“Sleeping beauty” was how this city of ours was described to me recently by a visitor to Christchurch. At first, probably like you, I wasn’t quite sure how to interpret this observation but when I heard my new friend’s rationale it reminded me of the sentiment that sometimes it takes the eyes of a stranger to again appreciate the beauty and opportunity that can be so close at hand. He said: “I just look around the central city and see life and great people everywhere”. Spring is indeed starting to make itself known around Christchurch with buds bursting in the Gardens, blossoms appearing on kerbside trees and the dawn bird song now starring an expanded chorus. Only a matter of weeks ago the blueprint for our new central city business district was launched with a welcome fanfare and a wave of positive reaction for its foresight and alignment to the “Share an Idea” future city consultation process. We are indeed a city that is on the move with an energy a Westpac report described as a positive picture of a city
bouncing back. This is a rhythm that is in fact easily picked up on around the Cashel Street Mall RE:START Village Precinct, which features a great mix of shopping and dining. Around the city the Gap Filler project has famously stepped out with the Cycle Powered Cinema, Re Entry Youth concert, the Poetica instant poetry project and Smash Palace on Victoria Street which is both an installation and a great bar. Welcome to the Christchurch City Centre, a place of drama, great food, top shopping and the unexpected. I recommend you mark Saturday October 20, place Cranmer Square, for the Great Whitebait festival. And the Sleeping Beauty kiss? I’ll leave that to Lonely Planet, quoted recently as saying, “We’re confident the city is one of New Zealand’s bravest and most resilient communities. Christchurch is re-emerging as one of New Zealand’s most exciting cities.”

First Direct is often acknowledged as one of the stand-out success stories of taxi industry deregulation in New Zealand. Originally operating from the sunroom of a suburban house in Heathcote, Christchurch in 1990, and purchased by the Jackman family in 1992, the company has grown to be one of the largest of Christchurch’s taxi firms. A culture of innovation has been the key to the company’s growth with the introduction of a GPS dispatch system in 2000, hybridpowered vehicles (petrol/electric) in 2007, and carboNZero certification in 2009. CarboNZero certified means that between reduced carbon emissions and the
purchase of carbon off-set credits, we are now carbon neutral. First Direct actively encouraged their members to switch to low-emission vehicles. The hybrid fleet currently makes up a significant total of the car fleet. All our cars, whether hybrid, petrol, diesel or LPG, must meet our strict vehicle policy of a maximum CO2 rating of 200 grams per km (policy excludes vans at this time). Christchurch has faced unprecedented challenges during the last year. But throughout the hard times and into the good times, the green chequers of First Direct have taken Christchurch people to where they need to be. The

large fleet of modern vehicles means that First Direct is always there for the customer. The willingness of First Direct’s people to go the extra mile has earned them unparalleled customer loyalty. from cabinet ministers to wheelchair users, they are the automatic choice for a large proportion of the Christchurch taxi-using public. With over two decades of experience, First Direct is well prepared for the wide range of special requests that customers may have and they are ready to meet such standard special requests such as female driver, mobile EFTPOS, bike racks, small pet transport and even jump starts.
They also provide a wide range of special services including wheelchair accessible taxis for people with impairments (All our wheelchair vehicle drivers are NZQA accredited in transporting wheelchair passengers). They and many other First Direct drivers are also NZQA accredited in transporting people with other impairments and special needs, school transport and travel planning, tours and sightseeing. First Direct is as much a part of Canterbury as Cantabrians themselves and as Christchurch moves forward, so First Direct continues to move its citizens - but in a good way!

Christchurch-owned and operated for over 40 years by the Fitzgibbon family, Carpet Court now has three stores servicing the Canterbury region. We are fully operational and busy completing domestic and commercial work all around Canterbury.” Carpet Court also has an @ Home service a popular option for busy folk. Gateway to the city
Victoria Street will be an important gateway to the central city under the new blueprint, and planning is already underway to make the street a focal point for the central city vision. Wendy Gilchrist from the CERA Community Forum, has been driving the Victoria Streetscape Project since October last year after holding a public meeting at Knox Church with the street’s business, property owners and local residents in response to concerns regarding the possibility of ad hoc redevelopment Since then the Victoria Streetscape Project committee has established “excellent” relationships with other stakeholders, says Wendy, including Christchurch City Council staff and CERA. “Although the Streetscape Project focuses on the street design, it is important to all of us that the area is seen as a whole - hence the branding of the area
Members of the Victoria Streetscape Project in front of the new sign that Plato Design developed. This will soon be going up in the area of the Bealey Ave entrance to Victoria St as one of the initiatives to show that Victoria St is open for business providing a mix of high end retail, professional services, hospitality and entertainment. as Victoria District,” says Wendy. The plan is to have an “aesthetically pleasing, people-friendly environment”, says Wendy and the Victoria Neighbourhood Association want their village back. “Locals want to be able to safely walk from one side of the street to other. They want an attractive environment with build outs for people to sit and linger, lanes and plenty of parking.” Many current businesses have stayed in Victoria Street and, although some have had to leave, new businesses are signing up. “We want to encourage people to join us in this revival of the central city.” With a database of over 100 stakeholders and communication with the local Victoria Neighbourhood Association, the Streetscape committee is making sure everyone is involved in the future of the street.
“We wanted to be inclusive and transparent,” says Wendy. “We feel that Victoria Street is critical to the recovery of the central city as a gateway. Potentially we have the best and most attractive link between the suburbs and the city.” With support from stakeholders Boffa Miskell, the key driver of the CCDU blueprint for the CBD, has been engaged as the Victoria Streetscape Project’s urban designer. “The Christchurch City Council has set aside $50,000 to help us continue the project. “While work continues on the redevelopment of the Victoria Streetscape people need to know also that the Victoria District is still open for business with great shops and cafes so we will be promoting the area during this time,” says Wendy.

House of Travel at 122 Victoria St.HOT Events specialists for the country.
Helena McIntyre (centre), House of Travel Christchurch City’s Head of Special Projects, studies a travel brochure with two of the leisure team, Rachael (left) and Lyn.
Members of the House of Travel Hot Events team.- a close-knit working group.
FUN, passionate & professional
Like many Christchurch businesses, House of Travel Christchurch City, on Victoria Street, has had an eventful 18 months – coming through the earthquakes unshaken and committed to Christchurch and its re-growth. Initially, after the February earthquake, the Victoria Street premise was in the Red Zone; and whilst the cordon lifted quickly, the building needed repair, so it was off to the well known WestMeats Butchery on Carmen Road in Hornby. The team quickly made it their home and it was from that base they delivered a very successful Rugby World Cup, moving 40,000 people, booking 20,000 room nights, and arranging delivery of more than 12,000 tickets.
December, 2011 saw HOT Christchurch City move back to Victoria Street, and after a refit and expansion of the premises, they are ready to receive and thrill their customers again. The team really does embody the company motto of “Powered by People”. Managing Director of House of Travel Christchurch City, David Williams, has worked for over 20 years in the travel industry from selling packages to Fiji to becoming the founder of HOT Events. “I am delighted to have such a fun, passionate and professional team working alongside me in Victoria Street and further afield. We have developed from a small travel agency to a team of 30 plus. The commitment they show
their clients and colleagues ensures we can deliver all that we promise.” Their staff are very much enjoying being back and enjoying the new look to the offices. The Leisure team, who sit out front, are the “friendly faces you’ll see when you first come in”, says Helena McIntyre Head of Special Projects. They can recommend a cruise, customise that trip of a lifetime, or even help you arrange your islandparadise wedding. They have a wealth of experience and knowledge which helps ensure their clients avoid the pitfalls inherent with booking on line. Behind the scenes they have a dedicated corporate team – who ensure all those businesses get the
best travel options domestically and internationally. Making up the balance of the team out the back of the premises is the HOT Events Management staff – who specialise in organising conferences, incentive travel, functions and meetings anywhere in the world. HOT Events, with offices in Christchurch, Queensland and Sydney, managed an array of events, and prides itself on being New Zealand and Australia’s most comprehensive conference and incentive event management company. Come check out the new look to the House of Travel on Victoria Street. See us about a trip, cruise, adventure, wedding or event.

High quality spa pools at their best... After a decade of operating from its Ferrymead premises, it was a tough and scary decision for Spa One to relocate in June 2011. Once relocated in their new central city showroom in Conference St, owners Steve and Rachael Williams quickly found they needn’t have been so concerned. “Once we had feedback from customers both new and old we realized it wasn’t our location that was important but the philosophy and service we offer. We are hugely appreciative of our customers who have been so positive and supportive of our move,” says Rachael. “The only significant change is that our pool production is no longer on the same site as our showroom, otherwise Spa One spa pools are still the same top quality, fully foamed stylish pools that they have always been.” With 2011 being a tough year for selling luxury products Spa One like many were tempted to diversify to add potential income. After some consideration Steve and Rachael decided to stick with what they know
best, building great value spas and continuing to support their growing customer base. They are delighted they did this, as they are now enjoying a great 2012 with Cantabrians getting back to normal and treating themselves to a well-deserved luxury - nothing quite beats coming home at the end of a day to catch up with family in a warm and relaxing spa. With a growing number of agents around the south island Rachael says Spa One has never been busier with more and more people seeing the sense in our “keep it simple” philosophy. “We don’t do the bells and whistles. Instead we concentrate on doing the simple things well, using the best running gear, full foaming for insulation and providing great service.” Anyone interested in having a spa pool should visit Rachael in the Spa One showroom at 21a Conference St, Central City. “Oh and the other change since relocating is Sunday is now our family day,” says Rachael.

The temporary Christchurch South library has moved out. “They’ve been good for us. Matt - Liquor Manager South City is having a refurbishment and, with that, goes a new-look New World supermarket that is easy to get around and filled with a wonderful range of products. The friendly staff and excellent customer service are still there but there will be a new floor, ceiling, lighting and colour scheme, refrigeration, seismic safe shelving - and 16 check-outs, including three additional self-service units, making your trip to get groceries even quicker. New World South City reopened two weeks after the February earthquake and helped out the customers from the Redcliffs and St Martins New World supermarkets by running a bus daily five times a week for them to shop at South City.

The South City New World has been there for12 years, and despite the upheavals of the earthquake, has seen the business grow over the past few years, says owner-operator Nigel Bond.
“We get back to them and really do listen to their needs,” says Nigel. That customer service extended to looking after anyone who was in-store during the various aftershocks.
One reason could be their butcher’s exclusive and award-winning Snagalicious sausages – the chicken and rocket, venison and merlot, smokin’ hot lamb and chicken and crispy bacon flavours have all received national awards.
“One customer said they couldn’t believe how well they had been looked after by the staff.” Others said they felt that when the supermarket re-opened so quickly after the February earthquakes that they were in an “island of normality”.
Nigel and the team at South City New World don’t just say they provide excellent customer service. They mean it. A feedback board is available in-store with pre-printed forms where customers can leave a phone number if they want to be contacted.
Large gluten-free and international sections are a feature of South City New World, they also make their own sushi and fish and chips in-store. A new permanent tasting station is soon to be installed so customers can try before they buy.
The store itself has also won a range of awards over the years including Top Shop and Fair Trade’s Fairest Supermarket which Nigel says is a strong focus of his supermarket. There is plenty of parking outside and inside there is the new look South City mall and New World supermarket to attract customers from all over the city.

Manchester Street is open from St Asaph Street south to Moorhouse Avenue and some of the pre-earthquake shops and stores are still operating, alongside the car yards and the haven for Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts. You can now visit the video wonderland by turning right into Tuam Street from the end of Manchester Street. A feast for the eyes and taste buds Mercato, in Fitzgerald Avenue, can only be described as an oasis for food lovers with the wonderful range of Italian, French and Spanish ingredients along with top quality products from New Zealand artisan producers. Owners Ngaire and Marty Baker are passionate about food. With the Mercato team, they taste product before it hits the shelves, to make sure they reach their high standards. “Investing in top quality ingredients means that you don’t need to add anything else to make your dish taste great,” says Ngaire. The balsamic vinegars, for example, have been created by Italy’s Giusti family for 400 years. Pre-mix kits are also popular whether it is risotto, a curry or Moroccan couscous in a variety of flavours. “These kits create a delicious meal and take the fear factor out of trying something new.” Peter Gordon’s and Julie Le Clerc’s sauces and dressing are in-store along with freezedried fruit sachets from New Zealand company Fresh As. Choose mandarins or lychees to give that added flavour that is more intense than frozen fruit.
From New Zealand there are jams, preserves (cherry, red currant and damson are always popular), apple syrups from Tauranga, preserved lemons from Kaikohe and Heilala vanilla beans, paste, syrup and extracts from a Tauranga company. Mercato has a delicatessen instore with sturgeon caviar along with salami, Prosciutto di Parma or fig and almond cake. Boquerone, or white anchovies, add a delicious flavour to salads. The range of cheese imported from Europe evoke memories of that overseas trip. Mercato also stocks the first gluten-free baguette from Lievito. A range of the world’s best seasoning is also at Mercato – salt. “Not all salts are created equal,” says Ngaire. Allpress coffee is available and is served in the café, where all the delicious soups, salads, pizzas and risottos are made from ingredients customers can purchase in-store. The secret to finding out more about what’s in-store at Mercato is to have a browse. It will make your mouth-water. They are at 100 Fitzgerald Avenue between Lichfield and Cashel Street – look out for the orange awnings.

Don’t let your injuries slow you down Visit Muscle People Physiotherapy and let their team of trained physiotherapists assess your movement and posture, using technology that is a first for New Zealand. Do you want to improve your performance, address back pain and nagging injuries? What was once the exclusive domain of elite professional sports teams overseas is now available at Muscle People next to the YMCA in Hereford Street. Muscle People are aligned with several international organisations to deliver world class services for muscle, joint, nerve and pain conditions to the people of Canterbury. The Movement and Posture Assessment will identify why you suffer from recurring injuries, address your current condition, improve your physical performance and reduce the risk of future injuries. The assessment technology has been popular over the years for top athletes, including North American professional sports teams in the National Hockey League, NFL, NBA and college sports teams. It identifies key movement faults which create injuries, and is also used to improve performance through corrective exercise programmes. “By screening key functional movement
patterns, the Movement and Posture Assessment readily identifies any weaknesses, immobility, lack of stability and imbalances which may affect your performance,” says Laurie Moore, Managing Director from Muscle People. “This assessment is for everyone who wants to improve their performance, whether they are an athlete, an office worker or a person with recurrent back pain who want to identify causative factors of their pain and then address them.” Muscle People design an individualised programme based on the findings in a comprehensive report. “We offer treatments and exercise programmes to correct these factors. Our aim is to have our clients not just back to their pre-injury state, but to improve their overall condition and help them achieve their desired performance level,” says Laurie.

Located opposite the art gallery, we are a stone’s throw from the city council buildings, HSBC Club tower and a short walk from the central hospital buildings, and Cashell St Re:start mall. Moriarty Dental provides a wide range of general dental procedures including restorative, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, and tooth whitening services. A lot of people do not like going to the dentist, and often worry about how much treatment they will need. Treatment options can vary from simple cleaning and fillings, to more complex use of partial dentures and titanium implants to replace teeth or stabilise loose dentures. Tom Moriarty the principal dentist, a 2003 Otago Graduate, believes
that individual people require individual treatment plans to ensure we can meet your needs and dental goals. The clinical treatment rooms are located on the ground floor of a three story building shared with architects and structural engineers. We have large floor to ceiling windows opening to a garden area, to allow for natural lighting to help create a relaxed, safe environment. Off street car parking is available for the duration of your appointment at no charge, and is accessible from Montreal street through the Cowlishaw Mews archway. We are enrolled for providing treatment of adolescents, and are located down the road from Christ’s College. We usually arrange yearly appointments for high school patients after school hours to fit in with extracurricular activities.

Bringing life SAVE our back to the city heritage
Having relocated from High Street last October to the beautiful new space in the heritage NG building has allowed Director Caroline Billing to curate exhibitions of sculptural works by New Zealand artists, alongside its represented artists. Caroline was passionate about moving back to the area, to bring life back to the city in an area known for its creative and more alternative spaces. The gallery has a dedicated exhibition space and exhibitions of new work are held monthly. The National also specialises in contemporary jewellery. Caroline represents around 20 different artists, showing work by emerging and established makers, and some international. From beautiful elegant pieces to more challenging and sculptural and collectible artworks, The National is a must see! www.thenational.co.nz
Please help save our heritage building at 212 Madras Street. Under the new city plan the land will be taken for the proposed stadium. While we want very much for the heart of our city to be re-establised it should not be at the cost of what little remains of our history. We re-opened in September 2011 - one of the first buildings in the inner city to do so. Currently we have ten businesses, including two gallery spaces, architects, designers, a safety consultant and our business, Ng Boutique. To help support our cause, please come and patronize our businesses or visit our our Facebook page via our website and join our group “Save NG Building- 212 Madras Street. www.ngspace.co.nz

in the city with Antarctic superstars Whether its meeting an Antarctic superstar, or taking the Virtual Antarctica real-time tour, NZ IceFest will bring exciting new ways of understanding science and Antarctica to the central city. Hagley Park Events Village will be transformed into Hagley Park Ice Station when NZ IceFest opens September 14 until October 14. NZ IceFest Director Jo Blair says stunning visuals, cool venues and guests who are recognised as Antarctic superstars will bring new ways of getting to the “nitty gritty of Antarctic science”. New emerging technology from the University of Canterbury’s Human Interface Technology Laboratory New Zealand, will help bring Antarctica to Christchurch - dropping visitors into the world’s most extreme environment using tablet PCs . Visitors taking the virtual tour can
retrace the footsteps of polar explorers and ‘explore’ Ross Island. Antarctic Yarns will provide an insight into the human experiences of oldschool and fresh-faced Antarcticans, Scott Base antics, wild adventures, and studying in Antarctica. UC Science Café takes learning outside of the traditional academic zone into a social setting, where candid chat about topics ranging from the psychology of visiting Antarctica to the reality of climate change research are enjoyed along with a coffee or glass of wine. The UC Science café is the southernmost version of global phenomenon Café Scientifique. Three Big Issues debates will tackle relevant and critical issues related to science and society, including what climate change really means, why people should care about the Southern Ocean and what makes science good for the economy.

More than e r e h t y a w half-
Fitzgerald Avenue begins to bloom again One of the most filmed sites after February 22 earthquake was Fitzgerald Avenue, where it crosses the Avon, on the edge of the central city. Hummocks appeared in the tar seal and deep cracks opened up leading onto and off the bridge, to the delight of skateboarders. It was not so great for drivers, with traffic diverted to the lesser-damaged side while the town-side was fenced off and investigations started on the rebuild. Also partly forgotten on the town-side of the road was the old walkway/cycleway, lower than the bridge, hugging its side all the way around, bordered by the riverbank flaxes. In the aftermath of the earthquake it looked as if the river was going to swallow it up completely. But after more than a year of work by Downer, part of SCIRT (Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team), this historic area has reached a significant milestone. There are now 800 stone columns stabilising the ground under the road and bridge, the retaining wall on the town-side is rebuilt, and the wastewater pipe shifted to the city-side of the road. At the end of August, the new walkway for pedestrians and cyclists will be open.

For traffic, things will improve also as the rebuilt half of the roadway will be opened while the remaining damaged side is rebuilt. As the wastewater pipe is already in place, this will be a less extensive work programme than has occurred to date. For people who enjoy walking or cycling, the new walkway/cycleway, at the same level as the rebuilt roadway, is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. Work to rebuild the road on the east-side continues from September this year. The SCIRT website will keep you up to date – www. strongerchristchurch.govt.nz then type in Fitzgerald Avenue (or any other street you are interested in) in the search box. Friendly welcome at inner city dentist The Smile Company, with its handy location in Cambridge Terrace near the Bridge of Remembrance, is the perfect place to go for your dental care. As a well-established business of 34 years, The Smile Company team pride themselves on their friendly welcoming service and aim to give you the best smile in Christchurch. “Our rooms and staff help provide a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere,” says dentist David Blair. “Our clients tell us they love our staff, our environment and our service.” New clients are welcome which is particularly important as many city-based dentists are no longer operating. What’s more their Cambridge Terrace building is safe and has survived all the major earthquakes. The Smile Company is known for its ongoing relationships with clients and an important part of that role is preventing tooth decay, says David. A dental hygienist is available to educate clients about how to keep their teeth – and gums – healthy. alternative to dentures, along with crowns, veneers and composite fillings – and they do not use any mercury. A visit to the dentist these days is a lot less painful and disturbing than it used to be, says David. “Modern technology has meant that the services we provide are a lot less daunting.” The Smile Company is now providing increasing focus on emergency dental treatments for the new people to Christchurch and Canterbury. Digital X-ray technology means The Smile Company has an immediate picture of what is happening and this helps with immediate treatment and pain relief. Located at 75 Cambridge Terrace, there is plenty of parking, both on-site and alongside the river, so if you need a central city dental practice that is established and reputable – and well-known for their friendly and welcoming service - phone the Smile Company on 366 1948 to make an appointment. St Michael’s Church School St Michael’s Church and School are a Christian community providing quality education and empowering young learners to be compassionate, responsible, resourceful citizens. Located in the heart of the city and established in 1851, it is now the oldest school in Christchurch having been in operation for 161 years. With no school zoning, the school day starting at 8:35am and onsite after school care daily until 5.30pm, St Michael’s fits in fantastically with
parents’ work commitments. The School’s reasonable fees are a further attraction to prospective parents, who bring to the school a richness in culture and background. St Michael’s, a decile nine rated school, are proud of their 1:15 teacher/student ratio. The school pursues its daily organisation, closely aligned to the four dimensional development of the pupils in its care: academic, cultural, sport and spiritual.
To attend an Open Day... Contact the school on 379 9790, or office@saintmichaels.co.nz More details can be found at www.saintmichaelsschool.co.nz and https://www.facebook.com/SaintMichaelsSchool ACADEMIC A strong emphasis is placed on each pupil’s academic development – prioritising of each pupil’s development in literacy and numeracy. All pupils study Te Reo Maori, with French and Spanish offered for students Years 7-8. CULTURAL Culturally, the school’s aim is to develop a pupil’s ability to speak, sing, play and act in front of an audience. All pupils can participate in four choirs, Kapahaka, the orchestra and biennial concerts/productions.Our latest production, “Broadway Kids” can be viewed on the school’s website.
SPORT Emphasis is on personal fitness and the acquiring of a range of sporting skills, including involvement in annual athletics, cross-country and swimming competitions. SPIRITUAL A Christian ethos permeates all that we do. Christian values and virtues are promoted and taught in classroom programmes and assemblies and masses, along with the opportunity for pupils to be baptised and/or welcomed to Holy Communion. Three compulsory services are conducted each year: Mothering Sunday Service, Founders’ Service and Carol Service.
Leadership opportunities for students Years 7-8 Every child in the Senior School has a responsibility or leadership role. Year 7 pupils are playground, class and Wet Day monitors. The Year 8 class are chosen Prefects, House Leaders, Sports Captains, Head Choristers, Orchestra Leader, Librarians, Altar Servers, and Assembly Monitors. With successful scholarships to St Margaret’s and Christ’s College, and a history of Canterbury hockey and netball representatives, St Michael’s really is the little school of big winners!

Chris says... “I have just enjoyed a stunning week in Annecy and Chamonix. Lake Annecy is gorgeous and I cycled, walked and swam here. In Chamonix a visit to the top of the Aiguille du Midi – 3842 metres in a cable car, was truly breathtaking. I followed this with a gentle mountain walk to the Mer de Glace – a stunning walk with alpine flowers and magnificent mountain views!”
