SHE SAID YES The Little White Book $69.00

Spring is here, and the racing world kicks off the season with the Melbourne Cup Day on the 1st of November. We will be heading to the VIP Melbourne Cup with the Stamford Plaza Auckland and look forward to putting on our most fabulous hats and outfits. An incredible $21,000 worth of prizes is on offer for the best-dressed man, woman, and hat! Melbourne Cup Day is one of Australia’s most prestigious thoroughbred horse races. It is a 3,200-metre race for three-year-olds and over and it is the richest “two-mile” handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. Celebrities from all over the world flock to Melbourne for this great race day. In New Zealand, we fully support a day away from work to dress up and celebrate with Melbourne. See our race day pages 57 to 65 for all our tips. Spring is also the season when brides turn into wives with our best venues booked up for the start of the wedding season. Planning for my own wedding in 2017, I recently found a fabulous company to laser cut invites. Carla Hunt is a boutique operation that designs some of the most beautiful invites I have seen. lavishlaserdesign.com If you are planning a wedding, shesaidyes.co.nz is a great place to start. Go on and buy the “Little White Book” to keep track of all your bits and pieces. It’s a beautiful book that can be passed on to friends or family members. And one of my most exciting finds is Winefriend www.winefriend.co.nz a company that helps you work out what you really like and delivers it to your door. We recently launched Chinese EYE Magazine, a luxury, glossy magazine in Mandarin for the Chinese audience in New Zealand. Go to ISSUU Chinese EYE for a sneak peek https://issuu.com/ magazinepublishers/docs/chieye_spring_ebook Over the year, when out shopping, I always keep an eye out for great Christmas presents so the Christmas shopping season is not a mad rush. See some of our Christmas ideas on page 18 to 19 to help you with your shopping list. Enjoy the countdown to Christmas!

The end of July saw the opening of David Jones Wellington, the department store's first international store. This stunning flagship store occupies a heritage listed building that has undergone an AUD$20+ million refurbishment and operates over three floors offering more than 500 brands across fashion, beauty, accessories and home and a premium café offering breakfast and lunch, providing the perfect place for customers to meet a friend for lunch or take a break whilst shopping.

Newmarket’s Glamour Boutique is excited to announce the launch of The Style Space - a high-end, in-store styling service that offers makeup, a closed door shopping experience or special event styling. Glamour Boutique is known for it’s unique in-store experience, even receiving the coveted People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Newmarket Business Awards. As such, it’s no surprise that Owner and Director Charone Mackessack wanted to find a way to take that extra step for their clients. “It was a very natural progression from specialising in event wear,” explains Charone. “We wanted to be able to offer our clients the next step to having a perfect night out - no matter what the occasion.” The Style Space launched in July and is already proving popular. glamourboutique.co.nz

The original version of Loved Me A Man was released during the Worlds AIDS Epidemic which saw countless men take their own lives rather than suffer through the isolating illness in an un accepting society. Mika lost dozens of friends and colleagues, several of whom died by suicide, some because they couldn’t come out to their loved ones let alone face society’s stigma around the virus. Loved Me A Man will be officially released on World Suicide Prevention Day September 10th, and is the first single from Mika’s The Originals Collection which is due later in 2016.

Celebrating

A LIFE WELL LIVED AND ALL ITS ADORNMENTS BY AMELIA HAYSOM

28

S

ome things just get better with age, and Karen Walker’s latest jewellery campaign, Magic Hands, is a testament to that; its two vivacious models aged 78 and 93 exude a level of confident elegance that only time can teach. The colouful campaign celebrates the idea of a life well lived – and all its adornments. Set alongside glimpses of sumptuous tapestries, silks and various animal prints, perfectly manicured nails and dazzling jewels are beautifully juxtaposed with aged hands that speak of the rich, creative lives their owners have lead. “Hands can be every bit as expressive as faces,” says Karen, perhaps in a nod to the sublime eyewear campaign she shot with photographer Ari Seth Cohen back in 2013. (You may remember, they used a 91-year-old model and blew up the internet.) LA-based Seth Cohen - well known for capturing sartorially savvy seniors and commemorating them on his blog, Advanced Style – is also the genius behind the lens for Magic Hands. “It has always been a joy to work with Karen,” he says. “Right from the start we’ve had this shared sensibility that just makes us click.” This time around, the photographer picked two seasoned dames from his own back yard to be his mannequins. California-based Phyllis Sues; pianist, fashion designer and former star of the Ballets Russes also happens to be just seven years away from celebrating a century on earth, while 78-yearold great-grandmother, stylist and infamous party girl Roberta Haze used to dance on Broadway in the 60s.

“They absolutely have their own stories to tell,” says Karen, of these ladies and their beautifully lived-in hands. And tell a story they did; Phyllis and Roberta were given free reign on the jewellery styling, where they each pieced together their own unique looks for the shoot. On each hand features a compilation of Karen’s signature arrow and filigree classics, mixed in with newly released pieces in gold, silver and rose gold; some of them embellished with enamel, quartz and diamonds – all of them fit for gifting to a special someone (who may or may not be yourself). Karen Walker is renowned for her collaborative approach to her work, having joined forces with some of the most inspiring minds and companies across the world. Producing everything from ad campaigns to covetable accessories, Karen has worked with the likes of Beau Coops, Anthropologie and even Sephora to create limited edition items that often sell out at cult-status speed. Magic Hands, in collaboration with Seth Cohen, is already receiving global praise thanks to its refreshing creative, which heroes these remarkable women as much as it does Karen’s iconic jewellery. In a world that’s perhaps a little too infatuated with the idea of eternal youth, it’s a welcome reminder that beauty and aging are not mutually exclusive – and that women of all ages should be as treasured as the jewels they choose to wear. Karen Walker Jewellery is available in Karen Walker stores, karenwalker.com and in selected fine jewellers, fashion boutiques and department stores.

TOUS’ revival of a timeless classic; Mesh

WHAT WAS ONCE DEEMED A CRAZY IDEA IN THE 90S, HAS RESULTED IN BEING A REVOLUTIONARY COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL AND NOVEL DESIGNS.

T

OUS is proud to re-introduce Mesh in it’s original form, alongside its introduction of the collection’s latest adaptations. TOUS has added to the classic tones of silver, steel and gold pieces, new versions in rose pink, brown and black. Featuring a perfect combination of steel with its industrial look and the warmth and tenderness of TOUS’ renowned little bear in soft gold and with the most luxurious versions of the collection including time-honoured TOUS motifs in diamond pavé or oversized silhouettes, the choices are endless. Mesh, the romantic, yet daring collection was revolutionised in the nineties due to its statement in design and avant-garde mix of materials. It’s a combination of TOUS’ traditional motifs with steel mesh in a single piece, comprised of fine filaments to allow for

30

lightness and flexibility. Resulting in a collection that embodied the synthesis of innovative and unusual ideas, differing to the traditional jewelry of that time; Mesh is elegant yet daring and brave. To wear TOUS is not to blend in, but to challenge the average perspective of accessible luxury and fashion jewelry pieces that will become an icon of the future. As the gorgeous Rosa Oriol says: “An icon only becomes an icon when the public acknowledges and embraces it as such...”

PUT YOUR best FOOT FORWARD

AS THEY LAUNCH THEIR NEW SEASON OF LUXURY FOOTWEAR, THE FRANCIA UYS DEISGNERS REFLECT ON HOW FAR THEY HAVE COME.

40

W

ith precisely 55 pairs of shoes made in each style, Francia UYS footwear is the epitome of exclusive. It is no surprise then, that designers Francia Tolson and Rebecca Trembath share an ambition for shoes that lead the fashion pack. But behind the shine of their latest collection is an endearing friendship and a whole lot of hard work. Francia and Rebecca first met at intermediate school in Howick. Both being new to the eastern suburb they supported each other. Practicing for hours in their family lounges they were determined to be the next Spice Girls. “We dreamed big and we had so much passion for what we thought we could do in life. However, there was just one small issue, neither of us could really sing!” says Francia. The pair drifted apart after high school. Rebecca began a hairdresser apprenticeship and Francia started working for a freight company as an office junior. But the bond was still there. “Never forgetting or missing a birthday, a special occasion or lending a shoulder to cry on.” When Rebecca moved to Australia in her early 20s, the duo remained close friends but lived their separate lives. Fast forward a few more years and both were married with children. Rebecca’s three children, Nevaeh, 6, Romeo, 2, and Halo, 1, are growing fast. Francia’s two girls Blake, 3, and Stella, 2, are very close in age.

Francia originally started the brand when on maternity leave. “Having a baby gave me a brand new outlook on life.” So Francia UYS was born in August 2014. 'Uys' being Francia's maiden name, pronounced 'Ace’. It started in style, debuting at New Zealand Fashion Week as an exhibitor brand. The week was a success and Francia UYS returned this year – its tall black heels worn by the decadently dressed models at Kharl Wirepa Couture’s show. Rebecca was so supportive of Francia in her first year of business, she was offered an official 50 per cent share. “I feel like all the years of practicing in the lounge were preparing us for this,” muses Francia. “We knew from a young age we were not the run of the mill kind of gals and we were excited about that.” With Rebecca still in Australia, and Francia in Auckland, the friends speak daily. “We work very well as a team, Rebecca is the careful thinker and likes to think things over and discuss them and I am quick on my feet and want to move a million miles an hour. We are opposites in a lot of ways and it works really well and in our favour.” The biggest challenge is having so much to juggle. Both working full time, with families and friends that all need attention means life is especially hectic. “We often have little melt downs - not at the same time luckily - but we can laugh at each other and give the other one a little talk about how dramatic they are being, then we move on and get on with it.” The pair pour their heart and soul into each shoe design. Once sketched by Francia and Rebecca, the shoes are made with premium leather in Portugal, a supplier chosen after a global search for the best shoe crafter. “It's not always that easy to make your sketch come to life,

but when it does, it’s like magic.” Sharing their latest ranges, like this one, with loyal customers is a joy. Especially because quality customer care is paramount for the designers, who ensure the mostly four inch heels have a luxurious fit. “We get a lot of repeat customers as they just love the style and comfort combination our shoes offer, but on top of that we often become friends with our customers.” The Pretty Belinda, a modern denim and leather heel, is named after a particularly devoted customer, who happens to be a ‘supermum’ as well. Another favourite style is an emerald satin high-heel with a thick bow already gaining likes on Instagram. “We are just so excited for what the future holds for us - we work extremely hard and know that it’s going to pay off for us. So watch this space.”

Bridge The Gap:

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH CREATIVITY

H

ow do you decide what to wear in the morning? For some, it’s based on comfort or how they look. And for others, it’s how an outfit makes them feel. For those lucky enough to be creating and wearing ‘HeartSpeak’ pieces, it means so much more. HeartSpeak harnesses creativity to help people tap into their potential in ‘Cut & Customise Experiential Workshops’. The brainchild of Amanda Betts, ex co-founder of Red11 Models and cocreator of Bridge The Gap Project, the HeartSpeak team consists of herself, Sera Mitchinson, designer of her selftitled brand, is the ‘Chief HeartSpeak Piece Maker’ and the talented AJ Muru of Centrepoint Fabrics and Mandy Chamberlin, ex-intelligence officer for Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility who followed her passion for embroidery after the birth of her daughter. Amanda is adamant that tapping into your creative self is the first step toward self-healing and helping people away from the dark; anxiety and depression. “Having been through hell and back several times over as a teen, and knowing what it took to make a life for myself after leaving home and school at 15, I know once you’ve discovered your talents and gifts, no one can rob or violate them from you.” “But gifts are nothing if you don’t show them or turn them into skills,” notes Amanda. Why Heart Speak? Like us, each piece is unique with stories to tell. What’s fascinating about making a HeartSpeak piece is when you get together, you pick out bits and bobs, various clothing, and, like a puzzle, you

start piecing everything together until what you’re working on starts taking shape, forming as part of your own story. When you’re making HeartSpeak pieces, you feel safe, inspired to open your heart, share what you know and how you got to where you are. “I always had a vision to do cut and customize workshops, because you feel so empowered when you make your own stuff,” says Amanda. “There’s a sense of pride and reward when you stand back and study your work. When others admire what you’ve done, it helps validate you, building your confidence. It also opens pathways to believe you have something of worth, value, to offer.”

in need in behalf of Bridge The Gap Project. And who else is doing it? Award-winning actress and HeartSpeak Ambassador Danielle Cormack, has been instrumental in raising the profile and fundraising, rolling up her sleeves to do the work. They say it takes a village to raise a child. So we’re lucky to have iconic pre-loved designer and vintage clothing store, K’Rd’s Paperbag Princess, being hugely supportive, which has enabled us to do more with less, giving our people access to a sleuth of preloved High Street, designer and commercial brands.

How does the programme work? For each piece sold, Amanda & the Heartspeak team are able to donate resources, time & workshops to youth

t is 35 years since the first Moontide collection was launched in Auckland, New Zealand. Over the years Moontide has spread its wings and is now represented in more than 50 countries around the world. One of the driving forces for Moontide since its inception has been to reflect the monumental changes in fashion and lifestyle. Everyone at Moontide is passionate about swimwear. We realise that for most women, swimwear is the least amount of clothing they will be seen wearing in public, therefore fit is paramount.

At Moontide we fit and then refit all our garments in order to achieve the perfect fit. Our aim is to give beach confidence to all our customers when wearing Moontide swimwear. The 2016 / 17 collection is no exception; our pool side elegance continues this season with prints & textures inspired by global traditions. Tropical Florals can be found paired with contrasting prints creating the illusion of texture in harmonious tones of paradise Islands or the majestic jewel colours of tropical birds. In Raw Coast we showcase the magnificent

hues of the ocean fading in to the more serene blues & greys of the lapping waves. Stark Shadow pays attention to simple shapes with minimal styling the monochromatic prints working perfectly with the returning sporting aesthetic. CUSTOM MADE L ASER CUT WEDDING STATIONERY, ARTWORK & HOMEWARES.

John Zimmermann: THE MAN BEHIND THE DESIGNS

I

don’t know what to expect when I first walk into 63 Mt Eden Rd. Slotted between a sushi store and a gift shop, John Zimmermann Couture is hidden away amongst the bustle of uptown Auckland. Its location adds to the air of mystery, as his discerning clients seek out the couturier. Even the window displays stand out, with handmade pieces carefully positioned for the passer-by to stop and wonder: who is John Zimmermann Couture and why have I not heard of him? The answer is simple. John is only known by those in the know and unless you know, you won’t seek his store out. But when you do, it’s not an experience easily forgotten. His store is the epitome of timeless luxury, from beautiful diamond jewelery to the gigantic vintage mirror. John welcomes me inside, quick to offer me a drink as I browse the array of gold, lace, and sequins on offer. Clearly inspired by 1930’s and ‘50’s couture, everything John designs has a touch of contemporary style to it. After all, wedding photos last forever and John’s pieces are classic yet keep up with the changing trends in bridal couture.

EVERYTHING JOHN DESIGNS HAS A TOUCH OF CONTEMPORARY STYLE TO IT.” “A successful dress for me is not one that makes the guests say, what a beautiful dress,” he muses. “But one that makes them say - the bride looks beautiful.” This idea is evident in the detail in each garment, be it white leather detail or gold sequins, every stitch is treated with tasteful opulence. This level of care is applied to his couture designs as well, a key part of John’s work as a designer. Delving into John’s past, it is no surprise to learn that he trained under the famed New Zealand designer Patrick Steel. Known for his upmarket designs and trackside glamour, Steel quickly made a name for himself in the 1970’s, experiencing success well into the ‘80’s and ‘90’s with women clamoring to own a Steel piece.

50

John’s private atelier in the back of the store reveals more about the man behind the designs then perhaps is intended. Always working, always seeking new inspiration with fragments of material across the walls, each as eye-catching as the next. Despite my awe with the dresses and the process, John brings the focus back to the bride. It’s a long relationship and one that could bring great stress. It’s the customers John remembers, each one unique and each one bringing their own fond memories. From online imitations to off the rack wedding dresses, the art of the couturier is a dying one. Yet, as he always has, John Zimmermann continues to draw, design and craft his art - if you know where to find him.

Trish Peng:

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE COUTURE

B

orn and raised in New Zealand, Trish Peng has become a well-known name in couture design for evening and bridal wear. Since she was 7 years old, Trish knew she wanted to be a fashion designer and learnt how to sew at a young age. She chats with us about who inspires her and what trends she is seeing for this season and her predictions for what the near future holds for bridal wear. 1. Where do you draw inspiration from? Women inspire me! As everything we create is bespoke, custom made to a client, I design for each woman's style / shape and aesthetic. My collections are also timeless pieces, I try to design and cater for every body shape but still remaining with my feminine, elegant aesthetic. Client's can either choose a current design / mix and match or I design full custom for them.

'INSPIR ATION BORN FROM THE DESIRE TO MAKE WOMEN FEEL BEAUTIFUL.' - TRISH PENG

2. What is your favourite part of designing bridal wear? We go through a journey with every bride, an 8 month process where we really get to know each bride from start to finish. My favourite moments and most rewarding are usually at their final fittings with their bridesmaid / Mum, the moment they see the completed dress with the veil is very emotional and at one point in time either the bride or entourage will shed a happy tear! 3. Which designer did you look up to growing up? I grew up inspired by Vera Wang and the empire she created starting at the age of 40. She is definitely someone I aspire to be like. 4. Is there a particular trend you are really responding to this season? My new collection is all hand beaded to every client's measurements. It is contouring the body with embellishments such as pearls and beading / panelled in the right places. 5. What are your trend predictions for 2017 in bridal wear? Most of my bride's weddings are in 2017 / 2018 and many are leaning towards the 3D floral lace that is slightly embellished and sheer, giving a beautiful light ethereal effect. Going with a slight blush / nude or light grey tone. I think the detachable skirt is also a big style as they can take it off after the ceremony and it becomes a 2 in 1 dress.

all over the place and am constantly meeting new people. And the money is great! Are there any particular co-stars that you've enjoyed working in particular? That’s a hard one as I have worked with so many good people. My favourites are all Kiwis and Aussies though. Actors like Sam Neill in THE DISH, Robyn Malcolm in AGENT ANNA, Guy Pearce and Aaron Pedersen in the Aussie TV series JACK IRISH, Richard Roxburgh in RAKE and Paul Hogan in CHARLIE AND BOOTS and STRANGE BEDFELLOWS.

The Man behind UNDERBELLY:

THE TALE OF TWO CITIES

R

oy Billing - actor, writer, ambassador spills all on life in New Zealand, his passion, dreams and regrets.

What was it like growing up in a small town in Northland? It wasn’t really my thing! I yearned for the school holidays so I could visit grandparents in Auckland. I am a city boy through and through. Not that there is anything wrong with the country life…just isn’t for me. My wife and I tried living on a country property two and a half hours south of Sydney a few years back, but only lasted 4 years before the bright lights enticed us back to the city! Earlier this year, you were involved in a dramatised documentary about the controversial Pike River mining disaster. Was it a difficult project to work on? It is always difficult working on productions that portray real people and real events. There is an obligation

62

to maintain the integrity of the people and the situation concerned. Pike River was a dreadful catastrophe and wounds haven’t yet healed, so we were all aware that the production was going to stir up emotions. I played mine manager, Peter Whittall, so that was difficult as he turned out to be one of the villains of the piece. The mine explosion was a disaster waiting to happen and the attempted cover up was disgusting. The end result was 29 deaths that could have been avoided. What draws you to want to work on a television series or on a movie? Acting is my job and my passion. Roles in film and TV productions mean your work is seen by a large audience, much, much more so than a stage production, and you have much more scope than the narrow limitations of a dark little theatre stage. I love the immediacy of filming, and the collaborative nature of working with a film crew. I get to travel to work

What would be your dream role to play? That is yet to be revealed as you never know what is around the corner. That’s what is exciting about what I do. For example I had no idea in 2009 that I would play one of Australia’s favourite criminals, Aussie Bob Trimbole, in one of the UNDERBELLY series that was watched by millions of people around the world, including New Zealand. The first episode, when screened in Australia, reached 20% of the population. Do you have any regrets about turning down any roles? I can’t recall turning down anything I’ve regretted. Not that there has been much. I am a working actor and take what comes along unless the script is appalling or I have a moral objection to the content. Charity has always played an important role in your career what causes are closest to you? I’ve always believed in using celebrity and good fortune to help others and to give something back. Currently I am patron of the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation in Sydney and have helped them raise money for equipment, research and patient comfort. I’m also a big fan of Dry July which helps raise money to assist cancer patients. Also the Actors Benevolent fund which helps actors who’ve fallen on hard times due to injury or illness.

Next Gen gets a makeover AUCKLAND’S MOST EXCLUSIVE HEALTH & LIFESTYLE CLUB REVEALS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART GYMNASIUM

W

ith the inevitable body-baring months of summer just around the corner, it’s a common time for us to rethink our exercise routines and look at trying something new. But do a simple Google search and you’re guaranteed to feel overwhelmed by the endless individual workout options in this city. Circuit training, Pilates studios, Zumba, Yoga, Barre; too much choice can be paralyzing and with our intentions firmly set on breaking a sweat, inaction is quite the opposite of what we are out to achieve. But fear not, dear Eye Magazine readers, because there exists a local club nearby which offers all of the above and more. No need to sign up to a separate tennis team, aquatic centre and gymnasium across the four corners

64

of the city; it’s all under (and above) one roof at this exclusive wellness hub. You may have heard of it; we’re talking about Next Gen Auckland Domain. With its state-of-the-art premise housing multiple pools and a myriad of enticing studio classes under cover, take a short wander up to the rooftop and you’ll find tennis courts accompanied by stunning views; the bustling Auckland CBD on one side, the lush Auckland Domain on the other. Already a favourite among many Aucklanders, Next Gen makes working out an activity to look forward to. And it’s set to soon be enjoyed by even more, thanks to its recently refurbished gymnasium. The existing locale has always been a sight to behold - complete with its art laden walls and ceiling sculptures which greet you on entrance - but it’s the newly renovated gym area, offering

countless additional benefits, which has us wanting to sign up on the spot. Specifically designed by Next Gen’s in-house experts, the team have created a highly considered new layout, allowing members to maximise their training sessions in any of eight ‘Zones’ that are most suited to their individual objectives. The Cardio Zone offers exercises which optimise fitness levels and provide variety to workouts. Using state of the art Technogym equipment, you can connect to the internet and monitor your progress effortlessly each time you do a session. The Arena is where Next Gen’s signature High Intensity Interval Training (HITT) sessions are run. Engaging, fun and motivational, it’s the perfect workout for those who are time-poor but want fast results.

The Functional Zone dramatically improves every day movement, with three dimensional cable machines which encourage the body to use all six primal movement patterns. The Strength Zone offers a wide selection of ergonomic equipment to tone, strength and condition your muscles by using natural movements under resistance. The Tone Zone uses fixed resistance machines to safely and effectively provide health and strength benefits, including increased muscle and bone density, joint stability, enhanced sports performance and conditioning. The High Performance Zone offers the best possible machinery to those seeking noticeable improvements in endurance and recovery. The Flexibility Zone contains ample space and tools to perform a wide range of stretching, breathing and

mobility exercises to enhance range of motion and general relaxation. This zone also contains high-tech Power Plate vibration machines. Set to become a favourite for those on the go, the machines enable an effective full body workout in just 20 minutes, with added benefits of flexibility and fat loss. Finally, there’s the Xpress Zone. For those times when you need your own space, this friendly and inviting area provides a comprehensive workout all in one spot – perfect for new members wanting an initial taste of what’s on offer, without having to walk to each of the different Zones of the gym. When you have finished your workout, take advantage of the club’s many added benefits. Wind down and relax in the regeneration spa, complete with a sauna, steam room, spa pool and plunge pool. Head to the café if

you’re feeling peckish, where you’ll find a delicious food and beverage list comprising both healthy and hedonistic options. Feeling social? Stick around for one of the many popular members’ events like “Bubbles and Tunes” on Friday nights – it’s all about balance at this club, where relaxation is ranked as highly as exercise. Nestled conveniently on the fringe of the city centre, this place has it all. Being right by the motorway it is perfectly positioned for a post-work gym session, end-of-week drinks, or a spot of tennis on a sunny Saturday morning. With its thoroughly modern attitude to health, you can have your cake and eat it too at Next Gen – and rest assured, you’ll have burnt it off before you get home. 09 348 5600 nextgenclubs.co.nz

Telephone conversations Them: ABC, Michelle speaking. Me: Mr X, please. Michelle: May I tell him who’s calling? Me: No point, he won’t know who I am. Michelle: May I tell him what it’s about? Me: No. It won’t help, he has no idea about the subject matter of my call. Michelle: Mr X won’t take the call if I don’t tell him who’s calling and what it’s about. Me: Well, Michelle, he’ll be missing out on a million dollar deal, then, won’t he? Perhaps you’ll get him to call me about it – bye.

Them: ABC, Michelle speaking. Me: Mr X, please. Michelle: May I tell him who’s calling? Me: DE Michelle: Putting you through now … Brrrrrring, brring Mr X: Hello. Me: Kia ora. Mr X: Who’s that? Me: Your receptionist asked that same question and I told her. She said it was for the purpose of telling you; did she not tell you? Mr X: No. Me: You might not appreciate this but it’s a bit of a bugbear for me when I go to the effort of identifying myself for no good purpose. Mr X: So, who’s this? ….. ACC vs an embittered colleague who is well past suffering fools (“Embittered” for short) Brrrrrring, brring Embittered: Mike November ACC: Hello, is that Mike November? Embittered: (sigh) Yes. ACC: Hello Mr November, this is Juliet Tango from ACC. Embittered: Hello.

68

ACC: Mr November, I need to talk to you about your self-employed ACC levy; it’s overdue. Embittered: (frik) OK. ACC: Before we talk about it, I need to ask you some security questions. Firstly, what’s your mother’s maiden name? Embittered: I’m not going to answer security questions. You’re calling me. ACC: Yes, but I need you to answer security questions before we can discuss your ACC levy. Embittered: I’m not answering security questions. It’s silly. I know who I am. You know who I am because you called me. If you want to talk about my ACC levy, go ahead. ACC: I can’t talk about your ACC levy unless you answer security questions. Embittered: I suppose that’s the end of the conversation then. ACC: Alright, but first I need to tell you that you must pay your overdue levy by x date. Embittered: You can’t tell me that. Either we are discussing my levy or we aren’t. You can’t have it both ways. ACC: Well then you need to call me back by 5 pm tomorrow to discuss the levy. Embittered: That won’t be happening. 1. I’m on holiday. 2. I can’t discuss my levy with you – you said so yourself. ACC: You have to call me back. Embittered: If I call you back, should I ask you some security questions? ACC: No. Embittered: If I call you back and ask you some security questions, will you answer them? ACC: No Embittered: I won’t be calling then. We wouldn’t be able to discuss my levy. ACC: That doesn’t make sense. Embittered: Agreed. Goodbye.

* I note that “Embittered” has insisted on retaining copyright to that conversation. He might try and sell it in order to pay his debt to ACC – loser.

Me: Kia ora, I’d like to make an appointment for [my dog] Boo Boo. Vet’s nurse: That’ll be Dr X? Me: No, it’ll be Boo Boo’s vet; he doesn’t have a doctor. Vet’s nurse (thinking I’m joking): So, when would you like to see Dr X? Me: Is a doctor more expensive than a vet? Vet’s nurse: Dr X is free Tuesday afternoon. Me: Has Boo Boo’s vet qualified as a doctor? Vet’s nurse: Tuesday at 3pm? Me: To see the vet or the doctor? Vet’s nurse: Tuesday at 3pm, then, see you then.

Me: DE here. You left me a message about my 6 monthly check-up? Dental nurse: Yes, Dr Sutcliffe could see you next Thursday afternoon. [Name not withheld to punish the guilty.] Me: So Erl’s passed Med School, not in 6 years, but in the 6 months since my last visit? I always knew he was clever. (Sound of something flying over somebody’s head). Dental nurse: Is Thursday ok? Me: Now that he’s a doctor, make it an hour-long appointment so he can check my back. Dental nurse: What? Me: What about Thursday at 1pm? Dental nurse: Yes, that’s free. The doctor will see you then. Me: The doctor will not see me then. Dental nurse: What? Me: Thursday, 1300; lock it in, Eddie.

Itchy-Pet Syndrome by TANYA CRAMOY B.S. Animal Science, J.D. Owner of Ella Bella’s Pet Boutique

E

very day I have more than one person come to me looking for something to stop their pet’s incessant itching. Today, a pet owner can find natural shampoos, creams, balms, pills and sprays to soothe itchiness -- but will it ‘stop’ the problem? Not likely. Two of the top three reasons for excessive itchiness in pets are diet related which means that unless the underlying issues are addressed, you will spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars over the course of your pet’s life simply soothing (not to mention the vet bills!). Diets containing low-quality ingredients are the number one cause of itchy pets, hands down. Cheap or artificial ingredients, like corn, colouring or by-products, are found in all grocery store foods as well as most veterinary “prescription” diets. Choosing high-quality, grain-free, natural and holistic foods for your cat or dog, and supplementing with probiotics, digestive enzymes, and Omega-3 fatty acids can save them from not only a lifetime of skin problems but from more severe medical issues as well.

The Evolution of the Kiwi Bach

LUXURY VILLA SPECIALISTS, TOUCH OF SPICE, HAVE BEEN OPERATING IN NEW ZEALAND FOR OVER A DECADE. WE CAUGHT UP WITH JACQUI SPICE, FOUNDER & CEO, TO DISCUSS HOW THE QUINTESSENTIAL KIWI BACH HAS GROWN TO RIVAL SOME OF THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN THE WORLD. How have you seen the market change for holiday accommodation? I started promoting premium holiday homes as a “luxury” accommodation option back in 2005 and have seen a very significant change in the market since then. Back then it was all about luxury hotels and lodges so I had my work cut out to put the holiday home concept in front of potential guests. Marketing was all word of mouth and referrals, which we really relied on. It was the “tell 10 friends” old school method of marketing - now it’s primarily all online and guests can compare five properties at one time to see who offers the best rates and facilities. Thanks to the likes of Air BnB we are starting to see huge growth in our sector. What impact has this had on the holiday home market? It’s had a very positive impact. The market has grown into a varied, vibrant and luxurious option for people seeking unique accommodation. Due to the plethora of holiday homes now available guests are becoming more and more discerning in their expectations; expecting fully

8

equipped homes with high speed internet, Netflix, luxury bathroom amenities, provisioning. All our villas are luxuriously appointed, with top of the line equipment and in impeccable surrounds. As our guests’ needs and desires grow, we are also continuously striving to find the latest villa to ‘wow’ their socks off! For those who usually stay in hotels, why is now the time to make the switch to a holiday home? Because these days you can get a three bedroom home the same size as your own home for the same price as a one bedroom hotel suite Gone are the days when you need to cram your three kids and yourselves in to a hotel suite or motel. The benefits are endless. You have more space, you have more privacy, you can cook for yourself if you

Jacqui Spice

want to or organise staff to do it if you don’t. You get all of the benefits of a hotel without having to compromise on the things you love. Beds are triple sheeted with top-quality linen, there’s unlimited WiFi, SKY TV and someone on hand should you need any assistance. You get the best of both worlds! What do you see for the future of the holiday home? They are just going to keep getting bigger and better, a bit like super yachts! That is why we have now launched our Residence Collection the very finest luxury accommodation available throughout New Zealand. Ranging from NZ$5,000 to NZ$35,000 per night these properties are set to rival some of the very best throughout the world. It’s a very exciting time for Touch of Spice!

Exclusively positioned in ‘The Preserve’ territory of the golf course means that it also benefits from some of the most spectacular views in Queenstown, with undisturbed views over Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges. The property was built to maximise the outstanding views with floor to ceiling windows throughout. The layout is symmetrical with two bedrooms (complete with ensuite bathrooms) within each wing. It’s luxuriously furnished throughout, with a sleek urban feel. 10

Stelvio, Queenstown

Taking pride and place at the peak of Queenstown Hill, one of the resort town’s most desirable locations, this architecturally built magnum opus marries exquisite contemporary design with warmth and comfort; providing an idyllic location for a crème de la crème vacation in nature’s playground. The alfresco area is an entertainer’s dream with a large sunken fire pit, hot tub and fully equipped outdoor kitchen. If keeping fit and healthy whilst on holiday is your thing, Stelvio also features a fully equipped gym, as well as an outdoor yoga platform, capturing the sensational views to perfection. AND FINALLY….THE ISLAND OASIS Kauri Bay, Moturua Island This stunning beachside house, designed by famous New Zealand architect Pete Bossley, has been skilfully built to take advantage of the soothing water and mountain views as well as to fit into its native surroundings of the idyllic Moturua Island.

With the island steeped in Maori history the owner has kept this history alive through the build of the property, with a large Tiki mural on the house exterior plus books and artefacts throughout which are kept as sacred art collections and memoirs of what once was. In complete contrast to the history of the main building, the property’s boat shed is home to a wide range of ‘big boy toys’, including a collection of jet skis, fishing gear, sea kayaks and up to the minute diving gear, providing all you need for an island getaway.

& THE ORCON DESIGNER SERIES

O

rcon hopes to banish the boring modem - at least for a limited time - by commissioning five New Zealand artists to turn the modem into a work of art. Otis Frizzell is one of these artists who has crafted a unique modem design for the Orcon Designer Series. Each modem, as fitting for a work of art, is a limited edition, with only 500 of each kind available. Otis’s ‘Cable Manaia’ channels authentically Aotearoa designs.

Modems are usually mundane objects - did you draw any inspiration from the object itself for your piece? I really wanted to make it look like a small artwork, rather than just slapping a picture on a modem. So my original artwork was designed specifically for the task. I wanted to treat the modem like I would a canvas. The original work was done on canvas, and I was actually rather stoked that the texture came through once they printed the modems.

OTIS FRIZZELL

Where do you draw inspiration from? All over! Inspiration can come from anywhere, really. I did a very basic scribble while I was on the phone to one of the women from Mango and basically nailed it straight away. Sometimes you get the thunderbolt idea, but sometimes I stare at a blank page for hours… Or days... Your one of a kind large scale will be auctioned for Forest & Bird - do you have a personal connection to their work? I do a lot of work with a lot of charities and causes. All of them are valid recipients of a wee funds boost, but you basically just have to pick one! Forest & Bird do great work. What upcoming projects or ventures to you have in the near future? I’m working on an exhibition with my friend and art collaborator, Mike Weston. If we pull it together it should happen at the beginning of October. And, as always, I’ve got a lot on with The Lucky Taco. New products, Wellington On A Plate, general world domination… My wife is the real brains and drive behind TLT, but being the right hand man to such a driven woman keeps me very busy.

Lisa Vaughan

Home is where the heart is AND WHEN IT COMES TO LISA VAUGHN, SOUTHLAND FRANCHISEE FOR G.J. GARDNER HOMES, THERE IS CERTAINLY A LOT OF LOVE PUT INTO EACH AND EVERY BUILD.

L

isa and partner Simon Culhane have been running the Southland office for over 3-and-a-half years, having taken on the franchise at the end of 2012. There had been strong requests from the Southland market regarding a G.J. office, while Simon a builder by trade felt it would be a natural progression, it certainly was going to be new territory for Lisa. At the time Lisa owned a restaurant at Sterling Point in Bluff, which she had been managing for 7 years, the busy hospitality life took its toll and after selling up she and Simon began their journey with New Zealand’s most successful home builders. Being born and bred in the deep south, Lisa is true to her roots. Growing up on the family farm she has always had a love of horses, becoming the proud owner of her first pony when she was four. With her father involved in a racing stable where he kept his own harness racehorses, Lisa gained an after school

28

job where she learnt about nutrition and training as well as riding track work for various thoroughbred trainers at Invercargill’s Ascot Park. This led to her obtaining her own trainers licence at just 20, a passion she still continues to this day, starting each morning at 4.30am to work the horses which she feels sets her up for a great day in the office. A woman of many talents, Lisa works as the accountant, contracts manager, colour specialist and even a sales consultant when called upon. Being good with numbers keeps her busy during the day, but she loves being able to work with her clients seeing the build come together and turning their dreams into a reality. The framework for construction really runs in the family, with Lisa’s son Jesse now a qualified builder. Together, the two have renovated a couple of their rental properties over the years, something that Lisa finds very therapeutic at times. Not one to rest on

her laurels, Lisa has also completed half marathons and even Kepler Challenges believing you’re only as good as your last win. Now with G.J.’s, Lisa finds that building a home can be an exciting and rewarding journey, from choosing house plans through to the finishing touches – she does her utmost to make every house they build a home.

The Property Partnership A REFRESHING POINT OF DIFFERENCE!

T

he market for property in Auckland is booming, and it’s hard to know who to turn to when taking that next step into the property market and sometimes it’s just a case of too much information, it’s hard to make sense of it all. When it comes down to it, in today’s market it is important to have an experienced professional represent you in what is potentially, for most people, the most expensive financial transaction of their lives. Searching for the right real estate agent however can be hard work itself. Who can you trust with such an expensive investment? And most importantly, who can achieve not just a sale but a premium outcome for you! The answer, Harcourts Auckland Central’s own Bruce Fyfe. Bruce’s heritage comes from the families building company ‘Fyfe Homes’ & ‘Fyfe Kitchens’ where it was a natural progression to train as a builder while also being involved with all aspects of the construction industry. His experience extends to design, management of a residential building company, project management for a publically

listed company onto operating as an accomplished real estate sales person. Bruce isn’t just another real estate sales person, he’s a property facilitator and an expert one at that. With a profound knowledge of property and genuine desire to help achieve the investment goals of his buyers and sellers, sees him build rapport and trust with his clients from a very professional and committed foundation. Bruce states “I like to bring a refreshing and diverse perspective to service and results within the real estate industry supported by our Harcourts international network and leading-edge technology. On a personal level, I am committed to full and detailed written reporting while ensuring my clients feel a part of the process every step of the way”. Bruce’s extremely high sales success record under the hammer at auction is testament his clients are dealing with an expert who can master any challenge and achieve a result worth celebrating! Dealing within an ever changing landscape with unitary plan changes, Reserve Bank policy, loan to value ratio criteria, tax implications, meth testing, building inspections to mention only a few, presents very real challenges confronting a property buyer and seller in today’s market place. The need to engage an experienced professional in your real estate sales transaction ensures that this partnership provides a smooth transition to a premium result!

Invest in Property for Success

INVESTING IN A RENTAL PROPERTY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS – AND LIKE ANY INVESTMENT, IT PAYS TO PROTECT YOUR ASSET.

M

anaging a rental property may seem straightforward, but there are plenty of unforeseen pitfalls. A few dollars saved on management fees can seriously impact your cashflow, or even the value of the asset. The best way to protect your investment is to have a local management company take care of your property and your tenants. Quinovic have 10 offices Auckland wide, so we know your local market and can secure the best return on your

investment. Plus, you’ll have 24/7 access to your property manager, so no need to worry if the tenant has a problem while you’re away. Here’s why you should experience the Quinovic difference: Minimising vacancies An unexpected vacancy can wreak havoc with your cashflow, especially at peak times like the Christmas holiday season. A few weeks’ lost rent soon adds up to a full year of property management fees. At Quinovic, we have systems in place to minimise vacancies. We structure our leases to reduce the chances of a surprise vacancy at peak times. We make sure the property is advertised and viewings conducted well before the property becomes vacant. A professional relationship Your property is a business and should be treated accordingly. Self-managing landlords often find it hard to establish a truly professional relationship with tenants or to insist on the terms of the lease if the tenant experiences personal difficulties. Quinovic removes all that awkwardness from the landlord-tenant relationship. No need for

difficult conversations with tenants – we’ve seen it all before and we know how to handle any sitution fairly and professionally. And that works both ways - many quality tenants choose not to rent a self-managed property due to bad experiences with unprofessional landlords. Quality tenants We know what makes a great – or not so great - tenant. Our extensive vetting process, including reference and credit checks, means that people with poor rental or credit history rarely apply for Quinovic properties. Maximum return on your investment As well as thorough knowledge of your local rental market, we have a systemised process for annual rent reviews. Many self-managing landlords feel uncomfortable reviewing rent for fear of upsetting a good tenant. This can have a huge impact on your longterm cashflow. Taking care of the fine print Negotiating a lease is not just about the weekly rent - there are other factors to consider, like renewal dates and expectations regarding inspections and garden maintenance. Don’t leave these things to chance - a simple misunderstanding can lead to unexpected vacancies or financial loss. At Quinovic, we’ve got lease negotiation down to a fine art. Throughout the tenancy, we keep thorough records of all inspections, correspondence and any notice given under the lease, so everyone knows where they stand.

David Graham, Quinovic Viaduct With a background in travel and commercial property, David and his team provide specialised advice and solutions for serviced apartments and townhouses from Ponsonby to Parnell. “Property management is all about great relationships,” says David. “We take first class care of your investment and your tenants.”

09 3021458 david@quinovic-viaduct.co.nz Brendon Stuckey, Quinovic West Auckland Brendon and his wife have been passionate property investors for more than 10 years, both self-managing tenancies and hiring Quinovic as professional property managers. “Quinovic had a tenant ready to move in on settlement day and when the tenants changed over, we only incurred one day’s vacancy,” says Brendon. “That’s when I understood the Quinovic difference.”

David Vinsen, Quinovic Parnell David Vinsen has invested in property for over 30 years and has an extensive background in professional governance. He is Chairman of the Parnell Community Board, and a past president of the MVDI. “We work closely with corporate clients and relocation agencies to find suitable tenants for your high-end property,” says David. “We know our investors are looking for long-term capital gain rather than rental yield, so protecting the value of your asset is a top priority. Our staff notice the little things and take care of them before they become a problem.”

New Zealand’s new face turns 15 15 YEARS AGO, MANY CHINESE TEENAGERS TOOK THEIR FIRST STEPS INTO MIDDLE EARTH, CARRYING THEIR DREAMS AND HOPES. FOR MOST OF THEM, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME TO EXPLORE A NEW WORLD, ALONE WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS. FACING LANGUAGE BARRIERS AND THEIR FEARS, THEY STARTED A NEW JOURNEY.

Skykiwi’s leading team

I

n the same year, the Skykiwi Forum was established. In 2001, people used discussion forums to communicate online. Seeing no such forum for Chinese people in New Zealand, a couple of Chinese students saw the need to build a forum to help newcomers overcome daily life issues. Whether house leasing or car hunting, you can always find useful information on Skykiwi Forum. Over time, the Skykiwi Forum has become the best-known information hub for the Chinese community in New Zealand. Eventually, the Skykiwi Forum developed into SKYKIWI. COM, an integrated media organization. Currently, SKYKIWI. COM is a portal website featuring all kinds of information about New Zealand. In the past 15 years, SKYKIWI.COM has remained the most influential as well as the fastest growing media in New Zealand’s Chinese community. SKYKIWI.COM is also a bridge between China and New Zealand. In the past 15 years, SKYKIWI.COM has witnessed and recorded all the key milestones between the two countries. It is not only the communication channel of Chinese society in New Zealand, but also an important channel for Chinese people to understand New Zealand. Statistics show that over 70% of Chinese overseas students planning to study in New Zealand will seek information about New Zealand through SKYKIWI.COM before departure, and over 80% of Chinese people in New Zealand use SKYKIWI. COM as an information platform. Most readers in New Zealand are aged 18 to 40, reflecting the majority of the Chinese community.

Ally Zhang, founder of SKYKIWI.COM, is optimistic about SKYKIWI.COM’s future. “The relationship between New Zealand and China has never been so tight,” said Ms Zhang. “New Zealand has been providing essential products and services to the Chinese market, such as education, tourism and food.” “Meanwhile, China is New Zealand’s most important market. Education and tourism links have been growing strongly in the past decade. China is one of New Zealand’s largest sources of international students, while tourism and agricultural commodity exports also make a great contribution to the New Zealand economy.” “In China, if you want first-hand information about New Zealand, SKYKIWI.COM is your best choice as we are the biggest resource centre” said Ms Zhang. “We are Chinese people who understand New Zealand the most; and we are New Zealanders who understand China the most. Who are we? We are ’CHIWI’; we’re committed to serve our readers well and bring our two countries even closer.”

House of Dumplings: PUTTING A FRESH TWIST ON A FAVOURITE

Y

ou’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t like dumplings. The warm, bite-sized bundles are full of flavour and have become a popular staple in New Zealand’s diverse food scene. As they become more readily available, discerning customers are no longer happy to settle for just any variety but seek the highest quality. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that Wellington’s House of Dumplings has quickly earned its regulars. Owner and Founder Vicky Ha is affectionately referred to as ‘The Dumpling Queen’ ever since their rapid growth in Wellington. VIcky and her team now have their sights set on Auckland, from local markets such as Parnell’s La Cigale Market, and food shows to stocking her beautiful range of frozen dumplings in select supermarkets. Vicky is firm in her philosophy of quality ingredients and healthy food. A concept that she wholeheartedly believes can be applied to dumplings.

50

Each single piece is carefully handmade from scratch, be it the pastry or their famous Mum’s Sauce. While some argue that food requires additives for taste, Vicky only uses fresh herbs, spices and seasoning and forgoes MSG, and artificial colouring or flavouring that has become synonymous with frozen food. Vicky strives to serve the food that she was brought up eating. “My grandma only used the best ingredients and used nothing artificial; I want my food to be the same,” she says. Moreover, the complete process has been undertaken with care, to ensure the best local ingredients are used. “We love getting our ingredients from local producers that are only a few hours drive from us and knowing that local produce can be traced back to an individual farm,” Vicky explains. Not only does this ensure the food is fresher but also supports the local economy. Vegetables from Levin, Rangitikei corn fed chicken, Long Bush free-range pork and Taupo beef from the most sustainable farm in the country.

Vicky has strong convictions when it comes to cooking and believes that food should not just taste great, but also be good for you and good for the environment. “We are aware of the environmental cost of our food, and we try our best to minimize the impact on our planet”, she says. And while it’s not the cheapest option for a small business, at least 90 per cent of their packaging is biodegradable. House of Dumplings takes the humblest of food and shows that there is a way to create healthy, ecoconscious and delicious cuisine using fresh and local produce. If the Queen approves, then it’s good enough for us. House of Dumplings Frozen Ready Meals can be found at select supermarkets across New Zealand. For the full list, please visit our website.

IN THE STUDIO with TINA KAPP-KAILEA,

The Woman behind Sugarcoated

T

ina Kapp-Kailea is a woman who is constantly on the move. Her boutique Auckland cake studio Sugarcoated keeps her busy. From corporate cakes to luxury wedding and birthday celebrations, all her pieces are an art form as she brings a vision to life for her high-end clientele. Nothing quite epitomises a special occasion more so than a cake, and Tina’s creations say what words cannot. Her cakes are just as beautiful to look at as they are to taste. Not one to settle for the latest trends, Tina is constantly designing new, modern and innovative cakes that push the envelope. She has a natural eye for design, colour and pays a lot of attention to detail. Her latest works are inspired by the awe and beauty of geodes, hollow rocks that are lined with stunning crystals. The geodes contrast the light and airy styles of old and achieve a natural yet glamorous look. With these cakes, Tina has expanded the organic trend with pieces that exude luxury. She often incorporates edible gold and silver leaf accents for that special touch of glamour. Her cakes take hours of planning and work and the finished product speaks for itself. Lined with edible crystals and paired with marbleised finish she brings a subtle grandeur to the dreamy look of wedding cakes. Tina’s cakes have received substantial media buzz of late. From glossy magazine photoshoots to select mention on top blogs and newspaper articles, her pieces are becoming famous in their own right and she’s excited about the next wedding season.

TINA KAPP-KAILEA

“Brides are after a new look for their special day and often give me creative freedom to sketch something unique to suit their colour scheme and reception venue. Everything from invitations to flowers and menu choices to fabric samples can play a part in the final design choices for a cake.” It is passion that fuels Tina’s work and she is open about the humble beginnings of Sugarcoated. She reflects on her upbringing in Germany, where baking was a Saturday family ritual. “I used to watch my mum make her signature Black Forest Gateau for special occasions,” Tina says. “It wasn’t until years later, when I was decorating my son’s first birthday cake that I rediscovered my love of baking and found my calling in cake design.” In late 2014 Tina bid farewell to the corporate world, took the proverbial plunge and set up her own cake design studio at home. “After a few twists and turns,“ laughs Tina. A cake from Sugarcoated is made from only fresh, natural ingredients and Tina aims to maintain the hands-on nature of her business. Sugarcoated offers a personalised service, which includes a free consultation to ensure you get a truly unique service and a cake tailored to suit your special occasion.

roudly sponsored by Renault New Zealand, New Zealand’s Best Dining Guide, Res Diary and Southern Hospitality, the day brought together the hospitality industry as they fought for the title and grand prize. The day kicked off with an egg and spoon race, followed by an oyster tray race and a group challenge involving a precarious Eiffel Tower of wine glasses. It also included a celebrity leg where New Zealand’s well-known personalities raced for their charity. The final included Billie Jo Ropiha, David Seymour, and Paul Goldsmith, with David Seymour taking out the competition for Lifeline. The waiters’ final, based on the traditional Parisian loaded waiter’s tray, was taken out by Loran Paulich of Paris Butter, who claimed top prize thanks to Renault New Zealand.

hen it comes to makeup application for events such as Race Day, always remember less is more! I am very excited about the upcoming makeup trends for this season – namely the ‘wet look’. This makeup trend leaves your skin looking naturally glossy and luminous. The look is also easy to achieve and requires just a few items. At Elizabeth Arden we have just launched a luxurious wet collection of liquid lipsticks and liquid eyeliners with rich colour intensity and long-lasting finish. Within the collection is also a limited edition liquid highlighter that offers a translucent, lightweight veil of golden shimmer capturing the essence of this radiant look. So set aside your heavy foundation, thick eyeliner, and dark lipstick this coming Melbourne Cup Day and create a makeup look that is timeless, elegant and naturally radiant.

Simple Race Day Tips

from EDITOR, VANESSA GREEN 1: Hydrate well prior to the day and during the day – water not wine.

2: Never take anyone else’s racing book – in fact write your name on yours.

3: Keep your shoes on and your hat on. 4: When betting, make it quick – the TAB lady does not care about which horse you want and why.

Top Tips to get make up ready WITH IMA ASALI, CREATOR AND DIRECTOR OF MELLOW COSMETICS 1: Obviously this is a day to see and be seen. Your eyes and lips are very important on days like this. But they don’t both have to be big. Remember this is a day event, so I suggest if you’re going for big eyes, use a nude or peachy lip to compliment. Otherwise … to really stand out, our Mellow Cosmetics lip stick and lip stain range have some incredible colours that will have everyone turning their heads. 2: Blend, blend, blend! A lot of women are experimenting with contouring, strobing and blushers. For best results, do this in natural lighting. With contouring and blushing…blend really well to ensure you look perfect this look. I suggest you actually take a mirror outside so you’ll see how everyone else will see you on the day. 3: Setting powders will help ensure your foundation lasts the distance.

60

Melbourne Cup can be a long day in the sun, and you want to finish up as beautiful as you started … so this is a definite winner Laura Mercier is a great brand to try.

4: Don’t forget your brows. Your brows really do shape your face. Some find eye brow pencils are easier to (particularly if you’re new to touching up your brows), others prefer brow pomades (powder and brow brush). Finally … just like ‘setting’ … don’t forget to use a brow powder to set your final look (or a brow gel if you have fuller wilder brows). 5: Make Up setting sprays! This will be your winner on the day to keep your face hydrated throughout the day and will also ensure your make stays where it belongs! mellowcosmetics.com

Melbourne Cup Day RED CARPET READY WITH DEBBIE BYRNAND DIRECTOR OF CENTRE OF ATTENTION PRODUCTIONS AND RED CARPET TV

M

elbourne Cup Day’ is the best people watching day of the year! Make sure you are being watched for all the right reasons. Whether you want to attract the attention of the red carpet fashion photographers and fashions in the field judges or just dress comfortably confident, here are a few things I’ve learnt from attending ‘Melbourne Cup Days’.

THE LOOK! W HERE DO W E START? • Face first; I believe a confident photogenic smile is always a great start. So my advice would be, either arrange to have a personalised makeup lesson leading up to the event or book in early with a professional makeup artist & hairstylist for that day. Be sure to make the most of your time with the experts, listen to their advice and ask plenty of questions. If you have a clear idea of the look you’re after have a few pictures ready as a reference. This is the perfect season to try something different like a hot new bright lip colour or bold eyebrows!

• Signature piece; Sometimes we are lucky enough to stumble upon a fabulous pair of shoes, headpiece, dress, a particular piece of jewellery or handbag during the year leading up to race day. If that’s the case use that signature piece to build your look around. • The Dress; What’s your established fashion style? Are you going with it or trying something new? I find its good idea to shop with a trusted friend, sometimes it’s more fun shopping for someone else, you’re more likely to try on something you wouldn’t usually on your own, you’ll be surprised! Or You could always book a professional fashion stylist to come to your home? Maybe host a pre-race day fashion in the fields party with a few girlfriends! Derby day fashion brief is traditionally known as black and white. Here in New Zealand we celebrate Melbourne Cup day, so try to avoid black and give the paparazzi something to smile about with a burst of colour! Consider skirt length, knee length or lower is always elegant and classy. It’s a long day and after a few flutes of champagne, short skirts tend to rise as the sun sets, not a good look.

Same goes with strapless and low cut tops, make sure you can maintain the position of your garment long term comfortably. Continuous hoisting and readjusting will be frustrating for you, especially if caught on camera. • Be prepared; Depending on your days itinerary and venue, you may need to be prepared for a few simple costume changes. If outdoor - indoor prepare an attractive mid size bag with alternate options that compliment your dress; • Headpiece & Floppy sunhat. • Heels & flats • Cover up from the sun with a shawl or light jacket plus a pretty parasol. And of course your favourite fragrance and cosmetic essentials for touch ups. • Glass in hand; Remember to stay hydrated, opt for refreshing sparkling water in your flute or a tall glass with a wedge of citrus in between champagne sessions. Happy punting and Good luck! “I’ll see you on the Red Carpet”.
