DOUBLETREE BY HILTON KARAKA COVER SHOOT PERFECT SUMMER DAY TO GET ‘THE SHOT’ Shooting for a magazine cover is always controversial, as we want to showcase the model and clothes but also the location, so it’s always a question of, which will take center stage? We were very lucky to be shooting on a perfect summer day in front of the brand-new DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka, surrounded by a team of professionals to get ‘the shot’. Just 30 minutes south of Auckland City, and in the idyllic destination of Karaka, DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka is the perfect getaway location for friends, lovers, or even that all important ‘me’ time. The investment into DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka will help raise the world-class Karaka experience to another level. The hotel features 120 guest rooms, including four spacious suites, a restaurant and bar, a fully equipped gym, a pool and two meeting rooms. In addition, guests have full access to the Karaka Pavilion, which encompasses four meeting and event spaces that can accommodate events from 12 to 600 people.

Because Karaka is surrounded by some of the best farmland in the region, one would hope for a restaurant that has a farm-to-table ethos and a chef who knows how to do it. Enter celebrity chef Mark Southon, who is famously known from the French Cafe, O’Connell St Bistro and hosted The Cafe. His new restaurant offering is Ethereal Artisan Kitchen. Southon has worked with the area’s farmers to create a menu of produce as locally sourced as it gets - you’ll probably drive past the farms where your dinner is being sourced en route to the hotel. Guests can even handpick their chosen cut of meat from the visible meat-locker before it’s cooked for you — that’s some VIP vibes. At the accompanying HorseShoe Bar, guests can enjoy moreish snacks, gourmet platters and delicious cocktails. During the summer months, guests are welcome to sip their cocktail poolside.

Our models for this shoot were the gorgeous Hannah Edge from Bintang models and Colin Mathura-Jeffree who needs no direction in front of the camera. Hannah and Colin took center stage with a Maserati Ghibli Trofeo. The brand-new DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka took centre stage on our cover, complemented by our models and Maserati, all bringing our cover to life. Our head stylist. Donna Balasoglou, chose outfits from designer Jakob Carter, Modes Eventwear and Hami Fashion to create the perfect look and vibe for each setting. From cocktails in the HorseShoe Bar, swimming in the pool and lounging in the rooms, the models were dressed to impress! Thank you to the team who brought this image to life. ALWAYS FACE THE LIGHT COLIN MATHURA-JEFFREE TURNS 50.

1 2

How does it feel to be turning 50? I’m really fearless about age and think it’s a privilege so I’m delighted to turn 50 this year.

How have you been celebrating? Life’s a party so I intend to really enjoy myself. I take the time to spend with my brother Eric and sister Kathleen and family and really have enormous fun with my best friends who accept me for who I am not where I’ve been seen.

3 4

What do you have planned? I intend to have a party toward summer. Something really swish. Besides a party on the actual day. Something posh.

Do you have any birthday rituals or traditions? Yes indeed. Lots of cake. I secretly spoil myself. I miss my Mum Rosalie and Dad Clifford, so I’ll sit in the garden and chat to them about everyone’s secrets and tell them I love them.

5

What was your very first modelling gig? I was discovered officially to “model” walking up Queen Street. Ironically, I had already done 2 editorial photo sessions. I remember having a shoot for RTR Magazine and in the Herald on the same day. I ate so many coffee bean chocolates my eyes were buzzing.

6

When was the first time you saw your face on an ad/cover of a magazine while you were walking on a street? I think my knockout hit moment was in India. I had done a huge editorial session with some hilarious (bitchy) models on a petit island in the Arabian Sea. Upon return to Mumbai on a midnight flight from Auckland, in my chauffeured car late at night I looked up at these billboards and suddenly realised that I was on the cover! I rushed to the nearest luxury Hotel Book Shop and bought a few copies and called my mum and told her I made it. You would’ve thought I was hotter than vindaloo!.

7

The designer who changed your career? Many designers. Especially here in New Zealand. They took a chance on me and nurtured me early in my career. I’m eternally thankful to Grant Robertson from Rocket Man , Pam Doll of PAMELIA, Gail Thompson from Cut Above, Feline, State of Grace, House of Black, Planet Tonga, Working Style, Manahan Menswear, Pacific Sisters, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace.

8 9 10 11 12 13 14

Your life motto? Never live in regret.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Be happy and be kind. People purposefully won’t want to know you’re good at heart but don’t let their shade eclipse your light. Great tip for looking your best in photos? Always face the light.

Your most prized fashion possession? I have a lot of bijoux. I’m a sentimental lad. I have some rings gifted to me from an Arabic Princess I hold very dear. What do you think is a common misperception about you? I’m 30. My waist is 30. My IQ is 30. What’s your beauty mantra? Drink lots of water. Accept compliments. Give compliments. Get a great hairdresser.

Your style guru? I have many. I love local designers and stylists. So many of my friends influence my fearlessly wild taste in fashion. I’ve been named worst dressed and voted best dressed so obviously I’m enjoying myself.

15

How do you stay physically and mentally healthy? By being relaxed and honest. I’m a very social person but I love my own space. If the world gets too much for me I go to a bookshop and read about someone else’s messy adventure. If I cry it’s from laughing.

16 17

If you could give teenage Colin advice before he embarks on his career, what would it be? Ask for more money....you know you love money and they know you’re worth it. Your most admirable quality? I look for the best in every situation. I’m far from perfect but I think I’m a little bit alright.

GAIL ELLIOTT THE INSIGHT OF HER FASHION PHILOSOPHY What inspired you to become a fashion designer? I was extremely fortunate to enjoy a very successful 24 year career as a model in the late 80s and 90s in which I developed an enormous interest in fashion and came to appreciate quality, luxury and the power of how beautiful clothing can make a woman feel. From a young age at around thirteen years old, I remember saving my pocket money and how I loved to go into Chelsea Girl in London to buy my clothing. Having worked with all the major fashion designers, photographers, magazine editors, stylists, models, hair stylists and makeup artists as a model for so many years, I began to feel the need to express my learnings, fashion thoughts and feelings creatively. I’d walked the international runways in Paris, Milan, London, and New York season upon season for every major designer you can name - Karl Largerfeld, Chanel, Azzedine Alaia, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Gianni Versace, Armani, Chloe, and John Galliano to name a few and shot for all the prestigious international fashion magazines - Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie-Claire, and others. My first designs were very simple slip dresses and camisoles. Pieces I needed for myself and couldn’t seem to find in stores at the time and worked with my hectic modelling travel schedule. They were easy to pack, were perfect with that innerwear as outerwear look that was just starting to happen, they made me feel good to either sleep in or wear out, they could very easily be layered and worked well with other items in my wardrobe. I started with six silk slip dresses and six silk camisoles and six colours. My husband Joe Coffey who is the Co-founder and CEO of our Little Joe Woman brand and I booked our first buying appointment with Browns Boutique on South Molton Street in London. We made an appointment with Mrs Burstein who knew of me from walking the fashion runways. She bought the whole collection and our business started from there. What is it you like best about being a fashion designer? I love that fashion is forever changing, therefore there’s always something new and exciting happening. I also love

how clothing makes you feel and can change your mood. One can feel powerful, professional, sexy, feminine, or alluring simply by what one chooses to wear. I also love being able to design pieces that make women feel confident and strong. Who or what are your inspirations for creating your designs? I’m inspired everyday by my life, things I see, people I meet, the places I travel to and conversations and experiences I have. I design for myself, my friends and for my customers and gather information for the next collection months before we have to put it down on paper. Our collections feature bold animal prints, fringing, embroidery, leather, florals, and lace. I love the look of a feminine silk slip dress teamed with a leather jacket and an ankle boot. It’s feminine and masculine at the same time, it’s classic, elegant, never dates and is one of our signature looks. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is a wonderful way to express yourself - it’s a great way for me to connect with the women of the world. Our Little Joe Woman customer appreciates luxury. She has an elegant rock-chic vibe, she’s a busy person, she enjoys travel and loves life…. just like me. How does your fashion relate to New Zealanders? We have a group of customers from New Zealand who love and are very loyal to the brand. I find our N.Z customers are stylish, well-travelled and well read-women who enjoy fashion. They’re stylish and intelligent - some are CEOs of companies and others own their businesses. I am also very strong on customer service and personally answer all inquiries and give styling advice to anyone and everyone who asks as I really am the most experienced and best person for this and our N.Z customers very much appreciate this. How do you relax / feel luxurious? I enjoy simple things to relax like having a cup of tea in a beautiful cup or taking our six dogs for a long beach walk with my husband. Sitting in a cafe people watching, having an afternoon by the pool, or reading all make me feel relaxed. Owning a good quality cashmere scarf or blanket and always being well groomed by having a manicure, pedicure and blow-dry can make me feel relaxed, pampered, and luxurious. I don’t need much; I enjoy simple pleasures.

19

LIFESTYLE

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own fashion label?

What are some of your favourite brands? I love Chanel, Hermes and Azzedine Alaia and still have so many pieces of clothing, handbags, shoes, and jewellery gifted to me from the designers that I still wear and team with my current Little Joe Woman pieces. Who is your style icon? My style icon is a mix of Carine Roitfeld and Kate Moss. Classic, stylish, and elegant. What music is playing while you’re working? I’m quite into a selection of music - Chet Faker, Amos Lee, Plan B, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Angus & Julia Stone and I love Post Malone. What’s your favourite piece that you’ve created to date? I’d have to say our slip dresses and camisoles. We introduce new styles and colours into every collection and they’re always staples and our best sellers whether they’re with lace, minimal without, solid colours, printed, luxe silk tie-dyed, short, knee length or maxi. We started with these items, and we’ve become known for them now and I also happen to live in slip dresses whether I’m heading to the office, taking a beach walk, meeting friends or simply being at home. They’re the simplest, most comfortable pieces and are flattering to all body shapes, they’re always current, easily layered with cashmere, leather, under a coat or even over slim pants they’re perfect dressed up or down and make you look and feel feminine, polished, and cool. What is your best and worst fashion moment? Every collection is an achievement I’m proud of and feels like a fashion moment. Having people purchasing our brand or seeing people in the street or on Instagram wearing something we’ve designed is something I feel proud of. Seeing everyone’s individual styles is so interesting to me and seeing someone carrying a Little Joe Woman carrier bag or seeing the sales come through on the website is something that always makes me smile and appreciate how far we’ve come as a business. I don’t think I’ve had a worst fashion moment yet - hopefully I’ll never experience one. How do you stay up to date regarding fashion? I don’t know, it’s just something you have, or you don’t. It’s being connected to women, our customers and what I feel I and others will want to wear.

I LOVE what I do and owning a business with my husband who lucky for me is also my business partner. I also love working in fashion and designing clothing that can make women feel beautiful and confident about themselves, but it can be very exhausting when I have so much to do and wish there were 8 days in a week. When we started our Little Joe Woman brand, I had no idea of what goes into making a brand work and be successful. To begin with it was easy because we were new and had a good story and designed pieces everyone wanted to wear, and stores wanted to purchase the brand. But after a few collections, stores wanted more categories, wanted us to design for more seasons and as we grew things got more complicated. It’s not just about designing pretty clothing, you also need to understand fabric and trim prices and what that can do for a garment, sampling, production, retail margins, wholesale margins, shipping and delivery timing, staff, rents and so much more. Then there’s the whole marketing side… so I would very much advise anyone who wants to start their own fashion label to learn as much as they can beforehand. What will be the must-buy fashion item for next summer? This summer I’m looking forward to wearing long flowing chiffon maxi dresses in our exclusive luxe-boho prints, silk slips and delicate camisoles with soft flowing pants, and lace, leather, and fringe cocktail dresses. We’ll also launch a beautiful new embroidered crinkle cotton Resort Collection. I look forward to continuing to grow our brand and designing beautiful pieces for stylish, interesting women in New Zealand and all over the world. LittleJoeWoman.com

FASHION

KEEPING AN EYE ON… WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FASHION DESIGNING AS A CAREER? From a very young age I’ve loved fashion. The fabrics, design and the fact that you can express your inner personality through the clothing you wear. It’s important to follow what you love doing so I went off and studied fashion when I was 17 years old and not long after I started my self - titled brand.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? My personal style is very relaxed in my day to day life. I tend to stick to neutral tones so I blend in. I always love when there’s an event on as I can wear my own designs and get dressed up.

JAKOB CARTER

IF YOU COULD GIVE TEENAGE JAKOB ADVICE BEFORE HE EMBARKS ON HIS CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Honestly I could write a book with what I have learned about fashion and business but you’re always growing and learning so I just take things as they come. I think the biggest thing is just to believe in yourself! It’s important to believe in not just yourself but the people around you. It’s how we grow and everyone just needs a bit of help, love and support along the way.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER? I think the best part is probably seeing your designs come to life. You spend so much time looking at every little detail to make sure everything is perfect, the design, fabrics, fit and so much more. Also seeing people’s faces when they first see themselves in your pieces! Such a cool feeling. WHAT IS FASHION FOR YOU? Fashion for me is expression of one’s inner personality. It helps people get an understanding of who you are and how you show yourself to the world and the people around you. I always love fashion at events as that’s when people really start to get creative.

WHO AND WHICH THINGS ARE THE INSPIRATION WHILE CREATING ANY DESIGN? Each design is inspired by something different. People, personalities, landscapes, adventures, textures and so much more. I find it’s great to draw inspiration from multiple avenues as it helps keep things different and fresh.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? I’m currently working on Season 3 and some exciting new stuff being added to our home fragrance collection and I look forward to sharing these in coming months. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE THAT YOU’VE CREATED TO DATE? I think my favourite piece is the ‘Christelle Dress’ in my latest collection. This piece was inspired by strong and empowering women. I remember at the shoot for Season 2, I hadn’t come up with a name for this dress yet. We had Christelle modelling this piece and watching her being so confident while modelling, it only felt right to name this dress after her.

Wool You With the weather getting colder it’s time we’re getting our woolies out from the back of the closest and wrapping up. But washing these garments calls for extra care. Here’s our top 5 tips for washing your winter woolies

Dark Hampton The Egden Cashmere Modal Scarf $109.00

1. Be Gentle - when machine washing, make sure you’re using the setting for ‘delicates’ 2. Soaking - if you’re hand washing, soak the garment in cold water, this will stop the item from shrinking. 3. Wash Occasionally - wooly garments won’t need washing as often and if there’s a stain it can often be brushed or dabbed out before it sets. 4. Dry carefully - use a clothes rack to lie the garment flat to dry, in fresh air if possible 5. Iron with caution - make sure you’re using the ‘cool’ setting when ironing wool garments.

Most people resort to Botox, fillers or surgery but today’s advanced technology has something much better to offer — Hollywood’s secret to looking 10 years younger, without the need for needles or knives. KAIZ, a wellness medispa located in the heart of Parnell, recently launched their Hollywood Glow non-surgical facelift. Auckland can now experience the exact same facial that has been a hit among A-list celebs like Madonna, Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lopez because of its instant anti-aging results. After Kim Kardashian posted an Instagram story of the facial, the secret was finally out. People all over the globe witnessed the benefits of Microcurrent and LED Light Therapy, the innovative technology behind the Hollywood Glow facial. J.Lo was so impressed with her results that she even purchased her own machine after trying it in the UK. The Hollywood Glow is designed to zap away fine lines and wrinkles and simultaneously lift loose skin around your face. This breakthrough is dubbed as the best alternative to Botox and fillers as it provides similar results without having to go through unnecessary pain or downtime. The facial uses a device that runs microcurrents across your skin and gives you immediate anti-aging benefits that peak on the third day and last up to 6 weeks. They also work cumulatively so you will see more improvement over the long term if you continue treatments.

The Hollywood Glow also utilizes Red LED light therapy which has been clinically proven to reduce wrinkles, speed up the healing of scars and blemishes, and tighten sagging skin, resulting in a more youthful and radiant appearance. Microcurrent and LED Light Therapy treatments are completely safe and have been practiced in medicine for many years. So there’s no need to worry about harming your skin or facial muscles.

KAIZ partnered with Caci Synergy and brought their machines all the way from the UK for their Hollywood Glow treatments. Caci Synergy is a trusted aesthetic treatment brand who supplies over 10,000 of the world’s leading hotels, spas and aesthetic clinics. Their goal is to give Auckland the best skin technology out there, complimented with their bespoke service. Apart from that, KAIZ offers a safe environment with strict Covid-19 protocols and meticulous clinical procedures which licensed therapists faithfully follow. Undergoing skin and body treatments at KAIZ doesn’t only mean getting the results you desire, it also means creating a positive effect on your overall wellness. Which is why they constantly remind everyone to practice self-care. Kaiz values the beauty in being grounded and believes everyone deserves the opportunity to trade in pressure for peace, chaos for calmness, and stress for stillness. They provide top of the line treatments that not only affect your outer appearance alone, but your inner presence as well.

RESULTS One of Kaiz’s clients is loving the instant results of the Hollywood Glow. Look how brighter & softer her eyes look after just a few sessions. Thanks to this treatment, she decided not to push through with surgery to lift her hooded eyes. It’s a great alternative to invasive skin tightening procedures with zero downtime.

Multiple clients of KAIZ have attested to the effectiveness of the facial. Regular Botox customers have completely stopped injectables and shifted to Hollywood Glow treatments.

Another client, Gazala, who has been dealing with acne issues after giving birth to her child 15 years ago felt hopeless back then saying, “I tried everything but no success.” Fortunately she heard about KAIZ and just after a few sessions of the Hollywood Glow, her acne eventually cleared up. Satisfied with the outcome, Gazala gets the facial regularly and makes her teenage son tag along to be treated for his acne at KAIZ.

KAIZ offers a range of skin and body treatments that can provide faster, better and longer-lasting results without having to deal with side effects from needles or surgery. They advocate beauty without the need for harmful and invasive treatments. Toxin-free cosmetic procedures are growing in popularity as society and people are more aware and conscious of what they put into their body especially during this time.

MORE ABOUT KAIZ

Botox is undeniably effective and incontestably a wellknown method to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. However, an in-depth study needs to be conducted to determine the potential risks and threats of this treatment. Adverse effects of Botox have been evident on many clients who are now with KAIZ. Cornita, one of KAIZ’s managers, witnessed these risks first-hand from her clients who have been under Botox or fillers for a long period of time. She mentioned, “I can see a hard lump on their faces that can be moved around, which has been accumulating over time. It’s quite scary really”

Kaiz offers a variety of state-of-the-art services to improve skin and slow down the aging process, including Microcurrent treatments, High Intensive Focus Ultrasound, Radio Frequency, Microneedling, Chemical Peels and many more holistic non-invasive treatments. Kaiz only opened its doors in December, when New Zealand loosened the restrictions, thus allowing businesses within the beauty industry to operate. Most clients who paid a visit to KAIZ have undergone the Hollywood Glow facial and have been raving about it. No filter or filler needed. KAIZ is a wellness medispa that uses technology to deliver proven results in lieu of Botox.

THE BEST OF SCIENCE + NATURE WITH SÁVAR SKINCARE Sávar skincare is one of the country’s best kept secret for sensitive skin. Founded in 2010 by Vicky Woolford, who out of frustration during her search for a solution for her own sensitive and fragile skin, decided to create a brand to deliver optimal skin health for sensitive skin. The unique formulas involve more than just gentle formulations that are free from harsh chemicals. They are aimed at protecting and repairing the skin barrier, as well as calming, soothing, and reducing redness and inflammation. Sávar combines the science of pure and natural plantbased ingredients with professional research. This allows them to formulate products that deliver real and visible results. The innovative formulas - as hard-working as they may be - are still gentle enough for daily use and are free from silicone, mineral oils, pigments, hormones, formaldehyde, benzene, parabens, and artificial fragrances.

Sávar Hydrating Moonlight Glow Mask Sávar’s latest release is the Hydrating Moonlight Glow Mask. This sheet mask is infused with a nutrient-rich hydrating serum which will help restore skin’s youthful radiance and significantly boost moisture levels and is suitable for all skin types. In just 15 minutes, the botanical blend of Bearberry Extract, Pomegranate, Rice Bran Extract and Vitamin C trio transforms dull skin into a more illuminated complexion that’s bursting with hydration. Sure to put the ‘zing’ back into your skin!

Niacinamide works deep within your skin to visibly minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, improve uneven skin tone, soften fine lines and wrinkles and address lacklustre skin. Furthermore, it helps to decrease trans-epidermal water loss by strengthening your weakened skin barrier. The sheet itself is made with Bemliese™, the highest quality available which features superior liquid absorbency, thermal stability and purity. In short, it’s the best way to deliver the high-performance to your skin in a comfortable manner.

How to use: Thoroughly cleanse and dry skin, then unfold the mask and fit it over your face. Adjust by gently pressing it over your facial contours. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then massage the remaining serum into your skin. The Hydrating Moonlight Glow Mask is $38.00 and will be launched in July 2022. savarbeauty.co.nz

WHAT DO WOMEN WANT? THE QUESTION HAS OFTEN BEEN ASKED “WHAT DO WOMEN WANT?” AND DESPITE EXTENSIVE SCHOLARLY DEBATE, NO DEFINITIVE ANSWER HAS YET EMERGED. I was ruminating on this question recently when I realized that the answer, conditional though it may be, is obvious – ‘it depends”. My main area of professional interest as a plastic surgeon has always been the face: from reconstructing congenital anomalies like cleft lips and palates in 3 month old babies to doing age-appropriate nips and tucks on older people, I have always loved the variety and challenges of the human face and its appendages. Which is not to say that I don’t like other aspects of the human form. After all, Plastic surgeons operate on all parts of the body, and at all ages. And outliers excepted, it’s been my experience that certain operations and procedures are more commonly sought by women in particular age ranges. For example, young women come in for breast augmentation and older women for breast reductions. The young woman who is bothered by the shape of her nose or her weak chin, gives way to the late thirtysomething mother who, having exhausted the benefits of Botox and fillers, is starting to notice that she has developed some bagginess of the eyelids and that her once buoyant eyebrows are starting to sink; the middle aged woman sees the first signs of her father’s jowls appearing on her softening jawline and then notices that

Before

she looks better when the soft tissue is pulled up and back by her anxious fingers. What all these women have in common is that they have more or less typical age-appropriate concerns; what I love about plastic surgery is that we have something to offer each of them. Prominent ears? We can pin them back so they look unobtrusive and unoperated. Ears too large? We can reduce their size, again with minimal scarring (after all, minimizing visible scars is half the art and science of plastic surgery). Nose too big, too small, too long, too humped, too hooked, skew, bent, broken, asymmetric? Again, we can help. Starting to look like your Mum (or your Dad) with scraggy necks or drooping cheeks, again, we’re here for you. And ditto for body issues: breasts too small or too large; abdomen sagging, unwanted fat deposits on your knees, cankles, whatever. And in each case, you won’t be offered a one size fits all solution – your concerns will be listened to and realistic options and solutions offered. All you have to do is come in and ask. After all, that’s the only way we can really be certain if what we can offer is really what you, as a woman, want. By Tristan De Chalain remuerasurgical.co.nz

WEDDING

“I CONSIDER EACH WEDDING THAT I OFFICIATE A TRUE HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE.”

SAYING ‘I DO’ TO A WEDDING CELEBRANT Every year, people across the world spend thousands and arguably even more time, planning and attending weddings. And why not? They are joyous celebrations, and above all ‘us’ - the merging of two families. Parents, sisters, best friends all make up the varying roles in a wedding party. In fact, standing up at the front with the couple ready to be married, are their closest family and dearest friends, except for one person - the celebrant. A celebrant has a unique role and arguably the most important in a wedding and choosing the right one is an art in itself. Celebrant Matt Jackson knows all about these concerns and more. An experienced celebrant with a background in event management, Jackson has seen it all and through it all maintains a personal, professional, and positive approach. Jackson works on all unions and can cater for something traditional, a wedding with a twist or even just completely outside the box. “I’ve been Elvis live on radio”.

“I’m a romantic at heart and so I bring a certain flair to weddings, but the best part is connecting with the couples that I marry to find out what makes them special together. I consider each wedding that I officiate a true honour and privilege.” says Jackson. One of the trickiest questions that Jackson is often asked is “How much are you?”, Its often the first question before he is even asked if he is free on that day. “For things to be ‘amazing’ and go ‘smoothly’ we need to put in hours of time and triple check everything, which is what we get pleasure from - doing a great job. It’s your wedding day!” So, maybe the question to ask is “Can you please outline your level of service?” That way you can judge if the fee is

a fair price for what is on offer and make a decision from there. When you hire me, it’s more than me just turning up on the day suited and booted. It’s pulling together the ceremony and weaving in your personal touch to your day, putting you at ease on the day, providing you advice about your day and being available to you during the time before your wedding and obviously making sure that you are legally married. It’s creating a magical experience. You are paying for my experience and expertise and making your day just as special as you, but please remember that out of that celebrant fee comes all my expenses - tax, kiwisaver, ACC levy, printing, suits, stationery, travel, equipment, advertising, professional development, presentation costs etc. Weddings can be stressful and there’s often only one chance to get it right. Jackson understands this and starts off with an easy catch up so Matt can guide you through the process and ensure that the ceremony is exactly as you dreamed about.

Top 5 questions to ask your wedding celebrant 1. How many weddings do you do in one day? 2. What happens if you are sick? 3. Can you please outline your level of service? 4. What equipment will you need on the day? 5. And most importantly - are you available for our wedding date?

She is a well - known mover and shaker within the industry and has built her business on a foundation of hard work and honesty. Her services are broad and she kicks arse when challenged by her clients. She even has Heston Blumenthal on her list of clients. Frances’s (Frankie’s) commitment to her clients and her desire to be the best has caused her to reach far and wide for the best creatives, designers, production specialists and front line staff. And with all of this she still provides a service that is smoothly run and that is not over-engineered. ‘For us, the events are all about storytelling and taking people on a journey. We understand that the experience doesn’t end at the completion of the event itself but continues to resonate, reminisce and be relived over the following months,’ says Frankie. From the first concept through to when the last glass is safely packed away and the lights are turned off, Frankie ensures that the client’s journey through the process is seamless and memorable. Whether it’s a small intimate gathering at home or a gala dinner for 800 guests, no job is too big or too small. Their professional team are specialists

at what they do and offer comprehensive services, every event is bespoke, as no two clients or events are alike. Her experiences in the corporate sector and hospitality industry, including owning and operating some of New Zealand’s best bars, ensured every event was a success. Whether it was a wedding or intimate corporate event, Frankie’s relationship management and high standards makes every event a success! When the impacts of COVID-19 started to hit the industry, it’s no surprise that Frankie used the opportunity to not just survive but to thrive. She used her creative skills to order different services and her clients supported her and even managed to grow her team. “However, at the end of the day, it’s really made us stronger and better at what we do. I couldn’t imagine that, after 17 years in the industry, I would be learning such a tough lesson - but here we are! We’re now able to bring our clients an even more seamless experience and take some of the uncertainty and weight off their shoulders.” ninetyninereasons.co.nz

AN OASIS WITH ITS OWN RICH HISTORY, IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT’S ONLY 30 MINUTES FROM THE CBD. Once you get there, white-sand beaches, vineyards and the perfect mix of culture, nature and convenience awaits. All you have to do is choose the right accommodation! Omana Luxury Villas are situated on almost four acres of verdant land, including a forest of ancient trees, rolling down to an idyllic crescent shaped private beach. A private paradise in itself, Omana boasts four, just four exquisitely designed and detailed villas. Each is as luxurious as the next with uninterrupted sea and forest views. Purposefully designed to be in harmony with nature, each villa is perfectly in-step with the native bush that surrounds it. The result? A flourishing outside plant life provides a serene atmosphere for your stay. Pete Bossley, a highly regarded New Zealand architect was commissioned to design the villas to the highest standards of sustainability. Building products are all environmentally certified and bought locally where possible. Everyone involved in the building project was handpicked for both the quality and detail of their work as well as their passion for working in harmony with nature. The interior is the epitome of luxury. Relax in bespoke furnishings and enjoy your favourite music or a new movie on state-of-the-art technology. Or draw a bath and sip on Waiheke’s finest wine as you watch the beautiful coastal views. Co-owner Silmara Scholtz has personally led the design of all interiors with her passionate Brazilian heart – and with an inherent sense of style and flair. Bespoke furnishings have been hand-picked for each villa, with no detail overlooked. Even the beds have been manufactured to her exacting standards. Just about every decision made since Silmara and her husband Cobus purchased the property has not only been aesthetically pleasing but has also been for the good of the earth. They have significantly invested in ensuring the Omana forest can prosper, ridding it of exotics, weeds and pests and developing a program of native planting to create a more welcoming thriving environment for wildlife. This effort has already increased the bird life including the return of the tuis! A big- hearted quality across every aspect of your stay, enjoy your own slice of a picture-perfect piece of Waiheke Island. Where else should you be but here?

With a unique blend of art, nature, and a sense of connectedness with sustainability at its core, it is a location that brings back travelers and locals alike time and time again. Located in the heart of Auckland’s bustling CBD, The Hotel Britomart can be found nestled within the Britomart neighborhood. As Aotearoa’s first 5 Green-star hotel, The Hotel Britomart truly does detail like nobody else, from its exterior of hand-made bricks to its beautifully timber-lined rooms.

Neutral tones encapsulate the hotel and immediately provide a sense of calm to guests. The hotel’s 5 Green Star status means sustainability is considered in every design, build and procurement decision the hotel makes, from choosing bedding to airconditioning systems. With 99 guest rooms, each featuring snug timber-lined walls, built-in sofas to watch the world go by below and hand-made ceramics, it’s obvious that careful detail is thought of. The bathrooms on their own are impressive. Beautiful dark grey tiles line the waterfall shower that

soak away any stress of the day. In addition, they have The Landing Suites, five in total, each designed with highly crafted interiors, luxury living spaces and, on three of the suites, lush garden terraces. The Hotel Britomart’s 5 Green-star status is evident throughout, from the actual construction of the building through to the final touches in each room. Whether you’re looking for an extended weekend experience, a celebration evening or romantic stay for two, The Hotel Britomart is our top pick in Auckland for a tasteful, luxurious, and genuine experience. The Britomart Black Card Package includes breakfast for two in kingi, a complimentary upgrade to the next available guest room type and a $100 Britomart Black Card for each night of your stay that can be spent in kingi , towards a massage, valet parking or in any of the 65+ restaurants, cafes, salons, bars, and boutiques in the nine-block Britomart neighbourhood. While staying at The Hotel Britomart, guests are welcome to explore the Britomart neighbourhood at their doorstep. Borrow one of the

hotel’s bicycles for a ride along Auckland’s waterfront or walk to a gallery, show, or the ferry terminal for a day trip to Waiheke. Lying between the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland’s lower CBD, the Britomart neighbourhood is a 6.5-hectare waterfront precinct of heritage buildings, new developments, and open and intimate public spaces. But what is a staycation without a beautiful meal? The Hotel Britomart’s own kingi encapsulates the essence of true New Zealand seafood and was named after the iconic and much sought-after Kingfish by co-founders Tom Hishon and Josh Helm. Hishon and Helm are already renowned for their established restaurant, Orphan’s Kitchen in Ponsonby, which celebrates the national flavours of Aotearoaand so kingi has been born into high expectation. TIME IS A LUXURY... SPEND IT RELAXING AND UNWINDING TO THE BEAT THAT SURROUNDS YOU.

Takatu Lodge & Vineyard offers a space where you will enjoy wine that speaks of its terroir, matched with cuisine cooked from the soul. The warm friendliness welcomes you with familiarity and your luxury suite spoils you with those extra special touches that make your stay simply relaxing and seamless. Located in the Matakana Coast region north of Auckland, Takatu Lodge & Vineyard is perched on a hill and lies on the humble lands that were once an historic Kauri Forest. Still maintaining the calming vibration of an untampered woodland, you feel quite at ease in a space that allows you to think freely with an everchanging view that will absorb you, leaving your everyday life behind.

During summer, dining by the outdoor wood fireplace under the stars is an experience worthy of the surroundings. Your evening is orchestrated with a 3-course candle-lit dinner savoured with the wines of Takatu. With a virtual matching over five vintages including their earliest 2010 Flagship Bordeaux style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, the evening brings together the “Takatu Experience” that guests return for. Dining during winter is yet another experience in the luxury of an indoor wood fireplace with candles illuminating the lodge “Kitchen”. Matakana and its surrounds offer quite a diverse activity playground with some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, nature walking tracks, art galleries and

sculpture trails, beach horse riding and so, so much more. In preparation for exploring, your day at Takatu Lodge & Vineyard begins with complete leisure. You may wish to enjoy your 2-course gourmet breakfast in the comfort of your suite or leisurely wander into the lodge “Kitchen” embracing the morning views of the Hauraki Gulf, pastoral land and sometimes be joined by the regularly visiting wild feathered friends. From the comfort of your luxurious Premium suite awaken to the mesmerising sunrise cradled between Little Barrier and Great Barrier Islands and enjoy a French Press coffee on your private deck that leads into the vineyard. However, if a glass of Rose in the early evening on a private balcony watching the sun set is more your favour, a Deluxe suite offers views overlooking the vineyard with the silhouette of the hills surrendering their green nuances to the descending golden glow. Winter has a spectacular sunset with smouldering amber dropping behind the sleeve of Mt Tamahunga casting hazy rays into the crevices of the mountain. This is a special place that for many has become their returning getaway. A boutique vineyard with 3.25 hectares under vine, Takatu’s French styled wines have been appreciated in restaurants from Auckland up to Paihia with a softening introduction in the Cook Islands. The wine making technique and wine style provides for great cellaring of up to 10 years or more dependent on the vintage. Their flagship Bordeaux style blend proves to be an astounding aging wine with the oldest of their wines, the 2010 only being available to in-house guests when dining.

SUMMER In mid-Summer enjoy a crisp glass of Rose or Pinot Gris as you meander through the lushness of the vines, dripping with grapes that allure you and dare you to pick. Closing into harvest is spectacular before the nets are put on to fend off the birds from the sweet ripening fruits. AUTUMN Autumn is filled with a blanket of copper, yellow, red, orange and gold. There is a sense of comfort and satisfaction as the harvesting of grapes has completed and the vineyard prepares for the cooler months. The later Autumn breeze removes the last of the vine leaves leaving behind only the gangly canes that once were overladen with lush leaf and grapes. WINTER During winter, through harsh and bitter winds, the cutting of the canes takes place with the delicate choosing of 2 canes to remain on the vine to be later tied down. The vines lay dormant over the remaining of winter, a resting period crucial for the future stamina of the plant, in preparation for Spring when the new buds appear. SPRING Embracing the fresh Spring air and soft warm sun, the vine buds speckle across the vineyard stretching into the skies as they unfold their delicate leaves over time. Life again begins in the vineyard bringing a spectacle of re-creation right before your eyes. The veiny leaves halo in the afternoon sun with their yellow lime green nuances. With subMediterranean Maritime climate, there is very little threat of frost damaging the buds, and so the vintage begins.

GOING, GOING, GONE! without having to go to the conditional market. Auctions will also give you great feedback as to exactly where the market sees the price of your home. 6) What does Apollo Auctions offer than makes then stand out in the crowd We are a full service based independent Auction house and New Zealand’s largest. We collectively call for over 300 different brands and agencies and over most of the major New Zealand markets. This gives us up to the minute at the coal face information of what is happening and we can offer this info up to clients and their Vendors to help get the sales over the line. Being over so many different agencies we are very adaptable and don’t have the one size fits all mindset.

1) What are the key qualities in choosing an auctioneer? Everything is online now so do a search and watch the auctioneers’ videos and watch how they work and you will instantly know whether they are good or not just through the energy and flow of their call. Phone around, as there aren’t many independent auctioneers like us at Apollo Auctions and we are New Zealand’s largest Real Estate auction house. All you have to do is give me a call. 2) Why did you choose this profession? When I was an agent, I ran my first auction campaign and seeing the auctioneer stand up there doing his thing was an instant ‘call’ for me and from there I kept creating pathways that led me to being a full time Auctioneer and loving what I do every single day! 3) How has the last 2 years and Covid affected your company? It has forced us to move more online and offer virtual auctions so people could bid and buy their homes upfront. This has actually opened up a whole new range for us and we are now building 2 brand new state of the art broadcasting studios to be able to facilitate auctions all over the country without having to leave Auckland. 4) Is there such a thing as the perfect sale? Definitely! Real Estate is just process so if the Listing Agent is really sharp at the selling process and has done all the right things, I get to step in and put the cherry on top and all parties walk away happy 5) Why would someone choose an auction over a tender or an offer? Auction is the only process where the home - owner (seller) holds the control over the selling process. Auction is the most transparent way for buyers to buy property. In a turning market like we are in now, auctions give the sellers the opportunity to negotiate with unconditional cash buyers first

7) If you were prime minister for a day what would you do? I would reprieve any remnants of what’s left of any covid restrictions, I would completely open up our borders and drive tourism and migration for skilled migrants back to NZ. I would pull back the acreage of red tape councils have created that slows down and only adds costs to any new build and development work. I would announce mental health initiatives that actually work with non-pharmaceutical company influenced health advice sent out en- mass to the public..... Imagine what I would do if I had two days!

LOOK TO THE STARS TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE WITH ARTIST JAY HORAN.

Jay Horan, Work no. 2 ‘The Energy of Eight’, Retro Collection

A member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists and the New York Artists Equity Association, Horan is a contemporary visual artist. Alongside Auckland, his latest collection will exhibit in New York, London and Shanghai. Horan takes inspiration from personal journeys and exploration of society, nature, cosmology and the human consciousness. Horan’s practice aims to decipher the mysteries of the universe and human consciousness with a deep passion and drive to explore journeys of patterns and shapes. A visual artist, Horan began his journey over a decade ago, inspired by synthesising mosaics, mandalas and traditional crafts. Horan creates intricate works that take viewers on a mesmerising aesthetic experience through the celestial heavens and the human consciousness itself.

“I enjoy researching to comprehend the discovery and correlate findings to the artwork. Speaking with experts in their fields, such as scientists, jewellers, and artists, I enjoy the deep, meaningful conversations. The slow-paced cutting of the materials

into small shapes, with several works taking many hours to complete, leads to a meditative experience. While creating the shapes, patterns, and colours, they do not necessarily feel the same way our senses understand them; this is the mystery that intrigues me; consequently, this leads my approach to connect the findings from our environment and the sciences to create artwork that conveys this metamorphosis”.

an almost meditative practice while being created. While proportional calculations are essential in the process, unique contrasts and imbalances sometimes emerge. In many ways, these discoveries give the work a new aesthetic dimension - in character and curiosity. View some of his work on instagram: jay.horan

Each artwork is carefully composed of small mosaic parts with deep tones or fluorescent colours, bringing traditional methods together with modern ones. The final result is rich in detailed work, and when exhibited in the dark under direct light, the pieces have a luminous glow and feel. The past year has been one reflection for many New Zealanders - and Horan is no different. The hundreds of small parts of colourful shapes used in his works represent balanced and, sometimes unbalanced emotions that have defined us over the last two years. Using traditional mosaic practices alongside new processes and tools, Horan’s artworks are impacted by

HANNAH FANG VIOLIN HANNAH FANG HAS MADE A CAREER OUT OF PLAYING THE VIOLIN. Her father, Jian Fang, first handed her a violin at age three and by the time Hannah was ten, she was practicing six hours a day. Now, Hannah loves the fact that she’s able to make a career out of her talent, something many aspiring musicians struggle to do. Hannah attributes her success to her late father, who had a passion for making violins, and wanted his daughter to be the very best at it. “Be first or be last…is what my father would tell me” Hannah laughs, Fast forward to present day and Hannah now earns her living by touring internationally, performing her unique style of entertainment, violin meets the contemporary. Hannah is proud to have made the instrument her own, breaking boundaries of the classical realm and breaking notions of what people expect from a violinist.

While one wouldn’t necessarily pair violin with drum and bass, metal or hip-hop, they certainly wouldn’t expect to see dancing, mosh pits, smoke, confetti cannons, a whole ‘oh my god’ performance. So, what does Hannah love most about performing? Simple - she loves seeing the surprise on people’s face: “I love seeing people dance and sing along with me, but most of all I love surprising them; they always look so shocked and are mouthing WOW - it’s the most beautiful moment for me.” This is exactly how Hannah plans to change people’s ideas of the classic instrument. hannahfangviolin.com

SQUAREONE – THE EASY WAY TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT MONEY IT’S TIME TO SMASH THE PIGGY BANKS (LITERALLY) AND LET SQUAREONE TEACH YOUR KIDS. SquareOne is a FREE, fun, app for kids to manage their own money while giving them simple tools to learn sensible money habits. The purpose-built mobile app with accompanying card is the first-of-its-kind in New Zealand and local founders Jovan Pavlicevic and Jamie Jermain have signed a seven-year partnership with Mastercard to bring this state-of-the-art app to life. Pavlicevic and Jermain wanted an easy and effective way to teach money confidence to their own kids while using REAL money and that’s how SquareOne was born. Both guys have impressive backgrounds in the financial sector and used their money smarts to build a kid-friendly, parent accessible app to help Kiwi kids be GREAT WITH MONEY! “A staggering one third of ALL working-age Kiwis have less than $1,000 saved and 51% of students report little or no financial education at school. We created SquareOne to fill the gaping hole in our financial education and provide financial wellbeing for our next generation,” says cofounder Jovan Pavlicevic. Studies in New Zealand report finding that young people have low financial literacy, take part in little formal financial capability training and gain more out of education when it is directly relevant to their life and parental modelling. While introducing kids to spending, SquareOne actively promotes the idea of saving within the app. Whether it’s putting money away for a new bike, an X-box or something smaller, kids can easily set up savings goals either through the app or with the help of their parents. SquareOne has stringent safeguards in place in case of loss or theft including, no names and numbers on cards and parental access to temporarily lock and unlock their child’s card in app at any time. It also offers real-time spending notifications and blocks over-18 merchants including alcohol outlets and gambling services. SquareOne fosters positive money habits in kids by offering the right incentives to save their money and a beautiful experience to track their progress. SquareOne offers parents an easy way to turn household chores into earning opportunities. With incentives to earn and learn, kids quickly appreciate the power of saving, spending, borrowing and

more. SquareOne puts the tools in parents’ hands and the knowledge with their kids. “SquareOne accounts give parents control, and kids get to experience money first-hand; while our Mastercard partnership ensures secure payments,” says Pavlicevic. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS Kids get to manage their own money while parents have complete visibility over their saving and spending. SAFETY There are no details on the card so there’s less risk of card fraud and kids can only spend what’s loaded onto their card. PROTECTED Your kids can’t buy from places they shouldn’t. Parents get real-time view on spend and can easily set spending limits and savings goals. FREEZE CARDS Instantly freeze and unfreeze your SquareOne card anywhere any time direct from the app. FREE There’s no joining fee or annual fee so every Kiwi kid has access. GOALS Whether your child wants to save for a lollipop or a laptop they simply set a target and watch their savings grow. GETTING STARTED Download the SquareOne app on the app store or Google Play. Follow the easy prompts to apply and voila you’re ready to roll – no going into the bank and meeting with the bank manager, no paper forms, and no hassle. Your child’s card comes in the post - but with SquareOne there’s no need to wait - kids can use the card online right away, and it’s also ready to go with Apple and Google pay, so what are you waiting for? Set your kids up now because they’re never too young to start learning sensible money habits. They’ll be laughing all the way to the app. www.getsquareone.app

THE IV LOUNGE MEDICAL CLINIC OUR GENERAL HEALTH AND IMMUNE SYSTEM HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE VULNERABLE. BY VANESSA BENNETT Let’s face it, we’ve been tossed like a limp salad over the past two years, and it feels like we all are in desperate need of a refresh to get us out of that Covid fog. While I always make time to exercise, this and healthy eating can only do so much and sometimes you need to go that extra mile and give yourself that extra boost. So, this is where I introduce Aqua Viva in Parnell, a new infusion clinic that started in the Covid outbreak. While many businesses were forced to shut their doors, Aqua Viva created a service that people desperately needed, a place where health and wellbeing was at the forefront. They have a holistic, patient-centred approach to medicine and are all about focusing on prevention and root causes. It’s a simple system: you book in, pick your ‘cocktail’ of vitamins, and sit for about 45 minutes to 1 hour with a drip in your arm filling you up with all the goodness. I started with the Vit C and Glutathione infusion (it only takes 45 minutes) and a week after my treatment I found my mind to be more alert and my body more energetic. As I head into my 50’s I have a far greater desire to look after my health and because of this, I am a regular now at Aqua Viva! IV Vit C infusions have been happening for years and many cancer patients have found them to be effective. Dr Ulrich Doering brings all of his products from Germany and they are of the highest level of potency and standards. The drips at The IV Lounge are completely unique and have a number of special benefits for infections, stress relief and neurotransmitter recovery and balancing, weight loss, liver cleansing and so much more. These are all produced in a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical laboratory and the formulations are the result of the close working relationships between doctors and pharmacists for over 50 years.

One of my favourite treatments is the NAD +/NADH, as it helps with anti-aging, longevity, protects and repairs DNA and assists cellular regeneration. It’s quite literally the fountain of youth as it vertically stops the aging process. Aqua Viva is a special find and the perfect place to visit if you’re suffering from a chronic illness or simply need a boost.

TAKING CONTROL AT 31 YEARS OLD, TRAVEL BLOGGER LIZ CARLSON HAD A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH AND AN APPETITE FOR ADVENTURE. Since starting her blog, Young Adventuress, over 10 years ago, Liz has been on some extraordinary journeys, yet on Valentine’s Day 2020, she experienced a heart attack that became the motivation to change her life for the better.

these days. Instead of running towards airport gates last minute, Liz has made changes in her everyday habits to reduce stress, such as sleeping more, massage therapy and taking control of her life.

That morning, Liz was on her laptop with her morning coffee, getting ready to start her day, when a feeling of total dread washed over her, building into an intense crushing pain across her chest, neck and shoulders down her arms and even into her jaw. Struggling to breathe, Liz eventually collapsed on the floor from the sheer pain of it all, clutching her armpits and curled up in a ball.

“I feel much calmer now as a person and this is in part down to the relaxation I’ve built into my life after my heart event,” she says. “I’ve also set up my own house plant business called Node, which I run from my standing desk at home.”

“I tried to pass it off as nothing at first, but my partner forced me to go to the hospital,” she says. “I had even experienced something similar twice before and just put it down to stress.” It wasn’t until some time later, after spending a week in Christchurch Public Hospital because of an abnormal blood test, that Liz found out she had suffered a minor heart attack. Liz had no risk factors or family history of heart disease and a number of further medical tests came back all clear. “The doctors concluded that it was possible that a migraine medication I’d been prescribed may have been the problem as it narrows blood vessels,” she says. Since suffering her heart event just one month before the global Covid-19 pandemic, life looks a little different for Liz

Besides living a more relaxed lifestyle, Liz now does regular exercise and goes for walks every day in order to meet the physical activity needs of a young person’s body. “I’m only 33 and I’ve been through a lot, but I’m always curious to know more about myself and to understand what caused my life to almost end. Only then can I learn to manage how I respond to the challenges I encounter.” Shortly after her own heart experience, Liz’s stepfather sadly passed away from an unexpected heart attack, and she was devastated that she couldn’t attend his funeral in the US due to Covid-19. “He was like a father to me, and I really want to get the message out that this type of thing can happen to anyone at any moment,” she says. “Only by taking preventative measures with your lifestyle can you take back control.” Heart disease is New Zealand’s single biggest killer, claiming the lives of more than 6,700 New Zealanders every year – that’s one person every 90 minutes. Heart attacks can happen to anyone at any time of their life. Warning signs of a heart attack include chest discomfort, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, and nausea. Women can experience other less obvious symptoms including discomfort in the upper back, nausea, sweating, and unusual fatigue. Acting quickly and dialling 111 saves lives. The Heart Foundation is New Zealand’s heart charity leading the fight against heart disease and has invested more than $82 million into ground-breaking heart research since 1968. MR OPINIONATOR THIS ARTICLE IS A COUPLE OF “FARQS”. Farq 1: Why do I love the Mighty Vodafone Warriors when, so often, they break my heart? Answer: Masochist: “(in general use) a person who enjoys an activity that appears to be painful or tedious. Eg. “what kind of masochist would take part in such an experiment?” If you have a better explanation, I’m all ears. Farq 2: Why do Christians hate the LGBTQ community? Answer: I start with a statement that I am in total support of any person’s right to be whatever they are and whatever they want to be. It follows, in Mr Opinionator’s book, that every person is entitled to dignity and respect. Why should I have any right to look down on someone who is gay etc? Now, pardon me if I have this wrong but I thought Christian dogma required their God to be omniscient and omnipotent; think of the “power of prayer”. One might think, then, that if someone is in the rainbow community, their loving God put them there and, évidemment, it was not a mistake. The Christian answer to that is to assert that mankind makes choices after God has laid the groundwork; that is consistent with, for example, “homosexual conversion therapy” or “Pray the gay away”. God makes you a blokey bloke but, through some very poor life choices, you are, in fact, attracted to blokes. This way, you see, it’s not God’s fault. In the transgender sphere, the Governor of Alabama puts it succinctly: “If the good Lord makes you a boy when you’re born, then you’re a boy; if the good Lord makes you a girl when you’re born, then you’re a girl”, so be buggered with those liberal ideas of allowing hormone treatment, counselling and the like to enable transitioning. If I could finish the Governor’s succinct denial of medical science: “… so, if you were born with a penis, God doesn’t want you to make poor life choices and start thinking you’re a girl.” That school of thought (it’s all a matter of personal choice and self-discipline) is consistent with Proverbs 19:21: “Man proposes, but God disposes”. The Bible is saying that a mortal may make plans but God will decide if a plan comes to fruition. So, when a mortal starts making those poor life choices and starts heading towards homosexuality or transitioning, surely the omniscient and omnipotent God considers the situation and acts? And, who better for Him to act through than Christians such as Governor Ivey or the Supreme Court of the United States? I think there’s a deeper motive behind Christians’ aversion to gays etc. In Genesis 1:27 (yes, dear readers, know your enemy), we find: “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” What we can’t have, then, is some suggestion that God created people within the LGBTQ community because that, it seems, would be bad for God’s image. On the other hand … I suppose we could consider the scientific angle. Christians don’t like science; think Big Bang v. Genesis’ 6 days, for example. Think God’s infallibility v. all the extinctions over time. Of course, I’m not a scientist of any description (I’m too lucid) but there seems to be an overwhelming amount of research “out there” that homosexuality is not a choice. According to my friend, Wikipedia: “Scientists do not yet know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorize that it is caused by a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences and do not view it as a choice”.

And being transgender (can you be transgender or would you be “transgender-inclined”?) doesn’t seem to be a choice thing. I’ve checked out many articles on the subject and I’d suggest the jury has come back with a not guilty on choice. It seems the proper description is “gender dysphoria”, which usually means a difficulty in identifying with the biological sex in an individual. “Studies suggest that gender dysphoria may have biological causes associated with the development of gender identity before birth but it is, most certainly, not a choice thing” (comes from some article I was reading). Accordingly, as soon as it is not a choice, it is no more than a human condition amongst the myriad of human conditions. Some conditions, we can treat, if that would improve the life of the “sufferer”. Someone born with a large birthmark over the face might have treatment by way of surgery to alleviate the condition. Someone born with a misshapen skull might have surgery to restore the shape. Some conditions cannot be treated, eg. homosexuality unless it was a particularly powerful prayer. So, with gender dysphoria, as far as I can see, we have a condition where a fellow human’s being is wildly at odds with the genitals appearing on their body and asks for help to be reassigned. It’s no different, in concept, from having your skull shape corrected; make my life better for me. In the USA, crazy Christian Republicans, vying for nominations right now or looking a couple of years ahead (de Santis), are trying to outdo their crazy competitors to be the most antitrans poli on the campaign trail. Governor Ivey, for example, has passed legislation threatening 10 years jail time for helping trans-kids deal with their condition – 10 years! No wonder John Oliver called her a ”bad person”. Why can’t they live and let live, those bad people? And it gets worse as they feel enabled to treat the LGBTQ community as lesser beings. I have just seen a case form the States where a Judge has affirmed a teacher’s right to “misgender trans students”. It seems the dust-up arose from the school’s policy requiring teachers to refer to students by their preferred first name and pronouns while prohibiting teachers from, possibly, outing the students to parents etc by using the student’s preferred name and pronouns in outside communications. The teacher’s argument was that God assigns people genders through their genitalia and therefore she can only use names and pronouns in accordance with students’ records. According to “LGBTQ Nation”: “District Judge Holly Teeter, appointed by Donald Trump, blocked the LGBTQ antidiscrimination policies, stating in her opinion that the “Plaintiff believes that addressing students one way at school and a different way when speaking to their parents is dishonest,” which “violates her sincere religious beliefs.” Words fail me.

Mid Winter Christmas

134

With the colder months upon us, days becoming shorter (and darker) and our favorite summer fruits and vegetables now out of season, we all need a bit of a pick me up. Enter a new reason to celebrate: Mid-Winter Christmas.

We’re thinking delicious mulled wine, succulent roast turkey and all the fixings. Heck, you could even put on the Christmas lights and music to really set the scene.

THE MEAT We’re heading to Canter Valley for all our meat needs - who specialize in turkey, duck, quail, poussin and for those who are feeling a bit spicy - turducken. Our pick for the main event is Turkey and Canter Valley grow and process their quality, free-range turkeys ready for you to prepare a culinary masterpiece. cantervalley.co.nz

THE FISH Salmon can be used in many ways for your mid winter Christmas (we’re thinking smoked salmon blinis with cream cheese and dill), eaten cold or hot, salmon can be a great alternative for those that don’t eat ham or turkey. Salmon Heaven does two flavored variants - cracked black pepper and a seasonal spice variant which has a hint of chili for those wanting that extra ‘kick’. All their salmon is sea run from Stewart Island and is arguably the best salmon in New Zealand. Salmon lovers can rejoice visiting Salmon Heaven, trying their gourmet salmon pie, salmon pizza and salmon pate as well as some local artisan products. salmonheaven.nz

THE WINE A warming mulled wine is always welcome at this time of the year. Choose a bottle of your favorite Merlot and heat it gently over a low heat, you don’t want it to boil or get too hot as this will lose the alcohol. Add in some spices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, ginger, whatever tickles your fancy and let those aromas fill the room!

HILTON LAKE TAUPO: THE PERFECT WINTER STAYCATION LAKE TAUPO IS A SCENIC PLAYGROUND OF DIVERSE LANDSCAPES SITUATED HALFWAY BETWEEN THE BIG SMOKE OF AUCKLAND AND OUR CAPITAL CITY WELLINGTON.

It’s not hard to see why Taupo is such a popular holiday destination with its geothermal attractions (the hot pools are a must), picturesque hikes and walks; (brave the Tongariro Crossing if you’re game) varying restaurants, bistros, and cafes. But when one visits Taupo, we were recommended that one must stay at Hilton Lake Taupo. The resort-style heritage hotel was built in 1889 and is located a quick 10-minute drive from the town’s main centre. After a seamless check in we explored our new home for the next day: a spacious apartment-style room complete with a private balcony to take in the views (on a clear day, you can see Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngāuruhoe), and a luxury bathroom with a generous sized tub. We were immediately thrilled by our new haven. We were animated to check out the hotel’s inhouse restaurant, Bistro Lago, which had been highly recommended, and we were not disappointed. With elevated views over the lake, quality produce and a seasonal menu, Bistro Lago is a favourite among locals. While enjoying some of the best views in town, we loved taking in the ambience created by the Bistro’s unique decor. With leather furnishings and a welcoming warm open fire, this was the perfect spot to spend a few hours on a cold winter’s day. Bistro Largo is all about fresh, locally

sourced produce that’s been carefully crafted into worldclass dishes. The confit lamb rib entree was one of those dishes that will stay with me for a long time - perfectly tender meat with well-balanced flavours was paired beautifully with a locally brewed LakeMan Hairy Hop IPA. Bistro Lago’s Executive Chef Adrian Walker, works closely with Nourish Group Executive Chef Gareth Stewart to create a menu that caters to everyone, showcasing the very best the region has to offer. With full tummies and happy hearts after our dining experience, we went off to take a soak and jump into bed. Breakfast was made easy as we headed back to Bistro Lago to enjoy their ‘bottomless’ breakfast - unlimited dishes to choose from (including the standard freshly baked goods). Our favourites were the home-made pancakes and the classic House-made Mince.

The service staff at Hilton Lake Taupo are incredible accommodating and this was made super simple with the text service provided. We just needed to make contact with the front desk to organise dinner reservations, towels, and find out what time housekeeping could come. It was made seamless and hassle free. It’s easy to see why Hilton Lake Taupo is the ‘must stay’ accommodation choice, as it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring, or the ideal location to spend a bit of self-care time. With heated swimming pools, a tennis court and fitness centre, you truly won’t want to leave.

READING BETWEEN THE WINES The wine industry in New Zealand has achieved remarkable success, and we have garnered an international reputation as a winemaker’s paradise, producing an envious amount of delicate, robust, tangy and subtle wines. We are lucky that our long growing season and cool climate make for great grape-growing conditions, so we’re able to produce some distinctive, premium-quality wines. But what makes a wine unique? We’ve selected our top wineries to showcase this issue. FROMM WINERY Marlborough is a world famous wine growing region, and Fromm Winery are all about favoring grape quality over quantity. From the beginning, they have been very conscientious about the health of their vineyards, not for commercial or publicity reasons, rather for genuine concern for the lands, plants, environment and health of their team. The result? Beautiful, pure organic wines.

DE’LONGHI FROM BEAN TO CUP WITH ANNABEL & ROSE LANGBEIN

De’Longhi Fully Automatic Primadonna Soul: RRP $2769.99

Annabel and Rose Langbein are long-time fans of De’Longhi coffee machines, having had them in the family for many years. We aren’t surprised, with the extensive range of Italian-made appliances offering a machine for every preference and lifestyle. However when it comes to their favourite- they’re worlds apart. Whilst Annabel loves the ease of fully automatic, Rose prefers the bespoke abilities that only manual can offer. “My De’Longhi Primadonna Soul coffee machine is truly a game changer — even Ted (the ultimate coffee connoisseur) has been converted. The ability to create such high-quality, barista grade coffee at the touch of a button is fantastic, whilst creating minimal waste too — giving me just the coffee fix that I can feel good about, to support my busy lifestyle.” Says Annabel. “Don’t get me wrong- when I’m staying with Annabel, I love how quickly her machine can fill the cups of the entire family and it tastes as good as any cafe coffee you could find, however my heart is truly in the craft” says Rose, “Making coffee on my La Specialista Arte enables me to customise it exactly how I like it. I’m living in Portugal at the moment and there is nothing better than sitting by the

window, watching the sunrise across beautiful Lisbon with a fresh brew in hand. I don’t think I could ever go back to anything else now- I’ve even stopped buying it from cafe’s and prefer to make my own in a reusable cup before I head out the door.” delonghi.com

TALKING ‘POSITIVE LUXURY’ WITH LYZADIE DESIGN STUDIO ADDING BEAUTY AND MEANING TO LIFE LyZadie Design Studio is about adding beauty and meaning to life, and to spaces. Founded by Lyzadie Renault 4 years ago, it is a positive luxury furniture and homeware design studio. We sat down with Founder Lyzadie Renault to discuss where she finds inspiration and the story behind this unique business. What is the story behind LyZadie Design Studio? I design collections, furniture, objects for the home, lighting, etc inspired by this land and then I look for the ideal maker in New Zealand to bring the ideas to life. I love collaborating with local makers and in doing so supporting them. Supporting local makers is important to me, as a business ethos as it is about enriching our community, giving it value, inspiring young or old makers to learn that craft. The ethical and most of the time natural materials are very important in both the design process and the prototyping stage. Because of my architectural background and also my parents’ influence, I am obsessed with materiality - with real materials. I want to be in connection with nature in my home and I find that by using these raw materials that connection is here. During the design process I juggle back and forth between the materials and the method and that’s where the makers’ input is incredibly rich and unique. I also design buildings as my training is as an architect first. Furniture, lighting and product design came later on. The architecture and the design areas are quite different yet similar, as they inform each other, nurture each other and I have found that the buildings I design are becoming richer in depth now after starting LyZadie Design Studio and the furniture and products have an architectural edge to them. We pride ourselves in being a ‘positive luxury’ - conscious design, responsible design Studio. As designers, we have a responsibility to be conscious in creating the spaces, the products that inhabit our world, our communities. Why did you start LyZadie Design Studio? Architecture: LyZadie Design Furniture & Homeware: LyZadie Design Studio Fashion: Paris Georgia Jewelry: Zoe&Morgan Flower Arrangement: White Tree Floral Design Photography: Tim Marshall

I felt that we could make fine furniture here in New Zealand which had a unique design language reflecting the unique culture, landscape, and art of New Zealand.

LIFESTYLE

What tips do you have for those looking to redo their space? Be clear on what you want to create, how you want to inhabit the space, bring in your own vision with that of a talented designer. I would highly recommend using an interior designer. I am a great architect and furniture, lighting and product designer but when it comes to interior design not so good. It’s important to know when to use an expert to add value to your spaces. Art transforms a space, adds so much richness to a space, I would highly recommend investing in beautiful pieces that speak to you. What would you like Eye readers to know about you, as a person?

People in New Zealand love overseas brands, European brands when they want fine quality furniture and I thought to myself why can’t we design and make furniture that can compete with those top brands right here in New Zealand! That’s how it all started with that idea then I had to create the business from scratch. It’s still evolving, and growing. In the process I have fallen in love with creating value in craftsmanship, and that’s why I talk a lot about the makers. Making a piece of furniture is a skill, an art, which is rare and that is of great value to me. I want to share that with our customers, architects, interior designers and also inspiring young people to follow that path if they love to make things with their hands. We don’t value craftsmanship as much as they do for example in Italy or France and that’s something I would love to change. Where do you find inspiration? Everywhere and nowhere. I am inspired by many things in life. I see beauty everywhere in nature, in people, in experiences. I love music, literature, art, design, dance, architecture, animals, nature, and people’s passion. Something has to grab me deep in my soul at a particular time, and at that particular time, music might be playing whilst I am in nature with people I love and all of a sudden I see, feel, and sense a glimpse of an idea for a collection. What I mean by nowhere is that when I start sketching a new collection I have to pull back from that inspiration and weave something new, it’s a kind of detachment, a pulling away from the inspiration so I can create something unique, so I can abstract it into a new form, materiality. What is your current favourite piece? My current favourite pieces are the SOULWINDOW Armoire and Credenza. This collection is loaded with meanings, both positive and negative, of the last 2 years we have just been through with the Covid pandemic. It is a time of digging through many layers of one’s life, one’s soul, with the good and the ugly, which is quite challenging, but then from that a new perspective is born, a new story of oneself. A bit like the phoenix burning and then being reborn.

Wellbeing is so important to me as a woman, mother, architect, designer, business woman, sports person, friend and more. It is important for me to stay grounded, to nurture myself – mind, body and soul. I find I am a better person for it but also I am a lot more creative and productive. So going out in nature, spending time with quality friends, family and pets, doing sports, eating and sharing beautiful food with friends or family, listening to music brings me back to me and I feel energized afterwards and ready to tackle the next thing. Life is full of ups and downs and every area of one’s life is connected so if you don’t look after yourself, areas like your friendships or your work will suffer. It loops back to inspiring me to create beautiful and meaningful objects that are good for the planet and for people.

AN IRONCLAD PROMISE CHANGING THE GAME FOR COOKING, THIS FAMILY BUSINESS IS ON A MISSION TO CREATE KITCHENWARE THAT IS BETTER FOR YOU AND THE PLANET The Ironclad Co are providing a welcome disruption to today’s kitchenware market (largely dominated by cheap imports and products that last a year, or even less in some instances). They offer the only cast iron cookware manufactured here in Aotearoa, New Zealand with a unique Three Generation Guarantee™️. Ironclad’s core Legacy Pan (a family-sized 28cm cast iron skillet) is fondly known as the mother of all cookware, accompanied by her slightly smaller but way cuter sibling - The Lil’ Legacy Pan. To complete the Legacy range (for now), this innovative kiwi business has just launched the much awaited Old Dutch Ironclad’s take on a 4.5 litre, incredibly versatile Dutch oven which has an impressive range of cooking functions. From the get-go, Ironclad’s founders (all of whom hailed originally from the creative services industry) wanted to create something special, a tangible product that could become a part of everyday life. Something to enrich your daily routine, be good for you but also good for the planet. While brainstorming this concept one evening, co-founder Kate Slavin was cooking with a set of cast iron pans that had been handed down through her husband Levi’s family for generations. And that’s when the lightbulb moment happened - “Why not a cast iron pan!?” From there, serious research and product development started and the more they discovered, the more they were sure that they’d landed on the perfect concept. Cast iron ticked all the boxes, despite what had seemed like an idealistic mission. As they researched the cookware market, Kate and Levi, alongside third co-founder Joe Carter, questioned why and how cast iron skillets are sold pre-seasoned and black - rather than in their raw, beautifully silver form - and they couldn’t find a good answer. Way back when, people had really enjoyed the experience of pre-seasoning their own family heirlooms. Then mass production appeared on the scene and, well, things took a turn for the worse. So, the team decided to sell their cast iron products unseasoned this way they could ensure there were no unnecessary dyes, nasty chemicals, paints, or enamels in their products.

Ironclad cookware is hand-poured and hand-finished from high-grade, recycled iron. Nothing is taken from the ground to make any of their cast iron products (hello, more circular economy). Each product is also incredibly long-lasting, and the beauty is that the more you use it, the better it gets. Each New Zealand Legacy product comes with a bottle of Sauvignon grapeseed oil, as well as a full set of instructions on how to pre-season and lovingly care for your Ironclad cookware for generations to come. To complement their cookware, Ironclad partner with like-minded, small kiwi businesses and some of New Zealand’s best craftspeople to offer a range of high quality kitchenware and camp accessories - from oven mitts to aprons, and chef’s knives to coffee tumblers. All of these products are hand-made in small quantities to order, avoiding the waste that comes from mass production. While this may not be as economically savvy, it’s way better for the planet. And that’s really important to the Ironclad team. After having seen a higher-than-expected level of demand from the international market, and in keeping with their desire to reduce the impacts of global shipping while supporting local, Ironclad have recently landed in Sydney with Australian-made cast iron cookware. Having launched gently with their core Legacy Pan, the Australian business will very soon be bringing new Australian made products to market including The Old Dutch, The Lil’ Legacy Pan and a kitchen and camping range curated especially for the Australian market. It is Ironclad’s mission to create essential, everyday cookware and kitchen goodies that are better for you, and better for the planet. Sustainability and returning to the traditional, more hand-crafted way of making things is at the heart of everything they do. Having the world’s longest cookware guarantee isn’t just a marketing statement – this promise to their customers underpins Ironclad’s brand ethos around creating products that will last, and last, and last for generations to come. ironcladpan.com

MODEL TALK SPOTLIGHT ON: ANNA CABATAY FROM BINTANG MODELS Q. How long have you been modelling? I started modelling here in New Zealand about three years ago, but before that I loved participating in pageants back in the Philippine when I was 16. Q. Tell us about your modelling career, how did you get into it?

Ever since I was young I knew I always wanted to become a model and now that I am, it doesn’t seem real! I am so proud to have worked for some Netflix and Amazon television series and I’ve had the chance to walk for Pacific Fusion Fashion Show and Whiteclife Fashion Show. I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved and am so excited for the future. Q. What’s been a career highlight for you? For me it was so memorable to walk at the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show - it was packed with a great audience and it was the first show I’ve experienced with so many eyes on me! I’m so thankful to the designer, Vivian Arthur Hosking-Aue, and the friendship we formed. Q. What’s your best modelling tip? bintangmodels.com

WOMEN CAN DO IT ALL THERE IS AN UNFORTUNATE STIGMA AROUND WOMEN WORKING IN, WHAT IS TYPICALLY SEEN AS A ‘MAN’S WORLD’. This, coupled with the ‘lad culture’ surrounding motorsport, makes Chrissi Anderson even more impressive. A role model that proves women can do it all. Chrissi had dabbled previously with speed events, winning a Manfeild race on her Aprilia RSV and taking out the Chesters Drags. But tootling around Hampton Downs on club days seemed to be light years from attempting a record. Her first run at Goudies was astride her favored Ducati 1198SP. There is a run-up distance of approximately three kms before the competitors hit the timed quarter mile, so Chrissi had the 170hp Italian sitting on 199kmh. Having got her driver’s license at only 15 years old (in fact, she got her bike license first), Chrissy had been riding bikes for years before she started doing track times at Hampton Downs, in which she won a pink stiletto shoe award for being the fastest female in her first year of joining. She was credited with 311.0 km/h for her fastest one-way run and 291.85 km/h for the two-way average. This would be enough for most drivers, but Chrissi knows there’s more to be had.

“Even though they only officially clocked me at 311.0 km/h at the Landspeed NZ event, the fastest speed on the car telemetry was 334km/h and I hope to be faster next year” Chrissi is now officially New Zealand’s fastest women on two and four wheels and is already making plans for next year, Misogyny is a defining factor in the experiences of so many women in motorsport and it’s safe to say that Chrissi breaks down these barriers. The adrenaline chaser loves anything from off-roading (turbo Polaris RZR), Targa Rally (co-driving reading pace notes), shooting clays (known for her great shot) and so much more. “While you definitely cannot force hobbies on people and can’t make certain people like certain things…on purpose, what you can do is let others see how badass their life is because of motorsports and show them exactly what they’re missing out on.” Chrissi notes. “Help create that positive, encouraging environment for new enthusiasts, and by doing so, you’ll be helping influence a hobby that could potentially craft a life into something incredibly fulfilling. All you need to do is show them the window.”
