taying well over winter is a challenge for many of us but one of the biggest health issues facing New Zealanders is gut health. Gut health is critical to your overall health and of late, gut healing treatments are all over social media. I have just finished a 30 day gut healing treatment called ‘Putting Health at the Top’ and not only did it make me feel great, sleep better and lose 5kg but it also gave me a better overall immune system enhancing my health. See pages 32 to 38 for our new Gluten-Free section. In August we support the Coeliac Foundation with the ‘Going Glam for Gluten Free’ Ball at the Stamford Plaza. Hope to see some of you there where you will dine on delicious coeliac cuisine and go home with lots of new goodies to taste! Another ambassador for good health is Simon Gault, who has been on a journey with his own health and has come out the other end as a delightful ray of sunshine and now spends his days serving and promoting good health. He features on our cover as the Mad Hatter showcasing some of the homegrown vegetables that he serves in his restaurant Giraffe. We know you are going to love everything on his menu. Parnell has laid down the challenge again to all Auckland waiters and this year the restaurant wins a Renault car for a year and the waiter wins an overseas trip! Check pages 12 and 13 for dates and details, make sure you tell your favourite restaurant to enter and come and support them on the day at La Cigale markets. My winter health tips for you, sleep a lot, burn ‘On Guard’ Doterra oil in a diffuser, eat lots of garlic, lemons and vegetables, a ton of olive oil and the occasional great red wine.

New treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin What is Belkyra? Belkyra is a new non-surgical treatment option to reduce a “double chin” or fat pad under the chin. It is produced by a pharmaceutical company (Allergan) and has now been approved by MedSafe NZ for the removal of “submental fullness”. It is also available in USA, Canada, Australia and parts of Europe. What exactly is it and how does it work? Belkyra contains a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid. This acid occurs naturally in our bodies and breaks down our dietary fat. When Belkyra is injected into fat cells under the chin it permanently breaks them down in the same way we break down fat cells in our food. The fat is then excreted in the normal way. What does the treatment involve? It will take at least 2 or 3 treatments to see an improvement (6 to 8 weeks apart) and some people need up to 6 treatments. Each treatment session involves multiple injections into the fat pad. Can I go straight back to work after a treatment? Unfortunately this can’t be regarded as a “lunch time” procedure like Botox. There is a significant amount of swelling over the following few days and this may persist for several weeks. Other common side effects include pain, nodules and bruising. Will the fat cells come back? The number of fat cells we have in our bodies is set early on, during puberty. Once those fat cells have been destroyed they are gone for good. However if you were to gain a lot of weight any remaining fat cells may become larger.

Newmarket’s Newest Beauty Clinic

O

WALKING INTO COSLAB, THE OPEN NATURE OF THE SPACE, AND OF THE STAFF, IS IMMEDIATELY APPARENT. THE IMPECCABLY DESIGNED CLINIC IS BETTER DESCRIBED AS A MODERN LOOKING HOME, WITH STRIKING FURNITURE MATCHED WITH BEAUTIFUL CHERRY BLOSSOMS.

wner & Founder Michelle explains the concept behind the new Newmarket clinic. “I have sensitive skin,” explains Nutritionist Michelle, “and I struggled to find treatments and skincare that not only worked but my skin did not react to.” After being unable to find the expertise, care, and quality she wanted, Michelle started CosLab. All the staff are experts, and they offer select treatments, that the team can profess to be highly skilled at. CosLab is a medical beauty center that dedicates itself to providing a wide range of cosmetic treatments. In CosLab, Michelle and her team aim to provide an unprecedented skincare experience to their clients by using the latest treatment devices. The continuous development of cosmetic technology and efficient training combined with global equipment, ensure they provide their staff with all the tools to achieve this. This includes Venus Legacy, which is an advanced non-invasive medical device that effectively resolves challenging face and body aesthetic needs, such as nonsurgical body contouring, cellulite reduction, skin tightening, and wrinkle reduction. Treatments are comfortable with no downtime and safe for all skin types. Venus Legacy™ is powered by proprietary (MP)2 technology (a combination of Multi-Polar Radio Frequency and Pulsed

Electro Magnetic Fields) and features cutting-edge VariPulse™ technology. CosLab also lay claim to being New Zealand’s sole distributor of MT Metatron Skincare, an exclusive Japanese line that has gained popularity with women worldwide. Developed and made in Japan, the antiageing skincare penetrates deep into the layers of the skin to counterattack ageing signs from the dermis. “The benefit of using MT Metatron is that it works, for all types of skin tones and types, rather than just Western or Asian skin,” explains Michelle, who personally tried and tested the range before offering it at CosLab. CosLab boasts the latest in cutting edge technology, skincare and staff expertise. However, that is not the sole reason that keeps their clients coming back. “We want our customers to feel they can relax here, that CosLab is a place for them to simply stop, have some tea, and just relax whether they have an appointment or not,” says Michelle. “We want it to feel like home.”

The modern face of heart disease THE HEART FOUNDATION USES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY TO DISPEL MYTHS THAT HEART DISEASE IS AN ‘OLD MAN’S DISEASE’

22

H

Contrary to the myth that heart disease only affects the elderly, each one of these Kiwis is currently living with heart disease.

eart disease is on the rise according to the latest Ministry of Health NZ Health Survey, revealing a 10-year- high among those living with heart disease across all age groups, not just the older populations. Top cardiologist and Heart Foundation Medical Director Associate Professor Gerry Devlin, says there are now 186,000 people living with ischemic heart disease alone, while an increase among those between the ages of 35-44 has consistently been reported since 2011. “New Zealanders need to get out of the mind-set that heart disease only affects the elderly,” says Devlin. “While incidences of heart disease do increase as we get older, it is not uncommon today to see people presenting with significant heart problems in their forties and fifties. At times, even younger,” he says. “ With more age groups now being affected, research is needed more than ever to address the issue.”

“ With more age groups now being affected, research is needed more than ever to address the issue.” Assoc. Professor Gerry Devlin, Heart Foundation Medical Director

Celebrity heart survivors lend their support

Dame Jenny Shipley and Sir Richard Hadlee have stepped forward to support the Heart Foundation’s 50th Anniversary and its ongoing fundraising efforts, recently taking part in a photo shoot alongside other heart disease survivors of various ages, gender and ethnicity. Hadlee, who was diagnosed with Wolfe-ParkinsonWhite syndrome shortly after he retired, was shocked to learn that so many Kiwis are facing heart disease today. “I was amazed to meet a young man in his twenties who first had open heart-surgery when he was 15, another teenager that had a heart attack on the basketball court at the same age and a young mother with her six-year-old daughter, who both share the condition I was diagnosed with, WolfeParkinson-White syndrome,” he says. “This really highlighted to me that heart disease is an every-person’s disease, impacting most people in one way or another,” he says. “I became aware of my own heart condition when I was just 40 years old. I bowled my last ball in Test cricket on 9 July 1990 and on 9 July 1991, I had my surgery. “I feel lucky that I went on to make a strong recovery and continue to live an active and healthy life. But I don’t take that for granted and I believe the Heart Foundation’s significant investment into

research and specialist training for New Zealand cardiologists has had a major impact on successful cases like mine,” he says. Since experiencing a heart attack in 2000, Dame Jenny Shipley successfully manages her own heart condition, ensuring she can still juggle her busy life. “I attribute a lot of the exemplary care I have received to the Heart Foundation and the excellent work they do. But the fight against heart disease is far from over and they still need our support,” says Shipley, who has been a patron of the organisation for several years. Since the Heart Foundation began, it has invested more than $65 million into heart research, while specialist cardiac training is also funded. This is where cardiologists and researchers train overseas, and return to ensure New Zealanders receive the same world class care here. Devlin says that the Heart Foundation is the biggest independent funder of heart research in New Zealand. “In addition to training, we have funded some amazing research breakthroughs as a result of donor’s generosity and support,” he says, adding that there has been a 75% reduction in the death rate from heart disease since the Heart Foundation began its work. “But this doesn’t diminish the fact that heart disease is still our single biggest killer,” says Devlin. NAZANIN ‘NAZ’ KHANJANI It’s hard to deny that Naz completely stole the show on New Zealand’s second season of The Bachelor. Since then, New Zealanders have been captivated by the Persian beauty and this year, she graced our TV screens once more on Dancing With The Stars as she competed for her chosen charity, Make A Wish NZ. We sat down with Naz to find out all her favourite things.

Who is your fashion icon? I’m really into my fitness and so I am totally in love with my activewear. My favourite would have to be Brick City Villin. They’re an amazing company based in Australia. What’s your go-to winter fashion accessory? I would definitely say my black knee-high boots and scarf - these are my fave! What’s in your handbag? You’ll always find my phone in there haha! My makeup bag, bottle of water and snacks... I love food and I’m always hungry!

28

What perfume are you currently using? Red Door by Elizabeth Arden. My mum introduced this perfume to me when I was only 16 and I’ve been using it since. What’s the best advice to living a healthy life? The best advice I could give when it comes to fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is making sure you are smart with food choices. This is because regardless of how much you exercise, if your food intake isn’t the best, you won’t see results. In saying that, dont forget you only live once and it’s ok to treat yourself every now and then! Where’s your dream travel destination? I am definitely a warm weather girl and have always been fascinated by Greece so definitely the Greek Islands! Any last words? I hope it’s not too cold this winter as I’m still trying to get use to New Zealand weather having lived in Australia for 10 years!

TIPS FOR DRESSING

to survive the cold Vanessa Bennett Eye Magazine’s Editor

New Zealanders are blessed with an abundance of gorgeous Winter clothes and accessories. Faux fur, merino and other wools result in Winter being a fashion dream. However, it can be difficult to decide what pieces to invest in and how to create looks that are practical yet still have style. Vanessa Bennett, Eye Magazine’s Editor, has spent years perfecting this balance, she tells us her top tips for dressing in Winter. 1 Scarves must be good quality. They complete your outfit! 2 Another must a great pair of leather pants, they are warm and can be dressed to suit any occasion; casual or dressy. 3 It’s simple, a Ralph Lauren blazer my ultimate go to for the winter. 4 A faux fur, will keep you warm and stylish!

Talking Social Shopping with Monique Bradley

S

ocial Influencer, TV presenter and social shopping expert Monique Bradley combines her experience as a former host of a TV shopping channel and live stream expert, her professional training as a speaker, with her passion for sales. Through this, she is able to bring great products directly to people, via the new way to sell and to shop: Social Shopping. “The first thing I hear from clients is ‘Oh I wish I could say that like you did!’ and that’s really what I love to do most. I started professional voice training when I was just 8 years old and my expertise is in the art of engagement and authentic storytelling that excites people so they want to buy,” she explains. Social shopping is an e-commerce methodology in which the shopping experience is shared with a social network of friends and contacts. Social shopping impacts

an individual’s buying process by using social media networks to share, recommend, suggest and comment on products or services. The idea behind social shopping is that individuals are influenced by their friends purchases and recommendations. “My partner Pete Ward (co-owner of YourFixTV) saw me hosting at a live event with cameras present and he asked if the show was being broadcast or live streamed anywhere. It wasn’t, so he used his genius as a pioneer of online learning in NZ, his understanding of IT and his skills as a digital strategist and media mentor to build me a studio and a mobile live streaming unit to be able to take brands and businesses to the world,” she explains. Social Shopping is the next big thing in New Zealand for consumers, and we’re already there. With people such as Monique leading the way, we have no doubt in its success.

A

wedding is a deeply personal event and, at times, can be stressful. While at its core it is about the relationship between two people, it becomes just as much a day for family, bridesmaids, groomsmen and friends. Leading up to the big day, everyone has their own opinion of what is best. From how many bridesmaids to have, what shoes to wear, when to take the official photos, to how many speeches there should be. While it is important to listen to advice, both online, in magazines and from family and friends, it is not required that you take that advice. A wedding is about two people in love, and it is always important to listen to your gut, follow your instincts and make a decision that’s right for you. Whether than means 10 bridesmaids or none at all, remember, it is your day so have it your way.

The beautiful olive trees and just the feeling of being away from it all. It’s also a nice thought that, because there is a restaurant there, we can go back for anniversaries, so it’s more than just a venue on its own,” explains Emma. There are few things that trump the venue in terms of importance when planning a wedding but many will argue that the wedding dress is top of the list. Emma used internationally acclaimed designer Trish Peng

who created a beautiful bespoke gown. “I never ever wear white, so I was unsure how that was going to work” she laughs. “But I chose a beautiful geometric print, covered in exquisite sequins, which suited my style perfectly.” It fit her beautifully, falling effortlessly to the ground, and was complemented by the romantic styling of the venue. Three key stylists made this luxury wedding picture perfect. Centrepiece created the table settings and provided the finer touches to create a beautiful ambiance and boutique florist, Ruby & Blush Floral Couture provided the flowers for the tables, bouquets, buttonholes and made a jaw dropping circle of flowers for the ceremony. James and Emma used international stylist

Donna Balasoglou to bring everything together and create the perfect setting for their big day. “We had some amazing people who worked with us to create our dream wedding,” says Emma. “Donna Balasoglou in particular made it all happen. She cleverly used greenery to bring the outside in and her attention to detail just made it all look so beautiful.” The groom and his groomsmen arrived by INFLITE Helicopters while the bride and her bridesmaids arrived in style in three luxury Excalibur cars. Their arrival was captured by videographer and drone operator Reuben Fietje from Shoot Edit Video and expert wedding photographer Nadine Canestri. The wedding rings were made by Greg Holland Jewellery; they were handmade and designed specifically for Emma and James. “We totally loved the design of our rings and loved working with Greg,” said James. The bridal party was dressed to impress

with the bridesmaids in navy sequined gowns from Glamour Boutique and the groomsmen in morning suits by Frank Casey Newmarket. For James and Emma, the key to their wedding was ensuring it reflected their relationship and their personalities. Emma, who owns Boni & Beck online gift store and has a passion for design, created the menus, place cards and matchbox favours for their big day. When we asked Emma what advice she would give to other brides she replied, “Make sure your day is fun and reflects you. We had one of our closest friends Emma Davison (celebrant) marry us and she truly made us both feel comfortable on the day and made our ceremony how we had envisioned it. She worked together with us to make the feel of our ceremony unique and special to us. On the day we could not have been happier with the heartfelt words that she spoke.”

Love Storey

A WAIHEKE

THE FIRST TIME I MET JILL

I knew I had met my match.

I

was in a bar helping a mate get over a break up with a few beers and Jill’s best friend was visiting from Australia, and after a few minutes of yarning, I knew she was the one for me. Four years later and I can’t imagine my life without her. I love how much she pushes me to achieve and to chase my dreams. They say opposites attract, however, we are not opposites in the slightest. We are both animal lovers, love to have a laugh and definitely know how to party. On the day I planned to propose we were living on Waiheke Island and I had nearly left the ring on the ferry. I was anxiously awaiting a reply from Jill’s brother Jay, for her hand in marriage, as Jill’s father Alton, has passed away. Finally at midnight, I awoke to a ‘ding’ from my phone and sure enough her brother had given us his blessing. On the morning of Jill’s 30th birthday I took her to her favourite location on Waiheke Island, Onetangi Beach to take our three dogs for a morning walk. It was 4:30am, spitting lightly and I remember her walking in front of me telling me all about what she was going to wear to her 30th birthday celebrations that evening and all I could think was DO NOT DROP THE RING! Moments later, on one knee I asked my beautiful, now wife, to marry me, she said yes and the planning began! We had moved off the island but had fallen in love with Waiheke, which was why it was an easy decision for us to choose Waiheke Island for where we wanted to celebrate our nuptials with our closest friends and family. Jill planned the whole wedding herself: spreadsheets, meetings, decorations and more. Let me tell you a little story of our day … a love storey….

The Art of HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY

THESE DAYS, IT SEEMS EVERYTHING IS MASSPRODUCED. THIS HAS BEEN THE DRIVING FORCE OF OVER CONSUMERISM AS WE CONTINUE TO BUY AND THROWAWAY, MORE AND MORE. WHILE THIS ISN’T NECESSARILY A BAD THING AS IT’S BROUGHT PRICES DOWN, THERE ARE SOME INDUSTRIES THAT ARE COMPROMISING QUALITY FOR COST-EFFECTIVENESS.

T

he negative effects of mass production is incredibly apparent in the fine jewellery industry. For years, jewellery was handcrafted, expertly worked by a professional resulting in a unique and long lasting piece. Sutcliffe Jewellery is determined to keep this bespoke process alive, offering handmade pieces rather than mass produced or castmade options. Based in Auckland’s historic Parnell, Sutcliffe has a long history of uncompromising quality. Internationally acclaimed and recognised, Sutcliffe has gained itself a reputation of artisan craftsmanship thanks to it’s long local history. Awards aside, it is their impeccably high standards and passion for their craft that truly sets Sutcliffe apart. “Handmade jewellery uses a different alloy than cast jewellery, and this alloy is harder wearing,” explains Owner Brent Sutcliffe. “The metal gets “work hardened” as we beat it, bend it, file it and work it, and this means it will last much longer than a cast piece of jewellery.” However, it is about more than just the piece’s

50

longevity. For Brent and the team, it is the one of a kind nature of a handmade piece of jewellery that drives their passion for this craft, as no piece is the same. On the other hand, a piece of jewellery drawn up on a computer-aided design and cast is guaranteed to be used over and over making your ‘bespoke’ piece of jewellery not bespoke at all. “I like to think of it like a piece of art, you can have the original or a print. The original is so much more valuable, but it’s not just the value,” says Brent. “When its handmade there’s a lot of love and attention that goes into that special piece of jewellery. We see great value in that for our customers, as its unique, and personal to them and has had all the dedication that’s needed to produce a fine piece of jewellery, as opposed to a piece that’s been spat out by a computer.” Buying jewellery is a very special event and Sutcliffe endeavours to ensure customers enjoy the entire process, from the moment they walk through the door. After all, why buy a print when you can buy the original?

Yamaha WaveRunner GIVES A NEW THRILL TO JETSKI FISHING

52

The 2018 range of Yamaha WaveRunner jetskis are out now, and they are sure not to disappoint. Kirk Davis from The Jetski Fishing Show explains why he’s chosen the FX HO WaveRunner as his personal watercraft for fishing. “I have chosen it because it is the best ski for fishing on the market. The FXHO is stable, has excellent fuel economy, and loads of storage for all of the fishing and other gear,” he says. “The key to fishing well on a WaveRunner is to get out there and experience it! Fishing from the WaveRunner is incredibly easy, and until you have tried it you don’t realise how versatile it really is. It is so easy to launch and retrieve on your own, quick to get to the fishing spots and move around when you are there, and with such a small footprint on the water you can get nice and close to the fish without spooking them.” yamaha-motor.co.nz

Helping Pets Thrive with a Raw, Natural Diet MORE AND MORE, WE ARE ALTERING OUR DIETS TO INCLUDE RAW, NATURAL FOOD DUE TO THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING BENEFITS. BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR PETS? AMBER CORDERO AND JACQUELINE TAYLOR COULDN’T HELP BUT QUESTION THE PROCESSED FOOD THEIR BELOVED PETS WERE EATING, INSPIRING THE CREATION OF THE NATURAL PET FOOD COMPANY.

W

e wanted the right food to feed our pets and after seeing all the terrible ingredients put in our animals food, we decided to create a natural, delicious raw food, using human grade ingredients,” explains Jacqueline “No colours, no flavours, no nasties. We wanted to be 100% transparent with our customers using food we know will benefit the pet.” For pet owners, it is a responsibility to ensure they are well taken care of and diet is a key part of this. Their hair, their weight and even their stools are a reflection of a healthy, happy animal. How is the food made? The Natural Pet Food Company manufactures its products (WOOF and MEOW) in small batches in New Zealand with ethical, healthy ingredients. They support fair trade and local sourcing when choosing suppliers and farms across the country. Each of these ingredients have been chosen for their reputed healing, nourishing and beneficial effects on the body and skin, providing all the nutritional goodness that pets need at every life stage. Moreover, they combine the nutrition and taste of fresh, raw food and put it through a gentle freeze drying process which protects all the natural

58

enzymes and nutrients, so none of the wholesome goodness is cooked out. “The feed back has been incredible, not only do the animals love it but the owners are also seeing positive changes to their pets health! Animals who have suffered allergies have benefited from our Wild Brushtail Recipe which is a high quality protein that contains higher levels of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids than other red meats,” adds Jacqueline. Omega 3 and 6 have important anti-inflammatory effects and are

extremely beneficial in the management of allergies and inflammatory skin conditions. The food is especially suited for pets with allergies to common protein sources like chicken and beef. “We want our animals to not just live and survive, but to thrive,” she concludes. What more could a pet owner ask for?

Stitch and Bitch Lounge Café, there’s no place like it!

Unlike anything Parnell has ever seen, Stitch and Bitch Lounge Café manages to throw two things that normally wouldn’t be placed in the same sentence together “Artisan yarns and hearty German stews”…. But here is where you can now find both! Named after common social knitting groups that have been operating since at least World War II, the cafe-woolshop hybrid is run by Manu Loths who was born in the baroque city of Ludwigsburg in the southwestern, Swabian region of Germany and both the food and the coffee will transport you right back to her homeland with delicious hearty stews, soups, salads, German pastries and cakes. If you have a passion for delicious food, a warm and welcoming environment, and a love of knitting, Stitch and Bitch will be your new ‘home away from home’. SIMON GAULT:

Showcasing the best of NZ at Giraffe 11

SIMON GAULT IS A LEGEND IN NEW ZEALAND’S CULINARY SCENE. A CHEF AND RESTAURANTEUR, SIMON HAS WORKED BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY AT A VAST ARRAY OF ESTABLISHMENTS INCLUDING LEITHS RESTAURANT IN LONDON AND THE PRESTIGIOUS, MICHELIN-STARRED THORNBURY CASTLE.

H

e has also formally been the personal chef to the likes of billionaire Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and prior to that, personal chef to Simon Fuller. Simon is a global culinary superstar who has a remarkable talent for bringing together tastes and techniques from around the world. Aucklanders rejoiced when Simon returned to the city after a busy year travelling filming his television show and opened Giraffe, nestled in the Viaduct. Giraffe by Simon Gault is a celebration of everything that makes New Zealand great. Homegrown is front and centre, showcasing the finest local producers and growers our country has to offer. They do note, however, that occasionally, the very best ingredients are from further afield. The spirit of innovation is captured in the preparation and presentation of deliciousness from breakfast and lunch through to dinner and dessert. Simon and his team at Giraffe are uncompromising in their promise to surprise and delight every time, making every guest feel at home. We sat down with Simon to discuss the philosophy at Giraffe and his passion for bringing great yet healthy food to New Zealanders.

12

You have had a busy year travelling for filming. What are some of the cuisine secrets you learnt while doing so? I did pick up something in the Greek Islands that I have brought back to Giraffe and into my cooking. They are passionate about food and, in particular, olive oil which has been part of their cuisine for tens of thousands of years. The Mediterranean diet has wowed nutritionists for years with lower rates of heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. A staple in this diet is olive oil, with locals in the Greek Islands consuming about 25 L per year. And New Zealanders? We only consume approximately 200ml. Tell us some more about Giraffe. What is the philosophy of the food and the restaurant? We’re not fine dining but I have brought in components of fine dining that work well in this setting. Excellent customer service as well as a deconstructed Moroccan lamb pie served at the table. Served with mushroom, potato puree, peas and roasted carrots, it has been a popular dish.

Excellent produce is a key component of Giraffe. How do you ensure this? We source the very best ingredients from select producers and growers with the intention of building strong, long-term relationships with them. This means we know the origin of our ingredients. We know the people who are behind those ingredients and together we share in the same narrative of quality, pride and passion for the end-result. This is incredibly important and ensures that everything we serve is of excellent quality, be it a celery dish or a sirloin steak. What are some of the signature dishes at Giraffe? If you are dining with a large group, you cannot look past the Suckling Pig ($245). Served with a delicious Sherry Sauce it serves approximately six people and is the perfect dish for sharing. Many of our items are designed this way, encouraging an enjoyable dining experience for all. Our bespoke cocktails are also really popular and a perfect way to start your evening off. What message would you like to send to those who are yet to dine at Giraffe? I am passionate about great food and great people. Giraffe is a combination of both with a menu that has been designed to challenge and surprise (even for those that are familiar with my trademark Gault twist!). We invite you to come and try something new and feel at home with the ambience, service and food.

The beauty

of art

CR DESLEY SIMPSON

A

uckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is without doubt one of the leading cultural hubs of our great city. It is the one place where the aesthetic value of art and intrinsic beauty come together to surprise, delight, intrigue and quite often inspire us. As a building, it is a wonderful combination of grand old beauty and an award winning modern purpose extension – first established in 1888 as a part of the public Library. Today it is home to over 17,000 artworks and loan collections including major holdings of New Zealand historic, modern and contemporary art. Alongside outstanding works by Māori and Pacific artists, they represent significant international painting, sculpture and print collections. Art has been shown to foster critical thinking and social skills, attract talented people and help build a sense of community. In order to thrive, Auckland needs all of these things. The gallery plays a vital role as a hub for art, bringing together our uniquely diverse local communities whilst giving us all a lens on art forms from around the world. Last month I participated in an interactive workshop run by the Art Gallery where members of the public were encouraged to use recycled cardboard to create small model houses. In doing so they were encouraged to explore and discuss the importance of ‘home’. This showed many and varied interpretations of the cultural and social diversity that makes up our city. These contributions will now be joined together as a large, sculptural work of art and will take pride of place in the north atrium of the Art Gallery in September. Auckland Art Gallery offers everyone a varying perspective on art. Never has the proverb, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, rung so true. If you are not familiar with Auckland’s Art gallery or haven’t been through recently, I encourage you to spend some time exploring the beauty it holds – it’s free for Aucklanders. And for those of you, who like me are steadfast advocates, I might see you walking the gallery rooms one lazy Sunday afternoon soon. 14

T he Apartment THAT EYE ALTERED

ONCE YOU’VE SEEN ONE CITY APARTMENT, YOU HAVE ARGUABLY SEEN THEM ALL. AT EYE MAGAZINE, WE SOUGHT TO CHALLENGE THIS AND TAKE A MINIMAL AUCKLAND CITY APARTMENT FROM AVERAGE TO SPECTACULAR. THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, WITH THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED A HUGE SUCCESS.

A

small, white kitchen is common in these apartments but this has been replaced with impeccably designed high-end cabinetry and accompaniments and a spacious layout. Thanks to the expert eye of internationally acclaimed interior designer Mal Corboy, the design is modern, sophisticated and timeless. Design, Build, Join (DBJ), ensured this was followed through with high-quality cabinetry that boasts luxurious dark hues and contrasting brass metal accents. The highlight of the kitchen is undoubtedly the striking tiles that make up the splashback. Tile Warehouse are known for their luxury tiles and wide range of designs available, many of which have been imported from Europe. As such, they were the ideal choice for this project. The tiles used are BIZ-ART Sahara, which gives the kitchen a

18

luxury and glamour feel, completely lighting the space up. “When it came to tiles I knew nothing about them and it surprised me how many styles designs and options are on offer in New Zealand,” says Editor Vanessa Bennett. The Tile Warehouse was front of mind as it is a well known brand but I had always seen the word ‘warehouse’ as a cheaper option. I was so impressed by the service, advice and quality choices we had! A tile wall can change a room and give it texture, depth and warmth. My final word on tiles is “what a difference a tile makes - I would choose The Tile Warehouse and their tiles again in a flash.” Of course, what is a kitchen without the fittings? For this project, a range of high-end, luxurious appliances from NEFF were chosen. This included the NEFF cooktop (as pictured) and the NEFF Slide and Hide Oven - the top

oven featuring a microwave and grill, while the bottom oven door slides under the oven cavity for more room. The convenience and ease of use of the oven combination frees up time for entertaining guests rather than cooking. Additionally, there is a silent extractor and rangehood from Schweigen, one of the most efficient air manufacturers of silent range hoods and bathroom fans in the world and a stunning fully integrated fridge from Bosch, with ample storage space. Another key feature of the kitchen is the Caesarstone kitchen bench, cut and shaped by Architectural Stone. It blends seamlessly with the black sink and tap from Paterson, which also features a water purifier from Parex, providing instant access to hot and cold water. Even city apartments deserve a beautiful dining area and this project is no different. The table, plates and accessories are from

19

French Country and have been paired with Arthur Dining Chairs from David Shaw Furniture, who also created the bespoke ottoman sitting adjacent to the dining table. To create a slight Scandinavian feel an Icelandic Sheepskin from The Sheepskin Factory was placed atop of the ottoman. Mal chose light tan timber tiles from FortĂŠ Flooring to balance the contrasting colours from the kitchen to the dining area. For the living area, comfort is the name of the game, which features a David Shaw couch, ottoman and James Salmond coffee table all from David Shaw Furniture. The couch is decorated with a Snowshoe Hare Throw, Rabbit Fur and Mustard Cushions from Harrowset Hall and The Linen Store. At the advice of Mal and International Stylist Donna Balasoglou, mustard cushions were added to carry the theme of the brass accents from the kitchen into the lounge. The decor marries the light with the dark without taking away the luxe theme. Wallpaper from Aspiring Walls, a cowhide from Mooi, Possum Rugs and white flower tables from Matisse as well as a beautiful arrangement of faux flowers from Fabulous Faux Flowers. City apartments have a strange juxtaposition of luxury views and locations that are often paired with cheap fittings. Investing in quality and using experts at their trade changes this outcome. With a few alterations, even a drab city apartment can be made into something fabulous.

owever a new range of outdoor flooring from the UK offers a cost-effective solution to these woes, where maintenance is little to none and safety is increased . Introducing Millboard Decking, a premium decking range made in the UK, now exclusively distributed to New Zealand by Forté, New Zealand’s timber flooring specialists. No staining or finishing coatings required, no algae growth, slip and scratch resistant, and moulded from genuine timber planks which replicate the grain of a real timber deck. We were surprised to find out that Millboard is a premium composite which is woodfree. You’ll find that most composite decking is a combination of plastic with wood fibres, however Millboard is hand-moulded from natural timbers, using wood-free polyurethane combined with mineral stone. This creates the resin mineral board, that’s almost indistinguishable from real wood, and also offers year-round, superior performance in comparison to regular wooden decks. However decking is not all that Millboard can be used for, it can also be used as slip resistant decking around pools, exterior walls, planter boxes and more.

In addition to providing a superior decking solution, Millboard is easy to work with and can be sawn and cut with standard woodworking tools with no predrilling required. Millboard has been designed to offer a clean ‘lost head’ effect, which is where the unique Lastane™ surface comes into play, sealing itself back over the heads of the Millboards special Durafix® screws. Forté’s venture into outdoor flooring solutions also provides opportunities for a great, indoor-outdoor flow. The Auckland Showroom offers over 100 timber interior solutions for timber flooring and wall panelling, allowing you to match your desired Millboard decking colour to your interior timber floor, or opt for a stylish contrasting option. Gone is the need to continuously prepare and maintain our decks to prevent damage from New Zealand’s unpredictable and sometimes extreme weather. Forté, New Zealand’s exclusive distributor of Millboard Decking, has the solution and there’s no other like it on the market.

What it Means to be a Coeliac

WHEN YOU HEAR SOMEONE REQUEST ‘GLUTEN FREE FOOD,’ DON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY– ESPECIALLY IF YOU WORK IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY OR HAVE JUST INVITED SOMEONE FOR A MEAL. COELIAC DISEASE EFFECTS AN ESTIMATED 60,000 TO 70,000 NEW ZEALANDERS (1 IN 70), HOWEVER UP TO 80% OF THOSE ARE UNAWARE THEY HAVE THE CONDITION.

I

t is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the small intestine and is caused by a reaction to gluten – a protein found in grains especially wheat, barley and rye. Symptoms are diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, and/or steatorrhea which can go on for days. The tiny, finger-like projections which line the bowel (villi) become inflamed and flattened thus reducing the surface area of the bowel available for nutrient absorption. This can cause fatigue, weakness and lethargy, iron deficiency anaemia and/or other vitamin and mineral deficiencies, failure to thrive or delayed puberty in children, weight loss (although some people may gain weight), bone and joint pains, recurrent mouth ulcers and/or swelling of mouth or tongue, altered mental alertness and irritability, skin rashes and easy skin bruising.

A strict gluten free diet leads to small bowel healing, resolution of symptoms and a reduction in the long-term risk of these complications. Probiotics and/or prebiotics may help alleviate the severity of celiac disease. Probiotics have been shown to have anti-inflammatory potential, and according to a new research study, intestinal bacteria in celiac patients could influence inflammation to varying degrees. But grains and sugars are highly pro-inflammatory, and while probiotics are anti-inflammatory, they cannot cancel out the detrimental effects of a diet high in starchy carbs. Even with no obvious symptoms, damage to the small bowel can still occur if gluten is ingested. Everybody with coeliac disease should adhere to a strict gluten free diet. For life.

Gluten Free and One Of A Kind KNEADING DOUGH FROM THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING TO CATER TO THE MANY HUNGRY APPETITES THAT BRACE THEIR BAKERY CABINETS AND SCOUR THEIR MENU, IS CHRISTCHURCH’S ONE AND ONLY, COMPLETELY GLUTEN FREE BAKERY. INTRODUCING TGF (TOTALLY GLUTEN FREE) BAKERY.

P

reviously, TGF was located at Worcester Street, however like many centrally located buildings, the damage from the February 2011 Earthquake led to the relocation of the popular bakery. Fortunately, prior to the earthquake, owners of TGF had bought a bakery on Blenheim Road, thus allowing TGF to safely transfer to these new premises which acted as a back up and made a quick restart possible. Six years later, with Christchurch’s recovery and rebuilding well underway ,TGF relocated back to a more central location, 290b Colombo Street, in Sydenham to new spacious premises with easy parking and a great team serving the Beatnik blend of Underground Coffee, which is certified organic and free trade. Offering a variety of freshly baked gluten free cakes, breads, buns and savouries made from quality ingredients, as well as a variety of dairy free and vegan options, TGF ensures one will never be short of options to choose from.

Coeliac Awareness Week Helps Remove Stigma of Being Gluten-Free IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 65,000 NEW ZEALANDERS HAVE COELIAC DISEASE BUT 80 PER CENT ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY DO.

C

oeliac disease is a permanent autoimmune disorder that causes a reaction to dietary gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. It causes damage and inflammation in the small intestine meaning key nutrients cannot be absorbed properly. Gluten-free is now better understood as being more than a diet trend, due to the increasing number of people being diagnosed with coeliac disease and committing

to living coeliac safe, or ‘GF for life’. “People who need to be coeliac safe can often be seen as difficult to cook for, cater for or eat out with but that’s really not the case,” says Coeliac New Zealand General Manager, Dana Alexander. Coeliac New Zealand is now aiming to remove the stigma of being different for these people during its annual awareness week, from June 18 to 24.

60 ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 large Carrot, chopped Half a large Onion, chopped 1 stick of Celery, chopped 6 medium cloves Garlic 1tsp Lemon zest 1tsp Lime zest 1 tsp Orange zest 3 Bay leaves Half a stick of Lemongrass 3 Kaffir lime leaves Half teaspoon dried Basil 1 tbsp Turmeric Half tbsp Paprika

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat half of the olive oil to a shimmer in a large heatproof casserole dish, then add the carrot, onion, celery and garlic and sauté until golden brown. Add the zests, herbs and spices and half of the remaining oil and cook for a further 2 minutes. Stir in the orange juice, honey and water and cook slowly until the sauce has reduced by half. Heat the remaining olive oil in a large sauté pan and add the duck legs, skin-side down. Cook until golden, then turn and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the legs to the casserole dish and place in the oven for 1 – 1½hours or until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Carefully remove the legs from the casserole and place on an oven tray ready for reheating. Pour all the liquid from the casserole dish into a saucepan and reduce over a high heat until it reaches sauce consistency, skimming any excess fat from the top as it heats. Strain and discard the solids, setting aside the sauce for reheating.

2 litres of Orange juice 250ml Manuka honey 600ml Water 6 size 22 Duck legs

Olive bread mash In a small saucepan, warm through two thirds of the milk, then add the ciabatta and allow to soak for 2 minutes. Remove the soaked bread from the saucepan and set aside. Heat the olive oil and remaining milk in a separate saucepan until just about to boil. Remove from the heat and pour the mixture very slowly into the bread over a low heat, while stirring with a wooden spoon. Quickly heat the mashed potato and fold into the bread and milk mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Assembly Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the duck legs in the oven to heat through. Divide the olive bread mash between serving bowls and top each with a duck leg. Pour over the sauce and garnish with a wedge of fresh or pickled fruit.

The Roti Ice Cream Wrap The roti ice cream wrap continues Giapo’s impressive pedigree of worldfamous comfort foods translated into the language of ice cream. The brainchild of Giapo chef Amrit, the creation takes a beloved everyday food from her home town Bilga, India, retaining the traditional method of cooking the roti but then making a sharp turn - going on to incorporate the roti into a truly delectable dessert. The cold ice cream hits the warm roti and the whole thing is rolled up, adorned with toasted New Zealand nuts and served. A beautiful marriage of warm and cool, chewy and creamy. Another excellent idea from the innovative team at Giapo.

Bracu: olive oil and all the spoils

PICTURE THIS: YOU ARE SITTING IN A STYLISHLY LUXURIOUS KAURI VILLA, A GLASS OF FINE WINE IN HAND, A DELICIOUS ARRAY OF FRESH PRESSED OLIVE OILS AND HOMEMADE BREADS ON YOUR PLATE, LOOKING OUT OVER THE ROLLING HILLS OF A BEAUTIFUL OLIVE GROVE. DOESN’T THAT SOUND LIKE A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN?

W

ell, it turns out that heaven is a place on earth. And it’s only a forty-minute drive out of central Auckland! Nestled amongst the Bombay Hills, the Simunovich Olive Estate is home to a host of wonderful treats, including the award winning Bracu restaurant. Bracu, fine dining wonderland, takes its name from the Croatian island of Brac, where the Simunovich family first began growing olives. Generations later, they now have an expansive olive grove with over 30,000 olive trees that produce some of the best extra virgin olive oil in the country. These olives, rich in vitamins and antioxidants (as well as flavour!) also

42

make their way into the rejuvenating olive based skincare range. Is there anything they can’t do? Not many other restaurants boast their own Wine Library, complete with rows upon columns of good wine to suit every taste and budget. Let the friendly staff help you select a complimentary drop to go with your dégustation. And when they say dégustation, they’re not kidding around. Bracu offers an exquisite 7 course dégustation menu that includes decadent plates such as their marinated kingfish with creamy coconut, avocado, chili and coriander. The leek and potato soup with wild mushroom espuma is other- worldly. And if you’re a pork belly fan you will not

be able to resist the free range pork belly with apple, cabbage, pumpkin, sage and nashi pear. And we’re just getting started - they also have a beautiful à la carte menu. Whet your appetite with entrees like the peppered venison bistro fillet carpaccio with plum, horseradish and watercress, and then tuck into a main like the duck breast with beetroot, rainbow chard, buffalo cheese and cherries. Then top it all off with a little something from the sumptuous cheese and dessert menu, like the Manchego cheese made from sheep’s milk - from La Mancha, Spain. If you have a sweet tooth (or five, like me), you’ll love the caramelia chocolate mousse with peach, oat crumble and passion fruit sorbet. Head chef Logan Clark leads a kitchen of artists who create pieces pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. Produce from local farms is sought out to prepare the freshest cuisine possible. True to the Simunovich’s philosophy ‘estate to plate’, the estate garden provides much of the seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs for the menu. Bracu also offers a range of group menu options. After your meal, why not take a stroll through the olive groves. On a guided tour

of the olive estate you’ll be introduced to pruning and harvesting, and all the behind the scenes processes that make the olive oil so good. Not only that, but you’ll have your wee taste buds blown away with the award winning Simunovich olive oil tasting. Don’t forget to take home a bottle of their award winning extra virgin olive oil and a special edition Simunovich Olive Estate coffee table book to remember your experience by. And if you’re wondering where to have your wedding, there’s no need to keep wondering! Bracu have a number of exquisite wedding packages to suit different styles and pockets, and they all come with the Mediterranean reminiscent Simunovich Olive Estate as the backdrop. There are indoor, outdoor and even lakeside options. Of course, Bracu have an experienced team of talented chefs to cater for your special day. From canapés to set menus, they can cover a range of different dietary requirements and create a unique dining experience for you and your guests (but be warned...they might be distracted from the wedding by the amazing food!). Treat yourself or your partner to a sumptuous lunch, a dinner dégustation, a fascinating guided tour around the estate, or even an elegant wedding nestled amongst the golden Bombay Hills. Once you taste a slice of heaven you won’t look back.

Washington DC WHERE POLITICAL JUNKIES CAN GET THEIR FIX By Shane Te Pou

F

or certifiable political junkies like me, nowhere comes close to the United States when it comes to getting a fix. Even before the Oval Office was occupied by this current unquenchable bonfire of media attention, America´s brand of democracy has always produced the most compelling political storylines, not to mention cast of characters. Many countries can lay claim to histories overflowing with war, scandal, racial conflict, civil rights catastrophes and triumphs, assassinations, conspriacy and intrigue, but none has squeezed so much action into such a short timeframe as the United States of America. So if, like me, you have politics running through your veins, it is just impossible to look away. Especially these days. Fortunate enough to travel there frequently, I have become something of a pioneer in political tourism in the Age of Trump. There’s always been plenty to seek out for those of us looking to sate our political curiosity, but since November 2016, wherever you happen to be, whatever time of day or night, politics will find its way to you in America. It fizzes through the atmosphere. Jetlagged, I’ll often find myself in a DC diner at some ungodly hour. Maybe just me and a couple of shift workers. The waiters, invaiably migrants from Latin America, are friendly if brutally efficient, taking your order (from a menu the size of the Greymouth White Pages), making your food and having you out the door within minutes. But they let you take your time if you have nowhere better to be. Chatting with many of these workers over a midnight bagel in recent trips, politics comes up more effortlessly than the weather. They feel under siege from a government elected, in part at least, out of hostility directed explicitly at them. “Everything, it’s just too crazy,” they tell me, shaking their heads. Two words —an exasperated “Trump, man” — is the tune that has every head nodding along. If you only have a few days to spare during which to sate your American political curiosity, look no further than the Acela corridor, the train route that takes you from DC to New York City via Philadelphia. Domestic air travel is notoriously bad in the US anyway, and the Amtrak service is a far less stressful alternative — especially considering relatively short distances between major points on the east coast. It’s pretty reliable and cost-effective too. The whole ticketing and boarding process can feel a bit clunky to the smartphone generation, but to me that just adds to the old school charm of train travel. Facilities include free onboard Wi-Fi and a dining car (both a tad patchy). Starting in the capital, it is amazing how cheaply and easily you can see the best of what Washington DC has to offer. It really seriously its obligations as the national

capital to showcase American democracy to the nation and the world. The National Parks Service manages numerous public facilities and historic monuments throughout DC, all accessible at no cost. If you have the energy, you can walk to, from, and between Washington’s many political hotspots, from the US Capitol to the White House to the Lincoln Memorial. It is a surprisingly compact town, and Google Maps is a decent guide. But a good alternative, especially in the inhospitable winter months, are the Hop-on/Hop-off bus services that circle the city all day and into the evening. For a pretty modest outlay of around $30, these double-decker buses are an efficient way to tick off your must see list. Sometimes the tickets will extend to two days, which is what you will need at a minimum in DC. After visiting Washington’s iconic public institutions, you can’t miss the chance to experience the extraordinary offering of the Smithsonian institution, which runs multiple museums, galleries and research centres across the city. Quite remarkably given the quality of their various displays, access to Smithsonian run facilities is free of charge to all comers. Explore their website deeply, but for me the African-American Museum and National Portrait Gallery are particular highlights on the Smithsonian menu. (If this hasn’t exhausted your patience for sightseeing, I’d also suggest a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, adjacent to the National Mall). Access to Congress, the Supreme Court and the White House depends on a lot of variables so keep a close eye on their respective websites. Public tours are available, but they can feel rushed and highly rehearsed. You’re more likely to see Realpolitik in action by choosing bars and restaurants wisely. Politics, as they say, is show business for the less attractive. If you’re into that kind of thing, there is no shortage of celebrity spotting opportunities around town while Congress is in session. Not quite as much as Canberra, which plunges into a Pyongyang style darkness when Parliament isn’t sitting, but there’s no denying that Washington comes to life when its main cast of characters are in town. Here’s a handy guide for where to eat and drink in DC if you want to grab a sighting in their natural habitat of America’s power elite. Places to hang out and talk politics: Old Ebitt Grill -100 Meters from the White House –one of DC oldest saloons: https://ebbitt.com The Willard Hotel: Where Dr King wrote his I have a Dream Speech. La Petite Fourchette Arrives in Wynyard Quarter

WYNYARD QUARTER WELCOMES A NEW FRENCH ADDITION TO ITS RANKS: LA PETITE FOURCHETTE.

F

rom the minds behind La Fourchette and L’Assiette comes a new French pâtisserie situated underneath the area’s luxe apartments. Owners Romain and Natalie Le Gal have created a reputation for themselves in St Heliers (and Britomart) and are bringing their French delights to a new city local. Carefully looked over by French Chef Pâtissier, Vatthana Boulom, the pâtisserie team produces a range of delicious creations for the coming day. The pâtisseries offer a range of options, including their signature mouth-watering cakes and tarts along with savoury sandwiches, salads and quiches. And, of course, fresh coffee! These creations are also delivered to La Fourchette and L’Assiette every morning. Chef Vatthana is constantly innovating and adapting the delicacies on offer to make the most of the seasonal produce available in New Zealand. Moreover, along with the individual pâtisseries on offer, they are also able to produce larger gâteaux or tarts for that dinner party or special occasion. “While creating our pâtisserie range, I always keep two things in mind: authenticity and modernity,” says Chef Vatthana. “It is a success when I hear customers saying they are travelling to France with every bite they take - and that is when I know why I decided to become a chef.” This means that it’s difficult to order the wrong thing in this pâtisserie, with it’s range of French classics. The true point of difference is the dedication and determination to ensure everything is freshly baked and served as such. Everything on the menu is made daily by Chef Vatthana and his team who care about the quality of each item. Fans of La Fourchette and L’Assiette will be overjoyed to see a new opening in a growing, central location. And those who aren’t fans will quickly be converted after just one bite into one of their delicious cakes.

s i e f i L h t i w r e t t e b e n g a p m a h C “Too much of anything is bad, but too much champagne is just right,” F. Scott Ffitzgerald famously said. We couldn’t agree more, no matter the season. From movies to music videos, champagne has secured its place in our culture as the only drink of choice that exudes luxury and exclusivity. Not to be confused with sparkling wine, champagne can only be called as such if it is from Champagne, France, which is just outside of Paris. Further, champagne can only be made using chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier. Used to celebrate weddings, toast to success and acknowledge milestones, the beautiful bubbles of champagne are all part of the appeal as is the signature pop of the cork. A truly one of a kind drink, here some of our favourites...

Is Craftsmanship Making a Comeback?

IN TODAY’S CAPITALIST SOCIETY WE ARE DRIVEN TO BUY, PURCHASE AND CONSUME THE LATEST IN TECHNOLOGY, FOOD AND EVEN IN ALCOHOL. IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE MASS CONSUMPTION, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO ARTESIAN, HANDMADE AND HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTS.

B

ut what is it about craftsmanship that draws in these buyers? Rather than receiving consistent products and outcomes, they are after a sense of knowing how a product came to be. The process of making a garment or brewing a beer is now expected information that a company provides. This has been incredibly apparent over the last few years in the beverage industry with craft spirits and beer becoming part of the vernacular for most consumers. According to the ANZ 2017 Craft Beer Report, we are spoilt for choice with over 1600 unique beers in the New Zealand market. With the industry continuing to grow, craft beer has become more popular amongst the everyday man and woman and evolved its customer base from niche to mainstream. New Zealand beer fans have never been better served with a plethora of

options available not only at bars but even at our local supermarkets. This philosophy has gained popularity amongst many New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses. Wynyard Quarter’s Free House 16 Tun has embraced this ethos but is refusing to become a ‘Tied House’ by only stocking the products of just one brewery. Instead, 16 Tun are able to offer their customers the carefully crafted beers of independent brewers from all over the country. 16 Tun boasts over 80 different craft beers available through their beautifully designed taps or in their extensive selection of only the best New Zealand bottled craft beer. Craftsmanship has truly made a comeback - in fashion, in lifestyle, in cuisine, and in beer. Establishments such as 16 Tun allow these independent breweries to thrive whilst simultaneously offering their customers a wide range of options. So, next time you’re looking for a place for a decent drink, ditch your bottled ‘usual’ and try one of the craft beers at 16 Tun and support your local brewery. You may even find a new favourite.

A Night at Naumi

BY MITCHELL O’KANE - MOTORING WITH MITCH

I

arrived at Auckland Airport just past midnight from an international flight and despite this, Naumi Hotel had arranged a very easy, free and quick transport to their front door. It stood out from about 500m down the road with it’s more than adequate lighting welcoming guests. Once through

the door - note, it was now 1:00 am - I was greeted by friendly and approachable staff at the front desk. Checking in was a quick and easy process and my luxurious single room was just a short walk away. Once settled, I was able to take advantage of all the benefits Naumi offers, including room service, which I ordered almost immediately. This arrived promptly and met the standard of a fine restaurant. Waiting in the room was a personalised note welcoming me and wishing me a relaxing stay. The

room itself was ideal with more than enough space to spread out, from the large comfortable bed to the immaculate bathroom. It was fitted out with modern decor and user-friendly technology. The area itself was peaceful with not a sound to be heard at night. Having the option of a late check out, I did not rise until 9:45 am when I headed straight down for Naumi’s complimentary breakfast. This was the perfect way to start the day with the option of food cooked to order or enjoying what was spread out on the buffet. All the food was fresh, hot and cooked to perfection. Ordering a coffee to go, I explored more of the hotel and checked out the gym and pool area which were both clean, tidy and well-maintained. Once I left my room behind, checking out was an effortless and easy process. Travelling back to the airport there was a short wait for the transport so used the time to wander through the foyer area which it set up for absolute comfort with plenty to look at and read. In a nutshell, Naumi Hotel provides first class comfort with vibrant colours and exciting attractions (including a bird cage in reception). Moreover, the user-friendly technology, approachable yet professional staff and fine-dining topped off a peaceful and world-class stay.
