PORT 1961 RESORT 2017

SEE BY CHLOE RESORY 2017

Today, women are taking a stand on traditional style and attitudes and those changes in tradition are becoming evident. In fashion I can see a clear change in silhouette when it comes to womens clothing. Normally, you would think of female clothing as slim fitting and physically flattering to the body. However, as seen in the examples above, the slim fit is moving towards an oversized silhouette that wreaks of a romantic defiance to tradition. There is more of a focus on comfort rather than sexiness but in a way, that sense of new found comfort is one of the more beautiful things that women can wear.

VETEMENTS SPRING 2017

YOHGI YAMAMOTO SPRING 2017

BALENCIAGA SPRING 2017

I am also seeing this same trend emerging from menswear runways for Sping 2017. While some might not see this as severe of a silhouette change compared to the women, I condsider it to be. Menswear had a large focus on slim fitting suits to also show off the male physique and I believe that this change allows men to have more creativity in their styling when it comes to formalwear and suiting. Some designers are exaggerating the structure and some are exaggerating the exact opposite - deconstruction. Either way, inspiration seems to be pulled from suiting styles of the 1980s, whether it is that severe shoulder or the severe looseness. This trend is changing the traditional suiting for mens and almost making it more accessible for casual streetwear.

Having a focus on this trend and how it is affecting men’s and women’s style allows there to be an undertone of androgyny. The two styles are being displayed similarly through each sex and has sense of cool confidentce with it. I think it is important to put more of a focus on the trend, not just in street style. In a way, it seems to me that women are taking a stand which follows suit with this new kind of feminism movement that is going on in our culture. The counter trend with the menswear almost responding to that is showing their own voice and need for creativity.

BEAUFILLE FALL 2016

MARNI FALL 2016

THE ROW SPRING 2016

Women have started opting for an ultra romantic princess style blouse. In the past, if women were looking for a romantic silhouette, the go to usually was an empire waist or a romantic neckline. Lately, i have been seeing this sleeve pop up on the runways but even more so in street style. There is something about this billowy sleeve, especially when paired with an off the sholder neckline, that is so elegant on a woman. Not only does this style pull from traditional regal styles but it also has a coolness that pulls from the hippie movement in the 1960s and 1970s. In the three runway examples above, each has the blouse style represented but each emanate different vibes - from punk rock to classic.

As seen in the examples, this trend is dominating the streetstyle. To me, there is such a soft elegance to the women wearing this style blouse. The similar shape is used in the Beaufille pants shown and I would love to see that shape take place in more ways than just tops. I would love to see this trend spread wider, possibly more into pants, more into structured jackets and would also love to see it emerge into menswear. Some recent menswear runway shows have examples of the off the shoulder tops but I would be interested to see the more structured “princess sleeve take shape in the menswear world as well.

TREND THREE // MEN’S // TRANSPARENCY

COMME DES GARCONS SPRING 2017

ANN DEMEULEMEESTER SPRING 2017

OFF WHITE SPRING 2017

See through clothing is coming back but this time it is for the guys. Mesh and transparent clothing is typically seen in women’s clothing and I think the examples above are great reasons why men can pull this look off too. There is a slight androgynous tone to this trend but it also brings forward a sense of vulnerablity which traditionally would be taboo for men. Stripping the clothing down allows this trend to span over both sexes but I see an importance in specifically focusing on this trend in menswear. It is delicate and light which is a nice transition from all the harsh structure and deep colors that have been on the runway.

Seen in the examples above, the versatility of this transperency trend are vast. It can be worked into street wear that is more punk style as well as business casual style. Either way, I think it is beautiful how the skin of the men can be seen. It is also a form of art for expressing themselves and that is clear esspecially in the Lanvin suit that reveals all the tattoos of the guy wearing it. The fact that this shift of transperency is moving away from womens clothing and more into men’s seems very important to me. Take the vulnerability away from women and placing it onto men’s clothing, stripping away the layers and showing their skin allows for more depth and creativity.

DELPOZO RESORT 2017

3.1 PHILLIP LIM RESORT 2017

VALENTINO RESORT 2017

Authenticity is becoming something that people value when it comes to their clothes and how they are seen. When I see embroidery and aplique on clothing, I get this sense of authenticity. I think it is great that this value of artsiness and traditional technique is coming back because it brings the high end quality back into fashion. You feel as though you can really feel the work that was put into whatever the item is, whether it is a full embroidered suit or a small handbag like in the examples above.

A new wave of arts and crafts is coming back with a big emphasis on DIY projects. The beauty of this trend is whether it is a high end item or homemade patch, it can be done and look authentic. This trend takes the value of adding to clothing and the idea of “more is more. Alessandro Michele expresses this same idea with the new collections of Gucci and it can apply across the board. Taking the idea of making something old, new again is not a new concept but I think it definitely coming back in style, and in some many creative ways. On top of looking good, the trend makes this idea and style accessible to anyone. It is a trend that you can buy or learn to do yourself and I think it adds a nice pop of edginess and crafty authenticity and I am happy to see it emerging on runways and not just in a simple boho blouse.
