We have had a lot of fun putting this issue together for you! Our cover shot with Angela Stone from The Real Housewives of Auckland was shot at Fireworks on Wynyard Quarter, she is wearing a stunning Trelise Cooper coat and carrying our favourite weekender bags from Coast. Inside this issue on page 20 to 21 you can read about what Aucklanders think of The Real Housewives of Auckland. Reality TV shows have become hugely popular and the addiction that takes place with the audience fascinates me. Our flip cover features an elegant Eisch decanter, a beautiful gift for anyone with a passion for a little bit of luxury. We photographed the decanter on top of some stunning flowers from Blush Flowers in Parnell. Also in this issue, we feature two well established and successful New Zealand companies. Rembrandt, who represent quality and style, celebrate 70 years on page 56 to 59 and Kaiwaka Clothing Co, established in 1971 whose products are guaranteed for life are on page 60 to 63. It is a sign of their success that both companies are still operated by the original founding family members. If you are tired of the cold days and nights why not take a quick trip away? Right on our doorstep, we have some beautiful luxury lodges, read about them on page 50 to 61 A friend recently told me it is disrespectful not to enjoy every day. Enjoying each moment is actually the real luxury in life.

Making Sense of Bullying IN A CYBER-SOCIETY by JESSICA-BELLE GREER & PRISCILLA SOUTHCOMBE

20

T

hese days, everyone has an opinion. As social media has embedded itself in our everyday lives, we now also have a soapbox from which to voice these opinion to the world. This is not only limited to Facebook and Twitter, online commenting allows anyone to say their piece with complete anonymity. And in some cases, this entices people to go past simply expressing their views and instead, engage in bullying behaviour. The term bullying is heavily weighted, carrying varying connotations and uncomfortable experiences for everyone. Nowadays, it is undisputed that bullying is more than physical torment. The emotional toll of verbal attacks is welldocumented. Anxiety, depression and in some cases, even suicide, are the unfortunate consequences of bullying. “They’re just jealous” is a phrase many parents tell their young and not so young children when they slump into the couch and tell of the bullying that happened to them that day. If only it was that simple. As more organisations look into bullying, it is becoming increasingly clear that we need to rewire how we think about it. A recent myth-busting study has shown that bullies actually have high levels of self-esteem. The bullies are popular, envied, and in environments that favour dominant behaviours, such as during the transient time at intermediate school. A troubling MRI study has also shown that bullies feel pleasure when they hurt others. The scan showed that areas of the brain associated with reward and pleasure lit up when the bullies were shown images of others being hurt. As awful as it is, bullying is in all societies, even ancient ones. An ancient Greek writer, Archilochus of Paros, had such sharp wit his writing drove an entire family to suicide. A study of child bullying across twenty-eight countries confirmed that bullying is everywhere to varying degrees. Indeed, bullying has been with us since hunter-gatherer times and can naturally occur amongst a group of toddlers. However, certain cultures can unwittingly encourage bullies even more by having high expectations of how to look or behave.

Every month, ten thousand people type into Google: “Am I ugly?” It’s a statistic shared by Global Director of the Dove Self-Esteem Project, Meaghan Ramsey, during a Ted Talk about the worldwide issue of self-esteem. Dove’s research endeavours have shown that 17 per cent of women do not show up to job interviews if they think they don’t look right on the day. These are just some of many troubling statistics telling us that bullying and self-esteem issues are not confined to the schoolyard. Workplace bullying costs businesses tens of millions of dollars, not to mention serious concerns for the mental and physical health of workers. A New Zealand study has shown that those who had experienced bullying within the last five years, but were not currently experiencing it, still reported worse health than those who had never been bullied. Another study has shown that even if workers have not been bullied themselves, they still suffer from bearing witness. And, even if an employee’s job has great perks, they can’t combat the negative effects of bullying. Bullying is chastised and often categorised as limited to teenage girls and high school woes. As we scramble to make sense of bullying it is achingly clear that bullying is everyone’s problem. The rise of the internet has created a form of cyber bullying that has transpired into normality for people of all ages - the

comment section. This is especially true for those in the public arena, from A-List celebrities to the stars of viral videos. Hiding behind a computer screen, many people leave comments that can only be described as verbal bullying. So, what is about hiding behind a computer screen that makes voicing these opinions okay? These people are sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers as well. What may seem to be a fleeting comment can have serious long-term impacts. It is time to acknowledge the consequences of cyberbullying and take a stand. Before posting a negative opinion, think of the person behind the ad, television series or even Hollywood blockbuster. Would you be comfortable saying the same words to their face? How you feel if your looks and actions were scrutinised in the same manner? Or perhaps your loved ones? This is all too familiar for Suzy Heazlewood who became victim to an online hate campaign after simply appearing in an infomercial. She struggled not to internalise the cruel comments with people all over New Zealand chiming in to comment on her physical appearance. As a patron of Angels of Hope, Suzy shares her story and educates teenagers and adults on the very real effects of cyberbullying.

Suzy Says No

M

eeting Suzy Heazlewood is like meeting a vivacious, blond whirlwind. She arrives at 100 miles an hour, all fired up about her empowerment group, ‘Bringing Back the Sistahood’, her skincare range ‘Suzy H’ and her role as Australasian Patron for ‘Angels Hope,’ an anti-bullying organization for children and young adults. Yet as recently as three years ago, Suzy was suffering from severe depression after experiencing an online hate campaign that caused her to almost take her life. You may remember Suzy on our TV screens for years as the face of a well known health and beauty product. At first it was a wonderful job. Having been a postie on and off for 28 years she firmly believed in the product and enjoyed fronting it for the public.

22

But a year into her contract, Suzy stumbled upon some nasty online comments about the way she looked. “I tried to let it wash over me as I know people in the public eye get lots of unwanted attention, no matter who they are, but it was hard. I couldn’t stop reading the terrible things people were saying. They were posting things like, ‘I hate her voice,’ or, ‘I’d blow her face up if I saw her in public.’ It became very personal, and started to affect my family too. Then it spread into the public arena. I was being scrutinised negatively anywhere I went. It got to the point where I felt like Charlotte Dawson had when she knew she had to leave NZ (in fact Charlotte got in touch later on.) We decided to move to Australia and I got a job showcasing a makeup brand at a big

pharmacy chain in the Gold Coast.” For two years Suzy commuted back and forth to film the ads. But the smear campaign didn’t stop. “Australian women were fine but when I got back to New Zealand, women would see me demonstrating and then blog online: ‘OMG she looks so old in the flesh.’ I got called ugly, crepey and that I wouldn’t need a mask for Halloween. Although I was putting on a brave face on the outside I was dying inside. I’d been putting up with this for seven years, my self esteem was at rock bottom and my son Jim decided he was going to write my resignation letter.” After quitting her TV contract, Suzy went public with her story on 20/20 in October 2013. “I needed to share my ordeal and to say that this was not OK.”

something with my energy and my story and decided to do two major things at once – create a Sistahood community and create my own brand. I phoned Jack (the scientist I’d been working with at the pharmacy on product development) and asked him to make me a range. Then I set about to develop a Sista-hood which would be an antibullying community. I wanted to get the message out to women that we can rise above any hardships we encounter. And at the same time I wanted to help women appreciate what they see in the mirror. So many women would come up to me at the pharmacy and immediately point out their flaws. I wanted to help them feel good about themselves.” ‘Bringing Back the Sistahood’ was born, a platform for women to share their voices to raise women up, rather than put them down, along with Suzy H skincare, an affordable clinical-grade range. Since forming the Sistahood, Suzy has been inundated with well wishes from women in both NZ and Australia. “The outpouring of love has been huge and it has restored my faith in women and in my country.” Many men also resonated with her anti-bullying message. Well known radio DJ and comedian Willy de Wit was one of them. Sharing an unlikely connection – for a time Willy had become a postie to get fitter and healthier when

recovering from an illness - Willy heard her anti-bullying message and in March 2015 got in touch to offer his support. They became instant firm friends and he is now the Brand Manager for Suzy H. Suzy has recently become the Patron of ‘Angels Hope’ (following on from Charlotte Dawson). ‘Angels Hope’ is an Australian non-profit anti-bullying organization, soon to launch in New Zealand, that provides schools with the necessary equipment to teach students and teachers about the effects of bullying. “We also lobby in Australia to get the law changed to make bullying a criminal offense.” Suzy promotes her Sistahood antibullying message and now also Angels Hope, alongside her skincare range. In keeping with her support, all proceeds of the Suzy H Coconut Oil go to Angels Hope and Key to Life Trust NZ Youth Advocacy and Suicide Prevention. She hopes to eventually talk in schools, educating students about the damage done through bullying and help to promote suicide prevention. Suzy’s final word, “You can think what you like about someone but the minute you verbalise it you have an effect, so be careful what you say to others. Do you really want someone else’s blood on your hands?”

suzyh.com

Suzy Heazlewood Charlotte Dawson who had also experienced online abuse, saw the 20/20 episode and reached out to Suzy. Her message, ‘Don’t let the haters get you down.’ “Voicing publicly what was going on was empowering and it helped to purge the pain I’d been carrying for so long. I felt like I was finally starting to get on top of things.” But then the unthinkable happened with Charlotte committing suicide in early 2014. Once again Suzy spiralled downwards. “It seemed like Charlotte was the only one who had understood and I thought that if she’d caved in to the abuse, I wasn’t sure how I could rise above it.” Once again her family came to the rescue with her son getting her into counselling and slowly but surely she started to heal. “I needed to do

W

ith two Auckland sanctuaries in Herne Bay and Takapuna, White Spa + Float Lounge offers positive and mindful bespoke beauty, tailored treatments and curative floatation therapy. Specialising in a number of treatments, White leads the way in holistic and mindful beauty on every level. White’s services are eons away from being just skin deep; the environment is conducive to restoration and relaxation. Owners Lani Allard of the Spa and Emma Robins of the Float Lounge lead with a deep passion for taking you to a place of peace and tranquillity, a haven where you relax your body, soothe your mind and rejuvenate your spirit, where you can pamper, unwind and renew. The team of experienced therapists fit like gloves with White’s mindful beauty philosophy. In booking a facial your skin becomes their skin, nurtured in a treatment created exclusively for your own truth. After careful analysis either a one off appointment or prolonged programme is devised, with your therapist clearly illuminating you on the process she is taking you and your skin through. The corrective therapy will not just affect positive change in your skin’s condition, but greatly give to your confidence.

28

Looking your best makes you feel better within yourself, and the team are on hand to fulfill every covet. Brows and lashes are given love with tidy-ups including shaping, trimming and a customised brow programme. All tinting uses vegetable-based colours, with White’s lash extension system ensuring minimal lash loss in working with the natural hair growth cycle and supplying support products. White put a premium on nail care, offering every imaginable treatment to keep your nails lovely-looking. From the simpler manicures and pedicures to the absolute works with paraffin treatments, the skilled technicians also offer gel nail application. Again ensuring all big 5 and chemical free products. Organic Tanning at White is top notch, promising a streak free and natural tan with no orange hue or residual odour – the base is purely velvet mother nature, using cacao (chocolate) to give you a perfectly rich colour. The colour is specially formulated to adapt to individual skin tones and rather than drying your skin out, the hydrating formula leaves it nourished as well as glowing. Time efficient and thorough, the experienced waxing therapists do all in their ability to create comfort for you when waxing at White. With combination offers available, all areas of

the body are fastidiously tended to ensuring you are gratified with the results. The heavenly handed massage therapists work out tension and stress from your muscles in an aromatherapy, relaxation, deep tissue, hot stone or crystal therapy massage. Specific areas needing work can be focused on in a tailored treatment made up for what your body needs with your preferred pressure decided upon. Body treatments are available using body butters, lotions and sugar rubs straight from the islands, cocooning your body in warmth and harmony to make you feel better both inside and out. And group packages are available too, with White Hot Prices when you share in services with your friends at the spa. More and more men are placing an importance on how they feel and look, and White caters to this in making them feel just as at ease and welcome as the female clientele. Couturier treatments range from waxing to nail care to massages and facials, with combination therapies for more complete care. White leads the way in offering floatation therapy, the ultimate in relaxation and healing. Based on a revolutionary scientific approach to deep relaxation called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique – aptly termed REST – floatation eliminates all external stress stimuli and limits sensory input, bestowing you the ultimate escape. In complete darkness and silence, floating liberates substantial areas of your brain to be free from the stress and strains that often drain you of mental and physical energy. Your brain slows to a state of serenity, giving an inner de-cluttering and purifying of your thoughts, emotions and spirit to refresh and strengthen your energy and wellbeing. Just one hour in our pods is equivalent to up to eight hours deep sleep! And White uses a simple set of principles when sourcing and selecting their products; optimum visible results must be achieved, and they have to be as organic, bio dynamic and sustainable as possible. All the product lines used, be it body butters, anti-bacterials or even cleaning products, are as organic and from the purest origins that can possibly be sourced. Therefore, you can trust you are contributing both wholly and ethically to your wellbeing. There is no beauty therapy or relaxation experience quite like White. White is a new beginning.

Facial Rejuvenation, Aesthetics and the Mid-face by DR. TRISTAN DE CHALAIN

MSc. MBCnB. FCSSA. FRCSC. FRACS.

T

hree things happen to the face as we age. Firstly, the tissue descends with gravity; secondly, we lose fat in the deeper planes and elasticity in the skin and supporting structures and thirdly, we develop wrinkles and creases. The bad news is that these changes, which inevitably mark the passage of time, are, to some degree almost inevitable. The good news is that something can be done to reduce and delay them. At what stage in your life these changes start to become a problem for you, is partly due to your genetics and lifestyle choices, (which determine how rapidly you age) and partly due to your attitude. For most faces, both male and female, one of the most prized beauty assets is a well-contoured, full cheek. This sets off the eyes, smooths the lid-cheek junction and helps to suspend the tissues around the mouth. Individuals with a flat mid-cheek region tend to show aging changes earlier and dissatisfaction with this area of the face is a common complaint heard in my office. For the younger patient, or those with very deficient mid-face bony support, facial implants are an excellent consideration. These are easily placed, may consist of solid silicone or a better-integrated material such as Porex®, or even the patient’s own, autologous tissue such as fat and dermis. Either will give a convincing fullness and contour to the face and greatly improve the aesthetics of the area. It is a particularly good procedure for those considering having baggy, wrinkled lower eyelids treated; in many such cases there is a deficiency of mid-cheek fullness and a lengthening of the lower eyelid, with an obvious lid/cheek junction zone as well, all of which can be addressed by a simple mid-face lift. For the face which has been injured, leading to loss of symmetry, or the aging face where there has been both wasting of native fat pads, soft tissue such as muscle and even bone, plus tissue slumping (known as “ptosis”) and sagging. All these can be reversed by performing a mid-face lift, or by placement of a cheek implant and sometimes, by both. A mid-face lift is not a true face-lift, although it does literally, lift the face. Where a classic face and neck-lift requires an incision along the contour of the ear and up into the hairline behind the ear, and addresses mainly the lateral cheek, the neck and the jawline, the mid-face lift is performed through the lower eyelid and the space behind the top lip and addresses the central face, on either side of the nose, out to the outer corner of the eye and the cheekbones. It is a virtually undetectable procedure that can literally take years off a face, rejuvenate the eyes and lift the corners of the mouth, yet still make the patient look like nothing more than a better, more youthful version of themselves, rather than someone else, or what’s worse, someone who’s had too much surgery. Alternatively, depending on the patient’s wishes, properly planned and executed, mid-face lifting with implants can make a bland face appear exotic and exciting. In selected cases, a mid-face lift can easily be combined with a classic face and neck lift. This is one group of procedures you need to find out more about, but as not many surgeons perform the surgery, do your research before committing.

o you have dark patches on your skin, especially on your face? Are you always trying to hide them? Do you think they age your appearance? Well Ametrine Rose Health & Beauty have just the answer for you! Did you know that dark pigmentation is a result of extra melanin in the body? The pigmentation is caused by an excessive amount of melanin found in certain skin cells (responsible for determining skin and hair colour). These skin cells generally carry higher levels of melanocytes, which produce the melanin, causing the skin to appear more pigmented in certain areas. Pigmentation can occur for a number of reasons: exposure to the sun, a side effect from the contraceptive pill, hormone change, pregnancy, ageing or it can be a hereditary factor. Ametrine Rose Heath & Beauty now offer a new treatment to help eradicate visible signs of years of damage to your face and reduce pigmentation such as ‘sun spots’. The new E-LIGHT machine works to reduce superficial pigment, improving the skins texture, boosting collagen, and stimulating the skins immune system. E-Light is a technology that combines both IPL (Intense Pulse Light) & RF (radio frequency) Technologies and is the next generation in high-tech skin enhancement treatments. This straightforward, non-invasive procedure also helps with removal of unwanted hair and red veins. The immediate results are not dissimilar to other skin laser treatments, producing visible results within days of treatment. At first the E-LIGHT machine produces a red, sunburn-like reaction but rest assured this only lasts a few days. Better yet, the client can happily return to normal day-to-day activities immediately following the treatment. Run by internationally qualified therapist, Cindy, with over 20 years of experience along with her fully qualified beauty therapists and Chinese Medicine Physical therapists, Ametrine Rose Health & Beauty will successfully help you turn back the signs of skin damage with their new E LIGHT treatment.

The Dress

by PORTIA O’KANE

Photography by Nisha Ravji nisharavji.com

I

had a picture in my head of ‘The Dress’ I knew I wanted but I honestly thought that I would have to have it made from scratch. In my head I was calling it ‘The Dress’ because I knew if or when I found it, I would immediately say to myself and to anyone around: “That is ‘The Dress’.” I thought it was going to take months so I gave myself lots of time and decided to start at the place that has never failed me: Modes, because I knew they also had a separate Bridal store. For both my 6th form and 7th form Balls, Modes was my ‘go to’ place. For any weddings and birthday parties Modes have been there and I have always found a dress that ends up being a very memorable piece in my ever- growing wardrobe. So I booked my appointment at Modes and off I went. (Unbeknown to me ‘The Dress’ was only hours away from me finding her.) I was greeted at the front of the elegant shop by Dianne, who with her big smile and warm nature handed me several stunning wedding dress albums with every single style, shape and cut you could ever dream of. (Luckily for me I am a very decisive person and I knew exactly what I wanted!) My wedding was planned for July in New Zealand, therefore a winter wedding. This excited Di no end as it gave her a challenge and a point of reference to help me find a dress suitable for a cold New Zealand winter yet still elegant and one that would keep me warm. She directed me into the changing rooms with their 12-foot floor to ceiling drapes and brought three dresses for me to try on. I didn’t need all three though because there hung ‘The Dress’ in all its glory…I knew it was the one before I even tried it on. I couldn’t get into it fast enough, took a breath and walked out to show it off to my team. Warm and elegant with its long lace sleeves, it fitted me like a glove. I felt like a princess and when I saw the look on my Mum and Stepmum’s faces I knew we had found it. We had found ‘The Dress’. Di called me the new record holder and proceeded to tell me that from the time I arrived to the decision of finding ‘The Dress’ was 32 minutes exactly! I highly recommend Modes — so professional, stunning, elegant and first class… Thank you Modes for helping me find ‘The Dress’.

Rembrandt 70 YEARS OF TRIUMPH

I

t is not the suit that makes the man, but the man who makes the suit. For Rembrandt, this speaks nothing but truth. Most New Zealand owned companies believe 10 years of success is a milestone. Rembrandt however are celebrating 7 decades of success. What was once a small bespoke tailoring business in Wellington, is now Australasia’s leading specialist tailors, specialising in classic yet contemporary menswear and made to measure suits. Rembrandt’s extensive collection includes suits, jackets and trousers, shirts, ties, outerwear, accessories and casual wear. Garments are tailored in the Company’s own production facility, or made under contract by specialist overseas manufacturers who share the same passion in the production of high quality garments. With over 1.8 million suits made and a rich history of the finest tailoring skills, Rembrandt’s story of 70 years of sartorial excellence has just begun. The New Zealand owned business, Rembrandt, is a leader in the retailing, marketing and manufacturing of menswear - superior in design and quality. Additionally Rembrandt is the only New Zealand retailer with a tailoring factory based in our home country. Rembrandt’s brand is represented in highly prestigious and renowned retail stores throughout New Zealand and Australia. The business success is a result of their rich knowledge of tailoring history and deep understanding behind the principles of tailoring. Combine these with modern designs, technology and cloths from the world’s finest mills and you get the best of the best. It’s rightfully put when Rembrandt states “Bespoke is in our blood”. Since Rembrandt’s beginning in 1946, the company’s goal has been to create menswear that fits perfectly, looks great, is good value for money and is made from fabric from the world’s best fabric mills. In fact Rembrandt was started as “Bert Churchill Tailors”, before the company changed it’s name in the 1950’s to “Harrison and Van Werkhoven and Company Ltd” – when every garment the company made was bespoke. This all changed however in 1952 after the company got together for a brainstorming session to create a title for the company’s new line of ready to wear suits, and so Rembrandt was born. Now, with the fifteen Rembrandt retail stores, five department store concept shops and more than 100 independent retail stores carrying the brand across these two countries, Rembrandt has come a long way since the beginning.

Continuing to make suits in their New Zealand factory, while working alongside a few international suppliers who share Rembrandt’s commitment to quality, Rembrandt is making their mark across the world. Despite being Australasia’s largest specialist tailors, all Rembrandt custom suits are made to measure in-house by a small group of highly skilled individuals - ensuring quality over quantity. The company has built their international reputation and success on understanding the principles of the art of classic tailoring while also being attentive towards the quality of service their customers want, from the consultation to the arrival of their client’s suit, whether it’s hired, ready made or made to measure. Rembrandt retail staff are highly trained in men’s tailoring and not only offer their customers superb service but also the time to really listen to what customers are after. Customers are assured that Rembrandt’s staff are focused on finding what’s right for them, and if they can’t find it off the rack then Rembrandt re-assures clients by happily making it through their custom service. Whether it’s a suit or other men’s wear apparel, customer’s will walk out happy, knowing the history behind the company they’re buying their garment from, with the trust of the opinion of a team who want to see them at their best. The curation of Rembrandt’s extensive menswear designs are a result of what the company’s design team do to keep Rembrandt on trend. The design team frequently visit design capitals of the world and fabric exhibitions in Europe. From there they buy the designs that capture Rembrandt’s image, put their heads down, and ideas up until a whole new range of ready made suits are produced - which they know customers will love. The Production and Technical team also travel the world to ensure the latest technology and top international practices are implemented across the company, when and where appropriate. As a result Rembrandt cut and fit to flatter all body types and styles and therefore have a large range of suits available from their ready-to-wear range; including a wide selection of short and tall cuts. Additionally Rembrandt offer customers the ability to custom tailor suits from their ready-towear collection – altered in the NZ Rembrandt factory. And to cater to the wedding and events market, they also offer a suit hire service. So whatever route a customer chooses; custommade, ready to wear or suit hire, Rembrandt can provide a great fitting suit for their size, shape, occasion and budget. For that final touch of class, choose from Rembrandt’s selection of shirts, ties and accessories – now that’s a winning look! After 70 years of triumph, Rembrandt has come a long way. With Rembrandt stores in both New Zealand and Australia and their garments available in hundreds of the best menswear stores on both sides of the Tasman, Rembrandt is only just getting started. Customers know that when purchasing a garment from Rembrandt they are making a worthwhile investment in themselves and can feel confident knowing they are wearing a quality garment, rich in a history of quality and bespoke tailoring. Whether you have the body of a basketball player or sumo wrestler, Rembrandt has the suit for all body types and all occasions.

Local Brand Lets You Battle it All

INTRODUCING KAIWAKA CLOTHING CO

F

rom working on the farm to fishing in the deep blue, it’s all been done to test drive just what it takes to bring practical, quality gear to Kiwis. Starting out from humble beginnings rooted in beef and dairy farming, the Kaiwaka Clothing Company was inspired by the relentless rain that soaks you to your core. Six generations of farmers had to endure unforgiving weather out on the land to research first-hand a way to bring innovation to the industry. With the elements against them as they worked together, a system of trial and error was used to pinpoint how to make the perfect product. Years of experience now under their belt, they have developed a way to give both the usual workers and any average lad a completely different experience. The Stewart family is the brains behind the business; with origins stretching far across the world from Scotland to Nova Scotia, they have been brought up with the knowhow to tackle what farmers need. A hands-on, no-nonsense philosophy drives the business, focusing on research to consistently craft the finest goods. The attention to detail and workmanship behind the scenes has ensured everything is top notch, from the cut of the clothes to the materials used. This sturdy stuff is waterproof, windproof and can stand the test of time – with a no split seam lifetime guarantee to prove it. Their range of Stormforce fabrics walk a fine line between bringing you the resistance to both water and wind without skimping on the comfort. It’s been developed using microporous and hydrophilic technologies on the inside and out to keep the moisture at bay – for you and I that means double protection. They’ve used their insight into the realities farmers face to establish top of the line wear for anyone in any condition. The brains behind the brand cite consistent innovation as the key to stay ahead of the game, taking a fresh and effective approach to quality weatherproof wear. It’s no wonder they’re considered world leaders.

As the summer that never ends finally fades and winter bears down, reinforced, waterproof fabrics that are warm and comfy are exactly what you need in the great outdoors. With this in mind (and on your bodies), the weather can’t stop you from work or play. Their ranges are fit for agriculture, horticulture, contractors, construction, fishing, tramping, yachting,

boating and hunting. Outside of those at work, there are ranges to suit men, women and children alike. Kaiwaka’s core values are the heart of the company. Quality, reliability and practicality have won over the globe, all from rural New Zealand. As they expand, so do their offerings. Ladies and gents, boys and girls are all accounted for, with

the ranges carefully crafted to suit the wearer with ease. They’ve brought the world gear that is as tough as it is comfortable. As a constantly expanding global supplier, they’ve now widened the range of garments offered. New innovation means function meets aspiration. For instance, take a look at the new Stormforce Blue range with high collars, foldaway hoods and longer backs – ideal to keep you warm and dry no matter what you are doing. If you really want to see quality and innovation, check out the new design for Weathersheild Fleece. It is completely waterproof in a unique three-layer construction. The reason behind the name is a Dupont Hytrel membrane that has been bonded between two layers of anti-pill microfleece. This is what makes Weathersheild 100% waterproof while still being lightweight, windproof and breathable. This premium global brand stays true to its roots, helping the economy by keeping it local. Kaiwaka is based in its namesake, in the heart of Northland on the tip of New Zealand, where the company continues to focus on its commitments of manufacturing at-home to keep tabs on the quality. This ensures the materials have the brand’s devotion to integrity and honesty woven into the fibres. This company was founded over 40 years ago in 1975. Though their beginnings started in saddles, they swiftly brought their focus to highperformance wet weather products. The real life experiences and passion of this family is what has driven the innovation to make Kaiwaka known worldwide. All products have a no split seam lifetime guarantee. The garments have an unconditional warranty against faulty zips, rips and tears, to be repaired or replaced absolutely free. Kaiwaka Clothing is available online at kaiwakaclothing.co.nz and at all good rural, marine and workwear retailers. One hundred percent New Zealand made – it can’t get much better than this.

When greeting... When meeting for the first time, it is important to remember that typically Chinese bow rather than extending ones hand to shake. In general they dislike lots of personal contact. Nowadays shaking hands is becoming more suitable but it is important to remember that the likes of a hug usually only happens between good friends. Conversation… Personal titles are important, such as Mr, Mrs or Miss. In Chinese culture it is frowned upon to refer to elders or respected persons with only their Christian name. This is enforced from a young age. ‘Questioning’ makes for friendly conversation in China. Chinese feel the more they know about you, the stronger the relationship is between you both. They don’t feel this is an invasion of privacy. Remember to not make a meeting strictly about business, as casual conversation is respected as well. Chinese enjoy it when topics such as family, friends and hobbies (like sport) are also talked about, in order to better understand your character and therefore help them decide whether to do business with you.

Appropriate Business Etiquette

A

WHEN WORKING WITH CHINESE CLIENTS

s it has become apparent, nowadays Chinese businessman are looking further afield to do business and are choosing to leave their homeland to see the world and discover new cities and cultures. Many are coming to New Zealand and as a result we are rapidly entering more business opportunities with Chinese business owners. Having been brought up with different traditions it is important to be aware that other cultures often approach business differently and business etiquette can play a huge role in the success of your attempts to partner in work. So here we break it down for you and guide you to successfully do business with Chinese immigrants. Remember to not be shy; it’s all about bridging the gap.

Giving gifts When gifting a Chinese client or friend, you need to know the value of the gift as this resembles the importance of this person to you and according to Chinese etiquette, the recipient won’t open it in front of you unless you ask. The colour red in China symbolises happiness and jubilation. We suggest avoiding black or grey unless you’re attending a funeral or you know the recipient personally likes it. Business dinner… For a formal business dinner (or any meal), the seat for the eldest or the most important person of the group should be arranged to face the entrance. Similar to other cultures it is important to not touch your food until the senior patrons of the group start. When Chinese help you to dish your meal or pour you a drink it means you are welcomed.

IDEAS FOR HAVING A DOG GONE GOOD TIME THIS

Winter With Your Fur-babies by TANYA CRAMOY

B.S Animal Science, J.D. Owner of Ella Bella’s Pet Boutique

W

inter is finally upon us and unfortunately for many pets the next few months mean fewer, or less stimulating, outings and more time spent indoors. All is not lost—though you may want to put those gorgeous new-season boots up high just to be safe! Dogs have a very real need for mental stimulation with some breeds needing far more than we can provide with a daily routine of beach and bush walks, fetch, and tug-ofwar. Here are a few ideas to provide you and your pooch with some indoor mental and physical stimulation! Treasure Hunt. Getting your dog to use her nose to find something is a great way to kick her brain into gear. Start by putting your dog in a sit-stay position while you hide a favourite treat or toy somewhere fairly obvious. Then, give a release command and let her find the treasure—and make sure to give a big reward. Once she understands the game you can increase the difficulty and get creative—a bit of brain stimulation for the human, too! Hide-and-Go-Seek. This time, you are the treasure! You will need another human for this game—one of you can hide while the other keeps the dog in the sit-stay. Again, make it fairly easy at first, then, ramp up the difficulty. This is a great game to keep the kids busy on a rainy day, too! Clean-up Time. Teach you pup to put away his toys! This is a progressive game for you and your dog because you will first need to teach him what ‘put it away’ means. Clicker training is excellent for this and can provide hours of stimulation and bonding for you both. Work through baby steps to teach your dog to (1) find a toy, (2) pick it up, (3) carry it to a basket, and (4) drop it in—this alone will be great fun. Then, scatter the toys around the house and work with your dog to clean them up! From rainy, North Island mornings to freezing cold, South Island evenings, winter doesn’t have to mean boredom and destruction or unrest for our canine companions. With a little creativity, we can provide them with hours of mental and physical stimulation even when the weather is ugly!

HIGH FASHION HEADWEAR

S

usi Meares is the creative mind behind Seventh & Figg – one of New Zealand’s most sort-after headwear designers. Forever influenced by her surroundings and everyday objects, Susi creates bespoke high-fashion headwear, with many of her creations featuring an obvious nod to the past. Sourcing her materials from Australia, each piece is often completed with special treasures she finds along her day-to-day journeys (especially feathers). Having only been in business for two short years, the heads Susi Meares’ pieces have topped include the likes of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her sister Pippa Middleton…with whom Susi’s modern take on classic ‘retro aesthetics’ has proven popular and rings true to the talent and creativity she exudes; It is no wonder the label is in such high demand.

As Seventh & Figg is only stocked in Ballantynes Christchurch, you can also visit Susi’s home studio in St Albans (by appointment only) where she can create one-off custom made pieces to be perfectly coordinated to your special outfit. Whilst demand can be seasonal, Seventh & Figg’s calendar is quickly filling with orders as we see the “head-wear” trend rise again in popularity. The process - design stage to physical product, takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks and the end product always perfectly completes any ensemble. If you’re thinking about a custom made piece for spring racing, now is the time to get in contact. Otherwise for regular updates on new creations follow Seventh & Figg on Facebook to see what gorgeous pieces Susi Meares adds to the collection.

BARFOOT & THOMPSON FRANKLIN HOSPICE

Garden Ramble

U

nlike many other garden festivals – the Barfoot and Thompson Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble has the advantage of expansive country gardens and rural landscapes to view and this year’s event promises to be better than ever. This Garden Ramble will be focusing on gardens in the Ramarama, Ararimu, Paparimu and Bombay Hills area – and many of these gardens have never been open for public viewing. They include two gardens of historical coach houses in the district which provided the half way hitching posts for horse and coach en route to Auckland. In 2014 the Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble raised $45,000 which has been

80

used by Franklin Hospice to provide a very essential 24/7 phone line support service for carers of patients. Providing this link to expert care at all hours of the day and night has often meant peace of mind to those supporting patients in their own homes. Graeme Longdell, CEO of Franklin Hospice, would like to extend a big thank you to the supporters of the 2014 Garden Ramble. “The 24/7 phone has been a huge success and we are looking to extend our service to our patients with the proceeds of this year’s Barfoot and Thompson

Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble. Any donations from the 2016 Ramble will support fortnightly visits from a palliative specialist to undertake patient reviews along with nursing staff and to assist with the needs of the carer. This will ensure that our patients get the best possible care at all times”. Be sure to keep the weekend of 12 – 13 November free to view these exclusive country gardens.

The Boo Boo Dog

W

e’ve had Newfoundlands forever. Our first, Bella (Bella Boots), was a re-house for reasons I can’t remember. Our second, Lady Dog, was a re-house as well. She was a year or so old and things between her and her brother were a bit tense, so Lady had to go. She struck the jackpot, did the Lady Dog. We lived on a dozen or so acres on an estuary and, in those early days, there were not a lot of impediments to accessing the estuary and heading out to sea for a swim. I should note that we had some friends, Ursula and Jude, who lived in the BoP and who loved Bella Boots to distraction. It was too late for them to adopt a child; their hankering for Bella grew uncontrollable. As much as we loved Bella, she hadn’t been with us all that long and our friends’ needs were greater than ours; Bella moved to the warmer climes of Tauranga and was doted upon by her new mothers. … which was a bit fortunate, as things turned out. Early one morning (just as the sun was ri.i.sing), I awoke, I thought, to the sound of a rabbit in the clutches of one of our pussy cats. I traced the sound to Lady Dog’s residence and, completely unexpectedly, there found that Lady Dog was delivered of a black puppy and, clearly, was going to deliver of some more. No wonder Lady Dog hated her brother. I digress: this situation, an animal in need, is the very reason my bride is on this Earth. This fine and beautiful woman has come home, on wet cold spring days, with her fine pink dress (or similar) covered in mud or blood or both after having delivered lambs or calves, rescued cast sheep, re-organised horse covers and/or cut down fences to free horses. On a number of occasions, a lamb has been sighted on the front seat of her car, wrapped up in a car rug, because its mother had died. Ah ….. “Lambo” and “Vietlamb” (to name a couple), we salute you. The problem with these lambs, as I saw it, was that they did not take long to assume the mantle of cardcarrying members of the whanau. Wearing nappies, they quite enjoyed watching tv on the white leather couches. Sleeping outside, according to my bride, was verboten because the lambs weren’t used to it and they’d be lonely. I end this digression with a report that all of those card-carrying members of the whanau who had wool, ended up living long and contented lives and on first name terms with our vets. Sorry; another digression is critical. My bride was in South Auckland somewhere and, for reasons unknown, she was in a discussion with a butcher concerning the health and wellbeing of a Heinz mutt seen lurking around the butcher’s. This young chap (the dog) was in various parts: corgi, something, terrier, something and something. According to the report given by the Chief Executive, when I espied the arrival of “Basil” sitting in the front seat, he was days away from certain death from starvation (well, yes, the butcher did feed him but they were scraps).

84

Back to Lady Dog – so, we ended up with 2 blacks, a brown and a landseer (brown and white). Basil became a very protective Uncle Basil and remained so for the rest of his long life. The brown, Fleur, soon wormed her way into a position of absolute dominance; my bride was besotted with her. The prospects of all four puppies staying on at our place was quite high until, one day, the CE thought that Fleur might get jealous of the others, whereupon she embarked on an earnest search for “appropriate” servants for our puppies. The qualifications necessary to be considered able to serve our puppies were, by any measure, exacting. Bear in mind that this was in the late 1990’s, applicants had to have: 1. A disposable income of $200,000+; 2. A fair bit of land (bonus points for water access); 3. No other dogs. There was a fourth requirement, which was severely limiting of the numbers who could qualify: my beloved had to like the applicant(s). Chelsea, the landseer, went to a dentist and his family and dominated their lives. If I may be permitted another digression, Chelsea’s parents had a very nice 4WD (of course: “my puppies are not travelling in cars which might be unsafe”) and, in said 4WD, they took her for a trip to the garden centre out by Takanini. Newfies are renown for disrespect of rules; “Stay Chelsea” saw her heading off to a slime-filled pond at the centre where, I recall, water lilies and the like were displayed and where Chelsea decided to have a jolly good play and swim. “Chelsea, come here!” saw her run to a 4WD which was not dissimilar to her parents’ and, as was her absolute right, she launched herself into the back seat. Her parents found her in the stranger’s car on top of hundreds of dollars of plants and seedlings and in the course of shaking off the slime onto the upholstery. “Lucky”, a black and so-called because a cousin’s child tried to drown her, became “Ebony” and went to the wilds of upmarket Drury. The other black became Tish and went to near Muriwai on a solid 20 acres or so of horse property. I return to Fleur. Her litter had been dispersed; her dominance was supreme. If Fleur had ever needed an organ transplant, there would have been severe looks in my direction. Fleur’s demise is amongst the saddest events in our whanau. She and Lady Dog and Uncle Basil used to go for long swims down the estuary and come back, hours later, totally knackered. One day, Uncle Baz returned at usual time; there was no sign of Lady Dog and Fleur. Later that night, Lady came home with 6 or 7 bullets in her and we never saw Fleur again. My bride’s grief was profound. Even now, years later, cold and rainy afternoons, like the day Fleur went missing, make her upset.

Lady Dog and Uncle Baz made their way into the large urn containing our dogs’ ashes. We then had a brown male called Yogi [Dog], who was with us the standard sort of time for a Newfie of about 8 or 9 years. The night of his death was harrowing as well. Our daughter had brought her boyfriend out for a Sunday roast dinner to meet the whanau. Before their arrival, Yogi lost the use of his rear end and the vet was called. Nice roast, I expect, but no-one ate it. I’m running out of space and I still have to mention the actual subject of this story: the Boo Boo Dog. While waiting for a brown male Newfie, we were missing having a dog in the family, so a Leonburger called “Baldric” (“Baldy Dog”) came along. A few months later came the “Dog who would be King”. From arrival, Boo Boo was determined to rule. Attempts at training him were a waste of time. In no particular order, Boo Boo’s exploits included: 1. A fascination with hedgehogs. Sometimes, we would be woken with a series of hedgehog woofs. Generally, this involved his carrying a hedgehog to the top of the small hill at the back of the house and rolling it down the hill. If the hedgehog stopped rolling, woofs ensued. The woofs, of course, were wasted effort so he’d nose the hedgehog down to the bottom. Then, there’d be more woofs calling for the hedgehog to walk back up the hill. The process was repeated until I went out and rolled the hedgehog under a fence. Every now and again, the woman of my dreams would have to operate on Boo Boo’s nose and face to remove hedgehog spikes. 2. A love of hunting. If he heard me check the state of my rifle’s breach (as I took it out of the safe, Your Honour), both he and Baldy would run to the foot of the stairs, “wagging tail dogs”, ready to go out for rabbits and possums. They’d eat rabbits but they’d only carry possums until they had a rabbit or got home. 3. A love of high diving. We had a house, for a while, with a weir which was about 1.5m high. He’d stand at the top of the weir, woofing for the throwing of a ball or stick into the pool, whereupon he would launch himself up and out. He loved that so much but his principles were such that he never did it unless we threw something in. 4. A love of the water. Standing in the horse troughs was an attraction to him. The sea. Ponds. Puddles. He avoided the horses’ wash down bay because getting a wash was not something he’d thought of first. 5. Going in the car. That was soooooo sweeeet. He had a safety belt. Head out the window – slobbering. Woofing (not growling) at dogs, at cars, at people. He and Baldy would spend hours in the back of our old Rangie while we harrowed paddocks or towed the poo picker.

6.

7.

A love of his whanau. Mokopuna would lie all over him; he was imperturbable. Family members were met with a snout in the crotch and a wagging rear end. He stood between his family and any baddies. He preferred to sleep outside, so he could guard us. There was his “guard dog woof”, which meant that there could be a security issue and there was his “middle of the night woof”, which meant that he was bored and wanted to annoy us. A dedication to slobbering. If he drank from his bowl, the water trail from the bowl could go for miles. That snout in the crotch? Mostly accompanied by a large degree of slobber on your clothes.

He died recently. What a hole in the family fabric.

The Sleep Revolution The Snow Farmer by Arianna Huffington by Sally Rae Arianna reveals all the ways that our inability to get enough sleep impacts our lives, undermines our decision making, compromises our health, our athletic performance, our work lives, our relationships and even our sex lives, and causes us to lose control over of how we interact with others and engage with the world. $38.00

Bravo Tv EYE’S WINTER PICKS

N

Z free to air TV gets a Hollywood makeover this July with the launch of Bravo – New Zealand’s home of premium unscripted content. The programming line-up includes ‘first time in New Zealand’, as well as ‘express from the U.S’ shows, making sure you’re up to date as the drama unfolds. Bravo is a joint venture between NBCUniversal and MediaWorks, bringing the best in unscripted programming to New Zealand – free-to-air. Bravo’s programming focuses on the brand’s unique passion points - glam, design, food and pop culture. Eye breaks down the top shows to watch on Bravo this season...

POP CULTURE Real Housewives We’re holding out for our very own local version of this popular international franchise, but until that airs, we’ll be getting our fix with the U.S series’ running on Bravo. The series has been running since 2009 and Vicki Gunvalson – one of the longest standing cast members still remains as a core cast members. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and New Jersey will all be hitting our screens giving us a dose of housewife drama to whet our appetite before our own local version hits in August. With Vicki on the out from the rest of the women and Teresa (Real Housewives of New Jersey) fresh out of jail, the drama will be at an all-time high. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills comprises a host of recognisable faces – including Lisa Rinna, Yolanda Foster and Lisa Vanderpump - who also features in a spin-off series Vanderpump Rules, which will be premiering on Bravo in July.

Dance Moms This popular show has been running since 2011 and will air for the first time in New Zealand on July 3. The show follows the renowned Abby Lee Dance Company and the careers of the children on the road to dance stardom.

DESIGN FOOD Flipping Out and Million Dollar Listing are two shows we’ll be coveting this season. Here at Eye we love a glimpse into how the other half live and these shows are sure to give us a few home styling ideas along the way.

12

With the rise of food programming we’ve unleashed a passion for all things food – whether its cooking, eating or watching, we’re in! Top Chef will no doubt be rating high on our agenda this winter as the latest contestants battle it out for the title of Top Chef.

W

ell-known and loved from Christchurch up to Auckland, Angela Stone is a common name in the world of fashion, style and racing. The entrepreneur and mother is also starring in the highly-anticipated new series, The Real Housewives of Auckland, from the newly launched Bravo New Zealand. We sat down with Angela to discuss beauty, housewives and life-tips...

What three items, that people would not expect you to have, are always in your handbag? I carry a USB drive with me at all times - so I can save files wherever I am and at whatever time. I couldn’t go without this one! It’s essential to running the business. A mini torch. While I usually keep this on-hand to help me see in the dark, I sometimes use it just to find things in my actual handbag - I swear I’ve got everything but the kitchen sink in there! Finally, I always, always have a little bottle of non-greasy sunscreen in my handbag - even in winter. Probably the most important factor in keeping your skin healthy is making sure it is hydrated. Nothing dries skin out more than sunburn! What’s your typical morning routine? I usually rise around 6.30am and meditate for at least 20 minutes. I then drink two bottles of Herbalife green tea one in the shower, and one as I make the bed and get the house organised. Next, I put on my makeup and take my Xtendlife supplements. I then have a Herbalife shake. After this, I do my hair, get dressed and am ready to start my day by 8am!

What’s your top housewife life-hack? I think the key thing is to always remember to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not embrace who you are. This is a big life and it’s about having fun on this incredible journey of self-discovery. For me that is mainly what the show is about - having fun. And real friendships have been made. What defines a ‘real housewife’? I think in 2016 we have stepped away from the conventional housewife model to accommodate the huge changes that have taken place in society, in terms of gender roles, the family unit and the home itself. A housewife isn’t just a stay-at-home mother who spends her day cleaning, cooking and tidying while the bread-winning father is at work and the two children are at school. I think a real housewife is the person who puts their heart into their home. They could be a man or a woman, and could be employed or unemployed - it doesn’t matter. They are committed to running the house and instrumental in this. Your home is the place where everybody comes together, where you have celebrations, share family time and feel most comfortable. The housewife aids the function of the home and provides a roof for the family. What makes New Zealand Real Housewives different from the ones from overseas? I think as New Zealanders we are very homegrown, very genuine, very down to earth. I think there’s a naturalness about us that really comes through. Unlike some places, we have grown up in a country where we have everything at our doorstep beaches, mountains, cities, bush - and so we have been raised with access to this, and exposed to many different ways of life. This is very grounding.

What is the one thing that a Real Housewife must be? When it comes to juggling life, work and everything else, I think organization is the key to keep everything in check whether it be what’s happening at home, with friends and family or work. Who would you consider to be Real Housewife perfection from your point of view? It would have to be Blake Lively. She’s beautiful and talented but still seems down to earth considering her surroundings. She also seems to have a real, genuine relationship with her partner which seems to be rare in Hollywood these days.

Jennifer Duke

Koh Koga

Have you watched the show? I haven’t watched the series before but I’m sure I will catch a glimpse of the Auckland series when it comes out. Which Auckland Real Housewife do you like best and why? I like the look of Michelle.

What is the one thing that a Real Housewife must be? Being a housewife involves listening to so many different viewpoints. That’s why it’s so important to be able to compromise and reflect balance and a voice of reason amongst the chaos. Who would you consider to be Real Housewife perfection from a male’s point of view? Jessica Alba, not only for the obvious reasons but I like her ethical approach to business. It’s refreshing to see a celebrity endorse ethical consumerism, especially when it comes to baby products. Have you watched the show? I haven’t watched it before but because it’s about New Zealanders, I may watch it here and there. I know I will definitely hear about it - everyone seems to be talking about it already! Which Auckland Real Housewife do you like best and why? I don’t know any but quite like Michelle Blanchard so far.

What is the one thing that a Real Housewife must be? In my opinion…. A multi-tasker extraordinaire! As a mum, especially a working mum, there is a lot to juggle and I find the better I keep tabs on everything, the happier my family seems to be and makes life a little less stressful. Who would you consider to be Real Housewife perfection? Judy Bailey? She represents New Zealanders in so many ways with her likable personality and down-toearth disposition. She certainly seems “real”, rather than how “real” is associated with the Housewives show.

Dianne Allan

Have you watched the show? I haven’t watched the show, no. However, it will be interesting to see the New Zealand take on it and how it differs to the international series. I will tune in to see what it is about. Which Auckland Real Housewife do you like best and why? I’m not familiar with any of the ladies on the show, I will have to wait and see the show to decide.

Michael Shah What is the one thing that a Real Housewife must be? Forgiving. For us (men) not putting the toilet seat down, doing the wrong thing when we think it is the right thing and not noticing you’ve bought a new apron/had your hair done, whichever comes first. Who would you consider to be Real Housewife perfection from a male’s point of view? I had the pleasure to meet Nigella Lawson a few months ago. You don’t get more ‘Real Housewife’ than Nigella…sultry, sexy, full-bodied like a great red wine and covered in chocolate. She was much more genuine in person, more humble, less made up than on her shows (literally and figuratively) and a little overwhelmed by all the love she was getting. Have you watched the show? No. I don’t need to. I’ve been married twice, this time for 17 years. I’m in love with a real housewife. The highlight of my day is getting into bed with her (apron on or off, I don’t care). Which Auckland Real Housewife do you like best and why? My fav is Julia Sloane as she’s got the most credibility... author, athlete, former model, she’s an action woman.

Shooting for Gold NATALIE ROONEY’S ROAD TO RIO

R

io 2016 will be Natalie Ronney’s first Olympic games having narrowly missed out on a place in the London 2012 Team after being selected then disappointingly omitted from the team. This issue we took five minutes with Natalie to find out a little more about her journey to Rio. Guns are not a common interest for young girls. What drew you to competitive shooting? Two of my brothers started shooting at Waimate High School in the ‘Down the Line’ Secondary Schools competition. The nationals that year was in Christchurch and I was there watching so my Dad took me to the practice trap to have a go and I fell in love with it. London must have been an upset for you? How did you bounce back from it? London was very upsetting but it made we want to go to the Olympics even more. After London I was extremely lucky to get sponsored by Beretta New Zealand who have helped me progress my shooting with my gun that I am using (Beretta DT11) and the coaching that I receive from overseas. I have become a much better and consistent shooter in the last 3 years because of this support and these opportunities.

24

Congratulations you are going to Rio, so what are you most excited about? Have you travelled there before? I travelled to Rio earlier this year for a World Cup and test event for the Olympics. Rio is a beautiful city and I got to have a good look around. I am most excited about representing New Zealand at the Olympics. It has been a dream for a very long time. I think competing in that type of atmosphere is going to be amazing and an experience that I won’t be able to compare to anything. Any tips for those who might be interested in getting into the sport? There are a lot of Trap Shooting clubs within New Zealand. In my experience they are all very welcoming and love helping out new comers. I would suggest finding out what day they have a club day and going along to try it out — you definitely won’t regret it.

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME IN WINTER…

I

t sure is cold outside! Not to mention, how much rain we’ve had lately! We are definitely in the midst of winter and on the darker, chilly days, the idea of being rugged up at home, in front of a fire, with a movie on the screen, all whilst that delicious homemade dinner is cooking away, sounds pretty much like a dream scenario. Unfortunately for most of us, we have that thing called work to attend to most days but when we do get the time to snuggle up in the comfort of home, it can be made all that much sweeter when your home is shaped into a haven, for rest, relaxation and comfort. The pinnacle of winter warmth is a dreamy fire place and our friends at Real Fires have the perfect solution for every

26

room, whether it is indoors or out. Their passion for innovation will help you warm up a space with the touch of a button and add ambience to any room. An outdoor gas fireplace will help keep your external areas user friendly, or we should we say entertainer friendly, no matter the temperature, optimising the use of different areas in and around your home all year round. Forever stylish and durable against harsh winter conditions, is Devon furniture. Their use of raw materials, sourced from around the world and their leading edge construction techniques means you can rest easy when it’s tumbling down with rain outside. Devon pieces will stand the test of time. Our other solution for staying warm whilst it’s

cold out… jumping into a heavenly Hot Spring Spa! Slide into the warmth, blast up the jets and treat your muscles and mind to an hour or so of pure heaven. On the other hand, if sticking to the indoors is more your idea of bliss in winter, bring the outdoors in with indoor plants. As seen in our regular Palmers feature, this issue they give us their tops tips on how to maintain healthy plants inside and the wonderful health benefits indoor plants can also bring. This issue Bosch also give us the low down on their latest and greatest products and we jump into bed with Bedpost in their new Tempur adjustable bed base…dreamy? We know! And last but not least we talk to the Vecroe family of Nelson’s GJ Gardner and get their expert take on making a house a home.

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT

Graham, Shirley & Stephen Vercoe

Making a House, a Home

S

hirley Vercoe, from GJ Gardner’s Nelson franchise, has been in the GJ team since late 2000, running the business with her husband Graham. In recent years their son Stephen has also been involved in the business in a construction role. This issue we spoke with Shirley to find out more about their take on being a part of GJ Gardner Homes. Why did you decide to become a franchisee for GJ Gardner Homes? The uncompromising commitment to providing top quality, competitively priced homes whatever the size, cost and client requirements. What was the attraction? In the beginning, as to this day, there was a respected support network throughout the country. The same support network and relationships developed from the beginning are still with us 16 years later – from suppliers, staff and subcontractors, to other franchisees – which Graham and I value immensely. We continue to see some of our first clients that we’ve developed great friendships with. Some of your team members are your family members. Would you say this adds to the cohesiveness of the building process? Yes, because we’re all highly invested and hold each other accountable to ensuring the building process is as cohesive and professional as possible for our clients.

32

What’s the most common mistake you see first home builders making? Often people can look to price alone and won’t realise they aren’t comparing similar propositions and will end up with an inferior product or finish. What would you say is the biggest trend this year that customers are implementing into their houses? One of the biggest trends we are seeing is the attention and detail people are putting into their kitchens. This room has become the heart of the home. With a focus on open plan living, sculleries are a big trend that allows our customers to separate the work area of the kitchen from the social area. What would be your number 1 tip to those looking at building rather then buying? Do your research. Research the land, talk to the builders and understand the look and feel you’re trying to achieve. Being able to customise the ideal home for you and your family, and the satisfaction in seeing the finished product exactly to your taste, is what our customers get the most fulfilment from. Prevalent on this season’s TV3 Block NZ series, indoor plants are so versatile, and there’s one to fit any theme and in that case, any room. Whether it’s a private study nook, large lounge or hanging from your bathroom ceiling, you can inject life into any space with the use of interior flora and fauna. Need another reason to follow the trend? Well indoor plants not only look good but boast health benefits too. They can be used to filter light, purify the air and simply make us feel good. Choosing a plant is half the fun but then there’s the pot too. The huge range from Palmers will give you plenty of choice and will ignite your inner interior decorator to fill any given space. So this winter issue we chatted with Palmers and found out what plants are ideal for indoors and got their top tips for adding house plants to your indoor spaces.

Palmers Top Tips •

Firstly, plant it in the right pot. Choose one that’s slightly bigger than the plastic pot it was sold in. A glazed or decorative plastic pot will retain moisture better than a terracotta pot. Also use a good quality potting mix from Palmers.

An easy way to tell if your plant needs water is to poke your finger into the soil to the first knuckle. If the soil feels damp, don’t water. If it’s dry, water. Overwatering is a common cause of bad plant health as excess water sits in the soil and replaces the plant’s much-needed oxygen, and the roots will rot. Leafier plants will need more water than smaller-leafed plants or succulents.

Find out how much light your plant likes. Is it happy in direct sun, indirect sun or in low light? A plant that isn’t getting enough light will be spindly and the lower leaves will turn yellow and drop off. An over-lit plant will have dry and/or scorched leaves and will wilt easily.

Most house plants need an occasional feed of slow-release fertiliser. Check the options available at Palmers.

And lastly, give them an occasional dusting by wiping with a damp cloth to maintain the shiny look of the leaves.

DISCERNING APARTMENT BUYERS LOOK TO

World-Class Grace Victoria Quarter LIFESTYLE DEVELOPMENT

D

esign loving homebuyers with an eye for detail have flocked to new lifestyle community Grace Victoria Quarter, with more than $70 million in sales achieved at the high profile project. Bringing together the market leading expertise and local knowledge of internationally renowned Cox Architecture, New Zealand-based Opus Architecture and award-winning developers Little Projects and Location Group, Grace Victoria Quarter has struck a chord with savvy buyers who understand the value of design and amenity. Location Group Managing Director Mark Weipers says Grace Victoria Quarter has redefined expectations of inner city apartment living setting a new benchmark for design excellence in Auckland.

42

“We’re redeveloping these apartments in association with the best in the industry and the market has shown an appreciation for the effort and detail that has gone into creating a project of such high quality,” Mr Weipers says. Owner-occupiers transitioning from large family homes in nearby blue ribbon suburbs such as Herne Bay, Parnell and Ponsonby have been particularly taken by the spaciousness of the apartments and the sophisticated amenities, some combining two apartments to make even larger homes. “Auckland residents live in a world class city and Grace Victoria Quarter reflects that growing maturity, demonstrating the beauty and convenience of apartment living that hasn’t previously been offered in the city,” Mr Weipers says.

Located at 70 Sale Street, the project is 800m from the waterfront, providing immediate access to key Auckland amenities including Victoria Park, the Wynyard Quarter and Auckland Harbour to the north. The CBD retail precinct is only 750m to the east with major corporate headquarters including Fonterra, Spark, Air New Zealand and the New Zealand International Convention Centre, all within walking distance. Award-winning Cox Architecture’s contemporary design maximises the Auckland city, Ponsonby Ridge and harbour views with a sinuously curved facade tracing the line of the corner site. An elegant residential entrance lobby will feature a double-height sculptural

staircase, flanked on either side by retail tenancies, which will activate the streetscape and provide access to a unique courtyard garden sheltered between the arms of the building. Amenities include a Residents’ Rooftop Retreat with Sky Terrace and separate lounge, which will provide 360-degree views, shared dining spaces and individual private spaces for relaxation. A secret garden forms a central oasis with lush tropical landscaping, a tranquil water feature and elevated dining zone. From smartly designed one-bedroom apartments to premium double-storey ‘sky’ homes, Grace Victoria Quarter’s diverse product offering makes the lifestyle community ideal for first-home buyers, owner-occupiers and investors alike.

According to Little Projects General Manager of Sales and Marketing Fergus Humphries, the $100 million project is on track for completion in late 2018, with demolition of the existing buildings to commence in the coming months, and more than 70 of the 100 luxury one- two- and three-bedroom apartments already sold. “The market is discerning,” Mr Humphries says. “What we’ve seen at Grace Victoria Quarter is an overwhelming demand from owner-occupiers and local investors, which confirms this city’s appetite for projects that are driven by design and amenity,” Mr Humphries says. “This is a thoughtfully designed lifestyle development that brings together a decade of experience delivering high

quality projects in Melbourne’s most popular urban areas with world class architecture on an enviable gateway site.” Priced from $540,000 to $3.3m, a great selection of apartments are still available for sale at Grace Victoria Quarter. Those interested in purchasing at the world-class lifestyle community should act immediately. For more information, call Bayleys Ponsonby agents Karen Spires on 027 273 8220 or Brad Roebuck on 027 472 2387, or visit the display suite at 115 Cook St, Victoria Quarter. The display is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am – 3pm.

Sharing your Living Space

T

hink back to when you moved out of home for the first time; that adjustment when you had to come to terms with needing to do your own washing and cooking (we’ve all been there, and it’s scary enough). Fast forward and now you’ve moved in with a partner. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an incredibly exciting time for any couple, but like all things, the change comes with a lot of nerves, and unlike friends and family who know all of your little quirks – your significant other is getting to meet a whole other you.

• You may well now be sharing a space with your partner, but it doesn’t mean you need to be around each other all the time. Enjoy having your own hobbies, whether its playing golf on the weekends or Pilates after work, it’s important to still maintain who you are as an individual. • Make decisions together. We all have different tastes when it comes to decorating and where we think the furniture should go, so listening to each other’s opinions works a treat in keeping conflict to a minimum. Remember, it is a fun thing to create a living space together, so enjoy it and share the process.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR LIVING WITH A PARTNER

• Chores are not a one-person job. No one wants to spend their weekends indoors cleaning the house. Make a habit of doing all the cleaning during the week, but split the work load. Have a mutual understanding of who takes out the rubbish and who cleans the bathroom so that you can leave your weekends free to relax at home or go out and have an adventure.

• Always be you. Although you can’t bear to think of someone knowing that you examine your pores at night or that you enjoy walking around the house ‘al fresco’, more times than not, the things we consider to be ‘weird’ about ourselves will most likely end up being their favourite thing about you.

• Share your feelings. Communication is key to any relationship, but if you’re living with each other it’s an absolute must. Ultimately, you’re going to spend the vast majority of your time together, so it’s important that time is spent open and free. Get those niggly thoughts out - you’ll both be better for it!

Thinking of buying a bach? ...THINK AGAIN

A

s the cold starts to bite, that lazy summer holiday may feel far away – and when it comes to property investment, that’s probably a good thing. It’s easy to get romantic when you’re relaxed. Who hasn’t sat on a sunny deck with an ice-cold beverage thinking, “Maybe we should buy a bach?” Let’s get real. For the majority of holiday home-owners, a bach is an emotional purchase rather than a sound investment. Sure, you can rent it out some of the time, but that fluctuating income brings increased costs. There’s plenty of competition in the holiday market and Kiwis’ expectations are rising – along with nice views and a prime location, we want wifi, Sky TV, quality furnishings or paddle boards. Instead of paying out each month for a bach you’re barely using, why not purchase a residential investment property? Capital gain on residential property consistently outperforms that of seasonal coastal getaways. Choose wisely and your investment property may generate sufficient income to let you holiday wherever you like. Townhouses and apartments outside of Auckland’s CBD currently offer excellent value for money, as well as an appealing lifestyle for tenants. Newer developments are typically warm and well-insulated, with little or no garden to maintain. Look for a convenient location, close to transport links. As Auckland’s population and traffic congestion continues to rise, commuting times to the central city are becoming a critical factor in property values. Check out properties close to current and planned rail links, and consider both walking times to the station and nearby parking facilities. Rental properties in suburbs that are well serviced with schools, parks and recreation facilities continue to be in hot demand, especially in suburbs such as West Harbour, Mt Albert, Takapuna, Milford, Parnell, Remuera, Newmarket to name a few An investment property is one of the biggest purchases you’ll ever make, so it pays to talk to the experts. With nine offices across Auckland, our specialist property managers can help with rental returns and connect you with trusted advisors. Once the keys are in your hands, we’ll take expert care of your investment, handling everything from rent collection to inspection and day-to-day hassles.

The Lodge is also an unequalled new choice for weddings, conferences, private golf tournaments and very much more.

YOU MAY ONLY BE FIVE MINUTES FROM ROTORUA CITY, YET YOU’LL FEEL WORLDS AWAY AT

Peppers on the Point

O

n the shores of Lake Rotorua, nestled amongst five acres of private land and beautiful gardens, sits Peppers on the Point. Since the 1930’s, this luxury lodge has warmly welcomed guests inside its elegant doors. And while it charms with all the classic elegance of the time, it also features every comfort and convenience of today. Accommodation here includes seven beautifully appointed suites within the stately lodge itself and two charming cottages, all with separate lounge rooms and large ensuite bathrooms with spa bath. The cottages, especially, make for an unforgettable winter escape – enjoy a warming Red in front of your open fire or soak in the views as you soak in the hot tub on your private lakefront balcony. In fact, virtually every corner of this 5 Star property offers views across the lake to the enigmatic Mokoia Island beyond. And with its privileged north-facing position, those views include glorious sunrises and sunsets. In such a setting, it can be easy to forget you are just 7 minutes from all the entertainment of Rotorua. After an exceptional breakfast (included with your stay), head out for a day of adventure, shopping or spa treatments. Or spend

56

time just relaxing at Peppers; stroll on the private beach, hang toes off the jetty or sit fireside in the antiques-filled drawing room with a good book. The cuisine at Peppers is a jewel in this grand dame’s crown. Dinner is a fourcourse affair: fine dining but with no hint of pretentiousness. Each afternoon, the chefs set about crafting the following day’s menu, basing dishes around the very freshest and finest produce they can source – local and organic meats, seafood and vegetables. Winter brings hearty, indulgent flavours to the fore, all complemented by premiere New Zealand wines. To whet the palette, join your fellow guests in the main lodge for pre-dinner drinks and canapés; a complementary part of the Peppers experience. As if Peppers weren’t romantic enough, an enchanting stone chapel sits on the lakefront, basking in panoramic views. It’s the most perfect setting in which to say those first vows – or to renew them. This is a very special place in any season. But with its roaring open fires, heartwarming hospitality and belly-warming gourmet fare, a winter retreat like no other awaits you at Peppers on the Point.

B

esides the stunning setting and 180-degree views over the Abel Tasman National Park, architectural award-winning construction, museum-quality Asian art collection, and World-Class International wine cellar, the major point of difference at Split Apple Retreat is the food. Chef Pen is a true culinary artist, and has created a unique cuisine based on Asian- Mediterranean fusion, but with the added twist that every ingredient is selected for making a positive contribution to health and wellness. Lee Nelson is a retired US-trained medical doctor whose area of interest for the past 28 years has been nutritional medicine and nutraceuticals. Together, he and Chef Pen design and create the mouthwatering dishes that vary each evening in the minimum 5-course tasting menu dinners (along with a complimentary bottle of selected premium New Zealand wines) and superb gourmet breakfasts. Many of these recipes are available in ‘The Split Apple Thoughtful Food Cookbook’, a complimentary copy of which is given to each couple. Spa activities include Deep Tissue Massage, Thai Massage, Thai Oil Massage, Reiki therapy, yoga instruction, personal trainer, acupuncture, and more. Or just relax using the “Detox Box”, wet steam room, outdoor shower, and the salt water, heated, infinity swimming pool that overlooks the Tasman Bay. GOLD COAST’S CROWN JEWEL

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

62

Joyce Mroz in 1950, three years after the Sanctuary was first opened.

A

lex Griffiths, the founder of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary was persuaded by his parents to join them at their small property at Currumbin Beach to take up flower growing and bee keeping in 1947. It was not long before Griffiths had masses of flowers in bloom and the bee hives not only bought local residents to purchase flowers and honey but they attracted native birds particularly rainbow lorikeets. Alex decided to give the birds the nectar they craved, in turn protecting his precious flowers. Thus began, with no grand plan, the now famous twice daily feeding of the wild lorikeets at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is now spread across 28 hectares and is home to one of the largest collections of native Australian Wildlife found anywhere in the world with over 1000 species in their collection. Cuddling a koala (only in Queensland), handfeeding emus and kangaroos or having a photo with a wedge tailed eagle or snake are just some of the close encounters that you can have at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. They have recently introduced a Koala Experience where an expert koala handler will guide a limited number of guests each day through the off limit koala enclosures to get up close and personal with their famous residents. This was recently voted the number 1 animal encounter on the Gold Coast and not to feel left out; their echidna encounter took out 3rd position. The Behind the Scenes Tour is another new option available for those wanting to see the back of house operations in the presentation area, food preparation and wildlife hospital. With the latest addition of ‘The Big Fang Theory Snake & Reptile Show’, it brings their tally up to 14 daily shows including Free Flight Bird Shows, Aboriginal Dance performances, Crocodile Behaviours, Pelican and Eel feeding and a number of children shows featuring Blinky Bill and Friends. A visit to the onsite Wildlife Hospital - the busiest wildlife hospital in the southern hemisphere, will give a bird’s eye view of the tireless work that their vets provide to over 8500 animals

annually. It does not currently receive any ongoing State or Federal Government funding for the treatment of wildlife – a service that is provided free of charge to the community. The Hospital survives only on the generosity of individual donors and corporate partners to fund the crucial work of the veterinary team. Many of their conservation initiatives go unnoticed; however Currumbin facilitates and promotes conservation and research programs through universities, the Zoo Aquarium Association, government agencies and other projects developed internally. It is one of the few places in the world to successfully breed echidnas and their keepers continue to save critically endangered Tinker Frogs from extinction in the wild. Need more adventure? The Treetop Challenge, a high ropes course featuring 80 different challenges including ropes courses through the treetops, suspended bridges, flying foxes, monkey bridges, net challenges, suspended logs and flying foxes across the crocodile enclosure are certainly not for the faint hearted. Alternatively, guests can glide gently through the lush surroundings of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on an eco-friendly Segway Safari tour. They start with a 10-minute instruction class teaching the intuitive steering system, then onto a 40-minute fully guided tour of the Sanctuary’s vast bush land and rainforest habitats with one of their specialised guides. Over the past few months a number of new attractions have been unveiled including the Discovery Den with a range of new education programs, the Land of Parrots – a walk through aviary, wombat dens, bilby caves and a specialised nocturnal corridor. If you happen to visit on a Friday between 4-9pm, they hold the Sanctuary Markets on the Village Green next to the main entrance with arts and craft stalls, international food markets, live bands and farmers markets. It’s popular with locals and visitors alike, entry is free and it’s certainly a great way to finish your day.

The Perfect Blend of Luxury & Serenity MANAVA BEACH RESORT, MOOREA

Moorea has an international reputation for its impressive shark-watching sessions. It is also a special place for humpback whales from July to October.

B

uilt on the grounds of the first hotel ever established on the island, where three young Californians, inspired by Polynesia, created a mythical hotel. A remnant of that today, the Manava Beach Resort Moorea, may be boutique in size, but it is positively large in character. Formerly Moorea Pearl Resort & Spa, The Manava Beach Resort Moorea, features three stone tiki sculptures (mythical figures of Polynesia) that honor the rich Polynesian culture and traditions of times gone by. Moorea, the sister island to Tahiti is celebrated for its many white sand beaches, the wide variety of its coral seabed and the richness of its underwater life, making it a very special destination. Ideally located close to key arrival points, the Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course and walking distance to the village of Maharepa, guests of the resort will find a perfect balance between its accessibility to local surroundings but isolation from the usual hustle and bustle of everyday life. Accommodation ranges from garden hotel rooms to dreamy bungalows perfectly floating over the water. In the garden, traditional Polynesian bungalows feature their own private courtyard and plunge pool epitomizing the luxury of space and privacy. A waterlovers heaven, all bungalows offer direct access to the seductive sparkling waters of the lagoon and the resort’s infinity pool perfectly meets the edge of the white sandy beach. We must make mention of the fact that it is also the largest infinity pool on the island. Manava Beach’s A-la-carte dining features local delicacies – seafood, vanilla, tropical fruits and welcoming to us, it is often matched with a fine New Zealand wine. A signature dish of the resort is the chocolate fondant dessert or moelleux au chocolat. Heaven on a plate! For an injection of culture and a night of entertainment, there are two theme buffet dinners twice a week – Seafood Buffet & Polynesian Buffet & Floor Show. Dining at local restaurants is also encouraged with some providing a complimentary pickup and drop off service. With the warm climate, Tahitian hospitality and as much to see and do as you wish both on the land or water, we agree that typical New Zealander’s would feel most at home on Moorea (with the added promise of warmth obviously). The perfect blend of luxury and serenity makes Manava Beach Resort, Moorea an ideal destination for couples, honeymooners, divers, and families.

Manava Suite Resort

FREEDOM & PRIVACY OF AN APARTMENT PAIRED WITH SPECTACULAR VIEWS

T

he island of Tahiti is just 5 hours flying time from Auckland, your gateway to Tahiti and her dramatically picturesque islands. Ideally positioned on the western coast of Tahiti Island, in the charming city of Punaauia, Manava Suite Resort is the ultimate setting for soaking up some Vitamin D and catching up on R&R (rest and relaxation). This stunning resort is within minutes of the popular diving and snorkeling site known as the Lagoonarium and is approximately ten minutes from the wonderfully historic Papeete - the administrative capital of Tahiti. Unique among hotels in Tahiti in that the majority of the accommodation options are suites and apartments (which include a kitchenette), Manava Suite is ideal for those who prefer to self-cater, or at least like to have the option to. Better yet, a grocery store is just 5mins from the hotel and the hotel operates a twice daily shuttle service to the supermarket and downtown Papeete for a nominal charge. However if you’re like us and not having to worry about feeding the family whilst away makes a holiday, a holiday, then the hotel restaurant and bar have a great reputation with guests and locals alike and within walking distance of the hotel gates are some ‘must experience’ “roulottes” – open air food trucks serving steak, kebabs and crepes both savory and sweet. Onsite facilities of the resort are second to none. A state-of-the-art fitness centre, as well as a revitalizing spa, are perfect for those wishing to get in a good workout before being pampered in a luxurious setting, and will easily help you fill your days along with the spacious infinity pool - the largest and most remarkable pool of its type in all of Tahiti. Perfect for families, leisure travellers wanting a long weekend away or en route to the outer islands and of course for the business traveller staying for longer periods, Manava Suite Resort combines the freedom and privacy of an apartment with the services and amenities of a hotel, set with spectacular views over the lagoon and nearby island of Moorea.

REDEFINING LAID-BACK LUXURY AND SHOWCASING A POLYNESIAN INSPIRED SPA

T

he Nautilus Resort is pure South Pacific beachfront luxury overlooking Rarotonga’s sparkling white-sanded Muri Beach and lagoon and just 20 minutes by road from Rarotonga’s international airport. Here you can unwind and rejuvenate in one of Nautilus Resort’s Polynesian inspired one, two or three bedroom ares (villas) each with a private salt-water plunge pool, air conditioning, luxurious bathroom with free-standing bath and rain-shower, kitchen or kitchenette with microwave and refrigerator, extensive entertainment system and big furnished patio that flows seamlessly from indoors to outdoors. Opened only in late 2014, redefining laid-back luxury, the 4.5 star rated Nautilus Resort also presents their award winning beachfront restaurant & cocktail bar and traditional Polynesian Spa. Accommodation is in cool elegant villas, each decorated in Polynesian chic style, spread over one single level, and furnished to elegant luxury standards. Choose between two or three bedroom villas with ensuites, full kitchen, eating area (light tropical breakfast provided daily in the restaurant), lounge and dining terrace and private plunge pool, or the junior suite, with king bed, ensuite and kitchenette, in either an absolute beachfront setting or with garden views. From the Reception you are shown to your ‘Are’ by one of the friendly Guest Service Attendants – everyone already seems to know your name as a welcoming ‘kia orana’ calls out from each passing staff member – that’s when you know you’ve made the right choice. To sit on your own private deck with a complimentary bottle of Nautilus wine looking out upon the crystal clear waters of Muri Lagoon, is truly an experience to be cherished. Or perhaps a wander around the resorts gardens discovering a range of local fruits that are there for your enjoyment – experiencing local produce straight off the tree – as nature intended it. The Spa nautilus is a tropical haven offering indoor or open-air courtyards, a serene environment embracing and promoting tranquility and relaxation in beautiful tropical surroundings with a wide range of treatments for both men and women. This Polynesian inspired spa facility offers a range of traditional and western influenced internationally recognised Thalgo La Beaute product treatments and packages. The spa’s point of difference is their in-house professional spa treatment therapists trained in international hotel spas who specialise in the marine based Thalgo rituals from relaxing body and scalp massages, invigorating aromatherapy, soothing body treatments such as ‘Deep Tissue Therapy,’ classic facials and eye treatments, manicures and pedicures now included in the spa’s treatment menu.

75

The ‘Hot Stone’ and shellac nail polish finishes, waxing and eyebrow and eyelash tinting are new treatments that the resort has also just introduced. However, one of the best ways to rejuvenate your body and mind is to choose from the Nautilus Signature Menu, including hot stone therapy; holistic back, face and scalp massage, body wrap and other full body therapies; and after your treatment, slip into the rain shower to complete the refreshing and enlivening experience. This is where one can lavish in the soothing treatments while at the same time ‘feeling at one’ with nature. After a rejuvenating spa experience, enjoy lunch or dinner in the resort’s award winning restaurant overlooking the stunning waters of Muri Lagoon, that introduces Cook Island signature tastes and experiences. This restaurant was 2015 Winner of La Chaine des Rotisserurs and Cook Islands Chefs Association Restaurant of the Year Award. The cuisine is Polynesian with some European fusion enhanced by harvesting local seasonal ingredients with of course an emphasis on organic fresh produce and the delicious advantage of freshly caught seafood delicacies. The restaurant is open from 7.30am for breakfast which drifts through to lunch and a mouth-watering all day menu and then slides effortlessly

76

through Nauti Hour (aka Happy Hour) and into dinner. And you can’t visit Nautilus without trying the famous Nauti Mojito! Arguably the best Mojito on the island with a couple of secret ingredients and the pioneer of the sugar cane swivel stick...it is, as they say, Nauti & nice! The restaurant and bar are open to the public so you don’t have to be a guest at the Resort to sample the great dishes coming out of the kitchen or the wicked cocktails from the bar – it’s worth making a booking though; this place gets busy. If you’re not totally content lazing by the pool pondering your next meal, there are complimentary kayaks, stand up paddleboards and snorkeling equipment for all guests. If that sounds too active, try a massage in the on-site Day Spa. Alternatively, the Guest Service Attendants will happily organise everything & anything else for you – car hire, restaurant reservations, activity bookings – nothing seems to be too much trouble. One thing you won’t feel about a visit to Nautilus, whether as an in house guest or a diner at the restaurant, is let down. This place is setting new standards in the islands and should be on everyone’s Cook Islands holiday bucket list.

Herne Bay’s newest foodie spot, Paris Butter, is officially open and has seen much success since opening doors in May. Executive Chef Nick Honeyman, together with his business partner Jeff Costello has transformed the iconic site of Vinnies restaurant into a French influenced restaurant, at 166 Jervois Road. Chef Honeyman has extensive training in French cuisine, which sees him take on the Executive Chef of ‘Le Petit Leon’ Restaurant, just outside of Bordeaux each European summer. Paris Butter offers a fresh take on the classic French bistro fare with a menu that changes with the seasons. You can’t walk past Paris Butter without being wowed by its fabulous interior! Olga Skorik of Ermitage Design gave it a ‘retro chic’ feel using custom designed crystal chandeliers, European chairs, Parisian art and custom NZ ceramics. “I came to realize that designing a restaurant is almost like designing a theatre set – you can imagine the restaurant filled with a comfortable glow and the buzz of vibrant patrons. I wanted the interior to be inviting, comfortable and enchanting,” says Olga. | parisbutter.co.nz

Broadbeach Dining Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach’s chic restaurant, room81, has been awarded Two Chef Hats by Australian Good Food Guide (AGFG), at their award ceremony earlier this year. Receiving the two Chef Hats was a rich reward for Chef Sam Moore and the room81 team following the successful delivery of their unique degustation concept to the Gold Coast market. room81 now sits in the top echelon of ‘Hatted’ Gold Coast restaurants, with only three other restaurants in the region holding Two Hats. The AGFG review and accolade marks an amazing 12 months in the kitchen for Sam, and a realization of an ambitious vision conceived over 18 months ago where he dared his team to raise the bar and strive for excellence, ultimately taking the leap from one hat to two. room81.com.au

TAKING THE WORLD, ONE CHEF’S HAT AT A TIME

T

wo Chef’s Hats down with more triumph to follow; Sam Moore aged 26, is changing the way Australia experiences fine dining at room81 restaurant. Located at Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach, room81 has been awarded two Chef’s Hats from the Australian Good Food Guide. The highly commendable status is held by only three restaurants on the Gold Coast and is the result of hard work, flawless technique and the implementation of successfully pushing boundaries with exquisite cuisine. Challenge is not unfamiliar territory for Sam, who had his first professional job at 14 years of age. Sam’s passion and experience helped him to deal with often overwhelming work environments, whilst he equipped himself with the knowledge and technique that would see him travel to Europe and Australia’s east coast; where he worked in numerous highend restaurants. By the time Sam landed his position as Chef De Cuisine at room81, he had finessed and cultivated his technique; challenging his team to aim higher, push boundaries and escalate the way room81 customer’s experience fine dining. Thus room81’s new dining concept, degustation, was created. room81’s latest menu is a culinary art created by Sam himself. Degustation takes room81 diners on a culinary experience they’ll remember from the moment the meal is served.

80

The experience creates an interactive journey for room81 diners, seducing all bodily senses - leaving you wanting more. One of Sam’s signature dishes is the Valrhona Chocolate Sphere. Upon arrival, liquid nitrogen is slowly poured over it, creating a mesmerizing moment as smoke surrounds the succulent ball of now frozen chocolate, the satisfaction however comes from sound created as you crack open the heavenly dessert to reveal a variety of delicious, seasonal delights as smoke slowly drifts away. Another amazing dish is the scallops served two ways, hot and cold; every element of the dish had love put in to it; an experience that’s succulent both visually and on the palate. Hats off for Chef De Cuisine Sam Moore, the driving force behind room81’s two awarded Chef’s Hats from the Australian Good Food Guide. His fiery passion, dedication and early career has lead him to be one of Australia’s most successful young Chefs. Having been already awarded two Chef’s Hats at the age of 26 is a milestone in Sam’s career, one that also places room81 amongst the best of the best. It’s clear, being so young, that there will be many more culinary successes in the future for Sam, and we look forward to sampling every one of them!

MARLBOROUGH MAN

Peter Yealands labelled World-Class Peter Yealands

W

hile the world sits back and sips on our local Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, the man behind the grapes has stepped off the vineyard and into the spotlight for his bold thinking and innovation. Marlborough wine man Peter Yealands has taken a top honour at the Kea World Class New Zealand Awards last June. As an inspiration to Kiwis across the country, Peter has turned his passion into a premium business sweeping the globe, while holding his commitment to sustainability at the business’ core. A fusion of innovation and devotion to the land has turned him into one of the most influential blokes in the country. Peter is at the forefront of the wine industry with Yealands Estate Winery conquering world firsts such as carboNZeroCertTM certification from inception and implementing more unconventional initiatives at the winery such as installing solar powered speakers in the vineyard to play music across the vineyard to promote vine health. With the award firmly in his grasp, Peter reflected on his journey thus far, “This award captures and demonstrates the free spirit of every New Zealander. I have been very fortunate, but it takes more than good fortune to reach a goal, it takes determination and perseverance.” Peter now spends most of his time at the vineyard, focusing on more of the vineyard initiatives. Though he feels most at home behind a digger, he still manages to put in the hard yards across every level of this top-tier brand. “It takes time and a lot of hard work but most of all it takes a team effort. It’s teamwork that has put me where I am today and it will be team work that will put me where I am going,” said Yealands. Peter’s story extends far beyond his collection of vineyards. A true entrepreneur, he’s started movements both on land and in sea. His successes stretch from beginning a marine farming movement with Greenshell Mussels to establishing one of the New Zealand’s most successful deer farms. The World Class New Zealand Awards, presented annually by Kea, recognises world-class Kiwis making a difference to New Zealand’s economic, social and cultural development.

A Sundowner Spot to Rival Most Others

…ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE AUCKLAND VENUES! Recently undergoing a modest but totally modern ‘facelift’, Tom Tom Bar & Eatery finds itself at the forefront of our minds as an ideal location to play ‘hostess with the mostess’ for our next celebration. Ideally located on the fringe of Victoria Park (downtown Auckland), Tom-Tom’s has it all - distinct seating areas for various menu offerings, a vibrant but relaxed vibe and an outdoor balcony to rival most others. Maintaining a slick downtown vibe whilst sympathetic to the building’s industrial heritage, Tom Tom Bar & Eatery is a newly developed Gastro bar housed in a historically significant site, Victoria Park Market; Auckland’s oldest refuse station. Depending on the event, Tom Tom’s can manipulate their layout to suit anywhere from 20 to 430 guests and offer the choice of exclusive hire. For parties of less than 120, there is the option to host in either the dining area inside or out on their admired balcony in either the marquee or sheltered balcony. With Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower over its shoulder, the balcony is not only thriving as a sundowner spot but most nights continues to groove into the evening as its surrounding, but taller neighbours, light up the night sky. We love Tom Tom’s ability to go the extra mile to personalise your special occasion. The creative team specialises in decorating for themed parties and can work with most budgets to produce a themed event to remember. Their good-natured event manager Ayla proudly proclaims to us “we are yet to receive a request I cannot accommodate”. They also recently introduced a subsidy package so guests can choose to pay $5 for drinks and have the rest go on the organiser’s event tab. On the food front, Tom Tom’s engage an ethos of creative fine foods in a comfortable, unpretentious surrounding. Executive Chef Michael Kim continues to draw inspiration from around the world, producing quality dishes with New Zealand produce. So whether it is popping by for a quick bite to eat, an after work drink in the sun, a small triumph or a large bash, Tom Tom’s Bar and Eatery will flawlessly curate an experience you’ll keep going back for, and provide an events venue where you’ll find any cause to celebrate.

FRESHER FOOD FOR LONGER WITH

The Foodsaver

N

ew Zealand has an abundance of fresh produce and vegetables, from the local Saturday morning farmers market to the grocery store down the road. Nothing is better than cooking with fresh ingredients that are bursting with flavour. However, there’s always the flipside. That is, coming home to limp and soggy vegetables that have little resemblance to what you purchased a week ago. Not to mention the beautiful piece of fish that has to be eaten as soon as possible before it goes off. For many, this leads to food being thrown out, week and after week. In fact, New Zealanders waste an average of three shopping trolleys worth of food each year - approximately $500 worth! This is why Sunbeam has introduced the Foodsaver series. This product is designed to lengthen the life of your food - essentially giving users the gift of time. The normal storage life of fresh fruit and vegetables in the fridge lasts from 1 to 6 days. In the Foodsaver, the storage life is extended 1 to 2 weeks and between 1 to 3 years when stored in the freezer. The same principle can be applied to meat, with the Foodsaver allowing for safe storage in the fridge (without the nasty odours) or even 1 to 3 years when stored in the freezer. More than simply storing food, the Foodsaver protects nonproduce from oxidation, corrosion and moisture. The vacuum can be useful for keeping newborn baby clothes in good condition. Heading camping? The foodsaver can keep your first aid kit or matches clean and dry. If you’re the creative type in the kitchen, take advantage of the vacuum seal packs to experiment with marinades which absorb into foods in a fraction of the time in your Foodsaver bag, and then when it’s time to cook, simply pop the bag into boiling water. The Foodsaver stays true to it’s name, saving you food, prep time in a simple and effective way.

C

rowned winner of ‘2015 Visa Wellington on a Plate’, Zibibbo, is considered Wellingtons best contemporary restaurant. The established restaurant & tapas bar is the brainchild of husbandwife duo - Michelin star Chef Adam Newell and partner Nicola. A go-to in Wellington for a cosy vibe, perfectly balanced cocktail and consistently high-quality cuisine, we caught up with Nicola to find out a little more about their road to triumph and what makes Zibibbo a winner for Wellington locals time and time again. Firstly, give us an insight into a night at Zibibbo… You can expect a warm welcome, a delicious meal and professional friendly service in a relaxed environment. A typical night might start with a cocktail in the bar by the open fire, then a meal in the restaurant comprised of some starter dishes to share, a main, and then the beautiful artistic dessert tapas. Your husband, Chef Adam Newell is Michelin star accredited. What an honor! How did he achieve this? Adam’s originally from England, where he did his chefs training before working in some of London’s top restaurants and hotels: Claridges, Mayfair Intercontinental and the 3-Michellin star Le Gavroche. His early career also included stints in France and New York. After learning from some formidable and talented chefs, Adam achieved his own Michellin star in 1995 as Head Chef at Fulham Road restaurant, London. How did Adam end up in New Zealand? After achieving the Michellin Star Adam wanted to try something and somewhere different and Japanese food was very fashionable at the time. In 1996 he moved to Tokyo and was working for Le Cordon Bleu. LCB had a contract to provide the Executive Chef to a local 5-star hotel, and the hotel also happened to employ New Zealanders. So Adam was the Chef, I was working in the restaurant, and the rest is history! Adam moved to New Zealand when his contract finished in 1997, we were married in 2000, and opened Zibibbo seven months later. What are the gastronomy influences at Zibibbo? Zibibbo’s food is pan-Mediterranean using dishes and ingredients from Spain, France and Italy. We use classic flavour combinations and a mix of classic cooking techniques and some modern techniques too. We believe that food has to look good, smell good, and taste fantastic.

Where does the name Zibibbo originate from? Zibibbo is a type of Muscat grape grown on the Island of Pantelleria in Italy. There’s a delicious dessert wine on our wine list made from the Zibibbo grape. What is your favourite dish on the menu right now? Definitely the lamb. We use a sous vide machine to poach the lamb in a sealed vac-packed bag at a constant temperature. It comes out perfectly cooked and beautifully tender. We then give it a quick finish in our wood-oven to enhance the flavour. What’s the history of the building Zibibbo is housed in? It was built in the 1910s, and was a Police Station from then until the 1980s. It had been derelict for more than 10 years when we started the restaurant fit-out and it was in a real mess. The whole interior had to be gutted, which was a good opportunity to earthquake strengthen it. The only thing that’s remaining of the original interior is the beautiful staircase railing, which is heritage listed. The exterior of the building is basically untouched apart from some new paint. When we were doing the fit-out we had to cut a hole in the roof to lower the large kitchen equipment in by crane. When we cut into the roof we discovered the original rimu beams, which we recycled into the wooden boards our tapas platters are served from now. For those trying to emulate classic tapa style feasting at home, what would your top tip be? Tapas don’t have to be complicated. Use a variety of colours and textures, and keep it simple. Does Zibibbo’s bar have a signature drink? Our Bar manager Matteo has put together a list of exciting unique cocktails like the Lavender Smoked Old-Fashioned, which is our current guest favourite and quickly becoming our signature. It’s a classic old fashioned whisky reinvented with house-made lavender water and served from a small glass jar which is filled with lavender smoke.

Delmaine Fine Foods

AUTHENTIC, DELICIOUS and THOUGHTFUL

S

ome of the best dishes we come across in our lives are Italian and Mediterranean based recipes. Every element counts in making these dishes exquisite, especially the time and care put into producing the best of ingredients. Delmaine is one of the few companies which understands the importance of creating food that is cared for from the time it is planted, to the time it is packed. Through combining the traditional taste of Europe with the latest culinary enhancement, Delmaine has produced a versatile range of premium fine foods - perfect for any dining occasion.

94

Flash back to nearly 35 years ago. The company recognised New Zealand was unfamiliar with popular European food products. It was an untapped market with too much potential to ignore, and so Delmaine was born, introducing New Zealand to the best of olives and sundried tomatoes - - which despite their popularity in Europe at the time were almost unknown here. Established in 1980, Delmaine became a 100% New Zealand owned business enjoying over 30 years of success. The secret to that success was the company’s attention to detail and dedication to excellence in producing the finest products, with the

finest ingredients so that New Zealanders may have the best of premium foods in their cupboards and on their tables. Delmaine now appears in over 35 food categories which include a range of chilled products including pasta, sauces, soups and pesto as well as pantry products such as breads, cakes, sauces, dessert toppings and vinegars. On top of producing a versatile range of high end food products, Delmaine strives to ensure their products are accessible to a wide range of customers, providing a selection of products that are gluten free and naturally free of artificial colour and flavouring - promoting healthy eating,

on these relationships, while developing new ones, is an important part of the process that brings the best of European foods to New Zealand. So for example instead of stuffing olives with paste, Delmaine use pure, real ingredients where possible, such as whole cloves of garlic, Greek cheese and balsamic vinegar for different variations. Delmaine Kalamata olives are from the Kalamata region in Greece after which the king olive was named. Delmaine only uses sundried tomatoes that are ruby red in colour. Upon arrival in New Zealand these are then marinated by hand at the Delmaine Auckland premises - so we can be assured what we are eating is authentic and natural. We New Zealanders are acquiring more cultured culinary tastes due to our increased interest in the world’s dining customs. This means we are constantly trying new recipes to experience the food of the world from the comfort of our own homes and Delmaine understands what makes a product the best for our recipes. Things like quality, versatility and knowing that what you use is the same as the original are vital to acquiring the

true potential and taste of what these dishes hold. Their practise of using fresh egg instead of egg powder to make their pasta, creating products with a good shelf life, while still remaining fresh and sourcing authentic products from their traditional locations is what continues to make Delmaine fine food products New Zealand’s leading supplier of food products to top hotels, restaurants and cafes, as well as all major supermarket chains. Through the combination of traditional European foods with the latest culinary enhancement, Delmaine has been, and will continue to be New Zealand’s ‘go to’ brand for premium fine foods. From olives to gluten free choices, Delmaine sources the best of European foods for us to experience in our way, to our liking. What really makes the brand attractive however, is the dedication to producing all round quality in both the food and services provided - which shows us that Delmaine, is truly committed to serving New Zealanders the best of the best.

catering not just to our palates but enhancing our lifestyles. Delmaine understands that the enjoyment developed from consuming food is through offering quality, authentic ingredients that can be used as we please. These products are sourced from traditional locations, for example Delmaine Vinegar is sourced from Modena in Italy and the Carnaroli and Arborio rice from Italy (as not all rices are created equal). This ability to source authentic products is the result of a strong relationship with Dalmaine’s European partners, who are all dedicated food manufacturers. Continuing to build

An Auckland Classic

THAT WILL NEVER BE OFF TREND

A

ntoine’s Restaurant is one of Auckland longest standing fine-dining restaurants and 44 years on, Antony Astle and his team continues to successfully compete with the latest and greatest, providing Auckland gourmands with a faultless dining experience time and time again. Their secret? Well this issue we asked Tony himself, and this is what he told us‌

98

Antoine’s has been operating for an impressive 44 years. What’s your secret? I think the fundamentals of our success are our tenacity and love for what we do. I was lucky enough to find a profession I love at an early age and even luckier to have a partner, my wife Beth, who believes in the same concepts as myself. I could not have lasted in restaurant industry without her backing and endurance. She still comes to the restaurant every day. During this time, you must have seen many trends come and go. What food trends will never go out of fashion? Food trends come and go and we all get caught up in them. However they are trends. We must not forget the basis and simplicity of the natural product. Simple is best. I think it is important to not forget the product you are preparing is the hero. Not the Chef! How does service contribute to the overall ambiance in a restaurant? The food is extremely important, however the food can be great but if the staff serving does not perform nor believe in the product they are serving, it all falls over. There is a total package, not one or the other. Also front of house can make or break a restaurant; first impressions are relevant in restaurants to. What fine dining traditions do you believe should not be kept in the past? “Fine Dining” [in New Zealand] now means something completely different from what it should be. In New Zealand, fine dining seems to mean expensive or anything above the ‘norm’. How many so called fine dining restaurants staff have no idea about silver service? We find these days very few wait staff have any idea of how to even use a spoon and fork for serving, let along knowing anything about table cooking. Fine dining is a hotel concept that is an atmosphere made complete with a combination of food, service and wine. It is about having classic starched table cloths and napkins, not bare essentials and hard surfaces, and conversation while eating, not loud music and drop and run service.

Antoine’s has two menus, what is the purpose behind offering a nostalgia and table menu? Our two menus are designed for a specific purpose. There is ‘Nostalgia’, which is made up of items that have been Antoine’s staples for four decades but forever changing in presentation. Our signature dishes are the ones we find people return for time and time again, such as Tripe, Onion Soup, Duck, Oxtail and Bread & butter pudding. Our other menu is for younger and new customers. It also helps to keep the young chef’s interested with new techniques.

Tony Astle

Have you noticed more customers seeking simplicity in their dishes? In short yes. Customers are becoming more interested in simple dishes such as Steak done simply but cooked perfectly. We are sure to return to simplicity but that does not mean we will revert to years gone by. We learn from our past trends but in the end our produce has improved ten fold. Lastly, what are your favourite items on the menu? Our classics – Oxtail, Tripe, Bread & Butter pudding & of course the Onion Soup. Nostalgia menu is special to me.
