Sumner resident takes anti-nuclear action Christine de Felice THE disaster in Japan that closely followed the Christchurch earthquake prompted Sumner resident Yasue Parker to become involved in an anti-nuclear campaign. happened a few weeks after the Christchurch quake, her thoughts turned to her own country’s people. “In our disaster I was thinking of Japan’s and I wanted to help,” Mrs Parker said. Her opportunity came when she met Kuniko Koyama, from Tokyo. Mrs Koyama and her husband had come to Christchurch in January this year as refugees of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The two women met at a meeting in
Christchurch held by people who had come from the tsunami-stricken area in Japan. They discussed how they could recover from the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami. Mrs Koyama was very concerned about what was happening in the area. “Soon after the earthquake, all of Japan’s 54 nuclear plants were shut down, but then in July this year two were reopened. And the plants at Fukishima are still emitting radiation into the air and into the ocean,” Mrs Koyama said. Continued on page 3
