COMPLIMENTARY DORSET CHAMBER AGM 2022 T LEVELS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHY CAN’T I RECRUIT AT THE MOMENT? RECRUITMENT, RETENTION AND RESTRUCTURING YOUR PEOPLE, YOUR BUSINESS DORSET CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY OFFICIAL BUSINESS MAGAZINE | ISSUE 49, JANUARY 2023 ISSN 2752-6313 (Print) | ISSN 2752-6321 (Online)

Last year proved to be challenging for us all and we know this will continue into 2023 but I am of the firm belief we need to remain positive and not be smothered by the doom and gloom in the media. Yes, of course we face challenging times, but we must continue to think positively and move forward with business plans. With this in mind, I’d like to briefly set out our priorities for the year ahead.

We will continue to push our support to businesses through membership. Membership of Dorset Chamber offers businesses a local voice, vital protection for your business, the opportunity to meet and work with like-minded people – and crucially raise your profile in the business community. Membership is extremely reasonable and if you aren’t a member, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and find out how we can support you. My colleague Paul Taylor on paul.taylor@ dorsetchamber.co.uk will be delighted to speak to you. Helping businesses expand into new international markets will remain a priority for Dorset Chamber. We are all aware of the challenges that have arisen over the last couple of years but export markets remain very strong for many Dorset businesses. We have a team on hand that can advise you on all aspects of trading overseas, offer training to develop your capacity in this

area and of course provide the crucial documentation you will need when exporting. Contact Sue Bhatt on sue.bhatt@dorsetchamber.co.uk to find out more.

Health and wellbeing of our teams and business leaders will continue to be a priority next year –building personal and business resilience. We have plans to expand our GU6 programme, supporting the wellbeing of business leaders and will continue with our events and workshops in this area.

This year has also seen a strong focus on ESG by Dorset Chamber – promoting best practice around the areas of environmental, social and governance best practice. This will remain a focus including a major push on help for businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and we’ll be emphasising the business case on this – essentially why its imperative businesses embrace this.

A positive and forward thinking approach will be vital for us all this year and the team at Dorset Chamber will be on hand to support wherever we can.

Happy New Year and best wishes

Restructuring? Get your HR strategy in place

The CIPD’s quarterly Labour Market Outlook report for Autumn 2022 painted a mixed picture of the UK job market. It noted that the UK will likely enter a downturn soon and that, while redundancy intentions are currently low, 16% of employers are planning to make redundancies in the three months to December 2022, which is up from 13% last quarter.

Redundancies often hit the headlines, particularly when things are handled poorly, which can result in unwanted damage to a business’s reputation, as well as upset and concern for the individuals involved.

As a business owner, having to make redundancies is one of the more difficult decisions you’ll need to make. It is particularly daunting if you are the one who has to break the bad news to long-term colleagues.

Alternatives to redundancies

Whilst there are times when redundancies may be the only way for a business to survive, it is important that it is a measure of ‘last resort’, when all other options have been considered and exhausted.

Alternatives may include offering voluntary redundancies, moving employees into other roles, reducing levels of overtime, ceasing recruitment activities, and perhaps reducing or altering working hours.

The importance of process

It is important to ensure a fair redundancy process is followed, starting by informing employees of your plans and the reasons you need to take action. Where individuals are directly impacted, they will need to be informed in writing. Where 20 or more redundancies are planned (over a period of 90 days or less), you may need to include a period of ‘collective consultation’.

Redundancy consultations

Consultation meetings will be a key part in exploring any alternatives that may avoid redundancy, they must be genuine and meaningful and take place prior to any decisions being made. If consultation is not carried out correctly, you could face unfair dismissal claims. Engaging with the workforce early in the process may also uncover a desire for voluntary redundancy or reduction in working hours which may suit both parties.

Consider the selection pool

The methods used for selecting employees at risk of redundancy are important, and you must avoid any potential discrimination throughout this exercise. You will need to carefully consider how you determine who may be impacted, either by ‘pooling’ employees or by creating a fair selection and scoring system which you will need to share with those directly affected (whilst ensuring confidentiality is maintained). This can be quite a nuanced process and there are special rules surrounding certain individuals such as those on maternity leave that are is easy to fall foul of.

Redundancy pay

The process of calculating redundancy pay (whether statutory or contractual), including the handling of any overtime, holiday, bonus, and furlough periods will need to be handled carefully to ensure that no elements are overlooked.

Giving employees notice of redundancy

It is also important to ensure you have the right people involved in meeting with individuals, informing them of the outcome and giving notice of redundancy. Although redundancy is about the role that is no longer required, and not the person who carries it out, each redundancy involves an individual who will be losing their employment, and so showing sensitivity and respect is important. And don’t forget that those who are not selected for redundancy are also likely to feel unsettled.

Get help if you need it

Whilst saving money is going to be at the front of your mind at any time when you’re considering redundancies, it’s important to consider whether you need external help with the process. Having assistance to get a redundancy process right will save you time and effort, and potentially money too if it means you avoid the cost of subsequent unfair dismissal claims that may be brought following a rushed or incorrect redundancy exercise. Bournemouth & Poole College is thrilled to be launching T Levels in September 2023. With three courses available and many more in the pipeline for the future, now is the time for businesses to understand what they are, the benefits and steps to take to prepare for their future.

What are they?

T Levels are a new qualification equal to three A Levels, but with a technical focus and mandatory workplace-based learning that makes up 20% of the course.

In practice, this means a 16–18-year-old student will study T Levels for two years, spending a day a week (or a block placement) with an employer. Like apprenticeships, students will learn through a blend of workplace learning and learning at college. Unlike apprenticeships, there is a balance of 80% of time at college and 20% of time at the workplace.

Like A Levels and BTECs, T Levels attract UCAS points. Successful T Level students can continue their studies at university or go directly into work. How will they benefit businesses?

The benefits of T Levels, compared to other more traditional routes through

education, are huge for employers.

Firstly, by offering work placements employers can develop a direct talent pipeline with a yearly output of qualified, trained potential employees [CS1] with the experience and work connections that no amount of traditional education can provide. By being involved in their education, employers can guarantee that young people are leaving college with the skills they need to start having an impact in their workplace as early as possible.

Businesses can also benefit from longterm work placements with current students at no cost. Recognising the importance of work experience to the student, there is no expectation that work placements should be paid. This doesn’t mean that the student won’t make impact in the business, however – in fact, it’s expected that the placement student will work just like any other employee.

Students can complete their placements in timeframes suitable for business needs. Whether it’s one day a week for the full two-year course length or a shorter period of multiple days a week, T Level placements are flexible and allow businesses to plan placements around projects, commitments and demand. For some employers, a 45-day block placement is more suitable when the student has already completed a significant amount

of college-based education. Others will prefer a longer-term placement.

What about the students?

Students on T Levels will benefit too. Leaving college or school with little or no relevant work experience will be a thing of the past. Students on T Levels gain valuable experience in the workplace while still studying in an academic setting for most of their time.

What is available locally?

A small number of providers are beginning to offer T Levels locally. One of the challenges in providing T Levels is the need for work placements – something that takes resourcing and planning, as well as maintaining industry connections.

Bournemouth & Poole College, already Dorset’s leading apprenticeship provider, plans to launch many T Levels over the coming years. T Levels in Digital Production & Development, Surveying & Design for Construction and Education & Childcare are the first, launching in September 2023.

Why can’t I recruit at

Helen Stacey, Dorset Chamber Ambassador and MD of Aspire Jobs has over 30 years’ experience helping to match candidates and clients. “In the current market there are more jobs than there are people,” says Helen. “Many employers are looking for that perfect person, but sadly, unicorn candidates are few and far between. However, there are some things you can do to help secure the best recruit for your business.”

Know what you want: Be clear on what you want/need, but also consider how and where you can compromise on skills, cultural fit, or other aspects of employment. Skills are transferable but recruiting the wrong person for your company culture can actually end up costing you money.

Be responsive: People are moving roles at the moment but the good people are moving off the market really quickly. Once a CV gets posted to a job board, candidates can have interviews and offers within 24/48 hours So if you’re recruiting you need to move quickly, you can’t procrastinate. Prioritise interviews, calls, and interaction with candidates.

Promote your business: As much as candidates need to promote themselves to you, businesses also need to showcase themselves to the candidate. Good people are getting multiple job offers so you need to make yourself attractive to them. You are having to sell to them.

Consider the Package: If you haven’t recruited for a while make sure you know what the current salary range is locally but also consider other benefits and where possible offer flexibility. In some cases, people will compromise on salary for the right package. Areas for negotiation might include working from home, flexible working hours, holiday allowance etc. One recent employer allows its staff to bring dogs to the office – great for attracting talent who bought dogs through Covid.

Get Expert Support: In this competitive marketplace, having a trusted advisor or recruitment consultant on hand can make a real difference. Established, skilled recruiters will know what is going on in your market and how to reach out and find suitable candidates and can quickly assess skills on CV against your requirement. They also have access to passive talent who may not be actively looking or on job boards but the right offer might tempt them to move.

People are People: Ultimately even if you find the right candidate and you complete all the prechecks, people can change their mind. Don’t lose faith. Get back out in the marketplace and find that unicorn.

Happy New Year!

Looking back at 2022 I would like to congratulate Ian and his team on a very successful year. We have shown that Dorset Chamber can continue to thrive even in the toughest climate, and in an incredibly competitive marketplace for membership organisations. This is what defines a dynamic Business Chamber and is why I am so incredibly proud to have served as President.

I would also like to recognise our board of Directors. We are fortunate to have an impressive selection of business leaders who give up their precious time to bestow their expert advice and perspective, without which the Chamber would not be where it is today.

Looking ahead in my third year as President, I will be honoured to continue to support the initiatives we’ve started, to further strengthen and evolve the Chamber for the benefit of all. I’m also excited that the Chamber’s popular events are back in full swing post pandemic. We’ve hosted over 70 events over the past 12 months, with thousands of businesspeople attending, making Dorset Chamber the most attended and active business community in the region. We also have the return of the Dorset Business Awards for 2023 – with a brand-new look! Myself, Ian and the board have gone back to the drawing board to create an even better event experience, and we can’t wait to see you all there.

To finish, let me thank you all for your loyal membership over the last 12 months. I truly believe that for the Chamber, its members and Dorset’s business community at large, 2023 holds wondrous possibilities – if we continue to work together, support one another, and lead the way as dynamic, forward-thinking business leaders.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Savills celebrates 75 years in Wimborne

The office has its roots in land agency, with one of the sons of Savills founder, Alfred Savill, being appointed to manage the Canford Estate for Lord Wimborne in the 1930s. The Estate office was in Lower Parkstone.

In 1947, the resident agent for the Canford Estate was Edward Pratt. He opened the office in Wimborne to use his expertise to manage other landed estates in the area as well as Canford. A notable early success was Edward’s involvement with the Crichel Down Affair which remains an authority on compulsorily purchased land. The office subsequently grew with the recruitment of a group of forward-thinking land agents and the development of one of the country’s leading mapping offices. It also developed major business streams in pension fund rural investment, and pipelining and cabling work. The office moved to its current home

at Wessex House in 1965, which it then shared with several other companies. Savills grew to take over the whole building and by 1976 it was overflowing, with a portacabin in the car park. To accommodate the ever-growing team, the Wessex House office was extended in 1982.

The office is now home to more than 130 people, with a strong reputation and specialists covering a wealth of property services including residential sales across Dorset and south Somerset; farm and estate management; and development land consultancy and agency.  A team of planning experts cover large-scale projects and residential schemes, public sector work and strategic land, while the energy and infrastructure team manage telecom sites, wind, and solar farms. There are further teams covering valuations; national client

accounting services specialising in the residential, commercial, and rural property sectors; nationwide cartography, design and GIS; building consultancy; healthcare; and providing integrated real estate services to corporate occupiers worldwide.

Mark Turnbull, head of office at Savills Wimborne, who has worked for the firm for 33 years, says: “We are very proud of our longstanding presence in Wimborne and our role within the property sector in Dorset and nationally. The growth of the office since it began with the opening of Savills first office outside London is testament to the calibre of our team and our fantastic support from clients, alongside our ability to be at the forefront of thought leadership and our skills in navigating emerging opportunities.

“In addition to the spawning of several Savills offices across the south, many graduates and other professionals have had their initial grounding within the Wimborne office and have since moved to other offices and to further professional careers, many achieving very senior positions.”

Staff Recruitment and Retention in 2022

2022 has seen a number of challenges around recruitment and retention of staff for a lot of businesses. Having gone through focus on remote working, followed by the Great Resignation, the UK companies are now facing the Great Return phase, where the previously resigned employees, having experienced other working environments are now considering returning to their previous employers.

The access to the candidate market originally heavily impacted by Brexit and pandemic has seen some stabilisation and improvement toward the end of 2022 with more workers expressing readiness to work and many having to return to work due to financial pressures. However, the staff shortages continue, and further reviews of the immigration system would be welcome.

For many businesses, 2022 has been a year of reviewing internal procedures, benefits, and salaries in an aim to increase their competitiveness in the candidate market. We have seen changes to shift patterns, attendance bonuses, retainer bonuses as well as improvements of internal facilities to retain the workers. The strategic forward planning of staffing has been at the heart of those businesses that have been affected by the current lack of candidate availability and the boom in new opportunities in the job market. Increase in flexibility of working hours and engagement of part-time workers has been a welcome opportunity by many candidates and a relief to many employers. The biggest impact, however, has been on the hourly pay rates for staff. It has been a real race to the top which is likely to continue in 2023 with the new living wage increasing again in April.

The training and investment in staff will be the key to retention and business efficiencies in the coming year. Businesses should be looking to engage with reputable training providers to guarantee a continuous improvement of processes and development of staff.

It’s strongly believed that all of the work that has been done throughout 2022 to improve businesses’ attractiveness to candidates and to increase the retention of staff has been crucial and will give strong foundations as we go into 2023. It would be naïve to believe that the new year will not bring new challenges, especially with the current economic and political climate, however, the lessons learnt in 2022 will not be lost on us all. Here’s to a strong 2023 and new things to come!

Greendale Construction Site Managers achieve NVQ Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management

Two Greendale Construction site managers have achieved their NVQ Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management – a qualification aimed at senior managers in a leadership role within a construction organisation wanting to obtain a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to a PGC.

Dan Hawker joined the chartered building company in September 2013 as a site carpenter before moving into the role of assistant site manager and then site manager. Blake Lennan, who this year was a finalist in the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) 2022 Awards, joined the firm as a site manager in July 2020. Both Dan and Blake completed the course with James Owen, Managing Director of JRS Training and Assessment Limited, based in Poole. The course included mandatory modules covering: Managing teams in construction management; providing advice, judgement and services ethically in construction management; developing self and others; control projects, and planning a construction organisation’s workforce.  Successful completion of the diploma also means Dan and Blake are now eligible to progress on to becoming a Chartered Construction Manager with the CIOB. Blake Lennan, site manager, Greendale Construction said: “James from JRS Training fully understood the responsibilities and commitment that I had as a site manager running a busy site, and how this would impact the amount of time I had to work towards my NVQ. We formed a plan and this allowed me to achieve my NVQ in around 4 months through utilising professional discussions. Since achieving the NVQ, I have been able to gain my membership status to the Chartered Institute of Building – an achievement I am extremely proud of.”

Maria Seabright, HR/finance director, Greendale Construction, added: “It is a priority for Greendale to invest in our staff and encourage them to better themselves in their careers. Completing nationally recognised construction courses such as the NVQ Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management not only helps them grow, progress, and reach their full potential in their chosen careers, but also increases our team members’ self-confidence and self-esteem in their role. We are all very proud of Dan and Blake’s achievement, which they thoroughly deserve, having studied so diligently whilst carrying on in their jobs.”

James Owen; Managing Director MCIOB

of JRS Training and Assessment Limited, commented:

“Supporting local businesses with their staff training and development is crucial to sustained success and growth within Dorset. Collaborating with Greendale once again with management qualifications was a fantastic opportunity to guide and support Blake and Dan with a very challenging, industry driven, vocational qualification.

“It gives me an enormous amount of pride to be able to support construction professionals on their journey to achieve the highly prestigious and coveted accolade of becoming Chartered with CIOB. Achieving MCIOB isn’t easy and takes a huge amount of dedication, determination and commitment and I’m pleased we were able to play a significant part in their journey.

“Greendale’s commitment towards their staff coupled with investment in training is exceptional, we consider ourselves very fortunate to be a trusted training provider and we look forward to developing the next group of managers within Greendale.”

REIDsteel forges winning team

The Christchurch-based company – John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd to give its full name – has a 120-strong workforce and counting; they range from skilled fabricators and engineers to talented detailers and expert teams on construction sites working together to produce state-of-the-art steel buildings, bridges and structures around the UK, Europe, and the World.

Achievements – such as winning a prestigious Structural Steel Design Award for a super-hangar designed, manufactured, and built for Biggin Hill Airport recently – are very much considered the result of the efforts of every single person at the firm rather than simply an accomplishment by the project team.

Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, says “Our company values are central to how we work and everything we

do. Our ‘One Team’ ethos puts people and safety first to deliver for our customers.

“We believe our people are our company – where team members are valued and treated with mutual respect within an inclusive and diverse culture which is open to all.

“Integrity is at the heart of all we do which means we believe in transparency, openness and honesty while embracing a ‘no blame culture’ in order to learn from mistakes, embrace change and drive continuous improvement.”

With many of its employees living in the area, the company makes a valuable contribution to the local economy in salaries and its supply chain.

As well as recruiting locally, REIDsteel develops talent from within with clear pathways for career progression. It also takes students on work experience, collaborates

with Bournemouth University, and recently joined in a careers fair with Dorset Engineering and Manufacturing Cluster.

REIDsteel is keen to build even stronger links with schools and provide opportunities for young people in a skilled, rewarding, and worthwhile career.

The company remains family owned with a dynamic, diverse, and progressive management team. Employee retention is high with some long-serving members of staff having more than 30 years under their belt. The company is also expanding with a variety of job openings currently available.

There’s a strong focus on wellbeing and a vibrant social calendar with recent activities including a golf day, charity coffee mornings, weekly lunchtime walks, a Christmas jumper day, and participation in the RNLI Fun Day Raft Race at Mudeford.

Simon said: “We take pride in our people and believe that our ‘one team’ ethos means that they are proud to work here, want to stay and do the very best for each-other and our clients.”

Intelligent Land launches its bespoke land service package

After a summer and autumn of political turmoil, the new buzz phrase is “austerity 2.0”. Of course, no-one really knows what that might mean, and economic forecasts seem to change day by day.

What does seem certain however is that the public sector especially faces challenging times ahead.

With that in mind, Intelligent Land has developed what it is calling its Land Service Package, which is designed to help organisations, especially in the public sector, who are seeking innovative ways to raise funds and capital receipts to support service delivery and policy objectives.

Simon Trueick, IL’s Director of Planning, in launching the Land Service Package, says:

‘The public sector is often asset rich but revenue poor. Sources of revenue are being squeezed, while staffing and other costs, especially energy, are rising. Those land and property assets could be one answer to this.’ www.intel-land.com

Setting Goals in 2023

It may sound like a cliche to set new year resolutions, but studies (scientific and anecdotal) show that setting clear goals and targets in your personal and professional life can help you achieve your aims quicker and more consistently. When it comes to running a project, campaign or business, setting goals, KPIs and making a plan it’s just par for the course. Having a vision or image of what you want to achieve allows you to stay focused, to measure distance travelled and to recognise achievement. It’s how runners win marathons, people climb mountains and it can help you realise your goals in 2023.

So how do you get yours in place? There is a plethora of information online about personal goals, but the first is to ask yourself - what do I want to achieve? This could be an ambitious goal which fundamentally changes your way of life. It could be a series of ‘smaller goals’. Try being really clear on what you want to achieve.

Once you’re clear on your goals, it’s time to think about a) why that goal is important to you (that will help you know that it’s the right goal and what incentivises you to reach this) and b) how you will get there. Use the same SMART approach as you would in your business dealings.

It’s worthwhile creating a structure for your commitment. Some people like to use a vision board, or you may prefer a notebook or diary, it doesn’t really matter what the format is, committing your thoughts to paper will make it feel concrete. Ask yourself:

• What is my goal(s)?

• What is the impact of achieving this goal (feelings, behaviours, lifestyle)?

• What is the impact of me not achieving this goal?

• What is stopping me from achieving this goal?

• What do I need to do to achieve this goal ?

• What is the first thing I need to do?

• How will I know I’ve reached my goal?

Create a plan with a series of measurable goals, don’t try to achieve transformation overnight. Remember, ‘progress not perfection’ and you will soon have your goal in reach.

How employers can use benefits to improve employee retention

With news articles regularly indicating that good candidates are hard to come by, many organisations will be looking to do all they can to ensure they keep a close eye on staff turnover.

Losing experienced members of staff, particularly to a competitor, can significantly impact organisations and it can take time for a new member of staff to settle in and undergo the necessary training.

Employees’ priorities are likely to have quickly shifted over the last few years from focusing on health, to flexible and hybrid working and possibly now to the cost of living and family finances.

Rather than focusing purely on staff salaries, employers can look at a range of benefits to help retain staff. A comprehensive benefits package can improve morale for existing staff and help with your reputation when it comes to recruiting talent.

Flexible working can be a popular benefit (with UK employees able to request flexible working from their first day of employment under new government plans). Training, coaching and mentoring can be beneficial to a range of employees from those starting out in their careers to those seeking promotion.

Gym memberships can assist with finances whilst improving the health and wellbeing of your workforce and access to GP appointments and employee assistances programmes will always be popular. However, don’t overlook the more informal benefits you are able to offer such as discounts schemes with local retailers or on-site showering and cycle storage facilities.

Local charities Talbot Village Trust and Nuffield Health have submitted a formal planning application to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council for the Talbot Innovation Quarter. The application, which seeks approval to develop land south of the Wallisdown Road, includes plans for a new Nuffield Health Hospital.

The submission comes following extensive public consultation and as urgent healthcare needs in the community continue to rise.

The Innovation Quarter is reflective of the approved Poole Local Plan and promises to deliver economic growth, including creating an additional 1,370 jobs across Dorset, representing £48m per annum in earnings for local people.

Nick Ashley Cooper, Chairman of Talbot Village Trust commented: “The Innovation Quarter is a once in a generation opportunity to create a positive transformational impact for BCP and the region.

“The aim is to support the two Universities and provide improved prospects for young people and families to live, work and contribute to the BCP area. The proposals, developed in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, are aligned with BCP Council and Dorset LEP’s economic strategy.

“Crucially, we are committed to do this whilst enabling people to live well, enhancing the environment, achieving biodiversity net gain, and ensuring that the Talbot Heath is fully protected for future generations.”

It is hoped that the Innovation Quarter will help to generate high-quality jobs with full time median earnings estimated to be 34% above the Dorset LEP area average. Overall, studies suggest that the development could create a boost to the local economy in the region of £97M Gross Value Added (GVA) per annum.

It’s time for pre-tax year end planning

Now the Christmas tree is back in the loft, it’s time to think about the year ahead – and perhaps consider some pre-tax year end planning.

For business owners, the age-old question of ‘should I take a bonus or dividend?’ is likely to arise. Unfortunately, the answer is it depends.

Generally speaking, dividends are currently more tax efficient than bonuses. But after April 5, if your company pays Corporation Tax at the 25% rate and the amount you wish to take from the company falls entirely into the additional rate tax band (currently over £150,000, reducing to £125,140 after April 5), there is very little difference tax wise between a bonus and a dividend. In these circumstances, the overall effective tax rates for a dividend and bonus are 51% and 53% respectively in the current tax year, and 55% for both thereafter.

For those who don’t pay employee’s National Insurance, a bonus will be better after April 5, as the NI saving tips the balance. However, whilst the tax position is important, there are other considerations such as cashflow.

Tax on bonuses is deducted at source, whereas tax on dividends is collected via a self-assessment tax return. Therefore, if a dividend is paid at the end of March 2023, the tax is payable by the end of January 2024. However, HMRC will assume that your tax liability will be the same as the current tax year and calculate payments on account accordingly. It is, though, possible to reduce these if income levels are likely to fall.

If you have taken dividends of between £125,140 and £150,000 in the current tax year, topping them up to £150,000 before April could help you keep below the £125,140 threshold next year. The tax saving may just help towards next Christmas.

Rallying cry for positivity as business awards return

Dorset Chamber held its Annual General Meeting on 1st December 2022 at The Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth. Attended exclusively by its members, this annual meeting was an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and the plans for the future.

Dorset Chamber chief executive Ian Girling said at the AGM: “We all know the economic climate looks challenging but as businesses we must keep moving forward with a positive, although not naïve, attitude.

“I want Dorset Chamber to be leading from the front to support our members and the wider business community, and I urge everyone to keep talking business up rather than down.”

AGM 2022

Chamber president Caron Khan was elected for a historic third successive term at the AGM at the Hilton Hotel in Bournemouth – becoming the first person to serve three consecutive years in office.

Caron Khan said: “I truly believe that for the chamber, its members and the Dorset business community at large the future still holds wondrous possibilities if we can work together, support one another and lead the way as the dynamic forward thinking business leaders that we are.”

The AGM voted for Tony Brown to continue as vice-president. Honorary treasurer Stephen Mills – the longest serving board member in chamber’s 70 year history –stepped down after 19 years to be replaced by his fellow Mazars partner Lesley Fox. Long service awards also went to former presidents Paul Tansey and Simon West in recognition of their commitment and support for the chamber over many years.

Dorset businesses support the Festive Foodbank

A Christmas lunch followed the AGM with a raffle raising £1,265 for the Faithworks charity, which helps people affected by homelessness, food poverty, debt, addiction and lone parenting. Guests also donated hundreds of items – including food, socks and toiletries – for the chamber’s Festive Food Bank for Faithworks to distribute across Dorset. Ian Girling said: “Our deepest thanks go to everyone who donated items and prizes, and bought raffle tickets.

An exciting year ahead

Other plans for the year ahead include a Future Leaders Forum for young people under 30, an inclusivity and diversity forum and the Dorset Apprenticeship Awards as well as progression of the county’s Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) and its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) support.

The Business Awards are back

Revamped business awards are set to burst back into life during a three-day festival of business being held by Dorset Chamber in 2023. The new-look Dorset Business Awards were announced at the chamber’s annual general meeting along with a major conference and exhibition over three days in October. For further updates on this, please ensure you’re registered for the Dorset Chamber newsletter.

In business sales, warranties are statements of fact which the seller gives to the buyer in respect of various aspects of the business. If the buyer can show a financial loss as a result of a breach of warranty, they may be entitled to bring a claim against the seller for that loss.

A sensible buyer will almost always carry out due diligence on the target to obtain as much information as possible so that they can identify any areas of concern. In addition to this, the buyer will ask for warranties to be included in the purchase contract and these will very often relate to the key areas raised in the due diligence process.

Warranties should be tailored to the type of the business or the company being purchased but will also typically cover areas such as the financial position of the target, ongoing litigation, the contracts, employees, IT systems, intellectual property and more.

Sellers should think carefully about the warranties they are being asked to give and ensure that nothing could be considered misleading or is inaccurate. Sellers can limit the risk of a claim by making a disclosure. Disclosures are usually drafted in a disclosure letter, which forms part of the main purchase contract. If a matter is disclosed to the buyer before completion, it is likely that the buyer will be precluded from bringing a breach of warranty claim.

Whilst a buyer may feel that they are adequately protected by the warranties, this is not always the case. If there is a breach of warranty, the buyer cannot ‘reverse’ the agreement they have entered into (unless permitted to do so under the purchase contract) and there may be other limitations on the seller’s liability. It is therefore extremely important to ensure that provisions relating to warranties are effectively negotiated. For more on warranties, see the full article which can be found on our website www. frettens.co.uk/site/media-centre/ This topic is expansive and cannot be fully covered in a short column. Five dates for your diary in 2023

I know you are focused on protection every day. But awareness days and national days are a fantastic way to shine the spotlight on specific areas of safety. They get everyone talking about a topic, driving innovation, and opening discussions about making things even safer and better. Tower is focusing on these dates this year:

• 6-12 February – Tinnitus Awareness Week. We’re teaming up with the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) to explain ‘Listen Today, Hear Tomorrow!’, explaining why hearing protection now has the highest classification level of PPE.

• 7-13 March – National Feet Week. The right foot protection can limit musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), which account for 24% of lost working days. Tower’s footwear clinics ensure the right footwear and complementary insole is matched to the wearer’s foot.

• 3-9 May – Sun Awareness Week. Many PPE wearers work outside all day long. But did you know there is an EN standard for UV protection (EN 13758-2)? Workwear that meets the UPF 40+ rating ensures only 1/40 of UV radiation reaches the skin.

• 23 June – Women in Engineering Day. Tower has a range of ladies’ PPE. To be effective, PPE must fit right and not hamper the wearer when going about their job. On this day, we’ll draw attention to the growing options within female-specific PPE.

• 1 August – World Lung Cancer Day. I’m specially trained in the fitting of respirators, and Tower supports ‘Clean Air? Take Care!’, a joint BSIF and HSE initiative to reduce occupational respiratory disease. This day will highlight the need to avoid your workforce suffering illness.

Some honourable mentions for 2023: 7 April – World Healthy Day / 5 May –World Hand Hygiene Day / 15 October – Global Handwashing Day / 14-20 November – Road Safety Week. If you plan to use an awareness day or week to support safety at work, then I can help you do it.

Bournemouth & Poole College event launches Dorset’s Green Skills Hub

Bournemouth & Poole College has officially launched the Dorset Green Skills Hub, a joint partnership initiative with Weymouth College and Skills & Learning Adult Community Education, to drive sustainability across Dorset.

More than £800,000 in government funding has been awarded to Bournemouth & Poole College to deliver free marine and automotive short training courses using cutting-edge equipment. The courses will introduce technicians to electric vehicle and boat engine technologies to ensure that these thriving sectors have the skills to facilitate the growth locally in sustainable, climate-friendly green technologies.

Skills & Learning Adult Community Education will create introductory routes to prime adults to join the green-skilled workforce needed in the future, while the benefit spreads across Dorset with Weymouth College launching a separate project strand.

Phil Sayles, principal at Bournemouth and Poole College, says: “We are delighted to launch the Dorset Green Skills Hub as it is set to deliver one of the key recommendations of the Green Jobs Taskforce, which is ‘no worker should be left behind by the training system.’  “These are essential skills for the rest

of this decade and beyond. The project will allow companies’ engineers and technicians to engage and experiment with these new technologies and help them prepare for the future. These technologies will drive environmental benefits and the economy, and we need to ensure that local people have the skills to use them and will reap the rewards from this work.”

The first series of free one- or twoday courses will run until March 31 2023, and individuals following the automotive course route can achieve a Level 3 Award in electric and hybrid vehicle system repair and replacement. On completion, students will receive a license to work on electric cars. Marine engineers and electricians undertaking the College’s British Marinevalidated marine course in its renowned Marine Engineering Centre will gain a license to work on electric boat engines. www.thecollege.co.uk

Dorset businesses sparkle in strictly-style fundraiser gala

Saturday night saw Dorset businesses sparkle in a Strictly-style fundraiser gala to raise funds to support youth mental health, Parkinson’s dance and many other community dance projects across the region.

Pavilion Dance South West’s Business Come Dancing black tie gala event was back with a bang on 19th November after a 3-year break. As Strictly went to Blackpool, local business contestants took the dance floor by storm at the Highcliff Marriott Hotel in Bournemouth to compete for the Glitterball Trophy!

Attended by over 190 local business people and supporters, the event saw a glittering array of 10 dance performances, including a cheeky Charleston, a tantalising Tango, a rousing Irish Dance, a carnival Afro Fusion performance, a beautiful Bollywood and a

sprinkle of Dirty Dancing. Everyone had the ‘time of their lives’ whilst raising funds for event charity partners Pavilion Dance South West and youth mental health charity #Willdoes.

Pavilion Dance South West were delighted to partner with youth mental health charity #Willdoes, which is dedicated to helping young people achieve wellbeing in Dorset. With standards of dancing so high, it was a tough job for the judging panel Dr Anna Farthing (Director of Civic and Cultural Engagement at AUB), Victor Fung, (Pavilion Dance’s Artistic Director and joint CEO), and Ian Girling, (Chair of DCCI). But all 3 were unanimous in their decision to award the winner’s trophy to Kerry Houston-Kypta from Coles Miller Solicitors dancing with Marek Lynch with a spectacular Argentine Tango!  www.pdsw.org.uk

In

Uncertain economic conditions and unforeseen events can rock the lives and financial foundations of many families. In today’s unsettled climate it’s important to make sure you are best positioned to protect and fully manage your finances.

Tackle Rising Taxation

Taxes are rising and some allowances are to remain frozen for years to come, with others expected to disappear altogether to help begin repaying the government’s mounting debt.

Top tip: Look carefully at how to make the most of the current tax and pension saving options, as by not doing so, many of these tax allowances can so easily go unused and become lost to you forever.

Combat High Inflation

Monthly inflation rates have reached eye-watering levels, and whilst savings rates have increased, they are nowhere near the level to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

Top tip. Explore the ways available to help make your money work harder, diversifying your savings and investments, but be careful, don’t leave yourself open to undue risk.

Protect Family Well-Being: The past couple of years has served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and with it, the need to protect ourselves and those around us to ensure well-being and peace of mind.

Top tip: Check to ensure you have the right levels of life/critical illness protection in place and taking the appropriate measures to preserve your hard-earned assets from the financially devasting impact Inheritance Tax can sometimes have on the legacy you wish to leave to your family.

If any of these 3 points resonate with you, it’s worth taking action today.

Laceys Licensing team scoops ‘Best Support to the Event Industry’ at National Awards

The National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA) held their annual convention and awards Wednesday 23th November at The Pump Rooms and Roman Baths in Bath.

It was the convention’s first return to a live format since pre-pandemic, with industry experts delivering insight and education into the new standards and values that events are looking to follow in 2023 and beyond. As part of this, Philip Day, one of Laceys licensing experts, featured in a live session during the day alongside other industry experts, recreating a modern-day SAG (Safety Advisory Group).

Into the evening, Laceys were honoured to win the award for ‘Best Support to the

Event Industry’ at the awards, the judges’ summed up their decision to give Laceys the award with the following words;

“The judges felt Laceys Solicitors have been vital to so many companies during the pandemic. As a business they provided counsel and advice to customers, the industry and government. Often at their own expense. Over the years, Laceys have been a great supporter to the industry. Congratulations.”

Brendan Herbert, who is both a Licensing Specialist at Laceys and Event Organiser, was also mentioned for being shortlisted in 3 separate categories at the awards but sadly missed out on a win.

Dorset LEP unveils investment guides to boost economic growth

Businesses and investors across the UK and abroad can access a new suite of guides showcasing the potential for millions of pounds’ worth of opportunities to invest in Dorset. The guides highlight more than 50 case studies of transformational business success from Dorset including companies such as Lush and Sunseeker. Each guide covers a specific sector key to the Dorset economy: advanced engineering and manufacturing; agritech; financial services; marine; and digital and creative. They have been produced by the LEP’s Invest in Dorset team, a group of economic development professionals who help clients identify opportunities for growth and expansion in Dorset.

Permeating the guides is a host of economic information about Dorset including the contribution to workplace skills by education providers such as Bournemouth University, Arts University Bournemouth, The Bournemouth & Poole College, Weymouth College and Kingston Maurward College. Invest in Dorset hope to tempt inward investors through the region’s focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) and the apprenticeship and career opportunities supported by the commercialisation of academic research.

On the digital and creative side, Invest in Dorset say more than half of all the graduates working in the UK’s film, visual effects and

video games industries were educated in Dorset. The sector supports more than 12,000 jobs and makes an annual economic contribution of more than half a billion pounds.

On the marine side, the guide writers say Dorset has a quarter of the South West’s marine manufacturing jobs, offering investors substantial scope for research and development opportunities together with a ready supply chain. A key marine investment already under way is the £26 million berth development in Portland Harbour which is expected to attract companies working in activities such as marine autonomous systems.

In the financial services sector, leading brands such as LV, JP Morgan and BNY Mellon are among 1,600 firms together employing more than 14,000 people in Dorset and contributing £1.7 billion to the economy. The sector has seen a 20% growth in Dorset in the past ten years. www.dorsetlep.co.uk

Hi, my name is Laura, and I am the Corporate Fundraiser for Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity. I live in rural North Dorset, and I am mum to three children. When not at work I can be found watching my boys play football for the village teams, or walking my dog in the countryside.

I am looking for more businesses to get involved with supporting the work of Diverse Abilities and there are so many ways to get involved:

Sponsoring one of our events – we host lots of events throughout the year, with plenty of sponsorship opportunities such as our Country Challenge, Golf Day, Rugby Lunch and Gala Ball.

Do Your Own Thing fundraising – you can do anything you like from holding coffee mornings and bake sales, to setting your team challenges – such as walking 10,000 steps a day for a month, a sponsored run, or a danceathon. Other ideas include hosting a quiz, or an ‘Ask an expert’ session to share your skills and knowledge.

Local charity launches new initiative

Local charity Community Action Network is launching their new ‘Business Supporter’ membership for businesses in the Dorset area. A new initiative launched to encourage businesses with a passion for their local community to engage with and support local charities.

CAN invites businesses with a ‘social conscience’ to connect with like-minded businesses, charities / community groups, along with Council and NHS colleagues, who share a vision for Dorset to be a place where strong, healthy, diverse and vibrant communities flourish. www.can100.org

Offering staff time to volunteer –support our fundraising team by helping at events, marshalling, bucket collections or helping to promote the event to your local community. Teams can also get together to visit our properties and carrying out practical jobs such painting and decorating or gardening.

Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more. You can email me at Laura.stanley@ diverseabilities or give me a call on 01202 718266 – let’s go for a coffee and make a partnership that works for you.

Lawyers have teamed up with Brockenhurst Football Club to help it achieve its goals on and off the pitch.

Regional law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors – with offices in Ringwood town centre – has sponsored the New Forest team for the first time.

And it has thrown its support behind one of its own people – legal placement Tomas Baker – to cover his playing costs with New Milton Town FC’s Development Team for the season.

Ellis Jones, with more than 170 staff including 21 Partners, has a well-established sports law department and is a longstanding supporter of local teams.

Nigel Smith, Ellis Jones’ Managing Partner, said: “Brockenhurst is a brilliant example of a football club at the heart of its community.

“We’re proud to offer our support and I hope it can help the club grow

Footballers get ahead of the game with Ellis Jones Changing of the Guard at Composite Profiles UK

100 miles from London, Composite Profiles UK celebrates its own Changing of the Guard, as Mark Norton hands over the ceremonial keys to Joel Nurser, as he steps into the role of Managing Director and takes over the everyday running of the company.

It’s certainly a significant milestone in Composite Profiles’ 30-year history and its journey from a one-room office in Broadstone headed up by Roy Norton, through a 14-year boom under the management of Mark Norton; and to November 2022, when Joel Nurser adeptly took up his position as the New Guard taking over the MD-ship of Composite Profiles.

It’s no surprise that this transition has been in progress for some time. Over the past 17 years, Joel Nurser has worked his way up from Assistant Project Manager to being secondin-command as Operations Director, but more significantly becoming the first and only non-family shareholder in 2019. Joel has helped grow Composite Profiles into a multimillion pound business, completing 1740 projects in the process. Mark Norton was asked, why now?

“My vision is well documented in

our marketing materials, it’s simply ‘to create the highest performing team possible with Building Excellence at our core’ and by appointing Joel, I am literally actioning that vision. I’m really excited by this progressive new direction. Joel will make an excellent MD.  His passion for the sector is unrivalled.  Together with his attention to detail and knowledge, the future looks very strong.”

And what has the new Managing Director, Joel Nurser, got to say?

“I’m very proud and grateful to follow in the footsteps of Roy and Mark, both who have taught me so much. As we look forward to 2023, I feel energised and optimistic about what the future holds for our team, and I am confident that we will use the challenges ahead to improve and build a better future for all. I would like to extend my appreciation and respect to our whole team for their support and trust over the years. Thanks to Mark for preparing me and I look forward to supporting you and the team in our new roles.” www.compositeuk.com

behind the scenes and achieve success on the pitch too.

“We didn’t hesitate to assist Tomas either as part of our ethos of encouraging our people in and outside of the office.”

Partner David McWilliam, Head of Sports Law, added: “We see ourselves as the twelfth man supporting our local sports people and clubs both through sponsorship and our extensive sports law services.”

Brockenhurst, who play at the Meadens Skoda Arena in Grigg Lane, are in the Premier Division of the Wessex Football League.

Chairman Chris Panayi said: “Many thanks to Ellis Jones for its much valued support.

“We’ve had a good start to the season and hope to make the firm proud to be associated with our club.” www.ellisjones.co.uk

The Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) Takes Shape

Dorset has a very specific and ageing workforce that is not big enough currently to meet demand. With an ageing workforce, and rapidly changing skills needs across industries, we need to work together to prioritise and support key sectors and issues.

Launched in November 2022, the Dorset LSIP process intends to pinpoint specific skills gaps by conducting thorough research and capturing your views and concerns.

Using these insights, the Dorset LSIP team will collaborate with sector specialists and providers to co-create a plan to fill those gaps through training or other delivery methods, shared with the Department for Education in May 2023. The Dorset LSIP intends to support Dorset businesses to have the right people doing the right jobs with the right skills. As priorities and technologies change, as do the skills required to adapt to the different demands. The Plan will work to provide appropriate post-16 technical education to meet the skills needs in business – and those on the near horizon such as Net Zero changes.

So, if you run a business or if you have responsibility for a department, skills development – training - or HR, we need your views. It’s only by understanding your specific workforce needs and gaps, that the delivery can adapt to give you what you need. You can take part in the online survey, focus groups, 1:1 session – even just 10 minutes of your time can help shape a plan that accounts for your needs.

Are you ready for Net Zero Targets?

A commitment has been made for the UK to meet Net Zero targets by 2050. To meet this, it is expected many will need training to implement and manage Net Zero targets and green/climate change goals in the next 2-3 years, but understanding the details of what is needed will help providers to plan courses to meet this emerging demand.

Other sectors identified within the region as high need, growth and innovation sectors to focus on have been identified as:

• Agriculture, Agri-tech and Aquaculture

• Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering including Aerospace, Defence and Marine

• Construction

• Digital Tech and Creative

• Health and Social Care Research Company Appointed Poole-based research company, Insightful UX, has been appointed to lead the qualitative and quantitative research for the Local Skills Improvement Plan project by Dorset Chamber, funded by Department for Education. In the coming months they will conduct a series of online, face to face and focus-group led research engagements, to develop and validate research on the skills gaps and challenges faced by Dorset businesses.
