AFTER being out of their earthquakedamaged and now demolished building for more than two years, the management, staff and young residents of Cholmondeley in Governors Bay have come a few steps closer to having their brand-new building.

The design for the new facility, developed by architect Perry Royal of Royal Associates, was released last week.

“We’re pleased with it,” general manager Shane Murdoch said. “A lot of time, thought and research has gone into the design.”

In terms of space, the new building would be largely replacing the footprint of the former Cholmondeley, Mr Murdoch said.

“The key difference, though, is that it will be a single-level building. This was really clear from the children we spoke to that it was what they wanted.”

Two parts of the former building were able to be repaired and refurbished, and these will be incorporated into the new facility, he said.

“A blend of new and old.”

The other key aspect of the Cholmondeley rebuild has been the launch of the capital fundraising campaign on March 10.

“This is a big fundraising year for us,” Mr Murdoch said.

“In addition to funding for the rebuild, we need operational funding, and also funding to cover the relocation costs to Living Springs.”

(Cholmondeley children are currently accommodated at Living Springs, though they return to their Governors Bay site for their day-to-day education and playground activities.)

“The capital campaign was launched to raise $4 million for the rebuild. That’s the gap

between the insurance settlement and the cost of the build. It’s important to get the balance right between the funds we need to raise for our operational costs ($1.2 million) and the new build.”

A large part of the capital campaign would involve approaching supporters of Cholmondeley, including significant trusts, Mr Murdoch said.

A capital campaign committee comprising Kerry Dellaca, Richard Ballantyne and Malcolm Hudson has been set up.

“They are all voluntary – there’s a lot of goodwill there,” Mr Murdoch said.

The timeframe for raising the capital was 2014, and they were aiming for construction to start around September, this year.

“We’re itching to get back,” Mr Murdoch said.

Rare visitors turn on a show

A LARGE pod of Bottlenose dolphins were seen cavorting at the entrance to Akaroa Harbour for the first time in recent memory on March 23.

Black Cat Cruises skipper Chris Jenkins said he could not remember there being any sightings of Bottlenose dolphins in the area before.

“I’ve been working dolphin swimming on the harbour for 14 years and have never seen Bottlenose dolphins here before; it was awesome,” Mr Jenkins said.

“The water was alive with them. They almost dwarfed our dolphin swimming boat - riding the bow of the boat, leaping and generally going off.”

Mr Jenkins said they really moved fast and were much larger than the regular Hector’s dolphins that inhabit the area. He said there were 70 to 80 Bottlenose dolphins, which he thought included mothers and their calves.

“There were all shapes and sizes and we last saw them heading south.”

The group of English cricket supporters, who were in New Zealand to support the England team on their recent tour, raised about $10,000 through a series of events during their visit.

New Zealand tour organiser for the Barmy Army, Giles Wellington, said the group liked to organise charity events to benefit local charities in the countries they visited.

“We visited Christchurch five years ago in 2008 and coming back to Christchurch this time and seeing the devastation, we decided to help with the quake repairs.”

“The day went really well. People were really pleased to see it back again. Everyone was over the moon being able to get up on the hills. They were pleased with what’s been done at the top, too,” he said.

Letter to the editor Improvement to Sumner Village In the February 20, 2013 edition of the Bay Harbour News, a letter to the editor from B F Walklin suggests the lawn and gardens replacing the demolished Community Centre on the corner of Wakefield and Nayland streets are an improvement. While I agree that this is a very good use of this area on a temporary basis, I do not agree that this is the best permanent use for a number of reasons.

1. There is no obvious satisfactory alternative site for the Community Centre.

There are, however, seemingly unending garden, play and picnic areas within a stone’s throw of this area. With time there may be more green area across the road at the Marine Tavern site, which is red zoned.

2. The previously existing Community Centre was a very successful facility of cultural and historical significance. It was a home to amateur singing and acting with the Sumner Theatre Group, local sports groups, museum and war memorial. The adjoining library was also lost in the earthquake.

There is a great history there, which is embedded in the hearts and souls of many.

It has contributed enormously to community

spirit. It would be nice to see that continue for future generations.

3. The Community Centre should be central and in a commercial rather than residential zone in terms of noise (from music, theatre, social events, traffic etc.) i.e. 1am curfew rather than an 11pm curfew.

The current temporary community facilities are in a residential area, are old (were due for demolition before the earthquakes) and are owned by the primary school who understandably want the space back for their own use.

4. There is a danger of losing the Community Centre altogether if the process to replace it becomes too difficult, delayed and distracted. This would be very sad. There is even a risk that this public land could be sold for private use.

In summary, the Sumner Community Centre was a very successful facility lost in the earthquakes. It should be replaced on the same site ASAP and improved if possible and that should be the focus.

THE OK Corral skate park in Redcliffs is proving a huge hit with children from right around the area.

After school and at the weekend, children from Redcliifs, Mt Pleasant, Sumner, and even further afield flock to the site of the former New World supermarket to ride their scooters, skate boards and bikes over the ramps and all around the fenced-off land.

“There are usually around 30 children,” Redcliffs resident Rena Dalley said, who is at the park keeping her eye on activities whenever children are there.

The idea to provide the play area for local children on the empty site was put forward by her husband Reg Dalley. It is the second ‘shed project’ he has been involved with in Redcliffs.

“This is a joint shed-New World initiative and is for the enjoyment of the Redcliffs community, especially the young,” Mr Dalley said.

When they want to try something different, the shrubs and bushes surrounding the site provide another diversion for the children.

“They use the whole area,” Mrs Dalley said.

As word gets around, new children were coming all the time, and there were also regular participants, she said.

A “stable” provides space to store equipment when the park is not being used, and the Christchurch City Council has provided park benches where parents can sit and watch their children.

The OK Corral is open Saturday and Sunday, 2.30pm to 4.30pm and weekdays after school from 3pm-4.30pm.

IT’S Saturday morning in Mt Pleasant, and while hundreds of locals make their way to the bottom of the hill and the local market, there’s also a buzz around the tennis club. Up to 70 children converge on the club (located in The Brae) on a weekly basis to take advantage of the quality coaching available from Prue, supported by Andy and Todd. With three to four groups of children being coached at any one time all levels of ability are Emerging talent: Young players at the club. nurtured, and huge improvements in skills and abilities have been noticed over the summer.

A highlight was the recent round-robin tournament where parents were paired with their children for some fun and competition.

It’s only three years since Helen Deavoll and Kate Stewart rekindled the juniors group at the club. Now the large number of junior players is a real indication of the level of support for local tennis, as is the growth of our emerging talent! We are looking forward to seeing some of these children taking part in competitions next year. Here’s guessing it might not be long before the next generation are giving us all a run for our money. We had better get some of Concentration: Georgia volleys while Annette our own practice in! watches on.

Harvest in the harbour at Lyttelton Farmers Market

Lottie Harris I LOVE this time of year: nature’s swan song before her gradual withdrawal into winter dormancy. It’s a time of beautiful, tasty, colourful abundance and nowhere is it more apparent for me than on a Saturday morning at Lyttelton’s Farmers Market. Of the 35 to 40 regular stall holders more than 10 are local growers offering the very freshest seasonal fruit and vegetables.

It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds!

From juicy corn and sun-drenched tomatoes to succulent blueberries, mouth-watering melons and crisp crunchy apples – inevitably my arms are well and truly aching by the time I’ve trudged back to my house up the hill!

It’s also a time of busy preparation and industrious preservation as those of us with the time and inclination do our best to capture summer’s generosity and bottle it as jams, jellies, chutneys and sauces for the less vibrant winter times ahead. I don’t pretend to be an expert but each year I try my hand at some form of preserving, usually turning out something resembling a passable jam and a halfway decent chutney or two! This year I can’t resist the tomatoes – our wonderful long hot summer has meant bumper crops packed with flavour. With

2T turmeric 5T ground cumin 3T mustard seeds, ground 2 kg tomatoes washed and chopped 2¼c sugar 3T salt Puree ginger, garlic and chilli with a little vinegar. Heat the oil in large pan, add all the spices and fry until fragrant. Add the pureed mixture, tomatoes remaining vinegar, sugar and salt. Cook on low heat stirring occasionally – half hour till oil floats. Bottle into sterilised jars.

Awe-inspiring action in Lyttelton Mary Jamieson MY heart was pounding, I was gasping and yelling and I was only a spectator at the Lyttelton Urban Downhill event on Saturday, March 16.

Those magnificent competitors on their mountain bikes gave the large crowd many awe-inspiring moments.

I was there with the Lions running a sausage sizzle and we had a busy day.

Thank you to all who enjoyed our snags.

The weekend before several members of the club attended a district convention at the Lincoln Events Centre. We caught up with old friends and learnt more about Lions and all their projects. The Events Centre is an amazing building – I want one here in Lyttelton!

We also did a sausage sizzle at Mitre 10 in Ferrymead last month. We really appreciate the way this company provides a barbeque for groups to use for fundraising.

We were pleased to give a donation to the Naval Point Yacht Club juniors to help them attend a regatta in Timaru at Easter.

We were also happy to pay for the diagnostic testing of a Lyttelton Main School student.

Lyttelton Lions are holding a Trivia Night on Sunday, April 28 at 7pm at the Valley Inn, Heathcote. Tickets are $10 each and there will be many prizes.

Tables of four to six can be booked with me at 328 8523. Grab your friends and come along for a fun night and know you will be helping someone in our community.

Life membership for well-known local ornithologist Tanya Jenkins

WHEN local ornithologist and Christchurch City Council Park Ranger Andrew Crossland agreed to be the speaker at the public meeting at Mt Pleasant Yacht Club he received more than a thank you card.

The members of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust were treated to yet another excellent presentation by Andrew last week, and he received many ‘aah’s ‘ and ‘wow’s for his presentation titled ‘The national and international context of our estuary bird species’. Apart from amazing close- up photos of a large number of birds, the data Andrew has collected on numbers of species in the Christchurch estuary, as well as surrounding wetlands and rivers, displayed some 25 years of dedication towards the protection of many national and internationally significant bird species. This data has earned our estuary and surrounding waterways many accolades from around the world, with regard to the outstanding number of bird species inhabiting relatively small areas of wetland.

When the trust discovered that Andrew first presented information on birdlife to the public when he was only 14 years old, it was agreed this man was most deserving of being recognised for his 25-plus years of long hours in evenings, weekends and holidays, standing in all weathers to ensure accurate bird counts were taken for future reference.

Andrew was most surprised to receive a life membership as well as a large framed photo of a flock of godwit birds in recognition of his part played over the last 13 years in the Farewell to the Godwits event held in March each year.

In addition, Andrew was thanked for his sincere passion for the protection of birdlife and his active involvement in seeking protection status for wetland areas in Canterbury. As the leader of the trust’s Charlesworth Wetland Maintenance team, he has inspired and enthused volunteers to spend a few hours of their Sunday planting out, mulching and weeding thousands of tree seedlings in order to preserve and enhance this small but important piece of wetland. The people of Christchurch and the local birdlife owe Andrew many thanks for his work.

Book sale boosts fundraising efforts A STEADY stream of ‘bookworms’ turned up to browse through the hundreds of books on offer at the Redcliffs Library book sale held in the Redcliffs Tennis Club car park on March 23 and 24. In total, 1500 books were sold, raising $4010 for the library, which was a similar amount to that raised last year, a library spokeperson said. The library is fundraising for new premises, to be located on its former Main Road site in Redcliffs. The library also runs a stall at the Saturday morning Mt Pleasant Farmers Market.

Stop the hooligans HI there. Well, we’re into April and the weather is still fantastic, it’s great to see everyone out and about enjoying themselves, unfortunately some of the rat bags out there are enjoying themselves at the expense of our community.

The Sumner Village green was damaged on Friday, March 22, by some idiots who thought that all the hard work put into this area by residents and council was not of value. It is mindless vandalism like this that gets my goat up. If you see damage being done to property please ring police on 111 - we want to stop these hooligans in their tracks.

We are also getting reports of crime, including cars being broken into, rubbish fires being lit on the roadway and graffiti around the Martindale’s Road and Port Hills Road area, we have a good idea who the suspects are but need evidence to charge them, so if you see something dodgy happening, once again please ring 111 at the time as we may have a dog unit available to track the offenders and catch them. Constable Kitchin the CLO for this area is happy to be contacted on 378 0200 if you have any information re crimes or offenders in the Heathcote/Mount Pleasant area.

I get the impression from some residents that they do not wish to bother Police over what they see as minor crime. From my perspective I want all offending reported to Police.

If it’s happening at the time ring 111, if it’s historic ring the Crime Reporting Line on 363 7400. Whilst we may not attend all crimes reported as we prioritise our response to demand, it’s important that we know what crime is happening where, then we can put our resources into these areas as and when required.

As mentioned in my previous article our area has four constables assigned to Community Liaison - Constable Walker, Lyttelton, S/Const Bouma, Corsair Bay through to Port Levy, S/ Const Wearne, Sumner and Redcliffs, and finally Constable Kitchin in Mount Pleasant and Heathcote. If you see them on the beat, stop and introduce yourselves; if you have a problem, they will be happy to discuss this with you. I cannot promise we will always resolve every issue but we will do our best.

They can be contacted 378 0200. The Community Liaison Officers are not here 24/7 and do have days off, but if you leave a message we will get back to you. Once again I must stress if it’s a crime that’s historic, or happening at the time, follow my advice as outlined earlier in this article and our response staff from Christchurch will be tasked to attend.

WHAT do you get if you cross 200 orange road cones, some hi-viz clothing, hard hats, stop watches, and 40 two-wheeled vehicles? No, it’s not the Ferrymead Bridge construction - it’s Scooter Racing at Mt Pleasant School.

Friday Night On The Hill (a regular social fixture at the school) got a whole lot more competitive recently when Scooter Time Trials were set up. Racers ranging in age from three to 53 took part, over a gnarly course that included hills, ramps, steps, sandpits and water sprinklers. Each racer in each age group was timed, and the winners were awarded a great selection of prizes from generous local businesses.

The evening was enjoyed by many families, who set up picnics along the course to watch the action.

With only a handful of minor injuries (mainly to grown-ups!), the evening was a resounding success, with calls for re-trials to be held at a later date.

RISING to a new challenge recently were three year 8 pupils from Little River School, who competed in the New Zealand Schools Triathlon National Championships held at Pegasus Town on Thursday, March 21.

Their course was a 150m swim in Little Lake Pegasus followed by an 8km bike around the Pegasus Town streets with a fast 1.6km run to the finish line.

Congratulations to Angus Latham, Lucinda Hutchinson and Matthew White for stepping up to this challenge and taking the opportunity to stand tall.

The students were thrilled they had taken part, despite the effort required.

“I was desperate for sleep last night, but my aching body kept me awake!,” Matthew said. “I think we did very well for this level of competition.

The Nationals course was more exciting than Canterbury Zone. It was more technical riding on the bike.”

Lucinda was happy with her run.

“The event was very well organised. It was really good that we didn’t have to wait to enter the water. There will be a next time for me, it was fun and I want to improve my placing. I love being competitive it makes me feel confident. I passed

a boy on the bike, and shouted “chicked!” He replied, ‘damn it!’.”

“I was almost last in the swim,” Angus said. “It went bad for me, it was a battle, but I caught up heaps on the bike.

“I am pleased with my run too, I River worked hard to pass a group late in the run and was running away from their shadows, when I turned to check where they were, they were well back. That felt good.Next time I want to improve in the swim.”

Teacher John Fitch said having pupils competing at a national championship level was a first for Little River School.

“We’re very proud of them,” he said.

Principal Christian Couper said competing at nationals was a terrific experience for the students.

“These three are great role models for other pupils who aspire to represent their school at high levels.

“The athletes, their families and coaches are to be congratulated for their commitment to spending the time preparing themselves for this event.”

Music and poetry to feature at Wunderbar gig KAPITI-based song and spoken word troupe Waiata and the Word and its offshoot rock band Raumati Straights will be performing at the Wunderbar in Lyttelton this Saturday, April 6.

It will be their second-to-last gig on an 11-day South Island tour, which kicked off in St Peter’s Hall, Paekakariki, on March 28.

Waiata and the Word’s musical styles range from jazz and rock to reggae and folk, with original songs by Troy Hunt (guitar, vocals), Phill Simmonds (mandolin, vocals), Sigrid Woolloff (guitar, vocals), Nigel Patterson (trumpet, clarinet, harmonica, tin whistle, vocals), Paul “Boggy” Bognuda (saxophone, base, spoken word), and poems by Lindsay Rabbitt (spoken word), anchored by Tim Jaray (bass) and Luther Hunt (drums, guitar, vocals).

“We did a small tour of the top of the South Island in 2010,” troupe member Lindsay Rabbitt said, “and our young

drummer Luther Hunt (of Jomba fame) was sitting a college music exam and couldn’t make it. Now he’s studying at the New Zealand School of Music, and he’s been given leave with the blessings of his tutors, which we’re pleased about.

As well as his obvious drumming skills, Luther is also a very talented singer/songwriter and guitarist.

“Unfortunately, our mandolin player Phill Simmonds can’t make the tour due to work obligations, although he will be with us in spirit, as we will be performing his songs.”

Bass player Tim Jaray will join the troupe for the last three “port” shows – Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Picton.

Rabbitt said he was looking forward to performing with a fellow performance poet and a talented young rapper/ singer; visiting the West Coast where he, Luther and his father Troy, haven’t set foot, and playing three of the Mainland’s ports. “Nine gigs in 11 days… Bring it on!”

THE Sumner Art Window, which held its first exhibition in February, has been set up to give something back to the community and also to help encourage artists to stay in Christchurch, project manager for the space Nikki WallaceBell says.

The not-for-profit, privately funded initiative was inspired by the Gap Filler project in Christchurch, Wallace-Bell said.

A new exhibition of artworks is launched on the first Friday of every month and they can be viewed any time, day or night, through the street-front window of a two-storey wooden building, which is located on Mariner Street, opposite the Hollywood Theatre.

“We have exhibitors booked in for the whole year. They are all emerging artists or established artists. Our focus is on contemporary art and there will be a diverse range of exhibitions, with art, sculpture, film,

photography, installation and performance art. It’s art that’s a reflection of our time,” Wallace-Bell said.

“We launch each exhibition with a party on the first Friday of the month, between 5.30pm and 7.30pm and everyone’s welcome.”

The exhibition being launched this Friday, April 5, entitled ‘Whatever comes up – comes out’, features works by Jacob (yikes) Ryan.

He has been involved in the Christchurch graffiti scene since 2005 and has collaborated with many artists living in the city.

Known as Jacobyikes, the artist works in a range of artistic fields including design and illustration, acrylic and mixed media paintings and larger aerosol-based works. Many of his works were destroyed in the earthquakes and since then he has been involved with bringing public art back to the city.

His exhibition will run from April 5-28.

WORKS from some of New Zealand’s finest artists alongside up and coming talent will be showcased at the Peninsula Art Auction being held later this month at the former supermarket premises in London Street, Lyttelton.

The popular event is back for the fifth time and will include works from more than 50 of the finest artists on the peninsula, with Lyttelton schools again to be the beneficiaries.

A rare event, it brings artists with connections to the peninsula, such as Bill Hammond, Neil Dawson, Mark Whyte, Jason Grieg, Gill Hay, Asher Newberry, Helen Taylor and James Robinson, into an intimate and familiar setting.

“The owners of the supermarket have generously offered this incredible, minimalist space that will be a fantastic site for the Peninsula Art Auction,” one of the event organisers Lucie Ozanne said.

“The wonderful thing about this auction is that all the money raised benefits the two primary schools in Lyttelton. It is a great way for people to get a chance to buy a wonderful piece of art for a good price and also support the children of Lyttelton.”

As in previous years, the auction will be a community event with generous support already being provided by Portico, Coastal Living, Peek Exhibition, The Lyttelton Coffee Company, Coffee Culture, Lyttelton Farmers Market and

the owners of the supermarket space.

The school children are also excited about the event and have been asked to create artworks depicting flora and fauna of Banks Peninsula to display, and to sell lemonade during the event.

“It is exciting to see the Lyttelton community come together for the Peninsula Art Auction,” principal of Lyttelton West School Diana Feary said.

“The reputation of this event is legendary, and I am very much looking forward to being a part of it all. I am impressed with the generosity of all involved, in time and in expertise. Apart from the obvious benefit of fundraising, the joint focus for the benefit and wellbeing of the community is outstanding. Congratulations to all involved!”

The artworks can be viewed all weekend, Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 at 19 London Steet with entrance by gold coin donation. On the Sunday at 7pm a silent auction will be combined with a live auction. Tickets for the live auction are $35 and will be available from Portico, Lyttelton West and Main Schools, and the Lyttelton Farmer’s Market. Women surf the waves

THE Tubular Belles annual Canterbury Women’s Surfing Championships held recently at New Brighton beach attracted over 40 entries. Jessica Schaap catches up with a couple of the winners to find out why they like surfing and what the opportunities for women surfers in Christchurch are like.

JULIE Sparrow, 34, from New Brighton, took two prizes coming first in the senior and long board sections.

She began surfing in 2006, after she stopped horse riding, surfing mostly at Sumner but also at New Brighton.

“I’ve always loved swimming and I’ve always loved the ocean.

“Probably the main reason I like surfing is the feeling of freedom. I love being in the ocean and also after a busy day at work you always come out feeling better than when you went in.”

Ms Sparrow is an English language teacher and is the president of Tubular Belles. She joined the club as it gave her a chance to surf with other females.

“I joined that back in 2006 when I first started surfing and at that point I didn’t know any other women surfers. It’s a chance to meet other girls with similar interests and have fun together.”

Alethea Lock, 19, came first in the Tubular Belles junior and open sections. She began surfing because her father, Aaron Lock, runs a surf school in Sumner.

She normally surfs in Dunedin, where she studies psychology, but when in Christchurch she surfs at Taylors Mistake.

“I love it. It’s a great way to have a break from school.”

Miss Lock has a couple of friends she surfs with regularly and is also part of the Point Surf Team.

She has entered many competitions including the junior world champs in Panama and she came

second in the 2011 National Scholastic Surfing Championships, under 18s.

She said there are increasing opportunities for women surfers such as Tubular Belles, which attracted interest from “so many under-14s”.

“I think it is just a cool lifestyle and everyone is starting to see that. It’s got a good vibe about it.”

20 minutes as Bays dominated the half.

The second half was a bit tighter as Nomads worked to get back into the game.

They were thwarted, though, as Adam Highfield pulled off an important save before Kamo wrapped up the points with a curling shot late in the game.

Braithwaite said it was good to get off to a winning start, but he was happier with the way the team played as a whole.

Bays followed up with two games over the Easter holidays. Firstly a game against FC Twenty 11 on Good Friday at ASB Park, before the team travelled to Nelson on Easter Monday for a difficult game against Nelson Suburbs.

Bays’ next home game at Barnett Park is on Saturday, April 6 against Coastal Spirit.

MOUNT Pleasant student Sophie Evans has a difficult decision to make – whether to represent New Zealand in the triathlon or duathlon.

Sophie came first in the National Sprint Triathlon Championships this year for the 18-19 age group. This qualified her for the World Triathlon Championships in London in September for the under-19 age group.

She did not expect to win as she had just come out of a cast after falling off her bike. She kept Sophie Evans, 17, at the World swimming and used a wind bike trainer but she Committed: Triathlon Championships in Auckland last year. had to work to get her cycling ability back up.

“I’m determined to do my best and I push myself. I love the thrill of racing,” she said.

After winning nationals in her age group last year she also qualified for the World Duathlon Championships in Canada to be held in August.

Although she is unsure which event she will compete in she thinks she might go for the triathlon as she has family in London.

She qualified once before when it was held in Auckland but did not place.

“I hope to gain a place this time,” she said.

Both events cost $6000, which she has to raise herself with part-time work and sponsorship.

Sophie gets up four mornings a week before Trevor Crowe’s been involved with cars for a while. You can benefit from high school to swim from 5.30am-7am and his experience at... after school she does her homework, works and practises running and cycling.

She doesn’t mind not getting time to herself, she said.

“I like being busy.”

Bays seniors start campaign with a win FERRYMEAD Bays senior 1st team began their 2013 Mainland Premier League campaign on Saturday, March 23, playing Nomads United at ASB Football Park.

Bays have lost a couple of players from last season’s successful squad, but coach Mick Braithwaite has signed four new players, and three of those made their debuts.
