where she can. All proceeds of Suzy’s 100% certified organic coconut oil goes to helping those in need in our neighbourhood ... especially ‘Feeling Fab’ - a non profit organisation that Suzy is Ambassador for, helping women through grief. Giving back is a huge part of the Suzy H ethos. ‘I think it’s paramount’ says Suzy. ‘Everyone wins.’ Top sellers in the range include: • Matrixireline 6 (anti-ageing peptide technology) • Clinical strength Vitamin A • Exfoliating Glycolic Cleanser and • Snake Peptide Eye Cream ‘Helping you love who you see in the mirror' - Suzy H. ❁ SUZYH.COM

Reveal Your Inner Beauty with Forever Shine Skin & Beauty Therapy Beauty therapy is a global, billion dollar industry. Whether it’s simply a night cream or regular beauty treatment, we all subscribe to these methods in one way or another. However, it can be hard to distinguish which products and treatments are effective and which ones are ineffective or, in some cases, even harmful to our skin and body. At Forever Shine, the sincere trust is apparent as soon as you enter the door. Forever Shine is an award-winning beauty therapy clinic that takes a holistic approach to skincare and senses of their clients. This is achieved through natural and traditional skin care and medical ayurvedic treatments whilst constantly putting the safety and welling of customers first. A Skin and Beauty Specialist with over 20 years experience, Owner-Operator Ronita Sharma holds a range of International Qualifications and is a graduate from the Australian Association of Beauty Therapists, a registered member of the NZ Association of Beauty Therapy and a qualified Teacher and Trainer for Hito NZQA. However, it is her passion and care for her clients combined with Forever Shine’s holistic approach to beauty that has earned them accolades and success. Ronita strongly believes that true beauty comes from the inside. With this as Forever Shine’s guiding principle, Ronita and her team focus on how their clients feel about themselves. The results speak for themselves, with Ronita being the recipient of many awards for her dedication to the industry. This includes Best Businesswoman of the Year at the Indian Newslink Business Awards for 2014, 2015 and Best Business Award 2017. Indian Newslink is the oldest and most widely circulated Indian newspaper in New Zealand and these awards recognise and reward business successes across the country. Alongside these awards, Ronita and Forever Shine have received rave reviews in the media and from client testimonials. This is not just due to the wealth and experience
78
is an “Forever Shine g beauty award-winnin t takes a h t ic n li c y p a ther oach to a holistic appr nses of e s d n a e r a c in sk their clients.” Ronita brings but also the genuine love and care she has for her clients’ skin and wellbeing. “We want everyone to use our best services. We want to continue to look after more people and their beauty and skin needs and our goal is to help them feel more beautiful,” says Ronita. Ronita is also continually bringing in new and innovative treatments into Forever Shine. One of the latest treatments is their popular plant pigment eyebrow feathering and microblading. Using only natural plant pigmentation for the microblading, eyebrows are handcrafted and structured with detail and precision to create the ultimate brow and transformation. This unique technology gives you the privilege of having sparse brows delicately re-shaped. The procedure is safe, 100% cruelty-free, and derived from plant material that is made in Australia. Firstly, you come in for a consultation, an allergy test and your eyebrows are measured and drawn according to your face shape. Once the procedure is completed, you can walk
out with confidence and only come back for any follow-up appointments to touch up any fading. Another new treatment that uses natural products is Forever Shine’s natural lash growth oil which lengthens lashes in just six weeks as well as their semi-permanent makeup for lips and eyes. For those seeking anti-ageing treatments, Ronita and her team provide vaginal tightening along with a range of skin treatments such as Multipolar RF Skin Tightening, a chemicalfree treatment that removes fine lines and wrinkles. The RED phototherapy stimulates the production of collagen while slowing down the collagen breakdown. This provides firmness and suppleness and improves healing of damaged skin, leaving you with new, glowing skin. These treatments are offered alongside their popular staples such as waxing, laser hair removal, weight loss, pigmentation and mole treatments, to name a few. However, it is the genuine care, experience and trusted professional advice from Ronita and her team that has led to Forever Shine’s awards and accolades.
“We want everyone to use our best services. We want to continue to look after more people and their beauty and skin needs and our goal is to help them feel more beautiful.” Ronita helps bring out her clients’ inner beauty through trusted advice, treatments and products. Her extensive experience has helped countless men and women increase their self-confidence through visible results and personalised care. For Ronita and Forever Shine, this is the true measure of their success. ❁ FOREVERSHINEBEAUTY.COM

The Under Belly of the Beauty Industry Advertising is very persuasive. We are lead to believe that we can look like beautiful faces we see in posters, the flawless skin, beautifully made up eyes and plump seductive lips. All we need is an amazing skin treatment, which will leave our skin feeling hydrated, translucent and glowing. But what happens when it goes terribly wrong? One young lady thought she would spoil herself with a special treat and, as you can see, ended up with the opposite. According to registered beauty therapist Julie Martin, this is not an uncommon sight when you are at the coal face of the beauty industry. In this unregulated beauty industry anybody can call themselves a therapist, buy equipment and start treating the public without having any qualifications or recognised training credentials. As such, there are little or no consequences to the treatment provider if things go wrong. Even when complaints are laid with agencies, they go mostly unaddressed or with minimal to no ramifications to the offender and certainly no satisfaction for the complainant. To date we have had a suspected death from the contraction of Hepatitis B, damaged eyesight, severe scarring, burns, infections, lacerations, pigmentation damage and an unmeasurable amount of emotional trauma to the public, caused by these untrained or poorly trained individuals. Furthermore, many of these operators use old or inferior equipment and don’t understand the principles of what they are doing, delivering no results leaving the client financially disadvantaged. As we all know, if you go to a doctor they must be registered, if you go to a podiatrist they must be registered, if you are treated by a nurse they must be registered.
So, why is it that a beauty professional isn’t required to be registered? We are talking about serious procedures, including: laser hair removal, skin tightening and rejuvenating, collagen inducing treatments, pigmentation problems, HIFU-High intensity focused ultrasound, tattoo removal, have needles or probes put in your skin to destroy hair bulbs, induce skin trauma to stimulate collagen production, microdermabrasion to remove layers of skin, plasma jet (thermal skin tightening treatments), cosmetic tattooing and microblading to implant dyes into the skin. Even a simple treatment such as a nail manicure can go horribly wrong if you don’t know what you are doing. The truly scary part? You can do all the above with no qualifications at all. There is a severe lack of reporting and research on this serious public health issue. This is because victims don’t know who to complain to and when they do there is no satisfactory outcome, so people say nothing or take to informal ways of complaining such as social media. Where to from here? If we are to convince government agencies that we need mandatory registration that is managed by our industry organisation then we must prove that there is a need. We are calling on anyone who has experienced traumatic injury-based treatments or who have spent large amounts of money on treatments that haven’t worked to speak up and support our campaign. With your help, we can show the impact that this has on the wellbeing of New Zealanders and bring back confidence and legitimacy to our industry. ❁
So, why is it that a beauty professional isn’t required to be registered?

The Mighty Olive Many Auckland foodies and visitors alike, will be familiar with the highly renowned Bracu restaurant located on the Simunovich Olive Estate. But few may realise that the natural skincare range ‘Olive’ is also created and manufactured by the Simunovich family, inspired by an original recipe passed down from their family. With summer on our doorsteps, we thought we would share with you our top Olive skincare picks to freshen, hydrate and nourish your skin. We all know how vital it is to cleanse the skin thoroughly especially before bedtime so it can heal and restore

while sleeping. Removing makeup can sometimes irritate the skin but not Olive’s Gentle Cleansing Lotion. Designed for sensitive skin, it’s also the best choice for all skin types. Using the cleansing power of tangerine peel and antibacterial properties in rosemary, this gentle cleanser is tempered with marshmallow root to soothe and chamomile to calm plus the soft glide thanks to the sweet almond and grape seed oils. But it doesn’t matter how gentle a cleanser is, once the oil film has been removed from the skin, the ph level must be balanced so your skin doesn’t feel tight. This is often mistaken for dryness and a moisturiser won’t fix this, but the Olive Rose water Mist Toner will. The rose water has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with redness and tightness. This divine spray also contains melon extract which cools and soothes the skin and is rich in vitamin A and C, both a brilliant energy punch for the
skin. Now this toner is so light it can also be used as a pick-me-up spritz when travelling or on hot days. And last but not least the Olive Moisturising Day Cream. This tube of goodness contains olive leaf extract and oil giving the skin a mass dose of antioxidants that both protect and stimulate skin cells. Now this is actually their Olive Bio-complex which is plant based, NaTrue Certified natural and is made right there on the Estate from their Olive groves! Olives also have healing properties and assist with scarring. Combined with the apricot kernel oil and rosemary, this formula is lightweight to wear but leaves the skin conditioned and soft ALL day. Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Recent studies have shown that 96% of women want brighter, more even toned skin, resulting in an alarming topic developing in the medical cosmetic industry due to the rise in skin bleaching and skin lightening treatments, along with the illiteracy accompanied with the dangers of these procedures. Not only does misinformation result in unrealistic client expectations, but it also unlocks opportunities for illegal ingredient use which can have detrimental effects long-term. CAt the TheraVine™ laboratories, our cosmetic chemists understand the complex stages in the formation of pigmentation and set about finding the safest ingredients to combat hyperpigmentation as well as other factors involved in the melanogenesis process. The general public are not aware that Cosmetologists and Cosmetic Chemists are often best qualified to develop skin care products as that is their speciality, like the difference behind a food scientist and a chef. Even though the two have nutrition in common, it does not mean that the food scientist knows how to cook and prepare food nearly as well as the chef does. Our goal is to achieve the best skin brightening results possible without compromising the skin’s sensitivity. Committed to our promise of continuously developing highly advanced products, the MelanoVine™ range combines cutting- edge, technologically advanced active ingredients to combat and minimize hyperpigmentation, enhance radiance and even tone while reducing the signs of ageing through fighting free radical damage. ❁ THERAVINE.CO.NZ

“Skin Candy is the world’s most innovative take on an age-old method of hair removal, first used by Persians in 1900 AD.”
Scandinavia's best-kept beauty secret is now available for New Zealanders: Skin Candy Hair removal is not a new problem. There have been new treatments introduced over the last few years to make this easier for men and women from laser removal to slick shavers. However, very few are able to take the results of a luxury spa treatment and marry it with environmentally friendly ingredients. Scandinavian Skin Candy has managed to do both by creating an eye-catching, eco-conscious beauty product that New Zealanders are falling in love with! Skin Candy is the world’s most innovative take on an age-old method of hair removal, first used by Persians in 1900 AD. The difference? The team behind Skin Candy, based in Finland, have reformulated this ancient recipe, tweaking it where needed and ensuring all the kinks have been ironed out. The result is a professional product range that is effective, environmentally friendly and fun to use. Until very recently, Skin Candy was available exclusively in Europe. Now available in New Zealand, it is set to revolutionise hair removal.
92
Their signature candy pastes utilise Xylitol, a sugar alcohol, that transforms the pastes into an incredibly sticky substance, grabbing even short, stubborn hairs. It fights against bacteria with its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and is even anti-inflammatory. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, any post-treatment redness disappears from the skin much faster than from a traditional wax. Moreover, it is exceptionally moisturising! Skin Candy’s epilation method is very unique, it requires no heating, no strips and is great for the environment. It uses natural, biodegradable ingredients and increases the time between treatments. Aside from these amazing benefits, the treatment gives long-lasting results,
reduces ingrown hairs, requires no heat and leaves the skin exfoliated, moisturised and feeling super smooth. It takes the best of luxury spa treatments in an environmentally friendly way and bottles them up. Remove hair and care for your skin all at once. Scandinavian is a professional salon based product line distributed to around 80 stockists New Zealand wide. All training for the product is provided in Auckland and ongoing support is provided to all stockists. ❁ EEMIA.CO.NZ FACEBOOK.COM/SCANDINAVIANSKINCANDYNEWZEALAND INSTAGRAM.COM/SKINCANDYNZ

Discover the rejuvenating power of TriLipo Med Finesse Face and Body Clinic in Remuera has been a leader in cellulite treatments for 17 years. Owner and beauty specialist, Sue Crake, is delighted to introduce the latest breakthrough in cellulite reduction and face rejuvenating treatments.
BEFORE
AFTER 5 TREATMENTS
BENEFITS • Immediate visible results • Wrinkle reduction and skin tightening • Lifting, toning and firming • Minimisation of acne scares • Overall skin / complexion improvement COSTS • Face and neck treatment (combined ) $320 • Face or neck $225 • Body treatments $250 per body area • (Quote on consultation package prices available)
“The treatment eliminates fat from the body, contouring the treated area as well as toning the muscle.”
How does TriLipo Med work? The TriLipo Med has 3 different heads, used to rejuvenate the face and neck, as well as tighten upper arms, and reduce cellulite on thighs, hips, buttocks and body. The TriLipo Med targets fat cells with radiofrequency energy, which penetrates the epidermis and dermis of the skin, heating it to 40 – 42 degrees Celsius. In the body treatment, the heat generated is strong enough to cause thermal damage to the surrounding fat tissue and connective tissue, thus “bursting” the fat cells and releasing liquid fat into the circulation. It also treats cellulite by breaking down the deeper subcutaneous fat within connective tissue. “TriLipo Med is very exciting as it’s the only device with dynamic muscle activation. This causes the muscles to contract, which pushes and massages the released fat into the lymphatic system,” explains Sue. “The treatment eliminates fat from the body, contouring the treated area as well as toning the muscle.” The treatment also activates fibroblasts to produce more collagen, which in turn tightens and smooths the skin, giving a younger appearance. This effect continues to treat skin even after the treatment is finished. The skin resurfacing application also helps treat acne scarring, stretch marks and pigmentation, resulting in a more even skin tone. It will help with loose skin following pregnancy or weight loss, and improve the appearance of cellulite. Unlike other body contouring devices, TriLipo med requires no exercise immediately after the treatment, but a healthy diet and regular exercise will help maintain treatment results. The TriLipo treatment is outstanding for rejuvenating the face, neck and jowls – and is especially effective for tightening the muscles around the entire neck (from behind each ear) and improving the contour of the jaw, while generally toning and lifting the face. What to expect? • Treatment is fast – around 20-30 minutes per area. • You will experience some heat and redness, but treatment is not painful. • Some results and smoothing are visible immediately after the first treatment. • On average 4-8 treatments are required per area. • Maintenance treatments – 1 per area every 3 months recommended. ❁ 09 520 5331 FINESSEFACEANDBODY.CO.NZ

“... whether its stress, pregnancy, acne or aging, the team at Beau Visage can massage, treat, wax and zap you back to fabulous fresh healthy skin.”
Stop the Aging Protein! All women feel they are in a race against time. One wrinkle appears then there’s suddenly hundreds. What if we told you there is an aging protein called Progerin and BEAU VISAGE SPA can assist you to slow down this protein! Beau Visage Beauty Spa on Dominion Road are proud stockists of Cell Reverse skincare products and are having incredible results with their product C-stem. C-stem has an ‘A-list’ ingredients label but two stand outs that you will really benefit from and might not have heard of before are Lilac stem cells and a particular algae extract that is a gene modulator. Lilac stem cells have a three-pronged approach; they have anti inflammatory properties that assist with rosacea and redness of the skin (a very common problem for New Zealanders,) they control breakouts which is amazing if you have acne prone skin or tend to break out in the hotter months and they also help to decrease pigmentation, another big issue for Kiwi skin. The algae extract is the little genius that helps create an environment where the aging protein Progerin can’t flourish, thereby slowing the production down. Together, these two are a powerful force for your skin to bring back your outer glow.
98
Beau visage has achieved sustained results with Cell Reverse skin care, from natural vegan skin care to medical grade peels and home care and has made Beau Visage, a destination for non-surgical, non-expensive procedures. REINVENT YOUR SKIN COLLAGEN PEPTIDES: NATURE’S OWN BOTOX Recent hype around collagen could likely lead you to believe it is a buzzword used to gather attention. But in truth, collagen possesses a myriad of benefits which can help turn back the clock. Not only is it the most abundant protein in the human body, making up ninety percent of our ligaments and thirty-five percent of our bones, but collagen is also the building block of our skin’s elasticity and firmness. Studies show that natural collagen production declines with age, decreasing by two percent every year from the age of twenty-five. The decline is accelerated further by sun damage, toxins, poor diet and environmental stressors, therefore adequate levels of collagen are needed in order to maintain optimal skin integrity.
“WHEN I WENT IN FOR MY ROUTINE HAIR EXTENSIONS AND THEY WERE ALL REMOVED, MY HAIRDRESSER WAS AMAZED AT HOW MUCH MY NATURAL HAIR HAD GROWN AND IT WAS ACTUALLY THICKER. I WAS HOOKED!”
The term ‘peptides’ refers to a chain of amino acids. Collagen is made up of a selection of these amino acids, including glycine, proline and arginine. Although easily accessible in countries such as Japan and China, collagen peptides have only recently made its way into the hands of customers across the world. One company ensuring collagen peptides are readily accessible to a larger audience is Vida Glow, an Australian business founded by Anna Lahey in 2014.
Anna unexpectedly discovered the healing benefits of collagen whilst on holiday in Japan. She became fascinated by its widespread accessibility after noticing collagen was purchasable at local supermarkets and gyms and could be infused into a variety of meals and drinks.
100
“We are known as a collagen brand and inspired by our success in the ingestible collagen realm, we thought it was necessary to keep collagen as our point of difference when it came to formulating this skincare range.” Vida Glow Cosmetics is enriched with marine collagen derived from the seaweed variety of red algae. The chemicalfree hydrolysation process of the red algae means it has a low molecular weight and is fine enough (below 1000 daltons) to penetrate through the epidermis into the dermis, the deepest layer of the skin. Here, it activates collagen production and helps the skin’s natural regeneration process, repairing damaged cells and stimulates the production of new cells.
“I LOVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS, I HAVE AN INTENSE INTEREST IN THEM. THIS PASSION STEMS FROM WATCHING MY MUM GET READY AS A LITTLE GIRL.”
Anna had only ever associated collagen with injectables, so she quizzed a local pharmacist about it’s supposed benefits and learnt that women have been using it for over three hundred years, claiming it as their secret to flawless skin and long life expectancy. The pharmacist convinced her to try out this ‘miracle ingredient’ and within a few weeks of consuming collagen daily, Anna began experiencing noteworthy results. “My lifestyle habits hadn’t changed and within four weeks I had noticed an improvement in my skin, it had cleared, felt significantly more hydrated and my complexion looked plumped,” she says. Vida Glow launched their marine collagen peptide powder in Australia and internationally from day one. They rapidly gained a following of loyal customers whose testimonials proved similar to Anna’s and confirmed that marine collagen had the power to dramatically improve the appearance of hair, skin and nails. Inspired by their success in the ingestible collagen realm and in line with their vision to offer a more holistic approach to health and wellness, Vida Glow launched a collagen skincare range in October. Vida Glow Cosmetics, an idea spearheaded by Anna, means Vida Glow now offers a widerange of products which go beyond a one- dimensional approach to beauty and wellness.
Anna, a self-confessed product junkie, has been involved in the production of Vida Glow Cosmetics every step of the way. “I love beauty products, I have an intense interest in them. This passion stems from watching my mum get ready as a little girl.” “Ensuring that these products were the best they could be, and better than what I had been using was so important to me.”

Brand Value: Leading The Way In Making Beauty Green The beauty industry is one of the fastest growing, revenue-producing industries in the world. As we know, this industry is extremely competitive, and for a brand to simply state ‘contains natural ingredients’ just does not cut it anymore. Products need to go that one step further and Phâro Sugaring is one such brand, created by Bernadette Soares, founder of Brand Value Ltd. The Phâro brand has revolutionised the hair removal industry and is already making mainstream waxing a thing of the past. Chemical based waxes are essentially plastic. Once used, strips and spatulas with wax on them, wax pots and empty cartridges end up in a landfill and can take 300 to 500 years to biodegrade. Some plastics never break down. The chemicals used in the solvents used to remove wax leach into the waterways and soil, adding to the devastating levels of pollution. It’s official, using traditional chemical-based wax is out Phâro Sugaring Gels are made with ethically and responsibly sourced natural ingredients including sugar, aloe vera, kiwi fruit, lemon juice and Manuka honey. They have even developed an organic (vegan-friendly) gel for salons that want to take it that one step further, with organic rose water and organic sugar. They contain absolutely no solvents or chemicals, and unlike waxes, they do not require any chemicals to clean up, but simply wash off in water Brand Value is committed to research, development and sustainable manufacturing practices. Over the last five years, the company has, through radical manufacturing innovation, reduced the energy requirements of its manufacturing of the Phâro sugaring gels by over 300%. Furthermore, there is almost zero discharge into the atmosphere or the wastewater system in the manufacturing process, and wash-down of the plant and machinery is chemical-free and done with hot water.
102
“...businesses are sending a strong message to their clients. A message of ecoconscious, planet-friendly, truly green beauty.” The fibres of their unique hydroentangled strips are ‘glued’ together by water technology rather than glue, making them much more biodegradable than regular wax strips. The plastic spatulas and roller heads are used once per application, they are then washed, sterilised and reused, cutting down considerably on the number of spatulas that are thrown out after every other regular waxing treatment. The pots and cartridges are recyclable, so they can go in with your regular recycling, however, you may also return them to the company, where they are washed, recycled and re-filled, and those who do this are refunded 5c for each cartridge and 10c for each pot returned. If you consider the manufacturing processes of making chemical based waxes, the endless list of negative side effects of using chemicals on the skin, and the detrimental effect that discarding plastic and chemicals into our environment causes, you will understand clearly why choosing a brand that adheres to and honours these fundamental principles, is not an alternative anymore; it is a must. “If you think about your beauty business as ethical, one of the main things you have a choice over is where you spend your money - “what are you supporting when you buy?” asks Brand Value Founder and Director Bernadette Soares. By deciding to ethically spend your money by supporting a truly eco-friendly supplier with a huge positive impact on the environment, businesses are sending a strong message to their clients. A message of eco-conscious, planet-friendly, truly green beauty. ❁ BRANDVALUE.CO.NZ

Thinking of inking, choose Otautahi. Otautahi Tattoo studios began making their mark on the tattooing scene back in 2008, when Brad Cone took his vision to open his own artistic tattoo studio and turned it into a reality. Otautahi gets its name from the Maori word for Christchurch, the birthplace of the first studio. Ten years on, Cone still owns the Christchurch studio, but his vision has grown to include two new locations in Auckland and Queenstown, run by Sam Alpe and Jeremy Hill, respectively. Otautahi’s presence in Auckland, the cultural and commercial capital, has meant that they’ve acquired some key artists to push their artististry to new levels. Garnering a reputation as being among New Zealand’s premier tattoo studios, Otautahi have become known for both their professional and personal approach. Their highly skilled artists understand the importance of the whole tattoo experience, not just the end result. They enjoy working with you to turn an idea into a unique design that expresses a part of your identity, whether it’s a full or half sleeve, or something
“To get a tattoo at Otautahi is to get a real taste of New Zealand culture...a tattoo from here is a souvenir that you can carry with you for the rest of your life.” small that’s subtle and personal. Choose from a range of different specialties, from Maori and Polynesian styles, Japanese Irezumi, Chinese styles and more. To get a tattoo at Otautahi is to get a real taste of New Zealand culture. Not only is it an authentic Kiwi environment with local Kiwis, a tattoo from here is a souvenir that you can carry with you for the rest of your life. In particular, traditional Maori tattoo is a way to express your belonging to New Zealand culture and appreciation of its indigenous art forms. Whether it’s an international pop star like Justin Beiber, sports heroes like the All Blacks or someone like you, at Otautahi they treat everyone with the same respect and attention. New In Town! Mount Eden & Mount Maunganui leading the way with Flawless Brows. For Emma Grundy, founder and owner of Flawless Brows, cosmetic tattoo artistry has always been a very strong passion. She puts it down partly to an obsession with perfection, feeling that cosmetic tattooing satisfies her OCD artist’s ego. Mainly, she does it for the love of it. Emma thoroughly enjoys being able to give people their dream brows and lips, as well as seeing their confidence grow as a result. “I also love the fact that I can give ladies eyebrows that they have lost due to aging or cancer...it is very rewarding.” Cosmetic tattooing is a semi permanent enhancement made to the face. Pigments that can be metabolized by the body are used instead of traditional tattoo ink. Flawless Brows provides a range of treatments, including cosmetic tattoo feather stroke brows or combination brows, cosmetic tattoo lip liner and blending, and full lip tattooing. 110
“Great brows don’t happen by chance, they happen by appointment.” Emma takes great pride in being able to provide the highest quality cosmetic tattoo. Having trained at Melbourne College of Cosmetic Tattoo, she has now graced our shores with her talent, occasionally travelling back to Australia to further advance her training. Her dream of establishing and owning her own business was realised when she recently opened LASH + BROW in central Auckland, which Flawless Brows works out of. The chic beauty hub has already garnered a steady stream of faithful clientele who have been wowed by their results. The testimonials are abundant, but Lucy is one of many happy clients, saying, ‘Love my new and improved brows and the time and effort you took to get them perfect. Painless and such professional service. Definitely recommend…’
In particular, the feather touch technique, or ‘feathering’ has become a hugely popular beauty trend. People from the age of 18 to 80 are lining up to get their feather brows. Why is it so popular? It ensures perfect and natural looking brows without the need for makeup. Plenty of people are unhappy with their brow shape, brow colour or lack of. Feathering can make sparse brows full, patchy brows even, or completely change the shape of the brow. As fashion moves away from more heavily made up looks to ones that are more organic, people are following suit with their brows. Emma uses a feather touch tattoo tool to achieve featherlight, hairlike strokes that mimic the client’s own brow hair. The end result enhances while maintaining a very natural feel. For a more defined look, a combination brow is the way to go. This is a mix between feathering and shading. Slightly sharper than the feather stroke, but not as bold as the full powder brow, it has a more natural look at the front of the brow and then gradually becomes more defined at the ends, mimicking makeup. Another treatment offered by Flawless Brows is the lip liner and blend, or the full lip tattoo, which Emma believes will likely be the next hot trend. Forget lipstick - cosmetic lip tattoos won’t come off on your wine glass or when you take off your makeup. The lip liner and blend technique outlines your lips with colour and blends towards the centre of your lips for an authentic look. For something bolder, the full lip tattoo colours the entire lip with your chosen shade. Emma will help you choose a complimentary colour from natural nudes and rosy pinks right through to deep reds and violets, depending on your tastes. Lip tattoos can be applied to your
existing shape, or for people who are after a fuller looking lip, the tattoo can be extended past your lip line to create a more generous lip, or to correct asymmetry. Depending on how well your skin retains the tattoo pigment, cosmetic tattoos typically last 1-2 years. The lips tend to hold the colour for longer and last between 2 and 5 years. A common question asked by clients is ‘does cosmetic tattooing hurt?’, and the answer is, no, not really. The procedure is typically described by clients as a ‘scratchy feeling’. Topical anaesthetic is applied throughout the procedure to minimise any pain or discomfort. In the words of Emma, “Great brows don’t happen by chance, they happen by appointment.” ❁ NOTE: FLAWLESS BROWS IS EXPANDING AND IS NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR MOUNT MAUNGANUI AS WELL AS AUCKLAND. When to call it quits... with your makeup! Mascara becoming flaky and dry, lipstick not applying as well, eyeliner not staying on...it's time to say good bye to the old and hello to the new! A few tips to remember when debating throwing out your favourite products and why you should. LIPSTICK Lipstick can usually hold their colour and texture for a year or more, but after a year you should look at throwing away your favourite piece as it may not be applying as good as it once did or might be crumbly and breaking. To stop the risk of irritation and infection, out with the old in the with the new! FOUNDATION Depending on brands, foundations typically last for up to 24 months from the date they are opened. Some ingredients in foundation can separate and increase the risk of germ growth because the preservatives are no longer effective. So to keep your odds from having a reaction or skin irritation don't use foundations past their expiry date. EYE SHADOW Lucky for this, eye shadow's can last around two years, normally all that happens upon expiry date is that it will be harder and the application won't be as smooth. However; because eye shadow is so close to your eye it's always mindful to pay attention for warning signs on when to stop using them as you don't want to cause any infections so always be mindful around your eyes. â?
Rule of thumb: When in doubt, throw it out!

Olga’s Tips for Applying Makeup If your skin feels dry, invest in a hydrating primer. MAC Prep + Prime face protect SPF 50 will give your face an even look and keep the makeup on for much longer than usual. It gives a glow to the skin and makes the face feel soft and smooth. The SPF factor is 50-which is very important for New Zealand. If you want to achieve a lovely, glowing complexion mix a bit of sheer liquid highlighter with your foundation - it will leave a natural, subtle glow. When dealing with dark circles under your eyes, apply concealer only to the affected area, never cover the whole under eye area - as it may age you. The perfect product to use is La Prairie Light Fantastic Cellular Concealing Brightening Eye Treatment - it is a remarkable combination of treatment foundation & concealer which also reduces appearance of lines and wrinkles.
“Take good care of your skin with cleansing and moisturising twice a day and sunblock every day!” Nikki Milina
Eyebrows are your most important facial feature, but if you are not blessed with a set of Cara Delevingne’s brows, use short, feathery strokes with a thin makeup brush to fill in the gaps and give your brows a natural lush look. I love 24-hour super brow long-wear pomade by Kat von D Beauty - it is waterproof and delivers bold brows with a high-impact, budgeproof look. It also comes in every imaginary shade. To reveal the beauty of your lips and to add more volume, use a slightly lighter lipstick or a bit of a gloss on the centre of your upper and lower lips. ❁

“Our gut is actually like a second brain and high amounts of refined carbs and sugar kill the good bacteria in our gut, creating health issues, the most dangerous being diabetes and depression.”
The Cold Carb Facts! Ok, so every magazine and health guru tell us to cut back on the carbs. But is it really a must? Do they really do as much damage as they say? According to celebrity chef Simon Gault, it can be the difference between life or death, well that was the case with him! Simon’s mother expressed dire concern as Simon’s weight was at an all time high, and with diabetes in the family her concerns were justified. Finally, he agreed to see a doctor and they put him on medication and told him he needed to lose weight. He kept taking the pills and would get around to the weight loss at some point. After swapping his doctor, who was a high school friend, he was finally told the brutal truth. At his current weight, he would not be able to fly and as a pilot, this was crushing. His friend also
136
told him that if he didn’t lose weight immediately he could risk going blind, lose a limb or be on dialysis for life. This was the wake-up call he needed. Reaching out for help, he googled centres that could help and he connected with a UK outfit who agreed to take him on. Taking a never-donebefore 8 weeks off, he embarked on a raw food, juice and fitness regime. Not only did it reset his cravings and assist him in losing a lot of weight, but it also propelled him to want to help others and understand ‘how we eat’. This sparked the well coveted TV series Gault produced “Why are we fat?” – this was the second most watched series on Qantas, after David Attenborough, and was picked up by BBC Asia and Amazon. It also led to Gault partnering with Recal to educate Kiwis to try to turn our horrifying statistics around. The stats I’m speaking of are jawdropping. We are officially the 2nd fattest country in the World and we have the 2nd fattest kids in the World with now 1 in 3 being diagnosed with diabetes!
“Our diet and lunchboxes need to change, our understanding of food and our gut needs to change,” says Simon. “Our gut is actually like a second brain and high amounts of refined carbs and sugar kills the good bacteria in our gut, creating health issues, the most dangerous being diabetes and depression.” Recal is a science-based programme, that follows Mediterranean-style eating, with structured fasting, to re-set your gutbrain and re-programme your cravings, plus learn how your body utilises and burns food. “Recal is the future,” says Gault. “Diet needs to be the directive at the top of the hill and not have medicine or an ambulance at the bottom of the hill.” If you want to learn more or feel your health is in danger, reach out to Simon and Recal. Heart-felt message from Mrs New Zealand Mrs New Zealand 2017 Daena Colebrook, knows first-hand that heart disease can affect anyone, no matter how old they are, or what their life circumstances might be. The Auckland early childhood teacher and pageant queen’s brother, Dylan Carter, was born with a hole in his heart. “We were lucky, when he was born he did get operated on and had open-heart surgery, over time he has had to have follow-up visits to monitor it. “He’s now a thriving 22-year-old.” Daena Colebrook and her brother Dylan Carter volunteered as street collectors for the Heart Foundation’s 2018 Big Heart Appeal. Having the Heart Foundation provide support and information helped her family cope, she says. “I’m a mother of two and heart conditions run in the family, so that’s something that’s really important. To have funding for ongoing research to ensure that there is help if anything were to happen.” As an early childhood teacher, Colebrook has seen another young boy born with a hole in his heart, who has gone through numerous open-heart surgeries. “Seeing it from that point of view and knowing what the Heart Foundation does with funding including research, helping to support families like my own growing up, is really important. “Seeing what that directly goes to is really magical,” she says. Colebrook and her brother supported the Heart Foundation in its mission to stop all people in New Zealand dying prematurely from heart disease and enabling those with heart disease to live full lives, by volunteering for the organisation’s Big Heart Appeal in February 2018.

Heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer, responsible for the deaths of more than 6,000 mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers every year. There are also currently 186,000 people living with heart disease. The Heart Foundation has invested more than $70 million in cutting-edge research and specialist training for New Zealand cardiologists since it began in 1968, thanks to the generous support of people in New Zealand. ❁ For more information on the Heart Foundation visit HEARTFOUNDATION.ORG.NZ

What do you know about Coeliac Disease? We were very privileged that this lovely lady, Kim Kennedy who has Coeliac Disease agreed to be interviewed. This disease is real and we all need to raise our awareness and become more accepting and understanding of it as we will inevitably come across people with this affliction, if not in our own families. Kim was happy to answer all of our questions, so grab a coffee, sit back and learn from her in this interesting interview about her Coeliac experiences. As you will see the main issue is food and the body’s reaction to it. This article may also be reassuring to others who have just discovered they need to walk this path and that they’re not alone. Kim when did you find out you had to eat Gluten Free and had coeliac disease? I didn’t find out I had Coeliac disease until I was 21. As a child I always had very intense stomach pains to the point of tears. My doctors always put it down to stomach migraines. I always knew something was wrong with me but I was always brushed off as wanting attention. I was tired all the time and would sleep for 10+ hours at a time and wake up exhausted. It got a lot worse around 18. The Stomach pain got to a stage where I was doing my Admin work while sitting on the floor of the office, so I could crunch over and relieve the pain a little. Because of the damage to the villi in my intestines I couldn’t absorb painkillers orally and I ended up in hospital several times on intravenous pain meds. It wasn’t until I insisted my doctor test me for cancer that I was taken seriously and tested for coeliac disease. How extreme was your diet change/plan? Very extreme. I’ve always loved Carbs especially fresh soft white bread. Going Gluten Free was one of the hardest challenges in my life. Your thinking needs to flip 180. There were a lot of times I would be crying and just eating GF toast (that tasted like cardboard) for dinner because it all seemed too hard. Is there anything you miss eating the most? Nothing specific. I just miss being able to eat what I feel like at the time. I can no longer just go through a drive through or stop at a café. Everything takes careful planning
146
What is it like when you dine out at a restaurant? Terrifying and belittling. I have to constantly ask and reask to ensure what I am getting is safe to eat. Even when I am assured that what I am eating is GF, its still like playing Russian Roulette. There is not enough education around Coeliac Disease. I get really anxious if it is suggested to me to eat somewhere I haven’t been before as I am trusting strangers with my health. The sheer amount of times I hear ‘yes its cooked in the same fryer but the heat kills the gluten’ or ‘a little bit won’t hurt you, stop being dramatic’ is incredible! Cross contamination is the greatest problem. The food may be Gluten Free, but the minute you stick a knife into a slab of butter and butter a piece of normal bread, then put the knife back into the butter there will be crumbs left. Boards that aren’t cleaned correctly can still have bread or Gluten products on them. It only takes a Crumb to set off the autoimmune response of Coeliac disease – Restaurant Kitchens are very busy places and if they do not use baking paper or a separate area and utensils, the risks to us are huge. What would a normal day of eating look like for you? I don’t usually eat much during the day. Usually an Isagenix shake for breakfast and lunch and quick snacks throughout the day such as Cheese and Rice Crackers, Hummus, and Fruit with a proper meal for dinner. Dinner is always awesome as my house is fully gluten free. It’s amazing what meals you can replicate if you do enough research. Oh and lots and lots of coffee!
What is the worse experience you have had with this disease? After I had just been diagnosed, maybe 6 months after. I was accidentally glutened by a family member. I managed to get myself home but ended up curled up in a ball screaming in pain in the middle of my kitchen. My flat mates had to call my mum to take me to the hospital where I had to stay for 3 days in pain while they ran tests. The pain relief they gave barely took the edge off. Unfortunately getting glutened by family and friends happens quite frequently. They try so hard, but seriously if you haven’t made the food yourself you are playing Russian Roulette every single time. Do you find that NZers are educated on Coeliacs and understand the disease? Some yes but the majority no. A lot of the time when I ask if a product is gluten free I get a reply along the lines of ‘Why? Is it because you need to go on a diet?’ or ‘that’s not good for you! You should just cut sugar if you want to lose weight.’ It’s very difficult to change the mindset that this is not a diet and it’s not a choice. The funny thing is that most processed Gluten Free foods have a higher calorie content than their equivalent! So anyone trying to use GF to lose weight is fooling themselves. Comments from family and friends if a new restaurant or café is suggested along the lines of ‘you can always have a salad’. Funny thing is that the salad is not necessarily safe either, depending on dressings and dropped croutons/noodles. The ‘sighs’ when you mention you can’t eat somewhere. This disease has such a huge impact on Social interactions. Eating and drinking are such a huge part of our culture, but I avoid going out because of the risks. What would you like to suggest to help awareness in dining out? Proper training. There is a lot of training around nut allergies but not a lot around Coeliac Disease. Possibly a ½ day or full day training course for restaurants and cafes to attend. Any formal courses or qualifications should be covering this as well. Some Coeliacs have an instant reaction to Gluten, which can be quite dramatic. My reaction time is 10-20 minutes, but because of the nausea and fainting, I am
“Educate others around you and surround yourself with people who care.” at serious risk if I happen to be driving or involved in another activity that requires my full attention. On the other hand my Mother’s reaction time is approx. 6 hours. Both of our reactions last 3-7 days and have a serious impact on our day to day living, not to mention the internal damage being done. Do you feel you are judged for having Coeliacs? Every day of my life. It took until the above incident where I had to go to hospital for my friends to understand and take it seriously. I still get responses from some family saying there’s no point trying because you’ll always get poisoned. It’s really difficult especially when meeting new people and having to explain myself and defend what they see as a choice. I am lucky to be surrounded by some amazing family and friends who are understanding and make life that little bit easier. Number one tip for other Coeliacs? It gets better. At the beginning it seems as if life will always be difficult, and that there is no point, but it will get easier. You will learn to read labels properly, you will learn the correct words to use when eating out, you will learn not to hide your reactions from people and it will make you stronger. Educate others around you and surround yourself with people who care. Life will get better. Join Coeliac NZ. They have amazing resources. There is also an App called ‘Find Me GF’ which works in NZ and most countries all over the world. And a couple in Pukekohe: GFME (gfme.co.nz) who do amazing courses on making bread, and other GF baking. So if you have Coeliac disease or gut issues so you need to eat Gluten Free, you will I’m sure have been able to identify with a lot of these issues Kim has shared. Or even to have learnt a few new things. If you know very little about Coeliac Disease I hope we have made you more aware as public awareness is what Coeliacs and Coeliac NZ are striving for. ❁ FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE GO TO COELIAC.ORG.NZ.

To love oneself:
To show your body, your mind and your soul, the love and respect it deserves. Life is hard. Relationships are hard and the world spins at a pace that keeps us out of breath. Take ten minutes a day, to give back to yourself. Drink water to hydrate your leaves, eat from every source to nourish the branches. Breathe to oxygenate the veins and rest to rejuvenate the colour and lustre of your flowers. You are extraordinary. You are talented and beautiful. Your smile lights up a room and your imagination lights up the World. You are loved, you are valued, you are precious and you have a purpose on this Earth. Be all you can be, show others how to be kind by showing kindness, patience and empathy. Move to stay vital, laugh to stay sane, cry to let it go and love yourself because you deserve it.
