EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the wedding issue!

I

love this issue as we have shared a part of my wedding to my now ‘husband’ Lewis Bennett. We decided to make it the Eye wedding issue and you will see both covers featuring beautiful brides. Weddings conjure up all kinds of thoughts; love and stress being two at the top my list. The attention to detail and the time to plan them is all encompassing but the end result is something so magical and full of love. The day was all I dreamed of and it was an incredibly important moment in our lives. I hope you enjoy reading about our day on page 42 to 49. It’s the time of year we are all working frantically ticking things off our list before Christmas. See pages 18 & 19 for our top picks for your gifts! Take a deep breath and enjoy the build up to the holiday season. Last month for the first time I tried My Food Bag - fresh start lite 5. Every meal is under 500 calories and it’s so easy and tasty. I was super impressed and although I consider myself to be a good cook, I learnt lots of new tricks. So if you are lacking in time this is a perfect way to still cook and have great healthy cuisine. This year I also found Birkenstocks sandals – I am sure everyone has been wearing them for years but for me they are new! I thought I had found the best kept secret! Birkenstocks are incredibly comfortable and I could walk a mile in them and their new fashion look ticks every box! They are my favourite for the sunny season ahead. Forever and always

1. Comfort: sometimes the races can become an endurance event, but there is no need to sacrifice comfort for style. Opt for some shorter heels or strappy block heels to stay stylish and look after your feet. Match your shoes to your outfit for a succinct look, or contrast them with your look to make them a stand-out accessory. 2. Plan Ahead: ensure you organise your outfit in enough time to match your accessories and footwear accordingly. If you are wanting to opt for a spring trend, block colours and bold prints are in this season. If you prefer a more classic look, you can’t go wrong with a timeless floral or lace outfit. 3. Make a Statement: decide if you want your outfit or your hat to be the main focal point. If you pick a bold statement headpiece, then a simple and classic outfit will complement this nicely. Similarly, to avoid overkill, if choosing a bold or patterned outfit go for a more minimalistic millinery.

Angela’s Top 5 Race Style Tips

4. Mix it Up: if you’re looking to change up your race attire, both jumpsuits and pantsuits are on trend this season. They offer a fresh and elegant alternative to the classic dress, and are great solutions for the chillier days. 5. Be Creative! The races are a brilliant excuse to dress up and experiment with your outfit and accessories. Stay true to your own style and use this opportunity to have fun with colour, print and texture. Try adding bold accessories to a traditional outfit to really stand out from the crowd.

Race Day Tips 1. When betting, make it quick - people are waiting behind you and the TAB don’t need a 101 on your choosing bet. 2. Keep your shoes, fascinator, hat always on point. 3. Write your name on your racing book and make sure to NEVER take anyone else’s. 4. Keep hydrated all day and prior to the event if you can, make sure it’s water, not wine.

The Hedonist Magazine: INSPIRING READERS TO BE, DO, AND HAVE ANYTHING THEY WANT

T

he Hedonist Magazine was created as a succession of different causes. Co-founder & Editor-in-chief Armand Álvarez was inspired to create the publication after reading “The Essential Law of Attraction Collection, The Teachings of Abraham” by Esther and Jerry Hicks. “From the very first chapter,

16

I felt connected with the idea that we create our own reality,” he explains. “From then on, I started turning my focus on to the positive aspects of my life while witnessing the evidence of the unlimited power I have within me. It was like a memory of what I already knew a long time ago, and now I wanted to share it with the world.”

Photography: Naelia Salas Amnér

How was the concept of The Hedonist created? One morning, I was in New York on my way to work and suddenly I had a strong impulse to call one of my best friends, Cristina, from Barcelona. At that time, she was working as an Editor in Chief for a luxury publication in Spain. I remember feeling goosebumps when we started discussing the possibility of starting our own publication. Cristina had the experience and I had the burning desire to share what I became aware of with the rest of the world. Within a matter of a week, we had the concept, the name, the website and first articles published. And this is how The Hedonist Magazine was born and created, with an idea to inspire people to “be, do and have anything they want.

The Hedonist is all about the importance of feeling good and living life to the fullest. Do you think this has universal appeal? I always talk from my perspective of what I believe is right at any given moment. However, I think regardless your cultural background or context we all want to feel good and happy. Many people believe that to achieve happiness we have to gather things or experience certain events, when in fact, true happiness lies within us. The paradox is that when I feel good and I expect the best outcome in each situation, I get exactly what I want beyond expectations. We celebrate the genius minds and the success of others. We embrace the beauty and natural abundance in life, and The Hedonist is the perfect excuse for us to share this idea.

What is it about The Hedonist that makes readers enjoy and relate to the magazine? The Hedonist is a magazine with an international reach. The topics that we include span from fashion, art, gastronomy, travel and wellbeing through to investments and entrepreneurship. What is common to each and every theme is that it is written and published within a positive context, so I am confident that it’s a very pleasant experience for our readers, as well as being eye opening to certain life events. Who is your dream guest interviewee for The Hedonist? We have many dream guests interviewee from all type of fields and backgrounds! From artists or athletes all the way to entrepreneurs or publishers. Each and every personality has an inspiring story to convey.

DEAF EARS

JASMIN PAKURA, A WRITER FOR PANIC PR.NZ AND MULTI MEDIA MAGAZINES SHARES HER EXPERIENCES AND TRUTH ABOUT BEING DEAF. IT HAS OPENED THE EYES OF EYE MAGAZINE STAFF AND FOR THIS WE THANK HER.

B

eautiful hand gestures, emphasised facial expressions, mispronunciation of words, perhaps a noticeable lisp? If these words spring to mind when I say “I’m deaf”, then you along with many other New Zealanders and non-New Zealanders share a very common, stereotypical view of deaf people. For many it’s a shock to learn I’m deaf. Why? My guess is because I break that stereotypical view of how deaf/Deaf people communicate. Upon finding out I’m deaf, people’s curiosity increases and that’s okay, in fact it’s great! I’m not going to be offended by something you want to know more about, I’m here to spread the word that it’s okay to ask questions. My story? For the sake of your interest we’ll skip these details and just mention that at 15 years of age I received a Cochlear Implant from and that I have always attended mainstream schooling - right through to university. The (very) basic meaning and difference between the two “D’s” deaf: An individual who identifies themselves as being deaf with a uncapitalised “D” have generally grown up in an oral speaking environment and identify themselves with hearing people. It’s likely they attended mainstream schooling and that they may also regard their hearing loss solely in medical terms. Deaf: An individual who identifies themselves as being Deaf with a capitalised “D”, have generally grown up speaking sign language and identify themselves as being culturally deaf. Deaf culture is just like any other culture, they

24

have their own views, beliefs, communities, morals and language. Which I might add is different in every country, and also has different accents in different states or regions, yet rather than the accent being vocal, it’s through a difference in hand movements, speed, posture aka Sign Language. Deaf people do not see their hearing loss in medical terms but as a culture. I cannot stress however that those two definitions only touch the surface of the difference between the two “D’s”. Take myself for example, I view myself as a deaf individual because I identify myself as being a person of hearing and recognise my hearing loss in medical terms. However, I do not identify myself as an individual with a disability similarly to those who are from Deaf Culture. I went to a mainstream school and grew up knowing only oral language but had heavy exposure to Deaf Culture and like many people would in a foreign environment, struggled with language barriers but found a happy medium where both I and other party was understood. I envied the Deaf kids and how they didn’t have communication barriers between each other, whereas I struggled to hear amongst the hearing. These challenges taught me a skill that I am still thankful for this day - lip reading! Identity Struggle Growing up I struggled with identity because I was not like people with normal hearing and I was not like people who are culturally Deaf. The struggle mainly derived from not being able to balance my understanding of both worlds - on one side I was told I had a disability

and on the other that I did not. I was able to do everything every other hearing individual was, but sometimes it would take more effort. Did the fact that it takes me three seconds longer to transfer and process spoken word, mean that I was disabled? Three seconds longer is the defining point? Perhaps I shouldn’t put it so blatantly as there’s more taken into consideration than that, however my brain works three times harder trying to process, filter and respond to the noises I am surrounded by every hour of the day - if you think you’re tired from listening, then believe me so am I! Now 24 years of age, and stumbling my way through adulthood I have

learnt so much about myself and also about how to approach people about me being deaf. I hope this has given you an insight on the difference between being deaf or Deaf, and broken any stereotypes you might held before - because although they’re easy to form, stereotypes are dumb. To me, my experience as a deaf individual means it takes energy, time and a whole lot of focus to hear whatever’s being said. Sometimes it means I’ll say a few more pardon me’s and what’s than the average joe but let’s be honest, New Zealanders are horrible mumblers or you talk way too fast. How do you guy’s keep up with yourselves? Is it the old “smile and wave” (aka nod) trick? If so, guess what, I use it too. Maybe we’re more alike than you think? Remember if you have any questions, ask - the worst that can be said is no!

Brand Value: Bringing Homegrown Products to the World

B

ernadette Soares is a Mum turned entrepreneur, who has successfully built up her company, Brand Value into a household name. Bernadette founded Brand Value 15 years ago by creating her first product on her stove top now her products grace the shelves of some of the top Salons and Spas in the world. Bernadette also founded the charity Let Your Light Shine, set up to empower individuals and transform communities. “My children were still quite young when I started my business in New Zealand. As much as I loved being a mum, I missed the creative side of working and needed a new challenge,” explains Bernadette. “Looking for a part time job after 11 years of being a stay at home mum was daunting and I faced the barriers of perception around experience and responsibilities. Setting up my own business became more of a necessity than an option. I tossed around a few ideas until I realised that I had a potential business sitting right in front of me!” For several years, Bernadette had been producing a natural hair removal product for her family and friends made on her own home stove from a family recipe passed down through generations. Bernadette improved the formula so it resonated with New Zealanders by adding Kiwifruit and Aloe Vera and before she knew it, her business was underway and growing in the local market. Brand Value encompasses well-known beauty brands, including: Natural Glow, Radiessence, Pharo, Enliven and BodEze. Keep your EYE on... What is your favourite piece of jewellery? I love my rose quartz ring, I bought it from a wonderful hippie, and took it to Brent Sutcliffe of Sutcliffe Jewellery in Parnell. I asked him to turn it into a beautiful ring and it’s set in diamonds with tiny hearts, reminding me of the love in my life, especially my children. Why crystals? Crystals have always been a big part of my life, my family’s life and everything I do. I have them near my computer when I’m working, I popped one in my son’s backpack when he went travelling, my children take them to their exams, and I truly believe their energies bring a sense of calm and healing to my world. What’s your favourite word? “Abundance” - I love the deeper meaning behind the word, that it’s not what you have; it’s what you are. Rather than superficial things, abundance represents so much more, it is your connection to each breath, how sensitive you are to every flicker of sensation and emotion in the body. It is your rootedness in the present moment, your open heart, how deeply moved you are by love every day, your willingness to embrace, it is kindness,it is you, and when nothing belongs to you, everything is yours. What is your favourite quote? That a thought is” just a thought” and that it becomes our state of being for as long as we hold it. Thankfully when we understand this, we can move swiftly into the state of being that we thrive for.

Where is your favourite place in New Zealand? I recently purchased a place in Matakana, where I planted four trees, each representing my four children. They remind me of what truly matters in life, and the importance of always staying grounded and rooted. My family and my children allow me to do that.

STEPHANIE WYBORN of Hyoumankind

S

teph is a mother of four, a successful entrepreneur and has now spread her butterfly wings to launch Hyoumankind. The sole purpose of this business is to improve the lives and wellbeing of others. Steph believes that beauty is not just about how we look, it’s how we feel, and it’s a philosophy that is weaved throughout her entire way of life. A woman of many layers, Steph reveals a few of them to us.

What perfume do you wear? Either Louis Vuitton Turbulences or Bvlgari Jasmin Noir - depending on what mood I’m in or how I want to feel that day.

If you could go anywhere in the world for a holiday, where would you go? It would depend on what type of holiday I need at the time! I love adventure, so I would love to do the Amankora Journey, and trek through Bhutan. However, if it is more of an intimate, and relaxing holiday then Greece. A remote villa on the coast of Santorini would be bliss!

What are your currently reading? Right now, I am reading ‘The World as I See It’ - a 1949 book by Albert Einstein. It contains articles, letters, and interviews as well as his personal opinions on the meaning of life. He talks about different energies, and the role they play in our life. The book begins by stating his profound faith in humanity itself, and his desire for a peaceful world of mutual helpfulness. 29

Minx

WE ASKED CUSHLA REED,THE VIBRANT STYLIST AND ENTREPRENEUR BEHIND MINX SHOES AND ACCESSORIES - AND ALL THOSE MINXY LADIES OUT THERE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT HERSELF AND HER BUSINESS. How did Minx start? I started working in my stepfather’s shoe manufacturing factory at the age of eleven. I learnt the trade through a very hands-on experience. My sister and I bought the factory off my Stepfather. We launched Minx in 2000. In 2007 we started manufacturing in China with some really good fair trading factories. It’s challenging but exciting. I’m always pleasantly surprised about their ability to help me make my designs a reality.

34

What made you want to be a designer? I’ve always been creative. I know what I like and what the market likes. I’m no Picasso, but something allows me to draw shoes and get that concept across. I can’t imagine not having some kind of design in my life. What makes Minx different? Minx is about trust. People trust the brand is right for their needs and that our style is on-trend. I recently posted ‘Oh look ladies, our new spring product’ on Facebook. We got 27,000 views! It appeals to so many ladies. I was shocked - in a really pleasant way. It means a lot to me. Minx is worn by a woman who’s an individual. She’s fun and she’s got attitude. These women are confident in their own skin. They like something bold and distinctive that make their personality stand out.

What’s your dream destination? This may surprise people, but my dream destination is my home. I live semi-rural. It’s my haven. When I head over the hills to Whitford, I start to unwind. I love that. It’s a privilege. What’s your wardrobe must-have? Obviously full of Minx! What’s your style? Independent, self confident, out there with attitude. That’s Minxy! Who’s your style icon? Iris Apfel - she’s my New York style icon! She’s the lady I want to be when I get older. She’s in her nineties and travels the world talking to people about confidence. She’s an extrovert but completely her own person. She’s so like my Minxy ladies!

The girl behind Tassels by J, Jessie Xie

THE TEAM AT EYE MAGAZINE WERE EXCITED TO SIT DOWN WITH THE INSPIRING 24-YEAR-OLD GIRL BOSS JESSIE FOR AN INTERVIEW ABOUT HERSELF AND HER JEWELLERY BUSINESS, TASSELS BY J. Who is the person behind Tassels by J? I am an Urban Planner by trade and Jewellery designer by fate. Call me typical but I covet everything all girls dream of - love, happiness, and all that glitz and glamour! I embrace locally made goods and I look up to all the NZ girl bosses making their grand mark on the world! What inspired you to start your business? It started with the covet for a pair of tassel earrings, however they were either not the right size, or colour, or it cost me an arm and a leg! One spare weekend I decided to make my own. Funnily enough, I had all this leftover material and thought, maybe there are other girls out there too who had the same problem? BOOYAH! I haven’t looked back since. What’s your future goals for Tassels by J? More ear candy! NZ gals have a distinctive style which I love and hope to share with the world. However, I will always keep Tassels by J a locally-made business in NZ. I’d also love to collaborate with other talented NZ ladies.

What advice do you have to others who want to start their own business? 1. Be passionate and give a shit. Give yourself some credit, you’ll be surprised how vital your own happiness shapes your business. I created Tassels by J to uplift my own confidence, it gave me something to strive for and a reason to work hard (for myself and not just as an Urban Planner). 2. Remember success comes in the form of failure too. 3. Don’t forget to help others. There are so many talented NZ girl bosses out there killing it and we are all supporting each other – I wouldn’t have been able to grow Tassels by J if it wasn’t for those extra helping hands. Jessie’s stunning range of earrings are subtle enough to match any outfit, while also enhancing your outfit, and your confidence perfect for all and any occasion.

A WEDDING STRAIGHT FROM A

fairytale

42

43

N

ever had a wedding garnered so much discussion and planning on dresses, bow ties, and anticipation for the day itself. And this was just for the guests! But on August 19th 2017, the day finally arrived. Lewis and Vanessa’s friends and family gathered at the Great Room at The Langham, Auckland to witness and celebrate in their wedding. Ladies in ball gowns and men dressed to the nines, everyone had upped their game for this lavish affair. The bride, the groom and the wedding party were excited that the day was finally here. How could they not be? A wedding is a special event, a day to remember, and there had been many late nights and long days going into planning. However, every friend had stepped up to play a part, and make the day what it was, showing the love for this special couple. Leading up the big day, Vanessa

44

celebrated her Hen’s Long Lunch at The Riverhead, whilst Lewis held his Stag Do at Kauri Bay Boomrock. Both the bride and groom arrived by Inflite chopper before spending the day with good food, great wine and plenty of laughs with their family and friends. Lewis and Vanessa were excited to be one of the last events held at The Langham before its rebranding to Cordis Hotel. It proved to be a perfect location, its luxurious facilities Langham catered to the wedding party’s every need. From deluxe suites, to The Great Room, every consideration was taken to ensure a smooth, and flawless day, from the professional photos in the morning to well into the night after the festivities. After being ushered into The Great Room, the stunning lighting completely took my breath away. The room was transformed in a fairytale, with beautiful floral arrangements that truly set the scene. Wild Co.’s Julia Clarke had designed intricate spherical structures

made from flowers at the entrance as well as striking floral arrangement designed into a purpose built round gold backdrop by Power Surge. The flowers were predominantly white with touches of blush pink, and soft, subtle, antique-inspired tones of pink. This included, alaska rose, quicksand - colombian rose, flowering pieris, double white hellebore, freesias, ranunculus white, ranunculus blush, white statice, rice flower, white anemones, and boronia white. All of which was personally overseen and curated by Julia, ensuring every petal was perfect resulting in the organic and wildly wonderful look that Wild Co are well-known for. Lewis and his groomsmen were looking impeccable in their Rembrandt suits - Bryan jacket, Avalon shirt, paired with Ferry trousers, a white linen pocket square and bow tie. They stood at the top awaiting the entrance of the bride, as we all were. The bridesmaid came in,

one by one, looking absolutely stunning in individually designed, exquisite John Zimmermann Couture dresses paired with bespoke Bexcia shoes, designed with crystals to effortlessly match each dress. And then, the moment arrived. Emma Stenbeck sang Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ as Vanessa floated down the aisle alongside her Father, Milton Green, in a breathtaking, bespoke Vinka wedding dress. From the intricate button details at the back, to the lace sleeves, and of course, that long and stunning train in dupion silk with a lace overlay. Every detail was perfect, down to her nails, which were done by Linda Leong of CigiSii, arguably the best nail artist in the country. It has become ciche to refer to a ‘glowing bride’ on her wedding day, but it couldn’t have been more true for Vanessa. Good friend of the bride and groom Mark Fraundorfer presided over the ceremony as the celebrant. It was short and sweet and filled with beautiful words, touching moments, rings, a kiss and finished with the wedding party departing to AC/DC’s ‘Thunder’ - a fitting way to end a one of a kind ceremony for a one of a kind couple. After the ceremony had ended, the guests filtered into The Great Room which was filled with beautiful tables, set for banquet with a dancefloor and a range of stunning gold leaf cakes by Sugarcoated with a beautiful wedding topper by Lavish Laser Design, who also designed the invites. Close friend Clive Weston was MC of the reception, and one of the esteemed speakers on the night. He performed a traditional sabrage on the night, slicing open a bottle of Bollinger in celebration of the newlyweds. As a gift from Vanessa, Lewis was serenaded by Soprano Emma Sloman, who left the whole room speechless with her incredible voice. It was a beautiful and romantic way to ease into the ceremony. A 3-course meal was served, with crayfish, inspired by Antoine’s, and beef wellington featuring on the menu. We laughed, cried, and cheered with all the speakers, as we enjoyed what seemed like endless food and wine. One of my favourites had to be the infamous Chef

of Antoine’s Tony Astle, who is not one to keep his opinions to himself! The night continued, with a romantic first dance reminding everyone why they were there. Laughter, selfies, dancing, a win by the All Blacks and some country filled the night. Vanessa danced the night away in her own bespoke Bexcia shoes, beautifully designed with Swarovski crystals. Celebrations continued well into the weekend with a post-wedding lunch held at Fireworks in Wynyard Quarter.Petra Rijnbeek performed while everyone enjoyed copious amount of cake and crayfish. “The day was a magical day and everything we could have dreamed - the love of our family and friends made our day,” says Vanessa. “The anticipation and anxiety that goes into planning a wedding is enormous and my one tip is check check check and get a good wedding planner!” Nicky Luis friend of Vanessa took care of this one on the day, ensuring everything went smoothly. And it did. I don’t think anyone could leave that room feeling anything but full of love, laughter and champagne, and feel truly blessed to be able to witness such true love - a fairytale wedding brought to life.

A cocktail of 14 different antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and hyaluronic acid to improve skin texture, hydration, elasticity and recover a healthy glow while reducing redness and brown spots. A course of 3 treatments at least 3 weeks apart is recommended for optimal results. After the full treatment, fibroblasts will be activated, promoting new collagen and elastin in the skin and delivering healthy looking, hydrated skin. Another effective course of treatment at FaceWorks is Dermaplaning. It safely and effectively removes the “peach fuzz” or fine hair on the face and upper neck, and gently and effectively exfoliates the skin. It leaves your skin looking and feeling polished and glowing.

And overall try and relax, book some body massages and drink calming tea leading up to your day. Good luck!

TO NATURALLY FRESHEN THE FACE WITHOUT LOOKING 'DONE'. 1. ELEVATE I use Botulinum Toxin to relax muscles that pull down on the brows. This freshens the eyes without that ‘quizzical’ appearance that you sometimes see when not done well. 2. ENHANCE ATTRACTIVE FEATURES I optimise the ‘triangle of beauty’ for a woman. Think broad cheekbones (no pillow cheeks allowed!) and a tapered, defined jaw-line; well hydrated, rather than overfilled lips. For men, you can’t go past a strong, square jaw-line. These results can be achieved with dermal fillers. A filler is a clear gel that can be used in a natural and safe way to lift facial contours.

3. CLEAR YOUR COMPLEXION Intense pulsed light reduces broken veins, rosacea and pigmentation. 4. FRESHEN SKIN TEXTURE Fraxel laser or Dermapen needling ‘damages’ the skin in a controlled way. This stimulates collagen and elastin growth, leading to a smoother, brighter complexion. 5. OPTIMISE SKIN CONDITION Optimise skin condition with quality cosmeceutical skin care from our experienced skin therapists.

Harness the power of multi-sensory event experiences

BY ADELE SYMONDS, GENERAL MANAGER MARKETING ANZPAC, STAGING CONNECTIONS

O

ne of the best parts of my role at Staging Connections is to be constantly at the forefront of live event trends. I’m fascinated by new solutions to engage attendees and deliver rich brand experiences that deliver long-lasting memories. I’ve seen a shift in the event industry, leaning towards multi-sensory, interactive and tactile experiences, because they make guests more receptive to your key messages. Our brains naturally crave unique, multi-sensory experiences – here’s some examples of how to immerse your guests. Open your eyes First impressions count! Make your event environment visually appealing, thought-provoking and interactive. Add energy with captivating set design, motion graphics, stunning lighting, precision projection and immersive styling. Make some noise Sound is crucial at an event. Choose your sound effects wisely, ensure your messages are heard and consider where during the program your audience should laugh, sing, dance, cry, applaud, or take a break. To touch is to connect Tactile elements like props, furniture, centrepieces or other physical objects are effective touch-tactics you can use to leave an impression. Touch screens, games, live-polls, interactive presentations, gesture control and apps are great technologies to make a real connection.

56

Have good taste It’s well-known that food is often at the centre of events. Don’t leave guests disappointed – style your menu to be a highlight of the occasion! Delight your guests’ taste buds and they will be singing your praises long after the last dish has been cleared. Show and smell Scent is a powerful way to evoke emotion and trigger memories. Try some simple ambient scenting solutions like pungent floral displays or foliage, scented invitations, menus or room fragrances to enhance your theme. Start creating your own Activated senses can trigger memory, inspire, excite and create a powerful platform for learning and engagement. We were given five senses – why not appeal to all of them? By incorporating sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, your event will be much more memorable and successful. Everyone will want to be on your invite list! About Staging Connections Staging Connections is the Asia-Pacific’s leading audio-visual and events production company. They have delivered flawless and unforgettable corporate events and conferences, gala dinners, celebrations and outdoor events for over 30 years.

Smaller receptions with non-exclusive use of the Lodge might choose The Den, regal, soft and warm with silver and golds, slate floors and lush New Zealand designed wool rugs. A Floral Finale at Fashion Week

NEW ZEALAND BRIDAL DESIGNER TRISH PENG MADE HEADLINES AT NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK EARLIER THIS YEAR WITH A STUNNING FLORAL DRESS AS HER FINAL PIECE.

B

ased in LA, the Kiwi designer is well-known for allowing brides-to-be to choose a current design, mix and match features or request bespoke bridal designs. However, it was her one-off piece for Fashion Week that had everyone talking. For Fashion Week, she created a unique masterpiece, the

ultimate bridal couture dress for the New Zealand Weddings Magazine Collection Show. The entire dress was made out of fresh, New Zealand flowers that were elegantly pieced together. The close-fitting bodice was contoured out of tiny white blooms as the dress dramatically cascaded into large blush and pale pink flowers at the train, entwined with rose gold foliage. “Flowers in all their feminine forms have inspired my latest collection,” explains Trish. “For me, this gown is the ultimate expression of bridal beauty. The dress and the bouquet are brought to life together, in a fresh and stunningly beautiful way.” The dress, costing an estimated $20,000 to create, was the result of a collaboration between Trish and the National Flower Promotion Group who promote and proudly celebrate New Zealand locally grown, high quality flowers and foliage. Assisting Trish were several senior floristry students from the Manukau Institute of Technology who spent over 100 hours working with Trish to bring her vision alive. The gown features 12 different types of flowers, including carnations, hellebores, roses, and chrysanthemums. The gown was carefully created, pieced together and sent down the runway for a fleeting glimpse of beauty, only existing for just three days out of water.

Simunovich Olive Estate BRACU, SIMUNOVICH OLIVE ESTATE’S FINE DINING DESTINATION RESTAURANT WAS A ONE HAT AWARD WINNER AT THE 2017 CUISINE GOOD FOOD AWARDS.

78

A

mongst stiff national competition, Bracu’s excellence is founded on the extraordinary quality olives, extra virgin olive oils, and fresh seasonal produce grown on site, and utilised by Head Chef, Logan Clark, in preparing elegant, well designed meals. A pleasant forty minute drive from Auckland’s centre into the lush rural green scenery, the Simunovich Olive Estate is draped over the picturesque hills and valleys of the Bombay Hills. The sunlit slopes are reminiscent of those on the island of Brac in Croatia from which Ivan Simunovich, founder of the Olive Estate, originally migrated. Planting their first olive trees in 1999, today Simunovich Olive Estate is New Zealand’s largest privately owned olive grove. Ivan’s children, Peter and Donna now operate Simunovich Olive Estate. They carry their father’s legacy forward and have grown a sustainable olive oil production business which is carbon

positive. In 2002 the Olive Estate pressed their first extra virgin olive oil. With the next harvest in 2003 they launched their Extra Virgin Olive Oil into the marketplace. Now a sought after award winning base product from which a range of premium quality subsidiary products are manufactured on the Estate, the 336 acre Bombay property has become a fixture of the Franklin community and sources the majority of its staff locally, providing training and development for over 50 people. In 2002, with their first harvest of extra virgin olive oil, the Simunovich family added a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified skincare laboratory, and built a manufacturing plant for Olive Natural Skincare products. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, extra virgin olive oil is considered an effective component in neutralising skin damaging free radicals. Olive oil also helps skin regulate its natural moisturising systems. In 2005 the Simunovichs introduced their Olive Baby range with products to bless and keep beautiful and safe the delicate skin of infants. Nowadays Simunovich Olive Skincare products are popular globally. Simunovich Olive Estate won their first award for Extra Virgin Olive Oil in 2005, and was able to take advantage

of the opening Asian export market. By 2012 they’d evolved their Olive Leaf Extract to further enhance their natural skincare offerings, and the Olive Skincare range expanded into Australia. In 2017 the Olive Skincare range became BioGro NATRUE certified, reflecting their commitment to natural skincare or to certified natural skincare. (only certain products are organic certified). Bracu Fine Dining All these beautiful oil varieties led the family to open their award winning signature restaurant, Bracu, in 2006 placing it on the fine dining destination map. In 2016 Logan Clark became Head Chef. Eating from his kitchen is an experience not to be missed. Serving a la carte and exquisite degustation menus designed to make the palate sing, Bracu’s offerings count among the best the country has to offer with the added distinct advantage of surrounding peaceful green olive groves. Bracu is an atmospheric experience, a lavish, palate-enchanting experience of luxury created from in-season produce, most of which is grown on the estate.

Bracu – Wedding and Events In 2010, complementing a wellrounded range of products and services, Simunovich Olive Estate opened Bracu Pavilion, an exclusive purpose built, all-weather wedding and functions venue offering intimate luxury amongst the romantic olive groves. Loaded with classic charm, the three state-of-the-art wedding facilities come with the services of onsite wedding experts to help couples create their perfect day, from food choices to seating, and decoration. Beretta at Bracu 2014 saw Beretta, the 500 year old Italian gun manufacturer, join with Bracu, to form Beretta at Bracu. Beretta at Bracu specialises in activity and shooting experiences such as claybird shooting, air rifle and air pistol target shooting, archery and knife throwing. It has become enormously popular with businesses looking to entertain clients or arrange team building experiences, but the possibilities are endless with some celebrating special occasions such as birthdays and stag or hen parties. They’re unique opportunities in a unique environment.

Harvest and Processing All olives are picked and processed on the same day, and Simunovich Olive Estate oils are cold pressed to maintain their original flavours and nutritional benefits. Being processed entirely on the Estate means they have complete control from picking to packaging. This is a process unique in New Zealand. History of the Olive Six thousand years ago the Mediterranean olive was a wild bush growing naturally in the stoney grounds of Persia (modern Iran, Palestine and Syria). Many believed the bush was a gift from the gods, a heaven sent fruit that yielded an oil of mythical standing. The Greeks took the olive as their own, cultivating it in the windswept lands bordering the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas and invented more efficient extraction processes. The term

80 22

Useful tip: Add a pinch of salt to olive oil to enhance flavour.

‘virgin’ olive oil related to the fact that only virgin girls were permitted to cultivate the fruit. Today the term refers to acidity levels in the oil. The Greeks shared their knowledge and skills across Southern Europe. In Spain, grafting methods were discovered, resulting in bigger fruit with higher oil content. It signalled the beginning of a love affair with the medicinal and therapeutic powers of olives which today continues at the Simunovich Olive Estate, where their trees mature five times faster than their European counterparts. Kiwi magic? Great location? Simunovich Olive Estate likes to think it’s a bit of both.

A Conversation with Patric Seng PATRIC SENG WAS 33 YEARS OLD WHEN HE FULFILLED HIS MODELING DREAM AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, BUT IT HASN’T BEEN AN EASY RIDE.

F

rom being told he wasn’t “model material” to now walking the catwalk in the 2016 New York Fashion Week and started his own modeling agency, Bintang Models and Management, in 2013. For Patric, it’s all about the connection. He’s as passionate about the people he meets and works with as he is about the fashion industry itself. It was his love for the industry that inspired him to start Bintang Models... How did you first get into modeling? I started modeling when I was 17 years old and living in Malaysia. Many people commented that I had the height and the right look to get into the modeling industry, so I plucked up the courage and applied to a few agencies. I was signed with a modeling agency in Kuala Lumpur where I was featured in a few tv commercials and various magazine such as V MAG, Spotlight. I’ve also been fortunate to work with some amazing brands such as Calvin Klein, Thierry Mugler and Shu Uemura while living in Malaysia. What makes Bintang Models different from other model agencies? To be frank, Bintang Models was built around this idea to combat tiresome industry standards. Standards that plague larger agencies not just nationally but on a global level as well. We offer a platform that is more ‘‘collective’’ than agency in nature; a family that supports and nurtures development. We care about the mental and physical state of a model, right down to their voice and opinion. New Zealand is like a petri-dish where ideas cultivate and grow, but the scene here is still playing catchup. Representation and diversity is just one of the issues, which is bizarre considering how multicultural our beautiful country is. We understand diversity is not a ‘fixed’ point or to be waved around like a totem. It’s truly important to us.

become a better model. Ideally, you will find an agency that understands your value and strength. Another important factor to consider is to make sure you have a great fitness and healthy diet plan, keep your skin hydrated and hair looking good and be outspoken!

What advice do you have for models just starting out? I will say, always do your homework prior to approaching any agency. When you find the agency you feel most comfortable with, ask how they can help or guide you to

What are your top three tips for taking a good photo? Good composition, Good coffee and Great vibes! The fundamental is to understand what or who you are shooting, always put your best foot forward.

YourFix TV MONIQUE BRADLEY’S EYES TWINKLE WHEN SHE SPEAKS ABOUT YOURFIX TV. “THE WHOLE VISION IS ABOUT GIVING EVERYBODY A VOICE, FROM THE SMALLEST PERSON OR BRAND, RIGHT THROUGH TO THE BIGGER BRANDS ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET THEIR MESSAGE DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE.”

B

radley, together with her colleague Pete Ward, runs YourFix TV, a production house that streams live shows across the social media platform. They call it social broadcasting - and it’s touted as the next big thing in televised viewing. “We use channels like YouTube and Facebook to get live broadcasts to people’s phones or computers. That’s how people get their TV fix these days,” says Ward.

“The joy of ‘live’ shows,” Bradley enthuses, “is that it’s interactive. During a broadcast I take questions through social media, like a news feed, from people around the world. It’s like having a conversation.” YourFix TV’s live broadcasts reach anywhere from 40,000 to one million people. “It’s real because we’re right there, in the present moment. You’ve got to be totally focused. And that’s really exhilarating,” says Bradley. Top shows? There’s a show called ‘Health Bites’ and a popular show called ‘Cooking with Ray’ (Ray McVinnie) that’s streamed live from his kitchen. Then there’s ‘Easy Living with Monique Bradley’ - about food, living and lifestyle. There’s a digital marketing show teaching people how to promote their own business. “Oh...and Pete and I do a comedy show over a glass of wine called ‘The FriYay Show!’” Bradley laughs.

“We’ve gathered a great community of people around the world and we celebrate their success.” “We’re working on shows about money and business, style and fashion. We have shows about beauty and skin care, careers and recruitment and real estate. We have a designated rugby league show,” adds Ward. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, tune in to one of their exciting new shows hovering on the horizon. “We have ‘The Love and Intimacy Show,’” says Ward with a wink. “And shows coming up that we can’t talk much about.” Bradley leans forward and whispers, “It’s a dating show.” She laughs delightedly. “A lot of the stuff we do is about joy, empowerment and education. It’s about helping people have a happier, healthier and easier life.”

City living isn’t for everyone. Anonymous roads where your only view is rooftops. Congested streets where it’s a battle to park. Beaches you need to drive to. And that’s before you consider the high prices of City homes, let alone the inflated cost of a flat white. An apartment at The Reserve in Long Bay avoids these stresses and extra costs of City living, while giving you the best of Auckland. Architecturally designed spaces, many with ocean views, give you a sense of luxury and freedom. Getting where you want to go is easy, whether it’s to the shops, eateries or neighbouring bays. And right on your doorstep, you’ve got the beautifully maintained Long Bay playground, large Regional Park and endless white sandy beach. With easy access to the CBD by motorway or Northern Expressway by bus, The Reserve offers you the all-round Auckland life you’ve dreamed of, at a fraction of the price.

MEET DONNA BALASOGLOU, ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED, PASSIONATE AND CREATIVE STYLISTS THE TEAM AT EYE HAVE EVER MET.

D

onna studied at Chelsea Art School in London before starting her career with the luxury brand L.K.Bennett. Now living in New Zealand and sharing her passion for styling with New Zealanders, we sit down with Donna from Donnabellab, to ask three questions we were dying to know more about. What inspires you? Grace Coddington, the ex-creative director of Vogue and fashion icons such as Kate Moss, Sophia Loren and Bridget Bardot are also big influences. They are real women who aren’t afraid to show their feminine side. I’m also inspired by the beauty that can be seen in something old and worn and turning it into something glamorous. I find new inspirations every day. Where has your business as a stylist taken you? As well as working across the UK, I’ve been involved in projects which have taken me to Paris. This is a very special place for me. I love the elegance, the food, the streets, the buildings, the fashion, and the way women are so chic! This was also where I first discovered my love of interiors.

Now, I’m fortunate enough to live and work in beautiful New Zealand! Here I get to meet so many wonderful and interesting people from all around the world.

When I can help my clients achieve their personal goals or transform their special events, it’s extremely satisfying and rewarding.

A client wants to use all your services from personal styling to event styling - how do you begin? To start with, we meet for a good old chat over coffee so I can get to know them. We then dig down into their current challenges to establish their goals. With this information, I put a proposed plan together and work closely with them, evaluating and tweaking as we go, ensuring they get the best experience possible.

Whether you want to transform your wardrobe, re-design your workspace, have your wedding or special event styled to perfection, you can be sure that Donna will execute a plan that will leave you with beautifully successful results, and memories to last a lifetime.

any of us stepping out of our comfort zones to learn how to drive faster… no, just kidding, to learn how to use vehicles better! Most of the ladies at the course learnt to drive in the 70’s and 80’s and cars have dramatically changed since then. Most of what we learnt is irrelevant for modern vehicles. For example, where to put your hands so the airbag does not send your hand through your head. Mazda GM Glenn Harris greeted us left us in the care of Mike Eady and his TrackTime team. We learnt to brake at speed, did speed tests around cones and a few hot laps. We were lucky

enough to drive in some amazing cars, including the Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, CX-5 and CX-9; with the hot laps using a Mazda6 TT Diesel and RX-8. It has to be said this was one of the best days. The sheer excitement on the ladies faces at the end was enough to know how much everyone loved it! The event can be fully customised to suit your requirements and pricing for a half or full-day drive experience is available on application and they can personalise each element to suit. This was an awesome team building and confidence building experience at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. For more information go to tracktime.co.nz

Vash Verma Ray White

IF YOU WANT TO BUY OR SELL PROPERTY IN SOUTH & EAST AUCKLAND, REAL ESTATE AGENT VASH VERMA MAY BE THE PROPERTY HERO YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

W

e sat down with him to find out his secrets to listing and selling property with Ray White.

You joined the Mangere Bridge team earlier this year. How have you found the experience so far? I have found working at Ray White has been the best step in my career. The family-like office environment means there is always plenty of support and everyone is always willing to help. What have been some of your biggest achievements with Ray White? Maintaining record prices for properties while the market was flat earlier this year was something I was very proud of. On a personal level, it’s consistently having vendors give me 10 out of 10 in our customer satisfaction surveys and the high number of referrals. Why would you recommend purchasing a property in south & east Auckland? For homes buyers, it would be the fine selection of homes under the Home Start grant threshold. I frequently sell 3 bedroom

properties renovated to a high standard for under $500,000, which represents the good value for money on properties in the area. For investors, it’s the low entry price and good rental returns as South Auckland is a high-demand rental area. There is also the added benefit of good capital gains. How do you stand out as a real estate agent in your field? One of the ways I stand out is through my online presence via social media. This enables me to reach a wider audience of potential vendors or buyers. I like to do things different to the norm with marketing which makes people take notice. What are some of the highlights of the year in regards to property? Seeing vendors happy with the outcome is always pleasing, as well as our high levels of customer satisfaction. Ray White Mangere Bridge was also recognised as Loan Markets top referrer for the Auckland region, which is great, as it means many people are finding a way to finance their new home. Although the market volume across Auckland has dropped we have had growth as a team and continue to year after year.

Harness what’s yours with Skysolar THE SUN IS OUR LARGEST AND MOST ABUNDANT SOURCE OF FREE ENERGY, AND SKYSOLAR HAVE BEEN HARNESSING THAT ENERGY INTO NEW ZEALAND HOMES SINCE 2013.

T

he kiwi owned and operated company acts on the firm belief that solar power is the way forward, creating zero emission energy to power your home and ensuring the preservation of New Zealand’s wonderful natural environment for future generations to come. Starting out on Auckland’s North Shore, after four years operating SkySolar is now available nationwide. The team is made up of highly trained and trustworthy professionals spread across a wide range of regions throughout the North and South Islands. Solar installations are different for every household, and the team at SkySolar provide a full service from sales, to design, to install – all to best suit the individual. The benefits of powering your home with solar energy are endless. With zero emission energy, solar panels are not only beneficial for the environment around us, they also provide an

economically friendly solution to cutting energy costs and better managing your power consumption. SkySolar also specialises in larger commercial installations customised to suit your business, meaning you can generate enough power from free zero-emission solar energy to power your entire establishment. By adding solar panels to your home or business, the energy radiated by the sun can be directly absorbed from your roof or building – even on cloudy days. This being your primary energy source, any extra power required will then come from the grid. Correspondingly when you have an excess of energy this power does not go to waste, and is instead exported to the grid resulting in a more pleasant monthly power bill. Additionally, SkySolar offers solar panel options for off-grid locations, allowing you access to renewable power in the remotest of locations. The off-grid options are also a popular eco-conscious solution for regular

With SkySolar customers can take power into their own hands, managing and maintaining better use of energy. You can still make the most of the sun this winter, by shifting to a renewable source of energy, which benefits both your electricity expenditure as well as the environment which surrounds us.

THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED

THE APARTMENT

that eye altered

THE PROCESS OF RENOVATING CAN OFTEN BE TIRING AND TIME CONSUMING BUT WITH THE RIGHT PLAYERS INVOLVED, IT IS ALMOST A PLEASURABLE EXPERIENCE.

O

ur apartment kitchen is 95% completed, transforming a white typical apartment style bench and cabinets with average appliances into an amazing luxury kitchen. Design, Join and Build (DBJ) have been absolutely fantastic with communication keeping us abreast of all the progress and even using facetime to show us some of the updates live. DBJ are quality cabinetmakers and the company is built on repeat business and personal referrals, with capabilities that include architecturally designed homes, renovations, alterations, additions and restorations. They take a partnering approach - developing relationships with all parties involved to ensure that the goals of the clients are met or exceeded to ensure an outcome which is within a budget that is realistic and achievable. Paul is a pleasure to work with and is committed to giving every client great service. Overseeing the progress is dedicated Kitchen Designer Mal Corboy, ensuring his bespoke design for a dark sophisticated look with brass metal accents takes shape. Mal’s experience of 25 years and his passion for design and ability to understand the client’s’ wishes while creating spaces that are visually beautiful, is transforming this kitchen from average to sophisticated. He has managed to make a small space look enormous. The Laminex finished timber veneer supplied by Laminex NZ is looking amazing and very sophisticated and the non-porous architectural caesarstone countertop also supplied by Laminex is beautiful. We love the fact that Laminex use environmentally friendly products

38

wherever possible. Their belief in sustainable building practises to reduce the carbon footprint also adds value to their brand. One of my favourite parts about the kitchen is the bespoke, tailor made, kitchen organisational drawers by Blum. They have a quiet close and prevent kitchen drawers from becoming cluttered. You don’t need to have a designer kitchen to fit these in your home - every household needs this clever and aesthetically pleasing way of organising. The caesarstone bench has been cut and shaped by Architectural Stone again, impeccable service. We also have some stunning taps from Paterson that give a real wow factor to the kitchen! Once again, Mal has worked to ensure everything flows and the design looks perfect. Mal suggested the Schweigen extractor fan as it’s the best in the world. Schweigen is one of New Zealand’s most innovative kitchen and bathroom air extraction manufacturers and the designers of New Zealand’s most efficient silent rangehoods and bathroom fans. It is so quiet and has huge power to take cooking smells away – we highly recommend. Also in the process of being installed is a water purifier with instant hot and cold water from Parex. The clever induction system has made cooking so much easier. The double oven and bench top is all Neff appliances (available at Kitchen and Things) – a top microwave and grill oven while on the bottom is a oven that folds under itself for more room. I’m able to cook picture perfect meals with the speed and ease of a microwave with Kitchen Things

revolutionary range of combination microwave wall ovens. Combining everything we love about ovens with the best features of a microwave, the modern home simply wouldn’t be complete without one of these stunning appliances. As specialists in European brand names, their combi microwave wall ovens embody style and precision engineering. We have used it once and it has to be said – amazing! Making your dream home should be an experience

WHEN IT COMES TO KITCHEN AND INTERIOR DESIGN, MAL CORBOY IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE INDUSTRY. WE ASKED FOR HIS TOP INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR PROJECT GOES SMOOTHLY.

1. Always use one designer for your project. This ensures you get consistency and flow throughout, rather than a mix of ideas. 2. While many people tend to use lighter colour schemes, don’t be afraid to utilise beautiful, darker colours. They can bring a sense of warmth to a large space and make your project stand out amongst others. 3. When it comes to furniture, it is always best to use bespoke or custom made pieces. Not only are they unique to you, but they can also better meet your design needs. 4. If you are looking to add a little drama to a room, a soft furnishing can help achieve this. Don’t hesitate to add a throw rug, cushion, or curtains to help elevate the space. malcorboy.com

Seaside summer staple in St Heliers ALTHOUGH BEACHSIDE RESTAURANTS AND CAFES IN THE LIKES OF MISSION BAY AND TAKAPUNA ARE OFTEN RAVED ABOUT, THERE IS ANOTHER HOT SPOT THAT MANY PEOPLE OVERLOOK.

S

t Heliers, a quiet yet beautiful suburb sitting at the end of the eastern bays is the home of Annabelles, a staple community restaurant with a long history. Opening in 1998, this establishment has remained a crowdpleaser, while surrounding restaurants, cafes and bars have come and gone. Being surrounded by the sea is enough to give everyone a craving for seafood and Annabelles delivers above and beyond. Be sure to try the fish of the day that is delivered fresh daily. With summer just around the corner, the time is perfect to indulge in some wonderful seafood. Right now it is scallop season and Annabelles have added classic whitebait fritters from the west coast to the menu for a limited time. Other offerings from the ocean include the flavourful live crayfish, which boast unique flavours to satisfy even the most veteran of seafood connoisseurs. There are also fresh, juicy scallops from Whangamata and oysters from Clevedon, the best way to start your eating experience. If you are a fan of red meat,

54

Annabelles is the perfect place to go. At this year’s Beef and Lamb awards, Annabelles was one of only 25 restaurants in Auckland to receive an Excellence award, continuing their 12-year streak. This recognises the superior taste, composition and technique in all beef and lamb dishes on the menu. Highlights are the eye fillet and the juicy and tender lamb shank, which are sourced from silver fern farms and are prepared with care and precision, served with fresh and flavourful accompaniments. A stand out exotic dish on the menu at Annabelles is Bi Bim Bap a stone rice bowl. Vegetarian, chicken or beef with a side of kimchi. To compliment the delectable offerings on the plate, Annabelles has a thoughtful and complimentary drinks list which sources the best in local wines and beers. If you want to take a journey east to the beach this summer, be sure to stop into Annabelles for the perfect highlight on a sunny day. w

Dantes Pizzeria… for Pasta? I SIT AT A WOODEN TABLE, DRINK IN HAND, AMIDST THE HUSTLE OF PONSONBY CENTRAL. THE RUSTIC SURROUNDINGS AND BUZZ OF THE AREA, COMBINED WITH THE WAFTING SMELLS OF WOOD FIRED PIZZA AND TOMATOES TAKE ME TO A EUROPEAN MARKETPLACE.

O

f course, I am at Dante’s Pizzeria, the popular eatery that has become infamous for it’s delicious and authentic Southern Italian cuisine. However, I am not here for pizza. What has brought me here is the lure of their new pasta menu, with favourites from Naples and Southern Italy. Since it’s launch 12 years ago, Dante’s has moved from its original Kumeu location to settle in Ponsonby Central and Takapuna’s Fortieth & Hurstmere. Both modern market lanes, they reflect the philosophy that Dante’s Founder & Co-Owner Kevin Morris hopes to bring to New Zealanders. The pizzas are all made using a mix of family recipes and traditional Napoli traditions, and have resulted in a cult following for the Italian restaurant. And so, for Dante’s to veer into pasta, Kevin and the team wanted to ensure that each dish could be served with as much care, and attention to detail. “The time and care we take into making our pizzas, is the same route we take with our pasta. The flour, the tomatoes, and many of the recipes come from a similar region in Naples, Southern Italy,” says Kevin. “We make our egg pasta daily - it’s that fresh. By using a very unique Italian pasta flour we found when we were experimenting, using our special pasta machine, which was custom-made in Modena Italy, it mixes the dough in a certain way to ensure the gluten isn’t overly developed, giving us that perfect Italian bite.” “No one at a street-food level is producing pasta to this quality. It is usually the bigger restaurants and five star hotels that put this much effort in, to produce this texture, colour and flavour because there are so many variables needed to produce pasta to this level.” I was lucky enough to try the delicious Pappardelle Salsiccia. A signature dish of Southern Italy, it was a sumptuous slow cooked ragu of pork and fennel sausage mince, chili, and red wine in a San Marzano tomato sauce. Bellissimo! “We are known for being the leaders for our pizza Napoletana. Now, we want to be the leaders for our fresh pasta. And I believe currently we are,” Kevin says proudly.

hey are set apart from other roasters by their own authentic style, doing things just that little bit extra special. Last year Havana Coffee Works founder Geoff Marsland released a book co-written with Tom Scott telling the astonishing story of this pioneering company’s success and how it’s become the unpretentious potion for the people. Situated in the Capital, the Havana Coffee Works factory is a stunning avocado green art deco building that resembles something frenetic, fantastic, unpredictable and lively. The 1955 Buick parked outside is a symbolic reminder of their connection with Cuba which is a close 20 year relationship. There is definitely a cool mystique about the Havana Coffee Works but no mystery. They have an open door policy where people are welcome to come and touch and smell the coffee whilst soaking up the vibe with a delicious espresso, all roasted with love and music on site.

For those who are interested in the roasting process, Havana Coffee Works hot air roaster is the greenest smart roaster on the planet. It uses 80% less energy and releases 80% less emissions into the environment. With over 400 coffee roasters in NZ creating emissions this big green investment in sustainability also sets them apart. Havana source beautiful organic coffees and rebel origin coffees through their own Real Trade relationships and through Fairtrade. W

orking and travelling in Asia and Europe, Chef William Chung became inspired by traditional recipes and techniques. While working as a Head Chef in Primrose Hill, London, William had the opportunity to express himself by creating modern food and bringing a Kiwi slant to Asian cuisine. Coming home he saw sameness in the local restaurants, menus presented like carbon copies of each other. The mission behind The Big Fish Eatery was simple: to serve delicious, affordable food using the best of seasonal produce. Pan Asian is the ideology that draws from the culinary diversity of that great continent. Big Fish Eatery offers dishes from Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. Each dish is created honouring the traditions, cooking styles and the flavours of its home country. The restaurant is a business that is built on its reputation for value and variety; simple but special with a great family environment. Order the Pad Thai and you will be delighting again in the flavour of the dish you first discovered in old Chiang Mai. Try the NZ salmon dish William created for an explosion of flavour - salmon cooked to a perfect medium, served with house made honey soy mustard, mandarin salad and crushed cashew nuts. The Drunken Noodle dish is another chef’s popular speciality. The wine list features Yealands PGR, an aromatic blend of Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. This wine is perfectly designed to compliment Pan Asian food. The Big Fish Eatery at 710 Great South Road is no secret now. The atmosphere is alive, vibrant and fragrant. On a Friday lunch time and you will be lucky to find a table without having a reservation. It is the same on Friday and Saturday nights. All the dishes are made to order and are available for takeaway and delivery.

“Welcome to the most beautiful tropical paradise”, with nearly perfect temperature, delicious food and fantastic accommodation, Le Méridien Bora Bora was one of the most astonishing places I have ever travelled to. The magic started the moment we could see Bora Bora from our plane. Our accommodation was an overwater bungalow featuring an astonishing glass floor. As a welcoming gift, we were provided with champagne, a hat for him and pareo for me. The moment I stepped onto our private terrace and jumped into the clear blue water, I never wanted to leave. Offering a range of high end bars and restaurants, Le Méridien has it all. Le Tipanie Restaurant offers a continental buffet for breakfast and modern authentic local cuisine for dinner. For those wanting a quick snack in the afternoon, The Pool Bar has the freshest coconut I have ever tasted! Miki Miki Bar is perfect if you’re in search of a bar that will welcome you with a full menu of cocktails with idyllic views. Te Ava Restaurant is on the beach with the most divine tuna sashimi! For a good wine selection and tapas, Hapaina Wine Bar will not disappoint. The Bora Bora Turtle Center is located in the lagoon where you can learn about and swim with marine turtles! Le Méridien was an experience of a lifetime, it is without a doubt that we will be coming back to this heavenly paradise soon!
