From the IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon World Championships, the FM Enduro GP World Championship and the Kalevan Kisat athletics event to FNLD GRVL gravel cycling, Lahti and its surroundings are full of different types of public events – and these are just a snapshot of the summer’s sports events.

In July, the Lahti Passenger Harbour will be taken over by the Suuret oluet, pienet panimot (“Big Beers, Small Breweries”) event. A landscape created by water

The Salpausselkä ridges, formed by ancient glacial meltwater streams, represent Finland’s internationally best-known geological heritage. Salpausselkä Geopark, which extends from the First Salpausselkä ridge in Lahti to the southern part of Lake Päijänne and covers six municipalities, is Finland’s most recent UNESCO site. The region became part of the worldwide UNESCO Global Geoparks network for geological heritage sites of international significance in spring 2022.

The ridges, the long chains of narrow eskers, the magnificent rocky hills and hundreds of lakes dotted with islands create a landscape of unique geological interest. However, the importance of the region is not only based on what is visible on the surface: the Salpausselkä ridges hide within enormous reserves of pure groundwater. The world's finest water can be enjoyed straight out of the tap.

A trip to nature

The Lahti region is a paradise for outdoor exercise lovers. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails and maintained forest tracks to work up a sweat while you enjoy the stunning scenery and stop at a lean-to for a picnic.

At the top of KAPATUOSIAN LINNAVUORI (“Kapatuosia Castle Mountain”) in Hollola, you will find an outlook tower with a view over Lake Vesijärvi and the Salpausselkä ridges. You can climb the hill along paths or stairs. There is a 2.4 kilometre Kapatuosia nature trail in the area.

The LAPAKISTO nature reserve in the Nastola area at Lahti offers a versatile natu-

ral landscape with small lakes, mires and cliffs. The region has five marked trails and several campfire sites and two lean-to shelters along the trails. The easiest way to access the trails is Ristikankaantie parking lot.

There are plenty of outdoor routes next to the services provided at the Hollola municipal centre. The 10.5 km SALPAUSSELKÄ MARSH

You should also take advantage of the restoring effect of nature by taking breaks.
www.visitlahti.fi/ nature

TRAIL covers the landscapes of three mires. The 7.5 km LAKE TRAIL loops around three Tiilijärvi lakes. The varied trails include both steady roads, winding forest paths and duckboard. The 4.5 km TIIRISMAA TRAIL terrain is varied and very rocky in places. The medium difficulty level trail includes features such as a lean-to shelter and the Pirunpesä (‘Devil’s Nest’) gorge.

KOSKENSAARI island in Jyrängönvirta stream is part of the Heinola National Urban Park and important in terms of bird life. The island can be reached by a road. There is a 3.1 km path around the island, Koskensaarenpolku, which is also suitable for mountain biking. There is a lean-to shelter and a campfire site by the trail and a nature trail in the middle of the island.

PULKKILANHARJU NATURE TRAIL

In Asikkala passes through a beautiful landscape of lakes and eskers in the Päijänne National Park. At Pulkkilanharju, there is a 2 km nature trail which can be combined with a 2.4 km circular route featuring a sandy beach and duckboard section. The trail begins at the Karisalmi parking lot.

HARTOLAN KUNINKAANPOLKU

TRAIL is a combination of nature and culture. By the trail consisting of four sections, you can discover features such as the Tainionvirta river, the arched Ekonkoski bridge, the peatland forest and cultural sites. The dirt roads and walkways on the Kuninkaanpolku Trail are easy to walk, and the Ekonpolku section is accessible. The trail has two swimming beaches.

AURINKOVUORI next to the Vääksy services in Asikkala provides outdoor routes, two lean-to shelters with campfire sites and training stairs with 239 steps. The viewing platform next to the lean-to shelter closer to the centre provides a beautiful view of Lake Päijänne, and there is a view of Lake Vesijärvi from the Kivistö lean-to shelter.

The 12.6 km PÄIJÄNNE-ILVESTRAIL, starts from the Padasjoki Marina and leads to the Tarus recreation area where you can continue your journey to the Evo Ilves trail. The versatile trail passes through walkways, dirt roads and forest paths. The trail features field landscapes, forest terrain and a lean-to shelter with a campfire sites.

LEMMENHARJU NATURE TRAIL in Vierumäki travels along eskers with steep slopes and the shores of small lakes with clear water. You can opt for a 4 km route or a shorter 2.4 km route. There are two campfire sites near the main building of the Sport Institute of Finland on the shore of Lake Valkjärvi.

HIIDENSAARI ISLAND and HIIDENVUORI HILL in Iitti form an important national landscape. Hiidensaari Island provides plenty of easyto-follow routes. The wooden stairs on the island lead to the top of the 60 m Hiidenvuori Hill with an excellent view. On Hiidensaari Island, you can go hiking or mountain biking. There is also a guest harbour on the island, accessible by boat or canoe.

RADANSUU NATURE TRAIL in Iitti covers a distance of approximately 8 km in the Radansuu Village landscape. There are fascinating sights along the way, such as the small Kalmusaari island with lean-to shelter and a campfire site. The trail is relatively easy to follow and contains long boardwalk sections.

Just seven kilometres from the centre of Lahti, the valuable LINNAISTENSUO marsh is home to stunted pine trees, sphagnum moss and marsh Labrador tea. A nature trail of about 1.5 km runs through the marsh.

The entire 13 km of the LEHMUSREITTI route around the centre of Lahti is within a maximum of two kilometres from the market square. The route offers varied nature experiences right next to the city’s services.

KELVENNE ISLAND which is part of the Päijänne National Park, is located in Southern Päijänne. It is one of Finland’s largest and most beautiful esker islands. An 8 km trail with blue trail markers passes through the Kelvenne island. There are several campfire sites along the trail. In summer, Kelvenne is accessible by boat, canoe, cruise ship or boat taxi.

The rocky PÄIJÄTSALO island in Sysmä on the eastern shore of Lake Päijänne is partly within the territory of the Päijänne National Park. The Päijätsalo trails can be accessed by road, but it is also possible to arrive at Pyydysniemi by boat. There is a recently renovated over 120-year-old observation tower at the highest point of the island. There are new trails also for mountaing biking.

KAMMIOVUORI HILL in Sysmä is the second-highest peak in southern Finland and an excellent site for a day-trip. There is a magnificent view of Lake Päijänne from the top of the Kammiovuori Hill. The area has a 4 km trail with steep uphill and downhill slopes, the gigantic Linta boulder and a lean-to shelter with a campfire site. ■

TIP!

Grab a bike and get to know the region

What is an ecological, fitness-improving and summery way to explore the Lahti region? Cycling. There are easy local trails and dedicated cycling trails for road, gravel and mountain bikes, as well as for touring cyclists. The Welcome Cyclist logo helps you find services for cyclists.

AROUND LAKE VESIJÄRVI is a classic route that active cyclists tend to ride several times each summer. You should start in the morning and have sufficiently many resting and refuelling breaks. The shortest version of the route is 80 km in length, and even a less experienced cyclist will be able to cover that distance during a single day.

SALPAUSSELKÄ TRAILS are forest trails marked in the terrain in the Salpausselkä region in Lahti and Hollola. The off-road trails are meant for both hiking and mountain biking. There are a total of around 30 km of marked Salpausselkä Trails, but those using a hybrid bike should also head for the dozens of kilometres of gravel trails in the Salpausselkä region.

SPORTS CENTRES Vierumäki and Pajulahti offer mountain biking opportunities for cyclists of all levels. You can also rent a bike.

The VELLAMO CYCLING ROUTE is a 71 km marked ring route between Hartola and Sysmä. There are nice places to take a break in the parish villages of Sysmä and Hartola, at the legendary Krouvi dance pavilion and at the sunny terrace of Ilola Inn on the shore of Lake Päijänne.

TOUR OF HOLLOLA CHURCH is one of the favourite routes of local cyclists. You can ride the 37 km route in either direction, but you should choose to go against the wind during the early part of the route. The route ascends to the top of the Salpausselkä ridge and descends from there. There are plenty of services along the route.

THE PÄIJÄTSALO BIKEPOLKU mountain bike trail circles the Päijätsalo Island in two parts, divided into an easier blue section and a more challenging red section with altitude differences. The entire route goes along forest paths.

FROM VÄÄKSY TO PULKKILANHARJU ESKER AND KALKKINEN You can ride this 57 km route along paved roads with a mountain or road bike. Pulkkilanharju esker is part of Finland’s most beautiful scenic route. Parts of the esker are included in Päijänne National Park.

This summer, the Lahti region hosts the FNLD GRVL gravel cycling event. Finland’s biggest gravel cycling event NORDIC GRAVEL SERIES will take place in the Lahti region in September. There are routes of 50, 90 and 146 km. FNLD GRVL 10 June, Nordic Gravel Series 22–23 September ■

LAHDEN PYSÄKÖINTI has five multi-storey car parks in different parts of the city. They have a total of more than 2,300 parking spaces, providing a convenient and safe way to park your car in a sheltered location. The car parks are located at central locations.

A TIER E-SCOOTER is a handy means of transport. In Lahti, you can use e-scooters in the area between the Travel Centre and Mukkula. E-scooters can be accessed using the Tier app.

With SHARED ELECTRIC CARS , you can take comfortable and sustainable trips around the Lahti region. Pick up your car at the Toriparkki car park in the centre of Lahti, explore the region and return the car to the same place.

things together. The driving forces behind Malski are innovative companies, the Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva, the Sammio event space, the Malski Bistro restaurant, Kahiwa Coffee & Wine and the brewery-pub Ant Brew.

The architecturally impressive tower of CHURCH OF THE CROSS designed by architect Alvar Aalto, rises above the city on Kolkanmäki hill, the site of an old church. The south end of the church has a cruciform grouping of 52 windows. An integral part of the cityscape, the Church of the Cross elegantly mirrors the CITY HALL by another master architect, Eliel Saarinen, at the southern end of an axis crossing the Market Square.

PASSENGER HARBOUR, SIBELIUS HALL AND LAHTI LETTERS. You can see all of these while walking along Satamaraitti at the shore of Lake Vesijärvi. success, it always leaves good taste…

To the water!

The Lahti region has plenty of clean lakes, beaches and islands which you can reach by a canoe, if you like. There are also three canals to get from one lake to another.

PÄIJÄNNE NATIONAL PARK BY BOAT There are guest harbours for all tastes on the islands within the Päijänne National Park. You can choose to rest in a sheltered cove, an open sandy beach or a rocky shore. Guest harbours feature camping sites, fire places with firewood and outhouses. Please follow the camping rules to preserve the sensitive nature of the National Park. If you do not have a boat of your own, you can rent one or take a boat taxi. Please also get to know the Skipperi and Bout services.

ENJOY A CRUISE Short lunchtime cruises and evening cruises to the Vääksy Canal and cruises to the Lahti-Heinola-Lahti line set out from

the Lahti harbour. Cruises to Päijänne and the Kelvenne island in the Päijänne National Parks set out from Pulkkilanharju esker Padasjoki. From Heinola, you can take a cruise to the Kimola Canal or to the Vuolenkoski summer market.

A THREE CANAL TOUR If you get a boat in Lahti, you can travel through three canals in the area. Lake Vesijärvi is connected with Lake Päijänne at the Vääksy Canal. The Kalkkinen Canal provides access to Lake Ruotsalainen. As for the Kimola Canal, it is connected with Lake Pyhäjärvi. For you to enjoy a swimming break, the sun and the Finnish lakes, there are village harbours and sandy beaches

Get out on the water and admire the region’s lakeside scenery.

along the way. Nearly all harbours have services for boaters, ranging from refuelling to restaurants. The beautiful Wanha Vääksy old town and its boutiques are at a walking distance from the Vääksy Canal. The Kimola Canal is in itself worth visiting: the canal is 5.5 kilometres long, it has 12-metre high lock and a unique channel tunnel.

FISHING FOR THE FAMILY In Lahti, there are sites suitable for fishing on the beach. For instance, the breakwaters in the Niemi and Teivas harbour are well suited for angling and lure fishing. The Joutjoki delta attracts plenty of different species of fish. In Heinola, it is possible to fish in the Rantapuisto park. In Asikkala by the Enskala nature trail, there are fishing spots for children. Flyfishers can go to River Hammonjoki in Hollola or to River Tainionvirta in Sysmä and Hartola.

Get your swimsuit and HEAD TO THE BEACH!

There are 12 beaches in Lahti and 14 beaches in Hollola alone. You can swim in the Rantapuisto beach park in Ankkuri, in Messilä, Mukkula, Herrasmanni, Likolampi, Mytäjäinen and Möysä. One of southern Finland’s best sandy beaches is in Asikkala. The long and shallow sandy beach in Kalmarinranta is for the whole family. There are seven beaches in Padasjoki. The best beach in Heinola is Kylpylänranta beach by the beautiful Kymenvirta river. There is a playground in the Urajärvi swimming beach in Iitti. In Sysmä, you can swim on the beach of the camping area. In Hartola, the Aurinkoranta is worth a visit.

Anybody can go CANOEING OR STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING. A beginner can learn the basics on a guided canoeing trip. A more experienced canoeist can plan a longer route that utilises the lean-tos and places to make a fire in the region. Moving at the water level opens up a whole new interesting viewpoint to the surrounding scenery. With a kayak or canoe, you can get to places that you could not reach with a boat. Stand up paddleboarding or SUP is the perfect way to enjoy the water. It also improves fitness and balance. SUP is for everyone, regardless of age, size or fitness level. ■

Fishing or a boat trip

Salpausselkä Pro Fishing organises fishing and boat trips of various lengths. With a skilled fishing guide, anglers of all levels will have a great experience.

TIP! Relax by the water.

Want to get out on the water, but don’t have a boat?

You can hire a boat from Skipperi or order a boat taxi with a skipper from Bout.

Some of the region’s popular destinations, such as Enonsaari Island and the islands of the Päijänne National Park, can only be reached by boat. Thanks to Bout, you don’t need to own a boat or have any boating experience. The service connects local boaters and boat taxi entrepreneurs to people who want to get on the water. Bout requires individuals providing boat rides to be legally qualified, so you can concentrate on enjoying the sun and boating. Skipper differs from Bout in that through Skipper, you can hire a boat without a skipper. ■
