Passionate drummers: Members of the Takumi Japanese drum group performing at the 2012 Drum Festival at Little River.

THE Little River campground will again echo to the sounds of drum and percussion during the second running of the Drum Festival later this month.

Celebrating rhythm, beat and dance from around the globe, the festival will include performance, workshops, campfire jams and dance workshops. Takumi Japanese drum group, Doug Brush percussion, Mark Zonka and Joseph Chittongo are some of the acts taking part. They will perform rhythms from Africa, the Middle East, South America as well as contemporary drum circle jams.

Held in the native habitat of Manaia at the campground, the programme will be a moving progression of concerts with different groups performing in locations in the bush, beside the river, under the trees and around the campfire.

The festival has been made possible by a grant from Creative Communities.

It will start at midday on Saturday, January 26 and close at 3pm on Sunday January 27. The area has camping facilities for those wishing to stay overnight. Tickets are available at Eventfinder.co.nz or at the gate. They are $20 per day or $40 for the weekend.

(This project will complement other community consultation regarding the new civic square’s final design).

the original contract to develop a new bridge design. They have also undertaken work on temporary infrastructure, diverting wastewater, power and water supply on to the temporary bridges and the approach roads,” she said.

“Their history on the project also brings an understanding of the importance of communicating with the council and the community. We will certainly be keeping in touch with affected residents.”

Traffic management plans will be in place to slow traffic to 30km on the temporary bridges.

Drivers are asked to build this delay into their anticipated travelling times.

The revised estimate to complete the project is $34.87 million. New Zealand Transport Agency will contribute $22.12 million.

NZTA southern regional director Jim Harland said the agency’s significant funding contribution recognised the important role of the Ferrymead Bridge and the route in connecting the eastern suburbs, particularly as a lifeline route for these residents.

The majority of the cost increases on the November 2011 estimate of $17.99 million relate to the change in design to address ground conditions at Ferrymead. As a result of the earthquakes, design standards for structures and buildings have increased, which has resulted in the foundations for the new bridge having to be strengthened to meet these new standards, Ms Davis said.

THE contract for the construction of a new Ferrymead Bridge was awarded last month to HEB Construction Limited. Work will begin in the coming weeks.

Traffic will be diverted to the temporary bridges on either side of the present bridge later this month. Each temporary bridge will carry two lanes of traffic in a single direction.

Completion of the new bridge is likely to be by mid-2015, but timeframes may have to be adapted if unexpected ground conditions for piling are encountered. The demolition of the existing bridge will begin at the beginning of next month and should be completed by early May. The piling process for the new bridge will take about a year and commence as soon as the existing bridge is demolished.

Christchurch City Council acting transport and greenspace manager Sally Davis said HEB Construction Limited would bring extensive experience to the project. Awarding them the contract for the next stage of the project would minimise the time it took to begin work, she said.

“HEB Construction Limited was originally awarded the contract to widen and strengthen the existing bridge prior to the Canterbury earthquakes and began work in August 2010. The project was interrupted when the bridge sustained major damage during the earthquakes.

DRIVERS not adjusting to Christchurch’s post-earthquake road conditions has resulted in greater need for car repairs, according to local car mechanics.

Fitzgerald Avenue Pit Stop mechanic Walter Smith said about six months after the Christchurch 2010/2011 earthquakes he noticed an increase of about 50 per cent more repairs for suspension and panel work underneath cars but this gradually got less.

He said the reason for this was motorists not driving to conditions.

“If people really drove to the conditions they wouldn’t have half the problems,” he said.

The problem was not as bad as it used to be but he had noticed there was still an increase in car repairs due to the road works.

He recommended motorists did not speed and had their vehicles serviced often.

Woolston resident Samara Tribe had her car’s shock absorbers replaced a few weeks ago. Although it was a 1990 car it was in good

condition when she bought it in November 2011 but she noticed it quickly deteriorated.

She said she had been driving to the speed limits and had driven a lot in affected areas such as Bexley and Brighton.

“When I got it [the car], it was fine.

“I was doing 30kph in a 30kkph zone and I was still managing to hit potholes. I started to notice that it was getting worse.

“Our family home is in Woolston and my Mum had been driving around normally and she even had to get her shocks replaced.”

According to Wayne Crabbe from Edgeware Automotive, shocks last longer if the roads are in good condition, which is typically about 150,000kms.

“We are definitely selling more shock absorbers, ball joint and CV joints,” he said.

The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) is responsible for rebuilding the city’s infrastructure following the earthquakes.

SCIRT plans to have the roads fixed within five years.

The Christchurch City Council’s general manager city environment Jane Parfitt said there were more complaints about the roads in Christchurch due to the earthquakes.

“We are asking people to be patient as the permanent repairs have been programmed, together with wastewater and storm water repairs, over an extended period.

“All road users are asked to exercise patience and caution during our rebuild process.”

The council advised people to drive to the conditions and take extra care in areas of road construction and repair.

“Be aware that cyclists may not be able to keep as far left as normal, observe speed limits and temporary speed limits, look ahead for obstacles on the roads, allow extra time for the possibility of detours or heavy traffic and be alert for pedestrians walking on the road.”

Canterbury buoys get revamped for summer ENVIRONMENT Canterbury’s recreational boating officer Evan Walker spent four days in December maintaining the navigation buoys around the Canterbury region in readiness for the summer boating season.

Buoys, along with signs, were an important way to give advice to the boating public, Mr Walker said.

“They educate the public about the local and national boating safety rules. They mark speed limits, particularly where the five-knot speed limit applies, ski lanes and various reserved areas for example where no power boats are allowed.

“Maintenance involves lifting and cleaning the buoys and their moorings as well as replacing worn or corroded components annually. We monitor them regularly and fix the buoys if they have been moved, damaged or are heavily weeded,” Mr Walker said.

There are 175 buoys to be maintained in total in the Canterbury region - 30 in Akaroa Harbour, 33 in Lyttelton Harbour, 82 in the Waitaki Lakes and another 30 in other areas.

Environment Canterbury gets requests to put more buoys in and boaties find them useful, but it is an offence to interfere with the buoys or cut too close to them, Mr Walker said. They have wire or chain moorings so if boats go too close they will damage their propeller.

Buoys are an important navigational device and are there to ensure boating safety for all.

Funding boost for marine search and rescue facilities MARINE search and rescue facilities damaged in the earthquakes received a grant of $364,000 from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust in December. These facilities serve most of Canterbury’s coastline from Kaikoura to Timaru and along the Waimakariri River.

Coastguard’s Sumner Lifeboat Institution received $50,000 to extend its slipway so it can launch its primary water rescue vessel at low tide, after the earthquakes changed the topography of the coastline.

Coastguard Waimakariri-Ashley received the final $314,000 it needs to construct new $1.1 million premises on the Kaiapoi River that were damaged beyond repair in the September 2010 earthquake.

Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trustee Dr Rod Carr said trustees supported both these voluntary organisations because they provided an invaluable service to Canterbury by saving lives on the water. “It made sense to grant the final funds

needed by Coastguard WaimakaririAshley to build their premises, and to help Sumner Lifeboat build a new slipway, so that both can continue to carry out marine search and rescue,” he said.

Marine search and rescue for the entire Canterbury region is provided

by Coastguard Units at WaimakaririAshley and Sumner along with four other Coastguard units.

New Zealand’s 15,000 kilometres of coastline is a workplace and playground for many New Zealanders and the Coastguard is often the only means of rescue when things go wrong.

Coastguard’s Sumner Lifeboat Institution spokesperson Nick Carter said the launching and retrieval of rescue vessels had been problematic due to the lack of clear water at low tides, which had impacted on the organisation’s efficiency in the carrying out of rescues.

“The Canterbury earthquakes have also changed the topography of the coast around Sumner, and

currently key rescue boats cannot be efficiently launched 90 minutes either side of low tide, causing potentially disastrous delays for rescue operations.

Water restrictions in place for Akaroa LEVEL-one water restrictions were introduced in Akaroa in December by the Christchurch City Council, applying to both residents and visitors.

The restrictions mean people with oddnumbered street addresses can water outdoors on odd-numbered days, and those with evennumbered street addresses can water outdoors on even-numbered days.

Council city water and waste manager Mark Christison said with more and more holidaymakers heading to Akaroa over summer, a huge seasonal strain was placed on the town’s stream-fed water supply.

“Akaroa locals are used to water restrictions – it’s second nature for them at this time of year. However, those who spend their holidays in the area also need to be aware of the restrictions, be responsible and conserve water as much as possible,” he said.

Water restrictions in Akaroa are likely to be lifted in March or April, as visitor numbers

decrease and cooler weather returns.

The water restrictions apply to Akaroa, but Banks Peninsula residents and visitors are asked to conserve water in general and be mindful of water use when washing cars and boats and irrigating gardens.

Mr Christison said the council was monitoring water levels on Banks Peninsula and, as with other years, it is possible the level of restriction will need to be increased at some stage. Any changes will be advertised on signs in Akaroa, through public notices in newspapers and on the council’s website.

“We’re also asking Christchurch residents to keep up the great effort made last summer and to use water sensibly when watering the garden.

“While 12 months of hard work repairing water pipes, wells and pumps means Christchurch’s infrastructure is in a much better state than this time last year we all need to be sensible in our use of water in the garden,” Mr Christison said.

Valuable service The value of the Coastguard service to the community was demonstrated when Peter Deefholts was rescued. Mr Deefholts was washed out to sea while he was fishing at the WaimakaririAshley river mouth. Fishermen on the bank saw what happened and immediately dialled 111. The Police then tasked Coastguard volunteers to respond. Within six minutes a full crew of Coastguard Waimakariri-Ashley volunteers launched the rescue vessel from their base on the Kaiapoi River and were on their way to rescue him.

Within half an hour he had been pulled from the water 300 metres offshore and a kilometre north of where he was swept into the sea.

Following his rescue, Mr Deefholts said: “I am now a whole lot wiser and eternally grateful for the Coastguard. I am acutely aware of just how dangerous our coastline can be, and how important the Coastguard is to keeping us all safe.”

Minutes were vital in the rescue, so having the Coastguard building located beside the water and within easy reach of local volunteers made the difference.

Book captures spirit of Heathcote community

WHEN Drina Sisarich and Ian McLeod moved into Heathcote Valley six years ago, they felt it to be like a homecoming: they were welcomed, settled in quickly and promptly became involved with writing newsletters for the residents’ association. In the course of this, they uncovered many old photographs of the valley, and the idea to record for future generations “the bold and the beautiful, the massive to the miniscule and the sublime to the ridiculous” was born. This record has just been published by the aptly named Epicentre Press. Just in Time contains over 400 photos taken by Drina and Ian from Heathcote, Horatane and Avoca valleys, accompanied by a sparse but wry text.

As promised, few items of interest have been spared. The book includes such diverse subjects as the market gardens of Horatane Valley, the restored cottages, homesteads and examples of art deco architecture, unique gates, garden sculptures

and letter boxes, community events such as the Anzac dawn parades, Christmas pensioners’ dinner and St Mary’s 150th celebrations, as well as some of the local birdlife. Interspersed are new perspectives on familiar landscapes, and features on local artists, gardeners, young people and the local handicrafts group. Even for residents of the valley there are bound to be some surprising discoveries, such as the collections of classic cars in varying states of restoration in local sheds and garages, and the only photo I have yet seen of the quake-struck toilet underneath the keep of Castle Rock. Poignant photos of the café, gift shop and tofu shop on Station Road are included, and less poignant but still memorable visions of the graffiti on the old maltworks buildings are dealt with deftly – “those silent creatures who slip into the ruins…and spray their brilliant designs over the drab and deserted walls where only the pigeons and rats bear witness to their deeds”.

There are admittedly no shortage of books on the effects of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes on Christchurch’s visual landscape and heritage, but Just in Time is not simply another stereotyped before/after compilation. In depicting the many different faces of a small local community – some of the faces remain, but many are no longer visible – Drina and Ian have not only captured what was lost, but also something of the vitality and creativity that remains in the valley. Trust moves to new location Victoria Keene A NEW year and a new location for the Ihutai Trust! As many of you will be aware, the trust has had a temporary office for the past nearly two years based out of a trust member’s shared home office. Since the February 22 earthquake made our office at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre too dangerous to stay in (and subsequently demolished in May 2012) we have been very lucky to have been able to base ourselves in the comfort of Tanya’s home.

This year, our office will be at the Southshore Community House at 47 Rocking Horse Road.

We will be sharing a space with a dynamic

community of people and with a perspective from that side of the Estuary.

I personally want to thank Tanya and her various family and friends for their hospitality over the past two years. I will miss the daily ins and outs and conversations (and special mention to Molly the dog for her unique company!).

Paula Smith THE Lyttelton Master Plan was the big milestone for our community during 2012.

Many people that became involved in the process of planning for the new Lyttelton will watch with interest as the 31 actions identified in the plan are implemented over the months ahead. There will be more opportunities for local people to be involved in the different actions, and we urge everyone to stay involved.

Council backed Lyttelton’s social and economic recovery by purchasing the land for a new civic square. Development of the square will be crucial in redefining the character of our port town so we expect great interest in the design process as it rolls out.

The Lyttelton/Mt Herbert Community Board awaits news of talks between all the agencies involved in port infrastructure recovery planning. We are hopeful that progress will be made on the long-held community aspiration to reconnect the town with its waterfront by opening up disused wharves for public access and by re-routing the ever-growing volume of road freight along Norwich Quay. Road freight effectively severs the community from the water’s edge and makes access to

the public transport network unpleasant and even dangerous in places.

The community board is looking forward to working with the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust to make progress on the Head to Head Walkway, a proposed coastal track right around Lyttelton Harbour from Godley Head to Adderley Head. Three sections already exist: Lyttelton to Cass Bay, Governors Bay to Allandale and Charteris Bay to Purau. We look forward to the day when the three sections are all linked up and can provide a great two or three-day journey with lots of different experiences for both locals and visitors.

Lyttelton/Mt Herbert Community Board wishes everyone a safe and happy summer holiday. If in town we urge you to take a trip to Diamond Harbour to enjoy the sculpture trail on Stoddart Point, perhaps on a Sunday when you can enjoy live music for free in the nowdemolished Godley House. Excellence an expectation at Mt Pleasant market MT PLEASANT Farmers Market is open every Saturday morning at McCormacks Bay. This year we are moving into an exciting new era as plans for the new community centre are being developed. The squash club is always open and very popular. We approach our 100th market in succession with pride and the conviction that we won’t be beaten and will always be there for the community. Weather, earthquakes, road closures, new water supplies and new sewers did not and will not stop us.

We strive for excellent-quality local produce from quality traders brought to our doorstep.

All our traders are locals and the produce is local where possible. Some oranges are sourced from the North Island, our smoked salmon comes from Stewart Island, some of the fish is from Greymouth and we do have organic bananas from overseas. Spices, in the home baking, come from overseas and our free trade organic coffee is also sourced offshore.

Service and quality are paramount.

Humour

Our musicians are booked months in advance, such is the popularity of the market. One musician, I shall save her blushes, attempted to book a slot. At first she was unable to find a mutually convenient date. Finally she got a booking at the MPFM at very short notice.

Alarm bells started ringing when they said it was their last market for a while. She finally realised she had a booking to perform at the Mt Pleasant farmers market in Washington DC, USA.

2012 highlights

team. He went on to become the county champion for Dunbartonshire and took third place in the Scottish junior cross-country national championships in 1957.

A builder by trade, Dave immigrated to New Zealand with his wife and young family in 1961. The reason for leaving Scotland was simple – the weather. His first job was in Ashburton, where he also raced against one of New Zealand’s most well-known athletes – Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dick Taylor.

“I raced against him but I couldn’t beat him.”

Dave and his family moved to Christchurch in 1965, where he set up his own building company – and carried on running.

“It would drive me silly if I couldn’t run,” he says.

He has even competed in events while overseas on holiday. In the early 1990s, when holidaying in Scotland, he took fifth place in the Scottish Road Championship. During one of his regular trips with his wife in 2003 they stopped in San Diego on a trans-US trip, where he entered a 10km run, “for fun”, and won his age category.

In 2009, he and his wife joined 37,000 other runners for the Paris Marathon.

Here at home, he says, he has competed in a lot of half marathons, winning the New Zealand half marathon in his age group in 2008.

“It [winning] gets easier as you get older because there are not so many competing against you,” he laughs.

In February last year, he and a friend took part in the Speights Coast to Coast with Dave doing the mountain run and bike ride into Christchurch.

“We won our age category and got a good write-up in the paper, as I was the oldest competitor.”

Victory for Sumner water polo team Robyn Brailsford

IT was another outstanding victory for the Sumner Water Polo A Team as they played off in the Christchurch term final for 2012.

The team consistently vied for first or second place during the year against their fierce opponents Cobham A. This game was no different, and as it came down to the final moments it was edge-of-your-seat viewing with the score locked at two-all.

The teams then went into extra time for a playoff – first goal wins – with much anticipation and excitement as they battled it out for the victory goal, which eventually was scored by Sumner.

completed an exciting year for this team, which had also received the bronze medal for the South Island Championships, especially for the seniors, as they were in the final days of their time at Sumner School with high school coming up this year.

As seniors in the school these enthusiastic young sports people have passed on a lasting legacy to other water polo players coming up through the school. Under the most trying of circumstances over the past two years, given the earthquakes and loss of many swimming facilities in Christchurch, these students and their parents never gave up their determination to continue and succeed.

BONKING - in cycling lingo, it refers to hitting the wall or the condition caused by depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by sudden fatigue and loss of energy.

“Bonking?” or “Have you bonked recently?” are questions I’ve wanted to ask other cyclists, after a client recently experienced ‘the bonk’, which got me thinking.

Further discussion and rumination established that bonking is something that the majority must first experience to subsequently avoid at all costs.

I recall my first experience of this sensation as an enthusiastic 16 year-old on an early expedition mountain biking to the far off Port Hills (everything seemed so much further in those youthful days).

Back then the last five kilometres must have seemed too much to ask for my glycogen

depleted stores and I bartered my bicycle pump for a Bumper bar (teenager with hunger but no money) at a Blenheim Road petrol station.

I must have appeared fairly depleted to have successfully completed that transaction.

After retrieving my pump (and paying for the bar) I put my learning experience into practice - I now travel with a spare nutbar in my saddle bag and extra change in my back pocket - life savers on many subsequent occasions!

I’m often telling clients that these items require very little space and have negligible effect on your gross weight. SEVERAL thousand people headed to the streets of Sumner to join in the street party on Sunday, May 6. Local resident Marnie Kent estimated there were about 3000 to 4000 there at the peak – around midday. “It was chocker, a great turnout,” she said. “People came from all over Christchurch

– Ilam, Bryndwr, Lyttelton – the vibe was awesome.” There was lots of entertainment and great food, she said. The children had great fun on their skateboards and colouring in the container-size canvas.

“It felt good, like Sumner had a whole new facelift,” Ms Kent said.

WORLD-renowned and much-loved children’s author Margaret Mahy died in July.

She is missed in countless ways, not the least of which as the judge of a local children’s poetry competition. She is pictured enjoying proceedings at the 2011 prize giving for the annual poetry competition that carries her name.
