THIS ONE NEVER PASSED THE JUDY TEST Since he started making wine in 1958, Joe Babich has learnt a lot about what makes an easy drinking fine wine. But one of his measures is unique. To know if a new wine will really make the cut, he takes it home to his wife Judy. If that bottle stays on the kitchen bench unfinished, he’s got more work to do. Dante’s Pizzeria Gluten Tolerant Dough Since 2006 Dante’s Pizzeria have hand stretched their pizzas and used only a brick oven in the cooking process to seal in all the authentic Italian flavours. Dante’s are committed to the standard of excellence and were the first pizzeria in New Zealand to be recognized for making authentic Neapolitan Pizza. Unhappy with this commercialised ‘fast food’, faithful Neapolitan pizzaioli (pizza chefs) sought to preserve the authentic Neopolitan pizza. This method makes Dante’s pizzas suitable for gluten intolerant customers but the added antioxidants make it good for you too. It is indeed the pizza heaven for everyone!

“As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” Ernest Hemmingway “A Moveable Feast”

Beirut A dining experience that is unique to New Zealand, Beirut brings together an extraordinary blend of ingredients and textures from the many cultures that make up the Middle East. From Lebanon and Israel right through to East Africa and Morocco, every dish is layered with flavour. Our chef’s hands make many of the key ingredients everyday. From scratch they make the Sujuk & Merguez Sausage, the dry aged Basturma Beef, the Labna Cured Yoghurt, the Bric Pastry, as well as freshly baking all the breads we serve, every morning. The restaurant is rough and beautiful in equal measures. Inspired by the city of Beirut in its 1970s heyday, when it was globally known as ‘the Paris of the East’, there is no other dining space like it in New Zealand. The Beirut Lane opens at 7am to serve a small range of exceptional takeaway breakfast dishes, strong Eight Thirty coffee, and a wide range of exotic teas. From midday, the bar overtakes the lane to support the full restaurant inside and to serve a unique range of botanically infused cocktails, handmade middle eastern shrubs and carefully curated international wines.

Ebisu From the menu

Ebisu takes the traditional values of Japanese cuisine – freshness, simplicity, painstaking attention to the quality of ingredients – and fused them with the buzz and excitement of contemporary dining. Occupying a historic building in Auckland’s Britomart precinct, Ebisu serves up contemporary Japanese fare. Ebisu draws on a combination of classic Japanese and European techniques to present an outstanding mix of new style sushi and sashimi as well as traditional Japanese dishes. In Japanese mythology, Ebisu is the god of daily food, good lucky and plenty. He is also the guardian of fishermen and merchants, making the restaurant’s location a fitting one. The stripped down design of Ebisu makes the most of the soaring ceilings, large arched windows, exposed brickwork and raw timber columns of the character space. A glassed off indoor terrace lets in light and views from Quay Street and creates an intimate space for group dining or events. Unusually on the Auckland dining scene, Ebisu also introduces live music and DJs into the restaurant, adding to the contemporary atmosphere. Ebisu has been honoured with many awards and accolades in its short lifespan and is sure to exceed your expectations.

IKA Seafood Bar & Grill ‘Ika’, pronounced ‘eeka’ has brought a unique approach to seafood dining to the Auckland scene, combining freshness with affordability. Chef Brendon Petersen selects fresh fish daily, serving much of it whole or as part of an ever-changing selection of small plates, stews and larger meals. Brendon was one of the eight chefs chosen to cook for President Nelson Mandela and special guests at his Robben Island inauguration celebrations and it’s easy to see why he’s so highly rated. NZ grass fed, aged meat is grilled to perfection; free range pork and chicken is also available. Laila Harré completes the leading duo, trading politics for a passion for good, sustainable food. Her friendly serving team creates a warm atmosphere in the heritage dining room. A small, but carefully selected, beverage list features boutique Waiheke wine alongside favourites from other regions, cocktails, mocktails and a range of beers and nonalcoholic drinks. El Sizzling Chorizo Being lucky enough to work along all the best Chefs of Argentina, Corradino Anselmi, the former owner and founder of El Sizzling Chorizo decided to come on a trip to New Zealand, when he fell in love for this country and its Maori culture. Destiny brought together Corra to meet the love of his life and mother of his sons, Celeste. Behind a great man, there is always a great woman as they say. Without speaking English, but with a lot of experience, he worked in restaurants of all sorts in Auckland until taking decining to create El Sizzling Chorizo. At the beginning it was just a food truck, built with his own hands without much knowledge, doing small events all around Auckland, always backing each other Corra was cooking and Celeste serving. In 2011, working hundreds of hours at the New Zealand Rugby World Cup, Corra’s chorizo won an award of the best chorizo of Auckland by Metro Magazine. They got an invitation to open a little restaurant in the popular Ponsonby Central hub. With little budget and no experience as a builder Corra worked during the day as a builder of Ponsonby Central, and in the evening building his own restaurant El Sizzling Chorizo using recycled materials and the raw knowledge of what he was learning. The hard work paid off and El Sizzling Chorizo brought to New Zealand a whole new concept of a good Argentinean BBQ, nice and simple, as Corra’s personality is.

Khana Khana Indian for food was developed out of a desire to provide a contemporary and boutique presentation of the traditional Indian food. The Khana concept was developed with the New Zealand palate in mind, fresh ingredients and use of fresh vegetables. It includes modern twists on traditional Indian food in its menu. Khana takes its influence from the regions of northern & southern India. North Indian curries usually have thick, moderately spicy
and creamy gravies, while southern indian curries have coconut milk, mustard seeds and curry leaves. North Indians seem to prefer breads- home to the roti and naan bread made in a clay tandoor oven. On contrary South India prefer rice, which is also popular and made into elaborate biryanis. Dairy products like milk, cream, cottage cheese, and yoghurt play an important role in the cooking of both savoury and sweet dishes. In NZ luckily we have all the milk product in abundance which makes our chef to produce quality and fresh food around the year. Khana presents a holistic approach to its food service, providing a company culture and good food from a clean and efficient premises. Where possible Khana uses modern sustainable and environmentally packaging and cleaning products.

WELLINGTON

Shed 5 From the menu

Shed 5 occupies one of the oldest wharf stores in Lambton Harbour. A water’s edge position and an in house fishmonger contributes to Shed 5’s standing as Wellington’s premier seafood restaurant. When the sun is shining, Shed 5’s dining area expands to include an outdoor courtyard with views of Wellington Harbour. On the broad-ranging menu, seafood stands out. Getting his hands on the very best, fresh seafood available is top priority for Shed 5’s fishmonger, who visits the fish markets bright and early each morning to select the day’s ingredients. Fish are always bought whole and filleted at the restaurant in a purpose-built room. Shed 5 quite literally has Wellington Harbour lapping underneath its floor. Saggio di vino Saggio di vino combines traditional European fare with a hint of the modern which results in a refined but simple cuisine appreciated by wine enthusiasts. Saggio’s philosophy is predominated by passion –serving the best food, skilfully prepared using the highest quality ingredients locally sourced. Established in 1991 by Lisa Scholz and Yommi Pawelke at the corner of Bealey Avenue and Victoria Street the ground breaking dining concept was quickly attracting devoted locals. Today the neighbourhood restaurant is considered an institution and a quintessential Christchurch dining experience. Lisa and Yommi had to relocate Saggio di vino after the Canterbury earthquakes and are operating since June 2012 from a new building next door to their original site. While the restaurant has adopted a contemporary interior the philosophy of the dining concept has remained. A menu full of seasonal, beautiful, wellprepared food, fine dining and gourmet innovation are the driving forces here. The menu is Mediterranean inspired and offers an array of fish and meat dishes that are largely sourced locally.

Millbrook Resort From casual fare to contemporary cuisine, Millbrook is home to some of Queenstown’s best restaurants. The Millhouse Restaurant, the signature dining venue of the resort, provides a friendly, relaxed environment in an enviable country setting. Brimming with character, the Millhouse Restaurant still holds the original wall from the old mill house, which operated when the resort was a wheat farm during the gold rush era. The Millhouse water wheel still works today and adds to the historic ambience. Executive Head Chef Andi Bozhiqu has won many restaurant and culinary awards, including the prestigious New Zealand Beef and Lamb Awards for Excellence for the past five years. His menu has many unique offerings such as Southland Venison and Cardrona Merino Lamb.
