What is your favourite food?” This is a question I cannot answer. One day it’s pizza, and the next day it’s fine dining and then it’s tacos with all the stuffing falling out. Food is mood dependent and I have no favourite but my love for good food runs deep. I love food; I love thinking about it, talking about it, cooking it and of course eating it! This issue we have been inspired by the immigrants who have settled in our country offering us a taste of their world. Our flip cover sends some love to this group of people who have come to New Zealand, and opened great restaurants and worked hard to produce awesome food. A big thank you and high five to you all! On this side our cover features the Rexton Ssangyong, with all the bells and whistles. This car is big! It can move, it looks so stylish and is only $39,990+ORC! See pages 56 to 57 for our fun beach shoot. We have the pleasure of driving one of these and have been seriously impressed by the Chanel styled beast with it’s ease and style all in one big gorgeous package. Summer is here and our habits change - we stay up later, we spend more time outside, we shop more, and we dine out more. My summer is going to be spent up North with my amazing husband, wonderful step children and my perfect grandchild. I am grateful for every moment I spend with them all. The summer deadlines and Christmas rush will be mad but I know how happy we all are to be together over this holiday period. I will crash on Christmas day with a bowl of trifle and glass of something alcoholic in my hand simply being grateful for my world. I hope you too can find your ‘grateful’ space and create a life of contentment for yourself. ASC Salon, we are so sorry for the wrong advert printed in the last issue – here is their brand advert that we should have printed, and it is gorgeous. Our faux pas so big whoops to us. Enjoy the summer

How Does TruSculpt ID Work? TruSculpt ID employs a unique form of low frequency monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates deep into the adipose tissue and is able treat the entire fat pad. Given each patient’s unique biological complex the TruSculpt ID is able to adjust the energy output to compensate for fibrous tissue ensuring each patient receives an optimally effective treatment.
How Is The Procedure Performed? An initial evaluation is performed to frame the desired treatment areas. A total of 6 hand pieces may be used to target an area that is larger than 3 Cool Sculpting cool max applicators (approximately 12 SculpSure applicators). Each hand piece is gently applied using a piece of double sided tape and then wrapped around the body ensuring full contact. Patients have reported experiencing mild heat with an overall high level of comfort during the 15 minute session.
How Do I Know If I Am A Candidate? Unlike other non-invasive fat removal procedures such as cool sculpting and SculpSure TruSculpt ID does not have any BMI (body mass index) or weight restrictions. Almost anyone can be treated with the TruSculpt ID.
How Many Treatments Will I Need? 95% of patients will only require 1 treatment per area! We can treat multiple (as many as 3) areas in a single 15 minute session!
Is The Treatment Painful? No! Patients report the treatment feels like a warm stone massage. Some feel the heat in the first minute to be a bit intense but then adjust to the treatment.
How Long Before I See My Results? Results will be noticeable immediately (firming, improved skin tone and texture, some reduction), however, fat cells are removed over a period of time and maximum results will be achieved at 12 weeks. Megan grew up with a very strong sense of community, so keeping that close is very important to her. In this modern day lifestyle, we are losing community in lots of ways and as it’s a value of hers she tries hard to keep it solid. 10 years ago Megan was the founder and chairperson of The Franklin Silver Lining Trust, which was created to give special breaks to our local people going through times of adversity over the past 10 years The Franklin Silver Lining Trust has now given 1,000’s of breaks to local families. Recently, Megan has also been the driving force behind the new initiative to bring a mind health centre to the area as a resource & education facility for young adults, equipping them with tools and skills to cope with the modern pressures and stresses that are rapidly becoming an epidemic...she was the promoter, organiser and a fighter in the big charity boxing fight night event held in August in Pukekohe with $60,000 raised in one night! You will often notice through Facebook when Tina has incoming arrivals, you will see her and her son out on rescues or updating following vet visits. Her organisation rescues and fosters dogs with the help of her awesome army of foster carers before they are rehomed in their forever home. Tina has found dozens of dogs their forever home, she puts in endless hours of work in order to save these dogs. South Auckland Puppy Surrender has a strong ethos and is committed to having all dogs desexed and vaccinated before they leave their care most of this is done during Tina’s ‘free time’. ou may have seen the headline ‘Perfume is the new second-hand smoke’?. Which makes me feel a bit silly for all the times i’ve stopped to compliment a wearer on what now appears to be ‘eau de toxin’!. So is it media sensationalism? Unfortunately not… Whilst the ancient art of perfumery involved plants - herbs, spices, oils, fruit and flower extracts, resins etc - the vast majority of todays ‘perfumes’ or ‘fragrances’ contain an average of 14 synthetic substances, and they’re not required to list them. The effects of these chemicals can be short-term - breathing issues, headaches, nausea and brain fog - or potentially more sinister, with some linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergies. Many are also endocrine disruptors - compounds that meddle with our delicately balanced hormonal system - so can trigger weight gain. We affectionately call these ‘chemical calories’. My suggestion is to seek out organic, natural fragrances based on essential oils and/or plant extracts. Or learn to blend your own with carrier oil and organic essential oils. But if you can’t bear to part with that expensive perfume just yet, try and save it for special occasions only, and spray lightly onto clothing or hair rather than directly to the skin. And please keep in mind, your aromatic addiction may also be someone elses ‘second-hand smoke’.

EXCEPTION MARINE REDENSIFYING TREATMENT Exclusive Energilift Technique ANTI-SLACKENING - DENSITY
THE FIRST MARINE LIFTING FACIAL WITH PATENTED MARINE REPLENISHMENT COMPLEX.. WINNER OF THE ANTI-AGEING PRODUCT LINE OF THE YEAR AT THE ASIASPA AWARDS IN NOVEMBER 2018.

fter the age of 50, intrinsic ageing accentuated by exposure to urban pollution destabilises the skin structure. With 16 years of research on Natural Algae Hormones and in light of new discoveries on mitochondrial aging, THALGO reveals EXCEPTION MARINE. This effective PROFESSIONAL MARINE LIFTING Facial works to re-sculpt the facial contours, redensifies the skin and fills out wrinkles. At the heart of the THALGO Exceptional Redensifying Facial, is the Exclusive THALGO ENERGILIFT TECHNIQUE which works to correct sagging skin, drooping and the loss of volume on different areas of the face. The THALGO ENERGILIFT TECHNIQUE is a GENUINE MANUAL FACELIFT developed in collaboration with a beauty therapist and an aesthetic doctor, this massage is the only professional technique that works all of the face, neck, décolleté and hands. Deep, rhythmic stimulations help re-oxygenate the skin, restoring its tone and firmness. From the first treatment, the volumes are repositioned and the contours of the face are re-sculpted. This session is orchestrated for 20 minutes and ends with a relaxing massage of the neck, décolleté and arms for total internal and external relaxation.
VISIBLE EFFECTIVENESS AFTER THE FIRST TREATMENT • IMMEDIATE LIFTING EFFECT • Significant decrease in FACIAL CONTOUR DROOPING • Significant improvement in REPOSITIONING THE VOLUMES cheekbones, nasolabial folds, wrinkles For the best result use in synergy with the three specific homecare products to help re-sculpt the facial contours, redensify the skin and fill out wrinkles. See what one of our THALGO Beauty Experts Lorraine Lindsay, BODY AMBIENCE, Nelson says about THALGO Exception Marine. “My star client has enjoyed THALGO Exceptional Facials for years. As she travels a lot, she diligently uses the three Exception homecare products. In between she uses THALGO Silicium range. She constantly says that people mention her beautiful skin and how young she looks. I use Thalgo Exception and prefer it to the injectables and fillers that I used to have. INA FEIMI Ina Feimi, the oldest daughter of an Albanian family, with roots in the hospitality business. Ina Feimi came to New Zealand two years ago with her partner, Stuart Deeks; to build a new business together. After searching all over the world for a concept that they both would love, they finally found Proper Pizza. Ina didn’t know much at the time about pizza. Her expertise was in a different field but she is a very fast learner. For months she has studied the product, the New Zealand market and also building relationships with the local suppliers. She has worked into building the branding, adapting it to this country and also helping with the menu. Proper Pizza delivers outstanding pizza, the type you have never tried before and will become addicted to. Together, Ina and Stuart own the trademarks for two different concepts and they have two stores in the CBD in Auckland. Ina’s days are kept busy working for the two businesses, creating manuals and checking that operationally they don’t have problems that will affect the outgoing of the shops. Also keeping an eye on the social media and has a passion and flair for fashion. After living in Europe she found herself drowned by fashion – she considers beauty to be so important.
Who’s your fashion icon? It would have to be Coco Chanel and Grace Kelly. What perfume are you currently using? The perfume I’m using at present is Dolce and Gabbana L ’ Imperatrice. Where’s your favourite tropical travel destination? Isle de Pine in New Caledonia, it’s so beautiful. What’s your go-to spring fashion accessory? My Fendi Silk scarf. What’s your favourite restaurant right now? Oyster and Chop, we often chose to dine there as I love oysters!

Getting to Know Brodie Kane BRODIE KANE IS A FORCE OF NATURE. THE HITS BREAKFAST CO-HOST HAS WON LISTENERS OVER WITH HER STORIES THAT ARE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, PERSONAL, HILARIOUS AND BOLD. BOTH ON THE RADIO AND ON HER POPULAR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES, BRODIE HAS A UNIQUE AND GENUINE RELATIONSHIP WITH HER FOLLOWERS.
B
ased in Christchurch, Brodie came to Auckland earlier this year to host Eye Magazine’s What Women Want. We sat down with Brodie to ask about the event and how she finds balance in her busy life. This year, you hosted Eye Magazine’s What Women Want. What made you want to take this opportunity on? It’s always so cool to be involved in events where you are surrounded by wonderful people, enjoying themselves and celebrating being who they are. I love talking to and meeting people, so it’s an added bonus to be asked to MC events like this when that’s exactly what I can do! What was your favourite part of the event? Do you know what? The whole thing was just brilliant! The food, the people, the vibe, the energy in the room - it was all fantastic. It’s a great event and the dancers at the start were AMAZING. Your Instagram, and your stories, in particular, are extremely popular. Why do you think people find your content so relatable & enjoyable? To be honest, most of the stuff I post is what I’d talk or laugh about with my mates - and if I’m not with them, it’s my way of sharing it with
40
them! It just so happens that other people seem to find it a bit entertaining too. I am also just unashamedly me. What you see is what you get - I just am who I am. I probably say too much, swear too much and share too much, but that’s all part of what people enjoy. Sometimes, I wake up and think “oh sh*t, who wants to watch drunk me singing terribly in a bar?!” but you’ve just got to own who you are, right?! Also this year I’ve had a lot of people follow my build up to running my first marathon which has been quite amazing! You have a very busy work schedule - what do you do to relax? I am actively trying to relax more. I don’t do enough of it and it often comes back to bite me. in the arse. I over-commit to things and constantly have to live moment-to-moment dictated by what’s in my diary. The reason I’m like this is because I like to think it’s important to make the most of opportunities while you can. But now I’m also telling myself it’s ok to sit down and breathe for a moment. Maybe that can be my 2019 resolution!

The range is continually evolving and consists of one of a kind and limited edition pieces inspired by the New Zealand’s incredible ‘Middle Earth’ landscape. “The idea came to me while ski touring in north Canterbury. We stopped for lunch on a ridge overlooking the Wilberforce river and the snow covered southern alps in the distance,” explains Greg. “I was totally in awe of the view before me and It was then that I set about creating the range, paying homage to this incredible landscape that the world now knows through The Lord of the Rings.” The result? Stunning pieces that are wearable works of art - including the ‘Fox Glacier’ piece. This unique ring is handcrafted with platinum featuring diamonds along with a varying shades of aquamarine blue sapphires. It is styled in

Central Bark’s Summer Dog Tips:
W
alk your dog at the cooler times of the day, either first thing in the morning or early evening. Dogs’ paw pads can burn on hot pavements. As a general rule, if it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for their paws. Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their skin and so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature and keep cool. Imagine wearing a thick winter coat on a hot summer’s day and you’ll understand why dogs succumb to heatstroke so easily. Signs of heatstroke in dogs include collapse, excessive panting, and dribbling. If you suspect your pet is suffering from the condition, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat with cool not freezing - water, and contact your vet immediately. Don’t leave your pooch alone outside for long. And when he is there, make sure he has shade and lots of fresh, cool water. Add ice cubes when you can. Trees are better than doghouses for shade. They let air flow through.

our heritage
CR DESLEY SIMPSON
AS AUCKLAND INTENSIFIES WE ARE NOW GETTING A CITY WITH TOWERING OFFICE BLOCKS, HOTELS AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS.
H
owever, tucked in between some of these large modern structures there are over 2,200 scheduled historic heritage places, which Auckland Council is preserving as a tribute to our former days. You will easily recognise Auckland’s Town Hall constructed in 1909 and Auckland Museum built in 1929 but here are three heritage examples you may well not know. Bluestone Store The Bluestone Store on Durham Lane built in 1861 is considered to be the oldest stone building left in the commercial heart of the city. The building is unique in its ability to demonstrate the town’s initial role as an agricultural market and also reflects the rise of manufacturing industries in the city centre. The store has been associated with a variety of businesses, from boiled sweet production to the distribution of early chemical fertilizer and is currently operating as the Bluestone Room pub. Colonial Sugar Refining NZ Head Office This building on Quay St was erected in 1903 to house the Auckland office of the Colonial Sugar Company. Sugar was transported from the Chelsea Sugar Refinery in Birkenhead to the Quay Street building where it was stored prior to local distribution or export around New Zealand. In 1960 the building was transferred to the Police Department for use as a watch station for the wharf area. And finally a recent heritage memorial. Te Toka o Apihai Te Kawau While we all celebrate Auckland Anniversary Day in January (when the weather is better), not many people know that Auckland was actually founded on September 18, 1840. To help mark this important day Ports of Auckland and Ngati Whatua Orakei built this historical memorial located on Quay St in amongst the red fence.

The Art of Attraction
At the Art of Attraction breakfast, Dr Mike Ashby said that before you go off attracting hordes of new prospects, make sure you’re holding on to your existing customers. Start with a clear picture of customers you want to attract. Look at your best customers – what makes them great? Why do they do business with you? Think about your worst ones and avoid them! Create a powerful value proposition based on the job your customers are trying to do and address the pains they experience as well as the gains they’re looking for. Think about where your best customers hang out and create a presence there – fish where the fish are. Considered one of New Zealand’s top speakers and advisors, and author of Breakpoints, Dr Mike Ashby has helped hundreds of business leaders to change their businesses and their lives for good. Europe has gone big, bold, and vibrantly colourful with statement earrings and jewellery in both the fashion and fine jewellery arenas. Fabuleux Vous loves the trend and is crafting fabulous earrings and other delicately bold pieces to lead from the front in fine New Zealand style. Fashion jewellery and fine jewellery are usually separated in design concepts but that’s not true in current trends here or in Europe. Consider the examples of Fabuleux Vous’ cascading My Colourful Life, and their diamond-shaped Lacy earrings - large, yet elegantly feminine. Fabuleux Vous has managed a graceful balance between quality and cost. Quality always wins but the pieces remain affordable. Whether it’s fine sterling silver or a playful fashion piece, each is designed as an enduring classic. Each piece expresses life qualities: courage, commitment, kindness, celebration, respect, and love. Fabuleux Vous Jewellery director, Helen Thompson-Carter, lived a previous life as a terminal care nurse so understands these qualities intimately. Enabling the dying process with peace, grace, and dignity was a privilege. It’s one of the reasons this jewellery stands out, and Fabuleux Vous counts amongst their regular ‘Charities of Choice’, both Hospice and the Heart Foundation. Being a part of a community, and the gift of giving flourish within FV culture, but that’s not why you choose this gorgeous jewellery. You choose it because it expresses you, the deeper, most feminine you. Go bold, go vibrant, or go delicate, but choose for the YOU in your heart. fabuleuxvous.com

HOW IMMIGRANTS ARE DIVERSIFYING AND ENHANCING NEW ZEALAND’S FOOD SCENE 16
T
here’s no denying it, Auckland is a feast of great food. From authentic Mexican and fresh Japanese to delicious New Orleans, impeccable Italian cuisine and exotic Brazilian tapas and drinks, we are spoilt for choice in the City of Sails. The rest of the country is no different, with mouth-watering authentic restaurants seemingly opening up everywhere. Part of the reason Auckland has a plethora of great eateries is simple - immigration. New Zealand is a nation built on immigration with most New Zealanders easily able to trace their ancestry back to Asia, Europe or elsewhere. Immigrants bring with them a diverse language, background and of course, food. Stuart Deeks is known for bringing the successful coffee business, Esquires, to New Zealand. Then, along with his partner Ina Feimi, they launched the first Proper Pizza in Auckland, bringing the ultimate in European pizza to New Zealanders. Stuart met Ina during the very end of his time at Esquires. She was the CEO of her family’s business interests which included those in the hospitality industry and they immediately became friends. “After selling the business we fell in love and travelled together,” explains Stuart. “During this time she introduced me to Proper Pizza, which in Kosovo and her native Albania is the number one pizza brand. I loved it and would go so far as to say is the best pizza I ever tried!” It’s obvious to see the genuine confidence that both Stuart and Ina have in their product. Not only have both of them been incredibly involved in the operational side but also the cooking preparation involved them experimenting with recipes and ingredients. The result is clear from the first bite delicious, thin-crust pizza. After a long discussion, they acquired the rights to New Zealand and Australia and now the company has opened its first store outside of Europe in Auckland. “We had the opportunity to choose international brands that are already well-known in the New Zealand market,” explains Ina. “But after traveling around the world for two years, trying amazing dishes, seeing so many different concepts of cuisine, our hearts never forgot the joy we had when we tried Proper Pizza for the first time - and in the end that’s the road we chose to follow.” Annabelle’s restaurant in St Heliers is truly an icon of great food and flavours. A family-owned restaurant, it opened it’s doors 20 years ago in 1998. Owner Susan Cho and and her husband with their young son moved from South Korea and grew the restaurant from just 20 seats to 75, with Susan also receiving a master chef qualification from AUT. “I first came to New Zealand to gain a doctorate degree in horticulture. While already having a complete master’s qualification, it was only going to be a two-year study exchange,” explains Susan. “Instead, my husband and I decided to immigrate to New Zealand as we fell in love with the natural beauty of this place
17
but never in our wildest dreams did we think we would be owning a restaurant!” Growing up in South Korea, food always meant family time. For Susan, every dinner was suddenly transformed into quality time with the family. This was very different to how people spend their time dining nowadays where most people tend to eat by themselves or eat while looking at their phones or television, she explains. With shared meals and different side dishes, every moment involving food was transformed into a sharing moment. Susan’s husband Cho is an architect, and has been highly involved in the development of the interior design of the restaurant as is her son Sang, especially with the business development. “The waterfront inspired us to serve fresh seafood. Some of our dishes are classics and we are really well known for them with our changing seasonal menu. Our menu has mostly western food, always with a little Asian touch and also some fully Korean dishes,” says Susan. Ofir Yudilevich, Director of The Jefferson, Auckland premier whisky bar, was born in Israel and moved to New Zealand in 1988 as a teenager. “My parents had a restaurant so I got into hospitality at a young age and got into kitchens early on,” says Ofir. Ofir worked in many hotels before becoming New Zealand’s youngest Executive Chef at the age of 30 years old, running Langham Hotel, Auckland (now Cordis, Auckland). He then went on to the Philippines to open a Radisson Blu followed by working at the Intercontinental in Fiji. “I came back to New Zealand in 2015 and opened The Jefferson as a place for adults to hang out in a comfortable environment,” he adds. “Whisky is our focus as it is the biggest growing segment of the market and this drive is coming from women in their 30s so they have been our key target market.”
Ofir notes how his two sets of grandparents had weekly gatherings of the families, with everyone sitting all day and eating from midday till night time. One set was Israeli food and the other set was Russian-European influences. “I have been in New Zealand for 31 years,” says Ofir. “It is home and it’s amazing to see the changes in culture as we open our door to more immigrants from both Asia and Europe. It brings diversity and amazing food to New Zealand so it’s all very positive.” The couple behind Besos Latinos, Luis Cabrera and Cecilia Mijangos, echo a similar love of food growing up in Mexico City. Luis explains the importance of food in Mexico, with both he and Cecilia hailing from very large families where an average Sunday lunch could easily have no less than 20 people! Latin America is known for a great variety of recipes, techniques and flavours. “We arrived [in New Zealand] in 2009 with the intention of moving to Sydney, Australia where I had a job offer. Things quickly changed when I had the opportunity to work as the Sous Chef at Non Solo Pizza in Parnell and had the honour to work with Head Chef Antonio Crisci. Through Non Solo Pizza we got a work visa and decided to stay longer than planned!” explains Luis. “After a couple of years working with them, we saw the lack of authentic Mexican restaurants in New Zealand.” Eight years later, Besos Latinos opened its doors, the first Mexican/Latin-American gourmet restaurant in New Zealand. Luis has cooked for All Blacks, rock stars, TV personalities, and even President Obama. Along with managing the restaurant,
Cecilia supports several charity organizations in Latin America and also tirelessly promotes the Latin American culture to kiwis through different events such as the popular “NPH - Latin American Market”. Rather than slowing down, the duo has a new restaurant opening in Wynyard Quarter in 2019. “For us it is very important to represent our culture, traditions and gastronomy in the best possible way to New Zealanders,” says Luis. “We are proud of our origins and maintaining our culture in our business keeps us motivated and passionate about what we do. We come from a warm and friendly part of the world and we enjoy sharing that warmness and love with our customers.” Since then, New Zealand has continued to experience a range of food and styles of eating from this region. Durello’s Marcelo Menoita and his wife Barbara, moved to New Zealand 10 years ago to give themselves and their children a better environment to call home. “I was born in Brazil and learned from an early age that food is one of the best ways of bringing people together,” says Marcelo. Marcelo explains that in Brazil, everything important happens around food. From family gatherings to business meetings to kids parties, if you want to please someone, you share a meal with them. So food is not only what you eat, but it’s a huge part of what you are as a person, regardless if you’re 8 years old or 80! “Everything I’ve learnt in the kitchen was with my mum, Neide Durello. Mum who is of Italian origins was born and raised in the countryside of Brazil,. She was one of nine children, which made her soon realise that love and affection combined with good food were essential ingredients for shared moments of happiness within the family,” adds Marcelo. Almost 60 years and four generations later, Marcelo is bringing some of his Brazilian delicacies to New Zealanders, with the same passion and dedication his family has been doing for decades. Their Brazilian tapas bar will be the first of its kind in New Zealand. It will bring people a taste of the Brazilian culture, in a relaxed and yet sophisticated manner. Amazing tapas, surprising drinks, exciting music all in a happy tropical atmosphere. “Barbara and I have travelled, either for business or pleasure to more than 45 nations, so we did have a few options,” says Marcelo. “Canada, Portugal and the US were on the list, but as soon as we started looking into New Zealand, we knew that this was it. We want to raise our grandchildren here, New Zealand is home for us.” We invite you to try these restaurants, and other places, that share a piece of their culture and rich food history with us. There’s no doubt, that behind New Zealand’s thriving food scene are hard-working immigrants with a common story: a love for their culture and a desire to share this with New Zealanders, in the place they now call home.

A brand new Caesarstone joins the industrial urban aesthetic
OXIDISED STEEL, WEATHERED CEMENT AND ROUGHHEWN TIMBER ARE THE NEW STARS OF KITCHEN DESIGN – AND CAESARSTONE’S VERY LATEST ENGINEERED STONE BOTH EMULATES AND ENHANCES THESE LOOKS.
Kitchen Island, Splashback & Benchtop | Excava™ 4046 | Rough Finish Cabinetry | Melteca® Blackened Elm

T
he new industrial urban kitchen aesthetic inspired Caesarstone to create the world’s first weathered, textured engineered stone characterised by the bold patinas of casting and oxidising. Excava, from the Metropolitan collection, cleverly combines the beautifully raw features of rust and concrete in a lowreflective matte surface finish. Evoking the sense of decaying stone, weathered by time and nature, Excava is a sublime, layered mix of warm taupes, rusts, copper and deep browns. Its rough concrete finish has a subtle coarseness yet cleaning is effortless, as with all Caesarstone surfaces.
Ideal partners for this look are timber or concrete floors, stainless steel or iron fittings and leather seating. Soft, greyed blues and greens for painted or tiled walls are the perfect counterbalance. And as with other industrial materials, Excava’s inherent characteristics are strength, longevity and durability. It’s a material designed to last and retain its sublime good looks for a lifetime and more. Excava, from the Caesarstone Metropolitan collection, is available nationally. Famed chef Heston Blumenthal brings his BBQ range to NZ AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - RESTAURANT HEAVYWEIGHTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY, VIP GUESTS, INFLUENCERS, AND CELEBRITIES GATHERED IN ANTICIPATION TO MEET ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS AND INNOVATIVE CHEFS, HESTON BLUMENTHAL. uests were whisked away to Kauri Bay Boomrock

for a full sensory experience like no other. The exclusive venue is found in Clevedon and boasts stunning vistas of Waiheke, Ponui, Coromandel
and beyond. From the misty mornings to the soft crackle of the fire, Heston couldn’t help but comment on the beauty of New Zealand, even while working. Here to launch Everdure by Heston Blumenthal, guests were invited to see the range up close, meet Heston himself and sample some delicious food prepared by The Fat Duck Group. “It was an honour to come to New Zealand and explain my philosophy behind the range. It was inspired by the evolution of
cooking and the importance of valuing each ingredient, each dish, each piece of coal. I do believe it is something that we have lost and the Everdure range was designed to bring love and enjoyment back to the art of cooking and eating,” says Heston. Everdure by Heston Blumenthal is a range of BBQs like no other. Working closely with designers and engineers, Heston embarked on a mission to create the perfect modern BBQ. From quick-starting charcoal to the convenience of gas, they’ve each been designed from the ground up, with a modern design aesthetic and the latest technology. “It was a real privilege and a pleasure to have Heston join us in New Zealand to celebrate the launch of the latest addition to the Everdure by Heston Blumenthal BBQ range – the 4K,” says Tane Poulson, Housewares General Manager at Monaco Corporation. “We have spent a long time developing this product and we are very proud of the result, the 4K really is the ultimate in barbequing. The entire range is equipped with many practical and personal features which enable every weekend warrior to become their own BBQ champion.” Heston and his team from The Fat Duck Group served up a one-of-a-kind menu for the 100 guests on the Everdure by Heston Blumenthal barbecues. With finesse, they effortlessly showcased the limitlessness of the cuisine served using the range. The menu featured locally sourced Ora King hot smoked salmon, BBQ brisket, roast lamb saddle, and pineapple upside down cake. .

NZ’s finest produce meets Bold Asian Flavours AUCKLAND IS FILLED WITH RESTAURANTS THAT SHOWCASE THE INCREDIBLE CUISINE ON OFFER, AND POCKETS OF EATERIES NEAR THE CBD HAVE GARNERED FAME.
T
he Viaduct, Ponsonby and Britomart, to name a few. However, it takes a rare and particular restaurant to tempt diners to the suburbs. Big Fish Eatery has tourists and locals alike flocking to Penrose and Stonefields to taste their wares. Serving up a modern take of Pan-Asian cuisine, Big Fish Eatery draws a range of Asian flavours and dishes, all with a distinct Kiwi twist. While the menu is clearly inspired by bold Asian flavours, the produce is as New Zealand as it gets. Big Fish Eatery focuses on serving up the best of this country’s produce, and treats it with the skill and finesse required. The menu includes bluefin tuna and Big Fish Eatery is one of the very few Auckland restaurants serving up this rare and delicious fish. Also on the menu is blue cod and Mt Cook salmon, which
“Each dish is paired perfectly with a unique sauce, handmade inhouse and, of course, made fresh.”
is freshwater salmon free of vaccines, pesticides or antibiotics due to the purity of the environment. It’s no wonder that their sushi is award winning and their sashimi is consistently not only fresh but also high-grade quality and world-class. Of course, it is not just the seafood that has pushed this restaurant into fame. Both the lamb and beef are New Zealand reared with only the best cuts of meat used. Beef eye fillet in the stir frys, and French cutlet lamb all cooked a perfect medium-rare. Big Fish Eatery not only source the best produce but they also deliver it to you in it’s best form. The restaurant goes out of it’s way to create as much as they can in-house and if not, source from independent providers of organic food. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the gluten-free, organic noodles, made especially for Big Fish Eatery by their supplier. Each dish is paired perfectly with a unique sauce, handmade in-house and, of course, made fresh. Big Fish Eatery quickly gained a reputation for showcasing New Zealand’s best produce with fearless Pan Asian flavours. Only downside? Every single dish is prepared daily so once it’s sold out, you’ll have to come back tomorrow. If Big Fish Eatery’s popularity is anything to go by, it’s certainly worth it.

All you need is love and proper pizza STUART DEEKS BRINGS GLOBAL PIZZERIA TO NEW ZEALAND
E
ntrepreneur Stuart Deeks is now the CEO of Proper Pizza Group for Australia and New Zealand. With perseverance and passion he has established a flagship store in Central Auckland and is thrilled about the prospects and challenges of growing and creating a new brand. Persistence paid off when Deeks did this previously with his brother Lewis in 2002 when they brought the Esquires coffee shop franchise to New Zealand. Esquires grew from a single store into a listed entity in twelve countries so he is replicating his experience and success with Proper Pizza. “I was specifically looking for an amazing quality product in a high growth sector which I could wrap my franchising experience and entrepreneurial skills around. “I found the best pizza product I’ve ever tasted in Proper and look forward to growing the company throughout New Zealand, then

globally by engaging franchisees who want to share in the opportunity as it fits the gap perfectly, says Deeks. Proper is a Gourmet Pizza brand in Albania where Deek’s fiancÊe hails from. After introducing him to the pizza and when he tasted how good it was they both realised the real opportunity to introduce it here in New Zealand. The product sits at the top end of the branded pizza sector and due to a thin sesame crust giving a unique taste it has a real point of difference with customers. The pizzas are not oily and Proper offers glutenfree and vegan choices with the recipes and branding harking back to their European origins. Proper Pizza will be open seven days from 11:30am till 3am with a marvellous selection of gourmet pizzas. Gourmet Pizza is a high growth sector and has the potential to be scaled exponentially. Most importantly the pizza is the best Deeks has ever tried anywhere in the world. At Proper Pizza they believe in always doing things the proper way and is there anything more proper than Proper Pizza.

Talking Wine & Cheese with New World Eastridge WHETHER IT IS PUTTING TOGETHER THE PERFECT PRE-DINNER PLATTER OR JUST ENJOYING SOME CHEESE AND CRACKERS AT A PICNIC, CHEESE AND SUMMER ARE THE PERFECT MIX.
H
or brie?
owever, the supermarket deli can be daunting, with all types of cheeses represented. We spoke with the team at New World Eastridge to help us answer an age-old question - camembert
Camembert or Brie? Both soft types of cheese, traditionally made from cow’s milk, camembert and brie are similar in look and often used in the same way. Nevertheless, there are differences between the two that may help guide you in your shopping endeavours. Firstly, the production process varies. Brie has cream added to it whereas camembert does not, giving brie a higher milk fat content. This also gives brie a creamier taste and texture. Traditionally, the size of the moulds is also different which is why camembert may be offered in a full wheel and brie as a wedge of the larger full-size. At first, the taste can appear to be almost identical. Both can be described as having an earthy, nutty and almost mushroom-like flavour. In camembert, this is heightened and deeper while brie, on the other hand, also has a creamy, buttery taste with a salty finish.

Make sure to ask the friendly New World Eastridge team if you are in store and cannot decide which cheese to choose for a certain occasion. They are on hand to assist with any cheese queries! New World Eastridge’s Wine Club If you are in the store buying cheese for a summer snack, it is hard to look past a beautiful bottle of wine for the perfect pairing. New World Eastridge not only has a wide range of handpicked wines but are developing a Wine Club which will launch early 2019. Rohit Girijadharan, New World Eastridge, Liquor and SAP Manager What is your favourite thing about your department? I have developed a love of wine, and my wife and I had an opportunity to come and work in one of the best countries in the world for wine production – she too works in the industry. I love the wine range here at New World Eastridge, which keeps me on my toes in terms of keeping the shelves full and the range relevant to what our customers want.
able to offer a range and a promotional plan that means our customers are getting the best in show. What is your top tip for a summer’s day out? Apply sunscreen lotion, sport UV glasses and light-hued attire. Jordan Ishigaki, New World Eastridge, Deli Manager What is your favourite thing about your department? I love how quickly things move and the fact that you need to be on top of your game to keep things fresh for our customers. We also get to negotiate with suppliers to get better deals - nothing quite beats the thrill of the chase!
What are your three favourite items in stock in your department right now? If you are into your cider, nothing quite comes close to Zeffer’s Crisp Apple Cider (available in a flagon or can). Garage Project’s Garagista is a crowd favourite when it comes to craft beer, and is packaged beautifully. My favourite wine right now would have to be the Los Pasos Malbec, which I am sure many of you have not tried but you should check out our International Wine section for some amazing wines. What are your favourite summer’s drink and dish? A Monteith’s Red IPA coupled with a freshly prepared lamb salad. What do you like about working at New World Eastridge? There is a non-stop learning culture here at New World Eastridge. I love to challenge the status quo by questioning why we do things and challenging myself to offer something different or finding a better way to do things. We have such amazing support from our supplier’s which means we are
What are your three favourite items in stock in your department right now? My three favourite products in the department would be the Le Rustique Brie, Freshly Sliced Prosciutto di Parma and our made in-store Chicken Fat Potatoes. The brie is very creamy and has a stronger flavour to other bries, which I enjoy a lot. The prosciutto is amazing especially when freshly sliced – this can be cut to the thickness that you prefer. Our chicken fat potatoes are to die for with a crispy outside and the chicken fat that gives the potatoes a full flavour. What are your favourite summer’s drink and dish? Nothing more refreshing than a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and as for my favourite summer dish, freshly caught snapper carpaccio. What do you like about working at New World Eastridge? The atmosphere within the store makes it a great place to work, the way all our staff members treat each other like family and the encounters with regular customers make every day a good one at Eastridge! What is your top tip for a summer’s day out? My top tip for summer would be to just make the most of it, get out there and enjoy the amazing New Zealand summer.

A Pinot Noir Inspired by Adventurers
CENTRAL OTAGO’S MOUNT MICHAEL WINES HAVE BEEN MAKING AWARDWINNING PINOT NOIR FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES.
R
ather than rest on their laurels, the vineyard has launched an exciting range of affordable, artisan wines, under a new label – ‘The Mountaineer.’Hand-crafted by Mount Michael Wines Head Winemaker Jody Pagey, each wine produced for ‘The Mountaineer’ will offer excellent quality at an everyday price. In true Central Otago style, the debut vintage for ‘The Mountaineer’ is of course, a delicious Pinot Noir. This wine is inspired by the pioneering spirit and sense of adventure displayed by mountain climbers. Hard to miss is the picturesque label, which pays tribute to the beauty and grandeur of the New Zealand Southern Alps. The boutique producer makes under 2000 cases a year
and has been eager to create a collection that all New Zealanders can experience. “We have always taken the view that our wines should be enjoyed by all. Not just be positioned as an elite luxury. Weighing that up against the cost of production has meant our traditional collection hasn’t been affordable to everyone,” explains Jody. ‘The Mountaineer’ is made using Central Otago fruit, sourced from a single vineyard selected for its bright fruit and balance. This bold red is inspired by the quintessential New Zealand sense of adventure. This summer, celebrate and enjoy your own with this vibrant Pinot Noir.

Enjoy an endless summer at Dantes newest restaurant NEW ZEALAND SUMMER IS MORE THAN JUST A SEASON, IT’S A STATE OF MIND. MORNING SWIMS, LONG DAYS, STARRY NIGHTS AND BEACHSIDE BEERS, IT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN OUR DAY. 52
F
or most of us, sunny weather goes handin-hand with delicious food and long days enjoying the sunshine. Luckily, in Auckland, we are spoilt for choice over summer with many incredible options that make the most of our beautiful vistas. Moreover, we are lucky to have a true melting pot of restaurants on every corner with dishes from all over the world represented, from street food to haute cuisine. As the dining scene has grown, more and more people are choosing to eat out and becoming educated on different cuisines. As such, within all these restaurants, there is one aspect that foodies crave and which makes all the difference to the dining experience - authenticity. Dantes Pizzeria has this in spades. From the moment you walk through the door, the true Italian origin of every ingredient cannot be questioned. It was this high-quality that has made Dantes a household name for Aucklanders and an awardwinning eatery, including the winner of best of Auckland four years in a row and best in New Zealand for 2015 and 2016, by Metro Magazine. However, it did not stop there, with Dantes also adding pasta to the menu, boldly staking their reputation on this addition and challenging diners to opt for a pasta instead of pizza. The pizza at Dantes is well known for its authentic flavour. It is made with Caputo flour from Napoli, tomato San Marzano, mozzarella cheese from Campana and baked in a wood-fired oven had made in Napoli by Gianni Acunto, the master of the craft. Additionally, Dantes is the only New Zealand pizzeria with Vera Pizza Napoletana accreditation. This dedication to the culinary arts was also taken into consideration when pasta was added to the menu. The same attention to detail is apparent in each dish with authentic ingredients used where possible to create pasta that simply cannot be found anywhere else in the country. A slice of Italy outside of Italy, Dantes has continued to grow and make its mark on Auckland’s competitive dining scene. Of course, for a true dining experience, it is not just about the food. Dantes considers every detail and the location is one of them. Whether it’s a luxe food court or beachside, the Dantes experience starts inward with a restaurant fit out to invoke the senses to the location itself, carefully chosen to reflect their values. Since it’s launch 13 years ago, Dantes has moved from its original home in Kumeu when it was handpicked for Ponsonby Central. After much success there, the team have added Takapuna’s
Fortieth & Hurstmere and CBD’s Queen’s Rise to their portfolio, carefully ensuring the environment is one of a relaxed easiness with no expense spared to make this happen. In line with this philosophy, their newest restaurant is located in Auckland’s Browns Bay, well-known for its beautiful beaches and vast views of Rangitoto. Dantes Browns Bay not only serves the mouth-watering food they are known for but also is surrounded by the endless sea views that the North Shore is famous for. The gorgeous location is mirrored by the open kitchen, setting a relaxed tone inside complemented by the friendly customer service. Enjoy a Peroni by the beach or a late afternoon Italian coffee as you indulge in Dantes award-winning, fresh pizza and pasta in this stunning location. Summer may not be endless, but the long days will feel as though they are. With a slice of pizza in one hand and Peroni in the other, what more could you ask for?

‘If it’s important to you, it’s important to us’
F
WHETHER IT’S THE BAND YOU LIKE OR THE EVENTS THIS COMPANY HAVE PUT ON THAT YOU MAY HAVE ATTENDED, ‘NINETY-NINE REASONS’ ARE THE HOTTEST EVENT COMPANY IN TOWN! rances Mahoney aka Frankie and her specialist team, deliver high end events on small and large scales. We spoke to Frankie on why her event management company is different to others.
What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job would be that incredible moment when a guest walks in and their first response is an intake of breath or a “wow”! My motto is, ‘if it’s important to you, it’s important to us”. That is something I take with me on every event and love to deliver to get those “wow” moments from our clients. Tell us a bit about Ninety-Nine Reasons. We believe in storytelling and taking people on a journey with a lasting experience and that’s exactly what you need when launching a new product to market or planning your wedding or delivering end of year financials, from corporate, to private, to partnership, we can do everything from design to delivery. We work closely with you at every stage, we want you to think of us like an agency of all the moving parts but without the agency fee or an over-engineered feeling. We like it the Kiwi way, listening, watching, asking, challenging and delivering. Sometimes people have crazy ideas and think that you need to throw everything at an event....you really don’t. A good
event is about the experience, good service, fabulous food, great wine, and good company. What have been some of your favourite events to be a part of? Coming from a Hospitality background I really enjoy being involved in that industry. So having the opportunity to deliver outstanding events for The Lewisham Awards, The Nourish Group, Liquorland, Rockburn Wines and of course the highlight this year had to be working alongside the Panic PR team to deliver the Everdure by Heston Blumenthal launch at Kauri Bay Boomrock. Frankies team have such a broad portfolio of experience from eco-systems to hospitality, corporate and agency experience, to supplier and retail knowledge. Comprehensive service with an honest, real, authentic touch. This personal vibe comes from the top down and Frankie knows good service after running the Air New Zealand lounge, creating events for Westpac NZ and managing one of the most iconic NZ bars, Deschlers. Its always about the people Frankie tells me ”When you get to know your clients and you invest in them, you will understand what they need out of their event and then can deliver, it’s all about the people.”

Colourful, controversial and contemporary IT’S ALL GO AT THE MUSEUM! THE DOMAIN IS WHERE IT’S AT THIS SUMMER BREAK. THE STUNNING ‘SECRET WORLD OF BUTTERFLIES’ EXHIBITION HAS CAUSED AN ABSOLUTE ‘FLUTTER’ AMONGST PATRONS.
T
his enchanting and colourful collection boasts thousands of butterfly species for the first time on show from the Shannon Collection. It’s family friendly and interactive and includes a digital garden. This is perfect for nature lovers and young explorers but note it does finish February 17th which will be upon us in no time, so don’t miss out! Also, still on show, is the ‘Are we there yet?’ exhibition. Celebrating 125 years of suffrage in New Zealand, this contemporary exhibition utilises this anniversary to examine the progress and hurdles of gender equality and where to next! This is a great way to start conversations and address social questions within families and cultures new to New Zealand. Probably the most talked about though is the ‘160 years of Kiingitanga’ exhibition. Not only ground-breaking but also controversial, a wonderful first- time
look at the private collection of Kiingi Tuuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, the present Maaori King. Held in the Maori court, the sharing of this rare collection of taonga (treasures) is hoped to “create a deeper understanding of the shared history and contribution of the Kiingitanga on Auckland”. While you are there, check out the ‘Not one more acre’ exhibition which marks the 40th anniversary of the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei eviction from Bastion Point (Takaparawhā) This 506-day protest became a key symbol of the Maori land rights struggle. Important imagery and stories document the 1978 Crown sale crisis. For those with a great eye for art, the New Zealand Studio Glass in the eastern corridor has a small selection of artworks showcasing the skills and techniques of leading New Zealand Glass artists. Arranged by colour, this eye-popping display includes work by Mel Simpson, founder of the New Zealand society of artists in glass. To local Aucklanders, Museum entry is free and currently all of the exhibitions are free to all visitors. To find out more information and plan your visit, go to aucklandmuseum.com where you can see what’s on, when and where, the café hours to plan lunch around your day at the museum and even check out the little shop in the Museum Store to help remember your magical day!

Eat, Drink and BE LOCAL
IN TODAY’S LIFESTYLE WE ARE SEEING AN INCREASED AWARENESS IN THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING AND SOURCING FOOD LOCALLY. IN 2017 A CONSUMER NEW ZEALAND SURVEY SHOWED THAT 71% OF NEW ZEALANDERS WANT TO KNOW WHERE THEIR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES COME FROM, WHILST 70% WANT TO BUY NEW ZEALAND-GROWN.
O
ur Executive Chef Will, of the Grille and Eichardts, understands that our guests want to experience New Zealand and its fresh organic flavours in each dish. Taking inspiration from our local producers and farmers to create dishes that are on the pulse, in sync with the local produce and communicating the language of the land. “There are two main reasons I like to eat locally. The first is quality – too often produce is either picked too early to survive long journeys to its point of sale, or stored too long. By buying straight from local suppliers you’re getting produce that hasn’t been bashed around on planes, trains and trucks, nor stored in inert gases, nor picked a fortnight before ripening. That extra time on the tree, vine or bush during ripening adds a lot of extra flavour. The second is satisfaction. I enjoy a meal much more when I know where everything came from. I’ve met all my suppliers and visited most of the domestic ones. Hell, I drive past most of them at least once a week. I know the pig farmer plays the bagpipes to cheer them up on
rainy days. I know my berry guy won’t let anyone drive at more than 5kmph through his property to avoid getting dust on the berries. I know the lady who grows our saffron in Alexandra; a microclimate often fiercely hot, and surrounded by wild thyme. All this increases my respect for our ingredients and so my enjoyment of them. Local produce is more enjoyable to work with, to serve, and to eat.” So when you aren’t eating at Eichardt’s or if you are cooking at home, how can you be more of a conscious eater wherever you are? We have some top tips for you: • Get to know your local produce; knowing what’s in season means that you are always eating fresh – eating fresh means more nutrients. • Buy from local farmers markets rather than supermarkets; another huge bonus here is saving on plastic use, as most farmers markets are plastic-free. • Grow your own! To feed the predicted 9 billion people in the world in 2050, the world will need to produce 70-100% more food. If you already have land, you can make a difference and start by growing your own produce; encourage and even trade with your neighbours!

The Britten Stables THE BRITTEN STABLES HAS A PHENOMENALLY RICH HISTORY. A HISTORY WHICH OWNERS, ISABELLE AND TIM, ARE DEDICATED TO SHARING WITH GUESTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO SEEK AN EXPERIENCE THAT IS COMPLETELY UNIQUE.
P
assionate travellers themselves, they came to realise that the home Isabelle grew up in (which her late father and renowned Inventor, John Britten, personally built decades earlier) had more to offer than most luxury boutique hotels and event venues around the world. So, when the opportunity presented itself after the Canterbury earthquakes in 2011, Tim and Isabelle undertook the enormous task of rebuilding the 930sqm historic dwelling, formerly a horse stables for the near by Mona Vale Gardens and following that, the birth place of the world-recordsetting Britten V1000 motorcycle designed and built in the garage by Isabelle’s late father, John Britten. They restored the original charm of The Britten Stables and transformed it into the exquisite boutique luxury B&B that it is today. It is with immense pride that they welcome you to experience it first hand. They offer a number of luxury spaces with varying levels of privacy to suit your needs. Whether you are visiting for business, family vacation, honeymoon or simply to discover this exquisite part of the world, they have a space to welcome you. They also have stunning purpose built spaces (both indoor and outdoor) perfect for wedding group accomodation, family reunions and retreats. I’ll take you on an Escapade! 60 MINUTES. 8X8 METRE ROOM. NOTHING BUT YOUR WITS. COULD YOU ESCAPE?
E
scapade NZ, located on Victoria St East, physically locks you in a room—and you need to solve the tricky clues and puzzles to get out. Eye Magazine was invited along to try to escape! Built to test your mind, your teamworking skills, your creativity, your intuition and logical thinking, Escapadenz.co.nz has created a real-life Sherlock Holmes environment. It’s a perfect place to immerse yourself in the challenge offering: fun with friends and family, teambuilding, mind training and corporate event activities. Escapade co-owners, Jayne Lusk and Helen Whittle, heard about the global phenomenon of live escape games four years ago, and quickly saw the opportunity. To create their first brainteasing escape rooms, Escapade worked with two Australian psychologists. Now, the business creates all their own rooms inhouse—and they’ve hosted more than 50,000 people over just three years. You’ve got the choice of five different game rooms at Escapade, each with a distinct theme and mystery to solve. Once the room door is locked
66
behind you, you need to rely on your wits, problem solving and street smarts to escape. The layout of the room puts the onus on great communication and sharing what you see in the room with your teammates. The level of detail in the themed game rooms is exceptional. Mathematical equations, brainteasers, drawing, puzzles and games all create clues or unlock the next step and a pace develops. The time flies! While we were playing for fun, I could immediately see the huge potential for businesses and other teams. Not surprisingly teams like the NZ Women’s Black Sticks, All Black Sevens, and Blues rugby have all been through. One All Black even played three different Escapade games in a week last year! I highly recommend these thrilling games for anyone wanting to try something ‘out-of-thebox’ with friends, or for a staff party or a learning and development event. Escapade is crazy and wonderful all at the same time. So, here’s the challenge: the average escape time is 58 minutes. Could you do it faster?

A Bali State Of Mind BALI. THE INDONESIAN ISLAND HAS BECOME MORE THAN JUST A HOLIDAY DESTINATION, JUST THE MENTION CONJURES UP A CERTAIN STATE OF MIND - WHITE SAND BEACHES, COCKTAILS AND LOCAL MARKETS AND RESTAURANTS SERVING EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR, YOGA RETREATS AND ANCIENT TEMPLES.

B
ali has designed itself to be an ever-changing island to suit all needs. Those seeking ultimate luxury, backpackers on a budget, twentysomethings after a good party, family-friendly resorts and activities. Everything is designed to please. However, when an entire industry is built upon what vendors believe tourists want, the result can be a cheap, plastic version of what entrepreneuring individuals think people want from the Islands of the Gods. This, in many ways, is Kuta. Narrow streets lined with stalls selling Gucci knockoffs and crochet bikinis, the same bags, the same jewellery and the same constant calls of “transport?” “massage?” wherever you walk. For anyone looking to see the impact of tourism in Bali, visit Kuta and Seminyak. You can’t stroll along the beach without coming across plastic straws, bottles and various other litter. There is one moment in the day that makes everyone on Kuta Beach stop - golden hour and the stunning Bali sunset. The perfect orange orb sun quite literally melts into the coastline and the sky lights up in shades of purple and orange before revealing a beautiful starry night sky. With plenty of bars with bean bags offering cocktails and
delicious food, it’s easy to relax and enjoy the view. It took me awhile to find this beauty in these narrow lanes and over-commercialisation but it was there, in the kindness of the people and the beauty of the sunset. Kuta was made to please others and as a result, is not for everyone. Venture a little further and you’ll reach the beautiful shores of Seminyak and Canggu. Stunning beaches, lined with luxe eateries on the beach to relaxed beach bars for the price conscious. Water sports are easily available if you get bored lying on the white sand beaches and enjoying the fresh, blue waves. Heading out of the beach, both areas have a range of shops, market stalls, bars and restaurants to serve up whatever you need. Branded clothes or faux branded bags, full body massages and facials for a fraction of the price, it’s easy to live a life of luxury even on a budget when in Bali. For a slightly greener view, there’s always the popular spot in the middle of Bali - Ubud. Set amidst the jungle, Ubud is surrounded by nature but is also surrounded by someone constantly wanting to sell you something. Tourism is clearly what drives the economy here and even in low season, the famous Ubud market was filled with tourists from all over the world. However, it’s easy to see why, with the abundance of temples and attractions - the Neka Art Museum, Goa Gajah (also known as the Elephant Cave), the Holy Spring Temple and the popular Sacred Monkey Forest. A trip to Bali isn’t complete without at least one day in Ubud which cannot be done without a personal taxi driver. Unfortunately, Bali doesn’t have much (if any) of a public transport system which means that any short or long-haul transport requires a taxi. They aren’t as dear as you may expect but still bargain to what you think is appropriate and tip your driver if they have been particularly helpful. Your hotel will be able to source a driver for you and if not, you will find many a willing driver offering “taxi?” to you no matter
where you are. In fact, it is more accurate to say there is always someone offering you something no matter where you are! While it may seem to be exhausting to constantly be saying “no thank you” as you walk down the street, the kindness of the people doesn’t make it so. Across the small island, everyone you meet is kind, helpful and yes, trying to find some work but are quick to move on the next tourist once you politely decline. If you do decide on a taxi or a round cane bag, haggling is encouraged in Bali. Nevertheless, I do implore you not to take this too far. Many of the prices offered are fair, or a little above what you would be willing to pay in New Zealand or Australia. Think of what value you put on a product or service and remember that this is someone’s livelihood before relentlessly pushing the price down. The negative impacts of tourism are all too clear to see in Bali and many aspects will not live up the island paradise promised in movies, magazines and other media. However, seek the beauty not only in the stunning rice terraces or beautiful beaches but also embrace the traffic, crowds and repetitive nature of the market stalls. And if you still can’t quite learn to love it, head to the beach and watch the sky light up as the world stops every night. With the right company and a cocktail in hand, that experience alone is worth the trip.
