Happy faces: Heathcote Valley Playcentre children were delighted to welcome their red-suited visitor last Wednesday.

THE children from the Heathcote Valley Playcentre didn’t miss out on their visit from Santa this year, even though they are currently out of their Bridle Path Road building and located in temporary premises at the Wainoni Playcentre on Avonside Drive. The children had an exciting morning last Wednesday, with activities including a visit from a clown before Santa turned up to spread some Christmas cheer and hand out gifts. The playcentre’s Heathcote building suffered extensively in the Canterbury earthquakes. It fell apart in the September quake, underwent extensive repair work, only to suffer further

significant damage on February 22 after reopening just one week earlier, centre coordinator Fiona Vetcher said. While they were pleased to have the use of the Avonside Drive premises, they hoped to get back to the valley, Mr Vetcher said, “We would like to lease some land in Heathcote and we may be able to relocate a building that’s in Dallington.” Many of their original families had moved out of the area and they hoped to attract new families from the Heathcote Valley Playcentre’s catchment area, even before they moved back.

Committee member Marlene Van de Bent said before the earthquake the playcentre had a very long waiting list of families from Sumner, Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant, Heathcote and Lyttelton areas wanting to attend. The centre was operating five days a week with over 100 children attending. At Wainoni the centre operates three days with 50 children attending, she said “Unfortunately our numbers have dropped dramatically since February and we would like to let young families in the catchment area know that we are up and running, still having lots of fun, and not too far away in Wainoni.”

Chaplain Rob Thomson, RNZNVR, Padre of HMNZS Pegasus led the annual Navy Memorial Commemorative Service held at HMNZS Pegasus on Sunday. Paying tribute to all lost sailors, the service remembered in particular the 765 officers and men killed aboard HMS Neptune. Intended as the newly formed Royal New Zealand Navy’s third cruiser, Neptune was sunk by mines off the coast of Tripoli on December 19, 1941, the sole survivor becoming a prisoner of war. One hundred and fifty New Zealanders died in what became this country’s single largest loss of life in World War 2. Sunday’s service was attended by retired and serving navy personnel, Sea cadets from training ships Cornwell and Steadfast, and members of the public.

Akaroa Service Centre closed

Exceptional savings on these

THE Akaroa Service Centre has closed until further notice – but plans are being put in place for a temporary facility across the road. The decision to close the facility was made after Christchurch City Council received the results of a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE). Engineers have recommended the building needs earthquake repairs and strengthening. The building was assessed after the February earthquake and received a green placard. However, the council is currently carrying out more detailed engineering

assessments of its facilities and the decision to close was a result of this process. Corporate services general manager Paul Anderson said the council realised the facility was significant to the Akaroa community but its closure was necessary to ensure the ongoing safety of the public and council staff in the event of further earthquakes. The building also housed two other main tenants, New Zealand Post and the Akaroa Information Centre. “We are mindful of the impact this closure will have on the community but in this situation

we have had to take a cautious approach. We are investigating options for a temporary facility and will share details of this when they are confirmed.” As the service centre is a heritage building all recommendations for repair and earthquake strengthening will go to council for approval. There is currently no timeframe for when this will occur. Until a temporary facility is available, the nearest service centre is the Little River Service Centre, 4236 Christchurch Akaroa Rd. It is open on weekdays from 9am-5pm.

Dedicated teacher: Warren Hawke with the senior class at Governors Bay School.

Creative educator says goodbye PRINCIPAL of Governors Bay School Warren Hawke is leaving after 19 and a half years in the job. Looking back, Mr Hawke said the biggest thing for him was the “wonderful feedback and the enjoyment working with kids he had had over the years. “Seeing them learn and grow and creating good learning situations where they can move forward has been very satisfying, he said. He had previously taught at Belfast and Burwood schools as well as a number of other schools, mostly in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch. He has also worked as an education adviser. With only four classrooms and mostly fewer than 100 pupils, Governors Bay School has enabled Mr Hawke to also teach rather than be a full-time administrator like principals in larger schools. Creative poetry has been a specialist area for Mr Hawke. “The big thing about poetry is that the children can have a good chance of success with it, whether they’re writing a whole page or just one line. In writing poetry, they can sort out their experiences and talk about deeper things. “The kids absolutely love writing poetry; they demand it, Mr Hawke said. Mr Hawke said he had run the school like a family, providing support for the pupils who come from around the Governors Bay, Cass Bay, and Charteris Bay areas. Rather than moving to another school, he intended to go into “semi-retirement. “I may do some education consulting work. My firm belief is that New Zealand has an amazing education system with an amazing group of teachers across the country. “We are fifth in the world for education according to OECD figures, but 20th for the amount of funding the sector receives. I’m tired of politicians using it as a political football. “I’m sure we can always do better. It’s about consultation and the best use of resources. We need to work together, especially to address the tail of underachievement. As Massey’s Emeritus Professor Ivan Snook said, underachievement is directly related

to poverty rather than to schools failing. “There’s no simple answer. It’s about how we can assist poorer people to build a better lifestyle for themselves, with courses to lift their skills and with family assistance. Mr Hawke is also working on surfing photography, in addition to the work he does for surfing magazines. He said his photography work took him around New Zealand to Kaikoura, Banks Peninsula, the West Coast, the Catlins, and overseas to places such as Samoa, Indonesia, and Australia.

Cholmondeley benefits from successful fundraiser THIS year’s Sculpture on the Peninsula held last November 4 was, once again, a very successful event, raising $70,000 for Cholmondeley. Run by the Lombardy Trust, the biennial event is held at Loudon Farm in Teddington. Cholmondeley has been involved for over 10 years. “Sculpture on the Peninsula has become one of Canterbury’s great art and culture occasions. The contribution of the Lombardy Trust to Cholmondeley, its harbour basin neighbour, helps the children and families of our region. It is a wonderful relationship. Our society is the better because of it,” Sir Kerry Burke, president of Cholmondeley, said. The money will be split, with $35,000 going directly to the running of Cholmondeley and $35,000 to the Cholmondeley Children’s Foundation. Chairman of the Cholmondeley Children’s Foundation Richard Ballantyne said the support the Canterbury community gave Cholmondeley was outstanding. “This generous donation to the foundation will be a huge help in securing the financial sustainability of the home long into the future,” he said. Cholmondeley is the only community-accessed respite care service in New Zealand and is primarily funded by the Canterbury community. It has been providing short-term and emergency respite care for children aged between five and 12 for 86 years, and over that time has looked after an estimated 25,000 children.

Book exchange with a twist Christine de Felice

A WISH to help provide support for the Heathcote community, following the February earthquake, prompted resident Jos de Kort to establish a unique book exchange service, with the books being stored in old fridges. The closure of the Heathcote Library due to quake damage was also a reason for the idea, she said. After acquiring three fridges, she painted them in bright colours and designated one for fiction, one for non-fiction, and the other for children’s books. The freezer chest in one provides a handy storage for magazines. “People from the community have donated books and I was

also given a boxful by the Salvation Army in Northlands,” Mrs de Kort said. The exchange is located at 10 Martindales Road and can be accessed by borrowers at any time. “I did get some comments that it would get vandalised, but that hasn’t happened. “The system is simple. You take one book and leave one book in its place. Take two books and leave two, take three and leave three, take four, leave four, and so on. “When you have finished reading the books, return one, take one, return two, take two, return three, take three, and so on. Honesty and respect is the name of the game.”

Christchurch City Council approved a recommendation to replace the bridge at a meeting last week. No timeline has yet been set for the completion of the project. Council unit manager of transport PHONE TODAY and greenspace Alan Beuzenberg said damage as a result of the recent earthquakes had presented some unique engineering challenges that have caused delays. However, it was vital that the project got underway again to secure long-term access for local residents and visitors to the area. effects on that bridge and it’s a lifeline, so it’s important that we have some resilience in that lifeline.” Council staff assured him that the new bridge would not preclude any of the community vision along the estuary edge or restrict masterplanning of the area from Ferry Road to Sumner. Mt Pleasant Memorial Centre and Residents’ Association chairperson Jocelyn Papprill said it was important that the bridge was strengthened and she hoped that access to the city would not be compromised for residents and emergency services while the work was ongoing. “There could be a fire on the hills and how easy is it for emergency vehicles getting over those temporary platforms?” In response, a council spokesperson said the temporary bridge would carry the same rating as the existing bridge and heavy vehicles would still be able to use it.

Wise Stars a highlight of the week Margaret Coleman

Shared enjoyment: Fynn Brennan, Andrew Howe, Mary Rossiter, and Sasha Stedman enjoy reading together.

Rewarding times: Joel Fulford, John Robb, Sophie Hayden, and Fredrica Greening share a story.

IN mid-2009, our school initiated a programme we termed ‘Wise Stars,’ which fits in with the Rising Stars’ values philosophy of our school. The school and the parish already have a close relationship, so we invited our parishioners to be involved with the school on a more regular basis to strengthen this connection. Thus, Wise Stars was born. A group of Star of the Sea School parishioners visit the junior class every week for a reading experience. They are an enthusiastic, reliable group and all of them enjoy the interaction with the children. During this time, the adults and the children read their favourite books to each other. The children have grown more confident as they independently read to the Wise Stars. It is a very rewarding experience for

Earthquake relief keeps club busy Mary Jamieson

HERE we are nearly at the end of 2011, a year which none of us will ever forget. Lyttelton Lions Club has been very active with financially helping lots of people with earthquake relief. All schools and preschools in the Lyttelton and bay area have now received their cheques to pay for emergency kits. It has been inspiring to talk to staff at these schools, their dedication to their students is truly wonderful. This month we have assisted Lyttelton Sea Scouts and are talking to the

Lyttelton Tennis Club about future funding. At our last meeting for the year we inducted Ron Kelly into our club. Ron lives in Lyttelton and teaches at St Bedes. We know he is going to be a great Lion. We are having a break over Christmas but if anyone needs assistance please contact president Arnold on 960 9747 or Mary on 328 8523. We wish everyone a happy Christmas and hope that 2012 is a great year for all of us.

CHRISTMAS NEW YEAR HOURS Over the Christmas and New Year period the surgery will be closed from December 23rd 2011 from 4.30pm and will be re-opening from January 4th 2012 for restricted hours. Normal hours resume January 9th 2012

CHARLESWORTH Reserve on the edge of the Avon Heathcote Ihutai Estuary is one of the city’s hidden gems. But it is quickly becoming a key example of coastal biodiversity. The land at the reserve has come full circle – from coastal wetland, to farm, to industrial site and now back to coastal wetland. One of the early industries there was the Zealandia Soap and Candle Company. In 1896 the company purchased land just west of the current Mitre 10 Megastore, which had been used by the Zealandia Carpet Factory. The new factory was large and produced washing soap, wax and candles. Fifty tons of soap was

made each month. The specialty product was a cold-water soap made according to a patent owned by a Mr Biggs of Christchurch. Just a year after opening, tragedy struck when the manager, 38-yearold John Myles Maxwell, was killed by a 4cwt cask of tallow. As it was being raised into a soap tank the cask fell across Mr Maxwell’s chest and head. He died instantly. The Star of February 5, 1897 published this notice: “The deceased, who leaves a wife and three children, was greatly esteemed by all who Bill Simpson is a trustee of the Avonknew him, and his untimely death Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust

will be deeply regretted.” The jury at the inquest returned a verdict of accidental death and made several recommendations to improve safety at the factory. There is no sign today of the soap works other than the occasional piece of concrete or iron dug up by volunteers as they plant native trees and shrubs. The city council created new ponds there in 1999 and more than 80,000 plants have been put in to recreate the coastal wetland. On Sunday afternoons at 3pm a small team of volunteers meets to plant, weed and mulch at the reserve. You are very welcome to join them.

Hagley/ Ferrymead COMMUNITY BOARD UPDATE - DECEMBER 2011

Message from the Board Chairperson 2Q EHKDOI RI WKH +DJOH\ )HUU\PHDG &RPPXQLW\ Board and the staff who support us, may I extend to you our best wishes for an enjoyable Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

As the recovery process continues, we look to our local culture, strength and knowledge to enable communities to contribute to choices that build a safer, more sustainable environment.

As a result of the earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks and the impacts upon us all, this year will be etched in our memories forever. Despite the damages and challenges, so PDQ\ KDYH VKRZQ UHPDUNDEOH UHVLOLHQFH 2XU thoughts are with those who have lost family and friends, those who suffered injuries, and those experiencing the trauma of leaving their homes.

The Council recently adopted the Board’s recommendation for the Draft Linwood Village Master Plan, which is now available for public consultation, and work is underway on Draft Master Plans for Sumner and Ferry Road/ Main Road. I am confident that this work will contribute to a city of which we can all be proud.

The year ahead will no doubt present its challenges, and the tough times will continue for some. We have witnessed unparalleled community spirit which, along with the valuable contributions from our emergency and social services, will continue to support those in need.

Best wishes to you all.

Bob Todd Chairperson Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board

And the records keep falling Anne Wells

AS the halfway mark in the season is reached, the Sumner Running Club junior athletes are showing no let-up in their drive towards improving their performances in the regular Saturday competition. Having competed on Burnside High School’s grass track for all but two of the meets, their achievements are even more notable. To date, 15 records (two new and 13 existing ones) have been broken, with five of these having stood for an average of six years. The records have been spread between seven track, five field, and three relay events. Coupled with this, over 200 PBs have been achieved by the athletes as a whole. Thomas Webley, Sam Caldwell, John Wells, and Millie Edmond continue to have outstanding seasons, consistently being highly placed in their events. Ten of the club records have involved these athletes. In the girls, Abby Theobald, Meg Webley, and Bridget Bell show improving form in the longer track events, with

Victoria Wells, Tilly Pritchard, and Andie Fitch doing the same in the sprints. All have been involved in the various relay teams, which have achieved top-two finishes as well as three records. Newcomers the Andrews brothers have brought additional speed to the grade 9 and 10 boys and have been performing well in both sprint and relay events. Thomas Andrews was in the mixed-medley relay team that broke the grade 10 record by 23 seconds, and Oliver Andrews has teamed up with Dominic Godfrey (9), Connor Langworthy (9), and John Wells (8) in the 4 x 100m relay, finishing second in their last outing in the boys 9 grade. Younger members Sam and Aaron Clarke and Blake Theobald have had a good half season, showing all-round improvement in their events. Finishing off the first part of the season, Blake (7), Aaron (6), and Millie (7) teamed up with Regan Jones (8) to finish second in the grade 8 boys’ relay. Regan has also shown improved form in the 200m and long jump this season.

Swimmer Scholarships 2011 At the 2 November meeting of the Hagley/ Ferrymead Community Board, Bob Todd, Board Chairperson and Jenny Johnson, of Swimming Canterbury West Coast (SCWC) presented 2011 Talented Swimmer Scholarships to Brittany Tucker, Charles Porter and Sean Hartgers.

Applications for the WPASC 2012 Potential Swimmer and Talented Swimmer scholarships open early in the New Year. Information will be available from local schools, or by contacting Diana Saxton, phone 941 6628 or diana.saxton@ccc.govt.nz

The scholarships were established by the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board after receiving funds from the former Woolston Park Amateur Swimming Club (WPASC) and are administered with the support of SCWC. The aim of the scholarships is to assist talented and potential swimmers in the area. Jenny Johnson, Charles Porter and Bob Todd

Porthole Container Bar

The Best Recycling Example Over the last few months there has been lots of ac vity on the site of the Volcano cafe on the corner of London Street and Canterbury Street. Three containers are being converted into a new bar called Porthole and it is hoped the bar will be open before Christmas. The bar has been designed using three shipping containers, which are placed in a U shape with a covered deck space in between. Many will note the port holes now welded into the side of the containers, giving the Porthole a very Ly elton inspired name. Porthole is owned by local, Mike Dunlay and his business partner, Chris Stead. Mike, who has previously owned a bar in Christchurch, says, “I saw an opportunity to create the sort of bar that suits the quirkiness of Ly elton and the current mes. I had been trying to ďŹ nd a venue to meet this need for months and when Pete and Lois agreed to us pu ng a temporary building on their site it was a perfect solu on. This last year has been a year of immense change for all of us. Even for the very lucky shops such as ours who sustained minimal physical damage it has been a year of extraordinary challenges on several dierent levels. We’ve had many of our beloved sta move on, but have also gained some fantas c new talent. Our sales are up, but our supply chain has dras cally changed. We no longer can rely on the support structure which we previously had, but we now have expanded freedom and control over how we operate. So it is due to a wide range of circumstances that Ly el Piko is in need of restructuring. We are currently inves ga ng the viability of turning Ly el Piko into a Community Owned Co-Opera ve. This would mean that you, the customers of Ly el Piko would be asked to buy shares in a new Co-Opera ve and become its owners. This would generate much needed capital for the shop which would help to pay o previous debt and secure funding for future growth. For you, the customers, the beneďŹ ts could include price breaks on selected items, bulk buying discounts, member apprecia on day discounts, access to workshops and seminars, more open sharing of informa on, and poten ally proďŹ t sharing. But more importantly – you would have a direct say in how the shop is run. All members or owners would have an equal vote on major issues and would elect a board of directors which would steer and oversee the opera ons of the business. Through our ini al research we have come across several successful models for Co-Opera ves and need your feedback to understand what would be the best choices for us. We at Ly el

Piko want to see this shop stay in Ly elton serving this incredible community, but we will need a lot of support to do it. There are few ways that you can contribute right now. Firstly, ďŹ ll out a survey on www.surveymonkey.com/s/XGQNQY7 [if you need the old fashioned paper version stop by the shop and that can be arranged]. This is of vital importance. It will help us understand who our customers are, how we can serve them better, and what the viability of se ng up a Co-opera ve is. Secondly, if you have the me, we are in dire need of some volunteer hours. Jobs like packing, cleaning and shelf stocking are things that would help out immensely. Please stop by or give us a call if you are interested. Even an hour here and there would be valuable. Thank you again for all of your support over the last four years. We are excited about what the future holds for our Ly el shop and for this great community. By the way, 2012 has been designated the Interna onal Year of the Co-Opera ve. Please keep your eyes and ears open for some even bigger plans coming out of Project Ly elton. Organically yours, The Ly el Piko Team Email: ly elpiko@pikowholefoods.co.nz Phone: 03 328 8544

Christmas Wishes Christmas Eve Children’s Service - 4:30 pm at The Church of St Mary, Heathcote

The word ‘Eldorado’ means gilded one. For most primi ve people throughout history, the sun has been the supreme god, giving the world its warmth and light. Legend has it that 25th December was the date of the winter sols ce, when the sun begins its return to the northern skies. Bonfires were lit to welcome back the sun a er the darkness of the short days. By the 3rd Century AD the sun-god was the principle patron of the Roman Empire. We don’t know the date of Christ’s birth but we do know that the 25th December was chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus. As the prophet (Isaiah 1:1ff) says, ’The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in the land of deep shadow a light has shone’. In the Chris an tradi on we interpret that light to be Jesus the Christ, ‘the true light to enlighten all people’. (Jn.1:9) The Christmas story we hear each year is the same, but we are different. Our world is different, our city and suburbs are different. Our lives have been disrupted, we are the ‘earth-quaked’, we have shared shakiness and terror, our trust in the earth has been tested, our hope and resilience have been called on in new ways. But no ma er what changes we have undergone, what losses we have mourned, what uncertainty we live with; the Christmas story speaks to us again of new birth and the possibility of our own rebirth, as individual’s, suburban communi es and the city itself. It tells us that things can be regenerated; it gives substance to our hope that new life is possible because of the birth of the Son of God. We are called again to see for ourselves the fragility of God, the li leness of the mighty one, the tenderness of a love that is offered for all people. May we take heart and hope in this reality. Fr Denis Nolan Parish Priest Sumner, Ly elton & Diamond Harbour Catholic Parishes Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church was one of many churches severely damaged by the quakes of 2011. Our members were delighted to have been warmly invited to join in with the Sumner-Redcliffs Union congrega on, who also made their Sumner Church available to the local Catholic community a er the Catholic church was destroyed. We like to think that such inclusiveness and co-opera on is a tangible expression of the Christmas message of “Peace and Goodwill to all people”. The earthquakes’ a ermath has certainly seen many acts of Chris an love in our city. May it (but not the quakes!) con nue. Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church
