Muddy good fun in Little River

Fun in the mud: Jeremy (dad) and Connor Calcroft make it safely to the bottom of the Scary Slippery Mudslides at The Little River Campground on Saturday. The school holiday KidsFest activity got off to a muddy start with families braving the cold and the mud. “The mudslides are good old-fashioned fun, perfect for a wet weather activity,” Marcus Puentener from the campground said. “Kids now have an excuse to get completely filthy, as do mum and dad.” He recommends wearing old clothes, a wetsuit if possible and even football boots to help gain traction. SUMNER people still zoned white following last Friday’s rezoning announcement are staying loyal to their seaside suburb, whatever the outcome of the next zoning decision they told Bay Harbour News. About 50 residents from the Sumner ‘red-stickered’ group gathered at Van Asch Deaf Education Centre on Sunday morning to exchange views on the rezoning. The meeting was organised by Simon Langer, who is one of those whose property is still white. “I’m still white and I want to be green, but I haven’t got a problem with the delay [in the decision]. They can’t make these massive decisions in a hurry.” However, another white-zoned resident, Lisa Humphrey, said she was “absolutely disgusted” at the delay and wanted to go red, and wanted to stay in Sumner. “It’s time to take some serious action. We might have to go and address Parliament and pin John Key down.” Wakefield Avenue resident and local restaurant owner Helen Kraal wants to go green and is also very disappointed in the delay. “We have been re-stickered since the massive rockfall. I want to stay in Sumner, but if I don’t go green I have no idea where I’ll live.” A resident who had gone green was concerned about the ending of the WINZ accommodation allowance. “We are over the EQC cap, ($100,000) but while we have been white we haven’t been able to start on the repairs. We are already topping up our accommodation allowance by $125,” Vivien Coulter said. “We won’t feel happy when the Section 124 is lifted if we can’t get the WINZ allowance.” Facebook comments Here are some come comments posted on our Rise Up Christchurch Facebook page regarding the rezoning.Marie Cousins: “I have family down in McCormacks Bay who have been unable to move on while the uncertainty over the land their property was on remains. Today they found out their land has been red zoned. Finally a chance to begin to plan a more settled life. I really, really feel for those still in the white zone. Keep strong.” Marie Sherry: “Being red zoned is great news for a lot of people and I know many people who have come out financially better off.”

New pharmacy service proving popular in Redcliffs THE Medication Management Service recently introduced at Redcliffs Pharmacy has been well-received by Redcliffs residents, owner and pharmacist, Daryl Sayer says. This Canterbury District Health Boardfunded service allows patients to have uninterrupted time, either in the pharmacy, or in their home, to discuss their medicines indepth. “The Medication Management Service is a great chance for patients to learn even more about their medicines without the usual time pressures. “Our staff pharmacist, Sandi, and I are trained to deliver this service, meaning that

the patient has the choice of seeing a male or female pharmacist if they wish,” Mr Sayer said. “The uptake of this service has been good in Redcliffs, with much positive feedback from the patients who have used it. They have a real opportunity to get to know why they are taking their medicines, and how to take them.” The service is available to regular patients of Redcliffs Pharmacy who have specified conditions and who may have medicines issues, such as taking three or more medicines. Interested people should contact the pharmacy to discuss the service and to arrange an appointment time.

Sunny smiles: Sumner school celebrates with the Schoolgen team, Maggie Twaddle and Rob Duff, and Genesis Energy Chief Executive, Albert Brantley

Saving energy at Sumner School STUDENTS at Sumner school celebrated the launch of the Genesis Energy Schoolgen programme with a solar-themed assembly on June 20. Sumner School was the first primary school in the South Island to be officially launched into the programme. It all began with four of the children, Katie Rossiter, Sonja Gleeson, Virginia Macdonald and Emma Gloss, applying to Genesis Energy for free solar panels. The girls made an animation video persuading Genesis Energy why solar panels were so important to have at Sumner School. Their application, along with the applications from two other Christchurch schools, was successful. The solar panels have been installed on the roof of Room 12. “We are really glad that we were chosen because it has really influenced us to care about the energy we use. The panels will be there for generations to come,” Sonja said. Virginia said it was great to have the solar panels. “It makes us all more aware of the environment around us and how we can help to preserve the energy we use.” Maggie Twaddle, the Schoolgen team leader, worked with 20 children to prepare for their

performance at the launch, which was about what solar energy is, the benefits of using solar energy and how the future will look if you use solar energy. Students and teachers from Banks Ave and Middleton Grange School, the other two Christchurch schools involved in the programme, and members of the school boards also attended the event. Launched in 2006 as a community initiative, the Schoolgen programme aims to teach children about renewable energy and energy efficiency. Students are able to see how much electricity their solar panels are producing in real time via an interactive website (www.schoolgen.co.nz) and in doing so are provided with real work lessons about solar energy, climate change and electricity generation. In addition to this, the students and teaching staff have access to the Schoolgen resource materials which support the science and technology curriculum. These resources are freely available to all schools throughout the country, irrespective of whether or not they are directly involved in the Schoolgen programme.

Cathedral bells being shipped overseas for repairs Christine de Felice

AFTER spending the last eight months in storage at Ferrymead Heritage Park, the 13 bells from ChristChurch cathedral are being shipped from Lyttelton today. The bells are being taken to England, where the damage sustained when they fell down in the February 22 earthquake will be repaired. On Saturday, a group of the cathedral’s bell ringers spend several hours packing the bells into two containers ready for shipment. The total weight of the 13 bells is about seven metric tonnes. Shipping company Maersk is transporting them free of charge. The cost of the repairs will depend on how extensive they will need to be, ringing master Mike Clayton said. The bellringers are fundraising to pay for the repairs. “We have approached overseas groups of bellringers and the Australian/New Zealand Bellringers Association has already made a generous donation,” bellringer Anita Adams said. They hoped to have the bells back in Christchurch within a year, but that would depend on the success of the fundraising to pay for the repairs, Ms Adams said. The bellringers also hoped the bells would be installed in the cathedral again. “There is a lot of commitment to having the Delivery: Dudley Berry brings one of the bells to be packed into the container. cathedral rebuilt,” Ms Adams said.

Akaroa Museum closed facilities and our staff who work in them is our priority and it is important that we do not put them at risk in the event of future earthquakes or aftershocks.” Much of the museum’s collection is currently housed in the storeroom and museum staff will use this building as temporary offices. Once staff are set up in these temporary offices they will be able to continue to answer collectionsrelated and family history inquiries. DEE assessments are also being carried out on the Langlois-Eteveneaux Cottage and the Court House, which are on the Akaroa Museum site. Although the results of these assessments have not yet been received, these buildings are also closed due to visitors not being able to access the museum. The future of Akaroa Museum will be determined as part of the council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan. Once the quantitative DEE has been completed, the council will investigate repair and strengthening options for the museum. A report with recommendations will then go to elected members for consideration.

AKAROA Museum has been closed following a detailed engineering assessment. The Christchurch City Council has closed the museum after receiving the results of a qualitative Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) assessment, which shows most of the museum buildings are below 34 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS). Engineers will now carry out more investigations as part of a quantitative DEE assessment, which will look even more closely at the buildings’ capacity to withstand future earthquakes. This is expected to take up to two months to complete. General manager community services Michael Aitken said the council was conscious of the impact the closure would have on a community where it has already closed a number of other buildings as a result of DEE assessments. “The Akaroa community has been significantly affected with a number of buildings closing. We understand how difficult this has been for residents and we are also mindful that the tourist season is approaching. However, the safety of the public visiting our

BANKS Peninsula author Fiona Farrell was “thrilled to bits” to be awarded the ONZM for services to literature in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, even though she had only a few hours to agree to accepting the award. “I was in Britain for my father-inlaw’s 95th birthday so I didn’t get the letter. I was contacted by email through my agent in Canada. That was about eight hours before the deadline to accept.” Originally from Palmerston North, Ms Farrell has lived at Otanerito, one of the outer bays of Akaroa harbour, Combined effort: Fiona Farrell, right, with her friend and photographer Juliet Nicholas display their recently released since 1992. Letters to the editor

Brothel regulations THERE’S been some alarmist comments regarding the Christchurch City Council’s proposed bylaw to regulate where brothels can be located at Lyttelton It’s worth noting that brothels are, and always have been, able to operate in the Lyttelton area. The new bylaw proposed by the Christchurch City Council doesn’t attempt to change that, but what it does propose to do is limit brothels to the town centre zone only, rather than in other areas where they can currently do business, because of the more permissive stance of the Banks Peninsula District Plan. Regulations on signage will also be introduced to ensure that it cannot be offensive.

A council flyer has been mailed out to all Lyttelton residents, briefly outlining the intentions of the bylaw. Claudia Reid Christchurch city councillor

Stream protection at Orton Bradley funded

Streamside: Ian Luxford (Orton Bradley Park manager), Donald Couch (Environment Canterbury commissioner and zone committee member), Claudia Reid (Christchurch city councillor and zone committee member) and Richard Simpson (chair of the Banks Peninsula Zone Committee).

MORE than $40,000 is being spent on native plants, upgrading fencing and installing two stock crossing culverts to enhance and protect Te Wharau Stream in Orton Bradley Park, thanks to Immediate Steps funding from the Banks Peninsula Zone Committee. Recognising the native biodiversity values of its local waterways, the Orton Bradley Park Board has been working towards excluding stock from the streams and tributaries and providing large areas along the banks for native plants to thrive. Banks Peninsula Zone Committee chair Richard Simpson said it was pleasing to see how the work of the zone committee was able to help protect local biodiversity values. “The Te Wharau Stream is rich with biodiversity values. There are many species of native freshwater invertebrates and fish. The work funded under the Immediate Steps programme will further improve the instream health by providing better habitat for invertebrates and fish as well as the numerous native birds that reside within the park boundaries. “The funding will enable the board and its supporters to continue the great work they do

to help protect and enhance native biodiversity and provide a publicly accessible environment for people to learn from and enjoy.” The Orton Bradley Park Board also undertakes an extensive programme of weed and pest control and native planting each year. Park manager Ian Luxford said the park was a valuable resource for the local community and it was important that its diverse values are protected. “We appreciate the support we have received and look forward to getting stuck in and getting the work done,” he said. Work is expected to be completed by the end of this summer. Four Immediate Steps projects were approved by the Banks Peninsula Zone Committee in December. They are Orton Bradley Park culvert installation, fencing and riparian planting; fencing out regenerating native bush and the headwaters of Haylocks Stream; willow control and riparian planting along a stretch of the Okana River, in Little River; and willow control, riparian planting and the installation of permanent stock-proof fencing along a significant stretch of the Opuahou Stream in Little River.

Timebank bridges adult education gap WITH the government cuts to funding for adult education making it difficult for some people to access classes, the Lyttelton TimeBank is taking matters in to its own hands. It is running a series of adult education classes this winter, which are payable in New Zealand dollars or time credits.

Classes range from woodworking skills, to permaculture, craft making and guitar playing. They are being run by time bankers who will receive timebank credits for delivering them and attendees can pay in New Zealand dollars, or if they are members of the Lyttelton TimeBank, in time credits.

COlds What is a cold?

The common cold is a viral infection that mainly affects the nose and throat. It usually lasts for only two to three days and is a mild illness in healthy people. Colds are very infectious and are easily spread from person to person by droplets from coughing and sneezing. It can also be spread by close contact with an infected person for example by shaking hands.

What are the symptoms of a cold?

Usually with a cold you will have watery eyes and a runny nose. You may also have a cough, a sore throat or sneeze. Sometimes people get mild headaches. Sometimes people get confused about whether they have the flu or a cold. The symptoms of a cold are much less severe than those of the flu. With a cold you are very unlikely to have a high fever or to have muscle and joint aches and pains. Tiredness and weakness are much less severe with a cold. With the flu you often feel so unwell you are unable to work or to play sport.

“Rather than be downhearted by the lack of funding and community courses on offer, we started to look at what skills we have got as a community and how we could share these. It’s just great, the timebank has the potential to help facilitate learning for the whole community,” manager for Project Lyttelton Lottie Harris said.

Sometimes people may get bacterial infections following a cold. If you experience more severe symptoms like sore ears, coughing up thick green or yellow mucus, pain in the chest, trouble breathing or if your cold does not get better seek medical advice. If you, or your child experiences a very sore throat, vomiting, blotchy rash, stiff neck, aversion to light or extreme lethargy or irritability consult a Doctor in order to rule out more serious illnesses.

Most people will get over a cold in just a few days. However several things can be done to make you feel more comfortable when you have a cold. • Drink plenty of fluid • Resting helps your body fight off a cold • Decongestant products can be used to clear a runny or blocked nose. Decongestant nose sprays or drops, such as Otrivin should only be used for three to four days in order to prevent rebound congestion occurring. Decongestant tablets will also help clear up a runny nose, but can cause restlessness and insomnia in some people. They can interact with some other medications, so check with the pharmacist if they are suitable for you. • Products like Panadol or Pamol for children can be used for pain relief • Some people find steam inhalations useful in clearing congestion. A few drops of Eucalyptus oil or adding some Vicks VapoRub to a bowl of hot water and inhaling the vapour can help clear the nose • Lozenges like Difflam can provide relief for sore throats • Natural products containing Zinc and Vitamin C may shorten the time you have a cold and may make it less severe.

Distribution centre opens

Promise kept never to close down

Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Kathmandu opened its new national distribution centre at Portlink last Thursday. The new building doubles the company’s warehouse capacity. Chief executive Peter Halkett said the distribution centre was transformational for Kathmandu and a step change in its capability. “As well as increasing our capacity the centre has allowed us to introduce new technology and work practices to improve efficiency.” The Portlink Centre will support Kathmandu’s on-going store roll-out program, the expansion of the company’s product range, and its rapidly growing online business. The distribution centre meets the highest earthquake standards. It has substantial seismic wiring, which holds the warehouse racking in place, and the racks are bolted to the floor. The drive-through canopy area, which is 1000 sqm and extends out 15 metres, is snowloading compliant.

LOCATED on McCormacks Bay Road, the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market continues to be busy whatever the weather. In the cold and wet, chat and leisurely coffee isn’t a priority, but the full range of products is always available. Vowing never to close, the market is now onto its 71st market without a break; rain, hail, sun or quakes will never close our market. Tom is currently visiting his elderly parents in the UK, Lorna is following soon and Joe is back from Wellington University to help. Jen and her lovely Goan curries are back, as is Jock from his recent trip to Thailand. We hope Lois returns from family duties in Australia soon. The fish from Lorna continues to be popular and the West Coast tuna has been delicious. Try fried brussel sprouts, which is scrumptious, and pumpkin soup is fantastic on these cold days. I am particularly keen on roast pumpkin with olive oil and rosemary, too. The new honey is delicious and excellent coffee is always available from the new Green Bean coffee cart. Spring is around the corner and plants are available. The new temporary community centre is available for hire and the squash club is always open to new members.

More people are now working in the suburbs, and using their local facilities, so while retaining good transport links to the central city is important, we need to reflect this change. Fewer passengers are now using the buses because our current services don’t meet their needs. We need to make changes to encourage more bus usage, increase our financial viability and better reflect the ‘new’ Christchurch. New proposed routes will bring more buses to key suburban locations, such as Papanui and Barrington. Although not all services will continue to travel via the city centre, good connections will be provided between services.

Environment Canterbury is proposing to introduce a new, more efficient design of bus network. This will be a network that makes it easier to travel from anywhereto-anywhere across the city as well as to the central city. High-frequency services will link major destinations across Christchurch, and these will be supported by local routes which connect at key suburban hubs.

1 Rangiora – Kaiapoi – City – Princess Margaret Hospital This service will run between Rangiora and Princess Margaret Hospital via Kaiapoi, Northlands and the city. Buses will run every 30 minutes weekdays and Saturdays until 7pm, and hourly at all other times.

Proposed Changes

These suburban hubs are places where bus routes will be timetabled to connect so passengers can change to other buses travelling to further destinations. Suburban hubs will be developed at major suburban centres (such as Papanui, Riccarton and Eastgate), and will be well lit, warm internal spaces. Initially these may be on-street but eventually some hubs will be upgraded to high quality off-street bus terminals.

Trader of the week Sarah of Sweetheart Bakery moved to Christchurch for an apprenticeship at the George Hotel and to study professional cookery at CPIT. “Having no kitchen experience but lots of passion, I was lucky to receive the opportunity to learn under chefs at the hotel!” Sarah and her business partner and fiancé Adrian launched their new business two years ago. They began with a market stall selling cupcakes from a trestle table in a marquee. This has now become a full-time enterprise. The two work together at their Wilson’s Road premises. The ‘world’s smallest shop’ has five seats, and there they create, cook and bake a huge range of pies and cakes. The savoury pies and Cornish pasties have been supplemented with venison, goat, hare and wild pork pies. “It’s great to work with diverse New Zealand meats and create something really unique from them for people to taste. We should be eating more of these lean and natural sources of protein,” Sarah says. All cakes and pies are baked on the day of sale, so 3am starts are the norm to ensure pies are beautifully fresh at the market each morning. I personally love their healthy and very tasty vegetarian ranges, especially winter veges with blue cheese.

Method: Melt the butter in a large thick-based saucepan, then add the prepared leeks, potato and watercress and stir them around so they’re coated with the melted butter. Sprinkle in some salt then cover with a lid and let the vegetables sweat over a very gentle heat for about 20 minutes, giving the mixture a good stir about halfway through. After that, add the stock, bring everything up to simmering point and simmer, covered, for about 10 to 15 minutes or until the vegetables are quite tender. Then remove the pan from the heat and when it’s cooled a little, liquidise the soup – you’ll need to do this in batches. Return it all to the saucepan, swirl in three tablespoons of crème fraîche, season to taste and reheat very gently. Then serve in hot soup bowls and garnish each one with a little extra crème fraîche and some watercress leaves.

Suburbs affected include (but are not limited to) Cashmere, Beckenham, Barrington, St Martins, Sydenham, Merivale, St Albans, Bryndwr, Papanui, Casebrook, Redwood, Belfast, and the Waimakariri District. Bus routes 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 22, 46, 90, and 92, 912 and 913 will be replaced with new services. Routes 28 and 60, while not changing, are also included in this proposal as we will be extending these routes to additional destinations.

We will be collecting blood at:

Central to the proposal is the introduction of a new high-frequency service, route 1 from Belfast to Princess Margaret Hospital, which makes full use of bus lanes to provide a high quality reliable service. The map overleaf shows the proposed new bus routes to take effect in late 2012. This is the first stage of implementation of this network design across Greater Christchurch. Following further public consultation, it is expected that the rest of the Christchurch bus network will be redeveloped in the future.

Birds on the move Martin Ward

WE all know that birds moving on the ground have different modes of ‘travel’ – some walk and some hop. Among those that hop, the most common are in our gardens - the sparrow and the blackbird. But most of the birds on or near the estuary walk (or run). This mode of travel is essential for these birds. Can you imagine them trying to creep up on their prey with a hop and a splash? Observing our waders in their restless patrol of the shallow water as it moves with the tide to and from the estuary edge, we see quite different styles of walking. Our most graceful walker is the white-faced heron whose delicate movements, one foot barely lifted to glide to its next resting place, enables it to move slowly in its pursuit of swimming food. All the while its neck cranes forward - some of its movements suggesting a tendon connection between legs and neck as they seem to move in unison. Clearly for the heron, walking is essential for feeding; stealth and guile are the heron’s hunting tools and walking helps this. Similarly, the pied stilt walks in its search for small crabs, shrimps and amphipods. But this is a more urgent pace, a stride, but nonetheless

Norman Webb A VERY successful and significant meeting of the Redcliffs Residents’ Association was held on June 14, with just over 100 residents attending. In opening the meeting, I remarked that our area was awash with rumours and welcomed the speakers, who all represented local interests, to explain just what was happening. Kim Alexander, principal of Redcliffs School, described how they were meeting the difficulties of travelling to the back of Sumner every day. One advantage, though, was the smaller class sizes. The timing of a return to Redcliffs depends on the geotechnicians’ assessment of the stability of the cliffs and the construction of protective barriers. Dave Bryce spoke for the Redcliffs Redevelopment Group, who have many ideas, and for the Coastal Pathway Group. The city council supports this latter project in principle, but there is no timing or budgeting finalised.

Reg Dalley spoke of the work being done on the community shed and praised the level of work that has gone into transforming an old building. Fletcher Stanton spoke of the ongoing interest in the information centre. There is a steady flow of folk wanting information about getting help with tradesmen, finding accommodation for short periods of time, or worrying about the future of their property. David Livingstone put the case for the extension of the Neighbourhood Support groups. David Stringer of the Ferrymead/Brookhaven Residents’ Association brought up a number of significant issues that people face when dealing with insurance and his ideas were well received. Claire Milne from the Christchurch City Council spoke of the work she and her colleagues are doing.

delicate. The royal spoonbill has a measured pace, each step advancing its sweeping bill’s path into unfiltered bottom sediment holding its food of choice. Another walker seen on the shore most commonly when the tide is well down is the dotterel. This little fellow moves from action to inaction with a rapid pace, so is better labelled a darter rather than a walker. Our sturdier oystercatchers, both the variable and the South Island pied, also walk and they find the slow and measured pace helps them locate the surface sign of their prey. And their stealth may allow them to quickly insert their beak between the shells of relaxed and unprepared bivalves.

The fact that there was no speaker to represent Foodstuffs (SI) Ltd was deplored. The second part of the meeting was to consider the adoption of a complete constitution, which would be acceptable in terms of our efforts to become incorporated. The chairman pointed out that not all members felt there was a need to become an incorporated society. However, most of the speakers felt that incorporation would make for a more effective group. The motion that we should accept the new constitution to enable us to apply to be incorporated was carried by a substantial majority. Elections followed: Norman Webb, president; Teresa Murphy, treasurer; with a committee comprising Fletcher Stanton, David Bryce, Deidre Johns and Peter Hyde. A secretary is still to be arranged. Norman Webb is the president of the Redcliffs Residents’ Association.

Our emergency services

The ever-ready Sumner sentinel Islay McLeod IF you were around Scarborough on Saturday, June 16, you’d surely have noticed Blue Arrow Rescue, the Sumner lifeboat, undergoing what appeared to be rigorous sea-trials. It was actually an opportunity for supporters to experience the service and I was one of them. What an unforgettable “woo hoo” experience! On February 22, 2011, the Sumner lifeboat station was suddenly as vulnerable as everyone else in the community without power. Lifeboat crew, fully trained in incident management,

rallied to the fire station, staffing their communications and dispatch and installing a generator rushed up from Ashburton. Still the situation caused a re-evaluation of the response-readiness of the Sumner Lifeboat and they’ve acted fast. Thanks to the Canterbury Masonic Charitable Trust, Sumner Lifeboat is about to install a standby generator and battery banks with capacity double anything the lifeboat would ever need. That means they’ll be set up, not

It meets Tuesday evenings, 6pm to 8pm, during the school terms at the Lyttelton St John Ambulance station in London Street. The division is managed by three adult youth leaders, Annabelle, Avan and Kyael. We have two groups of youth activity – Penguins for six to eight years and Cadets for eight to 18 years. Currently, we are not offering the Penguin programme at Lyttelton, but we hope to offer it next year once our cadet programme is established. Cadets are the largest group within St John Youth. They are grouped according to age into various levels for training, competitions, events, camps and social activities. We also have mixed activities where senior cadets take the lead and provide role models for junior cadets. Every cadet division has a unique programme to suit needs and interests so there is a lot of variety in the activities offered. The levels in our cadet programme are junior:

up and down to keep warm. On your marks, bang! Everyone sprinted to get into the lead, and as we rounded the first bend I was just behind the top pack. The first kilometre loop went really fast. Slowly, girls started overtaking me. I wasn’t tired yet. The top 10 might be too far away now but I still kept running. The toughest part was still to come. The hill is definitely my strength. I passed a few girls then I coasted the downhill. One kilometre to go - last Stella’s run Lyttelton West School lap. I was getting a bit tired now. The finish line was just My stomach was churning within reach. There was a girl with anticipation. This was the moment I’d been hoping for since I was close behind me. I summoned up the rest of nine years old. I was more than ready; I’d been my strength and sprinted for the line. It was training for months on end. I had to get in the over. Someone handed me a number; I glanced top 10 to qualify for the Canterbury Cross- at it – 28, not too bad. It was over. I can’t believe I’d actually got Country Team. It was a long shot but if I ran that far. harder than I ever had I might just make it. The sun disappeared behind a cloud; it started raining ... personally, I like it that way. Max’s run Bang! The start gun goes and I run off. All the All too soon they were calling up my race. Forty nervous 12-year-old girls were jumping people are older than me and faster at sprinting OUR senior class has been working on the script for the school production, which is in its final draft. All the classes will be involved and it will be showcased to the parents on September 26 and 27. The production’s title is Time Quake. Two of our students competed in the Canterbury Cross-Country on Wednesday, June 13. Well done to Stella Reid and Max McLachlan on their achievement!

Then back up the hill, then down the hill to the finish. I get given a card that says 19th. I am happy with my placing. Reunion The 125th Reunion celebrations are taking shape – keep an eye on the website (www. lytteltonwest.school.nz) over the next few weeks. The registration form as well as the programme will be available shortly. We are still wanting more photos, especially from around the 70s; if possible send a copy to office@lytteltonwest.school.nz. Remember to mark Sunday, October 21, 2012, on your calendar! This will be a celebration of the past, present and future of Lyttelton West School!

Peace of mind for the future, plus something for today!

Kiwi’s in general don’t want to talk about death! However, the benefits of pre-arranging your funeral can outweigh any feelings of unease. We at Canterbury Christian Funeral Services believe that by pre-planning, your family can have peace of mind regarding the practical issues and different wishes you may have around your funeral service. Canterbury Christian Funeral Services have compiled an obligation-free information pack, available on request, and will help you and your family prepare for the future. THINGS always get busy at the end of the term and so it is with this one. On the secondto-last week we had a pyjama day, which was very well supported by the students and staff. That night we had a pizza and movie evening that saw most of the school turn out for a fun night. In the final week of term we had our parent interviews, and on Monday I met with the other principals in the bay area for our regular get together. These events rounded out another busy and highly successful term. We currently have a focus on our school vision ‘Living to Learn, Learning to Live’, Colourful sleepwear: Students and staff joined in and it is interesting to talk to people and see the fun of pyjama day. what it means to them. Show provides new twist on old classic

Best Motorbuys Everything Motoring

A NEW interactive version of The Three Little Pigs is being performed by Riccarton Players over the school holidays. The 90-minute adventure is designed to appeal to both adults and children according to writer and director John Boyce. “The script has been written on several levels to not only appeal to the young ones, who will enjoy interacting with some of their favourite characters, singing along to familiar songs and helping our three little heroes evade capture.” After the show children will have the chance to meet the cast and chat to their favourite characters. The performances will be held at the Hagley Open Stage Theatre at Hagley Community College in Addington. All tickets are $10 and the show runs until Sunday July 15 with performances on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday shows at 7pm and two shows on Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 2pm. Creative festival to liven the spirits DURING the first two weeks of July the rural town of Little River on Banks Peninsula will be buzzing with creativity for the first-ever Little River Creative Festival. It will include workshops such as soft cheese making, flax weaving, craft days and a special effects (SFX) makeup workshop for kids, especially timed for the Zombie Party on Friday, July 13. The Little River Waiwera Community Trust, who initiated the festival, have coordinated a series of workshops and community events at low cost, or even at no cost. “We have a very creative community and

We decided to hold it in winter, as there is not a lot happening during the school holidays,” coordinator of the event Marcus Puentener said. “That is not to say all the events are aimed at children. We have a medicine-making workshop at Phytofarm aimed at adults, as well as whole family events suitable for the kids and parents.” The full festival programme can be found at www.biglittleriver.co.nz or by calling Marcus Puentener on (03) 325 1014.

Exhibition traces story of Christchurch Christchurch remembered: Painting by Wayne Seyb of Colombo Street on June 1, 2011. A website was set up to support Canterbury artists after the earthquakes and Wayne Seyb, whose work was displayed on the website, was selected as the artist most appropriate for the exhibition at the Royal Commission hearings.

Paintings make hearings venue a more inviting place WORKS by Canterbury artist Wayne Seyb are on display at the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission hearing room at St Teresa’s church hall in Riccarton. Most of the eight artworks depict Christchurch street scenes and buildings with the city’s CBD, which relates directly to the commission’s inquiry. Seyb began painting street scenes a month after the February 22 earthquake as a way of managing the stress resulting from the event. “I started painting around my local area – Avonside, Linwood and Dallington - carrying canvas, paints and brushes around the streets, working on the spot. From my neighbourhood I branched out and began painting around the edges of the cordon,” he said. “People would watch me paint, sharing stories with me and commenting on my work. I got more feedback on my paintings from people on the street than in all my years of exhibiting. It was a shared experience.” Seyb got to know police and army personnel manning the cordons. They were interested in what he was doing, particularly the process of painting with oil on canvas. “I was making a record of places before they were gone. Often landmarks I painted became empty spaces a week or so later. Painting became a race against time.” The exhibition was organised by the Canterbury Arts and Heritage Trust. “Wayne Seyb’s works illustrate the way in

which original works of art can connect and support a community by offering a visible expression of shared human experience,” trust chairperson Lorraine North said. Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission executive director Justine Gilliland was pleased Seyb and the trust had agreed to help make the hearings venue a more inviting place.

AN outdoor visual exhibition on Worcester Boulevard, which opened recently, looks at the loss of architectural heritage in Christchurch and considers ideas for the city’s future. Reconstruction: conversations on a city, displayed on Worcester Boulevard between Montreal and Durham Streets, is part of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu’s Outer Spaces programme.

Tracking the story of Christchurch/Otautahi from its earliest years, the exhibition examines the city’s foundations, acknowledges loss and demonstrates how different dreams and values have been given form in our built environment. Written contributions from a range of local commentators, many of whom are architectural historians, are displayed alongside the images. The exhibition runs until September 16.

Unbeaten home run continues for Bays Neil Murphy

FERRYMEAD Bays 1st team continued their unbeaten home run with a 3-1 victory over FC Twenty 11 in the English Cup at Barnett Park. Bays dominated proceedings for long periods as FC Twenty 11 tried to frustrate them with defensive tactics. However, once Russell Kamo had opened the scoring just before half time, followed by a Craig Harrison header just after the break, the game was effectively over. On 60 minutes Kamo was fouled in the penalty area and he picked himself up to convert from the spot. FC Twenty 11 did manage a consolation goal at the end through Hem Galel. Bays’ next MPL match is on Friday, July 13 at ASB Park, (formerly English Park), with a 7am kick off, all Bays support is greatly appreciated. In a closely fought top-of-the-table clash between Bays and Nelson the scores finished level at 1-1. Nelson had the best of the opening exchanges and they were one up on 20 minutes with a hotly disputed goal. There appeared to be a handball before Ben Wright found himself free to slot home after the Bays players stopped, awaiting the whistle. Bays then stepped up a gear and laid siege on the Nelson goal, their keeper made two fine stops and Russell Kamo hit the post. The second half saw Bays dominate possession and territory and they were rewarded when Chris Murphy scored a nice goal with a near post shot. But there were no further goals and the points were shared. This leaves both sides on equal points at the

top of the league but with Bays having a game in hand. Bays Div. 2 team had a great away game against the league leaders Western. There was no score at half time with both sides missing chances in an open game. The second half came to life with Western missing an open goal from six yards. Bays went straight up the pitch and scored with an angled shot from 30 yards on 65 minutes. Within five minutes Bays were awarded a penalty for handball inside the penalty box which they duly scored, making it 2 0. On 75 minutes Bays then added to their score to effectively finish the game as a contest. An exciting 20 minutes ended with Bays scoring a fourth goal to kill the game and complete an incredible win against a team who had beaten the Bays team 5-3 earlier in the campaign. This Saturday the Div.2 team has a home game at 2.30pm at Barnett Park against Christchurch Utd. Juniors Most of our junior Ferrymead Bays coaches have now completed their Level 1 certificates through Mainland Football, and hopefully aim to complete their Level 2 modules by the end of the season. This means that we will have a strong, qualified junior and youth coaching contingent, who will carry their best practice on over the next few seasons, as they usually coach their son’s or daughter’s team up through the grades. An exception to this is the youthful captain of our men’s premier team, Chris Murphy, who this year is putting his personal time into coaching the 11th A team, and doing Good, clean fun: Sue Walls (principal) and Lititia McWatt (year six student). a great job.

STAFF and students at Lyttelton Main School pitted their skills against each other in two netball matches last Thursday. Main School staff played Lyttelton Dolphins Netball Team (Lyttelton Main and Lyttelton West schools combined). Main School staff also played years seven and eight Main School students. The scores weren’t kept, but referees said the students won both matches as the staff continually cheated!
