Take a much-loved holiday abode on a coveted site with panoramic views of Lake Wānaka and the surrounding mountains. Add a brief to maintain as much of the character of the original dwelling as possible, and mix in a design that balances modern life with functionality and efficiency. This recipe for blending the old and new has produced a flawless holiday home renovation for current and future generations of the owners to enjoy. The winner of the 2021 Southern Supreme Renovation of the Year award, this architectural extension by Salmond Architecture and Dunlop Builders, accommodates an expansive kitchen, living, dining area, master bedroom with ensuite, and separate sleep out. The updated interior boasts a blackened steel feature wall and polished concrete floor, while the open plan kitchen enjoys engineered stone and stainless steel bench tops. 6 | B&R

The dining and living area is surrounded by ceiling-to-floor windows which highlight the formidable drama of Lake Wānaka and invoke a sense of renewal and energy. Meanwhile, the living area leads out on to the large deck, sheltered by over-sized eaves which mirror the original design. The exterior, which is also inkeeping with the existing house, was built using Rosenfeld Kidson vertical cedar cladding and plaster.

The judges of the 2021 House of the Year Southern Region Awards described this project as a clever, seamless renovation that embraced and built upon the original form. “There has been a great use of materials and serious attention to detail, resulting in a beautifully-finished home. The renovation is one that will stand the test of time.” Indeed, new life has been brought into this cherished
family space whilst retaining the existing relationship between the owner, the home and the land. This extension feels so very organic, whilst still comfortable and practical – as though it’s always been there. From custom-designed steel sliders to carefully selected artwork; everything fits together seamlessly to result in an elegant finish. Builder: Dunlop Builders Architect: Salmond Architecture
